German Shepherd Dog Training

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular of the  dog breeds. They are loyal, protective, strong,  intelligent and can be readily trained. They make excellent guard dogs and are trained and used for police and military work.

In training your German Shepherd, the first thing you  must realize is that dogs are pack animals with strong  pack instincts.  You will need to establish yourself as  the pack leader that your dog will respect and love.

When he realizes that you are the leader who takes care  feeding, watering, exercising and protecting him, he  will become calm and submissive.

This comes before Obedience training. Your dog is always  watching and is more intuitive than you are. Be firm and consistent in your training methods. He can be taught to understand that he will be rewarded for obedience.

He  will have to be taught to ride quietly in the car. He will require housebreaking and crate training.

There are often problems with aggressive behavior, dominance, food aggressiveness, etc. which will have to be dealt with. These traits are exhibited by dogs wanting to establish for themselves a higher rank in the pack.  This should never be allowed to continue.  Some of the things that reinforce this aggression are:  Allowing the dog to sleep on your bed or on the furniture,  Allowing dog to precede you in entering room or going up or down steps.  He must know that you are the leader and what you allow  is the only things he is permitted to do.
