german shepherd litters
I have a german shepherd pup that came from a pedigree father?

can I register him with that alone with the AKC ? or did they owner have to register the litter ?

Yes and no.
It depends on what KIND of registration you want.

(1) Full registration is required for entry into conformation shows and for having litters registered. I do not approve of the AKC’s way of doing it (in my country, only the breeder can do this type of registration for a pup), which is that the breeder must “notify” the litter to the AKC but then has the option of allowing each buyer to fill in the individual registration form. As a result, it is almost impossible to tell which pooches are litter mates and who bred what, when you look at show or trial results. The quality breeders will register each pup BEFORE sale, to ensure that they all have the breeder’s kennel name and siblings have the same litter-code (which is usually a letter of the alphabet but can be a theme such as “aeroplane types”).
So if full registration is what you wanted, you are out of luck – if the dam doesn’t have full registration then no-one can register her pups for show & breeding purposes.
(2) About 18 months ago the AKC joined the rest of the world in allowing pooches of even totally unknown ancestry to be given “obedience only” registration. That allows the pooch to compete in agility, companion-utility trials, fly ball, obedience tests, Rally-O, tracking trials. It can become an Agility Champion and/or an Obedience Champion. Look in http://www.akc.org/ if that’s what you want to investigate

Registration is NOT necessary in order to join a training club class when your pup is 18-22 weeks old, which is when you SHOULD join a training club so that the instructor can coach YOUR techniques before you make too many mistakes – and at the same time your pet learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.

What a Dog can Do!

“Momma? Momma? Where’s my notebook?”  yelled Elijah. “The news station called to say your interview has been changed to 11:00!”

“Momma! I can’t find my school shoes!” exclaimed Isaiah. “Oh, and your other wheelchair battery is finished re-charging.”

“Mom! My report got moved off the desk… do you know where it is?”  hollered Isabelle.  “I’ve already fed the 5 new dogs but haven’t fed any of the puppies yet.”

“Mama! I’m hungry… Can I make the pancakes?”  giggled Aaron. “Isabelle, your report is under the new donation checks.”

Wow! What a busy household! Does it sound like yours?  It sounds like mine only a bit more chaotic… news interviews, wheelchairs, dogs and donations… PLUS 4 kids. Who is this woman I am writing about today?

Karen gives Ben, a black German Shepherd assistance dog, the credit, praise and honor of not only being her inspiration to start the non-profit organization, but also for saving her life.

As an energetic young college woman, Karen was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease called “Myasthenia gravis” which literally means “serious muscle-weakness.”  With varying degrees of severe fatigue and chronic muscle weakness, Karen’s physical condition had deteriorated so much that she became dependent on a respirator to breathe, unable to walk or even sit up straight, depressed, discouraged and suicidal. She even had a secret stash of morphine she could have used to end it all… but. . .

(you knew there was a “but” coming, didn’t you!)

but. . .  one of her friends… believed so much that Karen deserved a happy full life… even with Myasthenia Gravis, she began literally dragging her and her wheelchair to animal shelters forcing Karen to look for a possible service dog. They found Ben… a black shadow of love that needed Karen as much as she needed him. Ben grew from a pup into a loving assistant for Karen. Ben was trained to bring mail and beverages, answer the phone on command, and to generally watch over her.

One day due to medication complications, Karen was in serious need of medical attention and unresponsive. When the phone rang, Ben answered the phone without being given his command and brought the phone over to where she lay breathing but unable to speak… after staying quiet for a few moments to allow Karen to speak (of course she couldn’t) Ben began barking into the phone and then getting quiet so the caller understood something was wrong.

The caller (who happened to be Karen’s father) hung up and called 911. The ambulance responders found Ben still by Karen barking into the phone. They all credit Ben for saving her life.

From that experience, Karen realized she had the ability to influence and affect other lives. Thus, together with Ben, she cofounded Paws 4 Ability, an organization that matches and trains service, assistance, and companion dogs with needy children and adults. Paws 4 Ability’s mission?  “…to enrich the lives of people with disabilities by training and placing service animals to provide them with companionship and promote independent living… specializing in placements with people who are turned away by many other agencies.”

From a despondent, diseased woman Karen is now a vibrant, business professional with 4 growing children… all stemming from a friend’s loving belief in Karen’s life.

“Mom, the school bus is here! Love you… see you later!” rang out 4 voices in unison.

Karen smiles, feels their love and finishes her morning routine. In her busy but organized mind she runs through the day. . . “get ready for the interview, deposit the new donations and call about that new litter of puppies I just heard about…”

So, what are you doing today with the rest of your life? I encourage you to be like Karen and let the belief that someone believes in you be a changing point.

Let that belief turn you around from a life of despair to a life of hope, love and generosity.

Clipping German Shepherd Nails

Dog That Clips Her Own Toenails?

I have a 2 year old german shepherd/husky mix that has been chewing her own toenails off since she was 5 months old. She doesn’t chew them completely off but to the extent you would if you would clip them and you can point out a long nail to her and she’ll chew it off..

Is this normal for dogs or is she just wierd?
Theres no possible way that she isn’t getting enough excercise.. we live on a 20 acre farm and she runs from day light to dusk every day.

I believe it is normal. I have a pitbull and she gets plenty of exercise and does the same thing. I talked to the vet about it and was told that she needed to do walking on the cement sidewalk where her nails get a weardown from walking or running. (She gets her exercise in our huge back yard which is fenced in so she is only on grassy areas).

Evaluating Dog Breeders

Before you can determine whether or not a particular dog will be of value to you there are two basic items that must be addressed. One, you must know the breed of dog you want. Are you after a German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain dog, Newfoundland, Yorkshire Terrier or other type? If it’s a German Shepherd that you want you should be looking for german shepherd dog breeders. And two, you must be aware of some specific information about that breed. The information you need to be versed on includes the correct size for your dog breed, how often it needs to be brushed, how much activity or exercise it needs daily, if there are genetic diseases that are common with this type, have there been tests performed that have ruled these diseases out in this pup, and what else is required in maintaining it’s health such as clipping its nails.

There is a lot of additional information that is important for you to know as well. Some dog breeders don’t actually do the breeding themselves, but buy their animals from other areas. You should stick with a breeder that breeds and raises the pups on site. The reason for this is because you can better determine if this puppy was raised in a clean environment. Without examining its place of birth you have no idea what sort of environment it was raised in. Puppies can end up with mental or physical deficiencies if brought up in a cruel or unkempt environment.

Another item for concern is the age of the puppies that you are interested in. The puppies should be at least seven weeks old before they are placed. Their parents should be at least two years old before breeding and should have been tested for any possible genetic diseases.

When purchasing puppies it’s important that the pups have had some interaction with other animals and children. This is to help ensure that the dogs will be friendly and sociable. It’s also a good idea to get your puppy from a dog breeder that will allow you to call him later with any questions or concerns you may have about your animal.

There is a lot to know about breeding dogs and it’s very hard to find a competent experienced dog breeder who raises more than 4 or 5 different breeds. If he raises 6 or 8 or more it’s probably a good idea to look else ware for you puppy. Also, most experienced breeders belong to one or more breed clubs so ask them if that’s true with them.

As you are concerned about the specific breeder he should also show some concern with you as well. If he asks you questions about they type of environment that you will raising the pup, your family, and your experience with animals it’s usually a good sign that the animal has been raised with love. The breeder should have concern for the placement of his puppies.

Once you have made a decision to buy a specific dog there are few other items that should be addressed. A suggested diet should be provided for your animal. You should receive a registration certificate with your purchase. You should also require the seller to give you a 3-generation pedigree chart for the dog, a health record of the animal that includes dates the puppy was inoculated or received other veterinary care. Another important item is a health guarantee and you should require one. If it’s later discovered that the dog suffers from a genetic disease, for example, you should have some recourse. Along these same lines you should have in writing that you are allowed, within a reasonable amount of time, to have the puppy examined by a veterinarian at your own expense. And if it is found that the dog you have purchased has any defects, as determined by the veterinarian, you can return it for a full refund.

Finding the perfect dog can be a long and tedious process, but with a little preparation, education and effort it’s possible to obtain a quality animal that you will be proud to own.

puppy wanted?

ok me and my g-pa are looking for a female german shepherd puppy. we have researched it and we have 1 acer. can anybody tell me what else i need for her and where can we find those puppies that arnt fixed so we can put them into shows. we have a full blooded queensland heeler puppy and she needs a friend.!!!!!

Usually if you buy from a reputable breeder they will ask that you don’t put them in show, mainly because then there loosing money, try looking on the akc website, it shows a list of breeders that are well known and are trusted. But in saying that sometimes you can get a dud dog, my family has owned 2 german shepherds, one the female we had first was amazing, she didnt have papers but you could tell she was a pure bred, she was the smartest thing ever, then we got a male from a breeder and he was actually the stupidest dog we ever had lol, champion blood lines from germany, father was a police dog and yet the one we had was so stupid, he couldnt be trained but we loved him none the less lol, so just make sure you research your breeders, just type in akc on google.

MY dog is covered in thistle like grass, known in Montana as “needle and thread”…..?

He’s a long hair german shepherd, and pulling them out is tedious and time consuming. But I’ve been working on it. Does anyone know what the worst side effects of this burrowing grass is? A few have completely lodged in the skin and are pussing up. More info appreciated, though he should be sticker free today (finally!)

Fox tails burrow into feet and will cause problems if you don’t clean your dog, get a sheep card and use that and get it clean or you could restrain your dog to an area where weeds are not rampant. You might consider shaving him for the summer and applying bag balm to the bad spots, if you do shave him keep him out of the hot sun during the day.

German Shepherds and Pope Benedict XVI: What’s the connection?

I was driving down the freeway today and the car in front of me had two bumper stickers, one on top of the other. The top one said “I love my German Shepherd!” and the bottom one said “Pope Benedict XVI”

The car was in front of me for a couple minutes in the freeway traffic and got off at my offramp. I thought that the bumper sticker combination was interesting. I ran my errands and, 20 minutes later, was returning to my office when the same car moved ahead of me into my lane, got onto the freeway and got off at the same offramp.

Coincidence? I THINK NOT!! So does it all mean? German Shepherds? The Pope? Is he leading the sheep? Is this a message from up on high?

(signed) Grasshoppah

Simple answer: Roman Catholics consider the Pope “their Shepherd” (i.e. leader of the flock of faithful believers). As Pope Benedict XVI is German, that makes him “The German Shepherd”.

german shepherd sketches
What should I draw for my dad?

What would a military-type man like? He’s not real interested in puppies/kitties/butterflies/flowers stuff like that. I draw wolves and Predator-style creatures really well…. here’s a list of some of the stuff I’m good at sketching and am considering:

Shark (full-body)
Wolf (full-body)
Lion (full-body)
German Shepherd (his favorite dog breed besides the Belgian Malinois)
Alligator or Croc (head)

I’m unsure about the GS because his childhood dog was a German Shep female and his mother euthanized her without letting him have any say in it, and took away his puppy as well.

Maybe writing something for him? Some paragraphs about encouragement, or how much he means to me? He’s been having it tough lately with my mother, my siblings, housing, work, and his heart and back.

I bet you he’d like anything you want to draw for him (including the German Shepherd – I’d love a picture of my childhood dog, even though it’s sad that he died). I would definitely write as well. It will be something he can treasure.

Getting a New Puppy? Consider the Super Intelligent German Shepherd

If you are considering getting a new puppy or a dog, especially one of the larger dog breeds, you may want to consider getting a German Shepherd. They are one of the most popular breeds in the world, beautiful, highly intelligent, and easy to train. They are best known to many as working dogs, working with the police department, military, and as service dogs to the blind.

The average life span of a German Shepherd is about twelve years, with middle age around seven or eight years old. Generally, a puppy will be close to its adult height around ten to eighteen months of age, but it can take up to three years for a male, or two for a female, to be completely mature.

Once you have decided specifically what type of dog (such as age, sex, etc.) you are looking for and have prepared your home for the arrival of your new companion, now its time to start your search. There are many places you can find your German Shepherd puppy or dog but probably the best place to start your search is through rescue organizations.

There are a wide variety of sources on the internet and in your local area that rescue German Shepherds from numerous situations and they are always seeking to place these dogs in good homes. Even if the type of dog you are seeking is not immediately available, dogs become available everyday so just give it a little time before you move on to the next option.

You can also use the internet to seek out local breeders in your area. When purchasing from a breeder, be sure to observe the conditions of the kennel and the temperament of the dog. The average litter of German Shepherds is eight puppies, so you should have several to select from if a litter is close to the age of being able to be sold.

Wherever you find the German Shepherd you are seeking, be sure to spend some time with your dog before you bring him/her home, you need to be sure that the temperament of your dog will fit well with your own particular living situation. Good luck with your new companion and friend!

Either my mother in law or step mother – law are going to watch him. They are both mid 40s, live in the country in N. Kentucky, they are more of the farm type of women than the makeup and heels kind of women, any good gift ideas?

movie gift certificates and their favorite returant gift cards are good.

Gifts For Small Dog Owners

The latest accessory for Hollywood celebrities is undoubtedly the tiny canine. And since Hollywood sets most fashion trends, the rest of the world has not been far behind in adding “purse pooch” to their accessories collection. Little dog owners have diverse needs than persons who own, say a German shepherd or a Pit Bull. The following websites have great present ideas for those whose pets are usually riding along, regardless of whether it is in a purse or on a lap.

Smaller dogs will need clothes, and not just for setting trends; their small bodies get cold! Pampermepuppy.com has a few fashionable clothing possibilities in each and every price range for your tiny pup. The Camo Sleeveless Monster Canine Hoodie is usually a sporty selection and comes in pink or in conventional camouflage for $41.95. The Moire Dog Coat is just a little classier and just a little pricier at $119.95. To the coolest of little dogs, they offer the Crash Bomber Dog Jacket for $127.95.

Tiny canine owners love that their pups can ride around in an over the shoulder puppy holder. Tailsinthecity.com carries a huge selection of Designer Dog Carriers for just this purpose. You can find literally pages and pages of stylish canine carriers to pick from on this web site. Prices range from $99 (for your Roxy II carrier in Pink and Black, Red and Black, Tan and Black, or Turquoise and Black) towards the moderately priced Petote Kelle Bag in Chocolate, Olive, or Tan and Black ($150) the many way up to $1200 with the quite chic Hedy Manon Black Madison Bag.

Quite a few small canine owners take into account their tiny sidekicks their tiny babies. For these folk, there is the choice to push the pup inside a stroller. Drsfostersmith.com sells a Dura-Ruff Ultralite Dog Stroller for $99.99. Even though it might not be as elegant as some other dog carrier options, it is offered in two colors (Sage and Bittersweet) and it conveniently folds flat into the height of 8″. If the dog is less than 20 pounds than this carrier may be the ideal option. It even carries a pad that could be removed and washed in case the itty bitty pup has an itty bitty accident.

Little dogs don’t like to leave their house without their bling. At trendpuppy.com you are able to find a personalized canine collar with bling to present into the tiny dog owner. Have the dog’s name written in bling for $16.99 or select the Big Bling Dog Collar for $26.99 for an even larger name with even larger bling. For those of you who aren’t looking to spend too significantly dollars, there’s the Budget Bling collar for $9.99 with consists of a silver crystal bling buckle.

Doglovergiftbaskets.com has some incredibly cute and creative present basket items for modest dogs and their owners. The Modest Canine Toys and Treats Present Basket is $46.95 and is packed full of goodies. It includes 5 little bags of gourmet treats from Barking Baby (made with pure all natural human grade ingredients) too as a tiny squeaky toy and 3 small rawhide bones. Also, the Wee Paws Bark-a-Rita Dog Bowl Present Set is available for $18.50. This present set consists of a 10 oz. hand painted ceramic bowl that resembles a margarita glass and can be applied for the dog’s beverage. It also comes with a plush squeaker toy shaped like a lime and a matching cocktail napkin that doubles as the placemat for the bowl. With this clever present basket you also have the alternative of adding a plush toy that resembles the margarita glass for just $8.99.

And finally, the site that modest dog owners don’t like to admit they will need:

Smalldogbarkcollar.com. Tiny dogs are notorious for their barking, and when left home alone commonly create so a lot noise that the neighbors contemplate putting a For Sale sign within the yard. This website has done all the work for you; it compares prices, stores, features, etc. of all the greatest barking collars. It’s time to obtain on-line and get shopping for a bark collar for the special small dog (owner) in your life!

Working dog, GSD breeders in Illinois?

I’m trying to find good working dog breeders of German Shepherds in Illinois? Or any other Chicago area kennels that have working dogs, like Schutzhund or protection. I’m not sure what breed I want- my main focus is protection training, PSA & Schutzhund. Any kennels?

Here are a few breeders:

http://www.mybodyguarddogs.com/

http://www.mittelwest.com/

http://www.shootingstarshepherds.com/

And here is a link for the club that was mentioned by another post, there are some breeders involved in the club but you would have to go there and speak to some of the members:

http://www.gsdca.org/

You could also contact this Schutzhund club because they have some members that are breeders:

Can anyone recommend a German shepherd breeder?

I live in Southern Wisconsin, right near the border of Illinois. I heard of one in Harvard, but I would like have more options and look around. Thanks!
Just looking for a healthy happy puppy. We will not be showing her or using her for any purpose besides companionship.
anne-is that shewana shepherds you are referring to in Harvard?

http://www.gsdca.org/gsdca_joomla/index.php/breederclassified/great-lakes

Three breeders who are members of the national breed club, all in your area.
Whatever you do, please do NOT buy your GSD from any of the local breeders close to the Wisconsin border. Poor temperaments and very little testing. I believe there is one in Harvard and one in Johnsburg(?).

ETA: Correction-The guy in Harvard breeds working dogs, but posts no pedigrees or his health guarantee on his web page. He does say on the website that he is member of the breed club.
I have only ever seen one of his dogs, in to get a bath the day before a show. He told me the dog was taken back from an owner who was chaining him in the backyard. The dog was I believe 6 years old.

ETA: This is the man I was talking about:

http://www.vomdreieck.com/

Don’t really know too much about him, but am told his dogs are wonderful.

Shewana is the other one. They don’t do anything with their dogs besides breed. They don’t show, they don’t compete in anything, they don’t work them, they just breed them.Have litters on the ground all the time. Don’t outsource their stud dogs.

German Shepherd Black Lab Mix

How bad is shock collar training?

I am thinking about getting an electric collar for my 2 year old german shepherd/black lab mix. She has gotten better in one person meetings since I have my friends meet us outside the house first and then go into the house together. But when I bring her to my family’s house, she seems weird when people move too quick and has grabbed at sleeves of shirts. I am so scared it may turn into biting. I just want my dog to be social. I was looking at the PetSafe models.

I would NEVER use one. They are cruel & i feel they should only be used in extrema situations where everything else has failed! Ex., the dog is extremely aggressive, everything else has been tried & the dog is looking as being put down. Get the dog some training instead. Cost about the same & is far more kinder.

A Purebred Puppy Or a Mixed Breed Puppy?

Which is better, to choose between a pure bred puppy and a mixed breed puppy. Which is the best choice? There are lot of factors in this decision.

A pure bred puppy will cost more. A mixed breed puppy is often free or cheaper in cost then a pure bred. A pure bred puppy will often have a higher level of care associated with it. Unless purchased from a puppy mill, pure bred dogs are often pampered, wormed and have their early shots. Pure bred puppies may have congenital problems associated with inbreeding unless care was taken in the breeding. Buying a purebred with accredited credentials from the American Kennel Club or other such breed clubs helps keep track of several generations of parents. The American Kennel Club offers pure bred dog registrations for both puppies that you eventually want to breed and puppies that are not to be used for breeding. Generally, the breeder you purchase your puppy from will charge more for a puppy if you want to eventually breed and have the puppies registered. This makes the breeder more money and helps keep out competition for that breed of registered puppies in the future.

I have personal experience in both pure bred and mixed breed dogs. I have had 4 different mixed breed dogs and all were lovable, healthy and great pets. One of my dogs, Shadow, I have had for 14 years. She is a mix between a Rottweiler (her mother) and a Golden Retriever. She looks like a wide black lab. I was hoping that she would retain some of the characteristics of both breeds. I wanted a friendly dog since we have three children, but also a dog that guards us at night. Well, it turns out, that she is a black Golden Retriever. She is all sweetness. There is not a trace of watch dog in her. We had good friends show up recently, at night.
They let themselves into our house with their key and walked right past our lounging Shadow to greet us. Shadow never barked when they arrived and just considered this a non alarm. Our friends visit about once a month and I’m sure that she knows the sound of their car engine. But I would prefer a bit of dog warning. She is a wonderful dog and just to look at her would scare most people with bad intentions.

On the other hand, I have a pure bred white German Shepherd puppy about eight weeks old. She is already acting like a watch dog at this early age. This is a trait that I was looking for. It is obvious that this instinct to guard is hardwired into her. I needed a dog that is highly intelligent, protective of my family and a watch dog, and large enough to wrestle with my son and I. I know that I found what I was looking for. My point is this. If you want a better chance of choosing a puppy that will grow to a certain size and exhibit certain characteristics, your best choice is going to be a pure bred. All you need to do is decide what size of dog you desire and choose the characteristics that you are looking for and then research the breeds. Do your homework and you will not be sorry. I usually wind up with a dog because it is available at the time. This was the first time that I actually chose the puppy I wanted, and even ordered it before it was born.

To be fair, many people own mixed breeds and love them including me. It is a good deed to save a puppy from the pound or save the dog that is obviously looking for a home. But if you are looking for specific characteristics, consider a pure bred.

Lastly, if you are looking for a purebred, try not to buy from a puppy mill. Puppy mills breed purebred dogs by the dozens. The dogs get little care or socialization. The dog moms are abused. Puppy mills often sell through chain pet shops, the internet and even local classified ads. This is not to say that all chain pet store, classified ads and internet ads are bad. When we purchased our puppy ( I found our puppy on the internet) I chose a breeder as close to home as I could (3 hours). I questioned the breeder as to how many dogs she had to be sure that it was not a large, impersonal operation. I visited the breeder and found out that she socialized each puppy in her home and the puppies even had a chance to be socialized with cats. I wanted to be sure that we had the best chance of buying a great puppy, and we did.

German Shepherd Average Litter Size

November 25th, 2007 admin No comments

german shepherd average litter size
What is the average litter size of a German Shepherds first litter?

It varies. I’ve seen as few as one in a litter, and as many as 15 in one litter. There is no set litter size for a first litter or any subsequent litter, as it depends on the eggs and the sperm quality.

There Are Several Important Choices and Considerations to Make Before Choosing a Suitable Dog

Dogs are companions and not just there for burglar alarms or to guard property. Even though they are successful deterrents they should be there as companions primarily. Choosing the right breed of dog is very important, bear in mind the size of a fully grown dog, large dogs need alot of excercise and might not fit into the home environment. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the US and the UK, second favorite in the US is the Rottweiler and thirdly the German Shepherd.

Buying a dog can be an expensive business. The cost of a good pedigree puppy does vary from county to country but very few can be bought for nothing. Depending on breed a puppy many cost from upwards of $1000. Initial vets examination may start at $60. There are several pet insurance companies catering for veterinary treatments, each with there own individual policies, so it is advisable to study the small print carefully. Feeding costs may vary greatly. Small dogs may in theory cost less to feed but often need more specialized and therefore more expensive food. See here for more info on commercial dog food.

Choosing whether have a male or female dog is a vital question. Dogs tend to have more ‘macho’ outlook on life than bitches. They will be possibly more outgoing and on average a little harder to train. However once trained they may be more responsive than females. However the female is more likely to make a better family pet as she will less likely to be aggressive and wander off. See here for more tips on dog training.

Dog shows are a good place to visit when deciding on which type of dog breed to buy. Talk to the owners showing, they will probably be remarkable frank about the pros and cons of their particular breed. Once you have decided on which breed to go for it is a good idea to take your time to find the right dog breeder. Above all make sure you see the dam with the puppies in the litter and make your own mind up as to the conditions in which the puppies have been reared.
