Beware of dog sign?

I live in Ontario, Canada…..I own a German Shepherd. I was told not to put up “beware of dog” signage cause it admits I own a vicious dog….I was told me specially order a sogn that states “Warning, this property is protected by a professionally trained German Shepherd….Enter at your own risk”…I have one on my front and back door. My shepherd will let people in the house but when they go to leave is when he is trained to back them up into a corner and wait till I get home…if they go to leave he is to use a bite to hold him. Will this make me liable cause if I were a judge and I had a case like this I would tell him he is retarded for going into the house whether or not there was a sign. I have tested my dog and he does his job correctly if someone breaks in….
Well I can understand I must control my pet…but if someone breaks into my house I want my dog to prtect my house….this is how I look at it….you shouldn’t be breaking into my house in the first place.

Hello Autumn. I live in Ohio and we have the exact same law about admitting you have a vicious dog. I completely agree that the first crime is committed when someone breaks in your home, but believe it or not, criminals have actually sued in civil court here in Ohio for damages sustained to them during the commission of a crime and won. The point that was brought out in this is that they are committing a criminal act where we, as home owners, are liable for civil suits for damages. It makes no sense to me, but we have no choice. The criminals are far better versed in laws than the average citizens are. Best of luck to you and I hope you can find this useful

Pet Health Awareness: Walking Pets During the Summer Months

We like to take our pets on daily walks. After all, we are concerned with their health and should want them to remain in good shape. But beware of the unseen health risks to your pet that can be associated with the summer heat.

Presently I have 4 dogs in our kennel that are being watched this month. They range in age and their general health conditions vary, and each must be considered when taking these dogs for their walks.

The current makeup consists of 2 puppies only 3-4 months of age, an 8 year old but overweight German shepherd, and a 13 year old mix breed.

A single walking session shows the effects that summer plays on each dog’s individual condition. The two puppies are young, vibrant and full of energy, and do not hesitate at the prospect of a 20 minute walk through the woods. The 8 year old shepherd and the 13 year old mixed are also looking forward to the same walk.

Within a few moments of walking into the woods, (the woods are about 100 yards from the kennel), you can notice a considerable change form the harsh daily sun to a much cooler shaded area of the woods. At this point each dog is holding their own on this simple and short walk.

At the halfway point, now 10 minutes of walking, we take a momentary rest, more for my sake then that of the dogs. Each dog is panting quite regularly at this stage. None of them look at all tired, and none have stopped to drink any water from my bottle.

Due to a recent rainstorm the night before, we have come across an occasional puddle or two for them to wade in. This has helped them stay a little refreshed.

As we head past the 3-quarter mark of this trail, there is a considerable difference in the overweight shepherd’s desire to lead the pack. At this point, the older 13 year old mixed dog, is actually keeping a stronger pace then the young puppies, even though the puppies have stopped a number of times to rest and take on water.

By the time we reach the stretch of trail back to the kennel area, the fours dogs are showing signs of being both tired and thirsty. The last 10 feet lead straight to a waiting pool filled with fresh cold water. The older dogs take a few moments to grab a quick drink while the puppies play and splash around happily. All four dogs are taking a well deserved rest.

By and far they all show some signs of being tired. But keep this in mind that they each have reacted differently to the same walk, under the same conditions. The puppies did tend to pull more on their leashes, which will cause them to put additional stress on their collars and breathing. The overweight 8 year old, while younger showed more signs of fatigue then the older 13 year old. The mixed dog is not carrying around a lot of excess body fat. The extra weight and fat is putting additional stress on the larger dog’s legs, chest and his heart.

Be careful of walking your pets in the hot summer months. Take then out during the early morning or later evenings when it is cooler. Make sure to take water with you, for the pets and yourself, if you’re going to be walking any kind of long distance. When they get back, give them fresh clean water from a hose or kiddies pool. They have thick fur coats and only cool down through their tongues so please let them relax in the shade and take a break during the walk to make sure they are not getting to overheated.

Be careful to avoid heat strokes or other conditions that can be avoided with a few simple steps. Bottom line is that you should not risk your pet’s health simply because it is the summertime and you went for a walk.

German Shepherd Fight

german shepherd fight
Will a pit bull win a fight against a german shepherd or rottweiler?

People keep saying that pit bulls have locked jaws because they’ve been know to still have a strong bite onto something when shot or tranquilize. But research disaproves this and say that there’s no locking mechanism in their jaws more than there is on other breeds. Also, Belgian Malinois (similar to shepherds) have been also discovered to have have so called “locked jaws.” Also German shepherds have more bite force.
I don’t dog fight so I don’t want to hear about being cruel and such. Just curious.

There is no such thing as “locking jaws” in ANY BREED.

There IS such a thing as intense DRIVE and TENACITY.

Traits that working breeds like the Pit Bull & Malinois were bred for. Courage, tenacity and a high prey drive. Not to mention a high level of physical strength.

An APBT with these qualities will pursue *any* task with all his might, ignoring pain, intimidation & danger. “Quit” is a foriegn concept to him. This is where the “locking jaw” myth comes from, because many Pit Bulls would fight to the death in the pit.

Back when dog fighting was legal, there was actually a set of “rules” to determine winner vs. loser based on the behavior of the combatting dogs….so that the dogs did not HAVE to fight to the death & could be seperated hopefully before either dog suffered mortal wounds. A “good” pit fighting dog would die before he gave up.

This attitude makes the APBT excel in other LEGAL “jobs” such as weight pulling, hog hunting, livestock work, etc. They are ultra focused, intense and tenacious.

Malinois were bred for an entirely different type of work- originally herding, but nowadays they are more popular as protection dogs. The similar traits- intensity, focus, extreme drive….are just as valuable in a K9 as they are in any other type of working dog.

BTW, any study about dog “jaw pressure” is inherently inaccurate, because there is no way to ensure the dog is *actually* biting with his maxiumum ability.

There’s no point in trying to determine who would “win a fight” between a Pit Bull & any other breed…it’s a bit immature & even if YOU aren’t a dog fighter, it makes people nervous to talk about FELONY CRUELTY on a public Internet forum. They were all bred for different purposes & have different types of drives, instincts and behaviors. It’s like asking, “Would a Basset Hound win a herding competition against a Border Collie.” Pointless to ask, pointless to speculate. Understanding the traits of each breed should be enough.

The Michael Vick Effect. Do Dog Fights Lead to Breed Specific Legislation?

Have you heard of breed specific legislation? Breed specific legislation is the enacting of laws that deal solely with specific dog breeds. For example, in some areas of the world, Pit Bulls are not legal. Other areas of the world call for the Rottweiler to only be allowed on the street while wearing a muzzle. Is breed specific legislation fair?

Breed specific legislation (or BSL) should concern many of you. If you are the owner of a Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, American Staffordshire Terrier, Chow Chow, Presa Canario or other such breed there is a chance that BSL is in the works in your community to limit your ownership rights regarding these breeds. But why does it happen?

If we were to dissect the root cause of BSL I think we would find that it basically boils down to two major sources.

1. Irresponsible dog owners. For those of you who have been following the Michael Vick case as of late you know that their exist dog owners who do insanely stupid things with their dogs. Mike Vick has admitted his role in dog fighting rings and in the brutal killing of several pit bulls. It is a horrible thing that he did. His life will forever be affected thanks to his horrific acts. Unfortunately the lives of many Pit Bulls will be affected as well because this news story plants further evidence in the minds of the public that Pit Bulls are vicious creatures.

The Vick case is simply the latest. We have seen many stories over the years of Pit Bull attacks or Rottweiler maulings. At the root of each case you will find irresponsible dog owners who have created monsters due to lack of socialization, training, and poor breeding practices.

2. Irresponsible media reporting. The media loves to put a sensationalistic story in the news. They rarely get the facts right, however. Recently a story came out from the estate of Hollywood actor, Ving Rhames. It was reported that a caretaker for his estate was brutally killed by the actor’s vicious dogs. Media outlets from around the world picked up the story and reported that this man had been viciously attacked and killed by several of Rhames’ dogs. That just wasn’t the case. A few days later the real story emerged. When animal control arrived on the scene they found the dead man surrounded by dogs. Examination of the body showed superficial scratching of the skin that occurred while the dogs were nosing around and investigating the man. The caretaker had died of a heart attack and the dogs were merely trying to rouse the man.

Did you know that some of the worst breeds for biting children are Poodles and Cocker Spaniels? You won’t hear about that in the news because it is not sensationalistic enough. The reality is that any poorly trained and poorly socialized dog is capable of biting. The media will only report it, however, if the dog in question is of a certain breed.

So is BSL fair? As long as there are irresponsible dog owners I think there need to be laws in place to prevent these animals from doing harm to us and our children. As a public, however, we need to be instrumental in guiding legislation so that the good dog owners with the good dogs are not lumped in with the bad.

my german shepherd dog has a skin problem i geuss..HELP PLEASE?

my pet is 9 yrs old , he has developed severe itching on his body…once he even nipped himself……have taken him to the vet…but this has been recent…and also noticed that his skin is turning black..no hair loss whatsoever…..also he has this infection in his ear….the doc says probably he hurt himself while scratching his ear….all he needs is an ear cleanup……the ear thing i know….but is his skin turning black……he eats well too…his tummy is already black in colour….he is a full size gsd. help me. what do u think…
thank you all for yer replies……….JEN’s answer reminded me…the doc said itsbetter to remove his testicles..yeh thats what he said……cos he is getting old…..is that alright?? but i hate him going under the knife…… doc says the ear infection and the skin mebbe related…..docs appointment is next week….wanted to know what u guys think….the doc is good…but i hate him

The skin and the ears are most likely related. Dogs with allergies (German Shepard’s are prone to them) will have skin itching and ear infections. Changing the food can help the ears but often regular cleaning and medication – even when there is no sign of infection can keep them from coming back.

There are many options for treating allergies, you should first make sure there is not a mite problem though.

The skin turning black is nothing to worry about – when animals skin has chronic inflammation it activates the cells that produce melanin (what gives us a tan or darker skin) and causes the skin to turn black. Often this will go away when the infection or allergy is under control. It’s not harmful to the animal in anyway though.

German Shepherd – The Most Sought After Dogs

German Shepherd dogs are beautiful animals and are some of the most sought after dogs around today. However in most cases they are not being sought after for household pets. You will most likely find a German shepherd dog as a watchdog or police dog.

German Shepherd dogs are also called German police dogs. They are very intelligent animals and hard working. They are wolf-like in appearance. ON average these dogs weight anywhere between seventy-five pounds and one hundred pounds. Adult German Shepherds stand at roughly about twenty-five inches tall at the shoulder. The dog itself has a slender nozzle or nose, erect, slightly pointed ears. The tail is long and slender and it curves downward.

The German shepherd has a double coat that consists of a medium-long harsh overcoat and a dense, wooly inner coat. The color of the coat may vary from black, brown, gray, or mixtures of these colors.

In Europe the German Shepherd dog is also known as the Alsatian wolf dog. In Europe these dogs were trained solely for the purpose of being watchdog and guard dogs. They were often trained to work with police departments and in World War II they were used by armed services that were patrolling and carrying messages back and forth. Due the fact that they are highly intelligent animals the female German Shepherds are trained as Seeing Eye dogs that are used to aid visually impairment people to get around.

People make the assumption that because these dogs are intelligent and hardworking that they would make well house pets. However, it has been found that this is not always the case. There have been incidents when these dogs attacked other people and children. They work with the police department but they have to be trained to do so. All animals have wild instincts and these dogs are no different. If you are looking to get a dog as a pet it might not be a good idea to look at these dogs.

Anyone have a German Shepherd Puppy for us?

We are in the plans of getting a ‘new to the world’ German Shepherd puppy. We need one at the youngest age possible. It doesn’t really matter the color or pattern combination, at the moment.

What are the strongest gene combinations in a mixed breed (German Shepherd type)?

What are the drawbacks to having a purebred German Shepherd?

What other dog breeds are similar to the characteristic traits of a German Shepherd?

What is an AKC or NKC or D?? (forgot the other two letters)?

Is it difficult to ship a puppy across state lines through the USPS?

Could you please email me photos of the German Shepherds if you are selling or giving them away?

sparkle00999@yahoo.com

Thanks.
I’m in Jefferson County in Alabama
To answer the question on lucy: the reason I asked about the gene combination is that I heard that Pure bred German Shepherds get arthritis; but if they are mixed they have a chance they won’t.

Not me!

Instead of listening to idiots and ignoramuses and big-mouthed know-nothings (your message makes it obvious that those ARE the sources you’ve been getting your misinformation from), show enough intelligence to go to some sources that actually KNOW about GSDs.
You don’t know enough yet to formulate a question suitable for The_GSD_Source, so your next steps are to:
(1) Study the information – especially the schemes – in the websites of GSD organisations such as the GSD Council of Australia.
(2) Study several books written by experts on the GSD – I particularly recommend two: anything by Dr Malcolm Willis, and “the GSD Today” by Strickland & Moses. Either or both is well worth actually buying.
(3) Start working out what you actually WANT a GSD for, to do what.
(4) Start finding out whether there are training organisations within your travel range that you could attend weekly training classes at which an instructor observes your pathetic attempts to train your pooch then starts correcting your use of “the voices”, timing, body language, rewards & reprimands.
(5) Join some GSD discussion groups, but choose carefully or (a) you might be overwhelmed by the number of messages received each day, or (b) you might get into one of the rebel groups who consider that the Standard of the GSD is wrong to ban the features THEY think are “so cute”. By the way, although Britain, Canada, New Zealand and North America have their own rebel “Standards”, a different one per KC, there is only one Standard that actually defines the GSD, and it is far more precise than any of those vague rebel documents. It is FCI#166, the one developed by the SV (Germany’s parent club of the breed), modified by the WUSV (World Union of GSD clubs, on which there is at least one seat for every GSD country), and recorded as the Country of Origin Standard by the FCI. Click http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc to get a copy. After studying it you might realise that almost every so-called GSD you’ve seen in the USofA is eligible for that designation only because back about 1940 its ancestors were indeed quality GSDs and every generation since has used that to be registered as a GSD, regardless of how different it has become. In the 70s the Yank departure was known as the “Hyaena Dog”, but has now gone beyond that and has earned the new label of “NAmerican Ski-Slope Dog”. (They sure look nothing like the drawings in the GSDCAmerica’s on-line Illustrated Standard!)

But forget the whole thing unless:
(1) You have prepared for a dog by creating a fenced and gated area that the puppy won’t be able to wriggle under and the adult won’t be able to jump over, and have built an escape-proof security cage+kennel inside it for when you have to have the dog outside unsupervised;
(2) You have enough energy to
– - actually VISIT any breeder you like the sound of, so that you can check their knowledge & integrity and interact with their dogs,
– - attend some dog shows and training competitions so you can see how pooches from each kennel that passed first muster actually performs,
– - save up to pay a price that is fair compensation for all the time & money the breeder spent getting show gradings and training qualifications and the various health certificates for his brood and checking out the progeny of various similarly well-qualified studs before flying his b.itch to the “right” stud – no WAY will anyone give away a genuine GSD puppy, all that brings you is a mutt with a false pedigree, no registration, no guarantee, no support from the “breeder”;
– - visit the kennel to choose your own pup when it is aged 7-11 weeks, a range that gives the pup time to learn “dog language” from its dam & siblings, yet gives it a few days to settle in with you before it reaches the “need security” stage that occurs during weeks 12 through 16. Odds are that the breeder (by which I mean a REPUTABLE breeder, not these self-professed “breeders” whose only interest is in getting your money) will tell you that there are only 1, at most 2, pups he/she is prepared to let go for the purpose you stated. On THAT you can trust him/her, but whether you and the pup have personalities that ‘click’ cannot be guessed by someone who’s never met you, has not had your property checked out personally or by a trustworthy friend, but is happy to fly a pup to you;
(3) At least one of you is able to take at least a week – preferably a fortnight – off work so that the pup is constantly observed while it learns where it is allowed to go toilet, and during the period when it is most likely to fall sick.

Last millennium, one of the SPCAs reckoned that a Labrador or GSD sized pooch would cost about $12,000 during its lifetime, most of it in the first and last year of its life. What it boils down to is that what you save by getting a BYB or puppy-miller pooch you pay out to the vet for remedial treatments.

If you reach the stage of being ready to start comparing breeders and litters, you could then join my e-group, click “Files” followed by “Choosing a GSD.doc”.

Putting The “German” In German Shepherd

German Shepherds first started being developed in the late 19th century by a man named Max von Stephanitz. Stephanitz is still today credited as having fathered the entire German Shepherd breed. An admirer of the German sheep dog of the time, he chose to breed selectively to procure his most desired traits and weed out those that were unnecessary or undesirable. Stephanitz bred his dogs for years, creating the founding root of the German Shepherd breed and eventually become the dog we know today.

When the German Shepherd was brought over to the United States, the breeders in America changed up the bloodlines of the breed by mating it with other types of dog. It is still up for debate whether these breeders aided or damaged the development of the German Shepherd, as American breeders were working towards a show-quality dog while the original German Shepherd was intended primarily for work.

German Shepherds in the United States have coats that are on the shorter side of medium, usually brown and black, tan and black, or cream and black, but not uncommonly producing an all white or all black variety. The truly German variety of the breed has a longer coat which is occasionally (but rarely) seen in the U.S.

German Shepherds were initially developed by Stephanitz as a working breed. To this day, even with the American cross breeding, German Shepherds excel in the work force as hunters, farm dogs, service dogs, narcotics dogs, and law enforcement dogs. German Shepherds are an exceedingly agile, strong, and athletic breed, with a very malleable temperament. They can be trained to work as aggressive guard dogs or be gentle helpers on the farm.

In their native country, the breeding of German Shepherds is so meticulously monitored that a registered shepherd must have had both its sire and damn Shutzhund certified, which means that they have been evaluated for temperament and ability by professionals. Shutzhund certification pays no mind to the size, coat, or general appearance of the dog, which is vastly different from the American variety of canine judging.

The primary visible difference between true German Shepherds and American German Shepherds, besides the length of their coat, is the lack of sloped hips. True German Shepherds have hips level with their shoulders, as the original breed was intended to. American German Shepherds have a distinct slope at the back of the torso into the hips. Sloped hips are argued over by many international breed enthusiasts, being the desired trait for showmanship in America, but also leading to an earlier onset and more significant risk of hip dysplasia.

Whether you are choosing to acquire an American German Shepherd or seeking out a true German Shepherd, you must research your breeder thoroughly. Because of the popularity of this breed and its potential for strength, there are many unethical breeders out there who are trying to turn a quick profit by mating irresponsibly. With proper research, either variety of German Shepherd can provide you with a loyal worker or a loving family pet.

Husband wants to breed dogs, help us decide on a breed?

My husband has recently expressed a desire to show and breed dogs and we have been bickering back and forth on what breed we should start with. Growing up my parents showed and bred Afghan Hounds. They’re very beautiful dogs but I used to help my parents hand strip the dogs and I HATED it. At the moment we have 4 Rottweilers but we want to “branch out” away from them and work with a different breed. My husband is very familiar with the German Shepherd as his father trains them for guard and police work (yes we’re a very “doggy” family lol) but I for one don’t like the slanted back on the show line. AAH! So frustrating! We definitely want something in the Working Group or Sporting Group. Anyone have any suggestions

Dobermans are beautiful dogs for Show breeding. They’re not too far form rotts either. They are low maintence, no hand stripping needed and low shedders.

I assume you will breeding responsibly and checking for all genetic disorders and registering before breeding.

German Shepherd: The Loyal Protector

It is believed that the German Shepherd breed was developed by “Captain Max” von Stephanitz in the late nineteenth century and originally developed for herding sheep, hence their name. Over the years, their roles have changed somewhat, but by selective breeding; they have been bred for specific tasks or working environments such as protection, tracking and obedience.

According to Kennel Club figures from 2006, German Shepherd Dogs are one of the most popular breeds in the UK and also one of the most popular breeds in the United States. German Shepherds have proven to be very versatile in their working roles, working as guide dogs for the blind, for police and detective work, guarding people, possessions or properties, part of search and rescue teams, any kind of therapy and working in the military. Even though they are well bred and very capable of all of these lines of work, they are also very loving, loyal and devoted pets inside the home. Early socialization is a must for younger puppies so that they do not become aggressive and exhibit dangerous, menacing or threatening behavior when they are adults. Otherwise, German Shepherds are very social, as they enjoy being around people and other animals.

The German Shepherd is a strong, sturdy breed, standing twenty-two to twenty-six inches at the shoulder and weighing anywhere between sixty and one hundred and ten pounds. His muscular, strong body is covered by a beautiful medium length, coarse shedding coat. It has a softer undercoat, which needs to be brushed daily, as they can shed quite a bit. The color of the German Shepherd may vary but can be black, black-and-tan, golden with black-tipped hairs, or gray with black-tipped hairs.

This breed’s personality is marked with an inherent direct willingness and fearless instinct to protect what it considers its “den” or territory (i.e. house, car, and property in a home situation) and “pack” (i.e. human family in a home situation). The German Shepherds temperament is usually poised, calm and fairly even keeled, however when the circumstance demands, they quickly can become very alert, ready to protect or guard and eager to perform the task at hand. They can immediately “shift gears” from loyal companion to being fit and willing to serve and perform as a watchdog, guide dog for people who are blind, herding dog, or guardian or whatever the circumstances demand, no matter how rapid the change.

German Shepherds should be fed anywhere from one and a half to two and a half cans of a high-quality meaty product with a biscuit added in equal part or five cupfuls of a complete, dry dog food with vitamins and minerals.

This breed is considered the most keen, aware and perceptive of his surroundings, atmosphere and person’s attitudes, moods and dispositions. Because of this he must be socialized to cover as many differences in atmosphere and disposition as possible. If this is not done and trained as a puppy, they may exhibit an unexpected aggression or be afraid of certain surroundings or people.

What kind of german shepherd is this?

When I say “what kind” I mean….out of the german working line or german show line or american show line (did I say those correctly)? Link below:

I hope “Curtis M” or “King Les the Lofty” can also answer this.

Answer my other questions too.

My best bet would be that he is a conglomeration of “who knows what?”. Whoever bred him was obviously not targetting “show” lines…of any kind. IF he is out of “working” lines…he’s a piss poor example of a Shepherd. He could’ve been just as likely bred in someones yard, from 2 dogs adopted at the shelter. Without a pedigree, there’s no way to tell “where” he came from. He IS a German Shepherd…other than that….???

Using Chihuahuas In Police Work: Seriously

You might wonder how a tiny Chihuahua can be used in police work, because when we think about police dogs, our mind pictures German Shepherds and other large, powerful dog breeds that can easily take down a criminal. These dogs are loyal officers and not afraid to offer their life in the line of duty. Or we may think about bloodhounds or other types of dogs that police officers use for their powerful smelling abilities. These dogs are trained to seek out drugs or find important crime scene clues. It now appears that the profile of police dogs is changing and a Chihuahua, with a rat terrier mix is now being regularly used.

For the past seven years, Brutus, a Canine Shepherd has been working for the state of Ohio, in the sherriffs department of Geauga County. The county has always been fond of using German Shepherds and Labs in the line of duty. Now there is a new dog being used, Midge a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix. Midge is nine months old and only weights seven pounds, however she has the heart of a police dog. She currently cruises the jail in a little uniform and maintains order.

Midge is a tiny, cute, friendly dog and she is super vigilant and aware of everything that goes on in and around the jail.

A canine trainer for the department of Geauga County thinks she has a big future ahead of her as a drug dog. Midge began with the police force when she was only three months old, and she commenced drug training approximately six months later. Currently, she is being trained to sniff out marijuana, though she has not yet been certified. However, the department trainer states she is well on her way as she observes her larger counterparts sniff out marijuana in cabinets, crawl spaces, air vents and other hiding places.

When she is not being trained, Midge loves to frolic around with Brutus, her Shepherd counterpart.

Sheriff Dan McClelland has thought about the possibility of using a smaller dog for drug detection for about two years. The thought came to him when he watched how hard it was for larger German Shepherds, when trying to manuever themselves into small spaces. He saw how hard it was for a 120 pound dog when they were in a car and had to turn around. This also resulted in the larger dogs damaging the cars and homes of suspects and then the suspects turning around and sue the police department for recovery of damages.

Sheriff McClellands idea about using a smaller dog was reinforced when he saw American customs agents using beagles to check luggages for drugs.

McClelland states there is no reason why a little dog cannot be used just as effectively as a big dog. Midge can search larger rooms the same way as a bigger dog and has the added advantage of being able to go into smaller places to sniff around.

McClelland has no doubt in his mind that using Midge in police work is not something that will fall out of favor and smaller dogs have proven to be a valuable asset to law enforcement.

German shepherd Obedience Training – The One Unbelievably Effective Tool for Training Your German Shepherd

After God knows how many trial and error, I finally discovered the best German Shepherd obedience training method. I can definitely vouch for this method as it requires a certain tool designed to be a highly effective conditioned reinforcer. And this tool has done wonders for my dog’s behavior!

So what is this effective tool I’m raving about?

Okay the tool that I use for my German Shepherd obedience training is called (drum roll please)…a clicker! Alright look, you’ve probably heard of this device before. It’s basically a little plastic box with a metal box on top and makes a clicking sound when you press it.

Before this, I tried using a clicker to train my dog but the end result was unsatisfactory. I clicked , clicked, clicked, gave treat, clicked, clicked, treat again and my German Shepherd Yobo, he just stared at me like I’m a hobo or something.

So, I gave up and tried other dog obedience training techniques and you know what?

Nothing worked!

And then, I stumbled upon a clicker training manual online. I saw a sample video on the site and I figured why not just give the clicker another shot. So, I downloaded the manual and viewed the videos online.

What a revelation!

My German Shepherd obedience training went smoothly thanks to the manual’s easy to follow examples and the clicker exercise videos were top-notch.

Alright! Listen closely. In order to effectively training your dog using the clicker, you must take note of the following points:

(1) Always aim for high rate of reinforcement especially in the very beginning stages of training. Your dog should earn a click/reward every 5 seconds. Don’t linger for too long during training just waiting for your dog to finally perform the correct behavior (my intial mistake!).

(2)  When you teach him a new behavior, do it in a zero-distraction environment. Once your German Shepherd has learned that behavior, then you can bring him out in the open.

By the way, if you’re interested in conducting effective German Shepherd obedience training with this unbelievably effective tool, just follow this link: Step-By-Step Clicker Training Manual

The tactics outlined in the manual are so simple to follow but the later chapters are pretty tricky. Don’t forget to watch the videos too because they help you understand the clicker training procedure.

The Working German Shepherd: One of the Best Working Dogs

Working dogs are canines that are trained to perform special tasks, which cannot be done by ordinary breeds. One of the most common breeds of working dogs is the German Shepherd, otherwise known as the Alsatian. The working German Shepherd is often employed as a guard dog, search dog, rescue dog, police dog, or a military dog. These are usually the areas of specialization for this breed since the German Shepherd is trained to protect. Alsatians are generally obedient, and apt to please. If you want to train working dogs, opt for German Shepherds because they are easier to train.

Alsatians are large and strong dog breed. Their coats are filled with hairs that are either short or long. The color of their coat varies. But the most common are brown and tan. On the other hand, there are some German Shepherds that are completely white or completely black. The ears of this canine breed are erect while its tail is long. It belongs to different lines that have different appearances, capabilities, and behaviors. There is an international breed of German Shepherds that is raised as working dogs.

North American German Shepherds are raised mainly for their looks, which is a very unique characteristic for this line. Compared to typical Alsatians, the former line of German Shepherds has angled backs. This can be bad, especially if the canine is employed as a working German Shepherd. North American German Shepherds do not possess the working traits of other Alsatian lines. If you want to train German Shepherds as working dogs, make sure that you opt for those that belong to lines that are capable of heavy work.

A working German Shepherd is apt to show loyalty to its owner or trainer. It is also a very obedient dog breed, heeding to everything that you have to say. Because of its strong jaw and teeth, it can be taught or trained to show aggression towards suspects or intruders. If you have Alsatians as working dogs, you have to train and breed them properly. If you do otherwise, they will end up with too much aggression or will become too fearful. If you are training German Shepherds, you have to do it the proper way if you do not want your canine to end up in a dog pound.

A working German Shepherd is often linked to police or detective work, giving them the image of danger and fierceness. Despite this stereotypical characteristic, Alsatians are suitable as pets. What is more, they do not show aggression, when trained not to. They can be loyal and emotional dogs. As a matter of fact, a German Shepherd is one of the trustiest working dogs for the blind. But since German Shepherds want to have enough exercise, they are more suitable as rescue dogs.

If you are a dog trainer and you want to promote your passion, you can upload training videos. You can post these at Working Dog Videos, which is a website that offers videos of dogs in training. This website is also helpful to dog owners, who want to learn the proper way of raising their German Shepherds.

My german shepherd is depressed?

I had to put my one german shepherd down due to cancer and i have shyanne my other german shepherd and she has been depressed since i put my other dog roxanne down. She wont play with my other dog, shes pretty slow moving now (shes only two) when i throw a ball she kinda just looks at it when she use-to be playful and i hate to see her like this. What can i do for her?

She is probably mourning. She will be alright. She just got to get use to the other dog being gone. When my chow died my husky mourned and I had to call the vet because I thought she was going to die. I Prayed for her, because she wouldnt eat or hardly drink and when she did, she threw it up. But Believe in the Power of Prayer and Pray and it will be okay. However I am interested in knowing how you found out she had cancer.

Dog Shedding Concern – Which Breeds Are Generally Best?

A dog shedding ıssue can take place with virtually any four-legged friend as all dogs with fur shed. The only breed of dog known not to possess any fur and hence not to lose fur is the American Hairless Terrier. How much a canine sheds and how often is dependent on the breed as well as the lifestyle of the dog. Some breeds have a dense undercoat and a finer top coat while many have merely a single coat of coarse hair. Losing fur is a healthy process governed by the dog’s hormones, in response to lifestyle, exposure to natural light and general overall health. When a brand new coat grows in the former coat must go.

It’s a frequent belief that allergic reactions from a dog shedding ıssue are brought on by the pet fur, however the real culprit is the pet’s dander or flaky skin released when it sheds. In fact hypoallergenic dogs shed and produce dander. They shed as often as non-hypoallergenic types, but due to the fact they possess just a single coat and shed less fur, they likewise shed a smaller amount of dander. These particular breeds consist of Terrier, Bichon Frise, Schnauzer, Havanese, Poodle and Shih Tzu. Varieties mixed with Poodle are gaining popularity because of their hypoallergenic traits, such as Labradoodles (Labrador and Poodle mix) and Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever and Poodle).

Double-coated breeds shed a much larger amount of fur than those with single coats. Short-haired double-coated canines lose fur at the same rate as their long-haired brethren. Bear in mind, though, apart from the mess of shed dog hair and the requirement to hoover the house more often, the dog shedding situation is from the dander not necessarily the fur. On the other hand, because double-coated canines get rid of much more hair they also lose far more dander, and are very likely to bring about allergy-related difficulties for their family. Double-coated, heavy shedding breeds comprise of Husky, Collie, Pomeranian, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian, Labrador, German Shepherd Dog, Norwegian Elkhound, and St. Bernard.

Shedding is crafted by mother nature herself to occur more prominently when the temperature gets warmer and the days get longer. However, dogs that spend most of their time inside are likely to shed all year round. When the dog goes outside the house, its body recognizes the cold and responds by producing a heavier coat. But being inside where it’s warm counteracts that action. A dog shedding situation that appears to be unusual can be the consequence of poor nourishment, anxiety or an illness and should be discussed by a veterinarian. Excessive thinning can be a hint of a much bigger issue like as a thyroid imbalance, ringworm or cancer.

This is the true story of an abandoned puppy that was rescued by NBC’s Today show correspondent Jill Rappaport. Jill named him Jack, and together they lived on a farm. Life with Jill was grand, all right! Jack spent his days running through fields, digging holes, playing with the horses, and chasing deer. But one day Jack’s leg started to hurt. When Jill took him to the vet, she received bad news…

How often should I give my German Shepherd a bath?

If you can see my past question, I just recently got my German Shepherd out of a bad situation. He has fleas little red bumps on his back(What I’m guessing is probably bites, or allergies from the fleas.)

Anyways, I was reading around and got a bunch of different answers for this. From once every other month, to only TWO times a YEAR! I would guess you wouldn’t want to over wash any dog, especially German Shepherds, so you don’t wash away all their natural oils and dry their skin out.

He will be a Indoor/Outdoor dog once we get him all clean and rid of fleas.

Thanks in advance!

As a professional groomer, I can honestly say that your GSD probably doesn’t need a bath more than twice a year. Having said that, I can see that if he has a skin condition (other than fleas) the vet may recommend a monthly bath…every 2 weeks??? Hmmm….
considering the amount of time it takes to dry a GSD coat, I am thinking that too frequent bathing (especiallyh in the winter) may NOT be a good. thing.
Your vet can tell you if there is any underlying concern….treat for fleas, get rid of that problem and move on.
Often problems are caused by allergies and can be treated by a corn and wheat free holistic diet. Spend more on food but les on vet is what it boils down to. Please….I am not suggesting any vet is trying to rip you off….just that skin conditions are OFTEN caused by allergies and are cureable by diet. Some conditions are not.
If your dog has a normal coat and skin condition, twice a year is sufficient (unles he rolls himslef in dead fish or something….LOL
Good luck…hope this helped a but

Security Northampton Top Five Patrol Dogs

If you have a large factory area in Northampton to patrol at night or vast compounds that need checking a guard or patrol dog might be the ideal companion for security guards to consider. The benefit of a dog is its keen sense of smell, power and mere presence that deter criminals.

Below are listed the top five breeds, based on their temperament, agility, bulk and territorial sense.

1. Bullmastiff, a strong, bulky powerful British dog, developed by landowners in the nineteenth century to patrol their estates. Large agile dogs that are able to move quickly and quietly, bred to keep poachers of the land, track and hold them without mauling. The Bullmastiff is a loving and friendly animal within its family pack.

2. Doberman Pinscher, medium size animal with a muscular frame, great endurance and speed. A German breed that is renowned for its obedience, fearlessness and energy. Used by the police and army as tracker and guard dogs. Despite their reputation they are very loyal and friendly family pets.

3. Rottweiler, these are intelligent, robust dogs, very confident and love performing tasks. Rottweilers make ideal security dogs and will carefully assess situations before committing themselves. Their pedigree runs back to the Romans and breeders recognised the herding traits the breed possessed and developed their protective, territorial nature.

4. Komondor, normally found amongst the sheep of the Hungarian hills, a muscular dog with a thick heavy coat, ideally bred for cold outdoor climates. Has a natural protective nature and instinctive herding dog, they are cautious of strangers but like puppies within their pack.

5. Puli, this is another longhaired, powerful dog bred for herding and protecting. They are agile, obedient dogs that perform well in harsh climatic conditions. Found extensively in central Europe and used for shepherding duties.

Although the Komondor and Puli rate higher, you are more likely to find the German Shepherd and the Rhodesian Ridgeback used as guard dogs in Britain. The German Shepherd is a strong, intelligent breed, that is loyal and obedient. These dogs are the mainstay of the British police force. Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed to chase lions, are fearless, muscular animals that make excellent trained guard dogs.

German Shepherd Colors Gsd

Why is it ok for a Panda shepherd to be AKC and a Liver color german shepherd NOT, it seems unfair?

Both are genetic mutations in pigment. and althought there maybe ( in some liver color GSD unprotected colored skin) no one knows YET wether a panda has FAULTS in there mutations.

It just means that the AKC doesn’t accept that as the breed standard. You only need to have the AKC registration if you are planning on breeding or showing. If you love her than it shouldn’t matter what color the dog is. This is the breed standard according to wikipedia…

German Shepherds can be a variety of colours, the most common of which are the tan and black and red and black (shown) varieties. Both varieties have black masks and saddles. Rarer variations include the sable, all-Black, all-White, liver and blue varieties. The all-Black variety is mostly acceptable; however, the blue and liver are considered to be serious faults and the all-White is grounds for instant disqualification in some standards.[15] This is because the white coat is more visible, making the dog a poor guard dog, and is harder to see in conditions such as snow.

When buying a cross breed….(German Shep & Staff Bull)?

….is it pretty much a gamble on what the temperament will be like? When buying a pure breed, obviously you can semi rely on breed traits shining through – but if you buy a cross breed, how do you know which mix you’re going to get, i.e good or bad!?

I’ve owned German Shepherd’s before, and love the breed so much. I am looking at getting another dog soon, but am now thinking about a cross breed, just because I feel I don’t want to feel like I’m replacing our last dog. So, I’ve just heard about German Shepherd X Staffordshire Bull Terrier – anyone willing to take a guess what they are likely to be like temperament wise?! Is it a good mix?! To look at them they are like small GSD’s, but with the black and white colouring of a SBT.

The temperment of a cross breed is determined the same way as the temperment of a purebred. It all depends on genetics – the parents of the cross and their parents – You really can’t make a statement like “All Jack Russells are good with kids” or “Every Golden Retriever acts like the perfect family member”.

Doesn’t work that way, it’s all dependent upon their genes.
