german shepherd red eyes
has anyone heard of a red german shepherd before?

We got a puppy from a friend who says the sire is full blooded german police and the dan is full blooded Shepherd. he is a reddish color with tan markings. his nose is reddish liver colored. he has eyes that are a reddish green color. He is really beautiful mean scary looking. Someone said they were called spirit dogs. hope someone can help. His eyes have a gold coloring around them.

The correct name of the breed is German Shepherd dog, and we usually say purebred because all dogs have the same amount of blood so they are all “full blooded”.

Here is a Website that shows the various possible color patterns for a German Shepherd dog. Sounds like you are talking about a liver dilution color.

German Shepherd Yeast Infection

german shepherd yeast infection
My German Shepherd dog shakes his head and flaps his ears, why?

I took my German Shepherd to the vet, and they told me he had a yeast infection in his ears, then took him back after the problem didn’t go away, and this time they said it was ear-mites, and they treated him for ear-mites and told us to clean his ears out once a week until the problem goes away, but it hasn’t gone away yet. He doesn’t scratch at his ears , but he continuously shakes his head and flaps or moves his ears like there’s something annoying him, everytime we clean them out, there is like a huge build-up of dark looking ear wax, and I don’t know what to do. He is only 2 years old.

Sounds like he either has allergies or a defect of some kind in his ears. One of my GSDs had constant ear problems. Gotta clean his ears regular with eucalyptus oil.

If you don’t clean them out, they will go into a true infection. I cleaned my GSDs ears out every night. You gotta press pretty hard into the back crevices, too. I was kinda reluctant to press so hard at first, but finally realized you wont hurt anything. With a washcloth, not a q-tip.

Takes daily regular cleaning before it will get better. Well, did for my GSD anyways.

Hope this helped and good luck =)

Dog Yeast Infection

Yeast infections in dogs are common in most all dog breeds and if not treated it can lead to skin lesions, sores, and can reproduce very rapidly to abnormal numbers. It can also become a toxic situation that could very easily affect their immune, nervous, and endocrine systems.

Click for 12 Hour Natural Cure For Yeast Infection

For several years it was not treated seriously, but it is now identified as potentially causing allergies, bladder infections, and several other potentially serious conditions.

Yeasts that affect your pet are single cell organisms that are found on the surface of every living thing including your dog. There are two basic types of yeast infections that will attack your pet if not treated properly, Candida albicans which is yeast found in their digestive track and Malassezia, which is the yeast that attacks their skin and ears.

When your dogs immune system is fully functional it is able to control and destroy these organisms; however if it is weak in any fashion, this organism than becomes a voracious feeder that will grow and multiply in astonishing numbers and attack your dogs systems.

Types of Yeast Infections:

The Malassezia form of yeast infections causes a very severe itching. For several years it was thought to be a skin allergy and only recently burst on the scene as being a yeast infection.

If this form of infection is in the ears, it is thought to be a secondary pathogen, meaning it is not the actual agent that causes the infection or disease; however, it is now recognized as the primary agent in the skin.

It was also believed to be caused by allergies, but has now been identified as the cause of several types of skin allergies, a complete reversal. This type of the infection affects more than just the skin; as it can also attack the ears, anal sacs, the vagina and the rectum of your dog. It can and does attack dogs of any age, breed, or sex but is very uncommon in cats.

Large breed’s dogs such as German Shepherds and Shetland Sheepdogs are very susceptible, as well as West Highland Terriers. However, Chihuahuas and Poodles are also at a much higher risk.

This form of yeast infection is generally caused by hereditary infectious diseases that weaken the system. There is a cell in your dog’s body called the T lymphocyte cell that protects against bacteria, viruses, and other organisms that have already infected a cell and are growing inside of the cell.

However, when your dogs system is weak, these cells no longer protect your pet.

The second type of yeast organism, Candida albicans, lives in your dog’s digestive tract and survives by consuming sugars and fats in your pets system. It will usually pose no threat at all to your dog and lives in a balance within your pet. It is kept in balance by a substance called Lactobacillus bacteria found in the digestive tract that produces lactic acid.

But when that balance becomes uneven, this fungus than rapidly multiplies as well, and will travel to several part of your pet’s body through the bloodstream bypassing this acid. Once released, it is also able to multiply very rapidly.

Symptoms:

The first symptoms you will notice usually start to surface in the summer when the humidity is very high, and your dog’s skin begins to itch. Naturally, your dog will scratch this itching which will than start sores to surface. The symptoms could be either localized, or generalized, meaning that they cover a large portion of your pet’s body.

If it is localized, it will generally affect your dog’s ears, muzzle, toes, or their anal areas. If it attacks the toes you will see your pet constantly licking their feet. In the anal area they will try to scratch the best they can; and if on the muzzle, which is easier to reach, they may scratch so hard if develops sores, blackening skin, as well as hair loss.

If it is generalized, your pet will start to actually stink as the yeast is spreading and causing the hair coat to become greasy and oily. If severe, you will see both skin lesions and sores. Symptoms of the stomach yeast infection will center initially on the bladder, if severe it attacks the liver.

Treatments:

Click for 12 Hour Natural Cure For Yeast Infection

There are several ways to treat yeast infections in dogs, but there is growing evidence that yeast infections may be caused by grain based foods and a lack of certain minerals.

The conventional treatments will be based off what is believed to be the underlying cause such as bacterial infections or seborrhea. Medicated shampoos will be the most common treatments. Localized treatments of small areas will be treated by anti-bacterial cream. Antifungal shampoos will be used in very severe cases.

Home remedy treatments for yeast infections will include apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, and plain yogurt. Vinegar affects some dogs adversely, but yogurt appears to be extremely effective in the digestive form of infections.

However, as in most all types of treatments, the best method will be in the preventive stages with your dog.

There are two minerals, zinc and copper that will be a tremendous help in preventing this from occurring.

Zinc is required by your dog in the production of nucleic acids which are the building blocks of the body as they assist both RNA and DNA. They also assist with the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates which help to keep the stomach form of yeast in check.

But more importantly it binds protein and fat together which is exactly what this single cell organism waits to attack when the cells become weak and do not bind together. It also plays a huge role in your dog’s body in normalizing swelling and heat, the other growth area of yeast.

Copper is perhaps nature’s finest anti-fungal agent and in several tests have proven that a deficiency of copper causes yeast infections. Zinc is also known to deplete copper in the body, and as a result copper and zinc should always be taken together.

Summery:

Yeast infections in dogs are very common and can be both irritating as well as very dangerous to your pet. The proper preventive nutrients can help to stop it from ever occurring and can save your pet a lot of unnecessary pain.

I am an avid lover of pets and my wife and I have had several pets throughout our years. We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a “mutt” that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field.

He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds.

After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend.

After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach.

Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats.

I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process.

Owner’s Guide to Discoid Lupus in Dogs

Discoid lupus in dogs is an autoimmune condition that results in discoloration of the nose.  In rare cases, it can also affect other areas of the skin.  Professionals have yet to find a specific cause for this problem, but genetics may play a role due to the fact that certain breeds as more affected than others.  Some of these breeds include Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, and Collie.

Symptoms

As you already know, this condition begins as loss of pigment around the nose.  As the disease gets worse, your dog may develop scaling of nasal tissue and sores.  The nose’s surface may also become smooth instead of having it’s normal cobblestoned texture.  These sores aren’t bothersome to some dogs, but others are very bothered by them.

Diagnosis

Discoid lupus in dogs causes symptoms that mimic other diseases.  They include ringworm and different types of dermatitis, especially solar dermatitis.  In order to diagnose this disease accurately, the veterinarian will have to perform a biopsy of tissue from the affected area.

Treatment

Treatment of this condition will depend on how advanced it is.  Mild cases can usually be treated using a strong, topical ointment.  Severe cases of discoid lupus have to be treated with corticosteroids.  It may also be useful to supplement your dog’s diet with vitamin E.  However, you should be aware that any benefits of vitamin E supplementation will take months to take effect.

As mentioned earlier, discoid lupus in dogs causes sores to form on your dog’s nose.  Ultraviolet light only makes these sores worse.  Therefore, you should try to limit your dog’s exposure to ultraviolet light.  This is especially important during the summer months.  Applying sunscreen to your dog’s nose will help, but you need to make sure he doesn’t rub it off.

About the Author

Discoid lupus is just one of many illnesses that can affect your dog. There are many others such as dog Cushing’s disease and congestive heart failure. Dog-illnesses.com provides a wealth of information for dog owners about many different diseases. So, stop by today to learn about some of these diseases that can affect your pet.

German Shepherd Fistula

german shepherd fistula
My german shepherd was just diagnosed with perianal fistula. How effective is Cyclosporin?

I read that he may have this condition for the rest of his life. What are your experiences with this medication and this illness?

My Great Pyrenees/Samoyed mix had a peri-anal fistula. After researching everything, we went for the cyclosporine. We were told that our options were removing her tail & the anal gland causing the problem, as big dogs with heavy, hanging tails are prone to this, or cyclosporine. Removing anal gland CAN cause an incontinence problem, according to the specialist we saw, and we feel that removing the tail is cruel-plus we were told that isn’t a fool-proof way to help the problem. We went for the cyclosporine, & tho costly, it WORKED! We had one relapse that antibiotics helped, but the cyclosporine did the job and we’d go that route again if we were faced with this issue again.

german shepherd fistula
has anyone had REAL success treating perianal fistulas in German Shepherd Dogs?

You really should speak with your vet about this issue. I am under the impression that your best bet is medication to treat the condition. However, the most common medication used (to my knowledge) is cyclosporin. With this medication, it is necessary in most dogs to continue cyclosporin continuously in order to treat perianal fistulas and prevent recurrences, and it wouldn’t be too surprising that you would find that withdrawal of the medication will often result in a return of the problem. Since this medication is rather expensive (especially with continuous use), veterinarians have begun to use ketaconazole and cyclosporin combinations, because ketaconazole enhances the effect of cyclosporin, allowing lower dosages to be used in some dogs (as little as a third of the original dosage of cyclosporin may be effective!). It is still best to test for cyclosporin levels in the blood stream when using ketaconazole, as a method of establishing the most effective dosage combinations, because cyclosporin is variably absorbed in dogs.

Alternative medications are other immunosuppressive agents, including prednisone and azathioprine, also usually used in combination.

Surgery can be helpful, but its drawback has been that the fistulas will often recur after the surgery. But if your dog is not responding well to medications, it is still a viable option. However, if medication does control the problem and it just recurs when you stop the medications, I’d avoid surgery, personally.
Although there are no conclusive findings about this, that I know of, there may be some value in using the new hypoallergenic diets (like Hill’s z/d, or Purina’s HA), for this condition.
Good luck!

Training German Shepherds – Training Tips and Resources

German Shepherds make great pets and are one of the most versatile and hardest working dogs in the world. They can be trained to do almost anything and are often trained to be police dogs or other service dogs. Because of their versatility, training German Shepherds needs to be approached a little different than most other dogs. Read on then check the links at the bottom for some great dog training resources.

German Shepherds are athletic, strong, and relatively large for a dog. They love challenges and will do almost anything if you show them what you want. Before you start, there are some things you need to know about training German Shepherds and the dog breed in general.

When they are young, they can be very excitable and rambunctious. Because of their large size even when young, there can be problems knocking over the elderly or small children that may be around. They aren’t being aggressive or mean, this is just because of their size and nature. Letting your dog know this is not acceptable is one area you really need to address right away with your German Shepherd training.

If left alone, they can also be quite destructive because of their size and excitability. A bored puppy or young dog can destroy a house if left alone without any stimulation.

It is important that you socialize any dog to make sure they are comfortable around other people and dogs. German Shepherds are no exception. You need to put them in non-threatening situations where they are around people and other dogs. This should prevent them from developing aggression issues towards strangers or other dogs.

There are several ways to go around training German Shepherds. The first way is to sign up for professional dog training. This can be quite expensive, though, and tie you to a specific class time one or more times a week. If you miss a week, you may come in the next week and find out your dog doesn’t know what the other dogs do and you are now on your own catching up.

A potentially better and certainly cheaper way to train your German Shepherd is to buy a dog training book. This will cost you a lot less than professional training class and for most dogs this will provide all the training information you need. If you have a problem dog, you may have to look into professional help, but I would try the DIY method first. You are going to have to be involved in training process either way so why not try to do it at home when you want to.

In my opinion, there are 2 keys to German Shepherd training and pretty much all dog training. First, you must be consistent and use simple commands. Second, you must use positive reinforcement. Your dog wants to please you more than you can imagine so make sure you praise them when they do a good job.

Do yourself a favor and download the Secrets to Dog Training to learn all the secrets you need to know to make your training experience a pleasant and rewarding one. Good luck with your new pet!

What to Know about German Shepherds

A sound temperament is a must in a German Shepherd Dog (GSD). By sound, I mean a disposition where one minute you can let a protection trained GSD play alone with your 5-year old child, pull on its ears, pet its head, tug on its tail and NEVER-EVER be in harms way; while the next minute, it should turn into the “terminator” and crush its enemies as soon as it senses an intruder.

There are three conventional methods of dog training that you can choose from in order to train you German Shepherd Dog (GSD). They are training with treats, training with treats and clickers, and training with praise. All three methods of training will work; however, there is one that stands out from the rest. That is, oral praise. Why? Because you want your dog to listen to your commands even when you don’t have any toys, clickers, and/or food. Imagine you dog wanting to jump at your every command simply because it wants your praise and love and not because you are going to bribe it with treats. Once your dog gets used to getting treats for performance, it will cease to perform when you don’t have any more treats left. So, treat your GSD with kindness, and train it with praise!

Training a GSD which has not been genetically selected for working ability is that much more difficult than one that has already been selected for that trait. In my opinion, the age-old debate about beauty vs. functionality of the pure-bread GSD dog was settled by the founder of the German Shepherd Dog breed, Captain Max Von Stephanitz, when he said in his book,”…Utility is the true criterion of beauty…” (The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture, pg. 163). Many American GSDs today have been selected for beauty rather than functionality in order to win dog shows. In many of these dog shows, obedience and showmanship are separate events and a dogs’ working ability is never considered in events where the dogs are required to meet breed standards. Hence, you have the decline of the traits for which the breeds were originated for in the first place. So when you set out to buy your dream GSD, look for temperament, health, and working ability first, and beauty last.

The importance of beauty, however, should not be ignored when it comes to posing your dog for a memorable photograph. Unlike other breeds, GSD’s are shown differently in the breed ring. The proper method for posing your GSD for the breed judges is called a “stack”. “Stacking” is the method whereby one allows the forequarters of a dog to be shown parallel to one another when looking through the viewfinder of a camera and when one allows the hindquarters of the GSD to be arranged so that the limb facing the camera is placed backward while the limb facing away from the camera is placed forward. Most professional handlers who pose their GSD’s for photographers walk them into a “stack” instead of artificially manipulating them into it. If you plan to stack your GSD for a professional snapshot, remember to compose the image in such a way as to depict it from the tip of its nose to the tip of its hindquarters; NO MORE, NO LESS (please visit my web site to view photographs of how a GSD is stacked for the camera).

These topics cover just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to knowing the German Shepherd Dog breed. You can learn more about the GSD by visiting my web site or by getting involved in breed organizations like the German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA). Both my dogs act sort of weird…?

ok i have a pure german shepherd dog and a chow/lab mix. the german shepherd goes over the other dog and blaze (german shepherd) holds his tail high and stands still. then the other dog licks the thing he pees out of :S what does this mean?

Sounds like a dominance ritual to me.

My dog has a dark spot on his skin that is flaky?

My 1 year old German Shepherd/chow/lab mix has a couple of dark spots if you put your hand through his fur. When I try to pull it out it obviously hurts him because he tries to bite me. When I pull it out it is all flaky, before it was in just one spot but now its in 3 spots on his back. My friends told me it could be ringworm, or either because my other dog bites him while they’re playing and rips the fur out. Once I pulled enough of the flaky stuff out, there was just dry blood under it, I can’t take him to the vet at this time, but I plan to take him tomorrow. Is this skin problem something I should be really worried about?

Give him a bath then see if it’s still there, could be dandruff…If it’s getting bigger, get it to a vet.
