New home for my German Shepherd puppy?

Hi guys ive got a 8 month old german shepherd male, i love him to death but ive fell pregnant and he has so much energy i just cant handle him anymore. I feel he would benefit from being a working dog as he is so bold and hyper he would make a great police dog he is scared of nothing. I wont put him in kennels to be rehomed i cant do that to him id rather keep him. Are thete any police officers reading this that can give me some advice? Would the police be even interested as i know they get there own puppies from known breeders please help im so so upset but i just cant handle him anymore any advice please? Thanks x
I live in Glasgow, he would need to go to an experienced person whos had shepherds before coz hes wild and very strong im a vet nurse so i should be able to control him but i cant im embarrassed oh i dont know..

Why don’t you contact the Glasgow Police Canine Department directly and offer them the dog? They will evaluate your dog and if he is suitable for their requirements they will take him on, if not he will have to be re-homed in the normal way.

The German Shepherd Dog

Dogs called German Shepherds were first exhibited at shows in Germany towards the end of the nineteenth century but they were hardly Shepherds as we know them today being rough coated, short tailed and rather resembling mongrels. The German Shepherd Dog as we now know it didn’t really appear until after the Second World War.

The breed has grown enormously in popularity and is now one of the most popular pedigree breeds in the UK as a pet, it is still the favourite working breed for many forces especially the police and they are widely used for security purposes.

It is a fine sight to see a well-trained GSD with his handler, working well to serve and protect. Unfortunately one of the saddest sites is the poor GSD used to guard premises often chained up alone in some dismal filthy yard with a lifetime of incarceration and little stimulation to look forward to.

The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent beast who will show undying devotion to his master but he is a dog that needs company and stimulation to be at his best.

If you are thinking of buying a German Shepherd as a pet and you have not previously owned one, it is important to research the breed and talk to experienced owners so that you fully understand what you are taking on.
GSD’s do indeed make wonderful family pets but it is important to remember that this is a working breed and that they do have certain characteristics that can make them more difficult than your average Retriever, Labrador or Collie.

The characteristics of a good working GSD should be firmness of nerve, attentiveness, unshockability, tractability, watchfulness, reliability, and incorruptibility together with courage tenacity and hardness.
A German Shepherd is naturally protective and territorial which is something to bear in mind if you have lots of visitors to your house when careful introduction may be required to assure your pet that the visitor is not a threat to his family.

This is also a breed that requires a lot of time, stimulation, training and exercise – you will never wear them out, they will always be ready for more. A bored, lonely GSD can be very destructive and can cause an awful lot of damage to property in a short space of time.

Perhaps some of the less endearing traits of this breed are the tendency to be very vocal which can be a big nuisance and may be a problem with neighbours. They also shed hair in copious amounts all year round so your vacuum cleaner will work overtime and it’s unlikely that your clothes and furnishings will ever be free of dogs hairs again as well as what you are eating invariably being contaminated with that stray hairs.

The biggest problem with the German Shepherd Dog is the fact that to a large extent the breed is being spoilt by irresponsible breeding by inexperienced back street breeders who care nothing about preserving the breed but only about making money from the selling of puppies, Health and temperament problems are all too common, so it is important to take expert advice and try and find a reputable source if you are contemplating buying a puppy.

Consider first taking on a rescue German Shepherd Dog from a reputable rescue that should be able to give you a good assessment of a particular dog. Remember too that an older GSD will be a very rewarding addition to the family and will be housetrained, won’t chew, well behaved, probably require less exercise than a young dog and will be very loyal and grateful.

What do you think they look like?

Okay, so I have a three-year-old female and a three-month-old female. Both we got from rescues. I know there’s DNA testing that we could do to find out what they really are, but we don’t see it as a necessity. Besides, it’s fun to see what people think they look like. So, what do you think?

1)http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm25/Tannerlady/n1339136404_30130776_6984.jpg

That’s the 3-year-old. The shelter (I volunteer there) told us she was Golden/Lab mix. Then again, she looked a lot different when she was a puppy. :P We think some German Shepherd because of her coloring and the barrel chest, but she runs like a Border Collie, flat to the ground.

2)http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm25/Tannerlady/n1339136404_30262252_826.jpg

That’s the 3-month-old. The shelter where we got her said she was a mix of Lab/Aussie Shepherd, but Malley’s agility trainer said she looked more like a Fox Terrier/Pointer mix.

So, what do you think?

1. Is a defently a German Shepherd mix maybe with Lab, Because if she was just a Golden/Lab she wouldnt have a german shepherd markings..

2… Looks like a Aussie or a collie mix

Many of human society try to guess what the breed is.. I seen alot of dogs they say what they are and they arent even close…

Cute dogs by the way!!!

Top Ten Family-Friendly Dog Breeds

Deciding which breed of dog to get can be both exciting and daunting at the same time, especially when you have a family. Some traits to take into consideration are patience, playfulness, exercise and grooming requirements, and size.

Below is A&E’s Top Ten Dogs For The Family list with an added personality description of each breed.

1. Beagle
Beagles make wonderful family dogs because they are so loving and energetic. They are extremely adaptable to various climates and routines. They are quite intelligent, which makes them easier to train, although their energetic nature can cause them to be a bit naughty if proper training is not administered.

2. Bichon Frise
Bichon Frise make great watchdogs without being aggressive. They are good with other pets and children and do not require a lot of exercise. They also have a curly coat that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.

3. Border Collie
Border Collies love to have close handling with people, so they’re perfect for both work and play. They require a considerable amount of physical activity to stay happy, as they are a herding breed.

4. Boston Terrier
Boston Terriers are famous for being gentle and well-mannered. They get along well with other household pets and tend to be very friendly with strangers. Harsh or heavy-handed training methods can result in the dog becoming timid.

5. Boxer
Boxers are very energetic and love lots of affection. They make excellent guard dogs, however they can become very excited with visitors they’re familiar with. While they’re very friendly, a boxer wouldn’t be a good choice in dog if you have small children, as boxers tend to become excited and mimic a boxing motion when they jump.

6. Cocker Spaniel
Cocker Spaniels are a happy breed that are content as either a hunting or companion pet. They are sensitive and don’t usually challenge the authority of their owner. They live well with both children and other pets.

7. German Shepherd
German Shepherds are renown for their loyalty, courage, and intelligence. They are eager to please and are patient and gentle with family members. In order for them to be happy, they need to have a job or “purpose,” which is why they make such excellent police dogs.

8. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are very easy-going and train very well. They’re wonderful with children and other pets and require A LOT of attention and physical activity. They retain a puppy-like personality until mid-life or later, so they make perfect companions for active owners.

9. Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers have an easy trainability. They’re also gentle, fun-loving, and boisterous. They LOVE to swim and fetch, so a family with a yard or one who walks a lot would be ideal.

10. Poodle
Poodles are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. They tend to be on the sensitive side and require a lot of affection from their family. They are great with children as well as other pets.

Ask her why she keeps calling your dog that and see what she says. If she is truly your friend, when you explain to her that it bothers you she should stop. Don’t let it bother you, she is obviously just not grown up enough yet .

German Shepherd care?

hello how much care does a German Shepherd need? How often do you have to give them a bath things like that thanks (and does any body know of any good German Shepherd breeder in virginia again thanks)
and what are the health problems i have to think about and what can i do about them and how long do thay live

I have a german shepherd now and just recently had to have my older one put to rest, but they are the best dogs. I got both of my through rescue groups. My older one was a pure bred and my younger one is a german shepherd/husky mix. My older female had numerous problems including arthritis in both of her hind legs, as well as a skin problem that came and went. I had to give her a bath every 5 days with medicated shampoo for about 6 months until the problem cleared up. then it would only flare up occasionally. She also had thryoid problems and was on a pill a day for that. I only bath my younger one when he gets extremely dirty from playing at the dog park or running in the yard if it’s muddy. They are known to have hip problems as well as other medical problems. You might want to reasearch the breed on the internet so you can see what you might be getting into. My current dog is the mix but looks mostly like a shepherd. He is great and very very friendly. Loves to run and play, likes to chew things, enjoys walks, riding in the car, and hany kind of activity that involves his human family. Very gentle and loving. Even with all the problems my older dog had, I would take her back in a second and do it all over again. They can be stubborn if they want, but they are easily trained, and very very smart. Don’t know about the breeder as I always get my through rescue.

Awesome Dogs of the United States Military

After the attack at Pearl Harbor, in 1942, the U.S. Military joined with the American Kennel Club to establish Dogs for Defense. The American Kennel Club recruited dog owners to donate quality canines to the military. The Quartermasters Corps was responsible for supplies, food service and materials management. On March 13, 1942, the Quartermaster Corps of the army took charge of turning these pets into soldiers. The U.S. Marines also trained handlers and canines to be soldiers in the Pacific during World War II.

At first there were over 300 breeds of dogs accepted into the program, but eventually the list was narrowed down to German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Sheepdogs, Doberman Pinschers, Farm Collies and Giant Schnauzers. Of the 19,000 dogs screened for the program between 1942 and 1945, 45% were rejected. In the beginning, civilian volunteers trained the recruits, but after the first training center opened in Front Royal, Virginia, the training was done by the Quartermasters Corps soldiers for the Army and the Marines trained their own canines.

The training took 12 weeks. It started with basic obedience and progressed to training with gas masks, muzzles, military vehicles and gunfire. After the basic training was complete, the dogs were moved on to training in specific duties.

Sentry dogs: Walked on short leashes and warned  their handlers by growling and barking. They were always on patrol with their handlers.

Scout or Patrol dogs: These dogs did the duties of the sentry dog but they were trained to work silently. They detected snipers or ambushes from the enemy. These canine soldiers saved the lives of many of their handlers.

Messenger dogs: These dogs required extreme loyalty because they were used to silently carry messages back and forth between their two handlers.

Mine dogs: These canines were trained to find trip wires and mines. There were 140 dogs trained as mine dogs during World War II, but it was determined that the dogs had trouble finding mines during combat.

The majority of the dogs were trained as sentries. Of the 9,300 dogs that were trained, 3,174 were used by the Coast Guard. These dogs were used to guard the coastline, harbor defense and protecting industrial plants and airfields.

In 1944, the military started using  canines for combat. The sentry dogs in combat could detect enemy soldiers up to 1,000 yards away. In order to alert their handler without giving away their positions, the dogs would stiffen, and the hair on the dog’s back would stand up. Over the years, military working canines have been used in not only World War II, but Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and they are currently deployed in Iraq. It is noted that in Vietnam, canine war dogs saved as many as 10,000 lives.

One of the first war memorials was erected on Asan beach in Guam in 1944. It was moved to the United States Naval Base on the island in 1994. This particular memorial is dedicated to the Dobermans that served with the Marines during World War II. The inscription on the memorial statue reads…”always faithful”.

german shepherd syndrome
why would my 3 year old german shepherd all of the sudden start pooping all over the house??

she pooped probably 8 piles of turd spread out all over the house and she also peed everywhere. she has never done this before and she is completly potty trained. she is kinda a nervous dog so i was wondering if its maybe irritable bowel syndrome?

I have said this before and cannot stress enough. Our pets do not suddenly change behaviour for no reason. We always look at possibility of medical problem first. I would say something is very wrong and your dog is getting your attention in the only way Mother Nature taught them..

It could be something minor but I would call vet, see how to collect a sample to be tested. Rule out medical problem first. The next cause would be something really stressful/different in her household. If this relates to July 4th and lots of fireworks activity around area then that can cause many animals a lot of craziness as it is loud/scarey. Change of diet?? Change in outdoors routine?

Dogs will do their best to make their person pay attention. So listen up!

Doberman Pinscher – the Facts Every Owner of This Dog Breed Should Know

The Doberman Pinscher is a relatively ‘young’ breed of dog. This mixed breed dog (Doberman Pinscher have Rottweilers, Thuringian Shepherds, Greyhound, Great Dane, Weimaraner and German Shorthaired Pointer in them) was created by German tax collector Louis Dobermann in the 1860s after his many travels to crime-infested towns. He wanted to breed a watchdog that could easily handle any situation that might arise. The resulting breeding produced a dog that has strength, stamina and boundless energy.

Average Doberman Pinscher males will stand 26 to 28 inches tall and females 24 to 26 inches. Their weight will average 66 to 68 pounds and Doberman Pinschers will live about 13 years. Most Doberman Pinscher coats are black with rust and markings of red. Some Doberman Pinschers are born all white (albino). There is some disagreement if this indicates future medical problems. The hair is short and smooth, needing minimal grooming other than the occasional brushing and bath.

Doberman Pinschers shed less than other breeds, thanks to this coat. Doberman Pinschers are intelligent and like to please their masters. They develop close relationships with their family, but can be stubborn. Firm and consistent training and correction is a must with this breed, and not just from the master.

All people who come in contact with a Doberman Pinscher regularly must not be afraid to assert their position as the alpha. Doberman Pinschers make excellent watchdogs and guard dogs, and are often times used in law enforcement. Their desire to please their master and loyalty makes them a good family pet. However, they are not always the best choice with children. While Doberman Pinschers enjoy playing with and protecting children, some of the boisterous yelling and sudden movements children make can be interpreted as a threat by a Doberman Pinscher and it may attempt to defend itself.

Doberman Pinschers have a lot of energy and need to exercise at least once a day, but not in the cold, as they cannot tolerate it well. If given sufficient time to exercise, they may do all right in an apartment setting. Doberman Pinschers do have medical concerns. Some Doberman Pinschers can develop cervical spondylitis (wobbler syndrome) due to fusion of neck vertebrae and compression of spinal cord, Von Willebrands disease (an inherited blood disorder), obesity in middle age, bloat, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and congenital heart disorders.

There is a website that has great information on Doberman Pinschers and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

Wolf Hybrids……………..

show me pics of wolf hybrids, and name the breed

like for example:

wolf/german shepherd
or

gray wolf/coyote..etc.

Well i dont have i pic but i know for a fact that Alaskan Malamutes are part wolfs (dont know the other part). Although if it is too much wolf then it is legal.

coyote german shepherd hybrid
Where can you adopt a Wolf or Wolf Hybrid?

I already know about raising wolves, and I know it is legal in my town. I know all of that. I have raised a Wolf Hybrid in the past, and she unfortunately had to be given away to my aunt in law. I have also raised a Coyote/German Shepherd Hybrid when I was still living with my mom. I had her for a about a year, and my mom dumped her somewhere while I was in school. (I know, I know….Trust me.)
I now have a 1.7 acre lot with a pretty damn big house, and 3 dogs. They have been around Wolves before, and got along great. I just can’t find anyone who knows where to find cubs now-a-days! I live in Riverside County, CA. Where I am, it’s legal to own. And, we don’t have any neightbors to bother. Literally, we are the only house on our street. Lol.

Trained German Shepherds Serve Their Master Loyally

No matter what you’re aiming for in your German shepherd pet, you will need to train them one way or another. Trained German shepherds can serve more than just a loyal plaything for you or those that you love. They serve as unnerving companions, friendly company, and your family’s guardian and protector, which is why you need to pay great care and attention when attempting to train them.

By nature, German shepherds are quite dominant creatures, which is why you need to be able to train them properly. To this end, when planning to train your German shepherd, you will need to be as consistent, strict yet lenient as possible in order to achieve the desired results. Thankfully with the help of the internet you will be able to avail quality e-books and training information that will aid in your venture.

Know that from time to time, your pet will prove to be somewhat headstrong and this is normal. Your pet will have to see first that you have what it takes to dominate over him. He will need to see if you are fitting enough to be followed, and this is particularly the area where you will need all the help that you can get. Some sites will of course be able to give you with some of the basic information that you need in order to get started – but not enough to successfully give you the support to finish the entire course.

This is the reason why, for in depth discussions and training tips on your German shepherds, you will need the help of e-books or other relative online resources that will offer much more. Yes you will be somewhat obliged to spend, but considering all the information that you will be getting in return, it’s but a pittance of the cost and will be greatly worth every penny that you spend.

Trained German shepherds are quite a sight to behold, much more when you experience it firsthand. Not only will your pet get the exercise he needs, you in exchange will have the peace of mind that no matter what happens, your loyal pet will always be at your side and ready to protect you no matter the circumstance.

My German Shepherd And Worms?

My German Shepherd Dog is 5 months old and I Think he has worms i just saw like small sesame seeds in his stool they are really Tiny and barely noticeable my dog looks healthy because he’s running part of the time and i read that for my Puppy’s ears to stick up he needs to be dewormed to be healthy enough to pick up his ears should i worry Oh and at what months should i start taping his ears if they don’t start sticking up?Thank You For your Information and your help.

Take a poo sample to your vet for testing. The vet can then tell you not only whether he has worms, but what kind, and therefore what kind of medication he needs to treat them. It’s really the only way to be sure.

I can’t really say that deworming is a significant factor in their ears standing. The most important factor is genetics, followed by good nutrition and chew toys, and not messing around with the ears (playing around with them).

In my experience, if a dog’s ears haven’t stood on their own at least once before the pup is five months old, they will have to be taped if they are to stand at all. If it’s just a soft ear tip instead of a whole ear, it’s usually not to terrible to fix. If it’s the whole ear you have to ask if it is really worth it. If the whole ear is floppy then the dog just plain doesn’t have good ear leather and even if taped to stand erect, the ear leather won’t get any better. Ear leather is determined first by genetics and then by good prenatal and perinatal nutrition, and finally with well balanced puppy food.

Honestly, I wouldn’t tape a dog’s ears. They hate it, it is painful, they tear it off and you have to put it back on and everyone is just miserable. It’s only cosmetic. It will still be the same dog with or without erect ears. A dog whose ears do not stand correctly naturally shouldn’t be bred or shown anyway. Why not just let him be him?

Otherwise he’s still a great dog, right? All of my dogs have flaws. In fact all dogs of all breeds everywhere have flaws. I’m just thankful when the flaws are cosmetic instead of health related (like hip dysplasia, DM, megaesophagus, etc.).

Malasseziasis in Dog: a Case Report in Nepal

Case History:

Wesley, a 7-year-old maleGermon Shephord , was presented because of a nine-month history of hair loss and thickened, greasy skin. The dog was moderately pruritic, but the owner could not recall if pruritus had preceded or followed the appearance of the skin lesions. The dog seemed healthy otherwise. A vinegar and water solution had been used topically as well as selenium sulfide shampoo with minimal improvement. Prednisone was dispensed six months before presentation but did not seem to help. The owner had tried different brands of dog food but with no improvement.

Physical examination:

Physical examination revealed severe alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and lichenification of the ventral chest and. The legs and ventral neck were also affected. The hair was greasy and epilated easily. The outer ear canals were thickened and contained a brown discharge. The peripheral lymph nodes were moderately enlarged. Wesley’s abdomen seemed distended, and the liver was palpably enlarged but non-painful. His testes were symmetrical but small and soft.

Differential diagnoses

Lichenification can be seen with many chronic infectious (bacterial, demodectic mange, fungal), allergic (fleas, food, atopy), or seborrheic skin disorders, but lichenification of the ventral neck, chest, and axillary areas is particularly characteristic of yeast dermatitis (Malassezia pachydermatitis). Lichenification is also seen in West Highland white terriers affected with epidermal dysplasia, but this was less likely in Wesley’s case since epidermal dysplasia is a heritable keratinization defect in which signs usually begin between 6 and 12 months of age.

Because of the physical examination findings of abdominal distention, hepatomegaly, and small testicles, we suspected that an underlying endocrine disease (hyperadrenocorticism, hypothyroidism) may also be present.

Diagnostic tests

Cytologic examination of skin imprints showed many yeast, as well as many cocci. Skin scrapings were negative for mites. Cytologic examination of otic discharge revealed many bacteria (rods and cocci) as well as yeast. Bacterial culture of the ears grew Staphylococcus aureus and B-hemolytic Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, and Malassezia species. All bacteria were sensitive to several antibiotics, including enrofloxacin and cephalothin, but were resistant to gentamicin.

The results of a complete blood count showed a mild normocytic, normochromic anemia (hematocrit = 32%; normal = 35% to 57%) and a slightly elevated total white blood cell count (14,000/l; normal = 5,100 to 13,000/l) with a mild left shift (bands = 700/pl; normal = 0 to 450/l), The serum chemistry profile results revealed hyperproteinemia (8.5 g/dl; normal = 5.4 to 7.5 g/dl) presumed to be due to elevated globulin concentration (albumin concentration = 3.2 g/dl; normal = 2.7 to 4.4 g/dl). Urinalysis and ACIH stimulation test results were normal. The thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration was 0.8 ng/ml (normal -0 to 0.5 ng/ml), and free serum total thyroxine by equilibrium dialysis was 5 pmol/L (normal = 10 to 45 pmol/L). We diagnosed yeast and bacterial dermatitis and otitis secondary to hypothyroidism.

Discussion

Malassezia pachydermatis is a normal inhabitant of canine skin, especially in the areas of the external ear canals, feet, lips, and perineum.1 A change in the skin environment, such as increased sebum or moisture, or an alteration of the epidermal defense system predisposes animals to yeast overgrowth. The most common underlying diseases associated with yeast dermatitis include allergies (flea, food, or atopy), endocrinopathies (hypothyroidism or hyperadrenocorticism), or keratinization disorders such as primary seborrhea or epidermal dysplasia. Long-term exogenous corticosteroid administration or long-term antibiotic therapy may also predispose dogs to yeast or bacterial infections.2-4

Clinical signs of Malassezia dermatitis in dogs include alopecic, lichenified, erythematous skin with adherent yellow scales. Most affected animals are severely pruritic and often malodorous. Areas most commonly affected include the ventral neck, auxiliary and inguinal areas, and flexural surfaces of the hocks and elbows.2-4 With chronic infections, the skin becomes hyperpigmented3 and elephant-like. Pedal malasseziasis can present as red, moist interdigital areas, often with a concurrent bacterial infection. Brown staining of the proximal toenails has been associated with yeast paronychia.3 Breeds predisposed to malasseziasis include West Highland white terriers, cocker and springer spaniels, basset hounds, and German shepherds.2-4 Some animals may have a yeast hypersensitivity and severe pruritus with relatively few organisms.3,5

It can be diagnose Malassezia dermatitis by identifying characteristic clinical signs and cytologically examining the skin. The cytology can be performed in several ways. You could obtain a skin impression by pressing a clean, dry slide onto an affected area, and then heat-fix and stain (Diff-Quik [Dade Behring], Gram’s, or Wright’s stain) the slide. Alternatively, obtain scale by gently scraping a dulled scalpel blade over affected skin, and smear the debris onto a clean, dry slide that is then heat-fixed and stained. Or firmly apply clear acetate tape onto several areas of affected skin to obtain debris. Then place the tape sticky-side down onto a slide on top of a drop of new methylene blue.

View slides under 40X or 100X magnification. More than one or two yeast organisms/hpf is clinically relevant, especially in conjunction with clinical signs. Obtaining a skin biopsy sample is usually not necessary or particularly helpful, but histopathologic findings include marked parakeratotic hyperkeratosis and spongiosis with Iymphohistiocytic inflammation.2-4

Treatment for Malassezia dermatitis includes topical or systemic therapy. Topical therapy alone may be sufficient in patients with mild localized disease but may not adequately treat a generalized infection. Topical therapies include degreasing shampoos containing benzoyl peroxide, tar, or selenium sulfide and antimicrobial shampoos such as chlorhexidine (at concentrations greater than 2%), miconazole nitrate, or ketoconazole. Advise clients to shampoo the animal every two or three days initially and then decrease the frequency as the condition improves. The lather should be left on the skin for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. Other topical therapeutic options include 2% lime sulfur dip (applied after a degreasing shampoo) and leave-on 2% chlorhexidine or miconazole conditioners. In situations in which cost is a concern, you can suggest a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water as a whole body rinse after bathing or as a daily spray on affected areas.

In cases of generalized Malassezia dermatitis, topical therapy is often used in combination with a systemic anti-fungal medication such as ketoconazole (5 to 10 mg/kg orally once or twice a day given with food). Because of the potential for hepatotoxicity, measure serum liver enzyme activities periodically in animals receiving long-term (more than three weeks) ketoconazole therapy. Itraconazole (5 to 10 mg/kg orally once a day) and fluconazole (5 mg/kg orally once a day) can also be used but are considerably more expensive.3 Oral antifungal therapy is continued for three to four weeks. To decrease medication cost, some clinicians prescribe 5 to 10 mg/kg of ketoconazole given once a day for the first 10 days and then every other day for 10 days.3 Griseofulvin is not effective against Malassezia species.Of equal importance in diagnosing and treating yeast dermatitis is identifying and addressing the underlying cause. Depending on the patient’s history, signalment, and physical examination findings, other diagnostic procedures could include a hypoallergenic diet trial, tests for flea or inhalant allergies, or blood tests for endocrine or metabolic diseases.

This case was unusual because skin disease in West Highland white terriers is most commonly associated with allergies, and hypothyroidism is uncommon in this breed.

Conclusion And Recommendation

Dog was treated topically for yeast dermatitis with benzoyl peroxide shampoo (twice a week for three weeks, then once weekly) followed by a leave-on 2% chlorhexidine conditioner. He also received systemic anti-fungal medication (10 mg/kg ketoconazole orally once a day for four weeks). For the deep bacterial pyodemla, cephalexin was dispensed (22 mg/kg orally t.i.d. for eight weeks). The bacterial otitis was initially treated twice a day with a topical combination gentamicin sulfate-betamethasone valerate-clotrimazole ointment; we changed this to a topical combination enrofloxacin-dexamethasone-ear cleaner mixture (6 mI enrofloxacin, 12 mg dexamethasone, and 24 mI DermaPet Ear/Skin Cleanser [DermaPet]) when we obtained the culture results. We also prescribed levothyroxine sodium (0.022 mg/kg orally b.i.d.) and recommended a post-pill thyroid hormone measurement after three weeks ensure adequate dosage.

At the 30-day recheck visit, Wesley’s lichenification was 500/0 improved. He had minimal pruritus and was starting to regrow hair on his legs. The owner reported that the dog’s attitude and activity level had improved markedly. Cytologic examination of the skin showed few yeast and bacteria. Serum liver enzyme activities revealed a moderately increased alanine transaminase (331 U/L; normal = 12 to 108 U/L) suggestive of ketoconazole- induced hepatic injury. The ketoconazole dose was decreased to 10 mg/kg every other day for two weeks to resolve the residual yeast infection, and then the drug was discontinued. Five months after initial presentation, the owner reported that Wesley was doing well with no recurrence of lichenification, pruritus, or hair loss.

How to Choose Trained Protection Dogs

Do you worry about the security of your family, both at home and out? While alarms and bodyguards both help protect your family, trained protection dogs are even better. Protection dogs can go anywhere with your family and, if they have been approved, will work well with children. It’s a fact that most criminals will think twice before tangling with a dog, particularly one that looks sharp, like a German Shepherd. Where to Find Trained Protection DogsIt takes serious training to turn out quality protection dogs. If you have children, you will want to ensure that the dogs you choose are good with children and not prone to biting unless told to.There are a few exclusive training centers that not only train protection dogs, they also breed them. These are your best options because the dogs are specifically bred to have all the qualities you need in a guard dog. They will often provide adult dogs, fully trained, or you can choose from puppies which will need to be returned frequently to the center for training sessions that last for several weeks. Be sure to select the right training center. They should have several checks in place to weed out any dog that is not competent enough for the job. There should also be tests to see which dogs will do well in a family with children. Your best bet is a center that provides dogs they have bred themselves. What Kind of Dog?Contrary to popular belief, protection dogs don’t have to be German Shepherds or Doberman dogs. In fact, you’ll find a wide range of dog breeds available as guard dogs. What does that mean for you? Well, you can select a dog that will bond best with your family and which will fit in with the kids. A Lab, for example, is a better choice for a larger family, because they tend to be more personable than a German Shepherd. That being said, discuss your options with the center where you plan to purchase your dog. They can give you a better idea of which breeds they have available and can tell you exactly which of their dogs is best for your family. The trainers know their dogs and will be able to recommend the best protection dogs for your needs. What Will Trained Protection Dogs Do?Protection dogs can be one of two types. They can patrol outdoors and stay alert for intruders, or they can stick close to your family, going everywhere with them to protect. You may want both types, but dogs which stay close to the family are particularly useful when going out. If you are a parent, you know that extracurricular activities take your kids out of the house quite often. A protection dog that can go with them is a very valuable asset and not nearly as conspicuous as a guard dog.In the event of an attack, trained protection dogs will attack on command to protect your family member. If there are several attackers, the dog will establish a perimeter around the person or persons he is protecting, keeping the attackers at bay very efficiently. These dogs are not taught to kill, merely to immobilize an attacker until the police show up.The high level of training that protection dogs receive means they are very adept at stopping anyone who might have bad intentions. Trained protection dogs that have been approved for use with children can be let into your home, taken to soccer games and other events without worries. Should a situation arise, a good protection dog will instantly handle things, keeping your children and spouse safe and sound.

Why is my puppy peeing on my bed?

We have a 11 week old German Shepherd (boy), and he’s randomly peeing on my bed. I have a mattress on the floor, sheets and a blanket, nothing more. He’s done this 3 times now, and I don’t know how to make him stop. We’ve been crate training him for 3 weeks now, and he’s got a thick blanket in it. Either way, I haven’t let him in my room after the second time he did this, but just today I let him in while I was getting something out of my room and the just walked right on the bed and peed on it (I took him out less than 20 minutes ago). Any help is appreciated.

He’s a puppy, he doesn’t understand. He probably just pees where it’s most comfortable for him to sit. Just keep using POSITIVE reenforcements. Don’t rub his nose in it and don’t yell. Reward him when he pees and poops where you want him to. Try treats as well. Good luck!

Dog Training Tips And Tricks saves you from  a lot of stress

This group has a variety of both behavioral and physical-a history of hunting assistance often being the only regular bond among some of the hound breeds. This group houses the sheepdogs and cattle dogs, including the amiable collie breeds and those regal kinds, the corgis. The instinct to herd in some of them can be strong in these breeds even if most of these are now plain companion dogs that have never even seen a sheep. The millions of mixed-breed dogs around the world are a testament to that.

That’s part of the fun. A pampered, yet surprisingly active companion today, it once was a skilled truffle hunter. Unfortunately, the sheer popularity of some of the sporting breeds, most notably cocker spaniels but also Labrador and golden retrievers, has led to a rise in health and behavioral problems. It now serves only as a loving, albeit somewhat desk bound companion.

The Akita (Japan), the Komondor (Hungary), the Portuguese water dog, the Newfoundland, the Saint Bernard (Switzerland), the Alaskan Malamute, the Bernese Mountain dog (Switzerland) and many more make this group a veritable United Nations of dogs. Before getting to any of these things, let’s start form the most basic first:finding the right dog suitable for you. Combining the taut muscles and compact power of the bulldog with the tenacity and aggressiveness of the terrier, some controversial bull terrier breeds have been involved in some highly publicized biting incidents, several involving small children. Be especially careful in finding a reputable breeder of these dogs.

Most mammals sweat to keep cool. Special taste receptors on their tongues are believed to allow canids to recognize chemical composition variances such as salt and impurities in different water sources. Ears are third-quarters tipped over facing forward.

The rose ears found in some bulldogs and pugs, a variation of a drop ear, is folded inward along the back edge, with the tip curving over and back to show the opening to the ear.
