Since pets are now bad for the environment…?

…..according to the book “Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living” by Brenda and Robert Vale, a German Shepherd is just as bad as a large car, a cat is as bad as a Volkswagen Golf, and 2 hamsters are equal to a plasma TV.

“If you have a German shepherd or similar-sized dog, for example, its impact every year is exactly the same as driving a large car around,” Brenda Vale said.

“They found cats have an eco-footprint of 0.15ha – slightly less than a Volkswagen Golf. Hamsters have a footprint of 0.014ha – keeping two of them is equivalent to owning a plasma TV.”

If this is true, my question is: Was Michael Vick doing his part for the environment by staging dog fights, where at least 8 were killed?

WHAT??? Sorry, this just sounds strange and I have never heard this. I wonder what methodology was used to come to these conclusions? If this is really the case, my household’s footprint could fill a used car lot and an electronics store with all the of the pets we have owned in the past. I wonder what a goldfish would be??? My goodness, I could have left a footprint the size of the Titanic with all of the fish I have had….This whole thing just makes me wonder if life is worth living anymore…no pets!! An Michael Vick can burn…seriously, there is never a rationalization for animal cruelty. Never.

Breed Exercise Requirements

Dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and then there are the breeds. It is important to consider the dogs breed because a lot depends on that. Everything from the type of food they eat, amount of food, diseases, behaviour, grooming and much more varies from one breed to another.

If we were to take a look at a German Shepherd or a Pomeranian for that matter then you will see that they require a lot of grooming due to long hair but due to the size difference the German Shepherd will eat more than the Pomeranian. Now if we take a Dalmatian and a Doberman, we see that both are large dogs but the exercise requirements for Doberman are much more than a Dalmatian. Hence, dog breeds are a major determinant in exercise requirements.

In fact each of the dog breed profile is different from the other in spite of the fact that all dogs came from Wolves. Such a huge disparity of color, shape, size is not visible in any other type of animal and definitely not in the wolves. The exercise requirements mostly depend on the dog breed profile. There are some dogs like a pooch or a Pomeranian that active indoors and hence don’t require too much of outdoor activity. On the other hand dogs like the Labrador retriever, the Golden retriever, the shepherd dogs belong to a different dog breed profile that can be classified muscular dogs and hence need anything from moderate to heavy outdoor activities.

Some of the dog breeds like the Labrador and German Shepherd are more intelligent than others and hence, require a lot of mental stimulation apart from physical exercise. A member of the herding group, the German Shepherd is fearless, bold, hard working, and alert. They are esteemed for their loyalty, deep devotion, and courage. This breed thrives on human interaction from their family and does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time. It is a highly intelligent breed and as such, needs a great deal of mental stimulation. The GSD will develop a very close bond with his handler and will want to be with him/her as much as possible.

The Labrador Retriever needs fairness, firmness, consistency, reward, and respect. They excel in tracking, police work, search and rescue, agility, competitive obedience, guide for the blind, and as service dogs for the disabled. Intelligent dogs, Labradors are easily trained, making them ideal for use in field sports, obedience competitions, as search dogs, as guide dogs and as hearing dogs. These dogs take a great pleasure in any of these activities.

Both these dog breeds are deployed in bombing squads or anti-narcotics due to their intuitiveness and sense of smell. There is a certain misconception that many people have regarding the larger dogs. There are many who think that if they have a big backyard in their home then that is sufficient. The truth is that big dogs and especially guard dogs or sniffer dogs need more than a big backyard. They need proper behavioral training and miles and miles of outdoor space like a park for exercise and fun activities.

It is always crucial to see the dog breed profile first and then pick up a dog. If you are living in an apartment and are working 8am-8pm then according to the dog breed profile what you really need is a pooch or a smaller dog that doesn’t need too much of exercise. But if you are living in a ranch and can take your dog out for regular walks or runs then according to the dog breed profile you can choose a bigger dog.

What are some good female dog names?

Well, I recently found out that I’m getting a bitch for my birthday in April, and I’d like some good names. Preferably human names. (Eg, not ‘Whiskers’ or ‘Patch’.)

I’m only asking on here because my folks have such outdated views on popular names that they’re suggesting me things like Mabel and Zen.

Note: Incase it somehow matters, the dog I’m getting is the standard colored black and tan German Shepherd.

Thanks for all your help.

Jared.

German Shepherd Origin and History

The German Shepherd dog breed has its origin in the late 1800s when Max von Stephanitz from Germany began developing a breed that would later become the dog we know today as the German Shepherd.Von Stephanitz desired to produce a dog breed that could be utilized as an all-around working dog.

Developed from various farm and herding dogs of his time, von Stephanitz’s original German Shepherd was derived from a herding dog he acquired in 1899, and he and his friend Artur Meyer formed the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde which was the first club in the German Shepherd dog breed history. This club and von Stephanitz kept tight control over the breed until his death in 1936.

He determined which dogs would be used to breed based on how well they did in various shows and trials that were the precursor to the Schutzhund tests still performed today. His main criteria for judging a dog’s success were both its usefulness coupled with its intelligence. Von Stephanitz also promoted the utility of the breed to the German government for work in both the police and the military as well as other all-purpose uses as a working dog breed.
German Shepherd Breed History

Following the creation of the German Shepherd breed by von Stephanitz in the early 1900s, the breed’s popularity soon soared and became one of Germany’s most popular dogs. Serving in both World War I and II, the German Shepherd was a favorite military dog, primarily in Germany, but American and British soldiers were also impressed by the breed and brought the dog home following both wars.

In fact, one of the most popular German Shepherds dogs was Rin Tin Tin, originally from France, and brought to America by an American GI following the first world war. Rin Tin Tin went on to make 26 movies until his death in 1932 and contributed to the breed’s enormous popularity.

In addition to its use in the police and military arenas, German Shepherds have a history of usefulness in other areas, is known as a successful show dog and has been a popular family pet. German Shepherds were the first dogs used as seeing eye dogs in the late 1920s and Helen Keller, an avid dog lover, owned a couple of German Shepherds.

The first German Shepherd Club in America was formed in 1913 and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908. Instantly recognizable, the German Shepherd continues to be a popular dog breed, and the German Shepherd is continually in the top five most popular registered breeds as determined by the AKC.

German Shepherd Pup has trouble keeping water in his mouth?

I have a German Shepherd puppy that’s about a year-and-a-half old, and he loves to drink water. He doesn’t drink abnormally large amounts of water or anything, but he drools it out like crazy. He’ll drink from his bowl and lift his head and a bunch of water just drips out from his mouth. It isn’t too problematic, but it is kind of gross to step in a puddle of puppy washback water.

Such is life with a German Shepehrd! Mine all do the same thing and always leave a trail behind from the water bowl. Ahhh you gotta love em’. LOL!

Check out the forums over at http://www.germanshepherdworld.net/ We are all a bunch of GSD lovers that are always sharing stories like this and so many others!!! I think you would find it very entertaining!

Learn From The Experts About Grooming A German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is deceptive as many might think the heavy double layered coat needs additional care. In precise fact, less grooming is required than expected. The external coat of the dog is thick with medium long hairs while the undercoat is far denser and softer. The undercoat does extra duty by keeping the dog safe from UV rays in the hot summer months and keeps the dog warm during chillier seasons.
One principal to stick to when grooming a german shepherd is well taken care of is to discern that he is getting the right diet and nutrients.

Best Grooming A German Shepherd Companies- Click Here

Beef like meat, chicken or lamb are great options. If you choose to concoct food for your dog, make sure that it has the right proportions of all the basic diet necessities the dog needs to stay in tip-top condition.
Instead of the rounded or curved stomachs we see in humans, dogs basically have s straight stomach. This can make them to have problems while digesting their plants. Corn or wheat and other plant based materials can be troublesome for the animal and they should make up a tiny fragment of your dog’s diet. When you are certain that the dog is getting a superb diet, you can move on to the grooming needs.

You may also be certain to take away the dead skin cells and loose hair clogging the coat. A basic metallic brush or slicker will do a brilliant job if used correctly. You must take care not to bring about a lesion or scrape the dog’s skin while brushing.

Employing a variety of brushes with different size brush heads will help to make certain you reach all bits of the dog.
The frequency of baths will depend on the site of you home and your dogs favourite entertainment. For instance, if your dog should love the great outdoors, it is sort of certain he will necessitate a bath more often compared to dogs that like to stay in the house. If the dog is an indoor dog, taking a bath every few months will be sufficient.

If you pat your dog and dust puffs off his skin, that is a good sign he requires a bath. Also, if he is beginning to smell, a bath will swiftly solve that problem and make him more delightful during hug time.

The correct shampoo is essential when grooming a german shepherd. A shampoo with aloe added could be a sensible choice if you aren’t troubled with fleas. Nevertheless, with regular care, your German Shepherd is certain to look beautiful all year long.

Does anyone know where to get a German Shepherd / Collie mix dog?

My parents have one and he’s the best dog we ever had. In fact, everyone I’ve seen that has one says the exact same thing.

I don’t live with my parents anymore, and I want one of my own. Anyone have any ideas where i can get one in Northern California?

Choosing a Right Dog – Tips and Things to Consider

As we see healthy and lovely dogs around, it really seemed so exciting and so much fun getting in-love to have one. It was really nice feelings to have a loyal companion and friend that’s always there to cheer you up. But before you decide what kind of dog want to be with, it is always better to be well-prepared and make best decisions to ensure a good quality of life for you and your pet. There are thousands and millions of dogs suffering and being euthanized around and it is really hearth-breaking, so instead of becoming part of a problem, let us be a part of solution. Be responsible enough and equip ourselves with good information and education. A dog is a part of the family for a dozen or more years; the commitment to feed, shelter, and nurture a family friend for that amount of time should be based on rigorous analysis of an appropriate breed for the family circumstances.

Here are some points to consider when choosing a dog that’s perfect for you. First is the size, a large dog is not suitable for an apartment, for elderly owners, or for mild-mannered women because of their strength and incredible energy and exercise need. Large, agile dogs adapt well to apartment or condo living as long as they get a daily walk, and some are gentle enough that anyone with a firm voice and manner can easily handle them, they are good for house with children. Small dogs may be unsuitable for families with active children or elderly or infirm relatives who could trip over a small, bouncy critter. Some dogs are lethargic and others are very energetic and needs enough exercise a day to let these energy settle down. Those who fail to give enough exercise for very energetic dog, dogs tend to bored and divert it on unnecessary behavior like being too destructive, aggressive and many other behavior problems. Active families would be happier with a pet that can jog, hike, and play ball, and more sedate folks would most likely prefer a quieter animal. Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, and Corgis are not jogging companions, and Airedales, German Shepherds, and Border Collies are not typical couch potatoes, they love to walking and usually likes to perform agilities around. All dogs need some exercise to stay healthy. Most adult dogs will not exercise themselves, so time for walks and other activities is important. Some breeds are fairly easy to train, and some are quite difficult. If you lack time and patience to deal with a dog that is difficult to train, then an older dog from a rescue service may fit your bill as well as a pup of a breed that is traditionally easier to train. Intelligence is not necessarily an indicator of trainability; smart dogs often have their own agenda and require firmness of purpose on the part of their owners. Smart dogs bored easily, specially on activities that are repeated, have some different routines and activities to do, or a higher level of training like on agility training class where they can show what really they got. As a rule, terriers, hounds, and northern dogs are tough to train because of their intelligence and independent natures, and sporting and herding dogs are easier to train. The sharpest-working obedience breeds are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, German Shepherds, and Shetland Sheepdogs, breeds that developed to closely with humans.

Dog barks, they range from a lovely small bark of a puppy into annoying barks that are so embarrasing and might turn into hating neighborhood, too much barking can lead to noise laws or even pet limit laws. Terriers and scent hounds use their voices to broadcast their progress in chasing prey animals. Shelties and Collies bark to tell the sheep to git back to the barn. Canaan Dogs bark to alert their families to potential intruders. Barking dogs do not endear owners to their neighbors in apartments, condominiums, and close-knit suburbs. Dogs bark if they are too bored so ensure you have enough time and ability to train, walk and have playtime with your pet. There are some special collars available to deter barking dogs and some training methods that can help in some cases, but if potential owners take the noise factor into consideration, problems are more likely to be minimized. Owner’s capabilities and commitment always have a dog with good behavior and temperament. Breed and group temperament can be described, but there is latitude within that description for individuality. Thus Akitas are declared to be tough animals, loyal, aloof, dominant, aggressive to other animals, and often challenging. However, many Akitas are sweet and cuddly, love small critters, will climb in laps if allowed, and are anything but aloof and dominant. Terriers are scrappy, yappy, tough, and independent, but Airedale Terriers bond very closely to their humans and are somewhat protective. Hounds follow their eyes or noses and are often oblivious to human presence, but Dachshunds bond closely with their families and Greyhounds and Whippets are sweet, gentle pets.

Meticulous housekeepers and folks with little or no time for grooming will be happier with dogs that don’t accessorize the living room with dog-hair dust bunnies a couple of times a year. Double-coated dogs may also have longer, stiffer guard hairs that can penetrate bare feet like splinters. Long-coated and double-coated dogs shed, shed, and shed some more, leaving tufts of hair to float about the house and land everywhere. Dogs with oily outer coats can develop a doggy odor that can be unpleasant, dogs with heavy coats may suffer in southern climes, and dogs with short coats may shiver in the north. Brushing is needed to remove the dead hair from wire-coated terriers, poodles, and poodle relatives, and professional grooming is necessary to maintain texture and color in wirehaired terriers. These breeds are generally better than heavily shedding breeds for owners with allergies. Your environment, dogs can be destructive to gardens, lawns, and landscape plantings. Common problems such as urinating on lawns or shrubs, roll in flowers, chomp on vegetables and branches, dig holes, and generally cause havoc unless they are restrained from doing so. Sturdy fences will keep dogs from entering gardens if they are tall enough so dog owners use underground radio fences or wireless fences.

On health, have good knowledge on what to feed for your dog. Ask or look for some comments or testimonials about certain dog food before giving it to your dog. Dogs in the wild naturally eat raw food, it was natural, healthy and cheap so consider them, ask your vet about it. A good vet will say about dog raw food, if they always recommend those process food then look for a new vet that could suggest. Although purebred dogs are sometimes denigrated as harboring all sorts of genetic abnormalities and mixed breed dogs are sometimes claimed to be healthier than their purebred cousins, the truth is that all dog have the same range of health problems. Some of these problems are genetic, some result from exposure to disease or parasites, and some are the result of non-inherited birth defects or injuries. Joint problems, including hip and elbow dysplasia and loose kneecaps; eye problems; cancers; skin diseases; heart and other organ diseases; and more affect canines of every size and background. Some dogs have additional problems caused by short muzzles, long backs, giant or diminutive size, or other physical features. When you finally decide on what kind of breed, research everything about this breed. Make sure you get the dog on the right place, visit first rescue or shelter house where then can study if the dog will be perfect for your lifestyle. Also make sure you are getting the dog on true responsible breeder, they should have all the papers and required shots, etc.

Puppy question?

Hey i just got my German Shepherd puppy yesterday. I was wondering two things.

1. do you like his name? we named him Braskius (because we live in nebraska) we call him Brasky for short

2. How long will it take for his system to regulate? He seems to be doing quite well but he has some diarreah which is probably from the stress. Will this regulate itself within the first week?

I am proud to have a 3 year old Black GSD in the family, and it was one of the best choices I’ve made, so I had to answer your question:

1. Yes, I think it is very cute (not that it should affect your name choice).

2. Yes, it should get better soon. GSDs are known for sensitive gastrointestinal tracts and have problems like this often in stressful situations or if they eat something they aren’t used to (this includes more treats than normal).

If it lasts more than a week contact your vet to make sure this isn’t a more serious problem, and make sure he gets plenty of water to counteract the dehydration that could occur from frequent diarrhea.

Where do I find a free German shepherd puppies in Nebraska?

Is it free to adopt ?

Shelters are a GREAT way to rescue a dog. It’s not free to adopt because their are always fees that cover the cost of spaying/neutering, vet check-ups, initial shots, etc. The costs vary. Also, I’m assuming that you are aware that even if you find a “free” GSD, nothing else will be free for the life of the dog, such as food, shelter, beds, toys, leashes, training, and so on…

You can however, try Craigslist.org and search their pet section. Some honest people (after you weed them out) are on there, sincerely posting an add to re-home their family dog due to financial hardships, moving into an apartment that doesn’t allow dogs, not being ready or able to properly care for a dog, etc. Some ask for a re-homing fee, some just want their dog to go to good home free of charge.

You can also try the newspaper.

Just use common sense when evaluating the honesty of the person giving away the dog as well has the health/personality/temperament of the dog and if it will fit in with your lifestyle.

Good luck! I hope you find what you’re looking for.

dog runaway when open kennel?

I brought around 3and 1/2 years old German Shepherd before three days. that owner told he is keeping this dog in kennel for full day . he use take her only 15Min’s per day to out from kennel. but I took her around two three hours and yesterday around 4-5 hours to familiar with my garden. The owner told she may be became pregnant with in two three days and I feel she is still in heat condition. Today when I open kennel I could not catch her ran away through road. I call her by name but did not care about me.. Is she finding her former owner our finding dogs.. she does not eat much also like my last dog
I am from Sri Lanka and we not have dog trainers or place .may be one or two in colombo .. I am fare away.. give me please advice

If she’s in heat, she’s probably roaming to look for a mate. Your best choice is to keep your gate open and set some food out, or go after her with a nice big steak.
