Grooming Your German Shepherd the Way the Professionals Do, Part 1

Taking care of the basic health and grooming needs of your pet can be expensive if taken to a professional, but most of the things a professional does you can do yourself. For this example we’re using the same type of dog that I have, a German Shepherd Dog.

It’s important to remember that most unique breeds will have very different grooming and health requirements. Doing grooming yourself will cause much less stress to your dog, and in some cases they will even learn to enjoy it.

My German Shepherd looks forward to grooming (She knows that it is time for plenty of rub downs, playing, and treats.) You want to make sure you praise and reward your dog for being good while being groomed – you want to make it an experience that they look forward to.

It is true that German Shepherds have a “double coat”. This means they have that nice thick layer of outer fur that’s longer and more coarse and a softer fluffy, downy layer of fur beneath.

Flying Fur

While German Shepherds shed year round, shedding becomes really noticeable twice a year when they “blow their coat”. This is where they basically shed most of the summer, (then later on winter) coat over the course of a week or so.

To keep this from being a complete mess, you can groom more frequently and make sure that when grooming you get deep into the undercoat as well. Getting into the undercoat with a standard brush proves very challenging, it’s better to get something that’s specifically designed to clear up the undercoat like an Undercoat Rake.

Grooming Like a Pro

When grooming, you should begin at the head of your German Shepherd and brush back to the coat & tail with a slicker brush. You should then comb through the coat with a metal comb to remove any other loose hair. If you want you can go over the entire coat with a rubber curry brush. (This will help make the coat shinier and also give your dog a good rubdown)

If it’s shedding season, you will also want to use a shedding blade, (With this tool you groom from the rear to the front). It is very important to know the proper use of a shedding blade, and your groomer can help you with tips for proper use and safety. You should never use a shedding blade if you’re not 100% sure of the proper technique.

Grooming tips for your German Shepherds include many different steps, all of which are very important. And grooming is much more important than many people believe it to be. It’s true, German Shepherds are relatively maintenance free compared to many dog breeds but your GSD will need a little grooming TLC occasionally as well. Please do not neglect this area of German Shepherd ownership.

German Shepherd Chow Chow

german shepherd chow chow
A german shepherd/chow mix that scratches 24/7. Please Help!?

My dog, Winter, scratches all the time. He doesn’t have fleas. I believe he may be getting bit by ants or he may have skin allergies. I hate seeing him like this. And recently it’s getting worse. Unfortunately, the vet can’t see him until next week. Can you answer these questions for me?

What is the proper dog food to by for dogs with itchy skin?

What is the proper shampoo for dogs with itchy skin?

How often should I bathe him?
-I was doing once every two weeks is that too much or too less?

What else should I be doing until his appointment?

If it’s that severe, I’d first give him some benadryl to get him some relief. Start with a half a 25 mg tablet and if that doesn’t do it you can give him the other half.
Then you should call your vet back and tell him your dog’s in pain, they’ll usually make room for emergencies and even though it’s not a true emergency, your dog is miserable so try to talk them into an earlier appointment. Or call other vets.

Corn and wheat are the main source of food allergies but soy and other ingredients can also contribute.
Lamb/rice is generally considered a better choice for dogs with skin problems but there are other options with turkey/barley, oatmeal, salmon, and limited ingredient diets.

If you don’t see bites it’s probably not ants. Could be grass, mites, or even a thyroid issue. Get an oatmeal based shampoo and some analgesic cream or aloe to help him through til his appointment. And if necessary you can continue to give benadryl, but even though I give it to my dogs based on veterinary advice years ago, I encourage anyone call their vets to confirm any advice given here before they try it.

Add: forgot to say once a month is plenty for a bath unless he really gets really dirty. Just brush regularly to help keep him clean.

Top Ten Dog Breeds on Apartment Restriction Lists

All dogs can be potentially dangerous, however some dogs are more dangerous than others. Various types of breeds can be considerably stronger and larger than a person of average size. This is why most apartment properties with many families living close together use a list of restricted breeds to approve new tenants and their animals. From my experience, the following breeds are almost always on restricted breed lists of most apartment communities.

10. Dalmatian

Weight: 40-70 lbs.
Origin: Yugoslavia

Dalmatians are very protective dogs and can be aggressive towards humans. They are very active and need lots of exercise. They have very sensitive natures and an excellent memory. This bred is famed for their intelligence, indepedence, and survival instincts.

9. Boxer

Weight: 50-70 lbs.
Origin: Germany

Unlike their name suggest, these dogs are not typically aggressive by nature. They are bright, energetic and playful breed. Boxers have been known to be “headstrong”, which makes it a bit difficult to train them but with positive reinforcement techniques, Boxers often respond much better.

8. Presa Canario

Weight: 80-115 lbs.
Origin: Canary Islands

Originally bred to guard and fight with cattle, an attack by this dog has been described as hopeless for the victim. They are a guardian breed with man-stopping ability, incredible power and a complete lack of fear.

7. Chow Chow

Weight: 50-70 lbs.
Origin: China

These dogs can be aggressive if poorly bred. The Chow Chow may appear to be independent and aloof for much of the day but needs constant reinforcement.

6. Doberman Pinschers

Weight: 65-90 lbs.
Origin: Germany

Dobermans are great guard dogs for their alertness, intelligence and loyalty. They can be aggressive dogs when provoked. The typical pet Doberman attacks only if it believes that it, its property, or its family are in danger.

5. Alaskan Malamutes

Weight: 75-100 lbs.
Origin: Nordic

These dogs are very energetic and active. If they are bored, they can become destructive. That’s why this dog needs lots of exercise to be happy.

4. Huskies

Weight: 44-66 lbs.
Origin: Alaska

Very energetic and intelligent dogs. Not considered a good guard dog because of its personality characteristics and gentle temperament. A 2000 study of dog bites resulting in human fatalities in the U.S. found fifteen such fatalities (6% of the total) were caused by “husky-type” dogs between 1979 and 1997.

3. German Shepherds

Weight: 70-100 lbs.
Origin: Germany

These dogs are intelligent and very alert. They are highly used by local authorities such as the police K-9 unit. German shepherds are known to be fearless and confident dogs.

2. Rottweilers

Weight: 100-130 lbs.
Origin: Germany

Rottweilers are known to be very aggressive dogs because of their keen territorial instincts. That’s why they make great guard dogs.

1. Pit Bulls

Weight: 55-65 lbs.
Origin: United States

A pit bull is a fearless dog that will take on any opponent. They will lock their jaws onto the prey until it’s dead. Pit bulls have a reputation of mauling people to death and they are highly sought for dog fighting.

Dogs most often make wonderful pets, however in certain circumstances, any type of dog can be dangerous. Even friendly dogs, may cause harm in the wrong circumstance.

Not all apartment properties have breed restriction lists but this is not something that is commonly known. Your best bet is to contact an apartment locating company in your area to obtain a list these properties and their current availability.

German Shepherd Long Stock Coat

Dutch Shepherd dog Breed Profile And Information

The Dutch Shepherd closely resembles the German Shepherd Dog but there are some important differences in character and in conformation as well. It also resembles in some respects the Belgian Sheepdog, which is said to be the “foundation stock” from which the breed was developed. For some years the breed wavered on the point of extinction but was saved in 1898 when a Dutch Shepherd Club was formed.

In the Netherlands today, this breed is flourishing and is often the dog of choice for both police utility and family guardian and companion. They are considered to be among the most competent of herding dogs also, since their history is closely intertwined with that of the Belgian sheepdog, with a later infusion of German shepherd bloodlines.

Although they are not known as much outside the Netherlands, they are often used in Holland as Search dogs, Drug dogs and Police dogs besides being used still as herding dogs, which is their original purpose. In most respects one could compare their sense of duty and their temperament to that of the German Shepherd.

The Dutch breeders have consistently bred for inherited characteristics of protective instinct and the Dutch Shepherd in recent years has been more frequently used as a police dog and a “sniffing” dog for narcotics and bomb detector at the airports in many other countries as well.

The Dutch Shepherd can come in a variety of colors and coat texture. There are three coat textures. The smooth coat or “short coated” is flat lying, close and sleek, with longer hairs on the neck, the back of the thighs and the tail. The long coat or “rough coated” should be neither wavy nor curly and the hairs are longer all over.

The third type of coat is the “wire-haired”, in which the hairs are of a definite harsh character and the head should have eyebrows, a beard and whiskers. In all three coats the color of the Dutch shepherd is always a brindling, from a black to a steel blue or red, but always a brindle coloration. The Dutch Shepherd is a breed that has remained true to type through the centuries and closely resembles the Belgian Shepherd in many areas. The registry of the Dutch shepherd is F.C.I. (it has not yet been accepted into the American Kennel club.)

The Dutch Shepherd is a breed that endears itself quickly to its owners and many swear that they will never have another type of dog. In many respects their temperament is much like that of the other “shepherd” breeds, intelligent and inquisitive, highly motivated for play and with strong and stubborn personalities. A Dutch Shepherd owner needs to be somewhat of an “alpha” personality, as this is a dog that will test his boundaries and is considered to be a “thinking” dog, always interested and never fearful of his surroundings and strongly motivated for protection work.

Since the dog also carries a strong herding instinct it is certainly a dog that needs a fenced enclosure. This is a faithfully and loyal dog, often becoming a “one person” dog in its orientation. This is a breed that does not do well as a kennel dog, kept in a pen, without a job to do.

Saarloos Wolfdog

The Saarloos Wolfhound is one of the rare dog breeds that over time has been addressed as the:

•    Saarloos Wolfhound
•    Dutch Wolfdog
•    European Wolfdog

The Saarloos Wolfdog or Wolfhound was named after Dutch dog breeder Leendert Saarloos (1884-1969) who developed the breed. By the early 20th century Leendert Saarloos had become profoundly and adequately disillusioned with the direction that genetic breeding of the domestic dog had taken to take it upon himself to save Canis familiaris (domestic dog) from the inexorable and slippery decline of genetic degeneration.

Leendert Saarloos was of the opinion that centuries of selective breeding had in effect genetically weakened the domestic dog to the point that hereditary disease was rife in almost every breed. Furthermore he also strongly believed that the domestic dog had long since lost its true canine qualities as a result of such prolonged selective breeding. Thus he decided there was only one course of action left and that was to re-infuse the domestic dog genes from “the original source,” its ancestor Canis lupus, the wolf.

Creation of A Wolf Dog

In 1920 Leendert Saarloos embarked on his project of creating a new and genetically rejuvenated dog breed, a project that was to consume him for the rest of his life. Leendert began the creation of the European Wolfdog (as it was then known) by crossing a German Shepherd Dog called Gerard with a female wolf called Fleur. That pairing between GSD and Fleur the wolf produced a total of 20 wolf-dog hybrids over time. Leendert Saarloos then crossed those half-wolves back with their father the German Shepherd Dog Gerard producing a new stock of hybrids that were just quarter wolf.

Leendert felt comfortable that he had attained the genetic perfection and consolidation with the quarter-wolf litter and set about training his “new and improved canine.” Leendert had high expectations for his new dog breed after all the dogs supposedly came equipped with the innate and insightful intelligence of the Canadian Timber Wolf combined with the unparalleled smarts of the German Shepherd Dog which so happened to be one of the brightest dog breeds. Unfortunately he was to be sorely disappointed.

His quarter wolf-dog mix canines were extremely shy and wary of people something 12,000 years of domestication had apparently relieved the domestic dog of. Wild wolves are notoriously shy and wary of people and generally avoid them as much as possible. Furthermore his Saarloos Wolfhounds were little disposed to the usual methods of training and overall made for lousy work dogs. The Wolfdogs were lousy guard dogs because they just plain refused to attack and made for equally bad watchdogs because just like the wolf barking simply was not their thing.

In effect by injecting a fresh infusion of wolf genes into his Saarloos Wolfhound breed Leendert diluted those genetic properties that make the domestic dog such a comfortable fit with people. The Wolfdogs performed equally dismally at trial shows and in fcat the only thing they appeared to excel at was looking good!

Saarloos Wolfhound Had A Little Too Much Wolf Not Enough Dog

What it really boiled down to was that the Saarloos Wolfdog had inherited a tad too much of the wolf gene. Wolves are highly intelligent animals that are very adept at escaping confinement within manmade enclosures, something that the average domestic dog is not. It is in fact now believed that wild canids learn through insight whereas the domestic dog learns by rote and repetition. Yet people tend to think of dogs that do their bidding willingly and eagerly as intelligent and those that don’t as dumb. Many independent thinking dog breeds that are little predisposed to obeying human commands are commonly labeled as primitive breeds (suggesting an inferior intellect), but such animals like the wolf are more adept and skilled at insightful learning and assessing any given situation on their own. The Saarloos Wolfdog fell within this category.

Anyway despite his initial failure Leendert Saarloos continued refining his Wolfhound dog breed with no real success to show over the years. Then in1963 Leendert decided to infuse a little more wolf blood into his dog breed by crossing his quarter-wolf mix dogs with a female Wolf called Fleur II. Unsurprisingly there was little improvement in the temperament and behavioral characteristics of that new stock of wolf dogs. In 1969 Leendert Saarloos passed away and within short thrift his Saarloos Wolfhound dog breed fell into rapid decline.

If it hadn’t been for the timely intervention of the Dutch Canine Authorities in 1975 it is quite likely that the Saarloos Wolfdog breed would have disappeared in a haze of free-for-all breeding frenzy that paid no heed to the quality of genetic standard that Leendert Saarloos had been so particular about!

Anyway Leendert’s wolf dog breed was saved from extinction in 1975 when it also came to be officially recognized by the Dutch Canine Authority as a true dog breed at which time it was designated the name Saarloos Wolfhound in honor of its deceased creator!

Saarloos Wolfdog Characteristics

Height:
24 – 29 1/2 inches (60 – 75 cm)

Weight: 80 -90 lbs (36 -41 kg)

This dog retains many wolf qualities and has a string pack instinct and needs plenty of space to sate it roaming appetite; thus the Saarloos Wolfhound is not cut out for apartment life. This breed of dog is inherently strong-willed and as mentioned previously does not adapt well to obedience training. It is imperative for the owner to establish the dominant alpha position. The Saarloos Wolfdog is not recommended for households with young children. This is breed does not make for an ideal watchdog because like the wolf it rarely barks at all. It is best suited to cold climates and does well living outdoors. The Saarloos dog requires plenty of exercise every day!

Life Expectancy And Health of Saarloos Wolfdog

The Saarloos Wolfhound has a lifespan of approximately 10 -12 years. Like the German Shepherd it is prone to hip dysplasia as well as spondylosis of the spine. Grooming requirements of this dog breed necessitate regular combing and brushing of its weather resistant coat and bathing should be on a as need basis in order not to deplete the natural oils in its skin

German Shepherd Colors Puppy

german shepherd colors puppy
How can you tell what coloring a German Shepherd puppy will have?

I am a bit of a GSD novice and I recently started looking at puppies. I ran into a woman selling them, it was her second litter, and when I saw the pups, they were all almost completely black. The parents are the “normal” black and tan. The sire is a golden yellow and black and the female is more of a sand and black. Only one of the puppies, a female, has lots of tan on her (well, compared to the rest of the pups…). Is there any way to tell weither the puppies will be the golden yellow, sandy, or black? The woman who owns the dogs says all german shepherd puppies are born black. I’m kinda confused.

I hope [Abe] isn’t responsible for a PD breeding programme. My original trainer, back in 1968, was a GREAT police dog trainer – but 3 years after he’d been promoted to head of Trentham Police Dog Centre he was asked to retire early so the kennel stock could be built up again. In-breeding on the RIGHT lines (if you can FIND any!) won’t cause HD. Out-crossing with the WRONG lines produces horrendous HD.

[b_carrot..]:
Few dog-breeders speak English well. So they confuse colour & pattern.
Pattern is (except for patterns not supposed to be in the GSD gene pool) caused by alleles of the Agouti Pattern gene series, of which GSDs have 3 possibilities:
• A^w = wolf sable
• a^t = tan-point
• a^ = self-colour.
Because of ignorant breeders & KCs who don’t check, there are also dogs registered as GSDs that possess:
• A^y = yellow sable – the marking seen on brownish Rough Collies and Pembroke Corgis.

The 2 colours allowed in GSDs are:
• Black – compulsory
• Tan – optional.

The gene pool also includes
• Liver – which is black degraded by the recessive pair b^ b^
• Blue – which is black degraded by the recessive pair d^ d^
• Isabella – which is black degraded by both b^ b^ & d^ d^
• Self-white – caused by 2 pairs of recessive alleles; one pair prevents black being deposited in hairs, the other prevents tan being deposited.
All you need know about those is that, the alleles being recessive, both parents can carry them without showing the effect, but if both do then about ¼ of the litter will show the banned “off-colour” effect and another ½ will be carriers.

There are modifiers which, at birth or during development, affect the pattern & the intensity of its tan.
Some reduce the area that black covers.
Some pale tan from military tan to gold, fawn, cream, or silvery-white.

There is a Spotting series which can block all pigment in spots – including in the skin, & any sense organ (eye, ear) completely surrounded by white. Such organ will probably be blind or deaf. A small chest spot, or an inconspicuous toe-spot that leaves the nail black, can be forgiven.

Looking at the parents & the grandparents gives an experienced fancier a pretty good idea of pattern & colour possibilities from a mating. An experienced fancier can predict within 48 hours of birth how MOST pups in the litter will end up.
•• Self-colour: Have NO tan at birth, not even under the tail root. Stay self-black (or self-blue, etc), although some have their legs turn gray as they age.
•• Tan-point: Born mostly black, but with tan on pasterns, cheeks, eyebrows, under the tail root. Gradually the tan spreads upwards. Most are close to their adult colour-distribution once the guard-hairs finish emerging (starts with a shiny black diamond about a third of the way down the tail at about 14 weeks). Most end up with proportionally as much black as a riding saddle covers on a horse, and are called saddle-backs. Some keep an extended saddle reaching close to the belly, and are called blanket-backs. A few keep the black crossing under the belly, and the little tan is just one tone – no shadings; they have black right up over their heels, and black pencil-lines on top of their toes; these dogs are bi-colours – the same pattern seen on Rottweilers.
• Wolf-sable: Born very similar to tan-points. However, once dry, traditional wolf-sables are a dark-honey colour except for a dark stripe over the spine. They become dark-honey-coloured almost all over within a week or so. When guard hairs emerge they have black tips but a pale base – lots of black per hair is called gray-sable, lots of pale is called gold-sable. Silver sable is sable that has undergone extreme colour-paling, and is undesirable.
One version of wolf-sable tricks breeders: Born self-black, turn bi-colour as guard hairs black almost to the base emerge; can LOOK bi-colour as adults, and are termed black-sables. Many owners wrongly call their extended-gray-sables black-sables.

german shepherd dry skin
German Shepherd with dry skin.?

What can i do for her?

It could be diet related so you could try changing her food or you can give her vitamin E. Or buy a shampoo with moisturizer. My German Shepherd has sensitive skin so I had to use a hypoallergenic soap free shampoo from DermCare and she hasnt had any issues since. You can get it at petsmart. They also have an oatmeal and aloe one from DermCare specifically for dry skin I would try. Good luck

Are some dog breeds really itchier than others?

Some breeds have a reputation for being itchy. These include West Highland White Terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds.

There are plenty of old wives’ tales relating to the care of our dogs. Is this just another one, or are some breeds really more itchy than others?

Breed Specific Skin Problems

There are definitely skin problems that occur in one breed much more than others. In many cases, there is a genetic component to these problems which explains why they’re more common in that particular breed, and not others.

One example is Epidermal Dysplasia in West Highland White Terriers. The term “dysplasia” means abnormal growth. This condition is caused by abnormal development of skin cells, which leads to inflammation and secondary infection with Malassezia yeast. The result is hair loss, and constant itching and scratching, which first appears at 12-18 months of age. This is a frustrating condition – treating the infection often resolves the itching but because of the underlying problem with the skin cells, it recurs as soon as medication is stopped. There are other specific skin diseases that occur in other breeds, and many of them are also suspected to be hereditary.

Are Allergies Hereditary?

Given that the majority of severe itching problems are caused by allergic reactions, it makes sense to look at whether or not some breeds are more allergic than others.

The most common allergy in dogs is flea bite allergy. Dogs with this problem can itch for several weeks if they’re bitten by just one flea, and they can bite and scratch themselves raw. As far as scientists can ascertain, there is no breed predilection for flea allergy.

The situation is similar to food allergy – there are no breeds that are particularly likely to develop this condition.

However, there is lots of evidence that atopy (or allergy to dusts and pollens) is more common in some breeds than others, and this does suggest that it may be hereditary. In fact, atopy occurs more frequently in some lines within those breeds.

Just to complicate things, some studies have suggested that atopic dogs are more likely to develop flea bite allergy. So, if that’s the case, can we then suggest there may in fact be a hereditary component to flea allergy dermatitis? Veterinarians aren’t sure about that one yet.

Managing Your Itchy Breed

Depending on the breed of dog you own, and the potentially hereditary skin condition you’re dealing with, your veterinarian may prescribe specific medication to alleviate his itch.

In the meantime, there are steps you can take to manage his condition.

1. Wash him in Comfy Dog Shampoo . It contains colloidal oatmeal which is well known for relieving itchy skin. It also contains herbal extracts to reduce inflammation and soothe red irritated skin. If you can follow up the shampoo with Fur Butter , your dog will have relief for longer.

2. Make sure he is never bitten by a flea. If he has an underlying atopy, he’s likely to also be more sensitive to fleas. This makes it even more important that you keep those little critters away. If you regularly apply Flea The Scene, he’ll not be bothered by fleas any more.

3. If he has a specific itchy spot, Itchin’ For Relief can help. It’s all natural ingredients relieve the itch, and its convenient nozzle makes sure you get the spray exactly where it’s needed.

4. If your dog has a skin problem that’s possibly hereditary, don’t breed from it. That’s easy to do with conditions that show up early in life. However, with skin allergies, they may not raise their ugly head until your dog is 2 or 3 years old. By this time, many purebred dogs have already had litters.

5. Make sure your dog is eating a no grain diet. Sometimes dogs are allergic to their food. Check out www.thehonestkitchen.com

If you take the time to correctly manage your dog with a hereditary skin disease, not only will he be more comfortable but you can reduce the incidence of that disease in the breed. That’s a win-win situation. http://www.happytailsspa.com/

German Shepherd Fur Color

german shepherd fur color
My German Shepherd has a “hot spot” on her leg. The fur is growing back a different color?

Her doctor gave her a round of antibiotic treatment about 3 weeks ago and she has been wearing a collar to keep her from licking the area. Her area is healing nicely, however the whole round area (the part she licked as well as the sore) of fur is growing back a rust color instead of tan? The doctor said she has hyperpigmentation, so why would that cause her fur to change it’s color completely? Is this permanat? Thanks! Just very puzzled!

Yes your vet is correct. Sometimes it is permanent & sometimes not but won’t loose it until probably next heavy shedding. Also the saliva will stain the fur reddish brown so not allowing any licking or chewing.

Dog Breeds: Hybrid Dogs, Mutts and Purebred Dogs

Ever noticed the sniffy hauteur with which purebred dog owners appraise mixed breed dogs? You can almost see them flinch as their condescending eye roves across the form of the objectionable mutt while they grudgingly concede that perhaps their refined canine specimen and that pollutant mutt do indeed belong to the same species! In fact you need only trawl various online dog forums to experience firsthand just how contentious the issue of mutt versus purebred really is. Yet much as purebred dog owners may put down the humble mutt or mixed breed dog the strange thing is:

Purebred Dogs Are Merely Strain-Refined Mutts!

Doberman Pinscher: The Doberman Pinscher dog breed was the brainchild of door-to-door tax collector Herr Louis Doberman. Whether Herr Doberman developed this dog breed as enforcer or protector has never been truly established but one aspect that is not in contention is the fact that his was an unenviable profession! It is well documented that since biblical times the tax collector has been much reviled; even today the tax collector is the subject of scorn and disgust. If you truly want to belabor the point, the next time you are at a social gathering, casually mention that you work for the IRS and watch the little-witnessed phenomenon of how so many can disappear so quickly!

However back to Herr Doberman and his dangerous profession; tired of being pushed about and quite possibly being set upon by irate tax payers, poor Herr Doberman came up with the novel yet economic solution of developing a dog breed that would be both enforcer and protector! The “ingredients” for his new dog breed included the following: Rottweiler; German Pinscher; Greyhound and the Manchester Terrier. Though some wishful fanciers contend that the German Shepherd dog was also involved in the genetic compilation of the Doberman Pinscher, this is highly unlikely since the development of the German Shepherd occurred a little later than that of the Doberman Pinscher.

The early form of the Doberman Pinscher dog was not the sleek lean machine that epitomizes the breed today, but it was a heavier-boned dog somewhat more similar in appearance to the Rottweiler dog breed. Subsequent tweaks by later breeders eventually resulted with the sleek contemporary dog that defines the modern Doberman Pinscher. The point of note here is that the Doberman Pinscher, a well-known dog breed that is officially recognized by countless of International Kennels such as the AKC, was a crossbreed developed from various other dog breeds before it attained the holy-grail status of purebred!

Verdict: The Doberman Pinscher, like all the other so-called purebred dogs is nothing more than a strain refined mutt. Sniff! What can I say…these pesky mongrels are everywhere, most of them disguising themselves as well-established purebreds!

Designer/Hybrid Dogs

Though the Labradoodle is widely accredited as the crossbreed dog that set the whole designer-dog movement rolling along at a good clip, the truth of the matter is that other well established crossbreeds already existed. One such crossbreed or so-called designer dog is the Cockerpoo (Cockapoo), a cross between the American Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Poodle. The Cockerpoo has been in existence since the 1960s (in contrast to the Labradoodle which was developed in the 1980s). The Cockerpoo is currently so well established in North America that there is a strong movement to consolidate a breeding standard.

These days “Oodles” or “Poos” (Poodle hybrids) are practically everywhere in North America for the simple reason they translate into mega bucks. Though the Labradoodle (perhaps the best known Poodle derivative) was developed with a utilitarian purpose in mind, most designer dogs have no other function than to propel a burgeoning and lucrative market for these hybrid dogs; as it so happens, backyard breeders very quickly recognized the enormous profits to be had from designer dogs.

To date the designer dog market is flourishing, strong evidence that people are quite willing to shell out mega bucks so as to differentiate themselves from the rest of the crowd. And perhaps you’ve noticed, nobody refers to these mutts as well…mutts, for the simple reason crossbreeds do not satisfy people’s sniff factor! (Sniff Factor defines the human tendency to snobbishness; in earlier times the upper classes were predisposed to strolling about with their noses pointed skywards as an expression of their obvious class superiority (as though reaching for air unpolluted by the masses!) Calling a mongrel a designer dog is certain to guarantee a far better price than if the animal were addressed as a crossbreed.

The unfortunate fallout of this whole designer dog issue, is that there’re now many more dogs in shelters and rescues, as well as dogs being euthanized, because of unethical breeders, who without regard to genetics, breed thousands of these dogs every year in a bid to capitalize on the public’s ignorance and insatiable appetite for “exclusive” or “limited” dogs.

So how did this designer dog brouhaha really begin?

Good Intentions Open Pandora’s Box

Sometime during the 1980s, Wally Conron, the breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia embarked on a quest to develop a non-allergenic guide dog for a visually impaired client whose husband happened to be allergic to common dog fur. Conron settled on the standard Poodle as the ideal cross with the already established Labradors in use at their center, for the simple fact that the Poodle,s as a highly trainable working dog with tightly curled coat, constituted a the best-fit match.

After two years of trials including 33 successive disappointment runs, Wally Conron hit pay dirt! A cross mating between one of their most prized Labradors and a Poodle specimen resulted in a litter of 3 non-allergenic puppies. Sultan the 1st ever Labradoodle destined for guide-dog greatness was introduced to his new owner amidst great fanfare. The bonding was a great success and Conron was confident that the remaining two puppies would quickly be snapped up; after all, the center at which he worked had a 6-month backlog of requests from people hoping to foster a dog. But he miscalculated; nobody it seemed wanted a dog that was associated with the dirty word crossbreed.

As eight weeks rolled by, the remaining two pups still hadn’t found homes and the critical-period window in which they needed to bond with a new owner and thus become successful guide dogs was closing fast. Out of sheer frustration Wally Conron decided to call his new dog breed the Labradoodle and thenceforth stopped referring to them as crossbreeds. That was the eureka moment he had been waiting for (evidence of the sniff factor in play again)!

Within weeks, requests for this new “miracle dog” inundated the center…the rest as the saying goes, was history! Other than the Labradoodle, few designer dogs have been developed for utilitarian purposes and in fact for the most part new breeds are introduced for purely cosmetic purposes. Having said that though, it would be remiss not to acknowledge the fact that some new dog breeds are currently being developed to address the all pervasive problem of genetic disease in the canine; especially in the more popular breeds.

Some other well-established crossbreeds are the Bull Boxer which is a cross between the Boxer and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The Bull Boxer is said to be a more affable dog, especially towards other pets, than the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and is also reputed to be less inclined to exhibit the immature behaviorisms characteristic of the Boxer. By and large though, the substantial prevalence of the designer-dog set is to be found firmly within the realm of Poodle mixes. Such Poodle mixes usually go by names, which if not exactly flattering, are to say the least, colorful:

1. Doxiepoo (Dachshund Poodle Mix)

2. Papipoo (Papillon Poodle Mix)

3. Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever Poodle Mix)

4. Jack-A-Poo (Jack Russell Terrier Poodle Mix)

5. Irish Doodle (Irish Setter Poodle Mix) to name but a few.

Verdict: Sniff! These dogs may go under the guise of designer dog…but let’s be honest, they are no more than glorified mutts!

The Humble Yet Ubiquitous Mutt

So where does the lowly mutt fit in this picture of brave new doggy world; that is to say, other than bearing the brunt of the purebred afficionado’s scorn! Well as I have amply illustrated in the paragraphs above, all dog breeds are essentially mixed breeds even the purebreds. Purebred dogs are so entitled because over several generations they have been specifically bred for selective traits. But therein lies their Achilles’ heel or weakness. Due to such selective-trait breeding, purebred dogs have an inherently high prevalence of genetic disease.

A classic example illustrating some of the problems encountered in trait-selective breeding can be found in the history of the Dalmatian. Breeding for the sharply-defined spot trait unintentionally also led to selective breeding for an abnormal uric acid gene (case of gene linkage). The result was that the Dalmatian dog breed was dogged (no pun intended) with hereditary urine stone disease. In an attempt to rectify the problem yet retain the desired spot pattern, the Dalmatian was crossbred with various Pointer breeds (Sniff! Sniff! What did I tell you…all mutts the lot of them!).

Conversely the lack of trait-selective breeding and a diverse gene pool in the mutt makes such dogs so much healthier and more robust than their purebred counterparts! Thus unless you’re going to develop your own dog breed, if all you’re looking for in a dog is a pet, do yourself, your pocket as well as the millions of dogs on death row a favor and adopt a dog from a shelter! Trust me, they make excellent pets. (Shelters cannot house dogs forever and each year more than 7,000,000 cats and dogs are euthanized!)

Verdict: Hmmm…the lowly mutt. At last! A dog without pretensions!

Wings and Thighs how to cook them for my German Shepherd Dog puppy?

I would greatly appreciate if someone here could give me some input on how to cook wings and thighs for my German Shepherd Dog puppy. I was recently told today by a Nutro spokesperson that wings and thighs have glucosamine, which is important that German Shepherd Dogs receive. I want to cook for my puppy as she has just turned 5 months today. I am trying to get her more filled in by adding some more muscle to her great bone density. Please help me in this current situation that I have. I greatly appreciate everyone’s input. She is at 50lbs and I have no clue as to how much should I give her per day but more importantly how to cook it for her. Thank you everyone have a great weekend. = )

Easy – you don’t.

Don’t cook them, just give it to her raw. Glucosamine is contained inside the soft bone/bone content, and if you apply heat to bones, you’ll make them brittle and dangerous to eat.

We feed our dogs raw meaty bones all the time. We have a miniature pinscher (5 lbs) and a doberman pinscher. You just have to monitor them and make sure they are chewing their food and not just swallowing – yes, bones included.

Don’t let anyone tell you not to feed your dogs bones, even poultry bones. People who do raw feeding do it often. Our dogs has no problem chewing up raw turkey necks, beef knuckles, etc and it keeps their teeth squeaky clean, too.

Just don’t feed the raw stuff with the kibble stuff. Put a couple hours in between because they have different rates of digestion.

Health Problems in the German Shepherd Dog

As with most pedigree breeds, there are certain hereditary conditions that can be a problem in the German Shepherd as well as other health issues that are more prevalent in this breed which need to be considered if you are thinking acquiring a GSD.

If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy it is important to ensure that you only purchase a healthy dog from a reputable breeder and a good idea would be to contact the breed council who should be able to provide you with a list of such breeders. Most reputable breeders don’t need to advertise but if they do they tend not to use free papers or other general advertising media but will usually place their advert in a specialist dog magazine or paper. The Kennel Club will provide a list of breeders but this does not signify that they are reputable only that they register their puppies with the KC.

There are a number of common conditions seen in this breed, some of which have a better prognosis than others but all of which are expensive to treat – so insure your German Shepherd Dog as soon as you get it.

Inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia are becoming more common largely because of irresponsible breeding so you should look for a puppy whose parents are both hip scored and the lower the score the better – ideally less than ten. This is a distressing and painful condition for a GSD as well as the costs for treating being prohibitive if the animal is not insured. Elbow dysplasia is also a common hereditary condition.

Bloat or gastric torsion is a real emergency and a life threatening condition, which has become more common in deep chested dogs over the years. Experts are divided but good tips for reducing the risk are that it is best to feed 2 small meals rather than one large meal a day and to avoid feeding your GSD before strenuous exercise.

Anal furunculosis is a distressing auto immune condition which can be controlled with expensive drugs for a while but will inevitably progress as is the condition CDRM which is a degenerative disease which will ultimately lead to the loss of use of the dogs back legs and then bowel/urinary incontinence.

For whatever reason there seems to be an increasing number of GSD’s suffering from PI – pancreatic insufficiency, which presents as chronic watery diarrhoea and failure to thrive. This condition is treatable with expensive pancreatic enzymes and a low fat diet but the regime must be strictly adhered to.

Epilepsy is also more common these days and although it can be controlled by drugs, usually tolerance eventually occurs which will often result in the loss of control of the fits and the likelihood of brain damage as a result of prolonged uncontrolled fitting.

To protect your new puppy and in order to try to minimise long term or future health problems, it is vital that a high quality feeding regime is adopted from the start. German shepherds often have digestive problems so it is important to find a quality food that your dog likes and one that doesn’t upset the digestion. If in doubt ask your vet for advice or contact German Shepherd Rescue UK.

Something About Christmas

History of Some Christmas Traditions
Christians celebrate Christmas to observe the birth of Jesus Christ, which is an event and not a tradition. But many other
activities related to celebrating the Christmas season evolved from certain traditions, many of which are from other countries,
particularly from peoples in Europe.
Among common items used in Christmas decorations are the holly and the mistletoe. Both are used primarily in wreaths
and garlands. The Druids started the tradition of using the mistletoe as decorative items up to two hundred years before Christ. To
celebrate the winter season, the Druids would gather the plants and use them to decorate their homes. The Druids believed the
mistletoe would bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. They also believed that the mistletoe had a healing quality and could be
used for everything from healing wounds to increase fertility.
In Scandinavia, the mistletoe was seen as a plant of peace and harmony and was associated with Frigga, the goddess of
love. This association is probably what led to the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. In the Victorian period, the English also
would hang mistletoe from ceilings and in doorways during holidays. The habit developed that if someone was standing under the
mistletoe, someone else in the room would kiss that person. Such outright behavior was not generally seen in Victorian society.
The use of the mistletoe in Christmas celebrations was once banned by the church however because of its associations with
pagan traditions, and the use of holly was suggested as a substitute.
Poinsettias are another traditional decorative flower used at Christmas. It is native to Mexico and is named after Joel
Poinsett, who was the first U.S ambassador to Mexico and who brought the plants to America in 1828. Mexicans believe the plants
were a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem and that’s one reason they are associated with Christmas. There’s also the story that a young
boy was going to see the Nativity Play at a church but realized he didn’t have a gift for Baby Jesus. The boy gathered some green
branches, which others scoffed at. But as he placed them near the manger, a bright red poinsettia flower started to bloom on each
branch, which gave rise to their traditional use at Christmas.
Candy canes became a Christmas tradition not because their red and white stripes matched the colors of the season, but for
the most unusual reason of discipline. that’s because they were first used as treats that were give to German children to keep them
well-behaved for the duration of church sermons. Over time, the legend of candy canes at Christmas came to be associated with some
of the strongest symbols and beliefs of Christianity: the Father, Son and Holy Ghost known as the Trinity, the Blood of the Son of
God, Jesus as the embodiment of holiness, purity and without sin and the Son of God as the shepherd of man. The candy cane
represents these symbols respectively with its three stripes, its red and white color and its shape.
Sending greeting cards during Christmas and the holidays is as prevalent today as the custom of giving gifts. The tradition
of sending Christmas cards started in 1840 in Britain with the start of public postal delivery service of the ‘Penny Post.’ Then from
about 1860, large numbers of Christmas greeting cards started to be produced. The popularity of the cards increased in Britain when
they could be sent by the postal service for one half-penny, which was half the price to post a standard letter at the time, if they were
in an unsealed envelope. Religious pictures of Mary, Joseph , Baby Jesus, the angels, shepherds and Wise Men were traditionally
placed on Christmas cards. Some cards today include scenes from the Nativity, but pictures of Santa Claus, winter scenery, Christmas
trees, gift packages and others are also depicted on contemporary Christmas greeting cards.

german shepherd shelter
Thinking of rescuing an adult German Shepherd, but wondering…?

What are the chances of me finding a house broken, trained, between 1-4 years old male German Shepherd at a shelter? And should I be worried about health problems with shelter dogs? I want to adopt because I don’t want the work that comes with a puppy (I know all dogs require work, but I think you all know what I mean about puppies). Can someone give me advice on adopting a shelter Shepherd and answer my other questions too? Thanks

PS- I also have a female 1 year old Pomeranian, and want a companion for her. I’ve done my research, and obviously the two will be supervised when they play.

Does it have to be a shelter dog or can it be a rescue dog? German Shepherd rescue is so overwhelmed with adult dogs right now, and they have some really really wonderful dogs.

The chances of finding a mostly housebroken young adult male GSD are high. GSD’s are so smart that the chances are good that if it’s been with a family, it will know some basic commands. But, with GSD’s, training is an ongoing and daily thing.

The rescues won’t adopt to you if the main reason you want a dog is to be a companion for another animal. This raises serious red flags about your committment to work, exercise, and train a dog.

Rescued GSD’s can be wonderful dogs, if you have the time to put into them.

The good thing about rescue is that the dogs are usually privately fostered, giving the foster home the chance to see the quirks of the dogs, feel the personality of the dog, and to better match the dogs with your home. Since you have a small dog, they should be able to tell you how small dog friendly any given dog is along with how trained and willing to learn the dog is. There are some very stubborn GSD’s and some that live to please.

So You Want a German Shepherd Puppy, Huh?

So, you have finally decided to get a German Shepherd puppy. Could be a great choice if you did your homework ahead of time! German Shepherds are known for having many great qualities that one would look for in a dog. Some of these include strength, intelligence, loyalty and obedience.

Well, now that you have decided to purchase the German Shepherd puppy the question arises, where is the best place to purchase the puppy? Most German Shepherd owners would agree that the best place to purchase a new puppy would be from a registered breeder. This is by far the best way to get the puppy but there are other methods for getting a German Shepherd puppy too. (One way is to find a German Shepherd rescue center in your local area or to just go to the animal shelter and find a puppy that way).

Assuming that you’re going the breeder route, there are a few things to keep in mind. Do your research carefully and take your time. You do not want to rush this process. Now that you have found your specific German Shepherd Dog breeder, try and meet with that person as often as possible before purchasing the GSD puppy to make sure they are a legitimate breeding service. If you have any questions about the dog make sure to contact the breeder by phone or email, a good breeder will be expecting this.

Once you get to the kennel look around to see if its a clean, well kept place. Look at the German Shepherd puppy carefully to see it has been well feed and kept healthy. You also want to make sure that the puppy is playful, curious and clean. Make sure that the GSD puppy has received all of its shots and has been properly dewormed.

One thing you need to do is look into the parents of the German Shepherd puppy you are interested in  to make sure they have a healthy history and look for any sign of disease or other problems as this could be passed down to the puppy you are now looking at buying. Some of the illnesses that plague German Shepherds are bloat, canine degenerative myelopathy and von Willebrands disease. One of the key health issues to look for is hip and elbow dysplasia, among others.

Overall, it might be a lot of work to find a good German Shepherd puppy but taking the time to find the right dog for you and your family in the beginning makes all the difference in the world for both you and the dogs future happiness. You will not regret the work you put into finding the perfect German Shepherd puppy in the long run. Happy German Shepherd puppy hunting!

German Shepherd Crate Training

german shepherd crate training
if i get a new german shepherd puppy, it will be home all day by itself after summer ends.?

Should i crate train the puppy, or have it outside for the day. should i walk it in the morning, or the after noon? i have a large yard. i will be with the puppy a few hours every day.

Can I just ask why you plan to get a puppy right now if you know that you’re soon going to have very little time to interact with him/her?

Puppy Dog Crate Training For Obedience

For all pet dog lovers, puppy training and dog crate training is always close to the heart. They always treat them as if they are their human equals. It will be a joy to them to bring home a puppy or your favourite pet dogs. It always brings a lot of excitement and joy especially to the kids. Dog crate training is not always easy and you have to do it consistently otherwise it will not work the way you would like it. You may also need an air filled dog bed and a transport dog crates as well.

While for most people, pet dogs are an exciting addition to the household, just make sure not to rush when buying your favourite pet dogs or puppies. Dogs are living creatures and not just gifts that do not need any maintenance. Though it brings a lot of laughter and joy to the family dog crate training is not a walk in the park. Expect to put some effort and hard work if you want your puppy to be well behave and obedient.

Pet dogs are just like humans. And they too have own form temperament. Their temperament depends on their breed and birth place. So the first thing you need to understand is to get as much information about their breed and the type of personalities that those breeds has. This is what you need to properly train your pet puppy. Bulldogs, boxers, Rottweiler and German shepherds are guard dogs. Thus they are born with natural instincts to protect and love their human companions.

Pointer, Labradors and gun dogs are born and reared as hunting dogs so they are naturally energetic and almost always pump up. Border collies and bearded are herding animals and are bred and reared in the farmland. They are rather active and always curious about their surroundings. They not sit well as they always like to move around. Bringing these breeds of puppies to the cities may make them anxious and little bit scared or nervous of their new surroundings.

Training your pet dogs to be obedient needs time and effort. You also need a lot of patience and consistency on how you will train them. But do not worry too much as it often takes only a couple of weeks before it learns dog obedience. It will only take a few minutes per day to train them and that all it takes.

The first task to train your puppy is its obedience in simple commands like sit, come, heel, stay and fetch. These are very easy to follow and they should train in no time. A more bigger and older can move on to include more advance commands like pawing, rolling over and even playing dead or sleeping.

Anytime you want to do a dog crate training you will always need to train them too on an air filled dog bed and on a transport dog crates. Doing it when they still puppies would be easier than later when they bigger and older. But the most important thing is to be consistent.
