My German Shepherd has started to grow white hair all along on her back. Is this Normal?

It’s been a few months now and she just turned one in September. She is purebred; straight from the breeder. I am worried this might be a malnutrition problem, as for the most part, German Shepherds’ backs are black for their saddle pattern, unless it is a white shepherd. I am afraid it might get lighter and lighter. Is this normal for a German Shepherd?

Yes, its called ‘ticking’ I think. Its when a german shepard starts to get silver hair mixed in with the black hair mostly along the saddle and upper neck and chest. This is completely normal and expected in the breed.

Dog Facts – Is Your Dog One Of The Most Popular Breeds?

Dog Facts: Is Your Dog One Of The Most Popular Breeds?

They are man’s best friend, as they saycute and cuddly, intelligent and witty, lean and furry.

HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUND
—————————————————
There is a breed of dog for most any person out there.  Is your dog one of the most popular breeds?Belonging to this group are some of the intelligent dog breeds which includes the admired German shepherd dog, most famous for its police work and the Border collies, the most intelligent of all breeds. The dachshund, a hound in origin, might seem to be out of place in this group, as its background as a digger accustomed to chasing foxes and badgers underground would more logically make it a terrier. Like most terriers, this “king of terriers” has little time for other dogs, and if not properly supervised may engage in some street brawling.

Unfortunately, the sheer popularity of some of the sporting breeds, most notably cocker spaniels but also Labrador and golden retrievers, has led to a rise in health and behavioural problems. Two purebred dogs are sometimes deliberately crossed in hopes of creating a new breed such as the cockapoo, which is one part cocker spaniel, one part poodle. Saluki and pharaoh hounds, in particular, can trace their origins back to antiquity. Herding dogs actively round up cattle and sheep with frantic running, eye contact and aggressive barking unlike the livestock guardians that simply stand as a guard. Smaller dogs may be hurt by unintentionally rough children, especially those under the age of 3, but a well-trained smaller dog can be a great companion for gentler kids. Terrier breeds are diverse, and some of them are listed here:Airedale Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Border Terrier, Bull Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Glen of Imaal Terrier, Irish Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Skye Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Welsh Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier. Due to some unscrupulous breeders and unmindful owners, a few breeds within the terrier group have developed rather notorious reputations.

Many sporting dogs are still used as hunting companions today, although their gentle natures and high level of trainability have also earned them the reputation of being among the best family dogs. Consequently, these owners should also give them “work” that rewards their instincts. Some indiscriminate breeders have inflamed congenital problems by careless over-breeding, and have created unstable temperaments through simple neglect. Children and dogs make potentially blissful partners, but choosing a dog that actually likes to play with children is your best bet in orchestrating a match made in heaven. The American Kennel Club created this dog group to honour what is one of the oldest of dog professions:herding livestock.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE
—————————————————
Coat. Hairless. Typically, they sport solid grey, brown or black coats, composed of light to dark colour-banded hairs, called agouti, like grey wolves. The rose ears found in some bulldogs and pugs, a variation of a drop ear, is folded inward along the back edge, with the tip curving over and back to show the opening to the ear. Sixteen sharp premolars, including the carnassials, allow the dog to cut and slice flesh, while ten powerful, grinding molars mean the dog can chew the non-flesh parts of its diet-typically vegetables, other vegetation and grains. Button Ears. Called thermoregulation, this ability allows canids to thrive in all types of climates, from the subarctic to the Sahara. A small stopper pad, located higher up on the back of the leg, provides a better grip for walking or running on slick surfaces. But among domestic dogs, selective breeding has produced a number of different ear types, each with its own names, courtesy of dog breeders, fanciers and kennel clubs. But variations in certain sub-species of the wolf are thought to be responsible for the wide variety of coat patterns and colours found in domestic dogs today. Wolves have remarkably thick, two-layered coats to protect them from extreme weather.

german shepherd adoption
Does any one have any Huskies or German Shepherds for sale/adoption?

I live in bakersfield, ca and i’m looking for a husky or german shepherd available anywhere around bakersfield. So if anyone has one for sale or adoption please post here.
yeah sorry i just realized that.

This is the wrong place to ask a DOG question.
Rather than reposting it in the dog section:
1) call all your local rescue groups
2) talk to your local vets
3) talk to your local pet stores
4) search at Petfinder and Dogster
5) if you want a pure-breed, visit the AKC website and the Husky and GSD breed groups for California. You can google search for those groups or find them via the AKC website.

Training German Shepherd: Discover Why Its Best For Your Dog!

German Shepherd is a very enjoyable process. Their breed is perfect if you want either a pet or a service dog, or both. That’s why many people planning to buy or adopt a dog, go for this breed. But like any other dog breed, certain noticeable traits should be known by the prospective dog owner before bringing home one.

For starters, German shepherd pups are very excited. At a very young age, their athletic nature and energy immediately surface and because they grow-up really fast in size, you’d might be having a problem if you have kids or elderly at home. This is purely because of the breed’s size and active nature and does not have anything to do with aggression. However, this could be easily addressed through training German Shepherd.

Another thing to consider is that this type of breed is hard to leave alone. Their size could prove to be destructive if they are untrained and are left to their own devices.

That’s why socialization plays a very important role in a dog’s life. Dogs should be left to socialize with people and with other dogs to ensure that they do not develop any form of aggression towards humans and other dogs.

While these may discourage a potential owner, you should remember that the key to addressing and preventing these problems rely heavily on training German Shepherd. Through proper training, German shepherds would pick-up correct behaviour and certain tricks.

I personally train my dogs and have developed a number of tips and tricks through the many years of experience. Dog training is an investment but it doesn’t have to be expensive! Sometimes, the best dog training are the free ideas you learn and not pay for!

AKC Registered German Shepherd Breeders

Who hasn’t passed a pet store and noticed the cute, sad-eyed puppies behind the glass? What most don’t know is the history behind those puppies and the pet store itself. Unfortunately, pet stores are not the best place to purchase puppies. This article will explain the reasons why. Pet buyers shopping for purebred German Shepherd puppies must take care in where they buy their desired pet. Thorough research into German Shepherd breeders and other sellers must be done. Additionally, pet buyers must research the breed they are buying and be prepared to care for its specific needs.

The German Shepherd is a large sheep-herding dog breed. The breed’s history is recent. The first German Shepherd breeder, Max von Stephanitz, founded The German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany which classified the German Shepherd in 1899. The American Kennel Club (AKC) registered the breed in the herding group in 1911. Though German Shepherds come from one of many versions of German sheep-herding dogs, they perform many other functions today.

The German Shepherd dog has a large body and is wolfish in appearance. Stephanitz initially inbred the line to retain its lupine beauty, intelligence and utility. Unfortunately, inbreeding also caused genetic defects. German Shepherds are highly prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal disorders. It is recommended that any potential buyer ask for a warranty from the breeder that their dog has been evaluated and cleared for hip dysplasia.

There are many places where a buyer can acquire a purebred German Shepherd. These include breeders, brokers, the Internet, the newspaper (private owners), pet stores, shelters and rescue centers. Simply put, the best place to buy a purebred German Shepherd is from a certified, ethical German Shepherd breeder. These breeders have their own kennels and often work in tandem with rescue centers or house rescues within their own kennels. All other sellers of German Shepherds cannot provide a full history and put buyers at risk of purchasing dogs with health and behavioral problems as well an uncertain ancestry.

A bad German Shepherd breeder only breeds dogs for cold hard cash and nothing more. They see the puppies and the parents as merchandise, not as living creatures. The term puppy mill or backyard breeder is the name given to these illicit breeders. The females are bred each and every season leading to shorter life spans and ill health. They are confined to very small cages and have no socialization of any kind. The puppies are kept in the same kind of conditions, which can lead to physically and emotionally unhealthy litters. These are the kind of puppies found at pet stores.

The best advice is to find a reputable German Sherperd breeder that really cares about the puppies they produce. This kind of breeder will ask questions of potential buyers to ensure the well being of the puppy in it’s new home. They will have all the appropriate paperwork such as American Kennel Club registration and veterinarian health reports as well as plenty of care information to pass on to the new family.

German Shepherd Kills Coyote

german shepherd kills coyote
Pet lovers, will you boycott Chinese-made goods?

PETA has recently disclosed that China’s fur industry is practicing methods more horrific than we could imagine. While it’s been previously known that China makes fur coats from dogs and cats, the methods they use to kill them are indescribable, including boiling or skinning them alive!
I’m sorry if I’ve upset anyone, but it has to be told. One undercover worker told of a fur coat made from fourteen German Shepherd puppies. The labels often (untruthfully) indicate the the fur is “rabbit” (rather than housecat) or “coyote” (rather than dog.)
I hope everyone who reads this will join me in REFUSING to buy each and every China-made product! Thank you!
East Caost—”racist”, my @ss. I am asking people to take a stand against a government that ABUSES ANIMALS (not to mention human beings!)
East Coast—”racist”, my @ss. I am asking people to take a stand against a government that ABUSES ANIMALS (not to mention human beings!)

I absolutely agree with you gypsy_cat 345, it is very cruel what they are doing to the poor animals and anybody with any sort of human sense should boycott these goods.

To East Coast Assassin there is nothing racist about this. Just try to imagine the suffering these poor animal have to endure, imagine being skinned and boiled alive would you like that?! It’s important to raise awareness and stop encouraging the fur industry of making money out of such animal cruelty.

what would be a better breed for protecting my chickens?

ok right now were having a problem with are chickens getting killed by coons, coyotes, foxes. and i have killed a few with my shotgun but i want something that will be there when im not. so what i was thinking was about getting either a rotweiler or german shepherd. i dont really what a long haired dog cause i dont feel like shaving him in the summer and the long fur just is a burden. so if you just tell me what breed you think would be good or any other breeds you have had exprience with. and no “my pitbull, lab,or beagle stories” i know there not sheepdogs.

Actually, I would stay away from any dog species, especially hearding breeds. Your dog may end up killing the chickens himself, and once he gets one he wont stop. As crazy as it sounds I would get a llama. They are awesome at protecting their “herd”, whether it is other llama’s, sheep, or what have you. And they don’t eat chickens. Just a suggestion.

Which dog has the highest bite force in the world? It comes down to the larger domestic dogs.

German Shepherd Dandruff

german shepherd dandruff
Tip of my dog’s tail is all crusty… eww?

I have a German Shepherd dog. I was looking at the tip of his tail today. When i move all the fur to look at the skin it’s all crusty. I can move away dry flakes of skin; it looks like dandruff. Is that normal or should i take him to the vet?

That’s not normal you could take him to the vet but you might just want to keep a eye on it, give him a bath, and wash him with a shampoo that has a antifungal ingredient in it, I use selsam blue on mine when they get dry skin or dandruff type flaky skin, try to think where he has been laying and if he has gotten anything on his skin in the woods or anything, Watch it for a while and if it doesn’t get better take him to the vet. He has a thick coat too so the weather could be causing this, and if he has been around other animals he could have picked up something from them. Good Luck

anyone know how to get rid of dandruff on a german shepherd?

Fish oil can help, as well as a raw egg or two in the food. Make sure that if you’re feeding kibble, you’re feeding a no soy no wheat no corn brand.

Dandruff is usually in relation to dry skin, however, a dog can also produce more of it (and shed more) when they are stressed.

A good bath once a month or every other month in a quality oatmeal shampoo with a good cream conditioner can also help.

German Shepherd Skin Diseases

german shepherd skin diseases
My german shepherd has 2 bald spots next to his eye and on his snout. Is this a disease?

He’s six months old eats healthy – doesnt shed too much. The one near his eye is a clear white skin showing bald patch and the one on his snout is also almost clearly skin showing. Is this something i shouldn’t worry about? I have two pups – could the other one have been constantly biting his hair off from this part of his snout and eye? Has anyone else noticed this happenning?

could be mange. I wouldn’t delay, have your vet do some skin scrapings to determine if your pup has some extra critters living in his skin. Mange can spread quickly!

Discover The Top Three Health Problems Of The White German Shepherd Dog!

Keeping you dogs healthy is a very difficult task to the part of the owner as it requires proper attention and procedures to ensure the safety of the pet. Certain kinds of diseases and abnormalities can develop in pets, both due to human or genetic. However, prevention is always better than cure. Below are some list of the common health defects of white German shepherd dog and their adverse possible effects to pets.

Of all the health problems that can be encountered by pets are skin allergies. They are the most evident type of health defects. Allergies in pets are one of the most common causes of skin conditions. It can be difficult to control and are chronic in nature.

There are 3 main types of allergies in relation to skin conditions. It is possible for a pet to have a combination of all 3 allergy types: Food Allergy, Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), Atopy, or Allergic Inhaled Dermatitis. All of which can significantly weaken your pet.

When pets are exposed to excessive trainings, they are more likely to develop bone defects. One of which is Canine hip dysplasia or CHD. It is a skeletal problem, an abnormal development of the hip joint where the head of the femur does not fit snugly into the pelvic socket. It is characterized by a shallow acetabulum (the “cup” of the hip joint) and changes in the shape of the femoral head (the “ball” of the hip joint).

Likewise, other bone ailments can also develop which will also drastically weaken or worse, paralyze your pet. Others include Progressive posterior paresis and Panosteitis. They are conditions wherein there is a neural condition, a paralysis of one or both hind legs and skeletal problem of spontaneous lameness and pain, respectively.

German Shepherd Italy

Where can I find a Lupo Italiano?

I’ve owned several wolfdogs before, and recently I’ve been looking into Lupo Italiano – a mix between a German Shepherd and a Wolf. I can’t find much information on where to get one. I live in Texas, United States; are there any breeders around here?

I recall one site mentioning you can only own one in Italy, but I’m not sure if this is true. 8|
Thanks in advance!
Ah, this blows. According to http://dogbreeds.bulldoginformation.com/shepherd-dogs-wolfdogs-wolf-dog-hybrids.html, Lupo Italiano are only bred in Italy and not for sale; used mainly for resues and such.

They’re absolutely beautiful animals. -sigh-

First, check local laws to make sure it is legal to own a wolf dog. One issue is that no rabies vaccine is licensed for wolves or wolf hybrids so your pet will not, technically, be complying with state rabies laws.

Second, find a local rescue for these kinds of animals since there is no such thing as a “reputable” breeder for this hybrid.

Wolf-dogs can be great, but just because the past ones have turned out ok does not mean the next one will. The issue isn’t temperament but instincts. Your sweet, loving wolf-dog has much stronger instincts for the see-stalk-chase-take down-kill-eat instinct than any domestic dog and also has stronger instincts to exploit perceived weaknesses in a pack leader. Instincts are unalterable and preprogrammed into an organism, that is, you cannot change or prevent them by training. Instincts are triggered by environmental stimuli – a child running, falling, or crying, a cat running across the yard, the “alpha” laying or sitting in a submissive postion, etc – and the dog half comes with it’s own instincts that are triggered by similar stimuli, making it hard to predict if a near-identical situation will trigger a response.

A better option than a hybrid would be one of the breed that has recently incorporated wolf crosses but has been selectively bred enough generations to again be considered a domestic breed, legally be covered by vaccinations, and much more predictable than a first-generation hybrid. The Czech Wolf Dog and the Saarloos Wolfhond are the two that I have heard of, but I do not know if they exist in the US or in Texas.

Your best option may be a purebred German Shepherd or a primitive breed like one of the huskies, a Canaan Dog, or a Carolina Dog.

Good luck on your search.

. Slope parachuting, a sport that has attracted wide interest in countries such as France, Spain, Austria, Italy and Turkey is now being practiced in North Cyprus. The launching area in the vicinity of St. Hilarion Castle is at an altitude of 750 meters. Ozgur Goka?an happily says: ‘The best flying area in this part of the world is in North Cyprus.’He further explains; ‘We launch at a height of 750 m and land at sea level. Jumps with an altitude difference of this magnitude are very rarely found!’ tandem Paragliding is the international term for slope parachuting carried out in the company pf a professional pilot. Ozgur Göka?an is an experienced pilot who has skydived more than 3600 times with his tandem paragliding he started by building model aircrafts. Soon, he discovered the thrill of paragliding. Then, he took classes at Eski?ehir-?nönü, in Turkey, where he watched hang gliding flights. As of 1994, he started to professionally tandem paraglide; first in Fethiye, Turkey amd then in Queenstown, New Zealand. His favourite location, however, is still Kyrenia. ‘Can you imagine anything more exciting for a tourist than seeing the shores of Kyrenia from the sky for two hours? ‘North Cyprus offers ideal conditions for tandem paragliding. Sadly, however, members of staff of the tourism industry and the civil aviation sector are not adequately informed on paragliding or interested in it. That is why the overall demand for tandem paragliding is not so great’. Ozgur Gokasan mentions that the hill used as the launching area near St. Hilarion Castle was found in 1989 by a fortunate coincidence ‘We were very delighted when a shepherd told us some Germans had been paragliding in this area. Turning the hill into an ideal launching area, however, was left to

us. Although it was hard at times, we succeeded!’ ‘today, there is a ‘Western Flying Area’ and a ‘Nortyhern Flying Area’. Depending on the prevailing wing direction, we take off from different launching areas’ Mr. Gökasan says and continues to explain: ‘If our co-paragliders are beginners, we start by giving them a short briefing and then we take off, if the weather conditions are suitable.’ Even complete beginners can stay airborne for about two hours, flying in the updraft, accompanied by a professional paraglider. When the wind blows up the face of the Five Finger Mountains, it lifts the parachute and therefore the pilot and the passenger of the tandem. The warm wind in the summer creates a region of rising air directly above the slope which elevates the parachute as the wind follows the contours of the slope. That is why the parachutes are easily elevated to great heights and fly like an eagle. ‘Recently, we were elevated up to 4200 feet; about 1250m. Sometimes, we fly even higher!’ Ozgur Gokasan has an information desk at Kyrenia Yacht Harbour. ‘We have to be available for tourists. The Yacht Harbour in Kyrenia seems ideal to promote our flights!’ he says. North Cyprus Holidays His most frequent guests, he says, are foreigners. He adds that most of this guests are overwhelmed by the experience, that they want to repeat the flight and they encouraged others to try it as well. Furthermore, he indicates that not only tourists come to North Cyprus to fly, but also the ‘local neighbours’ from the Greek side.‘we provide our guests with complete security, because each of our passengers is accompanied by an axperienced and certified pilot!’ he concludes.

All German SHepherd Owners, How big were your Shepherds as Puppies and as adults? List favorite activities?

My first Shepherd was 60 lbs at 6 months and is now 92 lbs as an adult. My newest Shepherd is a big boy, weighing in at 70lbs at 6 months. Im waiting to see how big hes gonna be as an adult. Im guessing 100lbs+!!! He is extremely muscular and strong for his age/size. Stronger than my first Shepherd and he is a natural jumper, at 5 months he started to easily jump over my 3foot high kitchen gate.

My Shepherds’ favorite things to do is play with their tennis balls in the backyard or spend hours licking the peanut butter out of their Kongs. They also love swimming

Lets hear about your Shepherds size, weight and favorite activities.

Go Shepherds!!!

my GSD Kirby was 68 pounds at 6 months and now at 2 1/2 yrs he is 94 pounds. he is a german working line GSD.
his favorite thing is me! I call him my velcro-dog he never leaves my side and when I do have to go somewhere he sulks…lol he also likes his kong frisbee, going for walks, and his absolute favorite is water whether it is swimming, the sprinkler or the rain…lol when I take him to the lake he knows it and is like a super-ball attached to a leash he is so excited and bouncing around!

Does Your Dog Have a Fear of Thunder?

Fear of thunder and other loud noises is a common problem in dogs. No one really knows why some pets become afraid of noises and some don’t. Dogs can easily develop these terrible sound sensitivities which tend to get worse the older the dog gets.

Left untreated the fear of loud noises can easily turn into a phobia (an excessive, persistent and irrational fear response to stimuli). The good news is that these fear-related problems can be successfully resolved with the right training and lots of patience.

A small recent study has found that certain dog breeds are more prone to developing noise phobias than other breeds. Many of these dog breeds at risk include breeds such as: German Shepherds, Collies, Beagles, and Basset Hounds.

Please realize that more research needs to be done in the area of fear of thunder since this particular single study was pretty small overall. This study did have another interesting finding: that dogs suffering from separation anxiety were also more likely to have noise and thunderstorm phobias.

What are the typical signs of a noise phobia, such as a fear of thunder?

Individual pets may display their particular signs of noise phobias in various ways such as:
Panting, pacing, drooling, chewing, trembling or shaking, expressing anal glands, barking, urinating/defecating, trying to escape or hide.

Concerning thunder and thunderstorms, dogs may possibly be fearful of other storm-associated trigger events such as: lightning, loud rain, static in the air, a change in barometric pressure, smells associated with thunder storms, ionic changes, and many other things we are are not even aware of.

Another thing to consider is the owner’s own attitude during the storm. You should act as if absolutely nothing unusual is happening. If the actual owner is also nervous during storms their pets pick up on this and can have a stronger fearful reaction than if the owner were actually calm during the storm. This one thing alone can easily influence the severity of the dogs fear during the storm event.

How are thunder phobias treated?

First and foremost, remember to refrain from giving any kinds of rewards or punishments. This is probably the most important thing to follow through with if your dog has a fear of thunder. Petting or comforting a thunder phobic fearful pet during a storm is really positive reinforcement of an undesirable behavior. If you try to console the pet during the storm it may potentially signal the dog that the storm really is actually something he should really be afraid of – just the exact opposite of what you want the pet to really feel!

Don’t ignore your fearful dog either – just the fearful behavior. If your dog comes to you, let it share your company, but don’t baby her while she’s with you. Don’t punish the pet for showing fear but don’t reward it either. Doing either will probably only increase his current anxiety level.

What else can be done for a dog with a fear of thunder?

Three of the most used options are various medications, changing the dogs actual environment, and behavior modification therapies.

Medications: These can be given individually or in various combinations. If your pet has a problem with thunder storms please consult with your veterinarian for his medication suggestions and dosage recommendations. Your veterinarian will probably suggest you treat your dog with some kind of tranquilizer. Keep in mind, these medications need to be given hours before the storm is predicted to happen.

Alternative therapies, natural herbal mixtures, are often recommended such as Rescue Remedy. Another I have heard of used by an AKC judge is Peppermint Oil which can be purchased from any health food store. Put a drop or two of oil on the bottom of each foot, right on the individual pad a few hours before the storm is to happen. Like anything else, sometimes these work, sometimes they don’t on particular individual animals.

Change the dogs environment: Changing the dogs environment can hopefully reduce the volume level of the storms sound and help make the pet less aware of what is going on. A few things you can do are:

• turn on some soothing music or the TV to mask the storm noises until the storm has past,

• rub your dogs coat with a fabric softener dryer sheet to decrease the static in it’s coat,

• cover windows so the dog can’t see the lightning and other storm related activities,

• keep your dog away from glass doors and windows,

keep outside gates locked and closed, and

• don’t confine your dog to a small space such as a crate (the scared dog could seriously injure itself if it were to try to escape).

Behavior modification therapies: There are a lot of special techniques used to help change the dog’s overall response to the noise (in this case thunder). Counterconditioning is one way. Here the actual negative stimulus is associated with a positive event the pet enjoys. For example, the only time the dog gets his most favorite treat of all is just before a thunderstorm happens and during it.

Desensitization is another behavior modification method often used. In the case of thunder and noise phobias the dog is taught to be calm when the noise level is low, and then, over time, the noise level will be gradually increased. An example of this would be to get a storm CD and play it in your home to get the dog used to the sounds over a long period of time, gradually increasing the volume while keeping your dog calm. This is a very slow process overall to be effective so be patient – you probably won’t know it is working until someday you simply realize that your dog isn’t scared anymore.

Overall, it is important to be aware that fear of thunder and thunderstorms as well as other noise phobias are very common problems in dogs (and some cats). Medications, changing the pets environment and using various behavior modification therapy techniques are all helpful in reducing the dogs overall fear.

Talk with your veterinarian or a local animal behaviorist or trainer in your area if your dog shows signs of any kind of noise phobia. These pet professionals can help you develop a treatment plan for your own individual pet to help it overcome it’s Fear of thunder or at least to deal with it in a more comfortable fashion for you both.

My German Shepherd dog has a skin allergy. Would a change of diet help?

My beautiful GSD has been itching and scratching herself raw on her belly and hind legs. She has lost a lot of fur and the skin underneath is red. We have seen the vet but he was no help, he said it was an infection and the heat has made it worse. We give her Revolution for flea control, she’s had 2 courses of antibiotics, steroid injections, and medicated dog shampoo baths, but nothing has really helped. She may be allergic to something, and I want to change her diet, but don’t know what is best to feed her. I don’t have the time to home cook meals for her. We are in Australia. Any ideas???

Hey Chezza,
Our GS had to eat roo meat to get rid of his allergies. It turned out that he was allergic to beef and any preservatives. Kangaroo meat is high in protein and low in fat (about 2%). Kangaroo meat has a very high concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) when compared with other foods. CLA has been attributed with a wide range of health benefits including an anti cancer action and reducing body fats. Our dog became much healthier by having only this but it’s important to make sure he gets different bits eg bones, offal etc and not just mince.

DO NOT EVER cook meat for the dog… especially the bones.

Your dog may also be allergic to wheat or grains. So rice and dry food may not be good… but you’ll have to try combinations.

How Dogs Maneuver Their Tails as Signals

A dog tail position is a vital indicator of social standing and a dog’s mental well being. There are some variations, depending on the tail position of the dog. For example, a West Highland white terrier will bring its carrot-shaped tail higher than a golden retriever’s feathery tail and a greyhound’s relaxed tail position is lower.

Almost parallel, pointing away from the dog but not rigid is simply a sign that he wants attention. It means: “Something interesting might be happening.”

A horizontal tail that points away from the dog is part of a challenge when meeting a stranger or even an intruder. It means: “Let’s determine whose boss here.”

When a dog’s tail is in an upward position, between the horizontal and vertical position, this is a sign of dominance, or a dog that is declaring dominance. This means: “I’m the boss.”

A tail that is up and slightly curved over the back means: “I’m top dog.” This is an expression of a confidence. This dominant dog feels that he is in control.

A dog tail that’s held lower than the horizontal but a distance from the legs means: “I’m calm.” “Everything is okay.”

A dog tail that’s down, near hind legs is the posture of the dog. If his legs are left in a straight position and the tail brushes back and forth slightly, this means: “I’m under the weather” or “I’m sad.” If a dog’s legs are bent a little inward with a slight downward slope to the back, this means: “I’m feeling a little insecure,” this is very common when a dog is in an unknown situation.

A dog tail that’s tucked between his legs means: “I’m scared!” or “Please don’t hurt me!” This usually happens in the presence of a dominant dog or human, this can also mean, “I accept my humble role in the pack, and I’m not trying to confront you.

A tail with bristling hair: this is clearly a sign of aggression. It may adapt to any tail position. Therefore, this means: “I’m ready to fight if you are!” and with the dog tail slightly upward or over the back it means: “I’m not scared of you and will fight to prove
I’m the leader in this pack.”

A sharp bend in a dog tail (when held high) is a characteristic of a dog that looks like a wolf such as German shepherds. This means exactly the same as the tail bristling. It is the will lead to possible aggression.

A dog that has a broad tail wag means: “I like you.” This is usually displayed during play, when one dog seems to be aggressive to the other, jumping, growling, and barking. The wagging tail is a reassurance that this is all in fun. It also means “I’m happy” in many situations. A dog that has a slow tail wag, with tail at half-mast me during dog training, means: “I’m trying to comprehend. I want to know what you are insinuating, but I just don’t quite understand.” A dog that finally solves a problem, the speed and size of that his tail wags will noticeably increase.

german shepherd cross husky
Help with dogs first season?

We have an 8 month old British Inuit bitch (basically a german shepherd cross husky) and I have noticed a small amount of blood splats on the conservatory floor. Might be a silly question but only ever had boy dogs before, but is it possibly her season? Can we expect lots of blood, or will it just be spotting? Any help greatly appreciated!
Thank you – you are all so quick! We are getting her spayed, but were advised to let her have a season first.

generally you will get small amounts of blood from any dog type, generally brush off on sofa’s and carpets but ive seen small puddles from my spaniels as well. At her age she is mature enough for her first season (anywhere from around 6 – 12 months) you can tell for sure by taking a closer look at her bits, if they are swollen with a small discharge of blood than its more than likely, but keep an eye on her to make sure thats where the blood is coming from. DO NOT TAKE HER OUT!! LOL you will be bombarded with several male dogs sniffing around her so best to keep her in,
she is at the height of her season as soon as the blood stops so do not take her out for at least 7 days after or you may have several german shepherd/husky/………………. in 9 weeks or so
good luck x

Origin Of The Domestic Dog

Ancient history. The earliest fossil carnivores that can be linked with some certainty to canids are the Eocene Miacids some 55 to 38 million years ago. From the miacids evolved the cat-like (Feloidea) and dog-like (Canoidea) carnivores.

Most important to the ancestry of the dog was the canoed line, leading from the coyote-sized Mesocyon of the Oligocene (38 to 24 million years ago) to the fox-like Leptocyon and the wolf-like Tomarctus that roamed North America some 10 million years ago. From the time of Tomarctus, dog-like carnivores have expanded throughout the world.

About Domestication. Human hunter-gatherers and wolves experienced several overlaps as both are social species, they shared habitat and hunted the same prey. There are four theories to explain possible routes for domestication of the dog:

1. Orphaned wolf-cubs: Studies have shown that some wolf pups taken at an early age and reared by humans are easily tamed and socialized.[2] Once these early adoptees started breeding amongst themselves, a new generation of tame “wolf-like” domestic animals would result which would over generations of time, become more dog-like.

2. The Promise of Food: Early wolves would, as scavengers, be attracted to the bones and refuse dumps of human campsites. Once there, they would recognise specific humans as “ours” and in protecting their range from strangers, would be useful to prevent surprise attack.

These early adoptees became tame wolves, dependent on humans for their source of food. The New Guinea “singing dogs” have such a function today, as do the pariah dogs of India. Dr. Raymond Coppinger of Hampshire College, Massachusetts, argues that such wolves over time would become less fearful of humans than most wild wolves, and this trait may have been heritable, making these wolves more likely to be domesticated.

Hypothetically, wolves separated into two populations – the village-oriented scavengers and the packs of hunters. The next steps have not been defined, but selective pressure must have been present to sustain the divergence of these populations.

3. As a beast of burden: North American Indians used dog-sized travois before adapting the horse for this purpose, and huskies are famous for pulling sleds for Inuit communities. It is very probable that the dog was the original beast of burden before the domestication of the horse or ox.

4. Dogs as a source of food and fur: Whilst Westerners have difficulty thinking of dogs (or wolves) as a source of meat, wolf fur is a highly prized commodity.

Archaeology has placed the earliest known domestication at potentially 10,000 BCE-12,000 BCE and with certainty at 7,000 BCE . Domestication of the wolf over time has produced a number of physical changes typical of all domesticated mammals.

These include: a reduction in overall size; changes in coat colouration and markings; a shorter jaw initially with crowding of the teeth and, later, with the shrinking in size of the teeth; a reduction in brain size and intelligence and thus in cranial capacity (particularly those areas relating to alertness and sensory processing, necessary in the wild); and the development of a pronounced stop, or vertical drop in front of the forehead (brachycephaly).

Behaviourally, the wagging of tails and barking are behaviours only found in wolf puppies, retained via neoteny throughout the dog’s life. Certain wolf-like behaviours, such as the regurgitation of partially digested food for the young, have also disappeared.

As an experiment in the domestication of wolves, the “farm fox” experiment of Russian scientist Dmitry Belyaev [5] attempted to reenact of how domestication may have occurred. Researchers working with selectively breeding wild silver foxes over thirty-five generations and forty years for the sole trait of friendliness to humans, created more dog-like animals.

The “domestic elite” foxes are much more friendly to humans and actually seek human attention, but they also show new physical traits that parallel the selection for tameness, even though the physical traits were not originally selected for. They include spotted or black-and-white coats, floppy ears, tails that curl over their backs, and earlier sexual maturity. It was reported “On average, the domestic foxes respond to sounds two days earlier and open their eyes one day earlier than their non-domesticated cousins.

More striking is that their socialization period has greatly increased. Instead of developing a fear response at 6 weeks of age, the domesticated foxes don’t show it until 9 weeks of age or later. The whimpering and tail wagging is a holdover from puppy hood, as are the foreshortened face and muzzle. Even the new coat colours can be explained by the altered timing of development. One researcher found that the migration of certain melanocytes (which determine colour) was delayed, resulting in a black and white ’star’ pattern.”

DNA Evidence. Prior to the use of DNA researchers were divided into two schools of thought: 1. most supposed that these early dogs were descendants of tamed wolves, which interbred and evolved into a domesticated species. 2. other scientists, whilst believing wolves were the chief contributor, suspected that jackals or coyotes contributed to the dog’s ancestry.

Carles Vila of UCLA,[1], who has conducted the most extensive study to date, has shown that DNA evidence has ruled out any ancestor canine species except the wolf. Vila’s team analyzed 162 different examples of wolf DNA from 27 populations in Europe, Asia, and North America. These results were compared with DNA from 140 individual dogs from 67 breeds gathered from around the world. Using blood or hair samples, DNA was extracted and genetic distance for mitochondrial DNA was estimated between individuals.

Based on this DNA evidence, most of the domesticated dogs were found to be members of one of four groups. The largest and most diverse group contains sequences found in the most ancient dog breeds, including the dingo of Australia, the New Guinea singing dog, and many modern breeds, like the collie and retriever.

Other groups such as the German shepherd showed a closer relation to wolf sequences than to those of the main dog group, suggesting that such breeds had been produced by crossing dogs with wild wolves. It is also possible that this is evidence that dogs may have been domesticated from wolves on different occasions and at different places.

Vila is still uncertain whether domestication happened once – after which domesticated dogs bred with wolves from time to time – or whether it happened more than once.

The most puzzling fact of the DNA evidence is that the variability in molecular distance between dogs and wolves seems greater than the 10-20,000 years assigned to domestication.

Based upon the molecular clock studies conducted, it would seem that dogs separated from the wolf lineage approximately 100,000 years ago. Although clear evidence for fossil dogs becomes obscure beyond about 14,000 years ago, there are fossils of wolf bones in association with early humans from well beyond 100,000 years ago.

Tamed wolves might have taken up with hunter-gatherers without changing in ways that the fossil record could clearly capture. These dogs-in-process would possibly have dallied with wolves as packs of humans and canines traveled out of Africa and around the world.

Since evidence of dogs is not found elsewhere before 14,000 years ago, it may be that the “Sahara pump” associated with the Glacial Maximum was responsible for the spread of the dogs out of Africa. Such a thesis is compatible with the spread of languages associated with the Nostratic hypothesis.
