Toy Dogs In Art Part III: Children And The Cavalier King Charles

The artist Sir Joshua Reynolds painted dogs into his portraits especially when he was painting children, which he did often. The most frequently seen dog was the King Charles spaniels. In one of his famous paintings, a portrait of ‘Maria Gideon and her brother’ in Viscount Cowdray’s collection, the dog was a rather large long-nosed version of the King Charles. The King Charles spaniel has one paw raised as if clearly ready for a game with the boy whom he looks as if he obviously adores in spite of the fact that boy is carrying a stick. The boy is probably about to throw the stick and the King Charles spaniel is waiting anxiously for this to occur.

In Sir Joshua Reynolds painting of the family of George, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, which is part of the collection of the Duke of Marlborough, Reynolds uses Cavaliers.

Although Sir Joshua Reynolds depicts the Cavaliers a lot in his paintings, he may have had a favorite dog that looked like a Shih Tzu. This dog appears in the portraits of ‘Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester’ in the collection of Windsor Castle, ‘Emelia Vansittart’, Mrs. Crewe, and in the portrait of Mrs. Abington as Miss Prue in Love for Love. Most portrait painters made a habit to have their painting studio well-equipped with lay figures, costumes, drapes and other accessories. The person actually being painted only posed for short periods of time. The actual physical details which included these other accessories were painted at the painter’s leisure without the model needing to be present. This little dog that appears to look like a Shih Tzu was in a good many of his portraits. One can assume this dog must have been his “pet,” which remained in the studio with him as did all the other accessories. The Shih Tzu just adores an audience and attention. He probably just loved being this painter’s pet and painting accessory while getting a lot of attention from the society beauties and children of his time.

Other dogs painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds were the pug, a toy poodle or perhaps a bichon. The dog was small, white and long-coated, and appeared in a great number of his paintings.

Other interesting toy dogs appear in many paintings which tell us a story of the important part that the toy dogs played in people’s social life. From allegory, down to fairly recent paintings of either the genre type of the family portrait, the dog and often toy dogs has appeared in his part of the family.

The families painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds had their spaniels and terriers. Diana had her greyhounds. The French had their poodles. We learn from these paintings that the toy dog and other dogs were regular companions of men, women and families and sit in very acceptable positions as members of the household.

There are many things written about dogs and toy dogs, but nothing can take the place of a “visual story,” a beautiful painting, to tell us just how important the toy dog has been to us as a companion all down through time. And….in the 16th century the paintings are proof that toy spaniels really did exist.

It is not a sudden fad or any surprise the pet and pet care businesses today are one of the most booming businesses of our time. Toy dogs and dogs in general have always held important positions in our lives and in our hearts.

One good example of a painting that tells us the story of how little dogs were quite comical and irresistibly loveable little clowns is the little dog in ‘Portrait of a Man and Woman’ by Jacob Jordaens in the National Gallery, of London. It was included by the artist but seems to not be really involved with the sitters in the painting, although the toy dog could have belonged to the couple. The toy dog sits at the man’s feet, looking out of the painting with the most delightful and comical expression. It could have been a Maltese or a bichon frise. The story this painting tells us for certain is that there was a little toy dog (of some sort) that at least one portrait painter found “irresistible.” These are characteristics of all toy dogs and part of what make them so popular to us today. You will not find this type of charm in a German Shepherd or a Beagle hound!

I saw a german shepherd / collie mix puppy and i wanted to hug it forever.

It’s because they’re not biting your arm off.

Here’s What To Do If Your Dog Displays Submissive Urination

Bhabani wrote to me with her question about her dog and
submissive urination:

She wrote: “I have a mixed-breed puppy (German shepherd/border
collie mix) which is 4 months old. It’s very friendly with
people but when it approaches people, it urinates all-over. The
same happens when I come home in the evening. It becomes very
excited and urinates on the carpet. Is that a submissive
behavior? How can I solve this problem?

-Bhabani

Dear Bhabani,

Just for peace of mind, have him checked by your veterinarian to
make sure the problem is strictly behavioral and isn’t medically
related. Once you have the results from the tests, you can start
from there.

If your dog is otherwise house-trained, it is more likely a
submissive behavior. You can help reduce this behavior by
increasing your dog’s confidence level.

Take the dog out more and socialize, socialize, socialize with
other humans.

Agility training is also a great start.

Don’t create as much excitement around the dog when he’s known
to exhibit the behavior. When you come home, ignore him until
he’s calm enough to greet. Is he kept in a crate while you’re
gone? This can help you by allowing you to come home and
immediately take the dog outside to potty. By staying in the
crate, he will be more at loathe to potty in it because dogs
have an inhibition to using the same area as a toilet and a den.

The same goes with guests. If a guest comes over, they should
ignore the dog and not fuss until he calms down. Do not correct
him for urinating. Correcting submissive urination will only
make the behavior worse

German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd dog is a well known dog that can either be black and tan or red and tan. There are a few other colors but these are either rare, such as the solid black color, or not allowed by show standards, such as white, liver or blue. They are large and solid dogs with a muscular appearance. They should have a dark nose, almond shaped eyes, a big bushy tail and ears that stand upright. There are three varieties of German Shepherd’s and these are the rough-coated, the long rough-coated and the long-haired. They can be as tall as 26 inches and weigh between 49 to 88 lbs. They should all have a black ‘mask’ around their muzzle and have black markings on their body such as a saddle mark.

History: A relatively new breed the German Shepherd can trace its history back to a man named Max Von Stephanitz, throughout Europe during the 1800’s attempts were being made to standardize breeds, and many attempts had failed. In 1899, Max Von Stephanitz bought a dog, which to him displayed the look and the characteristics he thought the breed should show. After buying the dog, he founded the ‘Society for the German Shepherd Dog’ and his dog, ‘Horand Von Grafrath’ was declared the first German Shepherd. Through careful breeding the dog we know today was created, and they can all be traced back to the original dog Horand Von Grafrath and his original offspring. They have been bred to be work dogs and make excellent guard dogs, they are well known for being police dogs, military dogs and they are also used for scent-work such as search and rescue, narcotic detection and explosives detection. They are also used as guide dogs.

Temperament: Despite their reputation for being aggressive dogs, the German Shepherd is actually a very loving dog. They are a confident dog that can be cheerful, faithful and extremely brave. They would do anything to protect their family, for this reason it’s important to train them well from a young age and to socialize them well, or they can take their protection instincts too far. They are highly intelligent dogs and are easily trained, however, if the dog thinks that he is the one in control then training can be an issue, they respond best to an owner who is calm and mild mannered and yet can still have an air of authority about them so that the dog knows who’s boss. Due to the fact they are one of the smartest dogs they have a high drive to be busy working or doing something so they need plenty of mental stimulation and exercise.

Health Issues: The German Shepherd, due to the fact that it was severely inbred at the beginning, is prone to quite a few health issues. These include hip and elbow dysplasia, spinal stenosis, ear infections, digestive problems including bloat, epilepsy, chronic eczema, blood disorders such as Willebrand’s, keratitis (and inflammation of the cornea), dwarfism and DM which is a neurological disease. Their average lifespan can vary between 7-13 years.

Grooming: The German shepherd is a regular shedder who also then sheds heavily again seasonally. For this reason they need to be brushed daily to remove the dead and loose hairs. They should only be bathed when it’s necessary as it can cause them skin problems and can affect their natural oils.

Living Conditions: Although they can appear inactive while indoors the German Shepherd needs plenty of exercise. They can live in an apartment as long as their owners can provide them enough walks and exercise. However, they are best suited to a large garden where they can run around and keep themselves amused. They do not take well to being kept in a kennel or a cage or to being shut in the house all day.

german shepherd jumping
my 10 month old german shepherd mix gets overly excited when greeting me and other people she likes?

After being away from my house for a few hours, my 10 month old shepherd mix rushes me and jumps up with ears flat whining and crying and rolling over. I have to quickly sit down beforte being knocked over but even then she tries to get to my face for kisses, all the while almost hysterical with joy, sometimes even pees. Does this mean I am stressing her out every time I leave her? There is always at least one other family member home with her so it is not as if she is alone when I am out?

This is a bad habit a lot of owners get into. Usually the dog isnt overly stressed when you leave, but they get so excited when you come home because its when you make a big fuss over them, and they like that.

When you sit down with her, you are basically rewarding her bad behaviour, and so she thinks its ok to go crazy when she sees you, cuz she knows she will get extra attention.

You need to correct this behaviour, so start out slowly by coming in quietly and ignoring her for awhile or telling her to sit until she calms down before petting her and giving her a treat. Shell eventually get the hang of it.

If that doesnt work, try putting her in a crate or outside until she calms down, so she doesnt knock you over or pee.

It will get worse with time if you down do anything, and im sure her over excitedness can be a bit too overwhelming for you sometimes!

One trick i use is if the dog starts jumping, just stay quiet with your hands at your side and just keep turning your back on her. This is a dog bahaviour, so she will know you are ignoring her and after awhile she will figure out if she is calm then you will pay attention to her. Just dont pay too much attention once she figures it out.

I know, it sounds difficult, but its really not! It just takes some time and persistence! Dogs are smart animals! They figure it out! Good luck! :)

Dog Training Techniques: A Way Out Of Your German Shepherd Problems

Training your dog simply means getting a friendly companion from a rather unruly and disobedient dog.  Dog training techniques help you keep him out of his own set of unacceptable behavior.  He needs to be trained accordingly.  His behavior is affected badly by lack of proper training methods.  Decide for yourself which works best for both of you.

It’s not your dog’s fault if he gets too aggressive.  Biting, jumping and barking uncontrollably are problems of aggression.  These tendencies require training from an early stage.  It will be harder to train him once he has grown from a pup to an adult.  Get every chance for you to bond together.  This opens the communication line between the two of you.  After some time, training has to start.

The best learning process called conditioning also works effectively for your dog.  A good result begets his repeated behavior.  A bad result makes him stop.  You can easily gain control and leadership by reward training method.  By this method, you either give or remove something good.  Until he does something right, nothing is given to him.  On the other hand, there is the danger of your losing your dog’s trust by the aversive method.  It’s your biggest mistake to injure him physically or mentally.

Keep your cool always.  Your dog is most likely to exhibit extreme behavior if he detects you getting angry, impatient or frustrated.  To avoid a behavior problem from becoming a learned behavior, check it as soon as possible.  You obviously need an immediate remedy, if your dog continues to become too aggressive and bites or growls at anyone.  He is showing signs of some types of behavior problems.  Professional help from a trainer may be sought if the problem persists.

Never hit, slap or pinch your dog.  He will always remember the pain of the punishment and that it comes from you.  He may not associate it with his earlier behavior.  He understands only that you are angry.  Try your best to stay objective about how you should treat him properly.

It is an ongoing and lengthy process for him to obey your commands.  Training should enable your dog to respond and comply with every command from you.  It is dependent on the dog, the methods you use, your skill and understanding.  It serves as the foundation to solve any of your problems.  But it doesn’t solve all of them.

german shepherd pneumonia
USA Medical Care is Sh**??????????

When I was a child I had a German-Jewish baby doctor who used to bring along his pug dog on house calls. My father was shepherded through pneumonia by a physician who called on him twice a day and at home.

I no longer recognize the American medical profession. Even New York City doctors are sh**. When I complained about symptoms from a dog bite, suspecting tetanus and/or rabies, the doctor was more concerned about appearing convivial and telling me about his son`s birthday than in doing a spinal tap.

Most American physicians are concerned with getting research grants. Curing people has become very low on the priority scale.

Not funny!

I come from the UK and am told regularly that USA has best medical care in the world, What they fail to tell us is if you don’t have Insurance or are very rich then your medical care is on Parr with third world countries. This is not a pop at the people of the USA just your politicians.

Do german shepherds like to stay outside or inside?

I was wondering if german shepherds would be more of an outside dog or an indoor dog. I might get one in the summer, would it be ok for it to sleep outside in the summer and spring. Also I live in Washington, and it doesn’t get that hot or cold here. Any advice? And when I bring it inside, will there be hair everywhere? Do you think brushing will help reduce some shedding?

I have a German Shepherd and he is an outside dog.
I think if you get one you can have it both inside and outside!
The advice i give you is take good care of it of coarse!
But if you want to reduce so much shedding give it baths, and brush its hair, and take it to get haircuts. And always brush it, because their fur can get really tangled!
But you can have it outside any time you want! And inside any time you want. I have my dog out in the yard, even if it is raining.
1 thing though when it is still young, which is still 1 years old. If it is raining or really cold then you must bring them inside!
But when it is older it can stay outside.
My dog just has a nice cozy house and when it is a little too cold we have a nice little jacket for him! :D

The German Shepherd Rises in Popularity

Every year, the American Kennel Club (AKC) puts out a list of the most popular dog breeds in America, and for the past nineteen years, the Labrador Retriever has taken the top spot, usually without too much competition. But in the last couple of years, the hardworking German Shepherd has steadily made its way up the list, becoming a serious contender for the number one spot. The AKC’s 2009 registration statistics, released in January of 2010, showed the German Shepherd moving up to the number two spot, bumping off the previous number two dog, the Yorkshire Terrier. Whether or not the German Shepherd will manage to wrangle that top rank from the golden Lab, remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that the famous police-dog breed has earned its rise in popularity. AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson commented that one reason for the growth of the German Shepherd’s popularity is the increased attention the breed has received from its “security efforts at home and abroad.” The German Shepherd is and has been for many decades, the world’s leading police and military dog, and it has been indispensable in rescue efforts during major disasters. Even with the high tech advancements in today’s security technology, the loyalty, strength, and intelligence of the German Shepherd continues to make the breed a valuable resource for police and security agencies. It is these same attributes of loyalty, intelligence, and strength that have made the German Shepherd so popular among dog owners around the country. German Shepherds are a fun loving dogs that make for caring family pets and faithful companions. Also, German Shepherds, especially when compared with more anxious breeds of pups, like shih tzus, are not too difficult to housebreak. As when housebreaking a puppy of any breed, German Shepherd owners are advised to take their dog outside on a regular basis. Every couple of hours is ideal. The point is to make sure that your pup always has access to the right place to go potty. Using a dog litter box or an indoor dog potty can work just as well if you don’t have a backyard or outdoor space for your German Shepherd to go. You will also want to make sure to provide your German Shepherd with plenty of opportunities to exercise and remain active. Remember that this is a large breed of dog, fond of physical activity and outdoor fun.

I’m getting a German Shepherd?

Okay so I have a dog, she’s a 4 year old german shepherd/ chow chow mix. We’ve had her since since she was a pup.

Now, my cousin’s neighbor is moving to some apartments that don’t allow dogs. The neighbors gave them a chihuahua and the german shepherd. They stuck with the chihuahua but gave the other dog back cause she was so sad. They’re not sure if they want her, and it’s highly possible that we might get her.

Is this a good idea? My dog can be rather jealous and she is oh-so spoiled. Would there be much conflict between Two Female Dogs?

My dog is 4 years old and the other dog is 2.

You could associate the dogs, let them get to know each other.
Make sure the “new” dog doesn’t get your dog’s toys or food and such.
Try to get them to play, but if fighting occurs, you could chain one away from the other.
I cant say if it’s a good/bad idea,
because you don’t really know what might happen.

Family Oriented Dog Breeds

Of all the dog breeds available to choose between, parents need to take all considerations into account when they are choosing a pet for their family needs.  Don’t just choose a pet based on what you want or let price or convienience be a determining factor for choosing the pet you get.  All breeds have their own traits and characteristics that are unique to their group; i.e. the herding group has instincts for chassing and gathering, and the hunting group has instincts to hunt for instance the bird dog has point and retrieve instincts.   Use the unlimited resources of the internet, books and don’t forget about your veterinarian to gather info so you can make a smart and decisful decision on which breed will fit your family lifestyle and needs best.  Below are a few breed suggestions I have compiled that I think make great pets for families.

  • Bulldog- Usually a great breed for the family in the North do to the heat can restrict play outdoors; they do well with all ages of children and other pets.  They love to be part of the family and enjoy all the attention they can get.
  • Beagle – Despite a Beagle’s hawl/bark, they are usually non-aggressive. They are great around people and other pets, but they don’t like being left alone.  Boredom can lead to behavior problems if left alone for too long.  They are very active and love to run off energy with the kids, but they are hunters, so running away can be a problem.
  • Cairn Terrier – They are great for families that prefer a smaller dog.  Cairns are about 10 inches tall and weigh about 13 pounds and are good with children and other pets.
  • German Shepherd – This dog is good with older children. They are playful and loyal dogs with considerable size and strength. Begin obedience training early because without training they can become quit a handful for you and small children.
  • Poodle – This breed comes in three sizes.  Standard,  Minature, and Toy.  Most people keep them groomed regularly to keep a neat appearance.  Research each size to determine which would suite you better.  Also popular is the designer breed; the Labradoodle.  Labradoodles are a mix of Poodle and Labrador Retriever.  They can be a great alternative to a Lab because children with allergies to pet dander usually can tollerate Labradooles do to them being considered a hypoallergenic breed.
  • Collie- Collies are the American icon thanks  to the dog “Lassie”.  This breed is very well rounded for the family.  They are intelligent and train eaisly.  They have to be part of the family, or they can get bordom habbits.  They make playful companions for the children.
  • Basset Hound – This breed is good with children of all ages. They are known for their gentleness and kind demenour.  They are in the hound group, so they can be noisy. Their long backs can be injured if too rambouncious or a child can accidently injure them.
  • Labrador Retriever – Labs are a very popular family dog due to it’s playful, energetic and easygoing demeanor. Generally this breed is non-aggressive, gets along with other family pets, and loves to play all day and swim as well.
  • Pug – This affectionate breed loves being part of the family. Outgoing and mischievous, they make playful companions for children.
  • Golden Retriever – Similar to the Lab in personality, Goldens are mild mannered and enjoy being around families and other people. These dogs are easy to train are gentle with children.  They do have a coat that needs attention from time to time.
  • Cocker Spaniel – This breed thinks and loves to be a lap dog.  They are sensitive and sweet and enjoy the attention of all who will pet them, especially children.  They are obedient when trained and friendly around people and other pets.  Regular grooming is needed to keep a healthy coat.

Allthough this list is not a full comprehensive list of which breed would be best for a family, your research may find other breeds of which you could include in your list to research and ask questions about.   There are houndreds of dog breeds and designer dog breeds to choose from.  This list just captures some of the popular breeds that are chosen to be part of the family.  Each dog is an individual and can be an exception to the general breed rules. With that in mind, here are a few breeds to be more cautious of around young children and toddlers.

  • Dominant and Willful Breeds – Rottweilers, Chow Chows, Coonhounds, Border Collies and Weimaraners all have personalities that make them more difficult to train and trust with a young child. These dogs may function better in homes with older children.
  • Toy Dog Breeds – Young children may play too roughly with the smaller breeds such as Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas and other breeds that are under 10 pounds.  These breeds can sustain leg injuries and other serious injury due to being steped on or fallen on.  Small breeds can also be more temperamental and “one owner” dogs which make them more apt to snap at children.
