german shepherd wanted
How can I convince my parents to get me a German Shepherd?

I really want a german shepherd. I have wanted a dog for over 3 years. We have 2 cats, but I know some dogs are raised with them, so finding one won’t be a problem. But how do I convince them that I’m ready?
We have an O.K size yard. Its big enough for a dog, and me and my mom like to go for walks.
Does anyone have a German Shepherd? tell me a little about him/her.
I wanna get a grown up german shepherd, not a puppy.

it ain’t gona happen ………………… lll

German Shepherd Names: Favorite Puppy Names for your Favorite Pup

Finding good German Shepherd puppy names is no easy task. When one considers that this breed has consistently ranked as one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, it’s no wonder that you as a lucky owner will want to find a name that fits like glove.

A couple of things you may have struggled with when coming up with a name, is whether to give your Shepherd a general dog name, meaning a good dog name that might be shared by other dogs, or a German dog name, meaning one that reflects this breeds country of origin.

Well have no fear, for this article will share with you puppy name suggestions that will cover both of these categories. Keeping in mind that the German Shepherd is such an intelligent, hard working breed, when coming up with these names we intentionally stayed clear of foo-foo dog names. You certainly won’t find any names like Sparky, or Puddles on this list!

In our first category we’ve picked a few general names that we felt might fit this breed. We hope you’ll agree.

General German Shepherd Names:

Apollo: Like the ancient Roman god, this dog has a presence of it’s own.

Duke: A stately name for the dog who rules your palace.

Majestic: A good name for a dog that is just that…

Rambo: For the Shepherd who thrives on adventure.

Tiara: A feminine, yet strong sounding female name.

Other general names…Avalanche, Freedom, Genghis, Harley, K-9, Max, Ninja, Rio, Saber, Sarge, Summer, Thunder, Tia

In this next category, we’ve listed German dog names and their meanings. Hopefully, by providing the meanings, it will make choosing the right name easier, and the name more special to you and your dog.

german shepherd snow
Australian shepherd vs. German shepherd

hi, im thirteen and am getting a dog. i love german shepherds and aussies but i cant choose wich one fits my lifestyle the best. it would have to be alone when i go to school. i am planing on putting alot of toys out for it to play with while im gone. but once i get home i will play with it, take it on walks, excersize it, and give it attention. this will be an outside dog since my grandparents are allergic. i have a large yard that the dog would live in with a built in dog run and shady places. i live in ks. so in the winter it usually stays aroundthe 20s-30s with the occasional snow. in the summer it depends but it is usually around the 80s-high 90s. (i have a little kids pool i can put out for it in the summer. i want my dog to be loyal to me and easy to train. i want it to be my best friend. could any one help me decide? and if neither of these breeds suits me can you please give me another breed that would?

I can’t give you an answer that you’ll like; I’m sorry.

You can’t think just about how the dog will be treated for the first few month, but rather how it will be treated over the next 10 years.

You are 13, how is your life going to change in High School? What about once you get a driver’s license? How about after high school? Who is going to be responsible for the dog once you move out?

A 13 year old should not own a dog. Their lives are in flux and far too hectic. Getting a dog is based on their entire family dynamic. And most importantly, your parents’ lifestyle, not yours.

To be honest, that the dog would live outside is not really acceptable. Dogs are fmily members, not lawn ornaments. You’ll be hard pressed to find any responsible breeder ( http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html ) or responsible rescue group that would adopt a dog to you simply to be dumped outside with 20 minutes of attention a day.

Wait until you move out and then reconsider.

German Shepherd Undercoat

german shepherd undercoat
does my half german shepherd have an undercoat?

hi my dog is half german shepherd half black lab. hes medium size and has a medium looking size coat. not that big. i was just wondering if my dog would be able to withstand the cold winter outside. right now its about -5 degrees. when i put my hand on him his fur is cold, but after a few seconds it has a bit of warmth. i still think that my dog is too cold cuz hes always shivering a bit any suggestions???

-5 degrees? Where the heck do you live? The weather service throws out a livestock advisory way before it ever gets that cold. If they are worried about cattle, who are meant to live outside in all conditions, don’t you think that your dog should not be in these conditions either?!
No dog should be outside for long periods in this temp., but especially a dog with such a short coat. Doesn’t matter if he has an undercoat, he’s COLD!!
Maybe you can bring him inside or at least into your garage or something. He definitely needs a good insulated dog house with some type of bedding. Blankets, straw. He is also burning calories like crazy trying to keep warm. You need to feed him a warm, higher calorie meal. Add some heated canned food or something for him. Also, with temps that cold you need to be concerned about frostbite in his extremities. He could easily have this in his paws, tail and ears. Take care of your pooch! Best of luck.

German Shepherd Characteristic

The German shepherd characteristic gives the impression of continuous vigilance, watchful to every sight and sound, faithfulness, dynamism and cautiousness, with nothing evading attention; fearless, but with decisive suspiciousness of strangers. The breed standard German shepherd is short haired with a clear undercoat. Though, the extended coated German Shepherd is an completely gorgeous dog to the eye and the common public has fallen in love with this dog. They make wonderful working dogs, are very calm with support work, are great with police work and make the best pets. When working, the German shepherd is alert and eager, adapting well to tasks or responsibilities. Lack of coolness is a serious defect in the character of a German shepherd. The structure of this breed was designed for competent locomotion, particularly at the run, so reduced movement is another serious fault.

The German Shepherd Dog possesses highly developed senses, mentally and temperamentally. He should be strongly distinctive and possess a high customary of intelligence. Three of the most outstanding traits are virtuousness, discernment and ability to reason. Most of the German Shepherds have proven their versatility in temperament type, stability and strength in nerves. They are proven producers of brilliant fitness, constantly lending this characteristic to their offspring, and have been entirely tested on all structural and nature aspects by the peak functioning exhibition jury to ensure that they are worthy representatives for the development of the variety. The principal distinction between the long coated German Shepherd and the short haired German Shepherd is the length of the coat. The long coated German Shepherd simply has longer hair. It is as simple as that. Their names define their natural characteristics.

Husky German Shepherd Mix

husky german shepherd mix
Any suggestions for a name on this male Husky/German Shepherd mix puppy?

We just recently got this cute husky/german shepherd mix male puppy a week ago and are still stumped on a name! Anyone have any good unconventional/not the average puppy name suggestions?
We are trying to give him a name that doesn’t sound like any common training commands i.e. sit, stay, come, shake, off etc….This little guy also has an older lab mix sister named Lily. below are two pictures that give a pretty good idea of what he looks like. He was shy the first day and has been warming up more each day that goes by, resulting in a little spunky puppy romping around the house!!!

Coda, Jake, Grafe, Luka

I have a german shepherd/husky male also who is 15 months old. He is very stubborn, but very smart. Learns quickly, and loves to run, run, run (husky trait). Loves the dog park and is very good with other dogs. Loves to play. He needs lots of exercise and needs to keep his mind active. Listens when he wants to, and loves to chase squirrels, rabbits and cats. Shy around people at first but warms up eventually. Just a few things I’ve learned from this mix. He’s a cutie.

How To Prevent A Dog Bite

Dog breeds in general have similar characteristics. Some dog breeds are more likely to kill than others and some breeds are more protective of their masters and physical surrounding than others. There has been a 20 year study to determine which dog breeds are more likely to actually kill human beings. This United States study was done for the years 1979 through 1998.

This study tracks 238 human deaths from dog attacks during a 20 year period. 24% of these attacks involved unrestrained dogs off their owners property. 58% of the deaths involved unrestrained dogs on their owners property. 17% involved restrained dogs on their owners property and less than 1% involved a restrained dog off the owners property.

Some of the conclusions of the study are not suprising. Yes, certain breeds are more likely to kill than others. Yes, deaths from dog attack are quite rare. Also it is sometimes difficult to determine the actual breed of a dog. Communities who try to ban specific dog breeds for public safety will find it difficult to define the parameters of what constitutes that breed.

Several factors interact with the dog to enhance the possibility of a human being attacked by a dog besides the breed of the dog. These factors include heredity, sex, early experience, socialization, training, health, reprodcutive status, quality of ownership and victum behavior. Additionally, this study did not look at intervening variable such as was the dog protecting his owner from serious harm or death or was the dog actually protecting himself from serious harm or death.

Male dogs are 6.2 times more likely to bite then female dogs. Sexually intact dogs, both male and female, are 2.6 more times likely to bite than neutered dogs and chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to bite then unchained dogs.

One suprising conclusion of several studies is the fact that many varieties of dogs have been involved in a fatal human attack for one reason or another. Topping the list of deaths by dog in a twenty year period is the Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix at 66 human deaths. The Rottweiler and Rottweiler mix was responsibe for 39 human deaths. The German Shepherd dog and mix were responsible for 17 human deaths. The Husky type dog was responsible for 15 human deaths as was the Malamute responsible for 12 human deaths. The Chow Chow was responsible for 8 deaths while the Doberman was responsible for 9 human deaths. The Saint Bernard was responsible for 7 human deaths and the Great Dane was also responsible for 7 deaths. The Akita killed 4 people, the Bulldog 2, the Mastiff 2, the Boxer 2 and believe it or not the Labrador Retriever was responsible for 1 death while Lab mixes were responsible for 4 deaths. The following dogs were responsible for killing one human each during these twenty years: The Bullmastiff, Cheasapeake Bay Retriever, West Highland Terrier, Japanese Hunting Dog, Newfoundland, Coonhound, Sheepdog, Rhodesian Ridgeback and cocker Spaniel.

The conclusion that I make from this study is that almost any dog of size can be dangerous, particularly to children. Dogs must be properly trained, supervised, and care must be taken when choosing a breed with the propensity to be aggressive. Most important, keep young children away from male, sexually intact, chained dogs.

German Shepherd Bad Habits

german shepherd bad habits
How do I Break my 2 yr. German Shepherd from chasing shadows, He will be spayed soon with hope this will help.

He has been to obedience and when not chasing shadows, minds very well. Not sure how to break this very bad habit?

Point 1:
The general term is neutering. Spaying is specific to females, castrating is specific to males.
And neutering has just one guaranteed effect. However, in SOME cases there are other benefits possible, and in some cases there are other consequences available. But the multitude of old wives’ tales (some of them STILL spouted by vets and their assistants) have almost no basis in truth.
To see the latest research on what benefits & consequences sometimes occur (or to learn what the 2 operations actually entail), and from that work out the best age to neuter your pooch, see http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Neutering_001198315291/
Neutering him will make no difference to his interest in shadows.

Point 2:
Although, as some others wrote, chasing shadows is not of itself a big deal, there are 2 aspects that can MAKE it a big deal.
The first aspect that those writers overlooked is the disruption – even damage – the chasing can cause in the house, possibly even damage to the dog.
The other is that all obsessions are bad signs, and you’ll need to decide whether his chasing is an obsession or just a puppyish play-thing. (GSDs are rarely mentally mature before 3 years old, although most are amenable & sane by 2 years old.)

If it is an obsession you will be unable to train your pooch out of it.
If it is merely play you need to distract his attention to some easier-to-manage play.

Rough Dog Play

The following is an article I wrote for APDT’s “The Chronicle of the Dog”.  It’s about a young, large breed dog who was playing very roughly, and turning aggressive,  with another dog in the household.  This is how we fixed it.  As an update, the two are playing great together and the larger, younger dog won’t even be outside without a toy in his mouth now.

At 9 weeks old, Ricky, a Shiloh Shepherd, came to live with two older German Shepherds.  The oldest being a 12 year old male, the other a 6 year old female, both altered.  When Ricky arrived, Fred, the male was very clear that there would be no playing between them.  However, the female, Lucy, was not so clear.  She was so happy to have a puppy to play with that she let Ricky wrestle & grab her all he wanted.  The owner didn’t see the wrestling as a problem and continued allowing the playing/wrestling because the breeder said that is what they do, all her dogs do it.

Forward 9 months…Ricky is now larger than both of his housemates.  He still shows Fred quite a bit of respect, but his relationship with Lucy has changed.  He loves to play, and he plays rough.  So rough in fact, that she is becoming afraid of him.  Unfortunately, Lucy tires more quickly than does Ricky.  And when she’d stop playing, his frustration would build to the point where he was attacking her.  At first the client was able to break it up with a verbal correction, but he began to ignore that after a few weeks.

Of course in trying to help the client and her dogs I asked that she prevent them from playing.  I didn’t want him to practice the behavior, especially since he was now ignoring the owner and going after Lucy pretty hard.  Lucy was becoming very nervous in the house now as well as outside where the attacks would happen.  Her entire demeanor was changing.  To my dismay, although the owner was very compliant in every other way, she did not make it a habit to keep them apart.  Her reason being, that they really enjoyed playing together, and he only attacked Lucy about 50% of the time.  The problem was, she couldn’t tell when he was going to attack her, or even when the playing was getting too rough and she should stop it before it got to “that point”.

Because Ricky would never display the behavior during our appointments I asked if she could video a play session.  Not only was it useful to see with my own eyes what was going on, but by being able to pause the tape & show the client the body language the dogs were showing, the client was more able to control & stop situations before they escalated.  After that, she said the tape really helped her to see what is going on, that it isn’t all one big blur any more.

From the tape it was obvious that Lucy was showing stress signals at the very beginning of play.   She wanted to interact with Ricky, but was apprehensive.   What we needed to do was help Lucy feel that it wasn’t just her defending herself against Ricky.  At the same time, Ricky needed to understand that if he picked a fight with Lucy, he was taking on a person as well.  Also, we needed to give them a way to interact together that didn’t include him putting his mouth around her neck and yanking her to the ground.

With this in mind, we taught Lucy the cue “close”, which means “come stand by me”.  Separately we taught Ricky “go away”, which is self explanatory.  We also taught him that the word “toy” means to pick up a toy.

The protocol went as follows:

The owner would walk outside with the dogs & immediately tell Ricky “toy”, while keeping Lucy with her.  As soon as Ricky picked up a toy she would release Lucy to play.  If Ricky dropped the toy she would tell Lucy “close”, which stopped all play.  If he tried to follow Lucy over to the owner she would tell him to “go away” & “get the toy”.

Ricky had been rehearsing the behavior for a few months when you count the time it started at a mild level.  I told the client not to get discouraged, and that it could take him a few weeks or more to understand that dropping the toy meant the play stopped, and the way to get Lucy back was to pick up the toy.  By telling her it would take longer than I thought it would, it helped the client be patient with the process.

Amazingly, two days later the client called me to say that he had it.  He would pick up a toy and toss it around in an obvious solicitation of play to Lucy.  It would take her a while sometimes to trust him enough to interact with him, but you could see that she really wanted to.  They would then run through the bushes, her chasing him.  Sometimes he would emerge from the bushes without the toy, in which case the owner would say “close”.  Ricky would then begin looking for a toy, any toy, all on his own and the game would start again.  If he couldn’t find a toy and Lucy wasn’t close to the client then he would default to an attack.

Getting the client to understand that just because he has two good days, it doesn’t mean Ricky has overcome his bad habit.  This is what drew the process out longer than it should have taken.

It has been a few months now and the progress report is excellent.  The past three weeks have been attack free.  They are playing very nicely together. Lucy is calmer than she’s ever been, even before Ricky came along.  I’ve told the client that the play still needs to be supervised and the exercises will need to be continued for at least twice as long as he practiced the bad behavior.  Hopefully things will continue on this track and this form of play will become a lifetime habit for Ricky.

Spleen Cancer in Dogs – What You Should Know

The spleen is an organ located below the stomach. It contains lots of blood vessels with circulating red blood cells, making it a storage for blood. It also supplies blood, and cleans up old red blood cells.

Dogs may develop masses in the spleen. These can be benign or malignant. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of malignant spleen tumor in dogs. This is an aggressive cancer that tends to spread to other internal organs. Once metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor.

Although this type of cancer can occur in any dog, it is common in middle aged to elderly dogs, especially large breeds like German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.

Canine spleen cancer symptoms

When the tumor ruptures, the spleen bleeds and internal hemorrhage occurs. Excessive blood loss may result in death. Symptoms of spleen cancer in dogs are:

  • shock
  • pale gums
  • cold body
  • weakness
  • abdominal distention
  • anemia

By the time the tumor is detected, it usually has become large and has metastasised to liver, lungs, brain and other organs.

Diagnosis of spleen tumor

Several tests can determine the existence of masses. The initial step involves a physical examination. A firm mass can be felt in the spleen area on palpation. Thereafter, radiographs of the abdomen are performed to determine if the mass is on the spleen and radiographs of the chest is for checking the spread of cancer. Abdominal ultrasound may detect cancer spread to liver and other organs. Blood tests are also carried out.

It may not be obvious before surgery whether the tumor is benign or malignant. If radiographs and ultrasound show spread of tumor to other organs, the tumor is malignant.

If no tumor spread is visible, the mass may or may not be benign. Where the tumor spread is too small to be seen, it may not be obvious if it is benign or malignant until the abdomen is opened.

Treatment for dog spleen tumor

For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog’s life span.

If the tumor is benign and the splenectomy is not carried out, there will be repeated hemorrhages that is potentially life threatening to the dog. Splenectomy gets rid of the associated problems and symptoms caused by benign tumor.

The German Shepherd Dog Breed Essential Health Information

The German Shepherd breed is an excellent choice for a canine companion. However, just like many other popular breeds, there are certain health problems that you need to be aware of. Here are a few of the most prevalent German Shepherd dog health issues to look out for:

Developmental bone and joint disease is a problem common to many large dog breeds, affecting the younger animals. If your dog is affected, he may show no symptoms at all, or he may demonstrate pain or lameness, and seem cautious about movement. Hip dysplasia may cause leg muscles to actually waste.

Many German Shepherds also suffer from Hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the cells of the interior lining of the blood vessels. This condition can affect the skin, heart, liver, and spleen, as well as other organs. If you dog has Hemangiosarcoma, he may display weakness, light-colored gums, a distended abdomen, or even physical collapse.

Another German Shepherd dog health problem is weakness in the hind legs. This can also include wobbliness or a lack of coordination in the affected limbs. Multiple factors can cause this, including bone or spinal degeneration or possibly a slipped disc in the dog’s back.

Another problem to look out for is a diseased thyroid gland which will cause either over or under-production of thyroid hormones in some dogs. If your dog is experiencing skin infections, lethargy, hair loss, or cold intolerance it could indicate a thyroid problem.

Keep a keen eye on the eyes of your German Shepherd, especially if you notice apparent squinting, excess tearing or discharge, redness, or rubbing of the eyes. You should also be alert for any growths over the eye, regardless of the color. A condition called Pannus, an inflammation of the dog’s cornea, could cause any of these problems and be detrimental to your dog’s optical health.

A bacterial infection of the skin, sometimes accompanied by puss, is known as Pyoderma and can be a problem in German Shepherds. It is unknown what causes this condition, but it may be due to an immune deficiency. Your dog may have this if he displays pimples or sores, hair loss, redness or other abnormal skin conditions. Some dogs also become lethargic, or lose their interest in food.

A first step to avoiding these German Shepherd dog health issues is to make sure that your dog does not come from a breeder where other dogs had these issues. Watch your dog carefully, and be sure to consult your Vet if your dog displays any symptoms, or behavior out of the ordinary.

Here is what people had to say about them:

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/89539.html

The first response .. saying they had a shy GSD, probably didnt socalize her puppy well enough. ALWAYS socalize a DOG and it wont be shy. So I wouldnt count her.

But yeah, thats all I could find. They seem really good though. You should try to go out to their Kennel and see what it looks like and stuff to make sure you like them.

Hope that helps!

EDIT: Someone mentioned Vom Haus Miller German Shepherds .. so you can check into that kennel too.

I am planning to get a new puppy my choice is rottweiler or German shepherd can any one suggest me which wi

German Shepherds are more family dogs. Rottweilers are more one master type dogs. I grew up with 2 German Shepherds (Duke and Dutchess) and they were wonderful dogs and protective of the family. In some areas, people can not own Rottweilers. I am sure though, that it is mostly how they are trained. Shepherds are easier to train. I’d opt with the shepherd, just my personal taste though!

Tips for Dog Grooming at Home

If you have a pet then you will be responsible for taking care of him, and one of the most important aspects of health & care is dog grooming. All grooming needs quality combs, brushes and clippers that can be found at all pet supplies stores.

If you take your pet to a professional dog grooming service center then it can sometimes be expensive. It is not something that cannot be done at home i.e., it is possible only if you have the time and the equipment. The first and the foremost thing is that you need to be extremely patient with your dog during the dog grooming session and don’t forget to reward him once it is over so that you don’t face any problems the next time around.

The second important thing is buying the right pet supplies to enable grooming at home. The different types of pet supplies that you will need for grooming includes:

· Bathing accessories: This will mostly include hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner and towels

· Clippers: This will consist of pet grooming tools like turbo clippers, clipper kits, combs, trimmers etc.

· Others: This can include an array of pet grooming tools like nail grinders, FUrminator de-shedding tools, Styptic powder, Matbreaker dematting tool, dematting combs, dematting rake, flea comb, area slicker brushes, undercoat rake, etc.

Dog grooming is important for all pets but more for dogs and cats with a lot of hair. Dogs like German Shepherds have double coat and experience a lot of hair fall and hence should be groomed regularly. Some of the important parts of the body that need to be cleaned and groomed include the skin and ears and it is a must to clip the nails for cats and dogs.

Cleaning the ears of dogs is an integral part of dog grooming because of the fact that they get a lot of infections through their ears. Dogs with droopy ears are highly susceptible to different types of ear problems and infections caused by ear mites, waxy ears, and fungus. You need to check the ears of your dog once every week and clean them as well. Another important part of dog grooming is clipping nails and this is mostly done for dogs, as their nails can grow unusually big. Although they will never hurt you with their nails but are quite capable of scratching you while playing. You need to clip nails once every 3 weeks.

Let us consider some other pet supplies you may need:

· Treats: some dogs don’t like having a bath or being clipped, sometimes it’s a good idea to have a treat to distract your dog.

· Dental toothpaste: this is an often-overlooked necessity when buying pet supplies. Dental problems in cats and dogs are one of the most expensive veterinarian costs during a pet’s life.

· Toys: a great hide bone or Kong toy is a great idea when buying pet supplies. Anything to distract a dog will always help, especially if they playful by nature.

The one thing that most pets hate and dogs even more is bathing. Except for the Retrievers almost all dogs hate taking a bath and cats will always shy away. But bathing is also an important part of dog grooming. Before you give your pet a nice bath, ensure that you have the necessary pet supplies like shampoo, conditioner etc.
