German Shepherd Cloudy Eyes

german shepherd cloudy eyes
My dogs eye is red, swollen and cloudy, please help.?

I noticed my dogs bottom eye lid droopy, red, swollen and cloudy. I took him to the vet but when we got there it cleared up. I had noticed it at 8am and couldnt get him in until 4. The vet said he may have been bit by a spider or stung by a bee. That was Monday. That night I notcied it looking swollen again, the doctor only gave me eye ointment for inside the eye and said to give him benadryl if I see it again. Tonight it looks worse then ever. I cannot get him to the er because it is very expensive, I left a message for his vet saying he needed to be seen first thing inthe morning. Has you ever noticed this with your dog and if so what did you do, did you find out the problem? Im not sure if there is anything I should do until tomorrow? Please help I am scared to death. Thank you.

Also what could this be signs of? He is a german shepherd mix, 61/2 years old.

While I am not sure what it is- I can tell you that your dog will be fine waiting until tomorrow morning to see the vet. The Benadryl should help in getting the swelling to go down, but this does not seem like an emergency. You’re already being totally responsible by calling ahead to your vet- I think the best advice would be to try to keep him from rubbing it, and just seeing what happens tomorrow at the vet. Last thing you want to do is mess with his eye and have it react even more.

Good luck!

  • ANDREW COHEN –”It is very important to consider what evolution and development at the level of the soul really means. It’s not something we’re accustomed to thinking about very deeply… There’s a tremendous amount of resistance within us to the very thing that we think we want. So it’s essential to knoyv this from the very beginning, because then we can be prepared to do battle with it.”
  • ANDREW COHEN –”Unless we areeach willing to make the effort to become clear about what our fundamental spiritual and philosophical position is, in relationship to what it means to be a conscious human being in an evolving universe, we’re going to have a difficult time keeping our boat moving in a straight line. We will find ourselves tossed all over the place, swept here and there by the fast-moving tides of exponential change… In the time we are living in, we need to find a moral, ethical, philosophical, and spiritual context that not only empowers us to embrace the fact of perpetual change, but compels us to consciously evolve.”
  • ANONYMOUS –”The real Lent is the puttingforthofaman’shand to quiet his own passions and to push them aside, that the higher voices may speak to him and the higher touches fall upon him. It is the making of emptiness about the soul, that the higher fullness mayfillit… There will be no fasting days, no Lent, in heaven. Something-A changes and therefore it cannot be permanent. On the other hand, if A is not permanent, then what changes? In this debate between the ‘permanence’  and ‘change’, Hinduism seems more inclined to grasp the first horn of the dilemma and Buddhism the second. It is Jainism that has the philosophical courage to grasp both horns fearlessly and simultaneously, and the philosophical skill no to be gored by either.”

While radicalism is fated by its nature to resort to violence and terror, the most potent weapon in the arsenal of the gradualist — the radical’s opposite — is dialogue… Only with the open space created by dialogue, whether conducted with our neighbours, with history, with nature or the cosmos, can human wholeness be sustained. The closed silence of the disengaged can only become the site of spiritual suicide.”
  • DAISAKU IKEDA –”We need to awaken to a common consciousness of all being inhabitants of Earth. This consciousness is not to be found in some distant place. It will not be found on a computer screen. It lies in our hearts, in our ability to share the pain of our fellow human beings. It is the spirit that says: “As long as you are suffering, whoever you are and whatever your suffering may be, I suffer also.” One thing is certain: That is that the power of belief, the power of thought, will move reality in the direction of what we believe and conceive of it. If you really believe you can do something, you can. That is a fact.”

German Shepherd Hip Dysplasia Treatment

german shepherd hip dysplasia treatment
What would you do if you found out your dog had hip dysplasia?

Well, as luck would have it, the German Shepherd that I pulled from the local shelter for rescue has hip dysplasia.

From what the vet assumes, this dog was probably showing signs from about 6 months of age. (He is now about 3 years old.) He also believes that this dog has been kennel keep with very little exercise his entire life. (His muscle tone is very poor.) Had this situation been addressed when he was young, the problem would not be so much of an issue now, according to the vet.

So, now to my question. If you found out your six month old puppy had hip dysplasia, what would you do? If you didn’t realize this until he was three, then what would you do?

What if you couldn’t afford for the treatment?

Tell me what you think?

How bad?
Not too?
Pain meds. Rimadyl works wonders.

Bad?
Euthanasia

Is Your Dog At Risk For Canine Hip Dysplasia?

Canine hip dysphasia (CHD) is a genetic disease that affects the hip bones in dogs. While pretty much any dog can get it, some dogs are predisposed to this condition and it is more common in larger breed dogs due to the greater weight on the joints of the hip. some breeds at risk for this disease include Dalmations, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers and Blood Hounds.

This disease affects the hips way ahead of the thighbone does not fit into the hip socket as it should. Wear of the cartilage and damage to the joint occurs causing swelling and pain. Canine hip dysphasia itself is not arthritis but it is the most common cause of hip arthritis.

This is a disease that is inherited from the dog’s parents. Therefore the only way to eradicate the disease is through good breeding practices and not letting dogs with CHD have puppies. this presents a challenge though is not all dogs show that they have this disease and in fact, dogs that show no sign of it may still possess the gene that passes it to their offspring.

Symptoms of canine hip dysplasia present themselves as your dog not being able to get up is easy. Perhaps he’s not as energetic or doesn’t want to run as much and has a hard time standing up after sitting or lying down for awhile. His back legs may look lame and when he runs he might use them both like a rabbit. CHD might cause your dog to be reluctant to go upstairs. And most dogs the symptoms don’t show up until middle age but some may show the disease when they are puppies.

There and no test to tell if a dog carries the gene for CHD but the presence of hip dysplasia can be tested through x-rays and physical exams. An x-ray can let you know how bad the condition has become and using future x-rays to monitor it will let you know If the treatment path you have chosen is working. there are actually two types of x-rays that are performed one gives you an idea of how severe arthritis says in the joint and the other will tell you how loose the hip joint itself is.

Canine hip dysphasia can be treated with surgical and nonsurgical methods. Nonsurgical methods include drugs to help relieve the pain and inflammation of the hip joint. These drugs, Rimadyl, Deramaxx and Ectogesic can be very effectivee and have helped many dogs live happy normal lives. In addition making sure your dog gets good exercise and physical therapy to work the hips and keeping your dog at a slim weight can help relieve symptoms.

Surgical treatments for CHD can also be effective. There are two methods of treatment for canine hip dysplasia one which treats hips which Re: show a lot of arthritis and another which tries to help prevent the progresssion of the arthritis.

One of the procedures- triple pelvic astronomy – is most effective before the joint becomes damaged with arthritis. This involves cuttingg the pelvis and then rotating hip sockets to get them to work better. One new type of surgery, pubic symphysiodesis, is still being studied but hopeful to be effective for very young dogs with canine hip dysphasia.

In some dogs a full hip replacement might be the way to go. This involves replacing both the ball in the socket to allow the dog to enjoy a full life with normal activity. This procedure is used mostly in larger dogs they can be very effective.

Another procedure which is called a femoral head ostectomy removes the top portion of the femur in order to stop a painful grinding at the hip joint. the femur then floats freely forming scar tissue which then acts as the joint. This procedure is recommended for smaller well muscled dogs.

Canine hip dysplasia is not easy to prevent and it’s hard to tell if your dog will become a victim of this. Your best bet is to make sure you buy from a reputable breeder and be sure that the parents of your dog are free from CHD. Make sure that puppies do not have undue stress placed on their hips and that your dog does not gain too much weight and these things can help delay the onset of his disease should your dog be prone to it.

My dog’s drinking ALOT of water?

We’ve noticed today our long haired german shepherd is drinking alot. The sun isn’t even out and it’s quite chilly here so I don’t understand! He isn’t panting much and hasn’t been excersised that much this afternoon because we’ve been out.

But he just won’t stop drinking! I know it may be alot more different for dogs and humans especially as he has a big coat but he is usually always panting and you can just tell when his hot + bothered. Could it be a stress thing or something?
My mum’s had to top up his water 3 times today (which is a big bucket-like bowl). She only usually has to top it up once and he only drinks half..

My GSD did the same thing and that was due to pyometria ( a disease of the uterus ) but yours is a boy! Frankly, excessive drinking is a sign of a body unbalance or something pathological and you would be best to seek a vets advice. Your dog cannot tell you what is wrong! Good luck …

Dog Potty Training Keeps Your German Shepherd From Mess

When can you start dog potty training?  Your dog starts learning at the very moment you first meet him as your puppy.  It is easiest for you to do the training while he is still a young puppy.  As he becomes older, he will least likely to mess in the home by undergoing puppy potty training.

It is best to remember staying totally consistent and calm at all times with your techniques.  Timing is your key to success.  After taking in food or water, puppies pee or poop out within 15 or 20 minutes.  For that moment, take him where you want him to be.

Feed him or give him water only when you can take him outside immediately.  Feeding at regular times should be established.  It does not work if other than his regular meal times, he is allowed to feed.  This feeding pattern helps to start his natural toilet pattern also.   Your puppy drinks more than usual in warm, hot or dry weather or climate.  Provide him access to fresh water and to his toilet area more frequently.

As soon as possible, establish good habits without expecting immediate results.  A toilet area must be decided for him.  You have to stay with him outside until he’s done, at least once every hour at the start of training.   Never leave him alone outside.  Your puppy must be able to distinguish an acceptable are especially if it is a home toilet area.  It should not resemble the flooring.

Never yell or punish him physically if he does pee or poop where you don’t want him to.  You must realize that it is not time to talk to him about it.  Just quietly clean it up and ignore him.

It is not always fun to do potty training, particularly the waiting for him to go.  As you are building a relationship while teaching him his first lessons, keep him with you as much as possible when you are both at home. Whether it means being at your side, in a confined area, in a crate or just nearby, be sure that you are not distracted from watching him every moment.  Be patient as you take time to consider how the world must be for him.

The fun of being outside ends abruptly if you take him back inside the house right away when he is done.  When he succeeds in your dog potty training, give him lots of praise.

Can someone with knowledge on dog behaviour/training please help me with this?

Last October, I had to have my 14 month old Border Collie X German Shepherd euthanised. It was gut wrenching for me, but we had tried 3 different training programs and lastly a consultation with a vet who was a behavioural specialist.
Basically my boy was neurologically damaged, his brain was wired the wrong way and he was nervous, hypervigilant, and obsessive compulsive.
The vet told us it was too dangerous to put him on drug treatment because that would remove his fear but turn him aggressive due to how his brain was wired. He also said that nobody would rehome such a dog. He just seemed so good natured and loving, but I know he was unhappy.
Anyway, basically I’m still feeling incredibly guilty, does it sound like we really did the right thing? I didn’t want him to live being scared, but I can’t help wondering if there was SOMETHING we could have done?
Sorry it’s so long.

Im sorry to hear bout your loss!! Having to put down a physically healthy dogs is one of the hardest things to do and I sympathise with you.
What u did was right and I support your decision. You did all the right things by taking him to a behaviourist and by trying to put him on medication.
Many people love to pull fingers and say that its not the dog , but an ignorant owner. The truth is that those people talk from an ignorant point of view and have never had to deal with a dog that is badly wired. If humans can be psychlogically unstable, why cant dogs?

As owners we always have to think about the quality of life of a dog and I have little doubt that a dog with those problems would not have lived a pleasant life.

Is it bad for my dog to sleep on hardwood floors?

My dog is large. He’s barely 100 lbs and does not own a bed. This is because of the high cost of good pet beds (some are just flat pillows that lose its cushion after just a week). I mean, to my parents, anything more than $20 for a dog accessory is too much…. (besides vet exam bills or shots). Is this bad for his body, particularly bones–ribs, arms, skull? He’s a medium “plush” haired German Shepherd so the cold-ness of the floor isn’t a problem. It’s just the fact that he’s still on a hard surface. I can’t even sleep on the floor because it would sore my bones.

PS: another question, anyone know any department stores that sell good beds for under $20? I need one that’s at least 36 inches long.

yes it is not good the dogs loose their hair from the ankles and knees if they sleep in hard bed . and the cold floor is not good for their bones.

How Big Dogs Have Gotten a Bad Name

Any dog can be considered dangerous. The breed and size of the dog doesn’t actually matter; all dogs have their own personality and traits, which, like us, are often subject to the nature/nurture debate. According to the records, however, there do seem to be some dog breeds that are more aggressive and attack more often than others. In the UK, the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 (amended 1997) prohibited owning four types of dogs – the type being a key defining factor – which are listed below:

Pit Bull Terrier – They are usually medium sized, and have a solid muscular build and a short coat. They have a broad flat skull and a wide deep muzzle. They are powerful and athletic and come in a wide range of solid and mixed colours. The head of this dog is unique and a key element of the breed type. It is large and broad but is proportionate to the size of its body. Originally bred for fighting and baiting, these dogs need consistent training, lots of exercise and stimulation in order to prevent them from becoming destructive and aggressive – a lack of which has given them a reputation for being dangerous.

Japanese Tosa – These massive dogs are athletic and agile. They have a large head with a broad skull and a long square muzzle. Originally bred for fighting, they have powerful jaws and a strong neck which has a dewlap. Their coats are rough, dense and short. They come in a variety of colours including solid red, yellow or black and also in brindle and multi-coloured. They are loyal and affectionate as well as calm and patient, and can make good family dogs as long as the owner is a dominant “pack leader” who can keep this large and powerful animal under control.

Dogo Argentino – These are also called Argentinean Mastiffs and are very muscular with strong jaws. They have a short sleek, thick, glossy coat which is always white. They are large dogs that were originally developed as pack dogs to hunt other animals and can be dominant or aggressive by nature. Despite this, lovers of the breed will describe them as loyal, intelligent and affectionate dogs which crave attention through play and masses of structured exercise.

Fila Brasileiro – Also called Brazilian Mastiffs, they are very large, powerful dogs with large bones and loose skin. Their coat is smooth and short. They are known to be distrustful of strangers and can show aggression toward other animals. As a pet they will remain fiercely loyal and protective, caring and even submissive towards their owners and immediate family.

The restrictions and prohibitions also apply to any mixed breed that is crossed with any of the above mentioned dogs. It is the physical and behavioural characteristics of the dog and not the actual breed name which is important, and which can lead to a misinterpretation by some owners. The reason these four breeds mentioned above were put on the dangerous dog list is because they were considered to have been bred specifically to be either fighting or hunting dogs, and thus have a certain element of “natural” aggression.

The legislation surrounding these types of dogs is complex, and involves a series of amendments including an Index of Exempted dogs: so in fact owning one of these particular types of dog may not be deemed illegal as long as it has been authorized and recorded by a court of law. What could also be confusing is the inclusion of the offence of any type or breed of dog under the original act which is “dangerously out of control” – drawing much-needed attention to the fact of the matter which is that it is not the dog which is dangerous, but rather the owner who puts the dog in a situation where there is potential for harm. Much more emphasis has recently been placed on dog owners to ensure their dogs are handled responsibly and restrained where appropriate. This shift has been welcomed by organisations such as the RSPCA who have been known to speak up against certain out-dated aspects of the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991). More important information on the laws surrounding prohibited dogs can be found by visiting defra’s website.

However outdated, and despite recent amendments and inclusions, the act does still have an astounding influence on our perception of large dogs in society in general. So much so, in fact, that the above prohibited breeds are routinely excluded from a UK pet insurance policy on the grounds of increased risk and having been deemed as dangerous by said legislation. This is the case in spite of any individual court ruling that a registered dog of the above types poses no general threat. It would be fair to suggest, therefore, that unless you have unlimited access to funds which would cover the cost of veterinary treatment, or even legal action against you if your dog were to bite someone, you should not even consider keeping any of these types of dog, registered or otherwise.

Two other breeds of dogs that have often been considered “dangerous” or intimidating are the Rottweiler and German Shepherd. This common misconception is often due more to the lack of appropriate training and respect given to dogs of this size than any specific breed characteristic.

Rottweiler – These are large muscular dogs that are used by Police forces all over the world. They are also used as border guards and guide dogs. The breed originated in Germany as war and herding dogs. They are black in colour with clearly defined tan or mahogany markings. They are a powerful breed and can be aggressive if not trained correctly. This said a “Rotty” – as they are sometimes affectionately referred to by their owners – can make a superb family pet, as the natural temperament of this beautiful dog is one of loyalty and calmness, along with courage and playfulness.

German Shepherd – Also a large dog that originated from Germany and was bred for herding sheep. They are often used by the police and customs agencies. They come in a variety of colours with the most common being tan and black and red and black. Again, with the correct training, these loving and protective dogs can make fantastic pets. They will enjoy playing energetic games, and their keen intelligence makes them fast learners who will respond well to training challenges.

The increasingly well-publicised problem with so-called dangerous dogs seems to be getting worse every year, if the mass media are to be believed. Research shows that the top five dogs reported for biting people are: Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Japanese Akitas and Huskies. The key point to emphasise here is that large dogs require an enormous commitment to training and discipline – not to mention a great deal of exercise, love and attention – in order for them to become the perfect canine companion of your dreams. To blame or punish a dog that has not been properly trained is like smacking a baby for wetting his nappy, which is exactly why the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991) has typically been surrounded by so much controversy.

If you are ever confronted by a dog you think could pose a danger to you there are a few things you can do to try to diffuse a potential situation. You should make no sudden movements and stand still with your hands in your pockets. Do not make eye contact and slowly back away, but do not run. It is unwise to turn your back on a dog of whose temperament you are unsure. This applies to all breeds of dog, not just the ones detailed above.

Today, with things such as the cost of medical treatment for your pets at its highest and still increasing, a smart move is to buy pet insurance. It is also a good idea to do some research into your chosen breed before purchasing a pet dog; if he falls into an excluded category when it comes to buying pet insurance you could run into financial difficulties in the future.

Pet insurance exists to give you peace of mind and the ability to take care of your four legged family members in case of a medical emergency or injury. A good dog insurance policy will also provide third party liability cover. This will cover you financially in the event that your dog does happen to injure someone or cause an accident – even a well-trained dog can be provoked into an uncharacteristic response if he feels threatened. You will find that for just a few pounds a month you will be able to provide the best medical treatment for your pets to ensure a long and happy life together.

Puppy Problems!!!?

I have a 10 weeks old German Shepherd pup. Gunner was purchased from a breeder…has a pedigree,insurance,2 year health guarentee and parents are OVC hip and elbow certified….CKC papers. I have noticed when I am walking him…he is a little timid around people….but eventually warms up to them…When he sees another dog he barks and grows continuously….tries to nip. He does this to our poodle mix, with her it is just playing but am not sure what it is with the other dogs?….could it be a fear stage he is going through?…mind the other dogs usually bark back, well the puppies do anyway. I can’t tell if it is play or aggressive as he plays like that with my smaller dog? Any Suggestions….He is also in obedience training

How to Treat Lick Granulomas in Dogs

Canine Acral Lick Dermatitis, more commonly known as Lick Granuloma, is one of the most frustrating skin problems there is. What often seems like a simple problem is in fact multifactorial, and therefore attempting to treat it with a single approach are usually doomed to failure. There is usually an underlying cause, plus a secondary bacterial infection, plus an obsessive compulsive behavioral cycle to deal with.

Lick granulomas are most common in large, active, attention seeking breeds such as Dobermans, Rottweilers, Labrador retrievers, German Shepherds and Irish Setters. It can however happen in any breed, at any age.

The wound (lesion) develops as a result of the repetitive licking action of the animal. Chronic trauma to the site results in follicular rupture and furunculosis. The lesion is usually single, oval and varies in size from 2-6cm. It is usually found over the carpal (wrist) or metacarpal areas, though can also occur on the back leg. The lesion usually manifests as a raised, firm, hairless nodule or plaque and may have an ulcerated surface.

Almost without exception, lick granulomas are infected. Bacteria from the mouth are seeded in the lesion by the constant licking, which leads to the infection and a perpetuation of the licking cycle. In the early stages at least, the infection is usually by Staphylococcus species.

Identifying the Underlying Cause

Once it has been established that the dog does indeed have a lick granuloma, and not a skin tumor for example (usually obvious by clinical signs, though biopsy is definitive) then the dog must be examined for the presence of other skin, orthopaedic and neurological disease. A full clinical history and physical examination is mandatory. The following approach would be considered a very thorough one; most vets will simply bandage the leg and try a long course of antibiotics, sometimes successfully, but in the interests of those that cannot be fixed by this approach (and many cannot) I shall describe the thorough approach.

Skin tests should include skin-scraping, hair plucking, fine needle aspirates and/or a punch biopsy from a non-ulcerated area. A bacteriology swab should also ideally be taken for culture and sensitivity, to enable optimal antibiotic selection.

Orthopaedic investigation should include survey radiographs (Xrays) of the area, comprising at least 2 views, to look for bony lesions. If the lick granuloma is over a joint, then synovial fluid may be sampled.

For neurological assessment, a thorough knowledge of the nerves innervating the skin is required, and electromyography has been used to identify specific neurological deficits (this is realistically outside the realms of most practitioners).

Treatment of Medical Conditions

Lick granulomas are part infection, part behavioral and part other causes. After screening for underlying disease as described above, the next step is getting rid of any bacterial infection.

Topical antibiotic creams are useless in these cases. They only draw attention to the lesion from the dogs perspective, and perpetuate the licking. Systemic (oral) antibiotics are required, and are needed for a minimum of 3 weeks (and often up to 3 months). The choice of antibiotic is best made following bacterial culture and sensitivity, first line drugs often selected include cefalexin, amoxicillin and clindamycin. If resistance to these is suspected or confirmed, then more expensive antibiotics such as enrofloxacin (Baytril) or marbofloxacin (Marbocyl) can be prescribed.

Treatment of a Behavioral Problem

Many different treatments have been tried in order to break the compulsive behavioral component of lick granulomas. These include:

Corticosteroids (prednisone, medrone)
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Surgical excision
Orgotein
Cobra venom
Radiation therapy
Electronic collars
Acupunctire
Cryotherapy
Laser treatment

However, no one therapy has been consistently shown to resolve the problem without recurrence. Recent work has suggested that a combination of drugs and behavioral modification is the best approach.

The only drug currently licensed for behavioral therapy in the dog is clomipramine (Clomicalm). The main side effect of this is sedation, and it cannot be given to animals with pre-existing liver or kidney dysfunction. Better drugs for this purpose are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), such as sertraline and fluoxetine. These SRIs have less side effects and can be used long term, but have a slow onset of action so when being trialed, must be given for a minimum of 4-6 weeks before any judgment is made as to efficacy.

Behavioral modification depends on the cause of the stress involved. For fear and anxiety related stress, avoid leaving the dog alone, leave the dog in a favored place (e.g. car) or vary the arrival and departure routine so that the dog does not realize its owner is going out.

For boredom related stress, increase the visual or auditory stimulation by providing new toys, leaving the radio or TV on etc.

For attention-seeking stress, ignore stereotypical behavior to avoid reinforcement, and do not punish the behavior as this may lead to anxiety and complicate matters.

To conclude, lick granulomas are a difficult disease to manage. However, if the veterinarians approach is logical, then appropriate investigation, together with antibiotic treatment, behavioral drugs and behavioral modification, can achieve a high degree of clinical resolution if not always a complete cure.

Is there anyone in Iowa that wants to breed there dog with my gorgeous female german shepherd? Shes about to go in heat again.

One question, Why do you want to breed your dog?

Where can I find a German Shepherd puppy for under $400?

I am looking for a male German Shepherd puppy for under $400. I am not looking to “show” him. I live in South Dakota and would be willing to travel to Minnesota, Iowa, or Nebraska in order to get him. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are looking for a GSD puppy under $400, your best bet would be to visit the animal shelter to get one, which would run roughly $100 for spay/neuter and shots.

You can also try craigslist and put a ‘wanted’ ad in the pet section for your area.

Common German Shepherd Health Problems

common german shepherd health problems
german shepherd???????????

what are the chances that my german shepherd will have hips problems and other common known problems? do all gsd have these problems and how much is health care and things i should know or worry about??/

◙◙ If you already have your pet, the chances are VERY high. See, dog-owners who ask questions here almost invariably have a rubbish dog bought from a puppy miller (whether directly or via a pet shop) or an ignorant BYB. Those so-called-”breeders” consider that paying for xrays of hips & elbows is a waste of money; and checking through pedigrees in case some of the names are known to produce problems is just a waste of time & effort (especially if they are poor readers, as many are!) – by the time ED or HD or epilepsy or juvenile night-blindness or panosteitis, whatever, affects their “product” the buyer will be too attached to it to attempt to sue the so-called-”breeder”. And no way do such “breeders” supply a printed & signed Guarantee that is WORTH a buyer having!
A high proportion of dogs obtained from rescue groups also originated with that sort of so-called-”breeder”. It is rare for a rescue group to know the background of anything they are caring for, so you simply have to take your chances, and take out a veterinary insurance policy – but at least a pup from a rescue group is cheap, often cheaper than you would pay for just the vaccinations & neutering that the rescue group had done before allowing you to have the pup.

◙◙ If you are sensibly asking ahead of time, it is unlikely that the pup you eventually choose will have any hip or elbow problems – certainly not before it is 12 years old. because (unless you get your pup from a rescue group) you will reject all so-called breeders of GSDs who DON’T:
• Automatically supply a printed & signed Guarantee with each pup, stating what compensation they will provide should any of the genetic “unthinkables” managed to sneak past their testing programme and investigation of the pedigrees.
• Supply a pedigree listing the hip & elbow status of the parents & grandparents – greatgrandparents & earlier should have hip status listed, but elbow certificates are relatively new in many countries, so older ancestors probably weren’t tested for that.

Believe that if something claimed isn’t printed on the pedigree then it exists only in the fertile imagination of the salesperson who wants to talk you out of your money and will later deny every lie.

It is 25 years since my kennel produced a pup that developed physical HD – and that was an unplanned-by-me litter sired by a pup who was allowed to run unsupervised with his on-heat dam because he was too small to reach her “target”, and anyway he was too young to be fertile. Yeah, right….

Ideally, the parents and grandparents of the litter you are considering will all possess a Breed Survey Classification (BS.Cl.1 or 2 in English, KKl.I or II in German). Just to be allowed to ENTER in a Breed Survey in most parts of the world the GSD must have:
- KC Registration as a GSD
- a show grading certificate of Good or Very Good
- a BH (a “street-safe” test from which CGC probably got its ideas)
- an AD (Endurance Dog, basically for gaiting 12 miles/20km)
- either HGH (herding + courage) or SchH (obedience + tracking + courage)
and during the survey it is measured in various ways, its teeth counted (and testicles checked on males), it is gaited & gun-tested & character-tested, and if it passes all those within the limits laid down in http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc a 2-page report is recorded giving every detail a breeder could think of asking plus giving advice for finding suitable mates.

GSDs with BS.Reports truly _ARE_ GSDs. And the progeny of 2 GSDs with BS.Reports will truly be GSDs with very few risks in the litter (apart from many of the pups being more intelligent than many people who think they’d like a GSD….).

To discuss GSDs, join some of the 300+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they want to talk about, and how active they are.

German Shepherd Breeders To Avoid

The German Shepherd dog has a relatively short history though it is a well-loved and well-worked dog today. The breed began in Germany in 1899 and was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1911. Briefly renamed the Alsatian Wolf Dog due to anti-German sentiment surrounding World War II, the German Shepherd regained popularity so much that over 48,000 German Shepherds were enlisted into the German army. The intelligent and hard-working breed can be trained in a variety of areas.

German Shepherd breeders may specialize in German Shepherds trained in a certain line of work or they may be able to refer buyers to specially trained Shepherd kennels. These dogs are commonly trained to be guides for the visually impaired, members of the police force and security for home and business owners. German Shepherds are one of the easiest breeds to train due to their inherent intelligence, desire to work, courage, physical and mental strength and loyalty. German Shepherd dogs excel in jobs that allow them to protect and serve. There is no better protector than a German Shepherd.

Purebred German Shepherds have specific characteristics. Max von Stephanitz inbred the first German Shepherds so that certain traits would be guaranteed in the line. The German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany sets the breed standard. It defines characteristics from body measurements to character to gait. German Shepherd breeders should be familiar with the breed standard as well as what health problems to expect and to have dogs evaluated for. For example, German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal disorders.

Good German Shepherd breeders will also have registration papers or some form of pedigree for each Shepherd they sell, preferably from the American Kennel Club. German Shepherd breeders will also provide medical records and offer a guarantee against the dog developing hip dysplasia at least within the first year. Good breeders have their own kennels, and dogs should receive daily socialization as well as being well fed and groomed. Unfortunately, there are many German Shepherd breeders who may attempt to sell Shepherds with false registration papers. They may also sell unhealthy German Shepherds. It is important to know how to avoid bad German shepherd breeders.

Sure-fire signs of bad German Shepherd breeders include the fact that they only sell puppies over the Internet, they have no physical kennel of their own or only broker puppies, they ask for a non-refundable down payment before the litter is born, they do not plan to keep one of the litter, They claim to have a kennel but will not allow a buyer to visit and they have many dogs for sale at one time. Bad breeders also cannot provide adequate registration or certification paperwork, cannot provide medical record information or refer you to only their” veterinarian, and they don’t ask the buyer questions about their household. They do not care where their puppies are going.

Good German Shepherd breeders have the opposite qualities of the above. Additionally, they are affiliated with other agencies and rescue centers that help promote and care for the breed. Most importantly, good breeders love the breed they raise!
