Beauceron Dog History

With origins that date back to the late 1500s, the Beauceron dog is an entirely French dog breed. The name Beauceron actually stems from the plains and region around Paris known as La Beauce. The Beauceron properly came into its own as a definitive breed in 1809 when concerted efforts were underway to separate the multitude of various French herder dogs. Eventually it was decided that the shorthaired dogs would be named after the Beauce region while the longhaired ones would be named for the Brie district.

Beauceron Dog Breed
The Beauceron dog is the largest of the French sheepdogs and its heyday as such was utilized as an all purpose farm dog with herding, protection and guarding duties. In 1893 the Beauceron was registered for the first time by the Societe Centrale Canine and by 1900 it was appearing in dog shows. In 1911 the first Beauceron breed club was formed but despite that this well-recognized French dog breed remained pretty unknown outside of France.

The Beauceron’s character and intelligence makes for the ideal police dog and during both world wars this dog breed was used by the French military as a messenger dog and was even employed to carry replacement ammunition belts strapped to its body. To this day the Beauceron still plays a useful role within the military, commonly being used to detect mines and explosives, a task at which it has proved to be particularly adept.

Beauceron Dog Temperament

The Beauceron is an exceptionally intelligent dog breed as befits an animal whose original purpose was to excel at multi-tasking. Beaucerons are very loyal, calm and courageous dogs that are little disposed to strangers or other animals which is unsurprising because one of their breed traits was to protect livestock and guard the farm. Overall the Beauceron is a relatively strong-willed breed that requires early socialization and a firm hand if it is not to become unruly. That said the Beauceron is invariably safe around its own family members and will go to great lengths to protect them. However they can become a little rowdy with kids and tend to want to herd them so it is wise to set boundaries.

Beauceron Dog Maintenance

The Beauceron dog is a very active animal with an extremely agile mind that needs a good dose of daily stimulus both physically and mentally. In the absence of sufficient daily stimulus the Beauceron dog has a tendency of becoming destructive because it is bored. Despite its work-dog heritage as a herder, the Beauceron is very much the family dog and it is unwise to relegate it to long periods of isolation in a kennel.

Beauceron Dog Appearance

Quite commonly the Beauceron dog is illustrated in photos with pointed or pricked up ears giving the dog an added aura of fierceness, but this is not the natural appearance of this dog breed. In fact with a growing distaste for cosmetic mutilations in dogs more and more people retain the Beauceron dog with its ears allowed to hang down in their natural state. In appearance the Beauceron dog has been likened to a cross between a German Shepherd and a Doberman Pinscher.

The body of the Beauceron dog is powerful yet athletic in appearance befitting an animal designed to herd and protect livestock. Typical of herding dogs the Beauceron does not hold its head high when moving but keeps it level with its back. The Beauceron sports a dense outer coat of medium length comprised of straight hair in conjunction with a dense undercoat the combined combination of which make for formidable weather-resistant protection. The usual color pattern of this dog breed is black-and-tan like that of the Doberman but rare harlequin form does exist too.

The Beauceron dog strangely enough possesses rear double dewclaws a throwback from more superstitious times that has persisted up until till today whereby any dog lacking this largely useless feature will be disqualified from competitions as they are now considered a breeding trademark.

I live in pennsylania and yesterday in our town a family dog attacked a member of its family a13 month old child and killed her this is a horrible thing which left me heartsick the news did not say what the breed of the dog was. People were going around saying it had to be a pit bull! well it wasnt it was a old english sheep dog. what may it snap nobody knows? But what really bother me was a vet on the news! he said that people could not understand a old english sheep dog doing this. BUT he said that he would of though a pit bull ,german shepherd, doberman or rottweiler,What the heck i cant believe this vet was pasting judgement like that on these breeds i believe any animal could snap and harm someone are kill them.no wonder with vets like him are dogs mention from him get bad raps, whats your view of this vets statement.?
instead of this vet saying it like he did !he could have said any animal could snap he didnt have to say breeds is all that im saying,

Dear, a vet is simply a doctor for animals — they go through classes and learn to do specific procedures – they get a passing grade or retake until they do pass and then they get a degree and sit and answer a slew of multiple choice questions and get a license… it doesn’t impart with it intelligence nor capability to know or comprehend breeds of dogs, understandings of temperament or a lot of things that people seem to want to add to it. If you go to a physician and believe they know everything and can do no wrong, you are in for some serious reality some day — same for a vet. They do a job they were trained to do and some do it or parts of it extremely well and others simply do it… This vet obviously has little or no real experience with dogs other than giving shots, doing surgery on Thursdays and selling dog supplies… Just like dogs and people, there are good ones and rather not good ones… you will know the difference when they open their mouths

add: There ARE some dogs more prone to attack than others, DOGS not specific to breed — most of the attacks that I have seen on people in the ER have been by mixed breeds — go figure. The only time I have been attacked by dogs have been mixed breeds – again, go figure — and NOT mixes of any of the breeds this vet mentioned but mixed Labs and unrecognizable little mutts. The dogs that are more likely to attack and bite are the UNSTABLE ones – ones bred without any knowledge or concern about stability of temperament – then they are place in situations they never should have been put in and poorly trained to be even more unstable… Have owned Dobermans for over five decades and NEVER had one even consider attacking me – go figure… but then they were stable dogs that were properly trained to be companions….

Surpising And Important Information About Dog Aggression

WHY ARE SOME DOGS MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN OTHERS?

There are some dog breeds that were actually bred to be aggressive using selective breeding practices. Some dog breeds were originally bred to be fighting dogs such as the Akita dog breed while others may have been bred to be fierce guard dogs. Dogs such as the German Shepherd or Doberman are breeds that are prone to loyalty and protectiveness. This instinct can be tapped into to train these dogs to become fierce watchdogs.

Every dog is unique regardless of his or her breed. You can meet a kind and gentle Rottweiler and you can also meet a mean and fierce Poodle. The way that a dog behaves does not only depend on bloodlines but just as much on how the dog was raised.

A dog can be conditioned to be fierce through abuse. Some of the training practices to train dogs to be guard dogs are actually quite abusive. A dog that is scared and fearing for its safety will naturally tend to attack. Attacking a dog physically will provoke it.

While it is true that starting off with a breed which is known to have a tendency towards aggression makes it more likely that a dog will be aggressive, there are also dogs that come from aggressive lineage but that have always been treated well and are good-natured.

DOG AGGRESSION AND CHILDREN

Many studies have been done on children being attacked by dogs. While the researchers may have set out wanting to know which breed of dog was the most responsible for attacks on children, what they have found is that while the breed of dog is not consistent in terms of attacks, what is consistent is the age of the children. Most studies have found that the majority of dog bites and vicious dog attacks occur against children between the ages of five and nine.

Dogs are pack animals with a strong social hierarchy. The one who feeds and gives instruction in a household is usually an adult. A pet dog will equate this behavior from this adult as similar to the behavior of the Alpha dog in the pack. Therefore a dog is less likely to attack his master.

Young children may be seen as peers that can be dominated so that the dog can get ahead in the hierarchy. A dog which shows domination tendencies towards children such as humping them should not be left unattended with children because signs of trying to dominate children could be a signal that this dog could become aggressive with this child.

A dog who humps adult visitors may be simply trying to show that in this house he or she is above the visitor in the hierarchy but he will not necessarily bite. Perhaps children under the age of five are not left unattended with dogs as often as children between the ages of five and nine and this may explain why there are more incidences with children over the age of five.

It has been found that three out of four dog attacks against children are by the family’s own pet. Something else which people may find equally shocking is that friendly lovable dogs like Golden Retrievers have as many incidences attacking children as other breeds. One conclusion that has been made from this is that the more popular a breed is, the more chances there are that dog bites will come from this breed purely because of the numbers.

FATAL DOG ATTACKS

While all dog breeds may become aggressive in certain circumstances, the number one dog breed for causing fatalities is the Pit Bull Terrier. The Rottweiler comes in second. The problem of fatal dog attacks increases every year as these two breeds have become more popular. For this reason it is important for governments to make decisions on the conditions in which these breeds are allowed to co-exist with humans.

Some cities and countries such as Denmark, Holland and Norway have banned Pit Bull Terriers completely. Others say that this does not address the problem of dog aggression because Pit Bull Terriers are not the only dogs attacking, maiming and killing children. One thing that is certain is that a solution needs to be found to prevent such horrifying and meaningless deaths. At present, how to deal with dog aggression is a widely debated topic all over the world.

Why do dogs get “snow nose” in the winter?

My White German Shepherds always get “snow nose” in the winter. But my Black German Shepherd does not. I know it is natural. And I know her nose will blacken come spring. But why does the nose change color in the first place? What biological purpose does the changing color serve. Or
maybe there is no purpose for it, but rather an environmental cause.

There is an enzyme that helps produce the black color that is dependent on temperature. It does not work well in lower temperatures — hence it doesn’t work in winter.

Not all dogs are effected by this — as you have seen in your two dogs. There are number of genes that modify how nose color is expressed. It’s not just one gene that says what the color of the nose will be. Your dog that gets snow nose has the gene for it, the dog whose nose stays black does not have that gene.

Read before answering,what does/will a german shepherd/pit bull mix puppy turn out to look like ?

I’m going to look at some german shepherd/pit bull mix puppies to be adopted out.I’m just curious what they make look like before I get there.I had nothing to do with the breeding of these dogs.I don’t condone crossing and mix breeding.But I do believe in adopting these puppies when otherwise they would be homeless.Please no smart a-s remarks.I can’t find anything on the web to see for myself first.If anyone can tell me where I can find something to see for myself before I drive out there.Thank you for all answers in advance.

How To Break Down The Different Dog Breed Types

Of the approximately four hundred breeds of dog in the world, there are only 146 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Divided into sub groups, these groups are:

· Terriers

· Hounds

· Herding

In the terrier group, some of the breeds of dog are American Staffordshire terrier, border terriers, bull terriers, fox terriers, and jack russell terriers. These breeds of dogs are usually competitive and determined. The fighting breeds, such as bull terriers and pit bulls, are assertive and fearless but they are trying to breed down their aggression. The vermin hunters such as jack Russel terriers are extremely fast.

In the non-sporting group, there is a huge diversity in origin, size and type of dogs. They bred many in the non-sporting groups to do specific jobs but because it is obsolete, they became companion dogs. The most popular are miniature and standard poodles. Some of the other dogs in the non-sporting group are chow chow, Dalmatian, American Eskimo, French bulldog, and Boston terrier.

The toy group consists of very small dogs that are wonderful companions. They are usually very affectionate pets and great for smaller homes and apartments. Some of the many dogs in the toy group are Boston terrier, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Chihuahua, Papillon, toy poodle and pug.

Dogs in the sporting group are alert and naturally active with remarkable instincts in the woods or water. Many sporting dogs still participate in field activities and hunting. These loyal, intelligent dogs require a lot of exercise. Some sporting dogs are the American water spaniel, Chesapeake Bay retriever, pointer, Irish water spaniel and Labrador retriever.

Working dogs do just that. They breed these dogs to do jobs such as water rescues, pulling dog sleds, avalanche rescue, smell out illegal drugs and guarding people or property. Saint Bernard dogs, Dobermans, boxers are just a few of many working dogs.

Dogs in the hound group are great hunters. Some use their intense sense of smell to trail their prey. Other hounds have tremendous stamina which shows when they run down their quarry. Some dogs in the hound group are beagles, black and tan coonhounds, American foxhound, and the bloodhound. Hounds have a very distinct howl that is not for everyone.

Dogs in the herding group have an uncanny ability to control sheep and other livestock by controlling their movements. Although most herding dogs are fabulous family pets, their herding instincts are still apparent when they try herding their owners, especially children. Along with herding, these dogs love playing, working, exercise, and easy to train. Herding dogs make fabulous companions and are quick at training exercises. Some herding dogs are the Australian cattle dog, Border collie, Belgian sheepdog, collie, Pembroke Welsh corgi, German shepherd and Shetland sheepdogs.

The advantage of getting a purebred dog is their predictable behavior but there are many wonderful mixed breeds dogs also. No matter which group of dog you consider for a pet always become knowledgeable before selecting a breed.
