We want to get a dog, which breed would be best for young children? Prefer small enough for a dog flap!?

We are looking into getting a dog (we did have a german shepherd but she died a year ago) and want a breed that is good with children – we have a 3 and 6 year old. We also have 2 cats (both were used to the previous dog) My husband does shift work and I work 3 days a week so for the majority of the time the dog would only be left for a few hours at a time. However for the odd occasions when it is left it would be better for us if it could get through a dog flap into a secure part of the garden. Any advice for a dog that is good with children and doesn’t howl when left?

Dog flapps come in all sizesbut I suggest my breed a austrailin sheperd they love kids but need a lot of play time

Tamaskan — Choosing the Breed of Dog That’s Right for You

Getting a dog can change your life. If you get a dog that is compatible with your lifestyle, it can be a very rewarding experience, but all dogs require love, attention, care and training, so before you make that decision, ask yourself these questions:

Do I have time to give a dog the attention it requires?
Do I have the ability to provide proper grooming, exercise and training for a dog?
Can I afford the expenses that come with a dog?
Do I have what it takes to be a strong pack leader?
Do I want to buy a dog from a breeder or adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue?

If, after answering the above questions, you decide to move forward with getting a dog, it would be wise to learn about the different breeds and their characteristics, personality/temperament, possible health conditions and exercise and grooming requirements in order to make an informed decision.

This article is a basic overview of one particular breed — a Tamaskan.  Read on to decide if this breed of dog is compatible with your particular lifestyle.

History/Background: The Tamaskan, meaning “Mighty Wolf” in North American Indian language, is said to have originated in Finland, although that is uncertain.  Five husky-type dogs were imported into the UK from the USA in the early 1980s and were then bred to Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky and German Shepherd crosses, attempting to create a dog that resembled a wolf but with high intelligence, a good temperament and good working ability.  Breeding continued down through the years to improve the bloodlines and the bloodlines were finally closed in 2006.  The Tamaskan was first imported into the USA in 2005 and has since grown in popularity.  The Tamaskan Dog Register was formed in February 2006. Although it looks like a wolf, it has no wolf content.

Physical Characteristics: The Tamaskan is large and athletic, slightly taller than German Shepherds.  It has a wolf-like appearance with small ears, a straight bushy tail and coarse,thick coat in three main colors, red gray, black gray and wolf gray, with black overlay and characteristic wolf mask.  Eyes are yellow through amber and brown, with light colored eyes being very rare. Adults typically measure 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 95 pounds.

Personality/Temperament: This breed is highly intelligent and excels in agility, sled racing and obedience training but can be stubborn and requires pack leadership.  It is highly sociable, friendly, affectionate, eager to please and makes an ideal family dog and loyal companion.  It is tolerant toward other dogs and gentle with children.  It prefers the company of people or other dogs and, if left alone for long periods of time, may become destructive or try to escape.  It responds well off leash and, with a small amount of training, will return when called.  It makes an excellent working dog.  A Tamaskan is not a good guard dog because of its friendliness toward strangers.  Some Tamaskans, like other arctic breeds, will howl.

Possible Health Conditions:  No known health issues have yet arisen.  The average life expectancy is 14 to 15 years.

Exercise/Grooming: The Tamaskan is very active and needs a great deal of exercise such as a daily long walk or brisk jog.  It requires free running and, if trained, will return when called.  Because it is highly intelligent, it needs mental exercise, as well.  Grooming is fairly easy and includes a good brushing once a week, more during times of molting.

Living Conditions:  The Tamaskan is not recommended for apartment life and may become destructive or attempt to escape if left alone for long periods of time.  It needs a large place for free running every day.

Summary:  The Tamaskan is a large dog that resembles a wolf but is highly sociable and affectionate and makes an ideal family dog.  It requires little grooming and has no known health issues so far but does require a great deal of physical and mental exercise and may display destructive behavior if left alone for long periods of time.  So, now that you’ve learned a little about this breed of dog, one question remains — Is a Tamaskan the right breed for you?

German Shepherd Haircut

german shepherd haircut
Should I give my German Shepherd a hair cut?

I have a 3 year old German Shepherd. She is almost completely black and it is like 100 degrees here. Should I take her to get a haircut?

No. German shepherds and other double-coated breeds have an insulating undercoat. This undercoat obviously keeps them warmer in the winter, but it also helps to insulate them against the heat as well. If you shave her, she will loose this protection and most likely feel even hotter. A black coat is going to absorb heat from the sunlight regardless of whether it is short or long. Aside from removing the insulating layer of her coat, shaving her may cause her coat to grow back in poorly (too rough, too thin, or even too short). It may or may not happen with the first cut, but repeated shaving will eventually ruin her coat. Also, if it is cut too short, cutting her short could expose her skin to sun and cause her to burn (just imagine how uncomfortable that must be, a sunburn on top of having prickly short fur!) Plus she will continue to shed the shorter hair…which will mean tiny prickly uncomfortable hair all over your house or your body (when you pet her).

Your best bet is to leave her fur alone and keep her cool. Bring her inside and don’t ask her to do a lot of exercise during the hottest part of the day. Make sure she has plenty of water available. You can hose her down or provide her with a kiddie wading pool full of water to help keep her cool when she is outside. Try to avoid spending a lot of time in the sunlight, especially when it is strongest during the middle of the day (from about 9am to 6pm in my area, yours may differ depending on latitude).

german shepherd haircut
Dog of Chow and German Shepherd background, med-long fur, top and under coat. Haircut or not?

I live in New Mexico and during the summer months it gets quite hot. My dog is a mix of Chow and German Shepherd with med-long fur and has both a top and under coat. Should I use the clippers to trim down her fur in the summer months or not. Some people say yes, to keep her cool. Others say no, the undercoat keeps her from getting too hot. Another thing is that during the summer with her thick fur, it’s very hard to be sure she is tick free. Even with a regular bath, flea/tick collar and other methods it’s possible to miss some. So basically… To cut or not to cut? That’s my question.

Don’t cut. Like someone said in your details, the thick coat actually keep them cool. Also if you do cut it it will just grow back thicker. Brush her/him regulary too keep from mats, be easier to locate ticks. Don’t buy tick/flea collars they’re horrible things, its more expensive but it works, try buying some frontline, or advantage flea and tick.

Good luck with your dog!

German Shepherd Lab Mix Size

Can anyone identify the mix breeds in this puppy for me?

I got a puppy from the shelter today, and they think its a Rottweiler mix. Someone else suggested it was a lab mix of some kind, maybe german shepherd. Heres some pics…

Our new puppy, Jade.

Jade

Jade

Anyone have any ideas? Also, any idea on what its size might be when it gets older? Temperment? Thanx =)

What a cute little angel-face she has. Kudos to you for saving such a sweet puppy. She definately looks like a Rottweiler and by her current size and the size of her paws I would say she’s going to get pretty big (probably 70-80 lbs). As far as her temperment goes, most mixed breads tend to have a pretty even temperment. Just make sure that she gets all her necessary shots as soon as possible and start socializing her with other dogs and people, people, people! Make sure she gets comfortable around other people by taking her places with crowds, take her to different peoples’ house-friends, family, etc and if you can try taking her to work with you. Get her exposed to as many situations as possible so later on she won’t have a negative reaction to any situation she’s put in. Good luck!

Is Hip Dysplasia Affecting Your Dog?

Some people often just assume their dog is getting old when he starts to limp or when there is some stiffness evident. Often enough this is Hip Dysplasia and you should take action to help eliminate discomfort and pain as soon as possible. It is most common in large dogs but is also found in smaller breeds from time to time.

What is canine hip dysplasia?

The area affected is in and around the dog’s hips and it’s called Hip Dysplasia. In a nutshell, sometimes the hips are not shaped properly which can leave the dog prone to hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia in dogs can occur in puppies from as young as 5 months, but the ensuing arthritis in the hips generally doesn’t strike Spot until he is middle aged.

Dog breeds susceptible to hip dysplasia.

Some breeds of dogs are well known for being genetically susceptible to hip dysplasia. Mixed breed dogs can also suffer from hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices has seen a decline in hip dysplasia numbers, but these dogs still have a higher than average chance of having dysplasia:
* Rottweilers.
* Labs and retrievers.
* German shepherds.
* Great Danes.
* Mastiffs.
* Saint Bernards.
* Dobermans.

Hip arthritis can also be found in and medium sized dogs as well.

Signs of hip dysplasia include:

* early morning stiffness.
* behavioural changes and sometimes personality changes too.
* awkwardness or clumsy steps.
* unable to exercise as much as before.
* disinterest in fetching.
* problems getting up from lying down or sitting.
* limping, favoring one or both back legs, or stiff or unusual gait.
* opting to sleep away from others.
* pain when back leg is extended.
* discomfort or sensitivity when lower back or back legs are prodded.
* can’t or won’t jump into the car anymore.

Hip dysplasia treatments.

Dog arthritis can be treated in a myriad of ways icluding dog medicines, dog supplements and even aids to help make Rover happy again. One of the most popular options is glucosamine, which has been incredibly successful in aiding humans with osteoarthritis. Dog supplements containing glucosamine chondroitin have become one of the first treatment options. Don’t underestimate a good night’s sleep and other orthopedic aids as handy comfort providers such as special dog beds and ramps etc. For further information on glucosamine, treatments and aids click here.

Weight Management.

The most prominent element to affect or enhance hip dysplasia is the dog’s weight. The more your dog weighs, the more strain is being placed on those hips. Keeping your dog in his healthy weight range could save him from immense pain and suffering down the track.

Would a female german shepherd attack an 8 week old puppy of a different breed?

my friend has a 3 year old german shepherd (lilly) that doesn’t get along that well with that many dogs. Lilly has had some socialization with other dogs, but not that much. I want to introduce her tomy dog, Sadie who is a border collie at 8 weeks, but would it be safe to introduce them while they are on leashes?

Yes it would. If the dog is doing it right now, it won’t make any excuses for a puppy. Usually dogs don’t have much patience for energetic young puppies to begin with anyways, so this would NOT be a good idea right now. If you must have them meet, do it safely each behind different fences. Being on leash sometimes stresses out dogs and cuts off natural communication. Off-leash in their own fenced area is best.

German Shepherd Dog Training

The one dog that has the potential to do just about anything is the German shepherd.  A well trained, correctly bred German shepherd can turn into the kind of dog that you are looking for; a wonderful pet for the family, competitive obedience dog, or a trained attack dog, you name it and they can probably do it.  All around working skills is what this breed of dog was designed for.  German shepherd dog training will be the glue that holds the pieces together.

German Shepherd Dog Training

These great dogs are capable of learning at the early age of seven weeks old.  As long as the commands are simple, the puppy’s brain is able to begin to absorb them at seven weeks old; an important note to remember is it will take awhile for the body to catch up.  Teach your puppy games that he will enjoy for years to come.

Exercise will help your dog improve physically and mentally.  It’s fun to teach tricks and enjoyable to do.  Your dog will become more self assured the more he learns.  Your dog will learn new commands and signals that can used at a later time.  Offer your dog treats while teaching tricks.  As your puppy matures, doing some tricks for some praise will be very exciting for him.

German shepherd training is best done with positive methods.  Training your dog without hurting them is the best way.  Positive training uses positive reinforcements to reach the desired behavior.  Training your dog using the positive method doesn’t mean the dog gets to do whatever it wants to do.   Acceptable behavior allows them to get their reward.  Using positive training produces a dog that is happy and eager.  Positive training lets your dog obey out of trust.  Your dog and you will become a team.

Tips for Training Your German Shepherd

Leash Training

In the beginning, while walking your dog, they might want to carry the leash in their mouth.  They can carry the leash for the first few times, but aren’t allowed to chew on it.  While holding the leash in your left hand, keep the dog to your left side.  The dog should always be trained with short lessons.  It could take several lessons before the dog starts to figure out leash training.

The Sit and The Down

 Positive training using treats for teaching the sit.  The treat is held in front of the dog’s nose, and then lift it up and back.  This helps the dog fold his legs under him. While you’re using the treat to get him to sit, don’t forget to say “sit”.  When the dog sits give him his treat.

You start in the sit position, when teaching the down.  Slowly move the treat down and forward in front of the dog.  The dog will lower his front legs. Don’t forget to say “down”, while lowering the treat and after the dog lays down reward with the treat and lots of praise.

In Closing

Many German shepherd dogs have been ruined by incorrect training or lack of training. The experience that you have in training these dogs will be very exciting.  Living with a well trained German shepherd dog is a trip of a life time.

Using Keywords pt 4 – Google and Your Keywords

When Doing Internet Research, Google Is Your Best Friend

Like many business, Google puts out public announcements to let the world know of new products, new business ventures and the like.  But when it comes to making adjustments in their search engine, they quite often just make the changes and don’t say too much about them.  So if you are not paying close attention you may be missing out on some of the information they are offering.

Using Keywords – Pay Attention To What Google Is Telling You

When you go to Google’s search engine page, it’s intentionally sparse. There is the Google logo, the search input area and several links right next to that.  And these links are  very important.  The links are ‘advanced search’, search preferences’, and if you are on the iGoogle page you will see ‘language tools

Query Suggestions

Lets click on the ‘search preferences’ link. This is where you are presented with several choices as to how your search results will be displayed. Most likely, the defaults will suit your needs, but make any changes you would like but do  make sure in the Query Suggestions’ section,  that the ‘Provide Query Suggestions in the Search Box’ is checked. This is important.  Click on save changes and go back to the Google search engine input box.

In keeping with our earlier keyword research theme, type in ‘German Shepherds’.  Notice that as you are typing in your word or phrase, suggestions are popping up directly underneath your search term.  Google is telling you exactly what information people are looking for, and the words they are using to search for it.  So right there, before you even click on the search button, Google gives you a few ideas for you to play with.

Now, click on search and scroll down to the bottom of the page.  There you will see ‘Searches related to: german shepherds’. And right below that, keyword links that will take you directly to the search results for that word or phrase.

Keep Drilling Down

Now you can keep repeating this process until you find those little gold keyword nuggets that do exist.  Be sure to go back and put these suggestions into the Google  keyword tool to see how many people are using these search terms and how competitive they are before you actually start using them to build your website or do any article writing.

Can You Keep A Secret?

When you do find those little keyword nuggets, tell no one! Do not share your find on internet forums, or even tell your friends.  Because someone will tell someone who will tell someone….

There are many good people who are into internet marketing and who actually want to be helpful to others.  But there are many sharks out there and all it takes is one shark to find out what your advantage is, and poof, it will be gone.

If you do need some help and are a member of a internet marketing forum, don’t use your actual keyword nuggets or your actual website to offer up as an example.  Remember that there are thousands of people who read these forums and are just lurking around trying to find ideas.  Find a way to present your question without giving up your actual information.

In the next part of using keywords, we will take a look at Google’s Wonder Wheel.

Marking v.s. Separation Anxiety?

I have a 5 year old German Shepherd/Husky mix. Whenever I leave the house he pees in the house. It’s not just a little bit, but good size puddles. I always take him out before i leave, but I’m also trying to get him use to me being gone and going when I come back to let him out. I know when I leave him in my room he doesn’t do it.

I’m not really sure what to do. I don’t know how to punish him or if I should since I’m not catching him in the act of doing it. What should I do?

My mothers dogs do the same thing – she is usually home, and when she does leave them she almost always comes home to a puddle.

I dont know if its an expression of anxiety, anger, or just an attempt at a coup. :o )

But I would confine him when you are not home, if he has to be inside.
As long as he is not confined for long periods of time, it will not hurt him, and it should help establish the habit of not going in the house when you are not home.

(There is no point in punishing him unless you catch him in the act. He will not understand why you are upset.)

Be Sure You Choose The Right Dog Breed For You

Each year, more and more new dog breeds are added to the already growing list. Currently, the American Kennel Club, or AKC, recognizes over 150 different breeds and has seven different groups to categorize them. These groups include; sporting, working, toy, terrier, hound, herding, and non-sporting breeds.

The working category of breeds refers to those canines who aren’t merely pets or companions for humans, but rather are working animals that are now or have been trained to perform certain tasks. The working breed category includes: border collie, boxer, german shepherd, great dane, labrador retriever, rottweiler, st. Bernard, siberian husky.

Terriers are a lively group of dogs that were originally bred for hunting small animals such as rabbits and foxes, with most types coming from the British Isles. This category includes some well known dog breeds such as: american pit bull, australian, boston, bull, cairn, fox, jack russell, rat, scottish, welsh, west highland.

Also called teacup or tiny, the Toy category features the smallest of dogs who generally weigh under 20 to 25 pounds and include: Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Havanese, Maltese, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Pug, Shih Tzu, Toy and Miniature, Poodles, Yorkshire Terrier.

There are also categories that use other criteria to describe dogs, such as those that are considered hypoallergenic or non-shedding. Some of these include: Airedale, Basenji, Cairn, Kerry Blue, Norfolk, Tibetan, and Welsh Terriers; Chinese Crested, Poodle, Schnauzer

A growing number of ‘designer dogs’ that mix certain breeds are becoming popular. These include many dogs that are part Poodle:

- Labradoodle (Labrador and Poodle)
- Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle)
- Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle)
- Maltipoo (Maltese and Poodle)
- Schnoodle (Schnauzer and Poodle)

Dog breeds may also be grouped by the size and weight of the dog.

- Toy breeds are 10 pounds or less.
- Small breeds are 10 to 25 pounds.
- Medium breeds are 25 to 50 pounds.
- Large breeds are 50 to 75 pounds.
- Extra large breeds are over 75 pounds.

While any dog can be trained to be good around children and toddlers, there are those who seem to have an extra affinity and tolerance for kids. And of course, any dog who is not trained or poorly socialized will not do well with children. Some of the breeds known for being good for families with children include:

- Basset Hound
- Bulldog
- Collie
- English Setter
- Golden Retriever
- Newfoundland
- Samoyed
- Standard Poodle

How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for You

There are many different variables to consider when trying to decide on the right breed of dog for you and your family. Before trying to pick which type of dog would do best in your home, ask yourself the following questions:

Training: All dogs require some type of obedience training and house training, but some need a bit more work than others. Do you have the time and patience necessary to train certain types of dogs?

Size: Do you have the room in your home and yard to accommodate a dog, and if so, what size?

Exercise/walking requirements: Do you have the time and energy it takes to see that a dog has the proper amount of exercise they need to stay happy and healthy?

Grooming and shedding: Is anyone in your home allergic to animals? Do you have the resources and time to devote to grooming your dog on a regular basis?

is my dog a german shepherd?

i bought a dog from a friend’s friend cuz there are no breeders where i live, and the dude said it was a german shepherd…i know i should ave made sure but i was kinda excited……….now he doesnt look so much lyk a german shepherd any more…….hes black and tan and his patterns are just lyk other gsds ive seen…..but his legs are quite long and not as stubby as a gsd’s…..and his snout is kinda long too…..and only one of his ears stand….hes 8 weeks old…what breed is he??…HELP
errrrr….how do i add photos????…does it have to be my profile pic

As you said – the time to worry was BEFORE you accepted the pup.

Without full registration papers he cannot be regarded as a genuine GSD – he can get registration as a dog for obedience competition, but not as a GSD for breeding, showing, breed surveying.

Indeed, most pooches registered by the KCs in Britain, Canada, the USofA are not actually GSDs – they are the exaggerations we sneeringly call AlsatiOns, German Crouchers, NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs, Prick-Eared Bassets, or Titanic Tail-Tuckers, depending on which exaggerations are most prominent. Their long-ago ancestors were quality GSDs, but breeders since then have ignored the International Standard of the GSD: http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc It will tell you proper proportions for head, body, legs. Being a herding breed, the GSD is SUPPOSED to be leggy, although not as leggy as Coyotes.
To see some genuine GSDs plus some deviations, click http://www.leabashiba.com/fashion.vs.GSD.htm

Expect his ears to go up & down a few times before becoming permanent at 7-9 months old. Unless a major injury happens to it, an ear that has ever been up under its own power (without assistance from gravity or a head-wind) will eventually come up again. But while the pup is teething an ear can drop, fold forward, or lean against the other ear as though clothes-pegged together.

The longest I’ve had to wait for a bit.ch to have both ears up at the same time was 9 months. (One of her pet sons is on the Home page of the group I list next.)
It usually happens a couple of months earlier.
But do give your pup a gnaw bone (eg, as an ox-tail or part of a sheep-spine) last thing every night. It not only gives him something to do while you’re boringly asleep, the gnawing also:- exercises the facial muscles that control the ears, cleans the teeth, dislodges deciduous teeth, helps permanent teeth break through the gum; and any bits swallowed have the perfect calcium : phosphorous ratio.

• I hope you are booked-in to a training class that starts when he becomes 18-22 months old. The instructor coaches YOU to improve your technique, and at the same time your pup learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.

• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders.

Forget YA – it is a clumsy place that allows you to give links but not to paste-in photos, and not to have a dialogue to follow up answers and get explanations of puzzling bits.
• Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups devoted to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to talk about, and how active they are. Those are where you will get knowledgeable answers to your questions; and unlike YA they are set up for follow-ups to clarify points, and allow photos.

Is US K9 Academy a good place to get my dog trained?

I have a one-year old pure bread german shepherd and I am looking for someone to give her obedience training. I spoke to this guy named Peter from US K9 academy in Hialeagh, FL. Is he any good? Does anyone know if its worth leaving my dog with him to train??????

I know Peter, but, instead of asking here, why not just go down there and ask Peter, tell him to show you what you want to see and then decide if your “breaded” GSD can do the course!!
Hope I helped!!

French Film Soars at Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival is over for another year. The votes have been tallied, the red carpet was rolled up, and the world’s beautiful people have gone back to looking like the rest of us, or so we can dream. The 61st annual festival drew the eyes of the film industry and movie buffs alike across the pond to France, if only for 10 short days.

At the top of this year’s festival was the French film entitled “The Class,” a real-life depiction of life at a junior high school. It took home the Palme D’or, the festival’s biggest award.

It was the first French film to win the big prize since “Under Satan’s Sun” won the prize in 1987. All of the festival’s winners were selected by jury president Sean Penn and a nine-member jury including such Hollywood power players as Natalie Portman, all of whom voted for “The Class” to take home the Palme. The film was touted for its relevant social commentary and unconventional style.

Some other highlights of the prizes awarded include:

* Italian films by Matteo Garrone (“Gomorra”) and Paolo Sorrentino (“Il Divo”) took home the second- and third-place prizes.

* Benicio Del Toro took home best-actor honors for his role in “Che,” Steven Soderbergh’s epic about Che Guevara.

* Best actress accolades went to Sandra Corveloni for her role in “Linha de Passe,” a film in which she plays a mother of four struggling to make ends meet in a Brazilian slum.

* Best director went to Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylon for the film “Three Monkeys,” which is the story of a father who takes the fall for his employer’s crime in order for financial security for his wife and son.

* Former two-time Palme D’or winners Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne received the screenplay prize for their film “Lorna’s Silence,” about an immigrant woman who gets married only to gain Belgian citizenship.

* British filmmaker Steve McQueen won the first-time director prize for his film “Hunger,” a piece set in a prison in Northern Ireland where an IRA volunteer leads a hunger strike.

Another jury, the International Federation of Film Critics, awarded a special prize to film legend Clint Eastwood, who directed the competition film “The Exchange,” starring Angelina Jolie. Eastwood has never taken home top honors at the festival despite having made five appearances since 1985.

A film from Kazakhstan entitled “Tulpan” won a lesser competition called “Un Certain Regard.” “Tulpan” is a film about a shepherd who must wed before he can enter his trade, but his only prospect for marriage refuses him because of his large ears!

Other runner-up jury awards went to Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Tokyo Sonata,” James Toback’s documentary “Tyson,” German director Andreas Dresen’s “Cloud 9″ and Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s “Johnny Mad Dog,” about child soldiers in Africa.

In general, the festival judges found this year’s films to be somewhat lacking, especially in comparison to last year’s blockbuster hits like Joe and Ethan Coen’s “No Country for Old Men,” which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, proving that it attracted fans of both mainstream and unconventional films.

The festival closed out with the premiere of Barry Levinson’s “What Just Happened?” starring Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis and Sean Penn in a story about a has-been Hollywood producer who tries to revitalize his career while dealing with issues in his personal and professional lives.

With the Cannes Film Festival now wrapped up, Hollywood’s eyes are now turning toward Venice, where many U.S. films are expected to elbow out the competition on the Lido.

Hollywood heavyweights like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich will likely be there in support of the Coen brothers’ film “Burn After Reading,” and the stars of the film “Body of Lies,” Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe will also likely make an appearance. Kiera Knightly and Ralph Fiennes, stars of “The Duchess,” are also expected to make an appearance.

Dog Fits – A Frightening Experience!

All dog lovers and dog owners hate the very thought of their beloved furry friend falling prey to any dog health problem. Moreover, it’s truly distressing and painful to experience to watch your loving Fido convulsing in front of your eyes. Yes, a dog fit or a seizure is definitely frightening and damaging, more for you than for your dog, especially when the pooch loses complete control over his faculties, falls over, bites his teeth, drools, salivates, whines, paddles his paws, and may be even loses complete control over his bowel and urination. Dog fits, typically known as seizures, also lead to dilation or enlargement of eyes as your pooch becomes unresponsive. Pet health care experts feel that in case of dog seizures, the pet owner tends to panic as a sense of helplessness pervades him/her.

One of the most common causes of dog fit is epilepsy. Pet health care experts have identified certain dog breeds as being more susceptible to epilepsy. Nevertheless, cause for hereditary or genetic epilepsy are yet unknown. Some of the breeds prone to such seizures include: Cocker Spaniel, German Shepherd, Irish Setter, Poodle, Collie, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Dachshund, Saint Bernard, Siberian Husky, Miniature Schnauzer, and Wire-haired Terrier.

Other causes of seizures in dogs are allergies to 100% commercial dog food chemicals, preservatives, or/and artificial flavors. Sometimes liver, kidney diseases, tumors, low blood sugar, food poisoning, inflammation of the central nervous system, etc can also lead to the dog health problem of seizures. It has been observed by pet health care experts that dog fits are very common in younger and middle-aged dogs because of parasites (worms, fleas etc) combined with an unhealthy and poor diet.

Seizure in dog is a serious sign of dog health problem. When the central nervous system of the dog goes out of control as response to unchecked localized brain activity, seizures happen and resonate through the entire body in the form of electrical waves. In most cases, seizures only last for a couple of minutes at the most. But, repeated fits in your dog can be life-threatening as they take a lot of toll on the body, exhausting and luckily diminishing the much needed biochemicals that help maintain the orderly flow of electrons to the brain.

Many anxious and troubled pet owners ask the pet health care experts if the dogs feel any pain during seizures. You’ll be happy to know that though dog fits are pretty dramatic, your pooch doesn’t experience any pain, he only feels bewildered. However, ensuring that the dog health problem of seizures doesn’t prove fatal, you must prevent your dog from falling on the floor and hurting himself badly.

Finally, the most important thing for you to do when you dog is having a fit is to STAY CALM. It may be a difficult thing to do, but a reassuring, quiet and calm voice will comfort your pooch to get through this very dramatic situation.

german shepherd diarrhea
my german shepherd has been pooping like white diarrhea and not been wanting to eat. Any know whats wrong?

Could be many different things. The only one who can tell you what’s wrong with your dog is a vet. Bring a sample of your dogs stool with you! We cannot diagnose your dog, over the Internet. We would only be guessing what’s wrong and that will not help your dogs situation any.

Dog First Aid Kit Ingredients

Dog First Aid Kits are easy enough to create. First you need some kind of container to hold all the medicines, drugs and supplies in such as a tackle box, old lunch box or some other shoe box sized plastic container. It should be water-proof, strong enough to withstand mild pressure and have a clasp of some sort – but not locking.

Label it on all sides with a felt tip marker so that it is easy to read. Something such as “Dog First Aid Kit” or whatever just so you can easily know the difference between your human first aid kit (if you made it yourself as well) and this one for your dog(s) and puppy (s).

Under the lid of your dog first aid kit would be a great place to tape an index card which contains the numbers of your local veterinarian, poison control, and other canine emergency numbers for your dogs (emergency vet, etc).

It would also be a good place to list a description of your dog(s) including color, weight, name, health issues, distinguishing characteristics and a recent photo labeled with the name of each pet. Your dog will thank you in the case of some sort of disaster or emergency when you are not at home for some reason.

Below is a list of several items you should obtain to place within your dog first aid kit and brief explanations as to what each item is for. Remember, your dogs health may depend on it.
