Companions, Workers, Helpers all on Four Legs!

Dogs over the years have become a very integral part of our lives. They are our loyal companions. They do not talk back, they do not judge us, they are there when we need their companionship and their help.

Today we use dogs for a wide range of tasks. There are dogs to lead the blind, help people in wheelchairs, visit sick people in hospitals, sniff out drugs and so much more.

Of course for a dog to get to this point, extensive training is necessary. For some dogs they are specifically bred for some of these tasks. For example the Seeing Eye breeds their own German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden retrievers and Labrador/Golden crosses. These dogs spend time with a foster family until they are old enough to return for training.

It is the foster family’s responsibility to love, care for and give gentle guidance to this possible future Seeing Eye dog. This dog will allow somehow who is visually impaired lead a normal independent life.

The foster family plays a very important part in the training process. They will be building the foundation for the intense training that these dog will go through.

They need to show this puppy as much of the outside world as possible. For example they need exposure to things such as traveling in a car, sounds, sudden noises, other animals, crowds etc. These dogs can not be spooked by these things when they are working as a Seeing Eye Dog.

If for some reason these dogs do not pass their training they are offered back to the foster family as a pet or are placed in a home or possibly another agency that will use the dog such as a police department.

Even though many of us that have dogs will never train our dog to this extent it is very important that we at least teach our dog the basics of obedience.

Our dogs need to learn how to walk on a leash, sit, lay down and come when called. Of course they also need to be housebroken. This training as I have said before starts the day we bring them home. You can’t let that puppy run amuck for three months and then expect them to pick up on the training right away. You need to build the foundation blocks for future training.

One thing that people do seem to let a new puppy get away with is nipping. Some people seem to think since they still have their baby teeth it is no big deal. The nip just seems like a little love bite. What happens when your puppy outgrows those baby teeth and is still nipping? Well if you have a large breed dog I would say that someone could get seriously hurt. Even a small breed can do a lot of damage.

Would it not have been easier when the puppy first started this to correct it and refocus his biting over to an acceptable toy? Yes, I know, it is just so cute when they are biting your hand and growling when they are so small but it is not cute when they grow up and those jaws have enough force to not only break the skin but possibly break a bone.

Another thing that people tend to do when their puppy is small is to play rough with the puppy. The rough play does tire them out but unfortunately you are teaching them that this is acceptable behaviour. As they grow and become stronger they are going to be harder to handle. Wouldn’t it be better to walk them or teach them to fetch a ball or a frisbee? This will also tire them out.

Even though you have introduced some bad habits right away these dogs are still very trainable. It may take a little longer, so remember to be patient when you are training. If you have the time and the patience you can teach you dog many things. Just training the basics is a good start but you can have so much fun teaching them other things as well. Not only will it tire them out but it will help you also.

Winter can be a miserable time of the year for those of us that get cold weather and snow. However I find it a great time to be out in the yard with the dogs. Their first snow has to be the funniest. Nothing to me is funnier than watching a dog catch a snowball and wondering where it went. The look on there face is priceless.

German Shepherd Obedience Training

german shepherd obedience training
What is the cost of dog training/obedience?

I have 2 German Shepherds. 1 mail 1yr. 1 female 9 months. I want to adopt another male German Shepherd that is 21/2 yrs. What is the average cost of training do you think?

Hi there, hope your doing ok!

Here are your options for various kinds of dog training programs:

There are group dog training sessions that usually cost around $40 – $130 and that last four to eight weeks, 1 hour per session.

There are also private dog training sessions, where the trainer himself will visit your house or work place to give your dog a professional training for around two – four weeks. This type costs around $1000 – $2,500 and training session usually last longer compared to group training sessions.

Yes it is quite expensive, but you can rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Most dog trainers focus on different areas of your dog’s attitude and obedience and after that training program, you will begin to appreciate the difference it did for your dog and for you. Standard training classes usually focus on addressing your dog’s chewing, barking, biting and digging behavior.

Here are a few tricks that are free though

Start Using Sign Language to Communicate with Your Dog

Believe it or not, your dog never did learn to obey your voice commands. Sure, it may have appeared to obey “sit, stay, and come” or whatever else you have taught it but really your dog learned to follow some other signal. Your dog learned that when you move a certain way you want to it do the trick.

If you watch yourself, you will start seeing that maybe you pat your leg when you want it to come or raise your hand when you want it to sit. Do the sign without the words and your dog will still do the trick. In fact, teach tricks without the sign and your dog will learn faster.

Start Using Body Language

This goes right along with sign language. Many times, people wonder why my dogs don’t rush the door when the doorbell rings. It is because I have taught them not to do this. I tell people I can teach their dogs not to rush the door in less than five minutes as well. (No one ever believes me.)

I have a volunteer ring the doorbell. When the dogs rush the door, I get between the dogs and the door and loom over the dogs. The dogs back away. I back the dogs up until the dogs get to a predefined point. Then, I go towards the door. If the dogs start towards the door, I turn and loom towards the dogs again until they back up past the point. It takes a few minutes but they get the point. (Sometimes I add the word “back” if they have been trained, but not always.)

This method takes a few doorbell rings for the dogs to learn that they are not to go past the predefined point. Then, I have the owners try the doorbell challenge. The owners are always shocked at how fast the dogs learn not to rush the door. It only took a little body language to learn.

Stop Yelling at the Dogs

This is actually a common mistake. The dogs start barking and people start yelling to be quiet. This is really reinforcing the behavior. In essence, you are telling the dogs there is something to bark about and you are joining in by sounding the alarm.

While this may sound odd, this is an effective maneuver. If your dogs are barking at something outside, call them inside. Even if they only stay inside for a few minutes, you interrupted the pattern and stopped the barking. If they are barking inside, send them out. The message sent is barking equals they must leave the activity and quiet means they get to stay. Never pet a barking dog.

Hope this was helpful

German Shepherd Dogs Training Equipment

In order to proceed to German shepherd training, you must have German shepherd dogs training equipment. You must have enough and good qualities of equipment to have a successful training. For best result you must train it the dog in its younger days. This will assure you that when it grows it would be one of the best dogs ever. Experience is a factor here. When that dog started training in his younger year he will have more experience than the others.

One of these equipment is what we call muzzles. This will prevent your dog from biting anyone.

These muzzles must be lightweight so that the dog that is wearing will feel comfort. This kind of gear is perfect for training. You can use it also when travelling with your dog or paying a visit to a veterinarian. It must have designs that fits to the dog and must be durable.

These equipments are also essential in training your German shepherd dog: dog harness, collar and leash. Harness – this will help keep dogs from pulling. Collar – it is equipment that is used for control, identification and fashion. Leash- it is equipment that is used to lead, control or hold an animal, it is a chain, strap or rope that can be attached to the harness or collar of a dog.

Having all of this essential equipment is a big factor in a successful training. But having this alone is not sufficient. There are still things to be considered. Some of these factors are the dog trainer, the place where you conduct your training and of course the dog itself. The dog trainer must pass all the qualifications for a good trainer and experience is the best trait that they must possess. The place must be in a quiet and peaceful area where there are no other disturbances. The dog’s attitude is also a big factor to be considered. The more obedient your dog is, the more assurance to a successful training.

Things you need to remember when Training German Shepherds

Training German Shepherd dog is truly a wonderful thing to do since this breed is not only goo as working dogs, but they can also be your best buddy and family pet. The German shepherd however is different from any other breeds when it comes to handling and training them. This breed is a large, strong athletic breed which requires a good amount of mental stimulation and exercise. These dogs are positively willing to serve and please their masters. As a good working dog, a German shepherd is enough to act as a deterrent but when it is ordered into action; only a few numbers of dogs can match to it as an all-rounder.

If you want to own a German shepherd, you need to consider the commitment when it comes to training for you to be able to obtain a well behaved and happy pet that you can go out with safely in public. Training German shepherd, especially a youngster and if it is your first name, you should not take it lightly. Youngsters can be very boisterous and they can easily knock over children or elder members of the family, especially if your pet is not discouraged from jumping especially when it is feeling excited. If a German shepherd gets bored, they tend to be destructive, especially when they are left alone. This breed takes 3 years to mature and so you need to be very patient as you will be in for a long haul getting though the puppy and its adolescent stage. German shepherds needs to be socialized as well starting from an early age and needs to be exposed to lots of people often for them not to develop an aggressive nature.

You may let your puppy join a training class and when choosing one, make sure to check if the class will accept a German shepherd in its training. Avoid classes that will ask you to put a muzzle into your dog as no reputable school would even require that. If your pet tends to be aggressive to other dogs, a canny collar will be useful enough to control it. Remember that the earlier you start training German shepherd and socializing it as well, the earlier they will become protective of their owner and their property. Another important part of the training that you should teach your pet is to get used to being groomed. German shepherds shed an ample amount of hair so you need to be prepared for cleaning dog hairs all over your house, and make sure that you have prepared a very good vacuum cleaner to make the task easier.

Training German shepherd should be a part of your daily routine for it to be able to learn faster. If you do not have the time to do so, make sure to enroll your pet in a training class and let a professional trainer do it for you. If you are in need of more details, you may search on the internet or seek an advice from a professional for you to fully understand the proper approach in training your pet.

German Shepherd Breed Standard Weight

April 28th, 2009 admin No comments

german shepherd breed standard weight
Is it possible to show a German Shepherd in AKC conformation if…?

the dog is from Czech or DDR lines? As long as the dog is in breed standard (height, weight, color), could it show and not be DQed for not having as much angulation and slping back(I know their not supposed to, but most judges like it)? It would not be as overdone as American GSDs. I know most DDR and Czech GSDs can finish their UKC and INTernational championships. What would happen if I were to show a real GSD in AKC conformation?

IT depends on the german shepherds conformation, really. There are show line imported dogs that can be shown in the akc, even though they rarely win. They look more like the american lines then their working brothers, but they still have that bulkier look and blockier head. So yes, it is possible, and I have seen several imported dogs from show lines, not working lines, that are shown. But, most imported lines are bred from working lines, and were bred for functionality instead of shape, like it SHOULD be. Americans (and yes, I am an american, I’m just one of the smart ones) are just idiots that are swayed by the soft angular looks of the american lines.

Whip Worms in Dogs

Description Another unseen freeloader is the whipworm, which is the most difficult to exterminate. They do not need to leave the intestines to complete a life cycle.Eggs are passed in the dog’s stool and after 2-4 weeks in a warm, moist environment, they become infective to another dog. The eggs hatch and the worms mature in the cecal area of the intestine where they can cause chronic bowel inflammation.  How they are acquired Most common in adult animals especially those housed in groups or kennels because they can become infectious to other dogs after a few weeks in a warm environment. Harmful Effects to your Dog The symptoms may include severe diarrhea, flatulence, loss of weight and general overall condition. Whipworms can cause chronic bowel inflammation.

Harmful Effects to Man Luckily, these parasites only adhere to our canine friends. Treatment Fenbendazole (Panacur) is usually prescribed after diagnosis. To regulate these parasites, give doses of milbemycin oxime every month, a heartworm preventive medication.  Usually, large breeds of dogs are more prone to hip dysphasia. Labradors, Great Pyrenees, Great Danes, Retrievers, German Shepherds, Saint Bernards, Rottweilers and Sporting Dog Breeds are examples. However, small dogs can also acquire this. If your dogs belong to any of the mentioned breeds, the following information might help you.

What is Hip Displasia? Hip Displasia, a degenerative condition, is an abnormality in the expansion of the hip joint, where the ball joint of the dogs hips are misshapen, caused by too much laxity in the joint. This in turn results to wear and tear of the abnormal arthritic bones causing extreme pain. Not only can this cause pain, the joint can also come right out of the socket.

How did my dog acquire this? Hip displasia is a genetic disease, meaning the pup can inherit it from its parents. Note that not all dogs inclined to get this disease will acquire it. Other factors also contribute, like environmental factors, rapid weight changes and other genetic factors as well. Tracing your pet’s family lineage will help you determine if your dog is prone to this disease. If there is no incidence of hip displasia in your pet’s family, then your dog will not get it.

What are its symptoms? It is difficult to diagnose because it may or may not show clinical signs. Common signs exhibited are lameness on one or both rear limbs, difficulty in standing or walking, hopping like a bunny, and decrease in mobility. After the joint’s growth period, many pups display pain sporadically even before arthritis begins to exhibit. It can lead to severe arthritis, in which your pet can be in extreme pain. Rarely, puppies as young as 5 or 6 months can show these symptoms.

What is the treatment? If you suspect your dog has hip displasia, bring to the clinic and have your pet X-rayed. There are two methods to see if your dog has hip displasia – the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) testing uses a standard view and another developed by the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHip), which shows to be more effective in detecting Hip Disphasia in puppies.

There are two treatment plans based on the time the disease has occurred – before and after the growth of the hip joint. Triple Pelvic Osteotomy, the surgical reconstruction of the hip joint, is recommended for puppies less than a year of age. Be careful though – clinical symptoms related to hip dyspasia can be caused by other illnesses such as osteochondrosis, strain or sprain in one of the joints, or back and pelvis injury.

However, dogs that show symptoms after the growth, it is best to first find out of it can be treated through medication or surgery. Medical treatment includes aspirin, phenylbutazone or glycosaminoglycosans. Narcotics can be used to eliminate pain. There is a strong connection between the administration of glycosaminoglycans and a considerable decrease in the dog’s arthritis.

Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications can be used, different dogs have varying reactions to medicines. That’s why it is best to consult your veterinarian on which medicine works well for your dog. If this proves to be unsatisfactory, you may resort to surgery.

Total Hip Replacement is most excellent, especially for severe hip displasia. This is very effective because the hip joint is replaced with artificial parts to eradicate pain. Femoral Head Ostectomy or Femoral head and neck excision is also an option wherein just the femoral head is removed, which can be performed at any age. It eliminates most of the pain associated with hip arthritis because there is a reduced contact between the bones, but not all dogs are cut out for this method. Surgery is more costly primarily, but in the long run, it will save the dog owner on pain relievers. Once the surgery has completed, a recuperation period of about 3-6 months will be commended by the doctor.

Was it coincidence or a very smart dog?

http://www.examiner.com/x-1028-Pet-News-Examiner~y2010m4d23-German-Shepherd-dog-leads-Alaska-State-Troopers-to-fire-Video

Some people say dogs only do things to help humans when trained to help so is Buddy abnormal for a dog, highly trained or was it just coincidence that he helped the trooper find the fire?
It helps if you watch the video.
A more detailed article.

http://blogs.dogtime.com/nigel-sola-and-co/2010/04/alaskan-hero-dog-shows-troopers-to-fire

Couger, actually I do live in the country and every dog that runs around on it’s own doesn’t run right back to it’s home. If a dog is running loose and doesn’t want to get caught it won’t run along the road, it will run across fields and lawns away from it’s pursuer.

No, I don’t believe it has anything to do with a ‘coincidence’. We truly under estimate the power of the canine mind.

I have had too many personal experiences as a child and an adult not to believe this is exactly what it is.

What the dog did was a coupling of the animal’s ability to read his owner’s energy and acted on it.

I am a believer.

German Shepherd Siberian Husky Mix

April 25th, 2009 admin No comments

german shepherd siberian husky mix
German Shepherd x Husky size, In comparison to A purebred Siberian Husky?

I’m just wondering how big my Siberian Husky is going to get, I had a German Shepherd x Husky mix and had her until she was 13, and I was just wondering how much bigger ( estimated ) she should get. Both are female, my Siberian Husky is 5 months.

Thanks :]
When I said, “just wondering how much bigger she should get, I meant my Siberian husky, not my German shepherd.

This is the standard:
Height: Dogs, 21 to 23 1/2 inches at the withers. Bitches, 20 to 22 inches at the withers.
Weight: Dogs, 45 to 60 pounds. Bitches, 35 to 50 pounds

Siberian Huskies should be near those size guidelines. Although, there are some bad breeders out there breeding giant Siberians, so it all comes down to genetics.

german shepherd siberian husky mix
i am getting a german shepherd mixed with siberian husky?

the pup is 2 months old,any insight on german shepherds?and will the extra mix with husky have an effect?thanks!
and how big will it get?roughly?its a male
and its adopted :D

I have a white German Shepherd puppy, 2 of my friends have huskys, and I met my puppies parents. German Shepherd’s temperament (when full breed and of good breeding practices) is generally very affectionate, loyal, smart, and laid back, although they can be hyper as crap when they are little. They can make wonderful family pets, and can get along with cats well if they are introduced as a puppy. They are usually eager to learn and the things you can teach them are endless
as long as you use the right approach, which is why this breed is used so often in the police, fire, and search, and military forces. They can get huge. In fact, my puppies father outweighed me by 15 pounds and I’m 21 years old. Her mother was about 35 pounds lighter and quite a few inches shorter, but she was an abnormally smaller dog.

Huskys are generally more high strung and excited, although I have met some perfectly well behaved/adjusted ones. They are beautiful dogs as well, and with a lot of patience, can become great family pets. Both breeds need a lot of exercising, so prepare to spend time with your dog. It will probably be stunningly cute, especially as a puppy… I wish I could see a picture! It’s ears will more than likely stand up like typical german shepherd dogs since huskys have that trait as well. It will also probably have longer fur than common german shepherds, but I think that only makes them more beautiful!

Both breeds require lots of excercise (as I mentioned before) and lots of socialization as early in life as possible (as long as they are up to date on their shots). Enrolling in PetSmarts puppy class is a great place to start, and let your puppy meet your family, all different ages and races of people, and different dogs as well. The more, the merrier. This allows it to learn to distinguish between normal behavior and suspicious behavior. This is very important if you wish you dog to be in any way protective. It promotes intelligible guarding, instead of a dog that fears any and everyone that knocks on your door or tries to shake your hand. Also, both breeds require you to develop good grooming practices with your dog, and there are several dog books out their that will teach you how to do this correctly. Since both breeds shed, it is important to brush the dog at least once every few days, but don’t think this will be an overwhelming problem. Cat hair is a million times worse than these two breeds of dogs will ever be. :)

I suggest getting several books… all of which I have sitting on my coffee table right now! Don’t even wait until you have your puppy, they will be handy now! Head to your local library (or a bookstore if you feel like it) and grab these, please! They are wonderful:

* Kathy Santo’s Dog Sense (very good book and a surprisingly easy and interesting read!)

* For the love of the dog by Patricia McConnell

* Why does my dog act this way by Stanley Coren

* The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete (great insight to the german shepherd breed, but do not follow all the guidelines of this book religiously, as some are slightly outdated as most people don’t want to have as “dominating” of a relationship with their pet)

Lots of different possibilities in what it may look like:
* White german shepherd – http://www.hoflin.com/images/image2673.gif
* white german shepherd as a puppy – http://www.polarbearpuppies.com/files/puppy_hug.jpg

German Shepherd Fleece

How do I keep dog hair off my polar fleece jacket?

My dog, a german shepherd, sheds seemingly year round. I have a green polar fleece jacket that I wear frequently, but it attracts hair from my dog like nothing else. The only way I’ve found to minimize the hair problem is to run my jacket through the dryer with like five of those fabric softener sheets. This methods works, but not completely and the effect lasts only for a few days at most.

To remove the hair, I just use tape, but with this much hair I run through tape quickly and it all comes back shortly thereafter.

What are some other methods to keep myself from looking like an idiot covered in dog hair?

Since it is winter right now, the humidity levels are very low and static is up, so dog hair is more likely to cling to you at this time of the year.
Ok here are some steps to minimize this.
1:Continue using fabric softener sheets
2: Use that non-cling spray that women spray on nylons to stop them sticking to their skirts
3: Brush and wash your dog as often as you can. Use a wired brush. There are also some special shampoos that help.
4: Try not to let your dog on places your jacket might touch such as chairs, couches, bed, and car seats.(put plastic on them if you have too!)
5: Buy one of this sticky rollers, then just use as necessary. They are fairly in expensive so keep one in your car, bedroom etc.
Good luck

German Shepherd Mastiff Mix Puppies

Two male dogs in household.?

I currently have a male 6 month old lab/german shepherd mix. i am getting a male 6 week old English Mastiff. Will the dogs do ok both being unneutered males in the same household. I was thinking since they are both still puppies they would grow together, but can problems arise later?

No, they usually don’t get along if they are unaltered. It’s best to have all of them fixed.

How To Choose The Perfect Dog

Dog is a person’s best friend, though popular sayings might lead you to think otherwise. Men, women and children can all benefit from the loving companionship of a furry canine family member. However, how exactly can you go about choosing the perfect dog for you? You may be thinking a dog is simply a dog and how hard can it be to choose, you just take the one you think is cutest right? If that was your plan for finding a pet, you are probably not ready yet! Instead, you need to carefully consider the different breeds available and choose an animal that best fits in with your family life and personality.

Environment

The first thing you need to consider is the size of your home and yard. Large breeds like Doberman’s, Mastiffs or German shepherd’s will need quite a bit of room to stretch their long legs. As a general rule, these dogs are not suited to total indoor life or apartment dwelling. If you have little or no yard but still want a dog for company, you should consider a smaller breed like the Chihuahua, pug, or miniature poodle. Of course, you can split the difference with a medium size dog such as a basset hound, Welsh corgi or Samoyed.

Children

Do you have or plan to have children in the near future? Certain breeds are simply not ideal when it comes to interacting with small children. A Golden Retriever, Saint Bernard or Labrador are excellent choices for children of all ages. Of course, you can raise any dog to be tolerant of children with proper training of both the animal and the child, but this takes added time and there are breeds that just do not have as much patience as others. This is perhaps one of the biggest factors you should take into consideration before getting a new dog.

Pure Bred or Mutt

The animal shelters are overflowing with dogs of all ages that need a home. The problem for some people is these animals are generally mixed breeds and it can be difficult to determine character traits plus you can never really know how a dog has been raised which can also affect how they behave.

On the other side of the fence, there is the purebred dog. Most of the time you will have a good idea of the main characteristics based on their bloodline alone. The down side is many purebred dogs are very expensive and it seems like the purer the bloodlines get the more prone to inherited disease they are. The healthiest dog you will ever find is your garden-variety mutt.

Personality

Finally, when you are choosing the perfect dog for you and your family you have to take your personality and lifestyle into account. Are you an active person who loves to hike, play sports and generally stay on the move? Alternatively, are you more of a couch potato who likes to spend an afternoon with the television and game console? There are dogs that can fit into either of these two personality and lifestyle traits.

Does anyone know of any websites with some kind of directory for places to board your dog while on vacation?

I live in Fairview Heights, Illinois and need to find a dog kennel place to board my 6 year old half half Boxer/half German Shepherd dog while on vacation from the 22nd of December until the 29th of December.

If anyone knows of any website that lists places like that by state or anything, that would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance for any help.

i hope this wil help

Is it odd for a german shepherd wolf mix in illinois?

my new “german shepherd” puppy is very reserved and latch on to my other dog (6 yr old golden retriever) almost instantly. He barks any time i walk into the room. He has an extremely narrow face. He resembles a wolf, but is supposibly 100% shepherd. i have yet to see paper to prove such. I live in Illinois. Is this odd for my area?

Illinois is rated by rescue groups as a third-level State for puppy-milling, but is right next to 2 of the 6 first-level (=worst) States for that – Iowa and Missouri – and Kentucky is a second-level State. So anything is possible, especially if you got no “papers”.
However, most of the alleged “wolf-dogs” have such a low content of wolf genes that it is effectively non-existent, and those dogs are sold at inflated prices to attract the macho suckers who think that having a tame “wolf” makes them special. If you still think he has significant wolf content once he is adult, send photos to the member of my groups who runs a wolf-dog sanctuary (no, HER stock is not for sale!).

Your description of him as having a narrow face indicates that he is probably of All-American lines, especially the deviations we sneeringly refer to as “NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs” and “Coyote Dogs”. A genuine wolf has a POWERFUL head, not a refined one. The skull, and especially the jaws and the size of the teeth, is one of the most useful ways to distinguish between a wolf and a domestic dog.

The barking indicates that you should not have accepted him – it’s an indication of fear, and trying to make you go away and stop scaring him. He goes to the GR for protection. You will need to do a LOT of reward-based training and a LOT of quiet on-lead socialisation to get him used to the wider world, but until 2 weeks after his 16 weeks booster shots keep him away from places where dogs piddle/poo/vomit.

All correctly-coated, correctly-eared, correctly-proportioned GSDs – especially the gray-sable GSDs – resemble wolves. Not surprising – the main foundation stud (born 1896) had a wolf or a wolf-cross as his grandmother, and the sables in our breed are the result of the A^w (wolf-sable) pattern allele, not of the A^y (yellow-brown sable) pattern allele found in such as Collies and American Cockers.

To get knowledgeable information about GSDs you should be a member of your nearest GSD club plus a couple of the 300+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. The groups make it easy for you to show people photos of your pet.

“lilcslil…”:
I can guarantee that your aunt’s pooch had almost no wolf genes. Wolf attitudes and behaviours are NOT suitable for a household pet. The yellow eyes are characteristic of certain genes for coat-colour; most probably he was d^ d^ in the Dilute gene series, which produces a coat effect referred to as “blue”, and is accompanied by light eyes plus gray eye-rims, gray nose & lips, and gray pads.

Black Lab German Shepherd Mix Puppy

Why is my dog scary?

I don’t mean to sound racist, but every black person I have ran into while running with my dog, freaks out.

Why is this?

It has happened all but two times. At least 45-50 times.
Is there something I can do to make my puppy look more friendly?

He is a husky/lab/german shepherd mix.
He is very nice and cute.
he’s about 60 lbs and his shoulders are 23in. high.

This is not a raciest statement, if you take it that way it’s your problem, but black people are generally afraid of any dog that bigger than a Chihuahua or is there own “tough” Pitbulls. I have had them move away wide eyed when my very people friendly, fluffy Collie mix comes up and sits in front of them, wagging his tail. A bunny looks more threatening than that, but they still acted as though I could barely hold him back as he lunges for their jugular. By the way, this is in a PET store. I rarely come across one that is not afraid of them.

Also, just cause I think it’s funny, my brother’s Doberman loved to chase things, that’s why ball was her favorite game, but it;s also why she LOVED black people. They would always run from her before she did anything and she’d have fun chasing them. Never hurt one, just chased them.

But anyways, the point is, don’t worry about how they react. If they feel somehow they need to be scared of your dog, then let them be. It’s not as though he is doing anything wrong and aggressive.

My puppy stinks even after his bath, is there anything I can use to help with this?

I have an 11 month old black lab german shepherd mix (and some other breeds haha he’s a pound pup). He’s both indoor and outdoor- mostly indoor. Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love him to death, but he smells awful all the time: even after he’s been thoroughly bathed. Is there anything I can bathe him with or use on him that will get rid of the smell? Household items would be fabulous, but I can also go out and buy something (if it is a reasonable price) if need be.
Thanks in advance for any help provided (:
God Bless.
We bathe him about once a month. (:
I don’t think it is a health problem, he just smells like a wet, sweaty pup.

A 50/50 vinegar water rinse after shampooing. Just mix 50% apple cider vinegar with 50% water. He’s gonna smell like a pickle for a bit, but it goes away in a couple of hours. It helps get the dirt off of his skin. Also, use a better quality shampoo, not the stuff you buy at the supermarket
