How much do baby German Shepherds cost? Anyone know?

Well bred pet quality from reputable breeder: $800+
Well bred show potential from reputable breeder: $1,000+
Well bred animal to be used for schutzhund work: $1,500+

I’ve seen them go for more, too. The cost is NOT counting any supplies, vet care, training, etc.

Puppy Housebreaking Does not Have to be All That Hard

Puppy Housebreaking / Housetraining Procedures and Methods

Puppy housebreaking should start just as soon as you bring your new puppy home – and it is the best way to teach your purebred puppy to go outside when it has to relieve itself. How long does it take to do puppy housetraining?

The easiest answer is: as long as puppy housebreaking takes. I had one German Shepherd puppy that housetrained herself pretty much in just over 3 days, and I have had others that took closer to 2 weeks.

All puppies and breeds of puppies are different and not all can be housetrained in the same amount of time. Housebreaking can easily vary from puppy to puppy.

Additionally, keep in mind that eventhough this article deals primarily with purebred puppies (due to the focus of this web site) that many of these housetraining techniques can also be used with most any other puppy breeds- pure or mixed breed.

When you get your new puppy home the first day, start puppy housebreaking him /her immediately. After he has been briefly introduced to his home and new surroundings, give him a drink of water and immediately take him outside to relieve himself. Take the puppy to the housebreaking area that you chose before bringing him home.

Remember, choice of this housebreaking spot is crucial as it enhances the housetraining – so take careful consideration of where “the housebreaking spot” is before bringing your purebred puppy home. This is the spot where you want the puppy “to go”.

There is a direct correlation between the time you actually put into the puppy housebreaking process and the speed in which the housebreaking of the puppy successfully occurs.

This is a very crucial puppy housebreaking step so be patient and wait until the puppy relieves himself. It may take a while especially with all the new things happening to your new puppy, all the new smells, unfamiliar objects, etc. Do not play with the puppy however until after it has “done it’s business”. If you do it may make the puppy forget about going at all. Since housebreaking is all new to the pure bred puppy it doesn’t know what it’s purpose of being in “the housebreaking spot” is in the first place.

As soon as your puppy finishes, praise it excitedly and immediately take him inside. From that point on, take the puppy to the same housebreaking spot each time and encourage him with a command such as “go potty”, “hurry up” or whatever you choose.

Be consistent using this single command only with the process of puppy housebreaking so that the puppy will learn to associate this act with the command. This will be a huge help in the future, especially when in a new environment or location when traveling, visiting relatives/friends, etc. Being completely housebroken and completely reliable is the final outcome you are looking for.

You must watch them like a hawk at all times – in the beginning of housebreaking especially. If you can not keep an eye on your purebred puppy for some reason please put them in a safe and secure puppy proofed spot (such as a crate or some other small room with easy to clean floors, such as linoleum, closed off with a baby gate so you can peek in as needed). If you are consistent in your puppy housebreaking in the very beginning, ESPECIALLY when it is inconvenient to you (late at night, while you are watching your favorite TV show, etc.), you will actually help the new puppy housebreak itself to alert you when it “has to go”.

A puppy should be taken out immediately (to a prearranged housebreaking area outside): when it wakes up first thing in the morning (before if you manage to get up before the puppy),

after each and every meal,

after each and every nap,

and again before he goes to bed for the night.

Another good housebreaking tip is to take up the puppies water early in the evening and to not feed or water it after say, 6:00 at night, otherwise you may have to make more housebreaking potty trips than usual outside to let the puppy relieve itself. Keep the puppy on a strict housebreaking schedule, both feeding and elimination, and you will have puppy housebreaking success much sooner.

More Puppy Housebreaking and Housetraining Secrets: From Housebreaking to Housebroken

Know in advance that a very young puppy will probably not be able to go through the night without relieving itself so get used to taking it out during the middle of the night until it grows enough to sleep through the night.

You wouldn’t expect a young human baby to be toilet trained in a week, would you? Give the same consideration to your new purebred puppy. He will not be able to be considered reliable as far as housebreaking goes either after only a few days.

The puppy is a baby with a small bladder and weak sphincter muscles. Like human babies, your new puppy will be able to go longer between housebreaking breaks as it grows older and will soon become completely housebroken if your are vigilant in the housebreaking process.

Oops… found a mistake, now what?

If you find your puppy has made a mistake in the house and you did not catch it in the act, simply clean the spot without comment. Clean up all residue and clean the area with a bacteria/enzyme digester. These housetraining aids are available at your pet supply or grocery store. This will get rid of both the stain and the smell. And the smell is the most important part to get rid of. Even if you can’t smell the urine, believe me, your puppy can and he will be encouraged to go back to the same spot again unless you remove ALL urine odors. This is absolutely critical in housebreaking your puppy.

If you find the puppy “in the act”, scoop him up as quickly as possible with his tail between his legs (to help prevent spillage) and take him out asap. Say “out” or “quick” as you take him out but never NO. Since No is used for negative things you do not want your puppy to think that eliminating is wrong, no matter where he does it.

If the new puppy thinks that eliminating is bad he will probably start hiding it from you and you do not want that to happen. That is a whole other behavioral issue to contend with and believe me it’s much better and easier to prevent behavioral problems before they happen than having to deal with them later.

Generally speaking, most puppies are naturally clean dogs – assuming they had the right start clear from the beginning. Puppies raised in small runs or cages develop dirty habits right from the beginning making housebreaking harder. Since they are used to playing and sleeping in their own excrement they will not have any problem with continuing to do so. This is not the puppy’s fault, it’s just what they were accustomed to from an early age.

Keep in mind, housebreaking puppies raised in these type of situations can be much harder and more time consuming than usual but housetraining can still can be done.

Overall, puppy housebreaking problems are often more of a human problem than a puppy problem. If the new owner is steadfast in keeping a watch on the purebred puppy in the beginning of ownership, especially during the first 2 weeks of housetraining, then puppy housebreaking can accomplished and the new puppy will become a reliable member of the family as far as bathroom visits are concerned, and will soon be completely housebroken.

Remember, as the new owner you must be patient with the entire housebreaking process. Each puppy will housetrain at his own speed and with your help. Take him out religiously as outlined above, and keep him on a strict feeding/bathroom housebreaking schedule (as well as anytime the GSD puppy acts as though he has to “go out”). It is very important that you learn to read your puppies potty signals during the housebreaking process: sniffing out “a spot”, circling, whining, going to the door, etc.

Finally, think about how you would like to be housetrained if you were in the puppies place? The puppy won’t enjoy being yelled at, jerked around or frightened any better than you would. A kinder, gentler and more patient puppy housebreaking approach will yield much better results, help your bond with your new puppy and develop a more confident housebroken dog. And isn’t that what we all want as purebred dog owners in the first place?

can german shepherds have bushy curled up tails?

our german shepherd cross is now 10 months but as he is getting older and looking at 2 other dogs from the litter growing up they are looking so much like full german shepherds now, george is the only one who is a sandy colour,he was pure white when he was born but is now apparently the colour of a silver back german shepherd,he has a bushy tail that curls up and is long haired..a breeder of 35 years stopped me in a dog store and asked me where i got my dog from as for a german shepherd he is a very rare colour,i told her he was a GS cross but she was 100% sure he wasn’t a cross..the father to us was unknown, the mum a thoroughbred GS..it doesn’t matter what he is we love him all the same it would just be nice to know to know his breed history..

Dog Breeds – 6 Rare Precious Breed On Hold!

Dogs come in many shapes and sizes. They are one of the varied species on the planet. All these different kinds of dog originated from the wolf. It is almost impossible to believe it but the Pekinese is more closely related to the wolf than is the German Shepherd.

This great variety of dogs results from selective breeding over millenia. For centuries human beings have been chosing those characteristics in dogs that they found desirable for some reason. Dogs have been selected for their small size so that they fit down badger hole or make lap dogs. They have been selected for their large size so that they can act as guard dogs and shepherd dogs. They have been selected for thick coats in cold climates or to be almost hairless.

The dog is one of the oldest of domesticated animals and over the many centuries that they have lived and worked with humans they have played many roles. Consequently, there are innumerable breeds of dog. They have been bred to meet the requirements of different occupations and to meet the aesthetic standards of different societies.

Often toy breeds have been developed from working dogs. The Affenpinscher is an example of this. It is a toy version of the pinscher and schnauzer family. It makes a good family pet because of its affectionate nature. This is a highly intelligent dog that is highly trainable. The coat is wiry and ususally dark in color.

The Anatolian Shepherd is less well known than the familar German Shepherd. But its strong build and courageous nature makes it an ideal security or hunting dog.

The Basenji or African Hunting Dog is a silent dog. It has been bred to have no bark so that it does not disturb game. It is not a particularly affectionate animal but will become accustomed to people if handled from an early age.

A very different kind of dog is the Bouvier des Flandres. This dog was bred as a herd dog in France. It looks somewhat like a terrier. But it has a placed nature. The coat is rough and usually dark in color. They are often used in police work or as a guide dog for the visually impaired. They are intelligent and respond well to training.

The Ovtcharka from Central Asia is a large dog that has been used for herding. It has a fearless nature and is very brave. They ususally have their ears and tails docked when they are puppies.

From Poland comes the Owczarek Nizinny which is a medium sized dog. Its coat is long and often covers its eyes. They make excellent pets but hate to be left alone for long as they are very social.

German Shepherd Golden Retriever Puppies

german shepherd golden retriever puppies
If I want a german shepherd and a golden retriever to be 1yr apart, which dog should I get first?

I would like to get a german shepherd and a golden retriever, but I do not know if these breeds would even get along. If they can live together, which puppy should I get first? Should the german shepherd grow up with the retriever or vice versa? I have had a GR before and she was the love of my life, but I am looking for a guard dog so that’s why I figured a GR and GSD would be the perfect match for me, I’m just not sure they’d be a match for each other. Any opinions would be much appreciated, thanks!

Both are lovely breeds. I would suggest getting the GR first. You can raise it and then it will help you teach and raise your GSD. As GRs are more gentle it will be an excellent role model for your new GSD. Plus, the idea of a hyper 1 year old GSD and then a hyper GR puppy may be a little too much!
They’ll get on fine, don’t worry about that, just choose their personailities carefully. For example, if you get a dominant male GR, don’t get a dominant male GSD or they’ll wear you out with their squabbles! I would recommend a Male GR and a female GSD. That will give you the greatest opportunity for them to settle and enjoy each other’s company.

Puppy Training Housebreaking The Right Way!

Two purebred dogs are sometimes deliberately crossed in hopes of creating a new breed such as the cockapoo, which is one part cocker spaniel, one part poodle.

If you can’t decide between a shepherd, a setter or a poodle, get them all adopt a mutt.

Puppy Training Housebreaking protect your flooring investment

This is the list of dog Herding Breeds according to The American Kennel Club:Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old, English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Swedish Vallhund.

Made up of guardians of livestock and property, police dogs, sled dogs and rescue dogs, these workers come in all shapes and sizes, from the standard schnauzer to the Great Dane. Too large to go to ground, the popular Airedale terrier puts its strength and stubborn streak to use as a surprisingly ferocious watchdog. The world’s most popular breed of dog is no breed at all.

Some sporting dog breeds you might consider in buying include the American Cocker Spaniel, American Water Spaniel, Brittany, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Clumber Spaniel, Curly-Coated Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, English Setter, English Springer Spaniel, Field Spaniel, Flat-Coated Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter, Irish Setter, Irish Water Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Pointer, Spinone Italiano, Sussex Spaniel, Vizsla, Weimaraner, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Terrier dog breeds. But for the most part, these are large, powerful dogs. Today the slow, prodding bloodhound is usually used by law enforcement to track renegades or missing persons.

When these dogs bite, they don’t let go. These fiery little dynamos would dig up underground dens and burrows while barking furiously, forcing the inhabitants out where hunters awaited. Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a well-liked family pet. But without the right training and socialization, and in irresponsible hands, these can be dangerous dogs.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE

—————————————

Teeth. Wolves have remarkably thick, two-layered coats to protect them from extreme weather. Pendant Ears. Canids, including domestic dogs, have 42 teeth, although there are a few exceptions:The bat-eared fox has 48. Most hound dogs feature hanging or pendant ears, while many terriers have semi-erect button ears in which the tips fold over and hang in a V-shape, partially covering the opening.

They – and a large common pad in the center – act as shock absorbers. Don’t limit yourself in only considering its breed. Among the most common varieties are the erect or pricked ears sported by many of the more wolf-like breeds, such as German shepherd and basenjis, and by semi-domestic canids, such as dingoes and New Guinea singing dogs. Other breeds such as German shepherds and golden retrievers have been trained to detect hidden drugs, explosives, and even termites. Such hot-weather species as the fennec fox, a tiny African desert dweller, sports over sized ears to maximize heat loss.

German Shepherd Large Bone

German shepherd pup very protective over a bone??

I have recently bought a german shepherd pup. He has a lovely temperment. I have been training him the basics such as sit/come and walking on a lead. I have also been training him to wait for his food until I tell him to eat. Today I feed him and then gave him a large bone with a few scraps of meat on it. He was very defensive of it such that when i tried to give him a pet as i was leaving he was snarling at me. What do you do about this? I obviously need to nip this real quick. He is 12 weeks old.

Yes, you need to nip this in the bud! Take the bone away from him when he snarls and carries on. He needs to know that you are the one in control of the food and treats. Make him learn that you can touch him when he has a treat. I would hold one end of the bone and allow him to chew on the other end as long as he will let you touch him. Dominate dogs will do this with a puppy and if the puppy gets too pushy they will growl and take the bone and walk off with it. You are the dominate dog, show the puppy!

Panosteitis Dog Bone Disease

As dog grows, owners should specifically observe some changes and possible diseases that may occur in their fast growing dogs. One of most common sign is limping, and it can be caused by several problems associated with bones and bone growth. One of most common dog bone disease is Panosteitis or “Pano”. Panosteitis is also referred to as growing pains and wandering leg lameness. This lameness can last a day to a few weeks. Pano is characterized by shifting leg lameness; one leg will heal, then another may be affected. There are no long-term ill-effects from pano, but still needs enough attention and proper petsafe and care to prevent such diseases.

Panosteitis is commonly associated with large breed dogs and usually occurs in dogs 5 to 12 months of age, although it has been found in dogs as old as 5 years. Pano most commonly affects males by a ratio of 4:1. Females are most often affected around their first heat. These disease can be considered partially genetic since so many German Shepherd Dogs are prone to it. However, many other factors have been associated with pano: diet, viral diseases, autoimmune problems, hyperestrogen, and vascular problems. Other possible causes include nutritional derangements, immunologic disease, metabolic disease, and other viruses. In other words, no one knows what causes it. Some clinical signs were long bone pain, shifting leg lameness, fever, anorexia, lethargy. The common symptoms of Pano are Lameness that may shift from limb to limb, pain, fever, and loss of appetite.

Like many problems, pano may be difficult to diagnose. The dark patches may not appear on the x-rays. The lameness may not shift to another leg. It can be extremely frustrating with many bouts of radiographs. Assuming that the limping is caused by pano can help delay diagnosis of other more severe problems. Never assume that limping is caused by pano without having it properly diagnosed. This can be very scary to an owner who up until this point has had an agile giant puppy who loves to lope about the house at a full run! Pano is an inflammation of the bone itself and through radiographs (x-rays) a vet can often determine if this is indeed the problem a dog is experiencing. The dog normally limps on the affected limb and only rarely holds the limb to prevent any weight from being placed on it. It is often easily diagnosed with an x-ray; the lesion shows as the tell-tale dark patch on the bone. Pressure applied on the bone elicits a pain response. Currently, treatment consists of reduction of the percentage of protein in the dog’s diet and pain management through the use of buffered aspirin, Ascriptin, or Rimadyl, or steroids in severe cases. Restricting the dog’s activity has not been shown to have an effect on the healing process. Panosteitis is treated symptomatically. Rest on comfortable dog crates, exercise restriction, and pain medication are prescribed. Pain medication is usually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, such as aspirin, etodolac, or carprofen. Rarely, severely affected dogs may need more potent pain relief such as narcotic drugs.

Panosteitis is treated symptomatically. Rest, exercise restriction, and pain medication are prescribed. Pain medication is usually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, such as aspirin, etodolac, or carprofen. Rarely, severely affected dogs may need more potent pain relief such as narcotic drugs. Currently, a common rumor is that low protein, low calcium diets may prevent this condition. It should be noted that the energy level of low protein/calcium diets is often lower as well. If this is the case, a puppy will eat much more of the diet in order to meet its energy needs, resulting in higher total calcium consumption. It may be preferable to feed a puppy diet and restrict total quantity to keep the dog lean than to use a low protein/low calcium adult dog food. Some vets recommend supplementing dogs with high doses of MSM, glucosamine and vitamin C, others provide anti-inflammatories to keep them comfortable. Whatever route you go, keep exercise to a minimum and know that if it is indeed Pano, your dog will grow out of it and will soon be back to his limber self again! Because of the potential genetic link, breeding animals should be screened to ensure that they are not potential carriers of the disease. Despite the numerous puppy foods catering to large breed dogs, there is no current evidence that confirms that these foods will lower the incidence of the disease when compared to standard commercial puppy food. If an animal shows symptoms of the disease, they should be promptly diagnosed and treated and exercise and activity should be reduced until the symptoms have gone away.

There is also known method of preventing Panosteitis; however, many veterinarians believe the disease is made worse by calorie-dense diets and over-supplementation with calcium and phosphorus. Thus, a diet change to an adult formula, or a large breed growth formula, is recommended. The dog should be fed an amount that does not promote obesity or overly rapid growth. Calcium and vitamin supplements should also be avoided.

Does My Dog Have Hyperthyroidism?

If you are a dog owner, you want to make sure that you know about the different medical ills that might befall your beloved canine companion, and one of the issues that might crop up is hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that is relatively common in dogs, and it occurs due to the thyroid gland under-producing the hormones that are responsible for healthy metabolism. There are many factors that can point to hyperthyroidism in dogs and if you find that this might be a situation that your dog is encountering, there re a number of things that you need to do.

The first thing that you need to figure out is whether your dog is at risk for hyperthyroidism. For instance, you will find that the condition is most common in dogs that are roughly between the ages of four years of age to ten years. The disorder is also one that seems to strike at mid-size dogs to dogs that are larger size. The condition is fairly rare in smaller breeds and you will find that there are some breeds that are more prone to the condition than others. For instance, Irish Setters, Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and Airedale Terriers are all dogs that are prone to this condition, while German Shepherds and mixed breeds are more likely to avoid the issues with this condition.

How can you tell if your dog might be suffering from hyperthyroidism? Because thyroid hormones are an essential part of cellular metabolic function, a decrease in those hormones can affect your dog’s health on a fairly large scale. The symptoms can vary from animal to animal and though there is no single sure sign of this condition, there are a family of symptoms which can make the condition known. Some of the common symptoms that make a diagnosis for hyperthyroidism likely include hair loss, sudden weight gain, dry coat, cold intolerance or a slow heart rate.

Depending on the symptoms that are present and the different tests that your veterinarian prefers, there are a number of ways to test for this condition. The Baseline T4 Test is the most common, and it is essentially done from a blood sample, while the Baseline T3 test can be used in conjunction with a TSH test. When looking at treatment for this condition, the typical and highly effective treatment is to place the dog on a synthetic thyroid hormone called thyroxine. The dog will be on this hormone for the rest of his life, though the dose and the frequency might vary depending on the dog’s response and healthy. For the most part, after treatment is started, the symptoms will disappear.

Take some time and make sure that you consider what your options are going to be and what you can do to make sure that you can get the right kind of result from your pet. Keep an eye on your pet’s health and if he starts evidencing any of the symptoms that are associated with this condition, consult your veterinarian to see what they might say.

Break the Stereotypes About Dogs

Many of the stories you’ve heard about particular breeds of dogs are just myths. Take the American Pit Bull Terrier (Pit Bull), for example. Do you think they’re vicious, or killers? If so, you’re not alone; many countries have restrictive laws about breeding and muzzling these dogs. But this story is the result of history.

The Pit Bull, a cross between the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the fighting Bulldog, was specifically bred in the 1800s to be the ultimate breed for dog fighting. They are designed to be aggressive and downright mean, so many are dangerous – but in the right circumstances, so are all animals. As long as you raise a Pit Bull with the proper training, your dog, despite its reputation, will be no more dangerous than any other. Remember, though, that these often require specific handling in capable hands, so they are not the right choice for everyone.

English Mastiffs are another vilified breed. They have strong teeth and jaws, but they won’t necessarily bite you. These are some of the world’s largest dogs, so their owners need to be both strong and experienced: they can be stubborn and might overpower someone small. But these dogs actually make great pets, as long as you give them ample room to run – so they aren’t a good choice for apartment dwellers.

The bullmastiff is slightly smaller but more active and faster, so these dogs still need an experienced handler. They can be somewhat aloof and aggressive toward other males. They were bred to help gamekeepers, chasing and trapping intruders, so they make great guard dogs – but they can sometimes be overprotective of their families and resist obedience classes.

The biggest problem with German Shepherds is that they have been irresponsibly bred because of their popularity. This has led to increase health problems, like arthritis, eye disease, and digestive disorders. These dogs have also become nervous, timid, or aggressive around other dogs. As long as you choose a careful breeder, these dogs make great pets because they are calm, trustworthy, and obedient.

Doberman Pinschers, or Dobermans, are military dogs that were bred from the Rottweiler, German Pinscher, Manchester Terrier, English Greyhound, and Weimaraner. They are very intelligent and quick, but irresponsible breeding has tarnished their reputations by producing nervous dogs that are sometimes unfriendly and may bite. Heart disease is another problem. But dogs from a respected breeder are likely to be obedient, observant, and clever companions, especially with early training. Just like all animals, however, you should not leave animals or young children alone with Dobermans.

There are two common types of Rottweilers: American and German. The Rottweiler, bred to drive cattle and be a guard dog, is another example of how poor breeding can be corruptive: behavioral problems have become more common. They are strong-willed and smart, so they are best suited to owners who are committed and active – especially because these strong dogs need so much exercise. They love attention, and will make spectacular family pets or guard dogs, because they are aloof toward strangers and protect their territory.

Have you heard that your dog will “turn on you” if you feed him raw meat? This is a myth. A bone with some raw meat can be an occasional treat for your pet, but your dog may be possessive. Just remember to let your dog know that this behavior is unacceptable: do not growl at or threaten your dog; just stand up slowly. Also, don’t mistake your dog’s playful behavior for aggression.

Another myth is that dogs and cats will never get along. This is not always true, because it depends on the individual characteristics of the animals. Some dogs love cats, some cats love dogs, some dogs hate cats, some cats hate dogs, some dogs hate dogs, some cats hate cats, some dogs don’t even know they are dogs – and so forth.

I love them all…but whos best?

lol Dogs of course. SO im getting a puppy but idk what kind yet. im moving into a dog frieendly apartment and will have lots of time for play training and exercise.I want a bigger dog. Ive narrowed it down to:
Great Dane
Boxer
German Shepherd (which i already have one)
Bloodhound
I just can’t decide
oh and hopefully you can give me a reputable breeder and price range
I Live in Louisville KY

Instead of a breeder and paying lots of money, why not visit your local shelter. There are lots of purebred dogs in shelters – now more than ever with people having to surrender their dogs because they can’t afford them in this down turn economy. You may easily find a German Shepherd, or Boxer and it would be a dog in need of a good home. You can interact with the dog at the shelter and bring your current dog with you to ensure that he will like the new family member. They have puppies and adults and lots to choose from. Please visit your shelter and adopt.

German Shepherd Blue Heeler Mix Puppies

german shepherd blue heeler mix puppies
Can my 2 month puppy get big even though his paws arent the biggest ?

I think my puppy is a Rottweiler mix but not sure .
He has the markings of one . When I got him at Feeers Supply they said that he was Blue Heeler and Jack Russell mix . But when I took him to the vet they said that he wasnt a blue heeler nor jack russell . He looked at his teeth and he went to ask more vets and he said what he heard the most was that he was Rottweiler and German Shepherd mix . What do do ? He dont look like a blue heeler or jack russell . He looks more like a rottweiler .

There’s nothing you can do other than love your dog for whatever size it is. I would believe your vet over the “feeers supply” (I am not sure whether that is a store or what). To answer your question yes he can get big even if his paws aren’t big. His whole body is going to grow.

german shepherd blue heeler mix puppies
My puppy was attacked by a pack of dogs! Help!?

My 6 month old Blue Heeler puppy attacked today by my neighbors 4 dogs. They are German Shepherd mixes and a Great Pyrenees. They almost ripped my puppy’s leg off and would have killed him if my son hadn’t seen them and stopped it. So my pup is at the vet till Tuesday. He has lost alot of blood and his right hind leg is badly ripped. Why would they come on our property and attack a puppy like that? We have alot of acreage and my pup stays on our property. How can I help him when he comes home? I’m sure he’s terrified. Will this damage him mentally? What can I do to keep those dogs away? We live in the county and only the city has animal control. Please give me advice.
He’s at the vet now. I rushed him there. They said he would stay there until at least Tuesday.
He has a 10×10 kennel he stays in when we go to town.

4 dogs attacked him? He is a lucky dog indeed. Poor pup.

How can I help him when he comes home?
—- After he’s healed, bring larger calm, FRIENDLY dogs over to meet him. He needs good dog interaction. Don’t force it on him, but allow him to sniff them behind a baby gate. Don’t coddle him or baby him or comfort him. Be calm and confident. He’ll take his cue from you. Tell him he’s fine, relax, get over it, whatever it takes to help you be calm.

Will this damage him mentally?
—- You know, this sounded like a very bad attack. He will in all likelihood be afraid of dogs, unless you rehab him slowly and calmly with some patient, older calm dogs.

What can I do to keep those dogs away?
—– Get a fenced yard for to keep the dogs out and your dog in. Get a small run if can’t afford fencing for a yard. These dogs might come around again. Tell you neighbors what happened, and tell your local police if you need to.

Please give me advice.
—— Do not ever let him out unless he is on leash with you.

Good luck.

German Shepherd Mating

PEOPLE WHO HAVE/HAD A GERMAN SHEPHERD. Should i get one?

I love dogs. I love german shepherds, my mate had one and i really wanted on since then but how are they to look after since iv never had one and don’t know.

They are considered among the three most intelligent dogs. The other two are Poodles and Border Collies.

They are very loyal ONE OWNER dogs. This is probably the reason they also have the highest bite rate / attacks among all breeds and this includes Pit Bulls. Got insurance?

And, as already noted, they are prone to hip dysplasia. Such problems are not rare in any purebred: 1 in 4 purebred dogs in the US has a genetic disorder that will manifest itself sooner………..or later.

Ask a vet what the best dog is and they will tell you a shelter mutt………unless you walk into the office with a purebred.

The Top 10 Dog Breeds and Their Most Common Traits

A dog can be man’s best friend or his worst nightmare! Every year dogs are given back to the breeders, or handed over to animal rescue centers because the owner just couldn’t cope…

It’s true – a dog is for life – and it can sometimes be a handful, but there is a way to make sure that you have the best possible relationship with your doggy companion. All you need to do is a little research and a little thinking.

Dogs have different personalities, and these will be shaped to some extent to by you and the environment you create for you puppy. But you can predict the in-born personality of a dog (to some extent) by looking at the common traits of each dog breed. The bottom line is that you can minimize any trouble, by simply taking the time to choose a dog breed that suits your personality and your lifestyle.

Here are the top 10 dog breeds (by popularity) and their most common traits to help you decide what type of dog is the best for you:

1.Labrador Retriever.

Labradors are intelligent and family friendly dogs of medium size. They are arguably the most popular dog breed in the world and it’s no wonder. Labrador retrievers are the perfect dog for families with small children. They are not overly sensitive or moody and they love being around young children.

If you’re the type who’s into loving dogs, choose a Lab retriever. If you have a family with young children – this may be your best bet.

2.Yorkshire Terrier.

Affectionately known as Yorkies, they are small dogs but with big personalities. They are considered to be a “Toy Breed” but they are terriers – so they are still brave and energetic.

Yorkies are beautiful, but can be high-maintenance, mainly due to their appearance. They’re very independent and very smart. But they will need your daily attention – so if you are the type who has a lot of time in his hands, Yorkies would be perfect for you.

3. German Shepherd.

German Shepherds are medium sized herding dogs. They are mainly used in police trainings and obedience schools, as they are highly intelligent, and have well developed guarding instincts.

This breed is extremely loyal and very protective. German Shepherds are highly active dogs and would require larger spaces to live and for exercises. Also – because they are highly intelligent, you would not have any difficulties in training them. If you want your own watchdog, your best bet is to buy a German Shepherd.

4. Golden Retriever.

Same as a labrador retriever, this breed is one of the friendliest, if not THE friendliest, around. Affable and good-natured are the best descriptions for this type of dog that’s why children tend to like Golden Retrievers the most among all breeds. However, they are poor guard dogs because they can be very sociable even to strangers.

5. Beagles.

Beagles are scent hounds. Medium-sized and low-maintenance, they can make a perfect house pet.

They love to bark and howl so you have to think twice if you live in a small apartment. They are neither too aggressive nor too friendly. But once you get their trust, Beagles can be one of the most loving breeds. Just remember, that like all dogs, Beagles are pack animals so they should not be left alone for too long or they will suffer from separation anxiety.

6. Boxers.

This breed is usually entered in show dog contests because of its stature and physique. Boxers are alert and sporty, and are excellent as companions or guard dogs. Despite its intimidating appearance, boxers are one of the friendliest dog breeds especially with children. Boxers love to be around with people whom they trust.

Choose this breed if you have an already existing active lifestyle, where you can afford to take your dog out to exercise at least 1 to 2 times a day.

7. Dachshunds.

This breed is also known as “wiener” dogs because of its similarity to a hotdog in regards to its shape. Don’t be deceived by its appearance though – dachshunds can make a terrific watchdog. Small but brave – that’s the perfect way to describe this breed.

Dachshunds in general are active dogs – hunters. They love to chase anything that moves so you have to keep up if you want to own one. They’re very lively and will even challenge any dog twice their size. There would never be a dull moment if you live with a dachshund.

8. Poodles.

Because of their appearance (their curly coat to be precise), poodles are regarded as high-maintenance breeds. But this is a perfect example of never judging a book by its cover, or in this case, by its coat.

Poodles are one of the MOST intelligent breeds. They’re easy to train, agile and very perceptive. But they also get bored easily, so they often find themselves in trouble. Poodles are one of the only dog breeds that come in all three sizes – small, medium, and large – so you can take your pick.

Poodles make for good companions, but are not excellent with small kids, so make sure you pick the right one…

9. Shih Tzus.

They are small and compact, and fearless (as their name suggests – Shih Tzu = lion). Shih Tzus combine bravery and beauty, which usually means that you have to have a lifestyle which allows you to spend time daily not only walking him, but to groom them. Their long flowing coats usually need daily attention.

They are playful, active and clever. However, they are very difficult to housebreak – so it’s likely you’d need extra bit of patience and time with them.

10. Bulldogs.

Bulldogs are stocky and medium sized dogs. They are not usually perceived as lapdogs (and with their physical disposition who would) – but they would like to be… Their somewhat grumpy expression, may make you think that they are moody and hard to deal with, but you wouldn’t be further from the truth.

Bulldogs are very lovable and friendly, albeit with a bit of stubborn streak. They’re good with children and get along well with other pets. So if you have a cat at home, bulldog might be the perfect companion not just for you, but for your cat too.

At the end of the day, selecting the best breed for your personality and lifestyle is like choosing a mate – you have to match or things will be difficult. Please don’t be tempted to buy a puppy just because it looks cute – do him and yourself a huge favor and learn a little about each dog breed.

If you’re an active person – choose an active agile dog. If you spend your days in front of the TV – get off your but and exercise… OK – I’m kidding… If your lifestyle is filled with long work days, or too much leisure time, get a pooch that doesn’t need too much attention or exercise (although all dogs need attention – so if you are too busy to give it to them, rather consider a cat).

German Shepherd Kentucky

Planning vacation.Taking 2 german shepherds along.?

I’ve checked bsls in all states we’ll go thru and it looks like Kentucky and Louisiana may be problem areas for us.
Can anyone from these 2 states, especially from Louisville,Ky and New Orleans and Baton Rogue, La. advise me on specific bsls these cities may have?
Dogs are not viscious but are protective. They go off something horrible if someone so much as evan looks at their truck. And I don’t want some trigger happy cop shooting them because they felt threatened by a stranger.
Also are there dog parks in these 2 areas where they can run off-leash?

I have a pit bull and I used to drive a semi. As long as you have your dog on the leash and proper paper work (carry their vaccination papers with you) You will have not trouble at all. As far as dog parks they are far few and in between. I used to find an open field for mine to run in. Such as if you stop at a rest area go to area where you and your dogs will not be interrupted by other people or dogs. Most rest areas are vacant except for truck traffic. Make sure you take a leash with you when you cut them loose so you can quickly restrain them if need be. If a cop walks up and tells you have to put them on a leash then do so and politely tell them your not from the area and didn’t know. Most will just say “you have now been warned”. If you are pulled over announce that you have German Sheppard’s with you and they are not friendly with strangers. I hope this helps and happy travels.

The Fell Pony Breed Review

History

The Fell Pony gets its name, FELL, from the Norse word meaning “hill.” During the four centuries of Roman occupation on the border between England and Scotland, extra troops – French, Dutch, German, Polish, Spanish and eastern European cavalrymen — were brought in to protect Hadrian’s Wall which separated the countries and to maintain law and order. Since bones of foreign horses have been found in Northern Britain, its thought that the Fell pony may be a mixture of these horses and local ponies. A cross between foreign horses and the Celtic pony might have produced an animal closer to horse size, but larger animals couldn’t have survived in the northern fells without extra food. It’s believed that the breed stabilized through natural selection as a pony.

After the Romans withdrew there weren’t many roads until the 18th century. Fell ponies were used to transport goods throughout the country. As canals, roadways and train lines were developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, other forms of transport developed and Fell ponies were used for light farm work, carrying mail, sports events, shepherding and or carrying goods to market by cart.

Size and Showing Characteristics

The ponies average 13.1 to 13.2 hands high; the maximum height allowed for a Fell pony is 14 hands. Fells come in black, brown, bay and gray. A star and/or white on or below the hind fetlock is acceptable for showing today. Fell ponies are well groomed for shows, yet untrimmed to emphasize their natural looks.

Most Fells mature late, sometimes not until they’re seven years old. In their native country Fell ponies are left to run free until two or three. They’re brought in for basic training and turned out again for another year. They’re started under saddle around five years old. Today Fell ponies are still used for logging, farming, and shepherding. They have been quite successful in competitive endurance at the Olympic level, LeTrec, jumping and dressage and also excel at competitive and pleasure driving, and therapeutic riding.

Preserving the Fell Breed

Sue Millard of England, talked about the importance of unseen traits of a native pony at a rear equine breed event at the Kentucky Horse Park. ” A good example of a native pony should tell us, just by looking at it, what kind of life its ancestors led,” Millard said. “A well built body is the first requirement. Good teeth for grazing and a well designed coat that sheds rain. Hoofs that take the wear of rough terrain. You can see all these. But natives ponies have other qualities: an even sensible temperament, hardiness, vigor, self reliance and brains. These qualities are vital to the breed but they are not visible. They’re the inner pony, the bits that you only get to know by doing the job and living the life. These invisible characteristics can’t be retained without giving the pony a job to do and if possible, allowing it to live and reproduce as its ancestors did and still do.”

For more information on the Fell pony, contact the Fell Pony Society and Conservancy of the Americas, 125 Edwards Farm Lane, Dobson, NC 27017 or at their website at http://www.Fellpony.org. An FPS overseas branch is committed to conserving and promoting the Fell pony as the hill breeders of northern England have done for many centuries.
