german shepherd statues
I have a 7 month old German shepherd who’s destroying everything!?

He can’t come inside the house because my Dad’s allergic and I walk him 3 times a week. What can I do to keep him from messing up the doors, flower pots, statues outside, and trash and he’s digging up the yard really bad.
Is it really a crime to keep a dog, ANIMAL, outside??!!!

Oh my God you’d think I was talking about leaving a human baby outside all day and I do interact with the dog. He’s not just neglected.

You need to walk him every day and not a short walk a long one to tire him out. Play with him as well. He is bored and needs to have you interact with him.

Great Tropical Decorating Ideas

There’s more to tropical decor than a potted palm in a corner. Of course it is an integral part of the theme and can’t be done without. There is however a wide variety to choose from, the most popular being the Kentia Palm, Bamboo Palm, and the Lady Palm, each contributing to a different look by itself and an amazing ambiance in a group.

A tropical decor would call for lush greens and earthy browns, with as many natural products as possible thrown in. There is a kind of sparseness in spite of all the lushness which is what has to be borne in mind throughout. To achieve this remove all rugs, carpets, and throws. The curtains could be replaced with rattan, sisal or bamboo blinds that tame the strong sunshine and lets it enter in muted shades.

Wicker is the furniture of choice, but teak and mahogany or anything that looks similar would do as well. Embellish side tables, sofa tables and occasional tables with baskets, bowls or other objects made of bamboo, sisal, mat, or grass. Artifacts made of copper, brass, and iron lend a touch of panache to an otherwise earthy ambiance. Wrought iron in the form of candle sticks, wall art, or small pieces of furniture works well with the palms gracing a corner.

A large stuffed animal may work for some folks while others may prefer their German shepherd lounging around, for a touch of the majestic. Various ethnic elephant statues in festival finery, cute monkeys, and other animal art is a great way to extend the tropical beyond the ordinary. Wall art could include straw hats, hand held fans of rattan or straw, framed batik prints of tropical flowers such as the hibiscus, or fabulous figures that complement the decor.

A bowl of fruit is a normal occurrence for any kitchen or dining table, but for a tropical look, fill it with a pineapple, pawpaw, and some bananas. If you can lay your hands on an old table fan, set it up on a corner table.

Try combining the tropical beach look with some nautical decor. Substitute the animal theme with the marine. Display a large conch shell or a collection of small shells. White wicker and large blue cushions spell nautical with a capital N. A sailor’s cap or a life belt on the wall leaves no one in doubt as to your intentions. Another interesting display could be of empty liquor bottles of interesting shapes, sizes and colors. So just because you don’t live in the tropics doesn’t mean you have to do without it.

What food is better for a German Shepherd puppy?

We are getting a 6 week old german shepherd and are wondering what food is best out of the 3.
Iams smart puppy proactive health
Purina puppy chow
Pedigree puppy complete nutrition
I found out that they are 7 weeks almost 8

Your future puppy is very lucky to have an owner like you who is so concerned about his health and well-being. Two of my dogs are now Seniors, and even before I worked for the company, they have been eating Iams.

For your large-breed puppy, we do recommend our Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed. Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed is designed specifically for large and giant breed puppies to help manage the growth these puppies generally experience. Nutritionally controlling the growth rate of large and giant breed puppies helps minimize the risk of common bone and joint problems.

Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed contains less fat, lower calories and reduced levels of protein with the proper calcium to phosphorus ratio to better meet the nutritional needs of your large breed puppy.

Additionally, our Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed contains the natural brain-building nutrient DHA, which can help make training your puppies easier.

Good luck with your puppy! He sounds like they he will be in good hands :-)

Harrison K-9s – the Best “homeland Security” Money Can Buy

Ever since 9/11 and the explosive growth of crime in our cities and neighborhoods, concerned and frightened citizens everywhere have been increasingly interested in protecting their property, and more importantly, those they love.

Modern technology has provided an array of solutions however one of the best-kept secrets can be found nestled among 25 acres in Aiken, South Carolina where the ultimate solution for “home-land” security can be found.

It’s called Harrison K-9 Security Services, a provider of the most sophisticated protection dogs in the world!

If you are like most people, your experience with trained dogs is probably limited to seeing them in back of police vehicles, looking menacing while barking uncontrollably.

Actually, military dogs have been used throughout history going back as far as the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Napoleon used them in 1798 to guard the walls of Alexandria, Egypt

In 1884, the German Army established the first organized Military School for training war dogs at Lechernich, near Berlin; and in 1885 wrote the very first training manual for MWD (Military War Dogs).

During the Gulf War, at least 1,177 highly trained German Shepherds were use by the French forces to guard and protect their troops, supplies and aircraft. The USA used 88 teams.

Harrison K-9 Security Services is the brainchild of Harrison Prather who started his own security dog business in 1975 after graduating college and apprenticing with a Master Trainer who specialized in training military and police dogs.

It was there that he realized that a key element of the “dog’s nature” was being ignored. Traditional training focused on the dog’s innate aggressive nature without control. “They naturally have the power,” says Harrison, adding, “What you want is to control that power….power without control is nothing.”

“The type of dog that we produce is a social dog that makes a great family pet but is also taught to defend its handler and its handlers’ family and loved ones with amazing ferocity and courage.”

Seeing is believing so if you really want to understand what Harrison is saying, I urge you to watch the company’s promotional video at www.harrisonk9.com/html/video.cfm

Consequently, that’s one of the things that separate Harrison K-9s from the rest of the industry and has made him one of the oldest and most prestigious Schutzhund or “protection dog” companies in the U.S.

Schutzhund (german for protection dog) is a dog sport that was developed in Germany in the early 1900s to test whether German Shepherd Dogs act and perform in the manner that the breed was intended, rather than simply evaluating a dog’s appearance. Today, many breeds other than German Shepherds can compete in Schutzhund, but it is a demanding test for any dog and few of them can pass this kind of test.

Harrison has been importing his dogs from the same source in Germany for over 15 years now. His supplier/importer has been, on several occasions, the Captain of the German International Team for Schutzhund competition.

When asked what makes his dogs so special and worth the $25,000 to $60,000.00 his clients pay for them, Harrison said, “you can compare them with thoroughbred race horses that are valued by their genetic purity and carefully preserved bloodlines.”

“These superior-bred dogs are handpicked by my supplier in Germany for their pedigree, intelligence, working abilities and temperament and then delivered to me after completing two to three years of foundation training. After that time these same dogs undergo rigorous evaluations and additional proprietary training designed for each individual client’s needs.

Harrison K-9 sells an average of 130 dogs a year; each trained to the specifications and needs of its new owner.

Harrison makes the ultimate decision….determining which dogs go with which clients. “It’s part science and part intuition…an intuition obviously developed as a result of 35 years in the business.”

The process begins with an informal conversation with the client questioning what kind of environment the dog will be in….are there children…security needs…lifestyle (will dog travel, etc.)

Each sale comes with a 60 day guarantee for compatibility and the company will replace the dog for any reason. “The customer is always right,” Harrison proudly stated.

A Harrison K-9’s three months of training is rigorous and extensive simulating real-life situations and taught to bite only on command, even if it’s provoked.

One of Harrison’s secrets is that his staff is almost entirely female to make sure that all dogs can be handled by the client and his or her family.

When each dog is trained and ready, the client can choose to receive their personal instructions in care and handling at the Harrison K-9 facility in Aiken, South Carolina. Or they can have the dog delivered to them along with two trainers who introduce the dog to the new family and teach its members the commands and signals the dog relies on. Every client gets a DVD copy of the care and handling training they receive and the company also offers periodic training if needed to refresh their memory.

Clients come from the U.S., Europe, and Latin America and include a “who’s who” of dignitaries and celebrities, many of whom will never be mentioned by Harrison or any of his workers as anonymity is sacred at Harrison K-9.

When I asked Harrison to “drop a couple of names” of some of the more notable celebrities that have bought dogs from him, he apologized and said that he couldn’t answer me. This is because he promises every client the utmost in anonymity even though he could certainly capitalize financially by using their names in his brochures and other marketing materials.

One typical Harrison K-9 client who has had security problems in the past describes themselves as “recognizable with a high-profile lifestyle.” They’ve opted to forgo armed bodyguards in favor of a pair of Harrison K-9 protection dogs and now have the best of all worlds because in addition to having superior protection, they also have a loving and playful pet for their children and grandchildren.

“Does your security system include unconditional love like mine does?” he jokingly asked.

If the security is an issue of concern for you, your property or family then an executive protection dog must be seriously considered.

In multiple studies and interviews conducted among convicted sexual assault, robbery and burglary felons they were asked what security measures taken by homeowners were most effective at deterring their criminal intentions. Consistently, at the top of the list were security dogs!

WHY?
1) Canine hearing abilities…more sensitive then alarm systems;
2) Canine barking alerts homeowners and neighbors;
3) Fear of being attacked;

It is clear that Harrison and his staff have the entire process of dog selection, training and delivery down to a science making the experience an enjoyable one for the client and his or her family.

Now all you need is $25K to $60K and it’s a done deal. If you think that’s a lot of money…it is! However when you run the numbers and compare apples to apples, not only is it a great deal….it’s a must have!

Are You Compatible With German Shepherd Dogs?

German Shepherds are one of the most intelligent and versatile dog breeds in the world. But you need to know basic German Shepherd information to discoverwhat to expect from them before you bring one home. German Shepherd dogs are not satisfied until they are the center of attention. They are not vicious, but don’t know their own strength at times. German Shepherds are smarter than most people, which may get them into mischief in order to get your attention. They also can get more health problems than other breeds, especially hip and elbow dysplasia.

When anyone says the word dog, the image that pops up in most people’s mind is that of the German Shepherd. Also known as Alsatians (from the province in France where the breed was developed), the German Shepherd is one of the most popular dogs in the world. With their distinctive look, incredible intelligence and remarkable personalities, you would think the German Shepherd would be the perfect dog.

But a German Shepherd is not the dog for everyone. Their large size, their exuberant nature, their coats and sometimes health problems leave many thousands of German Shepherd Dogs to be abandoned every year. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that a quarter of all strays are purebreds, including purebred German Shepherds. Knowing basic German Shepherd information can help teach you what to expect from them as pets will help you decide if a German Shepherd is right for you and your family.

The incredible popularity of the German Shepherd has led to it being over bred. To keep up with the market for German Shepherd puppies, some breeders and puppy mills breed to death any German Shepherd they can find, no matter what it’s health. Responsible breeders and caring dog lovers are trying to stop this indiscriminate breeding and only breed healthy dogs. But German Shepherd can often seem to develop more health problems than other breeds.

The most common problem is hip dysplasia, which makes the hind legs crippled. This is a treatable condition that often involves X-rays and surgery. Many German Shepherds are abandoned just because the owners were not willing to pay the vet bills. You must be committed to caring for the dog’s health over luxuries for yourself. Many older German Shepherds also become blind, but dogs deal with blindness a lot better than people. The companionship of a German Shepherd should not have a price tag placed upon it.

German Shepherd dogs need to feel they have a job in order to be well-adjusted. They love company and to be part of the family. They hate being left out of anything. They use their intelligence to find ways of doing things they think you will like and praise them for. Whether you will like these actions is another matter. German Shepherds need supervision and training.

Because of their popularity, German Shepherd Dogs have been over bred, which has lead to health problems. Although responsible breeders would not breed an animal with health problems, which can be inherited by their puppies, many still do. The most common health problems with German Shepherds are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and cancers. Even though many of these health problems can be easily treated, the previous owners do not want to or cannot pay the vet bills and instead abandon the dog. When you get a German Shepherd keep in mind that they may need frequent visits to the vet.

german shepherd care guide
My dd’s Nintendogs game has no icons. How can we feed or care for the dog? Does the icon appear later?

My daughter just received her game for Christmas and “purchased” a german shepherd pup. She’s “trained” the dog over and over to learn his name. (He seems to forget it often.) But, there are no icons on the game for obtaining supplies. The guide book that comes with the game is terribly vague and the website is no better. The info page on the dog says he is thirsty and hungry, but the only thing she can do is call the dog, “whistle”, and pet it. She is growing bored and frustrated with it. Is this a glitch with the game? Is it defective? Or is this how the game works and icons appear as you put more “time” in?

In order to purchase supplies and see the other icons, you must first train the pup to “sit”. After that, the icons should appear. If not, then you should probably just return the game…
(Also, make sure the dog knows its name well before you train it to do something. the same thing happened with my golden retriever, as she forgot her name 3 times!)

Learn How to Train Your Working Dogs Through Working Dog Videos

Have you ever heard of the phrase “working like a dog?” This is true, in such a way that dogs are very industrious workers. Canines are capable of working different kinds of jobs similar to what we do. Among the most common tasks of working dogs are making lonely individuals happy and looking after kids and families. There are also some special breeds of canines that are tasked to assist policemen. The perfect examples for these breeds are the Doberman and German shepherd. On the other hand, some dogs work as guides for the blind people. Since working dogs don’t get paid like us, we treat them with utmost care and love.

Other than canines that assist the police and blind individuals, farm dogs are also working dogs. They are the original working dogs. They are endowed with the innate instinct of herding sheep and watching over livestock. The breeds that are appropriate for this kind of job are the Border collie, Welsh Collie, Queensland Heeler, and Australian Kelpie. If you want to know how to train your dog to round up your cattle or sheep, you can watch working dog videos. These videos contain important tips and steps on training canines.

While there are farm dogs, there are also guard dogs. They are working dogs that are trained and hired to stop or attack intruders. These canines are mostly employed in homes, buildings, and fenced properties. The breeds that are suitable for this task are the American Bulldog, German shepherd, Rottweiler, and Doberman. Even if your dog knows how to bark, it does not mean that it is a guard dog. It is simply considered a watch dog, barking mainly to warn its owners.

Police dogs are working dogs that are specifically trained to assist the police in different fields or areas. There are canines that are trained to enforce public order, chasing or detaining suspects. Sniffer dogs look out for illicit substances like explosives or drugs. The Customs employ these trained canines to smell out illegal importation of plants or wildlife. Sniffer dogs are mostly beagles. Cadaver canines are working dogs that are taught to detect the smell of bodies that are decomposing. There are also tracking dogs that search for missing individuals or find suspects. Bloodhounds are perfect tracking canines.

If you want to train your dog within a certain field, you can view working dog videos. These videos will show you how to teach your canine to carry out the tasks that it is supposed to do. One website that provides working dog videos is Working Dog Videos. Other than videos, you can also watch pictures of canines on the website. You can join groups, and become a member of organizations that specialize in the training of working dogs.

You can also upload working dog videos over at the website. Or else, you can share videos of working dogs. You can make your videos available to the public, allowing you to share videos with every user that logs on to the site. You can also do this privately, sharing working dog videos only with the members of the website. If you own a training kennel, you can promote this by uploading videos of your working dogs.

German Shepherd Tail Curl

german shepherd tail curl
i have a female german shepherd puppylooks just like a purebred, 6 wks olddoes tail tend to curl at all?

she looks and acts just like a purebred shepherd,
she is black and tan, and the vet said it looks full blooded but i didnt say anything about the tail, it stays down alot like shepherds but some times it curls but not like a chow or anything just when she walks and runs….

You should not have a 6 weeks old puppy. Even if the dam died, the breeder should have kept the litter together until at least 7 weeks old so that the pups can learn “pack language” from one another plus their uncles & aunts. You will need to work hard to ensure that she doesn’t become one of these “rude” dogs that upsets other dogs because of the way she approaches them.

For a GSD seen from the side, a correctly held tail follows the same slight curve as found in a military sabre. The GSD uses its tail for balance and to express its feelings, but should rarely raise the tail higher than its back, and NEVER raise or curl it so that the tip is ahead of the root.
Seen from behind, the tail should be straight except when being wagged.
When the GSD is standing naturally its tail should reach past its heel but not all the way to the ground.

Although the KCs (= Kennel Clubs) in Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the USofA each arrogantly produced its own independent “Standard” (as if there can be 5 or more DIFFERENT blueprints for the same house or car or breed!), the only valid Standard for the GSD was agreed to at a conference of the WUSV (World Union of GSD Clubs) and passed to the VDH (German KC) for adoption as the Country of Origin Standard of the GSD then stored by the FCI as International Standard #166: http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc , which includes much that the various rebel KCs leave out of their vague documents.

Many people have made the term “pure-bred” meaningless.
Mind you, most KCs are equally to blame – all THEY require is that both parents have been registered as that breed. Character, coat, shape, size don’t matter to those KCs.
To be sure that a pooch IS a genuine GSD you should buy only from litters where both parents possess a Breed Survey Report (BS.Cl. in English, KKl. in Germany). Just to ENTER in a Breed Survey the pooch must (1) be registered, must (2) have official hip & elbow certificates, and in most countries must also (3) have a show grading of at least Good, (4) have an Endurance Dog certificate (for gaiting 12 miles/20 km then doing simple obedience), and (5) have a trainability & courage qualification – normal is to start with BH (a “street-safe” test) then gain either HGH (herding + courage) or SchH (obedience + tracking + courage).

Akitas: The Biggest Japanese Dog Breed

An Akita is also known by the names Akita Inu or Akita Ken, which is the largest dog breed that comes from Japan. All the dog breeds indigenous to Japan are considered to be of the Spitz family. The dogs all share the same conformations as a typical Akita, which are the boxy heads, bear-like facial features, deeply set almond-shaped eyes and a boxy body with a tightly curled tail.

An Akita stands between 24-28 inches in height and approximately 60-70 cm at the withers, weighing up to 120 pounds. The Akita is a powerful dog breed, having a muscular body, wide chest and deep girth, it is thought to be one of the biggest dog breeds in the entire world, though is not classified as a giant breed like Great Danes, Saint Bernard’s or Irish Wolfhounds.

Because all native breeds are classified in much the same way, the dogs are usually classified into sub-groups because of their size. The larger of the two breeds is the Akita Inu. Medium sized dogs are called Kai, Shikoku or Ainu. The smaller sub-group of the family is called the Shiba Inu, which translates to mean “brushwood.”

The Kai dog stands a minimum of 22 inches in height at the withers, and weighs around 40-55 pounds. The Shiba Inu is the smallest of all native Japanese dog breeds and stands approximately 14-16 ½ inches, weighing in around 20-23 pounds.

Though the first Akita descendants were much smaller than the modern breeds of today, the dogs were ultimately bred for their power. Akita’s were primarily used for the hunting by the Matagi or other ancient Japanese hunters. Back then the breed was known as the Matagi Inu and according to historical accounts, the dog stood at 20 inches at the withers and weighed around 60 pounds when fully grown. The dog’s basic physical stature consisted of a muscular front torso and a boxy shaped body, which was necessary for the task of bringing down large prey like boar, bears and deer.

Throughout the following years, the Akita became larger and more muscular through the process of selective breeding. The Akita became so revered in Japanese culture that as they evolved it was all meticulously documented. The Akita’s strength is not fully tapped into and is tempered by their calm demeanor; they have an upstanding reputation for fierce loyalty as well.

At the conclusion of World War II, US soldiers returning to America brought back purebred Akita’s. The dogs were imported for fighting purposes and were bred with German Shepherds, Rottweiler’s and Bulls Mastiffs to further increase ferocity and body muscle mass. Within 20 years of interbreeding, the Akita took on an entirely different appearance than the traditional standard Akita Inu.

The American Akita is also known as the Great Japanese Dog, which is much larger than its Japanese ancestors. The evolution of the American Akita has resulted in a complete shift away from that of an Akita Inu. The Akita Inu is known in four standard colors; fawn red, sesame, white and brindle. The dog can also have patches of white on the face, chest, neck, tail and body. American Akita’s in contrast, can have all colors and patterns on their coat, some even have a black face mask. The American version has lost the bear-like appearance of Japanese Akita’s and now has more of a resemblance to a German Shepherd.

German Shepherd Growth Rates

german shepherd growth rates
How do you (or can you) predict growth on a German shepherd?

A couple days ago, I took my nine-month old GSD to the veterinarian. They got a weight on him and he was 88 pounds – which is almost 20 pounds over the “average” weight for his age. But the vet says he is perfect weight.

Alex refuses to eat between meals (unless it’s a slice of velveta cheese, which he reluctantly takes, and often drops on the ground somewhere). I take him for walks every day for an hour and he (usually) spends one day a week at a dog park playing with other dogs. He eats a lot when he wakes up and just before he goes to sleep.

I understand he will stop growing in height/length at ten months, but will fill out and grow more muscle up until age two. Can I expect him to top 100 pounds at full-growth?

He’s my first German shepherd, so I have no experience. Anyone have personal experience with the growth rates?

I’ve had a lot of German Shepherds and my one was the same as your boy – he weighed about 115/120. Your boy is at least going to be a 100 pounds, most likely. My Shepherd’s parents were huge too- what about yours? You should be okay – if the vet says he is perfect weight he is (the vet is basing it on his frame and how much weight he should be carrying).

German Shepherds growth rates ?

I recently got a german shepherd puppy at 8 weeks old she weighed 2.2kg now at 4 months she is at 11 kgs just wondering if any one would know if this growth rate is about right. I would ask my vet but unfortunately she is on holidays. The dog looks and acts healthy exactly what it says she should look like so im not really worried mainly just curious.

She is considerably underweight for a GSD at those ages.
Click http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/the_GSD_source/links/Size___Weight_001198649681/ to get averages. Averages aren’t requirements, but your girl is around 25% under average, so is probably the result of a cross with a smaller breed. It is possible that she is a pituitary dwarf, but I would expect one to be even lighter.

Accept that weight isn’t what’s important – pups grow at different rates, and the weight “today” depends on current height, current length, current depth, density of bone, development of muscle, and amount of fat.
What counts are condition and energy.
