siberian huskie/german shepherd mix?

I have a friend that has a siberian huskie/german shepherd puppy who needs a home. I am trying to convince my my in letting us take him. I have seen the puppy and already know he is the sweetest puppy ever and super friendly…he came right up to new people and didn’t bark at all. My mom is more worried about training and size. So does anyone know how big to expect this dog to get, if it will shed, and any other possible concerns. Thanks so much!

I had one a few years ago, and I loved him to death!

He will shed. Everywhere. Constantly.
That puppy is also going to need a daily jog, because otherwise he is just going to have too much energy, and will find destructive ways to wear himself out.
husky/GSD mix means that he will be very smart and easy to train if you know what you are doing. He is probably going to be very playful and rambunctious, but once he understands the rules, then his playfulness will start to be enjoyable. Games like fetch, and learning new tricks, are going to give him plenty of stimulation.

They also love toys, and will play with them like a kid would play with a toy(throwing, chasing, imagining with it). He will be an excited barker, and that can really get out of hand if you don’t keep it under control.
Awesome dog, but can be a real handful if you don’t know what you are doing. I would recommend for someone who has experience with training dogs.

German Shepherd Puppy Training – Learn The Facts Before You Buy A GSD Puppy

If you are still in the process of buying a German shepherd puppy, it really is in your best interest to bear these points in mind.

Make sure you buy a GSD from a good breeder. This is a big plus to insuring your German shepherd has a healthy happy life as an adult. Good genes and a good temperament are two ways to improve his quality of life.

Get referred by people that know, vets, kennel clubs, dog training clubs. These are excellent ways to get pointed in the right direction. The people at these places will have vast knowledge and passion about the GSD breed and will usually be more than happy to offer professional advice for free.

When you decide to buy your German shepherd puppy, don’t take the task lightly, they won’t be trained in one week. This is not a part time affair; it requires dedication and consistency throughout your dog’s developmental years.

As one of the most loyal and disciplined of breeds, the evidence stands out why the police force makes it their dog of choice. Yet each and every one of them has been trained to exceptional standard. If you don’t follow this line of practice with yours, you could end up with a truly unruly creature that will end up wreaking havoc in your home.

A full grown German shepherd is somewhere in the region of 90 pounds, they are more than capable of overpowering someone of smaller stature with ease. Although they may not mean any harm, most GSD puppies do not mature mentally and emotionally till their third year. This is why discipline is important.

Don’t fall into the mistake of thinking because they look cute when they are young, you won’t have any problems. They are smart and they are instinctively pack mentality orientated. Your German shepherd puppy will begin to test you and its boundaries fairly early on. Slowly attempting to climb to the alpha male of the pack. Learning its place in your family is crucial for both you and his quality of life.

Social integration, biting, hierarchy, house training. These and more, are all aspects you need to know if you are going to buy a GSD puppy for your home and family.

German Shepherd Pit Bulls

September 29th, 2009 admin No comments

Will a German shepherd be able to defend me against a pit bull and win?

I have a 90 lbs German Shepherd and we walk past a yard with a vicious pit bull. Will it win a fight against the pit bull if it chooses to jump the fence and attack?
I look at studies and they discovered that pit bulls DO NOT have locked jaws. However sometimes pit bulls jaw muscle continue to contract after tranquilize along with other breeds like Belgian Malinois. Also a German shepherd has more bite force.

Not sure but I was letting my friend’s german shepard in the house and it got loose from me and ran after a man walking a pit bull so they must be confident enough to do it.

How To Choose A Dog That Will Make You Happy!

If you choose a purebred puppy – and there are hundreds of breeds to choose from – you’ll know ahead of time how your puppy is going to turn out when he grows up. That’s the benefit of choosing a purebred as opposed to a mixed-breed or hybrid dog! You can find out before you even buy him: how much he’ll shed, how easy he’ll be to train, how much grooming he’ll require, whether he’s going to be a good watchdog or guard dog, how big he’s going to be, what he’s going to look like, how athletic he’ll be, and how he’s going to behave. Of course, every dog has it’s own unique personality and behavioral quirks. But in general, all dogs of a particular breed will grow up to act and behave like the other dogs of that breed. For example, you know that a German Shepherd puppy is going to grow up into a dog that striking in appearance, very easy to train, eager-to-please, athletic, protective, and intelligent: like all German Shepherd dogs are.

Purebred dogs are man-made. They wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for us. Pugs, Border Collies, Yorkies – every breed – wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for us humans creating them.

To create a new breed someone decides what characteristics they want the breed to have. Then they only breed dogs together who have those characteristics. Lots of inbreeding then takes place. After years of selective breeding  (breeding out the undesirable characteristics) and inbreeding a new “breed” is born. And when you breed dogs of that new breed together they produce puppies who grow up to be the same as the parents.

As I mentioned above the benefit of choosing a purebred puppy is that you know how your dog is going to turn out — in advance — even before he’s born.

So assuming you’re going to purchase or adopt a purebred puppy or dog, here are some of the things to consider about the many different breeds:

Shedding

All dog breeds shed hair. They all shed different amounts of hair. Some breeds shed virtually no hair, some shed quite a lot, and some shed a lot of hair!

If it bothers you finding loose hairs stuck to everything in your home then choose a low-shedding breed.

Ease of Training

Some breeds are easier to train than others because they learn training commands faster.

The easier the dog is to train the less time and patience you need to train him.

If you want a dog who learns your commands quickly choose a breed that is easy to train.

Grooming

How much time you need to spend grooming your dog depends on the length of the coat and how much the coat sheds. If the dog breed you’re considering has a long coat you’ll need to either clip it short, or brush it often. If the dog breed you’re considering sheds lot of hair you might find yourself brushing the coat every day to remove the dead hair. Because what you remove with a brush doesn’t end up in the house!

Want a Jogging Companion?

Some breeds were made to be athletic and posses great stamina. If you want a dog who can accompany you on long walks, hikes, jogs and rides then you should choose one of these breeds.

Good With Children

Pretty much all breeds are great with children. Thousands of people have small children and own Rottweiler, Pit Bulls, and other more aggressive dogs and they never have any problems at all. These owners will tell you that their dogs are the sweetest and most gentle dogs on earth. And it’s true.

However, which dog has the ability to do more damage to a small child: a Pit Bull or a Pug? Obviously it’s the Pit Bull. So if you want to play it safe choose a breed who doesn’t really have the ability to harm a child or one who doesn’t have a bad reputation. And always supervise very small children and babies around the dog! Small children could inadvertently tease the dog and he could snap at them.

Guard Dog or Watchdog

Some breeds like German Shepherds and Rottweilers make excellent guard dogs. They’re naturally very protective and suspicious of strangers. They have the ability to intimidate and deter an intruder.

On the other hand, some breeds are just good at keeping watch and raising the alarm. And some little dogs have such a loud, deep bark they can even scare and intruder away.

Size

When choosing a breed consider size. Small dogs are make training easier because you can control them a lot easier than a big, strong and powerful dog. The small breeds also make less mess, and they coast less to care for.

Is Sportmix High Energy Adult Chunk Dog Chow good for my dogs?

Is this food good for my dogs or is it just another shitty commercial filler dog food ?…I have 5 dogs 3 young rottweilers between 11 months and 1yr and a half and 2 four year old rott and german shepherd mix…is it a good chow?,it was recommended by the guy in the pet store.

I agree with Alambre…. Orijen is a great food for high energy dogs, and has *zero* junk or fillers. Best of the best.

Add: I just read their ingredients list for Sportmix…. the first ingredient is “Chicken By-Product Meal”… that is *terrible*. Second ingredient is corn, third is un-named meat meal. BAD!

Making Sure you Choose the Right Dog for you

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes and have a whole range of very different personalities and characteristics. There are literally hundreds of breeds of pedigree dogs and an infinite number of mixed breed dogs. Hopefully, when you get a dog you are about to spend the next ten to fifteen years with your new pet. So it is very important that you make a good decision in the type of dog that you choose.

You want to ensure maximum compatibility with the dog so that you have a harmonious relationship together and that the dog fits in with your lifestyle, accommodation and fulfils what it is that you want to get out of owning a dog. From all of the choice of dog breeds available then, where do you start in choosing the type of dog that is right for you?

There are obviously some very basic and important considerations to start off with such as: one dog or more, size of the dog, long hair or short, character and personality type of the dog and whether it is important that the dog is good with children or not.

Domestic dogs were almost certainly descended from wolves and adapted, by selective breeding, over the years to produce a much human friendlier animal, often with specific work purposes in mind.

For simplicity, modern dogs are often divided up into seven broad categories based on their characteristics and what they were bred to do. When choosing a dog it can be helpful to start off with which broad group of dog is most appealing to you, before looking at the individual breeds within the group in more detail. In order to help you do this I have summarised the seven main types of dog below.

Working dogs – Dogs have been bred to perform a variety of useful working tasks including pulling heavy equipment, guarding and retrieving. Dogs in this group often have very strong instinctive characteristics, which are of benefit for the particular task that they were bred to perform, such as high activity levels and stamina, or being strong willed and protective. These dogs are loyal and affectionate but do require a lot of exercising. Typical dog breeds within this category would include the Alaskan Malamute, Doberman, Boxer and St Bernard.

Pastoral (or herding) dogs – These dogs were bred predominantly to herd domestic animals. They have a very strong chase instinct to assist in their herding functions and need a great deal of exercise. They are generally very intelligent and enjoy challenging play with toys. They were bred to work closely with humans and will develop very strong bonds with their owners. Typical examples of breeds within this category are the Border Collie, German Shepherd and Finnish Lapphund.

Terriers – These were bred to catch and kill vermin or to help in hunting sports. They are usually fairly small and have strong predatory instincts. They can be dangerous around small pets unless they have been raised with them. They are often fairly feisty characters but are usually affectionate and outgoing with their owners. Typical examples are the Jack Russell Terrier, Airedale Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier.

Gundogs (or sporting dogs) – Gundogs were bred to help flush out game and retrieve shot animals. They are very sociable dogs that like a lot of contact with humans and often have a soft chew, so as not to damage the retrieved animals. This means that they can be very playful dogs and enjoy lots of toy play and are good with children. Good examples within this group are the pointer, Weimeraner and Labradors.

Utility dogs – These are a mixed group of dogs with various traits from each of the other groups so they really need looking at individually. Examples of utility dogs include the Dalmatian, Bulldog and Chow Chow.

Hounds – Hounds were bred to track and hunt prey and work with humans in catching the animals. They have very strong chase instincts and often a very deep bark but tend not to use it unnecessarily. They are used to living in packs and are therefore very sociable; they can appear lazy at times but will benefit from occasional long energetic runs. Typical examples include the Afghan hound, Beagle and the Bloodhound.

Toy dogs – These were bred mainly for companionship and have most of the working traits bred out of them. Most are fairly small dogs and they are usually pretty well mannered , like a lot of human contact and have a desire to please their owner. They are often well suited to those without much space but can be especially prone to ill health. Typical examples of toy dogs include the Chihuahua, King Charles Spaniel and Pekingese.

These groups are obviously fairly broad and whichever breeds you are considering should be looked at and researched in more detail. Ideally, you should visit the appropriate dog breeders or rescue centres and see the dogs for yourself before making a final decision. Whatever type of dog you choose, I hope you have many happy years with your canine companion.

German Shepherd Art Work

training a dog for protection?

ok, i live out in the country and i don’t believe in guns cause i have trained muay thai and martial arts all of my life. my wife and kids are sometimes at home when i’m away at work. is it possible that a dog can be trained that he is protective of the family and not to fight like people use them for? i mean want him to be playful and fetch ball or freesbie and etc…but i don’t want to fight my dog in any way. i just want one for security in my home. is there any videos or training on how to do so to make this happen? i notice that police use german shepherds but i have seen they use pit bulls too. i think they are just gorgeous! i just want one from birth to grow with my family pretty much.

You cannot, I repeat CANNOT, train your own protection dog. You can purchase one already trained and yes, it will fullfill your needs as far as family pet, playing ball with the kids and totally safe to take with on family outtings. Safe for family and friends who come over to be around etc etc etc. However, you are looking at $50,000-100,00. The amount of training that is put into a dog like this is astronomical. You cannot just pick a puppy and say “yup, train that one!” As not all dogs have a personality suited for PPD work.

Schutzhund is a “sport” it is a game that dogs play. Most dogs performing this will not bite an actual person nor “protect”. They just view the bite sleeve as a bit huge tug toy and work to get to play.

If you attempt to train a ppd yourself I guarantee you will end up with a dog who has some aggression issues. You WILL end up with a dog who bites the wrong person at the wrong time. It will not be a dog safe to have around.

With that said, ANY dog makes a good deterrent. Burglars and such simply try not to target homes that contain a dog. Even a yippy little dog is a threat to a burglar as all that barking gives them away. Get yourself a Brinks home security system if you are concerned about your families welfare while you are away. Unless you have $100,000 to spend a dog is merely a pet. Hope I helped

How To Choose the Right Dog Breed For Your Family

Getting a pet dog is really a Zen process of self-discovery. You can’t know the right dog for you until you know yourself. For example, a jock would prefer an active dog. A lazy slug would prefer a dog that doesn’t require much exercise.

A touchy-feely person would prefer a friendly dog. A tightly-wound person would probably prefer a dog that doesn’t bark or shed too much. Think of picking a pup like choosing a mate; you have to find one that compliments your personality.

Here are some very general guidelines. Of course, we won’t list every dog breed on the planet, but they’ll get you thinking in the right direction:

Intelligent dogs

- Poodle
- German Shepherd
- Australian Sheepdog
- Belgian Sheepdog

Dogs with little exercise

- Dachshund
- Brussels Griffon
- French Bulldog
- Manchester Terrier
- Toy breeds (such as a Chihuahua or Pekingese)

Good with kids

- Pug
- English Cocker Spaniel
- Beagle
- Basset Hound
- Brittany Spaniel
- Old English Sheepdog

Good city dogs

- Pug
- Basenji
- Boston Terrier
- Bulldog
- Lhasa Apso
- Welsh Corgi
- Scottish Terrier

Quiet dogs

- Basenji
- Borzoi
- Chesapeake Bay Retriever
- Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
- Whippet

Friendly dogs

- Brittany Spaniel
- Bichon Frise
- Old English Sheepdog
- Bearded Collie
- Golden Retriever
- Labrador Retriever

There are dozens of breeds and dozens of traits to sort them by. You get the idea.

Again, these guidelines are EXTREMELY rough. Picking a dog based on these lists is like getting a phone number off a bathroom wall. There are no shortcuts. You can try going to a dog show or talking to a vet.

In our opinion, though, the absolutely best way to research is to talk to friends who have dogs. Believe us; they’ll give you more information than you care to know: Sometimes even more than what we know.

In case you didn’t realize it, all of the breeds we listed above are purebreds. This means that they are the product of parents of the same breed. To get a true purebred worthy of being in a dog show, you often have to pay thousands of dollars.

Most people get mixes of some sort (the “cockapoo,” a combo of a cocker spaniel and a poodle, is quite popular), because rumor has it that purebred dogs can have personality problems because the gene pool is so small (think of people who marry their cousins). As a result, many people choose to go with a mutt, a mish-mash of different breeds.

Mutts can combine the best of two or more breeds in a one-of-a-
kind dog. Having a mutt is like the canine equivalent of owning an original work of art. Benji was a mutt. And who doesn’t like Benji?

German Shepherd Long Coat Breeders

September 27th, 2009 admin No comments

german shepherd long coat breeders
why is it that only smooth coated GSDs are allowed in the show ring and not their long coated cousins?

The reason i ask is that they all come from the same gene pool so whats the problem the same goes for the white German shepherd for years ago and often is the case with some breeders to cull any white pups of the litter, I think they all have something to offer, any thoughts on the matter anyone?

Well mix breed dogs also have a lot to offer but that’s not the point. Short to medium length GSDs are allowed on the show ring as long as it is not too long. White German Sheperds are considered a genetic fault because it can be associated with deafness. Many dog shows exist to display the ideal example of the breed both physically and mentally. Breed standards can be strict but they are there to ensure healthy, vibrant, robust dogs. Physical characteristics may not seem much but they usually indicate whether the dog is in good health and has good genes..
A good GSD breeder will neuter the white pups and find good homes for them

German Shepherd Puppies – 8 Tips To Owning And Raising One

Not long after buying a German shepherd puppy, you will want to think about implementing obedience training. As a pack animal, German shepherds, just like any other dog, will begin to test the boundaries of the pack hierarchy. Keeping you dog in its rightful place in the chain of command is important for both of you.

As one of the more intelligent breeds of dog, German shepherd learn quick. Is it any wonder, the police use them as their dog of choice. They need stimulus, don’t let your puppy grow up neglected.

Exercise is a must for various reasons. Firstly, it is essential for growth and developing natural reflexes. Secondly, it will help your dog mix socially, another equally important part of your German shepherd’s development. So remember, plenty of brisk walks and any secure open areas that you may live near.

German shepherds can grow to about 100 pound, they are powerful, quick and will have no problems sweeping objects off of nearby sideboards, so keep valuables out of reach while they are growing. Remember, a German shepherd is still a puppy up to the age of around three, fully grown physically but mentally a tazmanian devil.

While on the search for a puppy, find one from a genuine breeder, this will ensure good genes; you can find good breeders in you classifieds or get a referral from your vet, kennel clubs or dog training clubs.

Before buying a GSD, spend a little time at a club and get first hand experience what sort of commitment is needed in owning and raising a German shepherd puppy. Speak so various owners, they will put you straight and may save you valuable time and heartache, should ownership not be for you.

German shepherd’s are a breed with a naturally heavy coat. They tend to moult far more than most other breeds of dog. Be prepared to vacuum a lot more than usual.

Lastly, you dog needs to mix with lots of other dogs and people, this is one of the best ways to keeping an even temperament. A dog kept away from the world, will become defensive and suspicious of others the longer it is kept isolated.

Who is the world’s most loyal and best guard dog?(large breed)?

I am a little bit confused between German shepherd and Doberman. Through I prefer Doberman who are known for there loyalty and guard dog ability. who has got maximum physical strength in large dog breed? (not giant breeds such as st bernard, mastiff etc.)

a WELL BRED Doberman or GSD will both be great loyal companions and great dogs overall. physical strength is not as important as the dogs temperament. if you get a poorly bred GSD or Dobie, they will be timid, nervous and hiding behind you for protection! these dogs have been bred so poorly in US lately that they are shadows of their old selves.

if you are ready to shell some $$ for a good bred dog, do your research on both breeds and decide for yourself what are the most important traits. with GSD, there is more hair, with doberman(if you do ear crop) there is ear care. Doberman will also not do well if its really cold or hot, they tend to be quite sensitive to weather temperatures.

in the schutzhund club where i train my dobie, i see many great GSDs, Rotties, Boxers and Dobies. all are well bred and with training they are great protection dogs, but they do need training.

here is a video of dobie competing in french ring,
very nice display of obedience and power

edit: amarant, doberman was bred specifically to be a guard dog. my dobie is friendly as can be until she senses danger or my fear and trust me you would not want to cross her. she is not an aggressive attack machine, she is a confident dog that will destroy anything that poses danger to her pack.
sounds like you came across some poorly bred dobies, please don’t base your opinion on the couch potatoes US back yard breeders are popping out.
I always get compliments from vets and friends and strangers on what a sweet heart she is and what a well mannered dog she is. I worked hard to make her that way. Socialized, socialized and socialized when she was a pup. When she is working with me though she is a freaking beast.

Stubborn Dog – Help For Training

Knowing HOW TO train a stubborn dog makes a huge difference but it is still not as easy as training a normal dog. Stubborn dogs tend to come from these breeds so I will start this article by identifying these breeds. This might help you in making a decision when buying a dog.

Afghan hound – Airedale Terrier – Akita – Alaskan Malamute – Alaskan Husky – American Pit Bull – American Staffordshire Terrier -
Belgian Shepherd – Bernese Mountain Dog – Bloodhound – Border Collie – Borzoi – Bull Terrier – Chinese Shar-Pei – Chow Chow -
Doberman – German Shepherd – Giant Schnauzer – Great Dane – Greyhound – Irish Wolfhound – Mastiff – Rhodesian Ridgeback -
Rottweiler – Saluki – Siberian Husky – Weimaraner – Setters

Stubborn dogs are not found in the sporting dogs as often as they are found in the hound and terrier groups. I think about a dog that is very stubborn until they tree or pursue the game to the end when I think about hounds. Many people in my area, who have deer dogs, sometimes have to wait until season is over to find their dogs.

This is not to say these dogs can not be trained at all but rather to say it will take patience, knowledge, and confidence on the trainer’s part to be successful. These breeds are not well suited for kennels and they need companionship. Many people are taking on the challenge of dog training today because economic conditions has made professional training fees more of a luxury than a necessity. If you make a decision to train your own dog, you will need a good book or two to learn the helpful secrets that will save you hours of frustration.

Dog training can be likely to become a struggle between the trainer and the dog. When you understand that dogs have a “pack nature” that creates a “dominate nature” it makes it easy to understand the struggle. This means they had rather lead than follow! If you have had children you may understand this concept.

Here are some tips when working with a stubborn dog…

1- Use a firm voice but be cautious not to scream and lose your cool. You must be consistant when working with your dog because like children, they will pick up on inconsistance without difficulty. This creates confusion in their mind. Just imagine if you were the dog and one time you get scolded for doing something wrong and the next time you get a pat on the head. Also be very precise to correct your dog when the problem occurs. Dogs do not comprehend delayed punishment.

2- Body language is also important because you want to look sure of yourself to your dog and always look them in the eyes. This is somewhat of a domination technuqie. When correcting or praising your dog, always look them in the eyes.

3- One great techneque is to use some type of noise maker when your dog is not obeying. These items are trouble-free to make by taking a plastic bottle and placing a few small rocks in it. If you need to correct the dog by stricking them with an object that does not hurt, but makes a loud noise, use a large plastic baseball bat. If you need a louder sound, buy a bat with a larger end. You can also drop a few small pebbles in the end of the bat for additional sound.

4- Using a pinch collar to train your dog to heel, sit, and stay is the fastest easiest method there is. I can train most dogs with this method within one week. It works great and this is the first step in training. This method can be found in eBooks.

Training your own dog will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. You will enjoy showing your dog’s obedience to all of your friends. The sooner you get started the sooner you will achieve success.

I am Moving From California To San Antonio Texas with my two dogs. What can I do???

I have a German Shepherd 2 yrs old, and a German/ husky mix 8 months. We are taking them in My Scion Tc. ANY ADVICE WILL HELP. THANKS>

I just returned from a road trip from Maine to Charleston, South Carolina and back again (about a 22 hour drive) with my 2 pit bulls (one is 5 years, and one is 9 months). My fiance drove most of the time, but as far as my dogs….we just had to be sure to stop every 4 hours or so to make sure they were ‘bathroomed’, give them water so they don’t dehydrate in the car, and let them stretch their legs for a few minutes. We did not crate the dogs at all in the car(our girls love looking out the window) but for most of the ride they either slept, or gazed out the back window of the Honda civic (2 door..hatchback) and stared down the car behind us…it was kinda funny. Maybe a couple rawhide chews to keep them busy when they get a bit restless. But I guess it all depends on their general temperament on car rides…I’m lucky my girls are always on their best behaviour in the car (even if they argue outside…lol) Hope this helped…e-mail me if you’d like to see a picture of the pups on the ride.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is again the most popular AKC breed in the U.S.A. Additionally, they lead in nearly every major city. With a generally friendly, happy demeanor, an adaptability to many situations and intelligence to be trained for a wide host of duties, it’s little wonder that this breed is so well loved.

The Labrador is so dominant in our culture that nearly any short haired medium sized black dog is deemed a “Lab cross”. By the standard they actually are 22-1/2 to 24-1/2 inches at the shoulder, with females slightly smaller, and weigh 65-80 pounds.

This is a breed that was developed to work. The extreme variety of work they have eagerly taken on and learned is a testimony to the breeding for function. A short, dense, hard coat allows the breed to work in all types of weather. Black, yellow or chocolate is the accepted colors, with a distinct thick tail that isn’t like any other breed. The purebred labrador is a square, stocky dog that has the image of power, a dog that moves freely without being too heavy.

The typical Labrador enjoys being outside with people, and especially is drawn to water. This is instinctive as they have long been used for retreiving waterfowl for hunters, and further back than that were developed for water work.

The breed was developed for work in harsh, wet climates assisting with fishing nets on boats. Their love of water and retrieving meant they were also eager to get birds downed by hunters. The Lab of today traces back to pedigrees in 1878. The breed itself goes back further, but in their native Newfoundland they nearly became extinct due to dog taxes, quarantine laws and crossbreeding. The AKC first recognized the breed in 1917.

A relatively small section of the breed is maintained as show dogs – for those interested in the physical standard it can be found at http://www.akc.org/breeds/labrador_retriever/ – but for many the real value in the breed comes in their training and versatility.

The Labrador excels at a wide variety of duties and activities. A few of these include: Search and Rescue, search K-9, service dogs, seeing eye dogs, hunting dogs, carting, tracking, a wide variety of dog sports and of course family pets.

The Labrador is a friendly dog that loves people and is eager to be active. Some of the more “hyper” dogs that have been holy terrors in the home were bored – and given active jobs of search dogs became wonderful companions also. They love to play but take discipline and strict handling.

From a young age teach your Labrador not to pull on the leash – when he gets big his powerful neck can make for some uncomfortable experiences and unpleasant walks. Labs are highly intelligent, and can be quite dominant in attitude. As puppies they need structure and training as they can be incredibly destructive without it. They are lively and play hard.

Generally speaking the Lab lives 10-12 years with good care. Their negative qualities of dominance, somewhat exhuberant and active can be molded into good things.

Lab heroes are many. Jake, found wandering and injured as young adult, became a certified rescue dog, on call to respond to disasters of all kinds. From work as a certified therapy dog to working the rubble of the World Trade Center and the remains of Hurricane Katrina, Jake was an inspiration. When he died at age 12 from cancer in July 2007 it made national news.

More recently, a Labrador bit the foot of his young owner, home with a friend and sleeping in a basement bedroom, until they woke up. He is credited with saving their lives as upstairs part of the home was on fire.

A K-9 search dog was called in following a warehouse fire. It was suspected there was someone inside the building but the task was incredible, with six feet of ash. “Ruger” located the spot the remains were and confirmed a homeless man was in the building.

While detection dogs are often associated with narcotic dogs there are many other things the Labrador is trained to find. Explosives, illegal wildlife, propane leaks, accelerant (helpful in arson fires), and many other things can be taught to a search dog. Dogs have even walked the crowd at a fire and found the arsonist by alerting on the ignitable liquids present on clothing and hands but undetected by humans.

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association uses almost exclusively Labradors and German Shepherds for their training and work. These dogs are large enough to lead but small enough to lay under the table in restaurants or in other public places. Temperament, intelligence and versatility are hallmarks of these dogs, which also are factors the Labrador has, making them ideal for the work.

There are other types of hearing dogs. Hearing and signal dogs alert the owner to a doorbell, telephone, smoke alarm and other things the person may not hear. Other dogs accompany their owners, picking up things that are dropped, opening and closing doors and if needed pulling wheelchairs.

Therapy dogs and seizure alert dogs are but two more ways these dogs serve humans. These every day heroes in many facets of service are often seen and misunderstood. They are pets but first and formost they are working dogs. Don’t pet or feed a working service dog without expressed permission.

Even the “ordinary” Labrador can easily be taught many useful tasks without being a full-fledged service dog. One helps an unsteady owner by bracing while she steadies herself after standing.

An ideal outlet for the Labrador is as a hunter, something they excel at. Swimming into the water to bring back ducks is a skill they can do, and the “soft” mouth does so without harming the feathers, skin or meat of the duck.

Because of their love of water, dogs that have access to it should be watched for water getting in the ear and causing problems. The condition of these dogs, because they are stocky anyway, should be monitored closely to keep them from being too fat or too thin.

Unfortunately, like all dogs, Labradors are susceptible to health issues. When purchasing a pup keep in mind the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA and other eye disorders. Clean lines from healthy stock makes a big difference. They have a tendency to gain too much weight, something that needs closely monitored. Dwarfism, muscle myopathy and hypothyroidism also can affect the breed.

Genetic testing of the parents makes a difference as many issues are genetic. A litter of 7-8 puppies is not unusual and up to 10 is possible. For this reason be very careful when breeding and do so only to improve the breed, with a goal in mind.

Some pet food companies have a dog food formulated for the specific needs of the Labrador, marketed as a breed based food.

There are many reasons the Labrador is the #1 dog, but the myriad of tasks they do, the trainability and intelligence and their adapting to so many situations are but a few. They’re a great dog for an active family. They can easily be a seasonal hunter, a family pet and a household assistance dog.

Why is my dog getting dizzy after playing?

Hi, I have a 2 year old German Shepherd. Every time I come home and play with her (fetch, frisbee, etc), she gets quite dizzy immediately after. She doesn’t demonstrate other seizure-like symptoms, just gets quite dizzy, lays down, drinks a ton of water, and is fine a few minutes later. She had been on an allergy medicine (like Benadryl) for a skin rash, and that’s when it first started happening, but she has been off of it for several weeks and the dizziness continues. I really appreciate any advice you can offer. Thank you.

Maybe if you continue to give her allergy medicine the dizzyiness will go away.

Exercises For Different Dog Breeds

Dogs of different breeds behave differently and have different physical characteristics. It is therefore advised that different breeds of dogs should get different exercise routines so that they do not get over exhausted or obese. Selecting the right exercise regime for your dog depending on the breed is therefore essential.

Breeds and their exercises
Based on the different classes of breeds, a set of exercises can be determined.

1. Terriers- This class of dog includes breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier, Irish Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Welsh Terrier and the famous American Pit Bull Terrier. They are highly intelligent and full of energy and can thus manage mind and body games such as obstacle courses and Frisbee. Chasing games are also good for this class of dogs.

2. Companion Dogs/ Toy Dogs- These are generally dogs, which are bred for companionship rather than utility such as Chihuahua, Pug, English bulldog and Shih Tzu. They require only minimal exercises such as walking. However, some breeds, which are also for companionship like the Dalmations and the Yorkshire terriers, need walks that are more vigorous.

3. Hounds- The hounds can be sub classified into two more subtypes: the scent hounds (which are bred to search on the basis of scent e.g. Harrier, Coonhound and Dachshund) and the sight hounds (which are bred to search on the basis of sight e.g. Greyhound, Irish wolfhound and Basenji). They have tendency to switch between work and play and therefore are recommended for walks, runs and hikes.

4. Guardian Dogs- These include breeds like the Bullmastiff, Great Dane, Great Pyrenee, Doberman Pinscher and the Rottweiler. These are strong dogs that can be quite active, however behaviorally they tend to start taking the play quite seriously, which could be problematic. It is therefore recommended that these dogs should be given exercise in the form of runs and obstacle courses but within limits.

5. Northern Dogs- This class includes dogs from breeds like the Chinook, Siberian husky, Malamute and Chow Chow. They are highly active and should be exercised a lot with hiking, runs, games (like sledding) to keep them active.

6. Gun/ Sporting Dogs- This class includes breeds like the Irish Settler, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel and the Standard Poodle. Being bred for sports and hunting, these dogs have a lot of stamina and require a lot of exercise. Long walks, hiking and running activities are good. In addition, games like fetch can be played to keep the activity up.

7. Herding Dogs- Breeds, which come under this class, include the English Sheepdog, Welsh Corgi, Collie, Border Collie, German Shepherd, and the Schnauzer. These breeds generally have a moderate to high energy level and are therefore suited to a variety of exercises. Almost any games and sports are good for the dogs, especially runs, walks and challenging hikes.

Thus, depending on which class of breed your dog falls into, you should select an appropriate exercise regime for it. You must also determine the personality of your dog to best choose games and activities, which it can do for its wellbeing.
