German Shepherd Dog

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

German shepherd dog also known as Alsatian in France, UK and Ireland, more commonly in France as “Berger Allemand”, Schaferhund and by the acronym GSD or simply German shepherd. This dog breed is originally bred for herding sheep. German shepherd dogs are one of the most popular breeds in UK with 12,857 registrations and also in US with 43,575 registrations. These breeds are best for working as guide dogs for the blind, police work, guarding, search and rescue, therapy and in military. German shepherds can also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. These dogs are sociable and it is necessary for young puppies in order to prevent aggressive and dangerous behavior is an adult.

The standards for the breed differ by country and organization. The general definition of the German shepherd dog is large and strong dog between 75 and 110 lbs but can reach 150+lbs. Males will reach the height 24-26 inch (60-65cm) and females will reach the height of 22-24 inch (55-60). The dogs has double coat with under coat and outer coat fur. Short haired dogs are preferred while some of the organizations accept long haired German shepherds. The coats of these are in black with tan, sable or all black but also will come in blue, liver and white which are considered a fault according to most standards. White is not acceptable for the German shepherd and now recognized as a separate breed known as American White shepherd. The nose is normally black but with blue or liver will occur sometimes and considered as a fault.

The body of German shepherd dogs are elongated, sturdy, and muscular with a light but solid bone structure. The head should be proportionate with the body and a little convex head. Ears are wide at the base, pointed, upright and turned forward but of puppies less than six months may droop slightly. The eyes are almond-shaped, dark with a lively intelligent expression but never protruding. The tail is bushy and will reach to the hocks and hangs down when it is at rest. The front legs and the shoulders are muscular and the thighs are thick and sturdy. The feet are round with soles. There are three varieties of the German shepherd. They are rough coated; long rough coated and the long haired.

German shepherd is used as working dogs which are direct and fearless, eager and alert. The dog is known for its courage and loyalty towards their masters. They are confident but not hostile, high learning ability, serious, almost human in his intelligence and obedient. They bark, if it is necessary and love to be close to their families.

How to teach my dog to fetch?

My dog is a german shepherd/jack russell mutt and is around 4 years old. He likes to chase things but only because he thinks he’s playing keep away. I’ve tried a lot of methods like the two toy one but he still won’t fetch. Please help.

It is difficult to teach a terrier or a terrier mix to fetch. That’s not what they do inately, unlike one of the retriever or sporting dogs.

One thing you can try:

Put the dog on a long line (longer than a leash), say about 10 feet. Throw the toy and let him run out to get it. Then call the dog by name and gently reel him back in. Give him a small treat so that he will drop the item he’s retrieved. Eventually, the dog will learn that there’s a treat in it for him.

Avoid going to pick up the item once he’s carried it off and dropped it somewhere. Name the item each time you throw it for him “ball,” “kong,” “stick,” etc., show it to him and throw it. Then say “Fetch the ball” or “Get the ball.”

Eventually he’ll know what you’re talking about regarding specific items. You should be able to say “Where’s your ball?” or “Where’s your stick?” and expect him to go and get it and bring it to you to throw.

JRT and mixes of JRT are highly intelligent. You may not be able to teach him to fetch with any ease, but there are lots of things you can teach him. So don’t lose heart!

DOG OBEDIENCE TRAINING
———————–

MAKE THE PUPS KNOW WHO’S IN CHARGE
They can ruin everything? from your bags to your clothes, your bed sheets to your curtains.

HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUND
Some of the listed Working dog breeds are: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Bernese Mountain Dog, Black Russian Terrier, Boxer, Bullmastiff, Doberman Pinscher, German Pinscher, Giant Schnauzer, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Komondor, Kuvasz, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Newfoundland, Portuguese Water Dog, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Standard Schnauzer, Tibetan Mastiff.Herding dogs actively round up cattle and sheep with frantic running, eye contact and aggressive barking unlike the livestock guardians that simply stand as a guard. These fiery little dynamos would dig up underground dens and burrows while barking furiously, forcing the inhabitants out where hunters awaited. If it weren’t for the fact that most terriers, such as the Cairn and the Norfolk, are fairly small, their tenacious nature and boundless energy would make them hard to control.Golden Retrievers are among the most popular breeds in America. But for the most part, these are large, powerful dogs. Some indiscriminate breeders have inflamed congenital problems by careless over-breeding, and have created unstable temperaments through simple neglect. Two purebred dogs are sometimes deliberately crossed in hopes of creating a new breed such as the cockapoo, which is one part cocker spaniel, one part poodle.Non-sporting dog breeds.Smaller dogs may be hurt by unintentionally rough children, especially those under the age of 3, but a well-trained smaller dog can be a great companion for gentler kids.Due to some unscrupulous breeders and unmindful owners, a few breeds within the terrier group have developed rather notorious reputations.Often used interchangeably, the terms “mixed breed” and “crossbreed” have slightly different meanings. The sporting group comprises some of the most popular breeds, including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels.Sometimes produced randomly, but most often planned by breeders, crossbreeds result from the mating or crossing of two dogs with a different but identifiable lineage. Some of the oldest breeds of domestic dogs are the speedy sight hounds.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE
Lapping It Up Dogs use their large, spongy tongues like ladles to lap up water. You probably would like to know why these canine chums want to stick out their tongue always.Special taste receptors on their tongues are believed to allow canids to recognize chemical composition variances?such as salt and impurities?in different water sources. They – and a large common pad in the center – act as shock absorbers.Hairlessness, as seen in the Chinese crested dog, was the result of a genetic accident later perpetuated by selective breeding.Such hot-weather species as the fennec fox, a tiny African desert dweller, sports oversized ears to maximize heat loss.Species such as wolves that inhabit cold climates sport double coats, with a thick, insulating underlayer to retain heat and keep the cold at bay.Wolves have remarkably thick, two-layered coats to protect them from extreme weather. In some breeds, such as Shelties, the button ear is not always natural and must be trained from puppyhood for the proper tipped look.Other breeds such as German shepherds and golden retrievers have been trained to detect hidden drugs, explosives, and even termites. In temperate weather, canids simply breathe in through their noses to stay cool: Nasal glands secrete fluid, and its evaporation within their nasal chambers creates a cooling effect.

WHY THE HELP?
It’s also guaranteed to be safe for your mutt. You won’t need any dog training equipment. Now, if you have your carefully selected dog already, one question lies before you: How does this dog follow my commands? What if he or she doesn’t follow what I say You’re probably training your dog improperly, and you don’t know it.This program works with any dog breed.

Help getting a dog?????????????????

K, so my parents finally let me get a dog, but im not sure which breed to get. Either, the German Shepherd, Czechoslovakian wolfdog, Great Dane, and there was this other dog that looked like a Czechoslovakian wolfdog but it was black, i have never seen a black one. Which do u think? If age matters then im the youngest, 16.
2 of my cousins have German Shepherds, but give me the reason i should get them?
Excercise is not a problem i go running everyday and have a big yard

Wolfdogs and German Shepherds are EXPERIENCE owners ONLY. Great Dane i think are probably one of the better choices but still NOT ideal as 1timers dog due to there SIZE!

Remember to choose a breed that compatable to your lifestyle, and as far i’m aware you based your choice solely on looks! Which is number 1 wrong in the 1st place.

Top 5 considerations
1st thing Temperment
2nd thing Energy Requirements
3rd thing is Grooming
4th thing is Intendent living conditions
5th SUITABLITY TO YOUR LIFESTYLE!

LOOKS SHOULD BE THE LAST THING ON YOUR MIND. UNLESS YOU PLAN TO SHOW!

German Shepherds
German Shepherds are very adaptable, extremely intelligent and eager to learn. These Alsatians can be trained to an extremely high level as guide dogs, avalanche dogs, tracking dogs and police dogs, Alsatians regularly win advanced obedience and field trials. Most Shepherds are reliable, self-confident, loyal to a fault, protective, brave and even-tempered. Unfortunately some breeders are offering shy and nervous Alsatians for sale. These dogs should be avoided at all costs as they can be dangerous. Alsatians are good with children and should be socialized and obedience trained when they are puppies. Do not train Shepherds as guard dogs as they are already protective of their families. Shepherds need lots of attention and physical and mental activity to keep happy. Alsatians make excellent watchdogs. German Shepherds do better with experienced dog owners.

Unstable temperaments. German Shepherd Dogs are a dime a dozen, and most of them are bred and offered for sale by people who don’t have the slightest idea of how to breed good-tempered dogs. Obedience instructors and behavioral consultants see LOTS of German Shepherds with neurotic behaviors, including aggression, biting, sharpness, and/or extreme fearfulness.

Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. German Shepherds MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored — which they usually express by destructive chewing. Bored German Shepherds can make a shambles of your house and yard.

Providing enough socialization. Most German Shepherds have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to friendly people so they learn to recognize the normal behaviors of “good guys.” Then they can recognize the difference when someone acts abnormally. Without careful socialization, they may be suspicious of everyone, which could lead to biting. Some German Shepherds go in the opposite direction — without enough socialization, they become fearful of strangers, which can lead to defensive biting.

Animal aggression. Some German Shepherds are dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex. Some have strong instincts to chase and seize cats and other fleeing creatures. If anything goes wrong in the breeding, socializing, training, handling, or management of this breed, it is capable of seriously injuring or killing other animals.

Heavy shedding. German Shepherds shed only once a year — for 365 days. In other words, they shed constantly. You’ll find hair and fur all over your clothing, upholstery, carpeting, under your furniture, on your countertops — even in your food. Frequent vaccuming will become a way of life. Make sure you’re REALLY up for this.

Serious health problems. From hip and elbow problems, to bone diseases and cancer, to stomach disorders and skin diseases, German Shepherds are one of the riskiest of all breeds in the health department.

Legal liabilities. German Shepherds may be targeted for “banning” in certain areas, or refusal of homeowner insurance policies. In this day and age, the legal liabilities of owning any breed that looks intimidating and has a history as a guard dog should be seriously considered. People are quicker to sue if such a dog does anything even remotely questionable.

Czechoslovakian wolfdog
Temperament: Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are intelligent and trainable, but get bored with repetition and often need motivation to be trained. They are lively, active and fast. Although some are shy, this is a disqualifying trait in the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. They are fearless and courageous, and maintain a pleasant sounding howl. They bond strongly with their owner and family, but not well with other people. They are not adverse to other household pets, as they bond with them as well. Encounters with strange animals, although, may result in confrontation. Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs have intense instincts to hunt when they are pups, and this should discouraged early on in order to prevent aggressiveness in adults. Although adolescents may go through a difficult teenage life, females are generally easy to control. Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are extremely good at trailing a scent.
Living Environment: Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs need space to exercise. The best owner for this breed would be an experienced, firm owner or family who lives in a rural environment. Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are kind to pets of the family, but do not get along well with other animals, including neighboring dogs.

Great Dane
The Dane is gentle, quiet, well-mannered, loyal and affectionate towards its family. This breed is wonderfully devoted to its family and it would rather lean against you for a pat, than be aggressive towards anyone. The Dane is great with family children but small children must be supervised carefully. The Dane is so large that it must be socialized and trained to behave very cautiously around children and pets. Because the Dane is so large early obedience is essential to prevent it from exerting dominance. Young Danes, up to three years old, can be boisterous and need strict supervision. Danes make excellent watchdogs gut shouldn’t be trained to be guard dogs as they are too large to be aggressive. Great Danes are best suited for experienced dog owners.

Danes are very adaptable and can even live in a large apartment if they have lots of daily running and exercise. This breed’s fast growth makes them prone to injuries – so exercise them carefully when they are young. Great Danes love to be warm and comfortable and need a very soft bed. They can adapt to being left alone during the day if they get lots of exercise and human companionship in the morning and evening

Comparison Of Few Terms Used in Hindu and Slavic Religion

The Hebrew word for fire is Esh – the English word “ash” is derived from it.

Sanskrit, the language used long ago by religious scribes and wise men, nowadays conveying ancient messages to us from holy texts, is presently only a liturgical language like Latin. The Indian Vedas were written in Sanskrit. In addition to liturgical purposes, this language is spoken at some places even today, particularly in some institutions where people feel the need to reinvigorate it. In the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, there are villages where ordinary people speak Sanskrit. Sanskrit is used also in Mattur, a village in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Similarities between Sanskrit and other languages

Throughout their long but preserved history, the Hindu gods have taken other form than the one they had originally had in the Vedas. At some historical times, Surya was more important than Vishnu. Shiva, too, does not have his name (Shiva) in the Vedas. Scholars believe that a much older name represents him instead – Rudra, which sounds like the word used for the most ancient Slavic god – Rod, who was the primordial god – creator of the universe.

The origin of the word “red” (English), or “rot” (German) probably comes from the primordial adoration of the god of fire, most likely a deity like Slavic Rod, Hindu Agni or Rudra. You will find many words with similar sounding both in European languages and Sanskrit – for example, the Sanskrit word “rakta” – English “red” (“rudy” in Czech, “rouge” in French, “rojo” in Spanish, etc.). The origin of the word “red” most probably dwells in fire, which had been adored and personified by all ancient and tribal cultures.

Every religion, although surely partially based on real events, somehow deforms or changes over time. Slavic people have a legend about the creation of the world:

In the beginning, there was only the great darkness and endless chaos. Its waves whirled in the empty space and flowed around the golden egg, which was in the middle. Rod – the originator of everything – was in the egg. When Rod uttered his first word, his son Svarog was born.

The Slavic creation legends slightly vary in dependence on the region (Serbia, Slovenia, Russia, Poland, etc.). Swarog or Svarog is the Slavic sun and fire god. In the Slavic religion, Svarga is heaven. In Sanskrit, Svarga is heaven too.

Some Hindu gods have remarkable similarity with Slavic deities – both in pronunciation and in significance. Sanskrit and Slavic words may not be always entirely similar (in pronunciation and connotation), but may carry remarkable elements of similarities like in the case of the Slavic god Veles (god of shepherds and a great serpent), who bears a resemblance to Vedic Vala, a Hindu Naga (serpent) and Asura (mostly sinful and power-seeking deities) mentioned in Rig Veda over twenty times.

Lord Shiva’s attributes are materialized in a Slavic female deity called Siwa, Ziva, or Zivena – goddess of fertility and love. A similarity with Sanskrit appears in the fact that the word “ZIVA” means (in Sanskrit) “the one who is kind”. Unlike war or scorpion goddesses, goddesses of love are kind for most of the time.

There is yet another similarity between Shiva and Ziva – goddess Kali and Morena, the sister of Ziva. Both Kali (Hindu goddess) and Morena (Slavic goddess) are goddesses of death. In Hinduism, Kali is tightly associated with Shiva, as she is a form of Durga, the Shiva’s consort. There is not a big difference between these two, as Shiva’s association to Kali is as strong as Ziva’s connection to Morena. If we look at similarity in pronunciation, Slavic Morena has its equivalent in the Sanskrit word maraNaanta (coming to death).

As concerns symbolism, lingam is a Hindu (Shiva’s) symbol for fertility – the same dimension that ancient Slavs attributed to Ziva.

Vedic god Surya has his Slavic equivalent in goddess of beauty – Zora, Zarya, or Zori. There is also the word Zorya, which identifies less important goddesses – Slavic guardians of the dawn, but connection to the sun is indisputable.

Brief summary of Slavic gods

Rod (Creator) > Svarog (sun god and helper creator) > and his three sons > Svarozic, Dazhdbog, Perun.

Triglav is a Slavic word for god “with three heads”, almost identical to Hindu Trinity (Trimurti). The oldest meaning of the word Triglav characterized the following three deities – Svarog, Perun, and Dazhdbog; however, Veles or Svantovit later replaced Dazhdbog. Triglav has its Hindu equivalent in Brahma (almost always pictured with three heads), or Dattatreya – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva in one – an incarnation of the divine Trinity (Trimurti). Hindus believe that this form of God had once appeared here on earth.

Slavonic svastika

Hindus use svastika as a symbol of good luck. Boreyko coat of arms is the symbol of svastika pointing to the left; it had been used in Poland. Svastika can also be found in symbolism of Svarog.

Christians destroyed almost all cultural heritages of the Slavs, so our knowledge about Slavic deities is not so comprehensive as in Hinduism, which has continued almost entirely preserved from the ancient times until today.

A few Sanskrit and Russian words

Slavic languages are similar, so the comparison shown below is made of words that sound equally and mean the same thing in Russian, Czech and Slovak. If you want to find out more about Sanskrit words, visit this website – http://spokensanskrit.de/

The first words on the left are in Russian, then follow words in Sanskrit and finally you may learn what they mean in English:

vsegda sadaA always
putnik pathika pilgrim (or traveler)
zit jiivati live (“jiivati” is pronounced similarly in Russian)
kogda kada when
nebo naaka heaven
snežnij sahima snowy
mama maatR mom
brat bhraatR brother

We can also look at similarities in grammar. Slovaks and Russians use vocative, which is a term hardly explainable in English in one word, as English (and many other European languages) does not use it (Sanskrit does). Vocative is scarcely present in Slovak, but it still occurs. The Wordnet dictionary of synonyms describes the term “vocative” as “the case (in some inflected languages) used when the referent of the noun is being addressed”. In addition, English and possibly many other European languages, except for Russian and other Slavic languages, do not have, for example, other cases like the locative case.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. Exodus, 3:2

german shepherd brown color
how big would a chow german shepherd mix get?

I looked at the chow/gs that I got along with the others that were left for sale in his litter. He is all black and is about 20 pounds and is roughly 5 months old. He looks like he is all chow and doesn’t have much gs in him. But the rest of them had the coat and coloring of a german shepherd..tan and darker brown on their back (what a german shepherd looks like) I guess I picked the runt. I dont mind though, I love him!
Anyway, just wondering if he seems to be more of a chow (face and tail) than german shepherd then how big do you think he would get?
Thankkss!!!!

mix…you never know.

I got a GSD/Chow mix (my avitar)..he’s more on the GSD side, if you go by looks.

He was about 30 + lbs at 5 mo. I would say that yours might get up to 40 or something like that, full grown. But that’s only a guess.

German Shepherd Coat Colors and Patterns Vary Greatly

Concerning the GSD and German Shepherd coat colors, the breed standard from the SV specifically states: “The color of the GSD is in itself not important and has no effect on the character of the dog or on its fitness for work and should be a secondary consideration for that reason. The final color of a young dog can only be ascertained when the outer coat has developed.”

Of all undesirable things to try to eliminate and to consider in a GSD (aka the Alsatian), coat color should be at the bottom of the list. Good pigment should be sought after but many factors such as health and temperament, to name a few, should be much more important than coat color which should always be subordinate to structure, gait, type, and character and should never take precedence over the working ability of the dog. Eye color should be dark and nose pigment should be black as well.

Concerning the coat, the SV breed standard states the following: “The normal (stock) coated GSD should carry a thick undercoat and the outer coat should be as dense as possible, made up of straight hard close lying hairs. The hair on the head and ears, front of the legs, paws and toes is short. On the neck it is longer and thicker, on some males forming a slight ruff. The hair grows longer on the back of the legs as far down as the pastern and the stifle, and forms fairly thick trousers on the hindquarters. There is no hard or fast rule for the length of the hair, but short mole-type coats are faulty.” “No good dog is a bad color” — Max von Stephanitz (breed founder of the dog) concerning coat colors.

Ask just about anybody to describe a German Shepherd Dog and they will almost always mention the “saddle Back” markings. It is also just as possible for the GSD to be one solid color such as black (solid white is considered a conformation disqualification for showing by the AKC) or sable. Sable coat colors are easily identified by multi-colored individual hairs all over the body. Sable GSD’s may also be masked by dark or black guard hairs.

Alsatian coat color patterns may include any of the following: black & tan, black & red, black & cream, solid black, solid white, (considered a conformation disqualification), sable (also called agouti or wolf gray, in various colorations), black & silver, liver (rare – conformation fault) and blue (rare – considered a conformation fault).

Richer pigmentation is preferred, color wise. While I won’t delve deeply into the science of genetics (feel free to do that on your own if interested), just know that the liver color comes as the result of matched recessives in the black series and the blue color happens as the result of matched recessives in the dilution series.

Coat colors and inheritance in the GSD is very complex and controlled by several series of genes. Following is a very brief description and summary of the various gene series in the GSD responsible for color based on information from “The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History” and “Practical Genetics for Dog Breeders”, both by Malcom Willis. Both of these books should be considered as required reading for any serious fan and even more importantly for breeders. Another suggested resource is “The German Shepherd Today” by Winifred Strickland and James “Jimmy” Moses.

THE AGOUTI SERIES

The basic body color of the GSD is controlled by the genes. The order of coat colors dominance is as follows: golden sable, gray sable, saddle marked black and tan, bi-color* black and tan (bi-color is where the dog only has tan on the legs and face, not on the body), and black.

Additionally, know that the black gene is recessive to all the other colors in GSD’s. Solid black German Shepherds bred to solid blacks German Shepherds will only produce blacks. The sable colors are dominant over the other colors and patterns in the breed.

THE BLACK SERIES

This gene controls the black pigment formation on the GSD, not the hair color. The German Shepherd coat colors order of dominance is exactly as follows: Black pigment including nose, eyerims and pads; Carrier for liver color; Liver color – brown black colors, brown nose, eye rims and pads.

Note: most GSDs are considered black pigment including nose, eyerims and pads.

THE WHITE SERIES

White coat color in the German Shepherd Dog is recessive to all other colors. In order to get a white coat color in the German Shepherd, both parents must carry the white gene (either be white themselves or be carriers.) The order of dominance is as follows: Melanin is produced. (Standard GSD’s colors have this); Partial albinism (not seen); White coat with dark eyes and nose (not albino); Yellowish coat collar (proposed).

THE COLOR SERIES

This controls the intensity of the non-black coloration. The order of dominance is as follows: Lightest tan (cream); Intermediate tan (tan); Darkest tan (red).

The intensity of the color series determines whether GSD’s with color (i.e. not all- black or all-white recessives) will be black & cream, black & tan or black & red.

Coat Lengths in GSD’s

Short-coated German Shepherd’s maintain a short coat, which lies close to the body. These dogs usually have less undercoat.

“Plush” Coated GSD’s have a medium length coat with a thin, fluffy under coat. These dogs do not have any feathering as in the long coated GSD’s.

Long coated German Shepherd’s have much longer fur around their ears, on the backs of their legs, chest and tail (feathering) than other German Shepherd’s.

THE DILUTION SERIES

This controls how intense the black pigment will appear on your German Shepherd. The order of dominance is as follows: Dense pigment; blue dilution.

Black pigment combined with blue dilution will produce a blue coated German Shepherd which looks as though it has a dusty or flour sheen.

THE MASK SERIES

This controls whether or not a mask appear on your German Shepherd. The order of dominance is as follows: a black mask on the face; dark coat with no mask; Brindle (rare, will be seen as striping on the legs); clear tan.

All these genes put together determine your own German Shepherd’s coat colors.

german shepherd cartoons
who will win the Vote for the Dog Breed that will get it’s own Disney cartoon movie like 101 Dalmations did?

What dog Breed should Disney do a cartoon movie about ? Like they did with 101 Dalmations! The main character’s will be puppies!

#1 Siberian Husky
#2 Australian Shepherd
#3 German Shepherd
#4 Labrador Retriever
#5 Golden Retriever
#6 Rottweiler
#7 Boxer
#8 Beagle
#9 Dachshund

Disney would sell MILLIONS of DVDs if they pick these breeds to Star in the next cartoon movie!

I want 101 Siberian Huskies to WIN!!!!
I agree there should be a LAW .
Only Qualified breeder’s who have at least 5 Generations of Perfect healthy dogs should be aloud to breed dogs and everyone who does not have a licence to breed dogs MUST pay fines! and go to jail for working for a puppymill or a backyard breeder!!!!

I would not want to see any of those dogs subjected to a movie of any kind. They show these animals in an overly positive light, so many people (especially those with children) run out and buy these “Icon” dogs.
What I would love to see is a movie or cartoon about the plight of the Hienz 57 dog promoting the re-homing of the millions of homeless animals that we all ready have.

The Top 20 Absolutely Most Famous Dogs

I’ve been compiling a list of famous dogs for my pet numerology website for some time now.  I know which my favorites are, but I wondered which are the most famous overall.  There were so many great famous dogs that I did five alphabetical gourps, with a final round of the top most famous dogs.  This is that final round, and I’ll reveal which are the most famous of these terrific dogs.

The top twenty most famous of all dogs (based on online chatter) are:

20. Goofy – from the classic Walt Disney cartoons

19. Chloe – a Chihuahua who is a lead character in the movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”

18. Mr. Peabody – who appeared in “Peabody’s Improbable History” cartoons with his boy Sherman in the 1960s

17. Benji – who starred of a series of “Benji” movies

16. Buddy – a Labrador Retriever who belonged to US President Bill Clinton

15. Gromit – from the “Wallace and Gromit” animated short films

14. Tinkerbell – a Chihuahua belonging to socialite Paris Hilton

13. Dogbert – from the “Dilbert” comic strip

12. Snowy – the White Wire Fox Terrier traveled with Tintin in the “Adventures of Tintin” comic books

11. Barney – a Scottish Terrier belonging to US President George W. Bush

10. Lassie – the Collie is a character seen in movies since the 1930s

9. Santa’s Little Helper – the Simpson’s family dog on the animated TV series “The Simpsons”

8. Bo – the Portuguese Water Dog belonging to US President Barack Obama and the First Family

7. Snoopy – the Beagle is a character in the “Peanuts” comic strip

6. Bolt – the white German Shepherd who is the title character of the animated movie “Bolt”

5. Eddie – the Jack Russell Terrier from the TV series “Frasier”

4. Odie – from the “Garfield” comic strip

3. Dug – the talking dog from the Pixar Animated movie “Up”

2. Scooby Doo – from the “Scooby-Doo” cartoons and movies

…and the most famous dog is…

1. Marley – the Labrador Retriever who is the title character in the book and movie “Marley and Me”

So a nice mix of breeds in the top twenty with two Yellow Labs (Marley and Buddy), two Chihuahuas (Tinkerbell and Chloe), a Portuegses Water Dog (Bo), a German Shepherd (Bolt), a Beagle (Snoopy), a Colie (Lassie), a Jack Russell Terrier (Eddie), a Scottish Terrier (Barney), and a White Wire Fox Terrier (Snowy).

I was a little surprised by the order of the top twenty.  I always think Snoopy will be the most famous, but he was down at number seven.  I’m sure Marley and Scooby Doo benefit from having their names in the title of their movie, book, or TV series.

Surprisingly, five of the top twenty dogs are real life dogs, as fictional dogs tend to be more famous than their real world counterparts.  I’m sure it doesn’t hurt that most of these dogs have had their own books, movies, or extended press coverage.

I compiled this list by searching for the dog names listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.

Check out my complete list of Famous Dogs at www.PetNum.com.

German Shepherd Dog Characteristics

Other Names of The German Shepherd Dog:  Alsatian, Deutscher Schaferhund, GSD.

German Shepherd Dog Temperament

The German Shepherd dog is amongst the most intelligent of dogs and its versatility and excellence in performing all manner of activities has secured its eternal position in the hall of fame when it comes to policing duties, search and rescue, military functions such as bomb sniffing and even as sight-seeing dogs for people who are blind or those with impaired eyesight. The German Shepherd is a quick study and due to their innate high intelligence are very easy to train.

These dogs are active, alert and like many other animals of a high intelligence and active nature the German Shepherd needs to be constantly challenged and stimulated both physically and mentally to avoid becoming a nuisance. That said, this dog breed makes a great companion and is both brave and loyal. Though some dogs tend to be somewhat aloof and wary by and large this dog breed makes for a great family pet and they generally get on well with children. Occasionally certain dogs may become a tad domineering with children which may manifest in the form of the German Shepherd trying to herd them about; in keeping with its breeding pedigree.

German Shepherd dogs have excellent watchdog ability and are typically wary of both strangers and other dogs. Early socialization is a must if your dog is going to be around other animals. As far as climate tolerance is concerned these dogs adapt fairly well to moderate cold as well as moderate heat, though extremes in either direction don’t go down well.

German Shepherd Dog Grooming & Exercise Requirements

The German Shepherd boasts a high energy level and thus this dog breed requires plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Its grooming requirements however are not quite as demanding and its coat only requires brushing once or twice a week. The German Shepherd is a moderate to heavy shedder and thus is perhaps not the best choice of dog for allergy sufferers.

German Shepherd Dog Appearance

The body of the German Shepherd dog is typically longer than it is tall and in the modern variant when the animal is standing the body slopes downwards as though the dog is poised to spring off of its hind legs. This was not always the case, the early variant of the German Shepherd dog having a squarer body and less slanting haunches. The tail is usually bushy and hangs with a slight curve.

This dog breed boasts an athletic build and erect ears atop a head with a pointed snout which enhances the alert appearance of the dog. Coat color may vary and includes the following: black, black and tan and sable. From a show dog perspective white-coated dogs are not allowed although of recent there is a movement for such specimens to be represented in their own sub-category.

This dog breed has a double coat with a thick outer coat comprised of close lying medium-length hair that may be straight or slightly wavy.

Weight:  Males:  75 – 100 pounds

            Females:   60 – 80  pounds

Height:    Males:  24 – 26 inches

             Females:  22 – 24 inches

German Shepherd Dog Health Issues/Life Expectancy

This dog breed on average has a lifespan of 10 – 12 years. Due to rather intense in breeding over the years the German Shepherd dog suffers from a number of genetic disorders which include the following:

Major Concerns:

CHD

Elbow Dysplasia

Minor Concerns:

Panosteitis

vWD

Degenerative Myelopathy

Cauda Equina

Skin Allergies

Hot Spots

Neoplasms

Pannus

Cataract

Gastric Torsion

Perianal Fistulas

Cardiomyopathy

Hemangiosarcoma

German Shepherd dogs are also extremely susceptible to a potentially fatal systemic infection from the fungus Aspergillus.

German Shepherd Dog History

The modern German Shepherd dog is the end result of a concerted effort in the late 19th century to breed the perfect German sheep herding dog. Up until that time each district boasted its own distinct herding dog. To achieve the perfect herding dog various dog breeds from the north were crossbred with those from the central district ultimately resulting with the forbearer of the modern German Shepherd.

The goal of the German Shepherd dog breeding program was to produce a dog that could watch out for and control straying sheep from the rest of the flock without spooking the entire flock. Thus unlike cattle herding dogs it was undesirable for the German Shepherd dog to exhibit leg nipping and neither could it control its wards by barking at them because either one of those attributes would more than likely cause the entire flock to panic!

In essence the German Shepherd dog breeding program had to come up with an extremely intelligent, versatile, swift and independent thinking breed of dog that executed its duties in a precise, swift, calm and steady manner.

Between 1899 and 1901 a specialist breed club was established and was originally headquartered in Stuttgart before moving to Munich and then finally ending up in Berlin. This club was known as Der Verein Fur Schaferhunde (SV for short), and this organization’s primary goal and purpose was to oversee the continued positive development of the German Shepherd dog breed.

Within a decade of its breeding the German Shepherd dog had soon become one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Its rising star in popularity was slightly marred by the occurrence of the two world wars, when it was considered prudent in both Britain and France to refer to the dog breed as either an Alsatian or simple the Shepherd Dog to avoid the inevitable backlash at the time associated with the word German incorporated in the dog breed’s name.

German Shepherd Shedding Problem

October 25th, 2009 admin No comments

german shepherd shedding problem
Doubts and questions about the Furminater?

Unlike most German Shepherds, my dog did not shed or caste her coat in the house. My floors were never thick with hair. When I groomed her, it seemed to take forever to get the undercoat out. Consequently I bought a Furminater. After using this several times a week and grooming her in the garden for a lenthy period, I find that she always looks tuffty and un groomed and my carpets are a mess. Has anyone had this problem and does the Furminater actually promote the growth of hair. Before I used this, she did not have a lot of hair on her belly, now it’s thick and she is shedding/casting all over the house. Should I stop using the Furminator and revert to my previous grooming equipment.
Mr Natural.I have had GSD’s forever, I know that they normally shed and caste their coats on the carpets. My latest GSD did not do this until I used the Furminator. I spend more time grooming her now than I did before

I haven’t used the furminater, but I have a German shepherd,
and believe me they shed all year long. They aren’t like most
other dogs that shed for the summer, its 365 days a year. I
use a good grooming brush and I can get piles of hair out of
him everyday. That’s the price you pay for a German shepherd.

Looking For the Perfect Gift? – Portrait Art is the Perfect Answer

Many gift giving occasions arise for each of us throughout the course of every year. There are the birthdays of our friends and family members. There are anniversaries – our own and those of parents, siblings and friends. There are graduations, and other rites of passage such as quince anos and bar/bat mitzvahs. There are the winter holidays with their tradition of gift giving. And there are those gift giving occasions that come up spontaneously in which we simply want to convey the message “You are special to me and I care about you”.

When one of these gift giving occasions looms on your horizon you begin the search for the perfect gift, the unique gift, the gift no one would anticipate, the gift that the ‘person who has everything’ does not have. This search can be daunting, tiring, and seemingly impossible to achieve in some cases.

Commissioning an artist to create a portrait commemorating a special event, or an everyday moment in someone’s life, makes a truly unique gift. A photograph is all that is needed for a portrait artist to turn a person’s image into a work of art. And you can bet that a gift like that will be completely unexpected and totally one-of-a-kind. It will also be cherished for many years to come.

So the next time you want to give your wife a perfect anniversary gift, consider having a portrait painted of the children, or a portrait of the two of you, either from a photo taken on your wedding day, or from a current photo. When your mother’s birthday is drawing near and you really want to give her something fresh and different, have an artist create a portrait of her grandchild.  And when your choice for your brother’s Christmas present keeps eluding you, but you want to give him something he would never anticipate, have an artist do a portrait of his best-buddy german shepherd. The possibilities are endless.

You get the picture. A picture is worth a thousand words and giving a work of portrait art can be the perfect gift. Unique, ever so personal and guaranteed to be very appreciated.

German Shepherd Weights less?

My 1 year old german shepherd male weighs 23 kgs (51 lbs). He is 23″ at the withers. I read on a website that for this age he should weigh over 30 kgs.
Here i’ve got sum pics of him…

Is he normal?? he is 1 year old.. wat should i feed him to gain weight and size? til wat age do they grow???

He doesn’t look under-nourished.
It sounds as though you have a runt.
The required height & weight ranges for firsl-class adukt male GSDs are 60-65cm height at the withers, weight 30-40 kg. The absolute height range is 59-66cm, which is 23 5/8 to 26 inches.
GSDs keep DEVELOPING until 3-3½ years old, but it is deepening and muscling up and changing the set of croup, not growing taller.
As your lad is only 23 inches at 12 months old, and most GSDs are taller at 10-11 months than they end up as by 2-2½ years old, I don’t expect him to “make it” as show & breeding stock.

But so what?
No-one who has to ask their GSD questions here paid for a show & breeding prospect, they paid for a pet.
And many many sizes & shapes of dog can be marvellous pets.
So enjoy what you’ve got – being a GSD breeder, I see physical aspects of him that I don’t want, but you’re not a GSD breeder, so what counts most is his attitude, his behaviour, the way he fits into your household. And you’ve expressed no concerns about THAT. I doubt you have any worries about his pigmentation, either.

If he’s not already neutered, he is now old enough – his growth plates should have finished extending. But there’s no rush – if you wish, you can wait another 3-4 months to see whether he calls me a liar by having a late growth spurt.

As he lacks a breeder you can ask questions of, and you obviously do not belong to any GSD training club, you most DEFINITELY should belong to some of the 300+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you what they like to discuss, and how active they are.

Miniature Pinscher Breed Information

DogBarkings.com

DESCRIPTION

The Miniature Pinscher is a breed with sleek, clean lines, well muscled and compact in build, whilst small in stature.  They have square proportions and a clean-cut, well-chiseled frame.  The coat is short and hard, with a smoothness that lies tight to the body and covers the dog from head to toe.  The coat is easy to care for and is straight, coming in the colors: red (the most common), black and tan, or chocolate.  The dog belongs to the Toy group, yet despite being a small breed, it possesses sturdiness, with a well developed chest, powerful thighs and a unique, high-stepping gait.  The eyes of the Miniature Pinscher are dark, sometimes even black, with an oval appearance.  Tails are usually docked, however in some countries this process is now illegal (the United Kingdom is one of these), nevertheless the tails base is set high on the back.  Ears are also usually cropped (where allowed) and take on a triangular, erect shaped.  This helps to give the dog an alert and intelligent demeanor.  The muzzle of the Miniature Pinscher meets in a scissor bite and has surprising force for such a small dog.  The nose is black and finishes a muzzle in proportion to the rest of the body.  Their front legs are straight (dewclaws are normally removed), whilst their topline is level, or sloping slightly toward the rear.  They have small cat-like paws.  The high-stepping gate is also referred to as a hackney-like action and the Miniature Pinscher holds its head high and drives with power from the rear.

TEMPERAMENT

The Miniature Pinscher is an energetic, proud and lively breed of dog.  They have a hardiness and courage that defies their small stature and they retain much loyalty to their masters.  Proper leadership is a must in owning a sound and happy Miniature Pinscher.  It has been said that they do better with one or two owners although they are able to become part of families providing every member of the family is able to display an outranking of the dog within the home.  The first stage in ensuring a happy relationship with your Miniature Pinscher is early socialization as a puppy with other dogs, humans and children in particular.  Small dog Syndrome is a common occurrence with this breed as with many other Toy Breeds.  It is a result of humans allowing smaller dogs to take on the pack leader role, by not ensuring correct discipline and behavior.  It is more common in smaller dogs because there is a lesser feeling of immediate danger or concern when dealing with a far smaller animal.  Lets face it a German Shepherd barking loudly and looking aggressive is probably going to warrant a more concerned attitude than a Miniature Pinscher would.  Being a pack leader is a stressful job for a Miniature Pinscher in the human world and can lead to many unwanted behavior problems such as nipping or biting, persistent barking, dog aggression and suspicion toward strangers.  Having said this, the Miniature Pinscher if trained properly and given the correct leadership can be a highly intelligent and highly trainable breed of dog.  The Miniature Pinscher is also naturally territorial so it should be given a clearly defined place to sleep.  They are in fact very keen to learn and please once their pack role has been established.  If properly managed the Miniature Pinscher can make a fabulous and wonderful companion dog.

HEIGHT: Dogs 25-30cm (10-12inches), Bitches 25-28cm (10-11inches)
WEIGHT: Dogs 4-5kg (8-10lbs), Bitches 4kg (8-9lbs)

HEALTH

Generally a very hardy and healthy breed, Miniature Pinschers can suffer occasionally from heart defects, patella luxation, cervical dry disk, Legg-Perthes, hypothyroidism and mucopolysacharidosis, although these are very rare in comparison to other breeds.

LIVING CONDITIONS

The Miniature Pinscher being a Toy Breed is perfectly suitable for apartment life, despite being very active indoors.  They have an insatiable curiosity both outside and inside the home and so it is advisable that care should be taken with items such as bottle tops, as they may be a choking hazard.  They also love to escape and explore, so if allowed to run free in a yard, or back garden a high enough fence is needed to stop their determined efforts to escape.

EXERCISE

Play alone will not sufficiently deal with the Miniature Pinschers exercise requirements.  A daily walk is a must as it fulfills their instinctive need, as a dog, to walk.  Off leash play and running is also excellent providing you can safely control where the dog can or will go.

LIFE EXPECTANCY: 15+ years
LITTER SIZE: 2-6 Puppies

GROOMING

The Miniature Pinscher has an easy-to-care for coat which should be combed and brushed with a firm bristle brush from time  to time.  Shampoo only when necessary.  A warm damp cloth or chamois can be used to clean loose hairs and give the coat a nice shine.  Nails and ears should be clipped and cleaned respectively from time to time.  They are an average shedder.

HISTORY

Many people mistake the Miniature Pinscher as a descendant of the larger Doberman Pinscher, not least because of their similar appearance, albeit with a size difference.  However the breed is older than the Doberman Pinscher and is a result of the cross-breeding of several terrier-like dogs with other breeds, including, the German Pinscher, Dachshund and possibly the Italian Greyhound.  Its initial working role was as a ratter in horse stables, a job to which it excelled.  First depicted at the beginning of the 17th Century through sculpture and painting, the Miniature Pinscher only found its place in written documents about 200 years ago.  The main reason for the confusion between the Doberman Pinscher and the Miniature Pinschers relationship, may stem from the 1930´s when the breed standard for the Miniature Pinscher stated that, the breed should resemble a smaller version of the Doberman Pinscher, when in fact the Doberman Pinscher was created in 1890 by Lois Doberman to resemble the Miniature Pinscher.  Thus it is the Doberman Pinscher that is named after the Miniature Pinscher and not the opposite.  The Miniature Pinscher was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1925, after coming to the United States in 1919.  Referred to as ´The King of the Toy Dogs´ the breed is a regular at dog shows and is one of the most popular breeds in the US today.
