My german shepherd husky puppy weighs about 24 pounds at 4 months? He is male and is not underweight just small according to the vet. Is this ok? Will he always stay a small dog or will he get bigger? I just changed his food to Purina Beneful and he likes it a lot. Is there anything I can do to make him bigger? Thanks.
I’m not quite sure how much they should weigh at four months because usually the the pup should stay home with his/her mom until six months.

german shepherd loyalty Why do you discourage people to not own a certain breed?
I was told to get a labrador or the terrible golden retriever since I was a first time dog owner. Everyone discouraged me from getting a Samoyed, Husky, German Shepherd, Kuvasz and Alaskan Malamute.
I decided to get a White German Shepherd (when a lot of the users on here told me not to get one). I found that working with the dog and showing it compassion has made it into a loyal pet which is not destructive and which loves everyone in my family. I have seen the dog showcase me loyalty.
My neighbor owns a Kuvasz and he is a first time dog owner, sure the dog gives it some difficulty but other than that it is mainly calm and rarely does anything stupid. My neighbor also loves his dog.
I read all these answers of people heavily discouraging a person not to get a certain dog breed and I believe that is just superficial and stupid. Why not tell the person what they would have to do to own that breed?
Also I am getting an Alaskan Malamute soon.
We say that because we need to speak to generalities. Yes, there are Rotties who can be led about by small children, but they are the exceptions. An average Rottie would ignore a weak owner and make his own decisions. Yes, there is the occasional Cavalier who will try to take your hand off if you reach down, even after knowing you for a year. But, the average Cavalier is a sweet natured, soft mouthed, little lover. So, all the people can do on this website is speak to the average.
It’s great that your neighbor’s Kuvasz is so mild mannered. That is not the norm. People familiar with the breed will caution against having one as a first time owner because they are physically strong and are apt to challenge other dogs and non-family people. I had a 14-month old male on a lead once that nearly dragged me to the ground lunging at a caged dog. The youngster had never shown any aggression up to that point, but adolescence came suddenly. Again, we can only speak to the average experience about the most common characteristics.
Trained German Shepherd For Sale: Is it Really An Option?
When looking for a good companion and protection pets, German shepherds are a good option. Here’s a question though; should you be going for trained German shepherd for sale or should be buying a pup instead? Sure, having an already trained pet around can be a big plus, but there are still issues that you might end up dealing with.
Some of the issues you might encounter when opting for trained German shepherds is the price. Considering that they have already undergone and completed the training process, the price you’ll be paying for in the end will generally reflect this. Depending on the skills that were instilled in the dog (whether basic or advanced) you might actually end up dealing with four, or maybe even five digit prices instead of just three.
Another issue you might end up dealing with would be in terms of loyalty. Sure, the dog will be well trained, and will provide you with the protection that you need but deep at the back of your head the issue of loyalty will always be nagging. As said, loyalty can never be bought, and in terms of dogs, this is particularly true. So do think about it deeply first if you’re really comfortable with this issue.
Another issue will have to deal with familiarity. You’d have to remember that by the time you purchased your German shepherd he will be mature enough, meaning it might take quite a while before he really starts settling in with your family. Now, you might think that this is worth the risk but in essence you really have no idea as to the behavior of the dog. If they are aggressive, or tend to get stressed out with changing environments then it’s not really something that you want to have around, especially if you have kids.
Aside from the issues mentioned above, there might be other things that you will have to deal with when opting for trained German shepherd for sale. So do think about it more first. Remember that with the right information in hand; you will also be able to successfully train your German shepherd without running into much trouble.

german shepherd fear why is my german shepherd so unapproachable while on lead?
My shepherd is terrible while out on a walk. you can only get so close and then he goes into full attack mode. he’s been obedience trained and everything. i just don’t know how to get him over this fear of strangers. it is def fear because he’ll pop his anals and you can tell by his body posturing. help!!
dogs feel trapped , like they cant escape on leashes. so they go into full defend mode. their is really no easy way of breaking that, but what i did to help my dog is more socialization. i took my dog on walks in crowded city streets where their was to many people for him to focus on one. seemed to help. and for meeting people one on one, try telling your dog no in a commanding voice, and try to ignore the person, showing your dog you dont even care about it and their is nothing to be afraid of.

Could anyone else recommend any reputable breeders in Ohio, or close to Ohio. I’m definitely willing to drive several hours to visit the pups, and possible get one later on.
Well I, for one, would NOT be buying there.
First warning was that Google instantly found 1490 references! Obviously a BUSINESS rather than a genuine breeder.
Second warning is that the first page I went to stated “_Old_Fashion_” – a term that is both ungrammatical AND instantly demonstrates that the person arrogantly chooses to totally ignore the International Standard of the GSD (see http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc ) which has been developed during the past 110 years by VERY experienced experts in herding and protection and guide-dog work, and approved by the WUSV (World Union of GSD Clubs, with about 77 member nations) in 1991 and 2009.
That first page also featured a white GSD, some heavily-muscled pooches that looked like GSD-Mastiff or GSD-PBT crosses and were definitely too massive & lumbering for sheep work or sitting in an S&R helicopter or monoplane, plus a couple that had VERY narrow muzzles. So obviously they not only don’t obey the International Standard, they don’t even have a consistent”‘type”.
I had to waste a lot of time waiting for pages-with-too-many-pics (always a sign of an ignorant “breeder” who sells by cute photos instead of by the attainments of their breeding stock) to transfer through the Internet before finding, on about the 10th try, a page that stated – for just ONE pooch – that it was OFA Good. Ignoring that OFA runs the worst HD scheme still around (so I didn’t bother going to the OFA site to see how many of this kennel’s stock have actually been xrayed with passes – one of OFA’s sins is that it allows owners to NOT have their Fails displayed), that is totally unacceptable – EVERY breeding animal of anything like Border Collie & GSD size MUST have hips & elbows scored.
I found NO mention of show gradings or titles, no mention of training qualifications, no pedigrees, no Breed Survey Classifications.
Although she proclaims a Guarantee, I could NOT find it in her web-site, so suspect that it plus the Contract are designed to protect the breeder, not the buyer.
And then I looked at the page showing her kennels. Ye GODS! I know several people who run boarding kennels – THEY don’t have as many kennels as this woman has!
GSDs are supposed to be raised as FAMILY DOGS.
But this operator is obviously an arrogant BYBer who has “progressed” to puppy-miller, and has a web-site full of “spin” phrases to appeal to the ignorant gullibles.
No way does her web-site qualify for listing in The_GSD_Source. Click http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/message/2 to see what honest, up-front breeders are expected to publish. NO-ONE can recommend a breeder without knowing WHAT you want to achieve with your pet. Instead of listening to strangers on the Internet you should be attending dog-training classes and seeing for yourself what different lines look like & act like.
You should also be asking questions in some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

I was looking to buy a puppy and I want to buy a German Shepherd. I live in the Columbus, Ohio region and I was just wondering if anyone knew of any kennels or breeders of any sort that possibly had any full blood German Shepherd pups?
another option for you would be to check with the vet you will be taking your pup to. they might be able to steer you in the direction of a reputable breeder in your area. also another avenue is to contact a Shutzhund club in your area. because these people work with GSD’s and some are even breeders who are quite reputable.
the reason I say reputable breeders is because they are out to improve the breed and are concerned with the health of the puppies as well as there temperament. they offer health guarantee’s and just don’t sell to anyone…they are picky about who they give their pups to.
there are so many “backyard” breeders who don’t care about the breed or know about the breed and the problems that these dogs can have…they are out to make a profit on a popular breed. so be very careful…you are about to spend a lot of money on a dog and you want the best qualities of the breed to be in that dog….in other words…you get what you pay for. on avg. a pet quality GSD will run you anywhere from $700-$1000. if you are interested in Shutzhund and want to train your dog in tracking and protection work a good German bred GSD will run you more.

My neighbor has 4 huge dogs (German Shepherd mixes and a Great Pyrenees). They came onto my property yesterday and attacked my 6 month old puppy who was playing in the yard. My puppy is now at the vet for the next week at least with blood loss and a shredded hind leg. Those dogs would have killed him if my son hadn’t run them off him. We have no county animal control and the city won’t take county dogs so I have to go to court. Could the court rule for these dogs to be put down? They attacked my puppy for no reason. I fear for my family’s safety now. These are HUGE dogs.
I didn’t see your first question till after you chose a best answer. Your best answer was excellent, but I added comments with more suggestions.
We don’t know where you live, so we can’t tell you what you can do legally. If you live in SE MO, I have a friend with pyrs who has problems with wild dogs in his area, many of whom live with neighbors who don’t feed the dogs and mistreat them which turns the dogs into vicious animals. As a pyr owner, I’m amazed that one was a pyr; that doesn’t match the pyr personality. They are not prone to attack. Pyrs posture and do pre-emptive barking to ward off predators, so if a pyr was in the group, that’s really bad and indicative that the dogs are not fed and are abused to make them vicious.
GSD’s however, are attack dogs. They ARE fighting dogs, and having them attack your dog doesn’t surprise me. Their owner is responsible for their viciousness. KKingS was right about the prey drive of the GSD’s but she was wrong about the pyr.
Check with your local sheriff to find out what recourse they offer since these dogs ARE a threat to your family and the sheriff should take some kind of action to prevent injury to the human members of your family, even if he doesn’t have any rules to guide him on protect your pup.
Ask the vet for extra copies of the bill, and give it to the neighbor and request he pay the vet. If he’s reputable, he will do so as it’s his responsibility since his dogs entered your property to attack your dog.
IF YOU DIDN’T TAKE PHOTOS, GO NOW TO THE VET’S TO TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR DOG WHILE INJURED so you can prove all the damages done. You’ll also want a full written report from the vet on his letterhead indicating all the injuries.
You could take them to court on one of the TV court shows. Apply to be on judge Alex! He’ll give you a proper settlement.
A LOT depends on where you live and what the laws are there.
My friend in SE MO doesn’t have support. If you’re in SE MO, I can put you in touch with a man who has had to deal with wild dogs in his area and lack of good help from his sheriff and a bad “good-old-boy” attitude in his area.
I have a solution that you actually might do well with.
I already told you in comments on your other post to put up a hot fence. You get the supplies from TSC and put on a 50mi or 100mi Zareba charger. This will both keep your dog in, and keep the other dogs out. Once my friend in MO got his fence back in working order the wild dogs stay outside his farm property and he hears the wild dogs yelp when they test his fence line.
You could also do something that might really sound strange, but would work. After you fence, find a great pyrenees dog in rescue… an adult dog… and adopt it and socialize your pup to it. Pyrs are guardians, not attack dogs, not fighting dogs, and a pyr mate for your pup will guard your pup against this neighbor’s dogs. A pyr that is a member of your family (pack) will guard your pup and your human family (pack) members. A pyr will try to intimidate and run off intruders.

Mixed Dog Breeds. Belonging to this group are some of the intelligent dog breeds which includes the admired German shepherd dog, most famous for its police work and the Border collies, the most intelligent of all breeds. The poodle is by far the most popular of the non-sporting breeds.
Both routinely in the top five breeds, the Labrador retriever and the golden retriever together account for nearly one-quarter of the more than 1 million dogs registered with the AKC every year. The annual German Shepherd Dog “Sieger” Show held in Germany every year is a spectacular event. The finest German Shepherds from Germany and also from many other countries are exhibited. The title “Sieger” is awarded to the top, adult male and the title ”Siegerin” to the best female.
This event, that takes place annually in various cities Germany, is held in a huge sports stadium, often a soccer stadium. It attracts thousands of dedicated enthusiasts from all over the world – China, Australia, India, South Africa, Russia, and in fact every country of the world where the German Shepherd Dog is bred.
This year it was held in Ulm at the Donau Sport Stadium and it was it was extremely well organized affair.
I have been attending these “Sieger” Shows since the 1970”s and this was one of the most enjoyable Sieger shows I have attended. One of the reasons was because the weatherin Ulm on this occasions was absolutely ideal. Another reason was because the hotel at which my wife and I stayed, the Maritim, is conveniently located within walking distance of the Show, making it very easy to attend every day.
Over the years I have seen a remarkable improvement in the quality of the dogs being exhibited. There is no doubt that top German Shepherd Dog show winners today are more strikingly handsome, athletic animals than they have ever been. They are so uniform in appearance that judges, for the most part, are only able to separate them by paying attention to minor faults in construction.
The “Sieger” this year, “Vegas du Haut Mansard”, a dog that also won the title last year, was a worthy winner. He is an absolute superb specimen. His spectacular, ground-covering gait and effortless movement impressed the huge, enthusiastic crowd.
An impressive feature of “Vegas” was his strong temperament that he demonstrated in the “test of courage” that all adult dogs are obliged to pass before being considered for high honors.
In this “test of courage” all the dogs exhibited at the Show, in the adult class are threatened, individually, with a stick by an “assailant”, suitably protected with a padded arm and protective clothing. If the dogs show any hesitation or nervousness they fail and are placed in a very low position.
An unfortunate feature of this Sieger Show was that there was an unusually high number of dogs that failed this test.
The German Shepherd Dog, not so long ago, had a reputation of being a breed of dog, not only beautiful in appearance, but also an excellent guard dog with a very strong protective instinct.
Unfortunately however, in recent years many breeders appear to have concentrated too much on breeding a beautiful animal with a spectacular ground-covering gait and neglected temperament.
Many German Shepherd Dogs today appear to have lost the natural, in-born, protective instinct that was once a highly regarded feature of the breed. There are far too many German Shepherd Dogs that are of no value as guard dogs.
A German Shepherd Dog with a strong, protective nature must not be confused with and over-aggressive animal. This type of temperament is frequently the result of timidity and nervousness, rather than bold, self-confidence.
WHAT IS THE IDEAL TEMPERAMENT FOR A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG.
Ideally, a German Shepherd Dog should be an extremely self-assured animal, a loyal companion, devoted to family members, excellent with children, approachable and tolerant of strangers, but with a natural ability to discriminate between friend and foe and an instinctive ability to immediately recognize danger when it appears.
With appropriate training a dog with this temperament can be easily trained to respond to dangers than threaten members of the family.
It is also an unfortunate fact that in recent years, quite a large number of dogs entered in the annual “Sieger” Shows in Germany, failed to pass the “test of courage” which is an important feature of the Sieger Show.
At the 2007 “Sieger” Show, there were no less than 47 whose performances in this “test of courage” was not of a very high standard.
Last year, in 2008, the figure was somewhat better as there were only 36 who failed. This does show some improvement. It is disappointing to note however, that many of these animals, who failed, came from the very best show winning bloodlines in Germany.
This year, in 2009, the situation was considerably worse. Of the 350 males entered in the Open class there were no less than 63 that failed the “test of courage”.
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION?
It is clear that if there is to be an improvement in the natural, inborn protective instinct of the German Shepherd Dog, breeders must pay more attention to breeding from animals with strong temperaments. They should concentrate on animals that have performed particularly well in the test of courage at Sieger shows and make use of these bloodlines.

The dog was a black german shepherd. I think the breeder was in hayward ca or some place in the bay area but i don’t know if there there anymore or the name of the place.
I lost the papers and he is not akc registered
Thats easy.
Look at your dogs papers and see who the breeder was.
Or if you don’t still have your dogs papers, just contact AKC give them your dogs registered name and they can tell you who the breeder is and if they are still registering litters.
ADD: Well without some kind of paper trail you are out of luck.
