Which do you think is more suitable?

I have an uncle who lives on/runs a dairy farm in Wisconsin. His dog died just a few weeks ago, of old age. The family is thinking of getting him another dog. My mom has a friend with German Shepherd/Collie mix pups, but my sister thinks an Australian Shepherd. The last time we visited, she took her Australian Shepherd and my uncle did comment on how smart the dog was. However, my mom can get the German Shepherd/Collie for free. Which breed do you think would do better on a farm? He doesn’t really need it for herding purposes as his cows come to the barn on their own when it is time to milk, so that’s not a big issue.

Your kidding right? You have the best of both worlds here; a dog that is part “working” part “herding” on a Dairy farm. Plus its a puppy so your Uncle can train the pup and it’s FREE! Seriously I think the pup would suit his needs; my only question would be is your Uncle up to training a puppy?

Labrador Retriver

The Labrador Retriver: Superdog And Devil Dog

One of the best selling books of 2005 was “Marley and Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog”, a true story written by John Grogan. The movie version is slated to be released in the fall of 2008. Although the late-lamented Marley has made Grogan’s fortune, he was a total terror to live with, despite the fact that he was a Labrador Retriever.

This is typical of the relationship between people and Labradors. People expect them to be mind readers or a furry person and they are neither. If the owners don’t commit to interacting with their dogs a lot, then even the best bred Labradors will turn into Devil Dogs (and not the nice kind with the creamy filling, either).

Labradors Need To Be Busy

Labradors have been bred to work all day and use up a lot of energy into making independent decisions. They are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog in the world and almost certainly smarter that 99.9% of human beings. If you don’t give Labrador Retrivers something to do, they will find a job to do – no matter if you like this new profession or not.

It is crucial to know what you are getting into before you bring home a Labrador – whether a puppy or adult. Labrador Retrivers are animals that are a bit like small horses in that they need daily exercise, preferably at least two brisk walks of twenty minutes each twice a day. Some get by on one long walk, but also get to play fetch or go fishing with their owners. If they don’t get this exercise, they feel their oats and burst with energy. This tends to lead to mischief and destruction.

What Labrador Retrivers Are Capable Of

In the aftermath of September 11, most of the nations rescue dog squads were deployed to either New York or Washington, DC. The three breeds of dogs seen over and over again were Border Collies, German Shepherds and, most of all Labradors of all sizes and colors. They were not only able to traverse dangerous territory to do their jobs, but they were also able to turn their energy off to comfort the grieving.

Labradors will stare at you when they are not thinking of play or food. Even the maverick Marley became the perfect therapist at the times his family needed comfort most. Labradors adore humans, for some unknown reason. It has been suggested that the souls of humanity rest in the bodies of dogs. Labrador Retrivers make a good case for this theory.

One of the most popular dog breeds for pet owners is the Labrador. The reason for this is because labs are loyal, intelligent, and very friendly. They make outstanding companions and are the choice for pet owners around the world. Because of this it makes Labrador mix dogs almost as popular. Labrador mixes like their full bred counterparts are extremely popular. Generally speaking a Labrador mix will keep the qualities of the Labrador breed and balance those qualities against the qualities of the mixed breed.

Examples Of Labrador Mix Breeds That Are Popular

One of the most popular Labrador mix breeds is a lab and golden retriever mix. Both of these breeds’ possess similar qualities, are similar in size, and make outstanding companions. Goldens are among the smartest of all dog breeds and are frequently used as seeing eye dogs because they are so easily trained. A golden and Labrador mix will not have as much hair as a pure bred golden and therefore will be easier to care for and maintain. This makes them very popular and there is a lot of ways to not only find information about but find places to get this mix.

Lab Mix Information

The next lab mix information to look at is the Chow and Labrador mix. The Chow is a very popular breed of dog, but most people do not know there can have a bit of a mean personality. They make good guard dogs, but can be dangerous to have as a family pet. By mixing them with a lab you can temper this and have a pet that is not only great around people but is a good guard dog as well.

My personal favorite, although I might be a bit biased because I have one at home, is the Rottweiler and Labrador mix. Rots are generally views as mean guard dogs but nothing could be farther from the truth. One of the problems with the full bred Rottweilers is that they have a short life expectancy do to problems with their hops and other physical issues. In addition they tend to not be warm and cuddly dogs. Again both of these characteristics can be improved on by mixing with a Labrador. My lab rot mix is extremely friendly to people she knows. Kind to my son, great around the neighborhood kids she will defend the home against strangers with full force, so while not for everyone she is wonderful in my home.

There you have three examples of some popular and effective Labrador mix breeds. If you have any questions on how to get specific mixes, contact your local SPCA and I am sure they will be more than willing to help you.

Finding The Right German Shepherd Puppies

German Shepherds make excellent pets because they are athletic, energetic and bond well with their owners. Many know the German Shepherd breed because of their high trainability as a search and rescue dog or a police dog. When selecting between German Shepherd puppies for sale you should consider some health and breed standards. Before you purchase any puppy you will want to have an initial meeting with the puppy you are thinking buying. Observe how the puppy reacts to both your voice and touch. The puppy should be affectionate and eager to make friends.

Later in life some German Shepherds can have a tendency towards aggression. If you don’t train your puppy early then you should at the very least choose one with a good temperament to start. You also want to inquire about any socialization training the dog has had. For German Shepherd’s early socializing is extremely important and any methods the former owners use is crucial. It is important for the puppy to interact with other dogs and humans every day and early.

Next you should request to see both parents of the puppy if you are buying from a breeder. Carefully observe how the parents react to you as a stranger, make sure there are no signs of unwarranted aggression. The litter will inherit the temperament of the parents. For health reasons you should also make sure the parents move easily and unencumbered. Make sure you view the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or OFA certification for the puppys’ parents.

German Shepherds are prone to hip dysphasia and it is a predisposition that can be passed on to litters. So when considering German Shepherd puppies for sale you want to find out the rating the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals maintains on all registered canines based off the X-rays of the dog’s bone structure. Any dog prone to hip dysphasia shouldn’t be bred and you shouldn’t purchase a dog from anyone who doesn’t have Orthopedic Foundation for Animals certification for their dogs.

Next carefully look over the puppy you are considering. The eyes should be clear and alert and the gums should be pink and healthy. There should be no foreign matter in the ears. Without being overly energetic the puppy should be playful. When considering German Shepherd puppies for sale you should carefully consider the puppy’s lineage. An American Kennel Club puppy from a breeder will have family charts that show not only the puppy’s parents but also the ancestors of the puppy for several generations on both sides of the family. A good breeder will be happy to show you this detailed family tree and even provide you a copy for your records.

After you have chosen and purchased you German Shepherd puppy you should have it evaluated by a veterinarian right away, they will need to be de-wormed and get all their shots. To socialize your puppy with other dogs and human beings you should take them on walks, set up play dates with dogs or friends and take them with you into pet stores when you shop if it is allowed.

German Shepherd/Chow Chow Mix?

We’ve adopted a German shepherd/chow mix and he is really intelligent. Wants to please like a shepherd, but able to think on his own like a chow.

He shows potential in being a scenting dog. I would play with him with a favorite rope toy of his, and I would hide it. He then looks like he is sniffing around for it. How would I train him and help him develop this skill?

Oh, and what can I put in his food that would help with urine spots so that it doesn’t burn the grass in the yard? My cousin uses spaghetti sauce on her german shepherd/lab mix. Is there an alternative?

Yellow Grass and Dog Urine
Weekly Expert Pet Advice
with Dr. James Glover, Resident Expert

We have a 1 year old German Shepard, and when it goes to the bathroom outside, it turns the grass yellow. How can we prevent this? Is it something he can eat or drink to help? It is ruining our yard! (Kristen Soares, Texas)
Dog urine causes dead patches and lawn burn due to the high levels of nitrogen that is released into the lawn through the urine. Every dog owner who has a yard will be familiar with this.

Nitrogen is actually a lawn-growth stimulant that encourages lawn growth when properly applied as a fertilizer. The problem presented with dog urine is that since most dogs urinate in one spot, then will introduce large amounts of liquid nitrogen (urine) to that spot thereby causing a burning reaction and even a dead-spot in the lawn. Often the effected spot will show vigorous grass growth around the spot due to the nitrogen levels that stimulate growth around the edges. Since larger dogs usually produce larger amounts of urine, there is a direct correlation between the size of your dog and the changes of developing lawn burn and dead spots in your lawn through urination.

The best way to help prevent urine burns and dead spots is to saturate the spots with water. This will allow the excess nitrogen to leach or dilute through the lawn and reducing the concentration in one area. It is usually best to treat the areas up to 9 hours after urination and to apply at least three-time the amount of water to urine to the area. Dead spots can also be reseeded. Most lawn grasses will eventually repair itself to cover the dead areas.

Among the many reputed cures for dead-spots from dog urine are also to apply sugar to the affected areas, with the thinking that this somehow balances out the nitrogen overkill. If you have old unfinished bottles of soda this can be liberally applied to these areas, or apply a handful of corn syrup. This particular remedy is often reported to work!

I copied this info from another web site hope it helps!

oh and keep working with your dog until he becomes familiar with what you are doing. Then introduce him to other things he can go and find.Be sure to reward him for being good.

But Will It Change Its Own Potty Pads? What Service Dogs Really Do

There are many kinds of service dogs trained to help humans with differing conditions and in differing situations.  Assistance dogs are put through many kinds of rigorous training before being placed in a home or a job.  Most service dogs are initially raised in foster homes, with human foster parents who work constantly with the puppies to get them ready for serious careers.  They start with the basics that all family puppies must learn:  puppy housebreaking, puppy crate training, and general puppy house training such as not chewing the furniture.  These skills are then built upon by trainers to teach the dogs more complex commands and behaviors.

The advanced skills that service dogs are taught depends greatly on the type of work they will do as adults.  Dogs bound for police work undergo agility training, and specialized training for the type of work they will do.  Beagles and Bloodhounds are often trained to sniff out narcotics and cadavers.  German Shepherds intended for police work usually undergo training in crowd control and suspect detainment.  Most all kinds of service dogs go through a large amount of socialization training.  This includes dealing with crowds and loud noises, as well as dealing with children and the elderly.  Social training is one very important aspect of service dog training that police dogs and assistance dogs both learn.

When most people hear the term “service dogs” they think of dogs that are trained as companion helpers to humans with disabilities.  Many movies have played up the abilities of service dogs and given the idea that they can do absolutely everything for a human, including changing their own potty pads or taking themselves for walks, or even cooking dinner.  While assistance dogs are intelligent, highly trained, and well skilled, they are still canines on four legs.  The purpose of a service dog is to help a person with disabilities handle daily activities more easily, and to provide a companion.  In many ways, simply being a constant companion is the best help a service dog can give.  Some service dogs’ jobs are simply to stay with their humans all the time and get help in the event of persistent occurrences such as seizures.  In many ways, these dogs do not just perform helpful assistance, they literally save lives.

Many assistance dogs do help around the house by opening doors and drawers, or fetching specified objects on command.  This can be an enormous help for persons who use wheelchairs.  Still others enable visually impaired people to move more freely through the home and the outside world.  Some assistance dogs are now being trained to help doctors find cancer in humans by sniffing out the cancer cells.  The range of what canine companions are capable of is extensive, as are the number of organizations that help place assistance dogs with people who need them.  For people interested in fostering and training service dogs, becoming acquainted with the most local assistance dog services available is a good first step.  Most all of these organizations have different training programs for people and the dogs.  Just don’t expect them to change their own potty pads; at least not without a bit of training.

German Shepherd Violent

Dog experts’ advice needed?

My German Shepherd; 6 year old dog is getting violent, aggressive and dominant lately with my other two dogs, (one a crossbreed of a Labrador vs. ? and a Husky vs. German Shepherd) now his dad was also extremely aggressive; so it’s probably in his blood but is there anything that we could do about this. We’ve already tried homeopathic and biological calming drops to put in his food/water. But it hasn’t had any effect. Any advice, please?

Need more details… aggressive how? Over food, toys, attention, what??? If it’s over food or toys then you should always be feeding them away from each other and maybe get rid of the toys for awhile. If he’s just flat out attacking them for no apparent reason you need to show him he’s not the dominant one by being assertive and firm yourself. Break them up and then take the aggressive dog on make him lie down and be on his back… have your other dogs come over. This is a submissive position so he’ll know he doesn’t dominate them. When you’re not home you should never just leave them all out knowing that they fight so trying kenneling or at least putting in separate rooms. Exercise is probably the BIGGEST thing that will help. A tired dog with little excess energy isn’t going to even want to start a fight so you need to start taking them all out for long walks or if you have a yard go out there everyday and play fetch or whatever games they like. If they can’t all play together then at least get the excess energy out of the aggressive one that’s causing the problems.

Watch Working Dog Videos to Properly Train Your Working German Shepherd

If you want to train working dogs, there are several breeds that you can teach tricks or special tasks. These include beagles, bloodhounds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, American Bulldog, Welsh Collie, and several other canine breeds. The German Shepherd is one of the most common working dogs. This is due to the great characteristics of a working German Shepherd. This dog breed is generally obedient and loyal, making it easy to train. It can be the gentlest working dog, employed to guide a blind individual. It can also be the fiercest trained dog for the police force.

German Shepherds are among the most popular breeds of working dogs all over the world, with several lines fit for different work areas. The Alsatian, or German Shepherd, is originated by a man named Max von Stephanitz during the late 1800s. The ability of the working German Shepherd to be trained and its intelligence is owed to the captain, who desires working dogs that are helpful in different working fields. This capability is hugely observed in German Shepherds.

A German Shepherd is employed to perform different kinds of tasks. They are working dogs that specialize in a variety of work areas. Examples of these are search and rescue, police chores, military chores, guard, and handicap and blind assistance. Compared to other canine breeds, the working German Shepherd is capable of dealing with different types of owners. It can be a suitable pet for children and families because of its loyalty and emotion. It can also be a perfect addition to a task force unit, with its aggressiveness and fierceness.

There are different color varieties for the hair of German Shepherds. There are some lines that are a mix of black and brown. On the other hand, a working German Shepherd may have a mix of brown and cream hair colors. This breed is distinguished through its behavior and skills. German Shepherds that are employed as working dogs specialize in various services. There are also some German Shepherds that are hired as show dogs, with great emphasis on appearance. Because of the popularity of this breed within the police force and the military, a working German Shepherd is said to be violent and dangerous.

This is a common misconception among German Shepherds that are used as working dogs. Like all dogs, a working German Shepherd may only be violent if it is not trained well, or dealt with cruelty. The proper training of this dog breed includes daily exercise. If Alsatian working dogs are not exercised regularly, they will end up losing their energy.

If you are an owner of a German Shepherd and you want to learn how to train it, you can watch training videos over the web. You can check out Working Dog Videos where you can find clips on the proper steps of training a working German Shepherd and other breeds of working dogs. Working Dog Videos is also suitable for trainers who are looking for dogs to train. Aside from viewing dog training clips, you can also share your videos privately or publicly.

Long Haired German Shepherd Akc

long haired german shepherd akc
Long-haired German Shepherds?

Okay, so I came across a woman walking her long-coated German Shepherd. I asked her if it was a plush coat since most breeders don’t breed for long hair since I believe it’s a fault in the AKC. She told me it was long coated and I said something along “ah, there aren’t many of those unless you’re purposely trying to breed German Shepherds that way.”

Then she told me that it wasn’t just a German Shepherd, that the long coat is a separate breed. I’ve never heard this before, and I looked into long coated German Shepherds at one point.

Are they really a separate breed? Has the AKC changed so it isn’t a fault? Do other KCs allow the long coat?

I know that’s a lot of questions, thank you!
-Alika613
I thought it weird, because even though I’m not an expert I was pretty sure the GSDs’ coat needs to be a short double layer. I felt bad because she was kind of rude about it too, like I was an idiot. Oh well.

If its a GSD it is a GSD. Coat length does not make it a different breed. Neither the akc nor the FCI standard(which is what most of the world follows) allow for a long coated GSD.

MAKE THE PUPS KNOW WHO’S IN CHARGE
However, they can be your worst enemy sometimes.

HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUND
But despite what those who breed and sell crossbreeds might try to tell you, these are not, nor will they likely ever be, recognized as purebred dogs. Sporting dogs that are alert, active and intelligent have historically been used by hunters to locate, flush or retrieve game from land or water. That’s part of the fun. Its name origins from the Latin terra, meaning “for earth”, most terriers were originally bred to “go to ground” after burrowing vermin, larger rodents and even foxes. Children and dogs make potentially blissful partners, but choosing a dog that actually likes to play with children is your best bet in orchestrating a match made in heaven. Scent hounds such as bloodhounds, beagles and foxhounds have historically aided hunters by following the scent trails left by their quarry. The national symbol of England, known for its strength and determination, it has been out of work since bull-baiting went out of fashion in the late 19th century. This is the list of dog Herding Breeds according to The American Kennel Club:Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old, English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Swedish Vallhund. Without the right training, some working dogs can be difficult to handle, even dangerous. Belonging to this group are some of the intelligent dog breeds which includes the admired German shepherd dog, most famous for its police work and the Border collies, the most intelligent of all breeds. Both routinely in the top five breeds, the Labrador retriever and the golden retriever together account for nearly one-quarter of the more than 1 million dogs registered with the AKC every year. A pampered, yet surprisingly active companion today, it once was a skilled truffle hunter. Consequently, these owners should also give them “work” that rewards their instincts. Like most terriers, this “king of terriers” has little time for other dogs, and if not properly supervised may engage in some street brawling. Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a well-liked family pet.

THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE
In addition, when dogs of similar stature meet up, one often bumps the other with the rear of its torso to get a feel for its potential rival’s body mass. A lot of information can be garnered from a quick sniff. The lolling tongue increases the surface area where evaporation can take place. You might as well read the information about it. Special taste receptors on their tongues are believed to allow canids to recognize chemical composition variancessuch as salt and impuritiesin different water sources. Like all mammals, the canid family is able to control body temperature through various physical functions. The long hair of the Lhasa apso is due to a naturally prolonged growth phase that was emphasized by selective breeding for thermal protection and aesthetic reasons. A small stopper pad, located higher up on the back of the leg, provides a better grip for walking or running on slick surfaces. Most mammals sweat to keep cool. Button Ears. Most hound dogs feature hanging or pendant ears, while many terriers have semi-erect button ears in which the tips fold over and hang in a V-shape, partially covering the opening.

Do you know any cool but cute names for a male German Shepherd mix?

Okay, please don’t start saying, “this is YOUR dog, YOUR option” stuff. This is a dog for my story, so it’s not a real dog.
Preferably names for a male German Shepherd mix. I want some cool names, cute, but different. Not something ordinary like Cody or Max.

I fostered a GSD name Zeus. It was a nice tough big dog name.

It is of course not easy to choose the best pup in the litter because pups do change – sometimes quite dramatically.   There have been occasions where the runt of the litter has turned out to be far better than his more promising littermates.  But as a rule, when one has the opportunity of examining the entire litter at eight weeks, it is generally possible to choose the best – certainly the best pup at that stage of growth.  Eight weeks is a probably the best time to make the choice.

After taking your time to examine all the pups in the litter carefully, make sure that the forelegs of the pup that takes your  fancy are straight and sturdy.  See that the pup has good bone which is indicated by thick “knuckle”.   If it is a male you are looking for, size and masculinity is important.  Although one must be aware that in recent years over-size in  males is a problem that has become more common  in the breed.  It is a fault and is something to be guarded against.

The pup should have a good strong  and clearly masculine head.  This is also of importance because there is a   tendency in recent years  for heads in males to be finer and less noble than  one would like.

The movement of the pup can be reasonably well  assessed even at this tender age of eight weeks. The well-balanced pup will appear to move with more harmony and more easily than the others in the litter.

Look for a pup with a high wither.  This is fairly easy to access,  but try and make sure that the high wither is not at the expense of a good shoulder formation.  This is rather difficult because excellent shoulder formation is not as common as one would wish.  The high wither that is such an attractive feature of the modern Shepherd is one of the reasons for this.    The shoulder should be well laid back with good length of upper arm.  Even at this early it is possible to see whether or not the pup has a good shoulder.  Of course a good shoulder is not merely an aesthetic requirement, it is essential for good forward reach and sound movement when the pup grows into a mature dog.

If you have to choose between a  pup that is slightly long in body length and one that is somewhat shorter in body length, if other factors are equal, give preference to the slightly shorter pup.  Sometimes body length is accompanied by weakness in back and will affect movement severely when the pup matures.

It goes without saying  that you should have seen both parents before having to make a decision and have been aware of any deficiencies present in addition to virtues. Examine, if possible, other animals they have produced.

It will also be of great benefit if you have background knowledge of the bloodlines.

The pup should have strong hindquarters with broad thighs, long stifles and good hocks. The length of stifle is also easily recognizable at the age of eight weeks. But this will change.  When you select a pup with a well angulated, long stifle, make a point of examining the away movement to see if the hocks are fairly firm.  Once cannot expect hocks to be too firm at this early age, but you don’t want a pup that has wobbly hocks.

The coat should be full but definitely not long.  A long coat is a serious fault in the show ring.  It is quite easy to detect a long coat in a pup because the pup show signs of a collie type coat and there will be tufts of fur coming from the ears.

Unless there are definite signs of color paling, which is a definite fault, color is not supposed to be of primary importance in the show ring.  However, there is no doubt that a well-pigmented animal is always  far more glamorous in the show ring and attracts more attention.

With  regard to ears, this is usually a matter about which you need not concern yourself if both parents have good ear carriage.  The ears do not become fully erect until the dogs finishes teething and six months, although many pups do get their  ears up much earlier. But if the ears are very long and inclined to be thick there might be a danger of soft ears.  Here again it is important to know the bloodlines of the parents.

If the pup has a good head, with a deep muzzle, not a long collie type head, the chances are good  that the bite will be good and the pup will have the correct scissors  bite when he matures.  Many pups are over-shot when they are young, which means that the upper teeth protrude over the lower teeth.  If this is only slight it is not very serious and this fault might be corrected as the pup matures.  If however, it is marked there is a distinct danger that it might not change.   A scissor bite is very important and if there is a definite gap of more than 2mm. between the upper and lower teeth the dog will be heavily penalized in the show ring.

What cannot  be predicted with any degree of accuracy at this early stage,  is whether the pup will grow up to have full dentition – a full complement of teeth.  Quite often, when the pup matures and the teething process is over, the owner is very upset to find that an otherwise promising animal has a missing tooth.  This may seem a very minor fault – and in a family pet it is certainly of no real consequence – but in the show ring it is viewed in a serious light as it is regarded as a genetic fault.

Even though the breeder is as anxious as you are to have your pup do well in the show ring, there is of course  no guarantee that your pup  is going to do well, as careful as you have been in your selection.   Bear in mind that the showing of dogs, particularly German Shepherds, in the highly competitive environment that exists today, is very demanding and often very frustrating.   Your dog may be a good specimen, but whether he becomes a show winner is entirely dependent on the quality of the competition!

If you do happen to win, enjoy your triumph with good grace. Entering Dog Shows should always be regarded as a sport. Be sportsmanlike.  Sometimes you win.  Sometimes you lose.  If you do happen be beaten by what the Judge considers to be a superior animal, be a gracious loser.

Because the competition is so intense and the standard of dogs being exhibited is improving all the time,  if you hope to do well at shows it is important to select a pup from the best show winning bloodlines.   Visit the following website for a great deal of useful information about present-day top-winning Shepherds and famous German Shepherds of the past:  http://www.freedogadvice.com

spiked collar?

please dont infrom me it wouldnt work/dangerous i already know and i made my mind i want one and please dont reccomd ebay or petsmart/petco

im asking a very serious dog collar question.. i have a 2 year old german shepherd and my house got broken into and i want my german shepherd to look fierce so ive came to the conclusion to get him a intense spiked collar.
im looking for a ***LEATHER COLLAR** (id like it to be white but any colar works) with Spikes ^^^^3 rows of spikes or more… please dont post anything if theres only 1 or 2 rows and i want the spikes big. like the ones in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frwvy5vr1… please none less.. this is my 8 time asking this and ive tried looking for ones and i cant seem to find them at all thats why im asking this.. thank you!! if someone posts a goodo answer ill help boost ur yahoo answers points

a german shepherd in general should be protective. if your house got broken into, and your dog didn’t help any or stop the person, a spiked collar is not going to matter. all you’re going to do is make yourself look trashy and endanger your dog. since you’re not asking a question, because you said you already have decided, all i have to say is poor dog. because if you think you need a collar to make a german sheperd look tough, you have many issues. please don’t pick me as best answer i would be embarrased, and don’t need the point boost from someone like you.

Will the Severe Spore Drm be the Undoing of the Video Games Industry?

Millions of video game lovers, many of whom were devoted to the widely popular Sims video games, waited anxiously for Electronic Arts newest video game release called Spore. Electronics Arts did not disappoint it’s many fans as the $49.99 regular version of Spore, the $9.99 Spore Creature Creator and the $79.99 Galactic version of Spore were released without a hitch and were quickly snatched off the retail stores shelves. Although Spore’s sales didn’t quite match the volume of sales of video game monoliths Guitar Hero III or Grand Theft Auto IV, it did very well. It is usually about a week after a video game release when the people who bought the game begin flooding the Internet with either their personal praise or damnation of the video game. They talk about things like game play, graphics speed and resolution, end game, online play, character building etc. Not this time! With Spore, the talk was all about its DRM!

What is DRM? The copyright protection called DRM is an acronym for Digital Rights Management, a term used to describe the different techniques for restricting the free use and transfer of digital content. DRM is used in a number of media, but is found most often in music and video files. Many of people believe that DRM should stand for Digital Restrictions Manager being that it manages users restrictions while taking away their rights. Companies like Apple began using DRM under the auspices of fighting piracy. Has it worked? You tell me. After the news of the type of severe DRM Electronics Arts put on Spore spread to future buyers, it took only days for over 500,000 illegal copies of the Spore video game (without DRM) to be downloaded from P2P BitTorrent sites on the Internet. Does DRM work? No! It ticks people off. If you don’t believe it, ask Amazon.com, where thousands of people unhappy with Spore’s DRM restrictions gave the new video game a lowly one star rating. Thanks to DRM, Spore has become the most pirated game ever.

So, what was so bad about Spore’s DRM to get so many people in an uproar? Here is what it is all about and I am going to tell you from first hand experience because I purchased the $79.99 Galactic version of Spore and after one more download, the game will be worthless. Because my video card was not set perfectly to run Spore, I received a warning message after the first installation that I needed to change my video card settings and reinstall Spore again or the game would not work. One installation used. I did what was required and reinstalled Spore again. No error messages this time, the game works wonderfully. Two installations used. So why am I counting installations? You see, with Spore’s DRM restrictions, the purchaser can only install the game three times. After the third installation, your bought and paid for game of Spore will be nothing but a worthless piece of plastic. You can play it, but you will never be able to install it again. So you pray nothing goes wrong with your computer because you won’t be able to install Spore to a new one. If I would have known about Electronic Arts DRM restrictions for Spore, I never would have purchased it and I may have gone as far as joining the other 500,000 so-called pirates visiting a free game downloads site to download a DRM-less version.

Some folks say that a company should be allowed to protect their copyrighted products, and I agree as long as they don’t take the rights away from the new owners, the people who have purchased those copyrighted products. I want to first say that I don’t necessarily hate the idea of copyright protection but I do hate the way DRM is being abused by the companies. When a person buys a copyrighted product, the copyright should now belong to the new owner along with the product. As far as I am concerned, when I purchase something it should be mine to do with as I please. As long as it does not involve harming, torturing or killing a living creature, I should have complete and total rights to do what I want with that product. Here are some examples of what I mean. If I were to purchase a German Shepherd dog ($800), it is mine. If I want to either sell or give my dog away to someone else, I have every right to do so. If I buy a car ($25,000) and a week later feel like selling it or giving it away, I can because I have the every right to do so. If I were to buy a house ($200,000) outright for cash (I wish), that house would be completely mine to sell or even give it away if I choose. If I have complete and total rights to do what I want with my dog, my car and my house, will somebody please tell me why can I face criminal charges and punishment for doing what I want with my $79.99 game of Spore or any other video game for that matter. Heck, with EA’s new DRM restrictions imposed on my Spore video game, I can’t even install it more than three times. In truth, Spore still belongs to Electronic Arts even though I forked out my hard earned cash for the rights of ownership. Therein lies the true crime my friends. And the video game industry is wondering why more and more normally honest folks have turned to pirating.

Sadly, video game companies like Electronic Arts are unwittingly causing the downfall of the video game industry with their abuse of DRM restrictions. Piracy paranoia has already taken a huge bite out of the PC and Mac game industry. Remember when stores like Egghead and Electronics Boutique used to be stocked wall to wall with computer games for your PC or Mac. Then they come up with all of these unjust anti-piracy rules that if you open the games packaging there will be no exchanges or refunds allowed. Are you kidding me. With all of the different computer configurations out there due to lack of standards within the industry, you were lucky not to run into a conflict when installing or playing the game. How many of you remember buying a $50 computer game only to have it not work when you installed it. Remember how you felt when you tried to get your money back for a $50 game that you never even got to play only to be told by the suspicious salesman at the stores counter, Too Bad, No Refund, No Exchange Policy Here! A lot of people remember. That is the main reason good honest folk turned to P2P download sites for their computer games in the first place. No risk of losing their money through no fault of their own. Thus began the downfall of the video game industry for PC’s and Mac’s. Now when you go into a store looking to purchase a game for your PC, all you will find is a little rack of about fifteen computer games tucked away somewhere in the back of a video game store.

Don’t look now, but the video game industry is following that same path of self destruction as before, and the DRM restrictions they are putting on games like Spore will be their undoing. If the fact that the Spore DRM policy has caused it to become the most pirated video game in history does not bring about changes in copyright policies, then they will be in deep trouble as an industry. I realize I am ranting but I tend to get ticked off when I am being ripped off and I am not alone here. Head over to CNet or Amazon.com to see what people are saying about the Spore DRM policy. The video game makers had better listen too, because they are on the path of causing their own demise with such a draconic DRM policy. Electronic Arts, the maker of Spore especially had better open up its ears, because over 500,000 people downloading DRM free versions of the video game from Free Game Downloads sites in only a few days makes a thunderous sound. The release of Spore was supposed to be a happy day for all. Instead, EA’s punishing DRM policy may have begun the downfall of the video game industry, and that would be a sad day for everyone.

german shepherd king size
any suggestions…?

i am getting amale KING sheherd! beautiful dogs! they’re big dogs in case u dont know, look similar to german shepherds, but are twice the size. like i said i am getting a male, i cant thinkof any good names…any ideas? think of male majestic, BIG , sort of flyffly, brownish/ black dog…thanks
my dog comes with papers, 2 year gurantee, total examination from vet, ears, eyes, hips, internal organs…etcs..thanks guys for those names

I suggest you not get it as it is a gimmick bred by a back yard greeder that likely has not done any relevent health testing at all and no temperament or structural evaluations. To have to use a gimmick like ‘King’ or ‘oversized’ tells you immediately that these dogs are of such poor quality that they wouldn’t sell otherwise… We have it in Dobermans as well and they are pathetically unhealthy — Dobermans rarely have hip dysplasia and such EXCEPT these gimmick dogs — the only dysplastic Dobermans I have known have been oversized gimmick bred ones and that is likely what you are going to be dealing with – - a dog that is so crippled by the time he is an adult he will hardly be able to jump on a couch or in a car… Make sure that these back yard greeders have done hip and elbow OFA evaluations and you can check for them online to verify — http://www.offa.org — and there are a number of other deadly and disabling health issues and if these people say they don’t have any, they are lying.. that is typical – “my dawgs are healthy – just look at em” … no one can tell by just looking at a dog… Best name, Gimmick or Supporter of irresponsible and ignorant back yard greeders… SIAIBYG :)

AKC-Different Types of Dog Breeds

There are approximately 400 breeds of dogs around the world. The American Kennel Club recognizes only 146 of them. The dogs which are recognized by the American kennel club can be listed as follows:

Terriers

Non-sporting

Toys

Sporting

Working

Hounds

Herding

American Staffordshire terrier, jack terrier, bull terrier, Jack Russell terrier are some of the dogs which fall under this category. These dogs are competitive and determined. They are the fighting breeds. The dogs of this breed are extremely fast and very deadly. The dogs like Jack Russell terriers are very sharp hunters. They are also assertive and fearless.

In the non-sporting group, there is a huge variation in the size, origin and type of dogs. They are bred out of the terriers breed as they do not perform any tasks, they are just companion dogs. Some of the most popular companion dogs are standard and miniature poodles. Some of the dogs which are a part of this category are Dalmatian, French bulldog, Chow chow, Boston terrier.

The toy categories of the dogs are very small in size. They are superb companion dogs. These dogs are friendly, kind and are very suitable in case you are having a very small home or an apartment. Boston terrier, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Chihuahua, Papillion, toy poodle and pug form the citizens of this category. They are also very delicate looking and the owner needs to take good care of them.

The sporting group dogs are alert and active as the name suggests. They possess significant instincts while they are in woods and travel in water. This is the reason why they are used for hunting and field activities. American water spaniel, Chesapeake Bay retriever, pointer, Irish water spaniel and Labrador retriever are the members of this category.

As the name suggests, the working dogs are just used for work. They are used as helpful resources in water rescues, pulling out dog sleds; they are also used in finding the drugs and not to forget guarding the people. Bernard dogs, Dobermans, boxers are the examples of some of the working dogs.

The hound breeds of hunters are known to be good hunters. They use the accurate and strong sense of smell to find their way to the prey. They also have enormous amount of stamina, and it shows when they run and hunt. Beagles, black and tan coonhounds, American foxhound, and the bloodhound are the dogs which fall in this category. The hounds are also known for a unique kind of a howl.

The herding group has a strange kind of ability to control sheep and livestock. They do this by controlling their movements. They are also one of the best family pets. The herding dogs are very receptive to the training they are given. They love playing with children, being with the family and playing with children is one of the best pastimes of these dogs. Pembroke Welsh corgi Australian cattle dog, Belgian sheepdog, Shetland sheepdogs Border collie, German shepherd are some of the dogs which fall in this category.
