How do you stop a german shepherd puppy from barking and biting at 6 week old?

Yeah well i just got my puppy 2 days ago & its 6 weeks old and she’s ok and everything but when she plays or doesn’t like been pick up starts to growl and then starts barking and bitting hard all furious and everything i never seen that in a puppy i dont know what to do because i already got bite on my hand so yeah help cuz i i try so many ways but none have really work???

ok, we are dealing with a few issues here, so lets get started.

First of all, the puppy you go there, take it back to the breeder now. That puppy is only 6 weeks old, how dare anyone seel a puppy that old to anyone. Puppies are not suppose to be removed from the litter until 8 weeks at the earliest. I know, whats 2 weeks, but 2 weeks to a puppy is like 6 months to you and me. Puppies are suppose to be with their litter until 8 weeks of age for proper socialization (“The Dog Listener” by Jan Fennell and
“The Art of Raising a Puppy” by the Monks of New Skete”)
Second books, I know, in this day adn age, who reads a book. Well, you might want to, the two formentioned would be a good start. They both deal with the issues that you are dealing with, including step by step instructions on what to do with a new puppy. Now as for the one you have now, if the asshole breeder doesn’t take the puppy back.

Do not tap, slap, pop, or in any other way shape or form hit that puppy. I mean, when you were a baby, and you were crying or biting, did your parents hit you for that. If they did, you need help. If the puppy is grawling or anything like that when you are trying to hold it, roll it over on its back in your arms. This shows the puppy that he has no control and needs to learn to submit. As for the biting, if it really hurts that bad, and believe me, I have been around enough puppies to know, then let him know. Scream really loud “OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and then place the puppy down, do not throw toss, or in any way forcefully remove the puppy from you. Get up and walk away from the puppy. 10-1 says that the puppy will come running back to you. I have a 6 month old GSD and he was nipping when we got him, took about a day, but can take as long as a week. You will learn that the puppy wants to play with you, and it will learn not to bite.

Three Tips To Effectively Train Your German Shepherd Pups!

Training German Shepherd pups is easier than training them when they’re older. This is because the basic concept of training, which is to teach dogs association, is harder to enforce after your dog has surpassed its learning years. Hence, older dogs take longer in creating associations between their actions and the lessons that you want them to learn, and the training process takes twice more the effort.

But training your German Shepherd pups doesn’t have to be a hard process if you start early on and you know what you have to do! Below, we’ve prepared several important tips that are a must if you’re planning to do things more effectively.

1) Positive Reinforcements Helps
The basic idea of training is to positively teach your dog that certain actions he performs would bring him rewards. It’s like teaching them that when they roll over or bark upon command, they would be getting a prize. However, when dogs are taught by punishment such as hitting or screaming, they would retaliate and cower in fear, making the process frustrating to owner and dog.

2) Consistency is the Key
Sometimes, it’s easier to train when you’re the only one holding your puppy. But when you have a whole family playing with your German Shepherd pups, the training experience might not be easy. In cases like these, you should remember that consistency is the key to training your pups. Always use the same commands, gestures, and training methods be it you or your family member to avoid confusing your dog.

3) Talk to your dog
Learning to communicate with your dog is an essential part of dog training. You should be able to identify your dog’s body movements to help you know how your dog feels. Is it scared? Does it feel threatened or hurt? These signs will help you understand your dog better and help you assess whether you’re making a point and teaching him or scaring him away.

German Shepherd Elbow

What Should I Look For In A German Shepherd Puppy?

Tell me anything I should look for when I pick out my puppy. I know the hips and elbows need to be ofa certified, but what if they are just prelimbed? Is that just as good or is that bad? I am planning on getting a female and breeding her.

[Kimberley]: The tail should NOT touch the ground. It should reach to the heel or SLIGHTLY further, when the dog is standing naturally.

[Kirbee]: I cannot approve of your “shepard” invention. Nor of your failure to accept that we NEED the useful breeds (of which the GSD is THE most versatile, when bred to the International Standard of the GSD) to be produced in order to aid paraplegics, guard military bases, guide the blind, help police & customs agents find contraband & hold felons, herd livestock, search for & rescue avalanche victims & lost folk, etc etc.
My country’s police kennel accepts donated dogs (which are usually equivalent to what’s in rescue), but almost none graduate – VERY few dogs not carefully bred FOR a task are actually capable of performing that task.
What my friend in the Catskills uses to patrol & guard her sheep LOOK and BEHAVE very differently to what’s seen winning at Westminster or as Can&Am.Grand Victors – HERS are genuine GSDs, the others exaggerated NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs.
Yes, SOME rescued dogs are GREAT – after being supplied 4 unsatisfactory “guide dogs” in a row (unhealthy, or under-trained & temperamentally unsuitable as guides) my blind pen-friend in Texas gave up on professionals, rescued a young GSD then trained it herself (with assistance from a sighted friend for the traffic awareness aspects). But that pair are rarities.

[bowhunter]:
You don’t yet even know which field of endeavour you wish to aim your future puppies at, so can’t possibly know which kind of breeder to aproach.

Puppies are NOT xrayed – but need their parents & grandparents to be. A pooch’s OWN xrays have little relevance (except to guide surgeons attempting to correct afflicted joints) – what counts is the WORST score detected in the CHILDREN of each one.
The world’s good schemes refuse to read plates taken at under 1 year, but all Certificate at 1 onwards – no “prelims”. Dr Willis collected data on the age at which HD was first detected. Plates taken at 6 months detected only 16% of GSDs that developed HD. At 12 months it rose to 69%, at 18 months to 83%. OFA won’t certify until 95% of eventual HD is detectable. Which might seem great to a newbie, but newbies don’t understand the 2 functions of xrays.
• To guide the surgeon – I HOPE that such dogs aren’t used for breeding!
• To inform breeders as to how risky the PARENTS are. To understand how BIF-scoring does that, you need only know that it uses a 0=”perfect” to 106=”oh my gawd!” scale and that the GSD average in Australia is 13-to-14, then click http://www.gsdcouncilaustralia.org/schemes.htm#GSDCA%20Hip%20and%20Elbow%20Dysplasia%20Control%20Scheme scroll to “GSDCA Hip Dysplasia (HD) and Elbow Dysplasia (ED) Control Schemes”, click the most recent “Report” link in each section.
If you can’t understand the significance of those figures – especially the “worst” score per sire and the percentage of his pups with high scores, you are not yet mentally equipped to be a breeder – you would be yet another ignorant BYBer damaging my breed’s hard-earned reputation.

Do you even recognise a genuine GSD, as opposed to what we sneeringly term AlsatiOns, German Crouchers, NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs, Prick-Eared Bassets, Titanic Tail-Tuckers? See http://www.leabashiba.com/fashion.vs.GSD.htm

• Decide WHAT field you want to aim your pups at.
• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.
Click its Links => Defining_a_GSD & start studying to see what genuine breeders do to prove their GSDs breed-worthy.

• If it IS actual GSDs that you want, learn FCI#166 off by heart, and start attending events run by organisations catering for genuine GSDs. In Britain you need clubs that belong to its Breed Council, in Canada the GSSCC, in the USofA either the USCA or the WDA – all have head office contacts in the Links => GSD_Clubs section of the group above.
It’s partly to develop your “eye” for the qualities of genuine GSDs, partly to start learning which kennels consistently produce bitches WITH those qualities.
• If it’s a deviation that you want, attend events conducted by ITs organisation, for the same reasons.

• Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects & use they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

• Once you identify some suitable-seeming breeders, contact them (maybe through their web-sites) then compare them using Choosing_a_GSD.doc downloaded from the above group’s Files (you have to join to access Files, but acceptance is instant), then discuss your top candidates with experienced members of your groups.

YOU don’t choose the pup, unless the breeder thinks that there are 2 equally suitable for your stated needs. A breeder good enough to pass everything I’ve listed above KNOWS how his/her pups will develop, so won’t let you choose an unsuitable one – he doesn’t want YOU ruining his kennel’s reputation by showing an ugly mutt or failing in SchutzHund with a timid mutt, he doesn’t want YOU producing such with HIS kennel as the bit.ch-line!

I hope that, if your wish isn’t just a childish whim, you choose TRUE GSD type – the world NEEDS typical GSDs, GSDs with the right agility & attitude & behaviour & biddability & courage & determination & endurance, but it DOESN’T need more crap that ends up in rescue groups because of poor attitude or health or untrainability or outright cowardice, or gets shot for biting.

The German Shepherd Dog Breed Profile

The Alsatian, commonly known as the German Shepherd Dog, is a working dog breed that often acts as military dogs, guard dogs, police dogs, or search and rescue dogs. They are used because they can be trained in protection and obedience easily and they like to please their owners.

German Shepherd Dogs are large, strong dogs that have coats with either long or short hair. Their coats’ colors vary, but are mostly seen in tan and brown. However, there are some German Shepherds who are completely black or white. German Shepherds’ ears stand up erect and they also have long tails.

There are several lines of German Shepherd, all of which have different looks, behavior and skills. The international working line of German Shepherds are bred as working dogs. They are quite tough but their appearance varies. The North American show line of German Shepherds are bred for their appearance, which is unique to them. Their backs are more angled than a typical German Shepherd’s and unfortunately this can be bad for their backs. They are also believed to not have the working dog traits of the other lines. The international show line of German Shepherd Dog also is bred more so on appearance, so they typically look the same.

German Shepherds tend to develop great loyalty and are very obedient towards their owners. Due to their strong teeth and jaws, they can be trained to attack. Unfortunately, they can also become too aggressive or become fearful if not bred properly. Many of these types of dogs, who are either poorly bred or have owners who don’t train them properly, end up in puppy mills. Since German Shepherds are frequently used as attack and police dogs, they have received an image of being quite dangerous. However, most German Shepherds make great pets for families and are not aggressive.

German Shepherds are very emotional dogs and are quite loyal. They are sometimes used as guide dogs, but that is on the decline as they can get separation anxiety and trauma. As stated earlier, different lines of German Shepherds vary in temperament. Working dogs have more energy and are more obedient. They are intelligent and become upset if they do not get enough exercise. They like to have a job to do, which is why they are often used as rescue dogs. North American lines of German Shepherd Dogs are more fitted for the role of companions.

Due their large size, German Shepherds can suffer from elbow problems and hip dysplasia. They may have skin allergies or have von Willebrand’s disease. The average life span of a German Shepherd is twelve years.

German Shepherd Dogs were discovered in the late 1800s by Captain Max von Stephanitz and were meant to be a diverse working dog. American and British soldiers of World War I then brought German Shepherds to their homes and they became popular dogs. They were used as family pets and as working dogs.

German Shepherds are very versatile in the type of things they can do. They are highly intelligent and like to please and protect their owners. For this reason, they can become great guard dogs, rescue dogs, or police dogs and also make good pets for families.

German Shepherd Aging

How big should my white german shepherd puppy be at age 4.5 months?

He is so little he only weighs around 20 pounds is that normal?

the below is a web page to a GSD website that has a weight chart for puppies. Your dog is definitely below the average weight for his age. What does the vet think? Did you mention it when he had his last shots?
I would take him to the vet for a check up, just in case there is a problem. There is a digestive problem that GSD are prone for.
Also, discuss diet with your vet, make sure you are feeding your pup a good quality puppy kibble.

Dog Owners Guide : German Shepherd Aggression

While German Shepherds may not inspire the ill-placed fear of such breeds as Rottweilers and Pit Bulls, they do land on many banned breed lists.

In fact, it is more of a reputation of being aggressive that German Shepherds have acquired. Owners of these dogs will mostly deny that German Shepherd aggression is a concern, but, unfortunately, the number of incidents of these dogs attacking people and other dogs can’t be ignored. However, whilst genetics are a factor, the biggest problem is mis-training, or even no training, by their owners.

It would be wrong to think that this trait of inappropriate aggressive behavior is displayed by all, or even most, German Shepherds. It is wholly unfair to let the misdemeanours of the minority result in the entire breed being labeled as “dangerous” or “aggressive”.That being said, it is vital for owners to learn to recognize the signs of German Shepherd aggression, so that they can immediately begin to work to bring them under control.

Aggression can take many forms. Some German Shepherds only act aggressively towards other dogs. Some will display aggression only if they are approached whilst they are chewing a bone or eating. Others are aggressive toward strangers, and others even show aggression to some human members of the household in which they live.

Don’t discount even minor forms of aggression, say to a cat or the postman, because these could easily escalate into something more serious. If you do notice signs of aggression in your dog, proper training and handling can turn the behavior around and, potentially, save your dog’s life.

Some owners make the mistake of yelling at or hitting their German Shepherd when he displays aggressive behavior. For the most part, this makes the overall situation worse, as the dog becomes less trusting of humans.By doing so, you are also placing yourself and those around you at immediate risk – it is quite possible that your dog will fight back on being hit and will starting biting and leaping at those nearest to it.

Obedience training is a much better solution for dealing with German shepherd aggression. The best results are seen with younger dogs, but don’t let the age of your dog put you off from trying it at any time. Even old dogs can learn to be obedient, it just takes a little more time.

You can learn a lot about obedience training through online resources. They will tell you how to read the signals that dogs give off and how to get them to obey your voice commands. You will be able to find general information on the topic, and also specifics for each breed. It’s also increasing common to be able to find videos on obedience dog training too, which can really help your understanding of it.

So, online information and videos are the best place to start, and these might be enough in themselves; however, there is also the option of taking your dog to professional dog obedience classes. This are fairly widespread, so you should be able to find one near to you.

My Puppy keeps chewing on his feet?? Help??

My German Shepherd puppy keeps chewing on his own feet and I have No idea why. As he is also a Parvo survivor and is only 14 weeks.
Do they itch or something? His father had some kind of problem and had to have a couple tows amputated could this be the beginning stages of something else. He has plenty of toys, bones, Kongs. We are also working with him on quitting chewing on rocks and tile grout. But I am really worried bout his feet. They said he would probably eat wood and poop to replenish stuff he lost during parvo but NOT his feet.

I think that it may just be an itch.
If its just a habit, then you should put something on his feet that he won’t like the taste of like some kind of spicy powder on the fur part of his feet. He’ll taste that and not want to chew. He’ll probably stop after a few days, then you can discontinue putting the powder on his feet.

Where to Buy a Rare, Seasonal, Retired, and Favorite Dog Webkinz Asap!

For kids who wish for a pet and playmate, the Webkinz Dog (Dog Webkinz) manufactured by Ganz makes a great pair. And for parents who want to make their kids wishes come true and don’t want the mess ups, a Webkinz may offer the best option. This stuffed animal toy including the Lil’ Kinz (smaller version) offers many different breeds. Although both versions were designed for preschoolers, tweens and teens, parents also have been known to collect them as well.

Webkinz and Lil’ Kinz plush toys have a cute cuddly look and feel that makes them huggable pets as well as a comfort to bring home. But more importantly, their virtual capabilities have made them one of the most popular interactive toys in the USA and Canada today. Although their increasing popularity have brought them fame, there comes scarcity and lack of variety when trying to find a favorite in local toy stores.

How Webkinz And Lil’ Kinz Virtual Features Work In A nutshell

After making a purchase, you simply activate your new pet’s secret code in Webkinz World. Next you register, adopt and name your pet, then watch as it comes to life as a cartoon-like character. Your pet will have its own unique personality, bag of tricks, and special food. The magic begins as your child experiences awesome fun while playing in Webkinz World, a social network website that teaches kids in a clever way. In other words, kids go to Webkinz World to play, care for their pets, and learn real life things in a virtual kind of way.

As a parent, you will enjoy the entire process especially when you see how your child learns many interesting things–all in a fun delightful way. But in order for the fun to start, there comes a little finesse when trying to find and buy a favorite Webkinz Dog.

As a dog lover, you and your child can find a favorite. Whether it’s a large breed (inches in size) such as the German Shepherd, St. Bernard and  Doberman or a smaller breed (inches in size) such as the Poodle, Chihuahua and Yorkie, you can find a hard to find favorite easily as well as a large number of them at no extra cost or delay. In fact, you and your child can see all the Webkinz and Lil’ Kinz pictures, over 132 of them, including all Webkinz Dogs.

Local Retail Stores vs. Online Stores

Parents have two options where to buy a Webkinz or Lil’ Kinz, either a local retail toy store or online toy store. Choosing a local retail store offers the quickest way to buy a Webkinz or Lil’ Kinz. You can call a store before traveling there to find out if they carry your favorite Webkinz pet. If they don’t have it in stock, usually you can order it and get on a waiting list. Once your order arrives, the store will contact you or you can contact them. Usually, a store will tell you when their next shipment will arrive. They should also have a catalog for you to see all the Webkinz and Lil’ Kinz pictures to help you find a favorite.

However, retail toy stores often lack variety and there exist scarcity as well as waiting weeks for your Webkinz or Lil’ Kinz to arrive at the store. And if you want a hard to find, seasonal or retired Webkinz, local stores simply don’t carry them. They rather stock the newer Webkinz and Lil’ Kinz instead. Therefore, you may have some work to do when trying to find a retail store with your favorite. On the other hand, a store can call one of the other franchise stores, if available, to see whether or not they have your favorite. But more than likely, they may not have the rare, seasonal, or retired Webkinz you may want such as the Webkinz Cheeky Dog.

On the other hand, you have another option. If you want to avoid the crowds, standing in lines, and don’t want to opt for a waiting list, then consider online stores. You can get instant access to specialized toy stores and target exactly what you want quickly, as well as receive more variety, quantity, breeds, and pictures that you can’t shake a stick at. Finding a one-stop shop n’ go website that includes Webkinz, Lil’ Kinz and accessories makes shopping online both easy and quick. And you’ll have the toy you want at your doorstep in a matter of days.

Your child will have fun looking at all the pictures over the Internet while selecting favorites, and will become more excited when anticipating the delivery date. Online stores create another benefit for parents. For instance if you consider yourself a bargain hunter, then you have the option to place a bid to win a Webkinz Dog auction online and save money. So instead of buying one Webkinz, you could get a good bargain for two or more.

Whichever choice you make, whether shopping online or off, remember when giving your child or someone else a favorite Dog Webkinz only enhances his/her happiness. As far as popular opinion goes, Webkinz toys offer the best gift that any kid could ever want–they simply go crazy over them.

can German Shepherds and Jack Russells live together?

i currently have a Jack Russell(female) that is 3years old and female and i really want to get a german shepherd that is still a puppy.
my jack russell barks at every dog that walks past. mneighborur has a trained Sussex Spaniel X (i think)(Female) and my dog digs holes under the fence and visits this dog every so often. they seem to get along sniffing each other ansometimeses jumping and getting scared from each other.

i want to get a Male pup german shepherd.

Generally, if you bring a puppy into the home with an older dog, the puppy will be submissive the and older dog dominant, no matter what the size. But, dogs are individuals and often times dogs hit it off and are friendly right away, other times, they simply tolerate the other’s existence. There’s just no accounting for taste sometimes. Also, your JRT is still fairly young and it seems to be that the younger your dog is when you introduce a new pup, the better the chances are that they will get along.

Dog Retinal Dysplasia Disorder

Retinal dysplasia refers to a disorder in which the cells and layer of retinal tissue did not develop properly. It is usually a nonprogressive disease and can be caused by viral infections, drugs, vitamin A deficiency, or genetic defects. Retinal dysplasia is characterized by folds or rosettes (round clumps) of the retinal tissue. The normal retina lines the back of the eye.  The retinal cells receive light stimuli from the external environment and transmit the information to the brain where it is interpreted to become vision. In retinal dysplasia, there is abnormal development of the retina, present at birth. The disorder can be inherited, or it can be acquired as a result of a viral infection or some other event before the pups were born.

Retinal dysplasia can be focal, multifocal, geographic, or accompanied by retinal detachment. Focal and multifocal retinal dysplasia appears as streaks and dots in the central retina. Geographic retinal dysplasia appears as an irregular or horseshoe-shaped area of mixed hyper or hyporeflectivity in the central retina. Retinal detachment occurs with complete retinal dysplasia, and is accompanied by blindness in that eye. Cataracts or glaucoma can also occur secondary to retinal dysplasia. Other causes of retinal dysplasia in dogs include infection with canine adenovirus or canine herpesvirus, or radiation of the eye in newborns. Some dogs have no symptoms and can only be identified with an ophthalmic examination. More severely affected puppies may be partially or totally blind. Retinal dysplasia has been seen in many other breeds as well, including the akita (folds,geographic/detachment), Australian shepherd (folds), beagle (folds), Belgian malinois (folds), border terrier (folds), bull mastiff (folds), Cairn terrier (multifocal folds, geographic), cavalier King Charles spaniel (folds and geographic/detached), clumber spaniel (folds), collie (folds), field spaniel (folds), German shepherd (folds), Gordon setter (folds), mastiff (folds), Norwegian elkhound (folds), old English sheepdog (folds), Pembroke Welsh corgi (folds and geographic/detached), rottweiler (folds), samoyed (folds,geographic/detached), soft-coated wheaten terrier (folds), Sussex spaniel (folds). Labrador retrievers and samoyeds with retinal dysplasia may also have a bony abnormality called chondrodysplasia, or dwarfism. The dog’s front legs are shorter and thicker than normal.

The effect on vision of the mildest form (folding of the retina) is not known. The abnormal retinal folds may disappear with age in dogs that are only mildly affected. There is some loss of vision or blindness with the geographic or detached forms of retinal dysplasia, and this is present for the dog’s whole life. With their acute senses of smell and hearing, dogs can compensate very well for visual difficulties, particularly in familiar surroundings.

There is no treatment for retinal dysplasia. With their acute senses of smell and hearing, dogs can compensate very well for visual difficulties, particularly in familiar surroundings. In fact owners may be unaware of the extent of vision loss. You can help your visually impaired dog by developing regular routes for exercise, maintaining your dog’s surroundings as constant as possible, introducing any necessary changes gradually, and being patient with your dog. The only way to prevent it is to make sure that the active carriers of RD gene do not breed. All breeding dogs should be registered with the Canine Eye Registry Foundation and should be evaluated before being bred, and then tested yearly by certified eye specialists. Dogs affected with geographic or detached retinal dysplasia, their parents and their littermates should not be bred. The situation is less clear in those breeds that have retinal folds, since the genetic relationship between the 3 forms is not known.

White German Shepherd Puppy eating chew toy!?

My White GSD was chewing its Hartz chewing toy sticks, then she started cutting it, chewing it and swallowing it! Is this normal dog behavior or is it hazardous to its health? I don’t know (first dog I adopt)
I bought my White GSD puppy a Rawhide chew toy (Hartz), its a stick that looks like wood. Today, as she was playing with it, it chew off the end part after part and swallowed half of it! PLZ HELP!!! Will she choke? Is this hazardous or normal?!?!?!?! IM REALLY SCARED FOR HER!!!

It’s probably best not to give your dog those if he chews through them that easy, though you shouldn’t worry. Your dog is probably fine but most vets recommend not giving them rawhide treats and things because they can mess with your dogs digestive system. He’s most likely fine, but if you notice anything odd, such as a change in eating habits or blood in his stool take him to a vet right away.

I recommend a Kong toy for a GSD, they look like red or black rubber snowmen, and are very tough to chew apart.

German Shepherd: Hookworms

Miecke and the Worms

My family has always owned dogs. It is our tradition. We cannot even imagine our lives without dogs. We have also been very lucky. We never had any trouble with our dogs. All our dogs were easy to train and very trustworthy. We were spoiled. Everything changed when Miecke came into our lives. Miecke is an adorable German shepherd. Cute as a button.

I remember it very clearly when my husband brought her home. She was so calm, so patient, and so quiet. We thought we hit a jackpot with that one. But we were also curious. Isn’t she just a tad too quiet? And then it got worse. She became inactive, her gums and ears became pale, she started eating her poop, and her poop smelled so badly, our eyes welled up. All that happened in a very short time period.

We knew we had to take her to the vet right away. The only reason we waited so long was because the man who gave her to us said she had just been to the vet and was de-wormed. Our vet diagnosed Miecke with hook worms, gave her the medicine, and she got well very quickly. The sweet, quiet, passive puppy changed into a little tornado before our very eyes. But that is a different story.

What have I learned from this experience? Never trust blindly the person who gives you a puppy. Take the pup to the vet right away. Be alert when your puppy is too mild mannered. Lethargy, smelly fecal matter, white gums and ears are just some of the indicators that there can be worms present in your puppy’s digestive system.

More adventures of Miecke, our German Shepherd, can be found at http://gsd-training.blogspot.com

How Dog Food May Affect Your Pet’s Health

After starting a business focused on healthy dog products Distinctive Dog (www.distinctivedog.com), a new world opened up regarding the state of dog nutrition and what manufacturers do not tell consumers.

There is much debate when it comes to dog food, treats and pet nutrition. In the wild, dogs inherently hunted and consumed animals and plants. Their digestive systems were designed to break down raw meat while the enzymes present in the meat aided the digestion process.

Today, most domesticated dogs eat processed kibble containing primarily grains and refined protein sources. Once the meat source is removed, the remaining ingredients are mostly unnatural for the pet. Wheat, barley, rice, corn and oats are all man-raised crops that a dog would never eat in the wild. So how have dogs adapted to a diet consisting mostly of grains and processed protein sources?

To begin with, dogs are highly allergy prone animals. Wheat, corn, soy and barley are common culprits of allergies in dogs. The most interesting factor here is that most of these substances are not contained in the dog’s natural food chain.

Corn is an inferior protein source and some experts contend that the dog’s liver must work overtime to extract useable protein, which in the process produces excess nitrates. These nitrates place extra strain on the liver and as some veterinarians will say, is one cause of premature aging.

Wheat, soy, barley and white rice have very little nutritional value and are used by manufacturers to squeeze more profit out of their products. As a fun experiment, place your dog’s dry food in water for about 10 minutes.  If it swells dramatically, it probably contains high amounts of these grains.

There are a variety of theories on the affects of processed dog food and dog treats on our pets. Veterinarian John B. Symes writes and speaks on the affects of gluten, casin from cow’s milk, corn and soy on otherwise healthy dogs. He is a “recovered” celiac and believes these substances are blocking nutrient absorption during the dog’s digestion process.

Many of these ingredients are used as filler in commercial dog food and when mixed with water, create a sticky substance. Symes points out that the dog’s digestive tract is not designed to break down these materials and the resulting partially-digested sticky material coats the intestines, blocking absorption of essential nutrients.

“Imagine that a German shepherd puppy begins eating a wheat, barley, corn, or soy-based diet from the moment it is weaned. If inadequate levels of calcium and vitamin C are absorbed, what are the chances that its hips, elbows, spine, and other cartilaginous structures are going to form properly? I would say “Not good”. Most people familiar with dogs know that this breed has a reputation for horrible hip dysplasia. But, they also have serious allergies and other immune-related disorders. This, of course, is no coincidence. Once it is understood that the allergies form in the area of the gut that is being damaged or coated by the ‘glue’, it is easy to see why the trouble breeds like the German Shepherd, Cocker Spaniel, Shih Tzu, and others have their ‘genetic’ tendencies such as allergic skin and ear problems, orthopedic abnormalities, intervertebral disc ruptures, and cancers,” contends Symes.

Another way dog food and treat manufacturers cut costs is through the protein sources. Most dog foods contain protein sources labeled as “meal”, “digest” or “by-product”. These ingredients contain meat sources that are deemed unsuitable for human consumption. Rendering plants process dead animal and other matter for animal feed, and yes pet food. With virtually no government regulation, these often contaminated protein sources pass as our dog’s dinner.

One regulation on the books was written in the National Research Council’s 1974 publication, The Nutrient Requirement of Dogs. It states that all mammals (except humans) are legally allowable “meat” for rendering as long as they are not decayed. Some states have passed an additional standard excluding dying, dead, disabled, or diseased tissues.

Deborah Lynn Dadd in her book The Nontoxic Home and Office: Protecting Yourself and Your Family form Everyday Toxins and Hazards states, “Each year about 116,000 mammals and nearly 15 million birds are condemned before slaughter. After killing, another 325,000 carcasses are discarded and more than 5.5 million major parts are cut away because they are determined to be diseased. Shockingly, 140,000 tons of poultry is condemned annually, mainly from cancer. The diseased animals that cannot be sold are processed into animal feed.

Now, there is no way to substantiate the claims but I do know that there is no real way to truly know what these ingredients actually contain. In addition, the food is processed at extremely high temperatures during the rendering process which kills much of the nutritional value that may have been present.

When we begin to examine our dog’s diet, one only wonders why dogs are prone to allergies and health issues. William D. Cusick, author of Canine Nutrition & Choosing the Best Food for Your Dog states that nations with generations of dogs raised on commercial pet food have experienced canine longevity decreases up to 50 percent. In addition they have recorded increases in cancers, reproductive complications and other health issues. Hypothesized reasons include environmental pollution, pesticides, vaccinations, urbanization, fluoridated water and commercial pet food.

Cusick furthers his point by stating that in identical environments, humans have increased life expectancy while dogs have decreased. Moreover, in countries where commercial dog food is unavailable these decreases have not been documented. This point cannot be overstated. It points to the dire need for structured research to substantiate the empirical evidence and governmental regulation within the pet food industry.

Today there is no way to concretely determine the health consequences of commercial dog food and grain based diets. As a result of these concerns, many people choose to feed their dogs a Bones and Raw Food diet (BARF). These holistic diets provide a diet closest to what dogs eat in the wild. Our pet’s stomachs are designed to process raw meat and they receive live enzymes not present in cooked food.

Another option is home cooked meals. This can be a tricky option because some human food can be toxic for our pets. A good book on the subject is Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets: the Healthful Alternative by Dr. Donald Strombeck. Dog nutrition is different than human nutrition, so I recommend you check with your veterinarian before considering either a BARF or home-prepared diet.

At the very minimum, read and understand pet food labels and ingredients. Ingredient labels are listed in order of quantity. Locate products with minimal levels of wheat or wheat by-products, corn, soy or barley. These are fillers that can adversely affect your dog’s digestive system and if your dog is allergic, they can cause itchy and flakey skin, dull coat and hair loss. These grains should never be listed as the primary ingredient in your dog’s food. Also, understand protein sources and ensure that the protein sources you are providing your pet are high quality and not from rendered sources.

As a general rule of thumb, do not look for quality pet food at your local grocery store or pet store chain.  Specialty pet stores often have greater expertise and can help you find the right food for your pet. If you are looking for healthy dog treats, many companies including Distinctive Dog Bakery (www.distinctivedog.com), offer home baked dog treats free from wheat gluten, soy, corn and other harmful ingredients.

Lastly, consider supplementing your dog’s diet with enzymes and probiotics. Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help in digestion and the absorption of nutrients. They prevent harmful bacteria from growing and causing problems including gas, diarrhea and vomiting. Enzymes help complement probiotics during the digestion process. Adding an enzyme-probiotic mix to your dog’s diet can improve digestion, create better hair coats and increase immune function.

Symptoms Of Bone Cancer

This can attach to any bone, but limbs are the most affected.

Symptoms Of Bone Cancer

Osteosarcoma dogs run in family lines, and these dogs just have a genetic predisposition to it. Other dogs could even have abnormalities that attract the cancers where radiation or chemicals as well as metal implants and such have been used.

Symptoms of Canine Osteosarcoma

When the condition moves forward in stages, it will become more painful for your dog and the affected area will swell and become lame. Early stages show lameness occurs only sometimes, but over time it will take place for longer periods.

Your Dog’s Diagnosis

If any of the prior discussed symptoms are seen, you should always take him or her directly to your vet’s office for testing. X-rays of the affected area will be taken, and in rare cases there will be a bone biopsy done to give a definitive diagnosis. This is rarely done because of the pain and anesthesia involved.

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

Treatment of Canine Osteosarcoma

The osteosarcoma has to be treated immediately to ensure that the tumor doesn’t spread. Medications will be given for pain, and the possibility of amputation may be needed if there is too much pain involved. However, this can be avoided if the bone can be replaced and then radiation and chemo are given for longer term treatment. There are natural alternatives that work will with conventional medicine.

Janet Markowitz has been a German Shepherd Breeder for over 20 years. She has always been interested in using natural and holistic remedies for her Shepherds whenever possible. She has found that by using natural Remedies in conjunction with conventional medicine, she has achieved great success in the health and longevity in her dogs.

I want to buy a White German Shepherd in Central Texas?

I AM LOOKING TO BUY A PUPPY GERMAN SHEPHERD IN THE CENTRAL TEXAS AREA OR IN MISSOURI.NEEDS AKC AND HAS TO BE PURE WHITE GERMAN SHEPHERD. ANYONE KNOW OF A BREEDER WHO IS SELLING THEM FOR LESS THAN $800.00.THANKS EVERYONE
I dont want a rescue dog .I want to start from a puppy and rescue dogs have alot more issues .And i am not going to add a dog into my family with children who has issues.
and if I am going to pay alot of money for a dog I will get want I want.I asked a simple question if you knew the answer thats one thing (and i say thank you)but giving me rude answers ,well flush them.

try www.akc.org

Contrary to what another person said, white german shepherds CAN ABSOLUTELY be registered with the AKC, but they cannot compete in conformation shows. The white color is a disqualitification…this does not affect their registration, though. I think, originally, when the standard was written, white was a disqualification because many people believed that the color white would make it harder for the dog to do its job (herding).

Even though they are DQ’s in the show ring they can compete in other AKC sanctioned events such as obedience and agility.
