german shepherd pet names
Why Did You Name Your Pet(s) What You Did?
Since I have 5 dogs and don’t want to bore you I’ll tell you about just one. My German Shepherd Roselynn (Rosie) got her name about a week after I got her (I didn’t want to pick a name just to call her something, I wanted to name her after something that matched her character). Anyway every time I would go outside into my garden, she was always in my rose garden, despite the fact roses are one of the few things I grow.
It always amused me, it was something about that rose bush that she liked. I was almost set on calling her Rosie, but just to be sure I observed throughout the week. and her personality fit that of a rose:
Beautiful to look at, delicate, strong, proud, stubborn, fiery, yet meant business and could hurt you if necessary. So I decided To Name her Roselynn, but I always call her Rosie lol
My display pic is part of a series of photos in tribute to Rosie.
i called my cockatiels Dickie-Bird and Harley-Quinn, coz i love batman, so i wanted to call them batman themed names, and after watching them for a few days, i noticed the male loved to hang upside-down and climb all over the bars of the cage… a bit like a gymnast lol, so i called him Dick (after dick grayson, or robin), and noticing that the female was funny, but a bit naughty i called her Harley-Quinn, after the jester-ish villain
– then i changed Dick to Dickie-Bird to fit the other double-barrel name
i called my dog Grayson again after batmans Robin, coz i’m sad lol. i’d been thinking about names for him from the moment i decided to get a new dog, like Archie and Dillan, but the moment i actually saw him he just looked like a Grayson – and so the name stuck
Seth and Gravy the geckos… Seth was a rescue gecko, and so her growth has been stunted and she looks like somebody has sat on her
i named her Seth (becuase i didnt know she was a girl) and she is really short like that actor Seth Green ![]()
Gravy was named Gravy because it was the first word that came to me head when i got her ![]()
but everyone says she should be called custard because she is bright yellow… but thats not very original is it.
Vyvyan and Rik the beardies were named after my two favourite actors/comedians Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson in the Young Ones (where there names were Rick and Vyvyan) – and beardies are crazy and funny, but still lovable
Millie and Calvin the parrotlets were named that because Calvin Clein underwear is really comfy… and my mum thought that Millie was a pretty name, and it fit her
Derek the fish was named so after i won him and another called Troy from the fair and the 2 workers there were called Derek and Troy ![]()
but troy died, so i got another, which i called Penelope becuase she was yellow and pretty, and then my mum said if we found a fish with a black splodge on his nose we could get him… and we actually did – and after we decided splodge wasnt too good a name, we settled on Flash because he was silvery-orange, like a flash of light
Max the monitor was called so after thinking of several names that didnt seem right, liek Chuck (from the tv show), Jake (as in Gyllenhaal), Heath, as in Ledger) and Bruce (batman). Then we turned to names starting with M, becuase he was a Monitor ![]()
we thought up Merlin, Mocha, Miko but none of them fit. Then i said Sobek, after the egyptian crocodile god, but apparently thats a stupid name, so after watching that simpsons episode where homer changes his name to Max, we decided to call him Max, 1) becuase thats the name we all agreed on, 2) it began with M, 3) he’s gonna be big and incharge (lol), like Roman Maximus

The German Shepherd Dog truly is a wonderful animal and not only do they make good working dogs, they also make superb family pets. They are however very different from other pet breeds and need to be handled and trained with a different approach to say your average labrador or poodle for instance.
The GSD is a large, strong athletic dog, which needs a lot of mental stimulation and exercise but a well trained shepherd can learn to do almost anything. These dogs positively thrive on challenging activities and they are so willing to serve their master and please. As a working dog used by most police forces, the very look of a GSD is usually enough to act as a deterrent but when called into action there are few dogs that can match the German Shepherd as an all rounder.
If you are considering becoming an owner of a GSD then you need to consider the commitment to training in order that you have happy, well behaved German Shepherd dog that you can take out safely in public.
If you haven’t previously owned one of these dogs then please do not take on a youngster lightly. Being involved in GSD rescue I have lost count of the number of young dogs I have had to re-home because owners bought them without doing a bit of research first.
As youngsters they can be very boisterous and can easily knock over children or elderly relatives, especially if you do not discourage the dog from jumping up when excited. A bored GSD can be very destructive and if left alone will trash your house and contents with ease using their big teeth and claws. Unfortunately these dogs don’t really mature until they are about 3 years old so you are in for the long haul to get through the puppy and adolescent stage
The German Shepherd needs to be well socialised from an early age and needs plenty of exposure to people and other dogs so that they do not develop aggressive tendencies as they mature.
Joining a dog training class from an early age is a good idea and most clubs will accept dogs into the puppy classes from about 4 months onwards. This should be good fun for your puppy and allows him to play and to socialise but it also serves the purpose of teaching him or her what is acceptable and what is not. This will prove invaluable grounding for your German Shepherd training.
When choosing a dog training class do check out a few first as not all classes make German Shepherds welcome and if any club asks that you muzzle your dog, please give it a miss and move on and find another club. No reputable dog training class would require a dog to be muzzled. If your dog is aggressive towards other dogs there are better ways of controlling the dog safely such as by using a Canny Collar which is a simple effective head collar similar to those used on horses.
The earlier you start training and socialisation the better as GSD’s often develop a tendency to be aggressive towards other dogs and also towards strangers and they can become very protective towards their owners and property.
Another important part of training your german shepherd is to get him used to being groomed because they shed copious amounts of hair and although they only moult once a year, it lasts for 365 days. So be prepared for dog hair all over your house, your clothes, in your food and buy yourself a very good vacuum cleaner.
Training your German Shepherd should be very much part of everyday life and is should be fun so stick with it because it really will be worth it in the end.

german shepherd fighting
Is 1 golden retriever, 1 german shepherd and 1 yorkshire dog going to be a problem?
I want to get 1 golden retriever, 1 german shepherd and a yorkshire. I want to get them as puppies but i’m concerned about whether they’d fight when they got older or what. I want to know which dog should be which gender and what I can do to keep the dogs from fighting, especially keeping the bigger ones from attacking the yorkshire.
I can’t tell if this is what you are considering or not, but do NOT get three puppies at the same time! Two would overwhelm the vast majority of people, even those great with dogs. You should get one pup first, and wait until it’s at least six months old before introducing another, though waiting until a year old would be better.
I think the best situation would be for the German Shepherd to be male, the other two female based on the nature of the breeds. Just make sure all are spay/neutered as soon as possible or you will have issues with fighting.
Also, based on breed nature and to avoid the big ones harming the little one, the Yorkshire should be the last addition so it is introduced to a dog at least a year old and a dog at least six months old, reducing risk of fights and the little one being trampled.
Have you researched the breeds carefully? As puppies both Goldens and Shepherds will reek havoc on your house. German Shepherds especially are very good dogs(my personal favorite), but they need a strong leader and lots and lots of exercise and training – failure to exercise an hour DAILY or more as needed as well as not providing mental stimulation, especially as a puppy, will result likely result in a badly behaved, destructive dog.
Make sure you know what you’d be getting yourself into and are looking towards the future to be sure you can always manage and careful these dogs properly so they don’t end up euthanized or in a shelter somewhere, or you don’t have to rehome them somewhere down the road.

German Shepherds are a breed popular for the high intellect and great strength. These qualities make the breed a fantastic working dog, capable of adapting to varied environments, tasks, and handlers. For these reasons, they are often chosen to work as service dogs. German Shepherds are used in therapy, rescue work, and, probably most often, law enforcement.
You have probably seen law enforcement dogs from time to time, and more often than not, that dog was most likely a German Shepherd. German Shepherds have been employed with the United States military and the police force for decades. In large cities, you will see these law enforcement shepherds patrolling streets, trains, and airports with their officer handlers. In smaller communities they are typically used for rescue missions or specific investigations, such as suspicion of narcotics possession.
German Shepherds are often seen at the side of their officer handler, obediently going where he or she goes and responding immediately to given commands. When docile and standing down, these German Shepherds seem like little more than household family pets who have been trained to obey their owners. When the time comes, however, the German Shepherd is an intelligent and effective police dog. They patrol with their officer handlers ready to fight the good fight alongside them. On command, one of these police dogs could chase a criminal on foot for miles farther than any human officer in the best of shape. These dogs are trained to subdue and hold any criminals caught in pursuit until their human partners arrive and they are release with a specific command.
German Shepherds also have an impeccable sense of smell. For this reason, they are frequently used as tracking dogs. Sometimes tracking dogs will be given a sent of a missing person to help search and recover clues or the person themselves. German Shepherds are also used to recover and rescue victims of natural disasters who may be caught deep inside architectural rubble and who would never have been found otherwise. They are also used as cadaver dogs, being easily trained to smell the decomposition of human flesh and recover decaying cadavers from wreckage.
The primary use of a German Shepherd’s sniffing abilities, however, is what they excel at. German Shepherds are frequently used as narcotics dogs, detecting drugs like marijuana or cocaine in an investigation or in airports. These dogs are so talented and well trained that they can smell things a human would not even dream of catching a whiff of. Upon catching a sent of drugs, the dogs will bark or otherwise alert their officer handlers, who will pursue the investigation further.
If you have ever encountered a law enforcement German Shepherd, you may have heard his or her officer handler giving commands in what seems like jibberish. This is not the case, in fact. Most dogs that work in law enforcement are trained in languages uncommon in the United States, such as German. This minimizes any risk of criminals understanding the commands used for a specific dog, and will prevent them from trying to issue commands of their own.
German Shepherds excel in law enforcement and are celebrated for the work that they do. The next time you see a K9 Unit officer, be proud to know that this pooch is defending your rights and your community along side the men and women of the law.

german shepherd old age problems
German shepherd leg problems?
I have a german shepherd aged 10. and for a while now he has had problems with his legs. and when i took him for a walk he fellover and it took him a while to get back up again. also his legs look really stiff and i have been feeding him the pedigree stick things for older dogs. thank you…x
I shudder to think what “pedigree stick things” might be. The proper diet for a dog is based on raw meat, with periodic cooked table scraps as a supplement.
Unless pain is involved, I’d say that he has DM aka Degenerative Myelitis/Myelopathy, a disease that attacks the nerves and prevents the signals from the brain reaching the back legs and vice-versa. If he drags his nails on the carpet or ground, that is almost sure to be it. Some people fit wheels to the dog so that it can race around using the power of its front legs and so enjoy a few more years – your 10 year old should have 2-5 years left in him. Dr Clemens developed a diet that slows the progress, but nothing yet cures or stops it.
Study http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Diseases_001198817153/Degenerative_Myelopathy_001200552053/
and see how well it seems to fit your dog. But get your vet to confirm the diagnosis before adding your dog & his parents to the DM Database/Register.
NEVER treat for a problem that you haven’t had properly diagnosed – it is likely to be the wrong treatment and so will not help the dog, and may actually harm it, if only because it delays the start of the PROPER treatment. All drugs, including aspirin, have side-effects. Those side-effects are worth it if the drug manages to cure the problem, but not otherwise.
I currently have my first case, and she isn’t stiff – quite the contrary: her legs get loose on her, especially if she has to squeeze around a corner while pushing through a narrow gap such as a partly open door. She doesn’t care, she still attempts to beat up her 7½ year old sister & 13½ years old cousin when let out of her pen – they’re safe inside their pens. (Although stone deaf for the last 15 months, the oldie responds a couple of times then decides “To heck with it!” so goes and lies down inside her sleeping box where she can not be seen – the boxes have self-closing doors.)
Without pain (expressed when changing between lying & standing, and by intense reluctance to get in or out of a vehicle) it is most unlikely to be Hip Dysplasia or an Anterior Cruciate Ligament problem (each explained in other parts of that site, the ACL being in the section about Knees).
“Sean”:
Learn not just how to spell “my” breed, one developed to HERD sheep, nor “ARD” them (whatever THAT is!), but also some facts about hip dysplasia (you’ll find plenty in the site above). Among the things to learn is that all the genes involved in HD are recessives, which means that both parents can have perfect hips (because in each gene pair a “good” dominant suppresses the “bad” recessive) yet produce severe dysplasia in a quarter of the pups they produce together. Intelligent breeders know that, and so don’t work from just the xray results of the stud & brood they are thinking of mating. People who avoid BYBs and puppy mills and pet shops (which are a prime market for them) have a low chance of getting a GSD with hip problems. My last case of HD was born back in 1983, and wasn’t planned by me – it was a “surprise gift” from a pup allowed to run unsupervised with his on-heat dam because he was too small to reach her “target” and anyway he was too young to be fertile. Yeah, right…..
All those “diagnosing” arthritis:
Go learn about arthritis. Don’t expect to find that it makes sufferers wobbly, what it does is make the sufferer feel as though there is broken glass inside the affected joint. If you have a wobbly grandparent with arthritis, it will be because that knee or hip or foot is so painful that he/she doesn’t exercise enough to keep enough muscle tone to give good control.
Les P, owner of GSD_Friendly: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/GSD_Friendly
“In GSDs” as of 1967

People love big, protective and loving dogs and that’s why there
are a lot of german sheperd breeders. The German Shepherd is
sometimes called an Alsatian because that’s where they
originated in Germany. Many Germans still called them Deutscher
Schaferhund because of their original sheepdog function but the
breed is not very old and was really developed from a variety of
sheep herding farm dogs in the late 1800s. In 1899 Max von
Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, was president of the first
German Shepherd association in Germany. Since then German
Shepherds have turned up all over the world and they came to the
USA as early as 1908 where they were popular with the Red Cross,
the police and as guard dogs. This was partly because they are
extremely loyal and courageous dogs and they are very
intelligent and retain specialized training for a long time.
Temperament is what ensures the usefulness of the German
Shepherd and since this comes from good breeding it is essential
to find a good and reputable breeder. With a bad temperament
these dogs are a disaster. They are highly territorial and will
know and recognize their people and place by about six months of
age. This is when their protective loyalty starts to show
itself! There are many german sheperd breeders and you should
have no problem finding a good one, but just remember that they
come in a range of colors and will protect you no matter what!
They have proved a popular breed over the years for use in both
the police force and as guard dogs for security companies. They
have a very acute sense of hearing which means that they are
invaluable to anyone wanting to protect both themselves and
their property.Because they are a large dog they are a very
useful deterrent against theives.

10 week german shepherd puppy?
I have 10 weeks german shepherd puppy. Yesterday I noticed that his poop is normal but dark green in color. He is acting and eating normal and I do not see any signs of illness. Two days ago I switched to eucanuba puppy food, and i give it to him wet, not dry. Any suggestions for this situation?
It’s because he’s only a puppy, he does not have many dead red blood cells, so his poop comes out green. It’s the same with babies

Miecke and the potty training
Having had multiple dogs before, we knew we had to potty train our adorable German shepherd puppy right away. We always use the same method. We use the crate. So it was a no-brainer that we would have to use the same method on Miecke. Of course, nothing comes easy with Miecke. As adorable and lovable she is, she can be twice as hard-headed. As she HATES to be confined.
The crate system of potty training is simple. During the day, you take them outside shortly after they eat and drink and you praise them extravagantly when they do their business outside. Occasional accidents inside are to be expected. Puppies do not like sitting or sleeping in their own mess. When you put them into their crate at night, you leave them just enough space to lie down. In relatively short period of time they will hold it until they can go out.
Of course Miecke was different. She hated the crate with passion. She cried all night and the mess she made was indescribable. We figured it would pass. After some time, and some sleepless nights, we were ready to throw in the towel. We tried everything. We placed the crate closer to us, far away from us, we limited food and water intake before bedtime, nothing worked. It seemed that Miecke had a special storage in her body where she saved the urine and fecal matter. She decided that we will not be in crate unless we suffer too. We didn’t know what to do.
All of a sudden, she stopped. Out of nowhere. I think that we were just a little more stubborn than she was. What did I learn? That no matter how difficult it seems to train your puppy, it can be done. It takes lots of patience, some sleepless nights, but it must be done. Because if you don’t train your puppy right away, it will never become the kind of dog you really want around your family.
More adventures of Miecke, our German Shepherd, can be found at http://gsd-training.blogspot.com

my dog is not fat or anything actually he needs to gain a little wait but not much.
I have just the thing!
My dog LOVES this little recipe, and let me tell you, she is very picky. It’s also very healthy for diet habits. My dog managed to get to a healthy weight and maintained it while on this diet, and she still is.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A Cup Of Dry Dog Food
A Tablespoon of Beef Broth (for flavor)
About 4 or 5 Cups of Water
1/2 cup assorted cooked veggies (like carrots or peas)
Mix it all together and WALA! Healthy, delicious for picky dogs, and easy to make!
Hope this helps!

As you probably already appreciate, German shepherds are not small dogs which must be kept under control. So German shepherd training is vital from when they are young.
I adopted Sheba, my 56 week old German shepherd, when she was just 2 months old.
I can’t lie to you, she was hard work immediately from the outset!
If I left anything hanging around, I would find it would be chewed up or I’d discover it in the yard. I found out pretty fast that I would have to train her quickly before she ruined my house.
Dog Training Books Were’nt The Answer
Then I bought several books from Online on dog training and tried a couple of tips however Sheba just wouldn’t learn from them.
Gladly, one afternoon I was reading through several dog training sites and discovered something which would open my eyes to precisely what I should have been doing instead and why Sheba was behaving like she was.
It Made Such A Difference
What I learned showed me to have the ability to train the dog within such a short space of time and both of us have never looked back.
Sheba was very quickly obedient and I was able to leave things lying around. The dog suddenly was so well behaved and house trained too. It eliminated all the problems and we got on so well.
If you happen to have a German shepherd and they are giving you issues with behaviour then I should be able to provide the answer by sharing with you what I discovered.
It was really easy however worked practically straight away. I would be able to tell what Sheba was thinking and why the dog was performing the things she did. This was so essential in discovering how to train Sheba correctly.

german shepherd friendly
My wife and I, along with our German Shepherd, are moving to San Antonio.?
I will commute to Laredo twice a week, so we would like to rent a dog-friendly house about 20 or 30 minutes south of San Antonio. Any suggestions for nice towns near i-35?
Lytle, Natalia, Devine, Pearsall are all along I-35 and not far from San Antonio.
My personal recommendation would be to head out Highway 90 to either Castroville or Hondo and see if you can find a place there.
Good luck!

The amazing trainability and eagerness to please give German Shepherds both good and bad personalities, as they can be easily trained to do just about anything – including attacking people. German Shepherd dogs worship the people they live with. They need to be active and have a job to do in order to keep them from being destructive. German Shepherds will worship you and need your attention. Any German Shepherd dog trained to do bad things can be retrained with patience.
What qualities would you look for in a friend? You would hope they would stick by your side through good times and bad. You pray that they will never betray your secrets. You wish that they would help you out when you needed help. You can find all of these qualities in a German Shepherd dog. And, as added benefit, they won’t sue you, either.
You need to do your part in this friendship, as well, in order for it to work out. You have to be patient, have a sense of humor and learn all you can about the German Shepherd breed. You have to be committed to exercising your German Shepherd dog every day, with a walk and play. They need to be active, or else they get a bit hyperactive. They also need regular trips to the vet for inoculations and check ups. Purebred German Shepherds are more inclined to have genetically caused problems than many other breeds of dog. You must be willing to pay any and all medical costs for your friend.
German Shepherd dogs worship the human beings they either live with or are ordered to protect. They would rather hang out with their people than with other dogs. The approval and affection of their people is vital to their sense of well-being. These are not dogs that like to be alone, chained out in the yard. Any German Shepherd left to this fate will overcompensate with hyperactivity in order to get his people’s attention. Since they are such large and powerful dogs, even playful boisterousness can possibly hurt someone.
German Shepherds excel when given specific jobs to do. This is why they are often one of the first breeds of choice for police dogs, search and rescue dogs, assistance dogs and for working in entertainment. Throughout the centuries, they have also played the roles of sheepherders and draft animals as well as their more familiar roles as guard dogs and military dogs.
A German Shepherd dog needs regular exercise, attention and grooming. Getting them spayed or neutered will also not only lengthen their life span, but also make them more willing to pay attention to you. German Shepherds really are not suitable for apartment life, unless they get a lot of outdoor exercise. They learn to leash train very well (and can often be voice trained), whether their owners are walking, jogging, riding a bike or riding a horse.
Hopefully, armed with this German Shepherd information about their basic personality, you will know if a German Shepherd dog is right for your home and lifestyle. There are variations in each dog’s individual personality, as there are with each dog’s physical traits. Some are more timid than others. Some are more serious than others. Some seem more psychic than others. But they need a lot of activity and attention in order to really become a member of your family.
