Please help! I’m really upset about this!?

My German Shepherd dog has been having seizures and we’re going to take him to the vet soon. My mom thinks it’s a brain tumor, and just the thought of a brain tumor really, really scares me! I feel like crying, and I’ve already done that for other reasons today. My dog, Max, is 6 or 7 years old and my mom said we might not have him for much longer! She said he’d have to go through treatment and surgery and that scares me, again. It worries me sooo much just thinking about it. I have anxiety, and that doesn’t help at all. How can I maybe calm down a little?

Epileptic Dogs

Though epilepsy is a well known seizure disorder among humans, dog owners are often surprised to find out about canine epilepsy. Epilepsy is reported to be present in up to 5 percent of dogs. By being more aware of the signs of the condition you can better protect your pet and get him, or her, the treatment needed.

What is canine epilepsy?

Canine epilepsy is a mostly genetic disorder that causes unprovoked seizures in your pet. No dog breed is immune from canine epilepsy although the condition is more common in certain breeds such as German shepherds and beagles. Epilepsy in dogs just as with humans is a burst of activity in the brain, signaling nerve transmissions and interfering with coordination. Epilepsy typically shows up within the first two years of your dog’s life but symptoms can even occur in dogs older than 5 years of age.

Epilepsy Symptoms and Stages

Behavioral changes often occur once a dog develops canine epilepsy. He may be more likely to act aggressively, run around in circles, become angry and have muscle spasms and twitches. Your pet may become more nervous before an attack occurs and seek you out for comfort. Your dog may then begin to tremble and become unaware of his surroundings unable to respond to your commands. After becoming unresponsive dogs may become stiff and fall over. They may then salivate and clench their teeth as they go through convulsions and may lose control of bodily functions. Often the dog may not appear to be breathing during this stage. As the dog recovers from the episode he may seem disoriented, appear out of breath and need to sleep for a while, some dogs are even temporarily blind from the seizure.

What You Can Do

When your dog has a seizure remain calm, take note of how he behaves before, during and after the seizure to report this information to your veterinarian. Take note of your dog’s temperature, if any symptoms occur on only one side of the body, exposure to toxins, past traumas, vaccinations, diet and other information that will help your veterinarian form a proper diagnosis.

Make sure your pet is not near stairs, hard objects or other items where he could fall against or ram into and injure himself. While your pet is having a seizure, you should not attempt to place your hand in his mouth, dogs have very sharp teeth and during a seizure, your pet will be unable to control his body motions and can inadvertently bite you. Most seizures do not require immediate medical attention, especially if they are already receiving treatment. If your pet has a seizure that lasts for more than 20 minutes or has seizures one after another, this could be fatal and you should contact emergency pet services.

It can be hard to treat epilepsy in your dog especially when other conditions in dogs can often resemble a seizure. Middle ear infections can cause your dog to lose its balance. Respiratory diseases can also leave a dog breathless and cause fainting. Consuming poisons, developing heart worm disease or being hit by a car, can also cause seizures. After receiving the proper diagnosis for epilepsy, treatment will include oral medications to help prevent seizures.

Unless her eyes are red, she isn’t albino. Just a normal white German Shepard. Also, white German Shepards are amazingly beautiful to look at! You got a wonderful looking dog there ^^

German shepherd puppy’s nose turning pink?

Recently I noticed a pink dot on her nose, I figured it was a scar, but I just noticed it is starting to spread. I heard of something called “winter nose” and that only happens in winter supposedly but it’s summer and this is happening. What is wrong with her nose? Is there any supplement to stop this?

P.S It started from the front part of her nose where her nostrils are not he top.
Will her nose ever go back to black again? Is pigment loss permanent?
I also just noticed where the pink is on her nose that there is a sort of red color in the center of the pink.

“Snow nose” or “winter nose” is called that because in true cases it is temperature sensitive, vanishing during summer then returning in winter. GSDs displaying a snow nose should not be bred from (as with humans, lack of skin pigment increases the risk of sunburn and skin cancers), and owners of their parents should think VERY hard about whether either parent should ever again have a litter.
But there is so much poor breeding being done – especially in Britain and NAmerica – that the genes that cause the withdrawal of pigment sometimes gets collected in such numbers that the nose stays pink all year around.

If your pup is self-white (as some of [ainawgsd]’s are), expect the pale area to be there for life. Because the 2 pairs of alleles that block all coat pigment prevent the coat from revealing other effects, poor nose pigmentation is relatively common in whites. Check whether the pads on her feet are jet black or are also showing liverish colouration.
If your pup has very pale tan, it is probable that it has some white ancestors, and so some of the same development can be expected.

If your pup is richly-coloured from always-richly-coloured ancestors, but has been doing a lot of digging, what you are seeing is similar to what would happen if you sandpapered a patch of your skin. The solution is to keep your pup too interested in playing & exploring with you to spend time digging!

Many German shepherd dogs and their crosses have weakness in the hindquarters and are lame crocks while fairly young:Many English bulldogs have breathing problems connected to their deformed faces,Dacshunds have overlong backs which cause them problems.
I suppose there are many more of these problems which are clearly hereditary and inbred.I have been thinking about this for awhile and it seems to me that the kennel clubs policies must play a strong part in the U.K.For many years now it has been illegal to breed from crosses and crosses are always neutered.No doubt some do breed but most crossbreed pups must surely now come from pure bred parents and that must mean that breeding is coming from defective parents(unsuccessful showdogs being made to earn their keep before the final jab?)I think its scandalous,Im 73 years old and I never saw such horrors before the last 20 years.
Any body agree with me or otherwise:If you agree any idea what can be done ?

Some dogs are very popular and anyone can breed them. The kennels where I leave my dog occasionally breeds their German Shepherds but the sire and the dam are hip scored and the pups too when they are old enough.

Some breeds need to be banned until they are genetically good. I have a cavalier and his hip score is excellent, however his heart is in a poor way and his lungs have problems too. There are a lot of other defects he could have had too. He is a rescue, I could never have a cavalier pup it would be too heartbreaking.

Some of it is down to the Kennel Club that sets breed and show standards. But the majority of the public are simply unaware of the problems and breeders do not tell them.

Schutzhund: Training And Evaluating The German Shepherd

As you go through life, you are bound to see German Shepherds working in a number of careers. Some are guard dogs, some are therapy dogs, and some work in law enforcement. German Shepherds are immeasurably popular in the working field because their extreme intelligence makes them highly trainable, and their strength and agility makes them capable of performing most tasks. In Germany, standards for German Shepherd breeding and performance are much stricter. A training program called “Schutzhund” was created in the 20th century as a means by which to train and regulate the performance of the breed.

The Schutzhund training and judging process is threefold. There are three separate levels a German Shepherd must complete to become certified in Schutzhund. In the first level, known cleverly as Schutzhund One, the dog in question has to determine eligibility by undergoing a temperament test called a “B Test”. Most handlers will go through basic obedience and socialization training with their German Shepherd prior to attempting the B Test, as it gauges the dog’s ability to obey their owner and interact with distractions such as people or other animals. If a particular dog ever shows signs of fear or fear-based aggression, he or she will be disqualified from the Schutzhund process immediately. Thus, it is important for those pursuing Schutzhund certification to provide proper etiquette training for the dogs from puppyhood, lest the be disqualified and forbidden to breed, compete, or be registered in Germany.

Besides the temperament test, each level of Schutzhund focus on three major areas: obedience, tracking ability, and willingness to act as a protector. As the levels progress from one to three, the German Shepherd must complete more difficult versions of each task and will be judged with more scrutiny.

Obedience training and testing is performed in an open field. Dogs are usually worked in teams of two, though each dog will take turns performing. Obedience testing in Schutzhund is rather similar to obedience testing in the American Kennel Club, with more stringent regulations. The dogs are judged on their ability to perform a battery of obedience commands, specifically heeling and staying commands, and are tested for patient and whether or not they are gunshy.

Tracking testing in Schutzhund is also similar to tracking competitions and trials found in the Unite States, only more specific. Schutzhund candidates will follow a lengthy track locating specifically and strategically placed items along the track. Once the item has been found, the dog is taught to lay on his stomach and hold the item between his forepaws, thus showing or telling his handler than the object in question has been recovered. Judging in Schutzhund tracking is based on how quickly and efficiently the German

Shepherd is capable of tracking, locating, and reporting the various items on the track.

The third and final phase of Schutzhund training and testing is based around protection. The handler will have an assistant, typically in a padded safety suit, create a mock attack on the handler. The German Shepherd is evaluated based on his willingness to protect his handler/owner, and his response to commands such as attack and release, and the efficiency and obedience with which these commands are performed.

Schutzhund training and testing, while containing many similar elements to American dog trials, training, and competition, is a much more stringent and specific method of canine evaluation. In Germany. Schutzhund testing is so respected that no dog can be bred unless it is certified in Schutzhund.

My dog was missing a patch of hair, now he has a brown, green filled blister?

My german shepherd had a bald spot on his back. Today is had a brown “blister” like bubble on it. I rubbed it and Green gooie stuff streamed out. I think his skin is peeling, because I can see raw skin in that area. He eats and drinks normally. No other health problems. No signs of puntures or bites, but I dont know what it could be? It is swollen and seems sore when you touch it. What could it be?

Well, it sounds sort of like some sort of abscess which is not getting better over time. He needs to be evaluated by the vet to determine what meds to give him. Most often it is clavimox pills, but only a doggie doctor actually looking at him can determine that. Quite frankly, a lot of these problems do not cause a lack of eating or drinking. Yes, no sign of a puncture or a bite, BUT when there is an area like you described, there was almost certainly one (some sort of wound) or there would not be that problem now. The infected area disguises that there was a wound, I think.

It could be as innocent as an insect bite of some sort or an actually ‘dirty wound’ where he scraped his hide on something or other and it got infected. Regardless of how it might have occurred, you and he need to go visit the vet and see how to get it treated. The longer you wait, the worse it will be for him and for you (as far as the cost). Please get him seen soon.

German Shepherd?

My family is thinking of getting a German Shepherd dog. We’ve had some in the past, but i’m wondering: Does the fur color change the temperament of the dog? Because we had two, they had dark brown/and black fur, and they were vicious, but not to us. Then we had a lighter tan and black one as well as some relatives, and they were friendly. And another relative of ours had a white one and it was a nice dog. So, if anyone could answer this question for me, thatd be great =D

Coat colour has nothing to do with temperament. However, breeding has a lot to do with temperament, as does training. So research your breeder carefully – and meet both parents. If you don’t like their temperament, chances are, you won’t like your puppy’s temperament!

And this holds for all dog breeds – not just GSDs.

Shepherd dogs were known as the best working dogs in 18th and 19th centuries. The shepherds in Germany employed their dogs to direct their group of sheep as well as cattle. The first priority was given on their working ability, not on their appearance. The root of these dogs in historical timeline has not yet been identified.

In the late 19th century, a movement for initiating the herding sheep method was inspired by Captain von Stephanitz. The movement also influenced his decision to establish his organization Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde where both talent and beauty were prioritized. Although von Stephanitz also put his primary emphasis on the working ability of the German Shepherd, the attempt of increasing good appearance was also found to be important.

In the historical timeline, the evolvement of German Shepherd was not always that smooth. In fact, there was a time when there was a reduction in the demand of the shepherd dogs. During that phase, the great innovator Captain von Stephanitz shaped his idea of breeding the German Shepherd in absolutely a new direction as police service dogs, where these dog were increasingly trained as police dogs in order to serve the nation. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, an increasing number of dog shows actually started influencing the breeders to take both appearance and efficiency into account.

During 1899, the idea of the contemporary German Shepherd came into existence with the continuous contribution of von Stephanitz and the formation of Verein. England discovered German Shepherds in World War I and took it back to the U.K. under the name of Alsatian. Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde regulated all the breeding in Germany during that phase. However, Germany was devastated and ruined following World War II, and the same was true with the breeding organization and policies. During that period, the credit of breeding the best German Shepherds went to North America.

However, in the late 19th century, von Stephanitz tried to find out new arenas of breeding German Shepherd dogs with the help of his extensive experience and application of knowledge. He kept his faith about many ideas used in England by that time. During 1899, von Stephanitz participated in a dog show, where he bought Horand von Grafrath. This is the time when Verein was founded and it was Horand who took his entry in the studbook as the first registered German Shepherd. Captain von Stephanitz was most impressed by the qualities of Horand.

Horand was a medium size dog with a blend of liveliness and activity. An obedient, brave, defensive and energetic type of dog was mostly adored for its mental alertness. Additionally, it had beautiful lines all over the body. These were the qualities that made the German Shepherd acquire such a universal acceptance. In modern days, German imports of German Shepherds are highly desirable to everyone for their incredible sense of smell, extraordinary obedience, sound temperament, and excellent physical structure and working efficiency.

German Shepherds – Five Items You Should Know Prior To Obtaining A Gsd

It’s official. The Second Dog is often a German Shepherd. Vice President Elect Joseph Biden will probably be accompanied by a beautiful German Shepherd (aka Alsation) when he moves to the Vice Presidential Mansion.

The male GSD puppy, who is going to be named by his grandchildren, follows within the footsteps of former White House German Shepherds including, Clipper, who was owned by John F. Kennedy and Major, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s companion.

German Shepherds are well identified for their intelligence, loyalty and versatility. They can be trained to complete virtually anything, are faithful servants of mankind and excel at a variety of diverse roles.

As a result of the strong publicity surrounding the VP’s dog, many men and women might be tempted to rush out and get a German Shepherd of their personal. But, this dog breed seriously isn’t for everyone. Though they make excellent family companions, you will find five things you must know prior to getting a GSD of your very own.

1. Discover a GSD with excellent temperament. German Shepherds aren’t hard to uncover. But be aware that numerous are bred by persons who are not trying to improve the breed. Beware the puppy mills and backyard breeders. Pet stores and newspaper classifieds are not the place to uncover a stable GSD. Instead contact a German Shepherd Rescue or locate a reputable breeder.

2. Socialize, socialize, and socialize. German Shepherds are protective by nature. This needs to become effectively tempered to prevent over-guarding, inappropriate herding behavior and uncontrolled prey instinct. Expose your GSD to selection of people, places and situations, or you may well end up with a liability on your hands.

3. Physical exercise does a GSD beneficial. German Shepherds are active, athletic dogs. They need plenty of physical exercise. Letting them run around in a fenced-in yard just isn’t enough. Be prepared to spend at least 45 minutes a day walking your GSD. Even though they do like to become close to their families, they are usually not not lap dogs.

4. Support stimulation. German Shepherds are very easily bored and can become destructive. Give them a job to complete. Keep their minds and bodies active with occupations for example Agility, Advanced Obedience, Flyball, Ring Sport, Schutzhund or Tracking. In the event you do not have the time or inclination to get involved in activities with your GSD, you will probably be better off with an additional dog breed.

5. Beware the hair. German Shepherds shed a lot. The “German Shedder” has a “double-coat.” They sport a short undercoat, with lengthy, coarse hair on the outer layer. The outside layer sheds all year lengthy while the undercoat is blown twice a year. In the event you actually don’t like to vacuum, this is not the breed for you.

Whilst German Shepherds are an amazing breed, do not forget that they are high energy dogs that were bred to work.

In case you get a GSD and expect to have an instant Rin Tin Tin, you will probably be sorely disappointed. It takes time, compassion and patience to properly raise a German Shepherd. Just before coming house, the VP’s dog will likely be trained for weeks by police-dog trainer Mark Tobin.

Research the German Shepherd breed just before you decide to get one. In the event you then conclude a GSD is proper for you, obtain a canine with a stable temperament, offer socialization, exercise and stimulation, and make friends with your vacuum.

How do I make my 6 month old German Shepherd stop jumping the fence?

I can’t electrify it due to neighbor’s kids. She has broken her leg twice & keeps dislocating her hip. I am having her spayed the end of the month but she needs to stop NOW. Someone already called animal control on her.

Here is my suggestion and it’s humane!
Suggestion number one:
Go to your local home improvement store and buy some 8 inch PVC pipe, some cable or rope, and some nails. Run the rope through the PVC pipe and place this at the top of your fence. Everytime the dog goes to get a foot hold at the top of the fence it will cause the PVC pipe to roll…backwards therefore keeping the dog off the top of the fence and in your yard. Make sure your fence is tall enough though…if it’s only 3 ft. high you will need to get a taller fence.

Suggestion number two: For a wood fence that is taller than 3ft.

Go to the local home improvement store and buy some lattace work and some small fence pickets, ohhhhhh some framing for the lattace work, and some metal bracingFrame the lattace work with the framing pieces then nail/staple this framed lattace work to the fence pickets. Bend the metal brackets to a 45 degree angle so that the framed lattace work will sit on top of the existing fence at a 45 degree angle. This method will cost more but should work too. With the angle at the top it will make it very difficult for the dog to be able to get over.

 To understand the battle, we need to begin with acknowledging that we are in a war. Battles make up smaller components of the bigger picture. By definition, battles involve combat between two persons, between factions, between armies and they consist of any type of “extended contest, struggle, or controversy” (Webster-Merriam).  As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle of some sort on a daily basis. In warfare, battles are fought on different fronts, for different reasons, and with varying degrees of intensity. The same is true in spiritual warfare. Our spiritual battles are real, even though we cannot physically see the attacker. But, we can educate ourselves on how the battles are fought and how they impact our lives on a daily basis.

 We have to ask ourselves, “Why do we even want to fight?” It will do us no good to educate ourselves on the battle if we see no reason for the fight. War is very controversial today in the physical realm. Those attitudes, beliefs and convictions will transfer over to the spiritual realm. However, in the spiritual realm, there is a battle going on regardless of our opinion. We are either victors or victims. Jesus has come and conquered. The war is already won in the heavens. Jesus told us in Matthew 28:18 that, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” We now have the privilege of having an eternal relationship with God. Many of us enter into that covenant of salvation by grace.  But the Matthew 28:18 verse is not only about our salvation; it is also about our every day victory, which adds up to victorious living in Christ. Every day victory is achieved by knowing, believing and understanding the battles that we are enduring daily, regardless if we are passive or active in the battles. Do you want all that God has for you on this earth right now, or do you want to wait until you get to heaven to receive the victory and blessings?

 How do we know that there is a spiritual realm? If we cannot see it, should we believe in it? Many believers and unbelievers today do not want to “deal” with a world we cannot see when the world we do see is hard enough to “deal” with. Before we can discuss the spiritual battle, we have to believe in the spiritual realm. We have a tendency to act like a two-year-old child who closes her eyes and places a blanket over her head, really believing that no one can see her because she cannot see them. Just because we cannot see the spiritual realm does not mean it is not there. Keith Green, a Christian songwriter, wrote, “I [Satan] used to have to sneak around. Now they just open their doors. No one’s looking for my tricks because no one believes in me anymore.” However, if we choose to ignore or not believe in the spiritual realm, we will find ourselves confused, frustrated, and quenching the peace that God has promised to each of us. The best defense is a strong offense. Just educating ourselves about the spiritual realm is half the fight and God gives us everything else we need to be victorious with the other half.

 Are you tired of feeling like you are losing the battle…even the war? When you learn the truth, you are truly set free. Most of us are not aware of the bondage around us, keeping us locked up. The sad part is that the barriers are mostly invisible. We are wrapped up in thoughts of fears, doubts and failures. But, once we learn the truth, we never go back. I used to have a large fenced in area in my back yard that held two large German shepherds. They were big dogs and as they were growing and they were very gregarious dogs and I had to build a pen in my backyard to hold these dogs.  I called a fence company and basically fenced in my whole backyard, so they had plenty of room to roam and play. The fence was about six feet in height.  One day as I am watching them romp around the yard in their pen, I realized that they could both jump the fence with little effort.  I knew they could jump the fence, but they did not know they could jump the fence.  Then, one night they jumped the fence.  I could never keep them in the pen anymore.  I would put them back in the pen and they would jump over the top. They knew their freedom was on the other side. They learned the truth. If we just could learn and know that the very fence or pen we are in, we can get out of it, then the enemy’s lies, schemes, tricks, and manipulations will no longer work because we know the truth and the truth has set us free.  There is nothing in your life right now that you cannot get out of.  No bondage, no captivity, no addiction, nothing can keep you down if you can know what the Son has done for you by the blood of Christ.  We must start by knowing the truth.  How do we then live in it?
