Can i raise a german shepherd as protecting dog?

We have a big family and want a family dog.
We aren’t gonna do any work with our gsd, just family stuff.

But, one day, if im gonna go jog in the woods or forest, and there’s a scary man behind me could my dog maybe save my life in some way?
Can it protect our house if someone wants to break in?

Absolutely! GSD are extremely protective over their family, especially children, the scary man behind you wouldn’t have a chance! Do be careful though, I have see situations where they can be “too” protective to the point of not letting friends in the house, so some socialization is important. I would definitely recommend at least basic obedience training.

Looking for a german shepherd and need a little help.?

I am stationed in Great Falls Montana and I am looking to get a german shepherd in the near future. They are my favorite dogs and I would like to surprise my wife with one but I am having trouble finding one. This question is kinda only for people in the Great Falls area but if you happen to know where I can find one regardless of where you are I would appreciate the info. By the way, I’m not looking to spend like a grand so the cheaper the better, lol.

If you WANT cheap, you’re going to GET cheap. And cheap will turn into expensive FAST. As in, poor breeding, poor genetics, poor hips, poor temperaments. The need for extensive training to correct faulty temperament, a total hip replacement by the age of 3, etc….

You have two DECENT options.

1. Find a GSD rescue in your area. They are everywhere, and most actually contain beautiful, purebred dogs. Yes, you may still end up with a problem dog, but at least you aren’t lining the pockets of a BYB and encouraging the breeding of poor specimens.

2. Find a local schutzhund club, and contact them about finding breeders they recomend. Yes, you will probably look at spending about 800-1200$ for a dog, but as I stated above, you get what you pay for. You pay 1200$ now for a sound, stable, well bred working lined dog (the only REAL GSD out there), your chances of problems in the future are extremely slim. You pay 400$ for a backyard bred dog, then you will probably run in to NUMEROUS problems in the future that will cost big time.

Need help finding cheap plane ticket for me and my dog. can anyone help?

I need to get from great falls montana to dayton ohio. Just me and my full grown german shepherd. I know i need to buy my own crate for him but thats about all i know. I need to leave ASAP. cant stress that part enough. I only have about 300$ to my name. thanks for reading.

This isn’t going to be the answer you want to hear, but it’s not going to happen. The cheapest one-way fare from Great Falls to Dayton is just under $550 plus tax, meaning that it would be close to $600 just for the plane ticket. If you need a round-trip ticket, those are well over $400 before tax, but those fares also require 21-day advance purchase, meaning you couldn’t buy that ticket and pay that fare for a flight sooner than that. (Even if you were wanting to travel with a week’s notice, for example, you’d still be looking at paying close to $700 for a ticket.)

Additionally, flying with a dog isn’t free — in addition to having the proper crate, you’d also need to pay the fee to the airline for transporting your dog as cargo. Those fees depend on the airline, and could be as much as $100 each way.

To do what you want to do, especially on such short notice, is going to take considerably more money than you say you have right now. The only ways I can think of to save money on a last-minute plane ticket, such as Priceline or Hotwire, aren’t advisable in this situation, because you don’t get to choose your airline, and you might get put onto an airline that has restrictions regarding your dog that you can’t meet. Again, this isn’t the answer you want to hear, but unless you can come up with more money than what you have, what you’re asking for just isn’t realistic.

where can i get an all black german shepherd?

accept reality your a right idiot. long haired german shepherds are always entered into shows, and im not going to be showing him, he will just be a pet.

I’ve seen many breeders that breed both black GSDs and classic GSDs, I would start by looking for breeders in your area (Responsible breeders) and look in your local shelters too, I’ve seen quite a few black shepherds in my shelter, you could also try Petfinder.com.

To Accept reality:
They might not even be showing their dog, it might just be a pet, and I really don’t see how it is SO bad that they want to get a coated GSD, in fact, the coated GSDs are closer to the original old world GSDs.

If you are buying from where you SHOULD be, the pup will already have a registered name, or will at least have a “rule” as to what names are acceptable. (Often that “rule” is that it must start with a specific letter and not be rude or demeaning.)

Do NOT buy from a puppy-miller or a greedy BYBer or the pet shops that are their main market.
The only places you should get a dog from are:
(1) A breeder who is confident enough to supply a printed & signed Guarantee stating what he/she will do if any of the genetic “unthinkables” happens – AND you consider its clauses fair on both of you. Does different colored dogs change its abilities?

I am deciding what a good color is for a german shepherd, i love silver sable. what makes me think that it makes a difference is like you never see the police using a white german shephered, but that could mean nothing. they could just use black n tan/red GSDs becuase they are the most common, or something else idk… ANYWAY i was just wandering becuase i looooooooove german shepherds but it was it to have the ability and the will to protect and herd…

color does not IN ITSELF affect working ability BUT some of the rarer colors are seldom found EXCEPT in breeding programs that focus on the color, often sacrificing the temperament and physical ability to do the work in favor of the color. Many white German Shepherds come from this type of kennel and are notorious for not being “up to snuff”compared to dogs bred for working ability

edit: it IS worth noting that white color DOES have a practical significance in herding dogs as a white herder is harder to spot in the rear of a flock of sheep and so harder for handler to direct.

moof:: the breeds you named as “white sheepdogs” are all strictly FLOCK GUARDIANS and to not “herd” the sheep thus no need to see for direction and blending in can be an asset!

i researched and discovered how bad beneful is. I didn’t know this before. should i be concerned?

I feel like such a BAD pet owner.
I didn’t know beneful dog food was horrible.

Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag… high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs Orijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. they wont be at walmarts and the like… they are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc

IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.

Large German Shepherd/Lab Mix Puppy Is Scared To Death Of Running Water/Baths! Please Help!!?

Our 5-month-old large German Shepherd/Lab Mix girl is deathly afraid of running water in the bath tub. After having to take her to the animal hospital and vet for check-ups it turns out she has bladder issues. Due to her construction “down there” she is very prone to UTI’s and even though we’ve given her antibiotics and on special dog food for the crystals that have formed…we were told to wash her down there once every day with antibacterial soap and to dry her off thoroughly. Problem is, she is terrified and it takes two of us to hold her down in the bath tub. I tried giving her one by myself today and it was a disaster! She is fine when I turn it off when I’m scrubbing her but when it goes back on, she freaks. Any ideas to get her to calm down?? Please help, thank you in advance!

I have this problem with my German Shepherd too. She weighs pretty much the same as me and HATED baths. What I do now is fill the tub before she gets in there, dump her in, make her sit and scrub her, she is fine for this. I use a cup to soak her and rinse her off so she doesn’t have to deal with the running water.

I know this isn’t fixing the problem exactly, but it worked for me. As she got more used to this I can turn the faucet on to fill the cup, and eventually she just got more comfortable with the tub and the sound of water.

Before I knew it was the running water and I had to give her a bath by myself I tied her leash so she couldn’t walk around but couldn’t leave the tub are. Now she can just hop in the tub, no leash or holding down, and lets me scrub:) I also play country music as it helps her relax.

My 6 year old 80 pound German Shepherd/Black Lab limps for a day every once in a while?

Is it hip displayshia(sp), or more likely arthritis? It doesnt slow her down at all, when she’s running around outside, and after a day, the limp goes away. Should I give her aspirin every once in awhile? She doesnt have any health problems, just the limp that comes and goes, maybe once a month, for a day or so.

Nobody can possibly tell what’s causing your dog’s limp without first examining the dog and doing an x-ray. No you can’t give your dog aspirin, not any other human pain meds. Your dog needs to see her vet for a proper diagnosis and the vet will tell you what treatment she needs to keep her pain free.
