Is my dog an American Dingo?

My dog is now 5 months old. She is half German Shepherd and we think she is half American Dingo(Carolina Dog). She has a big giant black tail and her whole body is a deep red/ginger color with a white chest and paws. She makes very strange wolf like sounds all the time. She whines a lot and she is very shy around people and barks a lot at them if she doesn’t know them. She’s skeptical around strangers, but she’s very good with small children. She is incredibly strong! She weighs around 40lbs. My other dog is half German Shepherd and Black Lab. She’s only 55lbs and she’s full grown! I can only imagine how big Lili(Dingo dog) will get when she reaches the age of 1. I read that Carolina Dogs are shy, skeptical, strong, ginger colored and very good around children and they make wolf sounds. Is she a Carolina Dog? Also…the Carolinas, i’ve heard are very rare dogs in the US. Here is a current picture of her. http://tinypic.com/r/161eac/4

She looks like she might be. She has similar ears to an American Dingo. The best way to find out is to ask your veterinarian what they think :)

How To Choose A Dog That Can Be Easily Trained

When you are trying to find a pet dog you naturally will be looking for one that will be a good companion, but you likely want one that can be trained and taught tricks. When you are working on training a dog whether it’s a Dandie Dinmont Terrier or a Telomian or a Rafeiro do Alentejo that can be trained easily, it will make your efforts easier when you are paper training it and teaching it not to be obnoxiously friendly. While a dog that is stubborn can pose some challenges in training, they can be trained by an experienced trainer. But, if you have not handled or trained many dogs, you will want to find one that is quick to learn. When looking through the want ads for this type of dog, there are a few things that you will want to look for in character, breed and age.

Personality

Even experienced trainers will tell you that a calmer dog is easier to train. True, it may be somewhat simpler to hold this type of dog’s attention, an exuberant, hyper dog can also be easy to train if you have some patience. The key is to find a dog that will bond with you. When you bond with a dog and that dog becomes your shadow because it really loves you, it will easily do anything for you. A dog that is bonded to its owner is very simple to train, regardless of whether it is excitable or peaceful, dominant or submissive.

A submissive dog will usually cause fewer problems in training than a dominant one will. To discover if your pet is submissive, look him or her in the eyes. If the dog looks away first, that indicates submission. With lapdogs and puppies, it over so that its belly is up. A submissive dog will just lie that way. A dominant dog will fight you, trying to turn over.

Breed

Your choice of breeds is huge – Chindo Dog and Pekeapoo and Utonagan and Sussex Spaniel to name a few.

Different breeds are well known for their ease of training. Labs and goldens are very popular because they are so easy to train. Also consider, the bully breeds are very intelligent animals and will love you forever. This includes American bulldogs, pit bulls and English bulldogs. Corgis, Australian shepherds, German shepherds and Dobermans are dogs that are normally quite easy to train. Terriers and notorious for being stubborn, but they can be taught and they can learn new skills quickly, especially if make it worth thier time such as giving them a treat. Mixed breed dogs can often make exceptional pets that are extremely easy to train.

Age

The old truism is that you can’t teach an old dog a new trick and most people believe that adult dogs can not be trained, but that is simply not true. Quite a large number of adult dogs learn even faster than puppies. Adult dogs often have a better ability to concentrate on learning than puppies and they are more stable. Adult dogs usually make great pets and can prove to be very easy to train which is a good case to support rescues.

When you seek a dog, look for one that resonates with you. If you find a dog that you will bond with, it will make make training a breeze.

White German Shepherd Traits

How would you compare the concept of race in humans to the concept of breeds in domestic animals?

All of us, whether white, asian, black, hispanic, etc. are members of the human species with unique appearances based on our genetic heritages.

Similarly, there are sub-populations within other species that can be grouped by common traits. For example, domestic animals have breeds. Dogs can be german shepherds, pugs, chihuahuas, etc. All of them are part of the canis domesticus species, but have great variation.

In your opinion, is it reasonable to consider the concept of human races analogous to the concept of breeds within animal species?

As far as I know, biologists do not think of race as a valid biological concept and there is an overlap all across the globe of any trait one might attempt to use to differentiate races.

For example, central Africans, southern Indians, and Native Australians all have identically dark skin; are they the same race or different? They have probably been geographically isolated from each other longer than European whites have been separated from Africans and thus have greater genetic variation from each other than Africans and Europeans do. So, are the Africans, Indians, and Australians the same race based on their skin color or distinct races based on their genetic distance, and does that make so-called Caucasians actually Africans in race or not? It is mostly total nonsense.

There are, obviously, genetic differences between people from different regions. However, the significance and causes of those differences is often unknown, and they may have resulted from genetic drift, from natural selection, or from other causes. And so biologists usually see no point in trying to separate people based on such things.

The link is to a snippet of a debate between David Suzuki, a geneticist, and a psychologist who thinks there are important biological differences between ‘races’ … if you watch, you will get a sense of what a geneticist might think of your question.

Frankly, I don’t really see the point of your question. Another geneticist, Stephen Jay Gould, has pointed out how destructive it is to limit someone’s opportunities in life based on an inappropriate and biased perception of their genetic abilities, terming this a ‘tragedy’. Is your goal to limit peoples horizons? If not, then a better way to think is to emphasize our commonalities, no?

If you google either Suzuki or Gould, I am sure you will find writings that refute whatever your point is with regards to race.

Breeds in domestic animals, on the other hand, are the result of intentional selective breeding – artificial selection – that was done to enhance desired characteristics like strength or appearance. To keep the traits breeding true, the animals generally need to be inbred in perpetuity because many of the traits result from the homozygosity of recessive alleles. I don’t think there is anything precisely like this in nature, including in any human population that I am aware of.

My dog won’t eat. He vomited white foam last night. He will still drink water, but he’s acting lethargic.?

We simply cannot afford a vet. By cannot, I mean CANNOT. Unless we just don’t eat for a month and neglect our power bill and house payment. My husband and I are college kids living paycheck to paycheck. Does anyone know what we can do?? He’s mixed, part Alaskan Malamute, part German Shepherd. I’m afraid it’s something serious…but I don’t know what I can do!
Okay, I just took him outside and he pooped, big time. I checked the feces and a lot of worms were in it. I gave him de-wormer about five days ago because I had suspected he had worms…could this just be reactions to the de-wormer doing it’s job? He’s a little more active now, but he still won’t eat. And by the way, we got him before we got into this financial bind. Things beyond our control happened, and now we’re living paycheck to paycheck.

I totally sympathize with your predicament. My husband and I are also college students who are barely making it. I work at a no-kill animal shelter and sometimes if we have the money and some one who genuinely loves their pet and wants the best for them comes in and tells us a story like yours we have them fill out a contract saying that we will cover the vet costs in return for so many volunteer hours from you. That way it is a win/win situation. Your dag gets the care he needs and the shelter has two extra hands for a while. So look into contacting your local animal shelter privately owned ones are best. Try to avoid county and city shelter because they often will not work with you. Good Luck and I hope your dog is ok.

At what age do German shepherd wolf mix ears stand up?

I have a 2 months old black puppy ( german shepherd and wolf mix ) with a few white hair on his chest and under his neck
He looks very close to german shepherds dogs
My Question is
Any one of you saw a German ShepherdWolf mixed and his ears standing?

at 8 weeks old the dog is still very young,
but as both the mother and father have upright ears (i assume)
the puppy’s ears will stand up naturally with time,
it can take up to 4+ months, so don’t be alarmed.
