German Shepherd Colors Puppy

How can you tell what coloring a German Shepherd puppy will have?

I am a bit of a GSD novice and I recently started looking at puppies. I ran into a woman selling them, it was her second litter, and when I saw the pups, they were all almost completely black. The parents are the “normal” black and tan. The sire is a golden yellow and black and the female is more of a sand and black. Only one of the puppies, a female, has lots of tan on her (well, compared to the rest of the pups…). Is there any way to tell weither the puppies will be the golden yellow, sandy, or black? The woman who owns the dogs says all german shepherd puppies are born black. I’m kinda confused.

I hope [Abe] isn’t responsible for a PD breeding programme. My original trainer, back in 1968, was a GREAT police dog trainer – but 3 years after he’d been promoted to head of Trentham Police Dog Centre he was asked to retire early so the kennel stock could be built up again. In-breeding on the RIGHT lines (if you can FIND any!) won’t cause HD. Out-crossing with the WRONG lines produces horrendous HD.

[b_carrot..]:
Few dog-breeders speak English well. So they confuse colour & pattern.
Pattern is (except for patterns not supposed to be in the GSD gene pool) caused by alleles of the Agouti Pattern gene series, of which GSDs have 3 possibilities:
• A^w = wolf sable
• a^t = tan-point
• a^ = self-colour.
Because of ignorant breeders & KCs who don’t check, there are also dogs registered as GSDs that possess:
• A^y = yellow sable – the marking seen on brownish Rough Collies and Pembroke Corgis.

The 2 colours allowed in GSDs are:
• Black – compulsory
• Tan – optional.

The gene pool also includes
• Liver – which is black degraded by the recessive pair b^ b^
• Blue – which is black degraded by the recessive pair d^ d^
• Isabella – which is black degraded by both b^ b^ & d^ d^
• Self-white – caused by 2 pairs of recessive alleles; one pair prevents black being deposited in hairs, the other prevents tan being deposited.
All you need know about those is that, the alleles being recessive, both parents can carry them without showing the effect, but if both do then about ¼ of the litter will show the banned “off-colour” effect and another ½ will be carriers.

There are modifiers which, at birth or during development, affect the pattern & the intensity of its tan.
Some reduce the area that black covers.
Some pale tan from military tan to gold, fawn, cream, or silvery-white.

There is a Spotting series which can block all pigment in spots – including in the skin, & any sense organ (eye, ear) completely surrounded by white. Such organ will probably be blind or deaf. A small chest spot, or an inconspicuous toe-spot that leaves the nail black, can be forgiven.

Looking at the parents & the grandparents gives an experienced fancier a pretty good idea of pattern & colour possibilities from a mating. An experienced fancier can predict within 48 hours of birth how MOST pups in the litter will end up.
•• Self-colour: Have NO tan at birth, not even under the tail root. Stay self-black (or self-blue, etc), although some have their legs turn gray as they age.
•• Tan-point: Born mostly black, but with tan on pasterns, cheeks, eyebrows, under the tail root. Gradually the tan spreads upwards. Most are close to their adult colour-distribution once the guard-hairs finish emerging (starts with a shiny black diamond about a third of the way down the tail at about 14 weeks). Most end up with proportionally as much black as a riding saddle covers on a horse, and are called saddle-backs. Some keep an extended saddle reaching close to the belly, and are called blanket-backs. A few keep the black crossing under the belly, and the little tan is just one tone – no shadings; they have black right up over their heels, and black pencil-lines on top of their toes; these dogs are bi-colours – the same pattern seen on Rottweilers.
• Wolf-sable: Born very similar to tan-points. However, once dry, traditional wolf-sables are a dark-honey colour except for a dark stripe over the spine. They become dark-honey-coloured almost all over within a week or so. When guard hairs emerge they have black tips but a pale base – lots of black per hair is called gray-sable, lots of pale is called gold-sable. Silver sable is sable that has undergone extreme colour-paling, and is undesirable.
One version of wolf-sable tricks breeders: Born self-black, turn bi-colour as guard hairs black almost to the base emerge; can LOOK bi-colour as adults, and are termed black-sables. Many owners wrongly call their extended-gray-sables black-sables.

Okay – that’s probably too much for you at present, so…
