German Shepherd Wolf Cross
german shepherd wolf cross
What breed or type of mutt was the best dog you’ve ever owned?
The best dog I’ve owned is a wolf-German Shepherd cross. Smartest, most loyal, most trustworthy, most beautiful dog ever. I do not condone breeding hybrids (mine was a rescue) but he’s such a lovely dog!
Previous to this, I’ve had a Pit Bull (also a wonderful family dog), a Doberman-Terrier mix (perhaps the smartest dog I’ve ever owned) and a Labrador (the most neurotic).
What has been your best dog?
My family has had a wide variety of breeds but the best breed we ever had was a mini poodle and a standard poodle.
They were so smart and so tuned to our family.

what does this mean?
“Science is now revealing that the domestic dog has evolved a genetic capability to recognize human gestures and intonations of voice, an ability not possessed by the wolf. This would suggest that crossing the two might not be such a good idea”
the phrase above is referring to the czech. wolfdog, a cross between wolves and gsd’s from an information website on german shepherd dog ancestors and relatives. i dont understand what the whole thing means, especially why it would not be a good idea to cross the two. (though i am actually against selective breeding, i was just wondering why intelligence in the dog is bad. if that is what it means..). thanks x
edit:
ladadee and helmuth a. you made me laugh haha x thanks!! and good answers both x
It’s saying that domesticated dogs have developed the ability (through evolving/evolution) to “read” us humans through our body language and tone of voice. Just like you can tell when someone is angry by seeing their arms crossed tightly across their chest, or hear their angry, shrill tone of voice.
Basically, the article is implying dogs have a greater understanding of our natures, and can recognize our emotions and react to them.
Therefore, if dogs and wolves were cross-bred, then wolves would inherit these innate abilities. The presumed trouble is if wolves gain the same capabilities they could pose a threat to humans, since they are wild, and not domesticated.
EDIT:
I’m flattered that Helmuth, a top contributer, repeated my words verbatim in his post below:
“The article is implying dogs have a greater understanding of our natures, and can recognize our emotions and react to them.”
Thanks for the validation, Helmuth.
