What coloring will my German Shepherd puppy have?

Adrian (Puppy) – http://tinypic.com/r/2z3rp1s/7

Sire and Dam – http://i52.tinypic.com/wbff61.jpg

Both German lines if that can help determine anything.
I chose him based on temperament, I’m just curios as to what he will look like when he is older.
The black on his back is already above his elbows on his front two paws and to his ankles on his back two.
Nails, Pads, Nose etc. are black obviously.
***In case anyone mentions it, I have already contacted the breeder as well as several others about the white patch on his chest. Apparently its okay but not preferred.

GSD puppies lighten as they get older, but as he is quite dark all over he will lighten until he looks like his father. His final adult colour will be achieved after about 9 months (after the first moult). Looks like a superb dog.

Will a Papillon and German Shepherd do good together?

http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww320/Anderson_033/Pets%20and%20Animals/Papillon.jpg

^ will a tiny little papillon dog go well with a big german shepherd dog?

If you have a dog and a new one will be entering or visiting your home, there are things you can do to ensure that the meeting comes off without a hitch. A new dog can mean you are bringing home a foster dog or a new puppy; someone who has a dog is moving into your house; or someone is visiting with a dog.
If you know that both dogs are very social with other dogs, the meeting should be easy. But, you may not know this, since some dogs don’t get out and mix with other dogs that much. If your dog (or the new dog) has not been spayed/neutered, the meeting may be more difficult.
If you are uncertain how one (or both) of the dogs will react, be cautious. First, the dogs will need to meet on neutral ground. Choose a place where neither dog is likely to feel territorial. Even your dog’s favorite park is not a good spot, unless it is a dog park (dogs are often used to meeting other dogs there). If you are adopting a dog from a shelter, ask the staff if they can help to introduce the dogs. If your dog is accustomed to meeting dogs at a pet supply store like PETsMART or Petco, you can ask their trainer to help with the introduction. The dogs could casually meet while you are on a shopping trip.
When the meeting occurs, have each dog on lead with a calm, relaxed adult handler. Keep the leads loose, since pulling on the leash might communicate to the dog that you are fearful or anxious about their meeting. As the dogs approach each other, watch their body language closely. The dogs may need to do a little posturing or make a little noise, but if you don’t know how to tell the difference between dogs getting to know each other and dogs who don’t like each other, have someone there who does.
If they try to play by pawing or play bowing with their legs stretched out in front of them, they may want to be best buddies. Allow them to sniff each other, and give praise for a nice greeting. If you want, you can take them for a walk together, stopping occasionally to allow them to sniff and investigate each other.
If they stiffen their bodies and stare into each other’s eyes with their hair up and their teeth bared, they probably aren’t going to become fast friends. If they lunge at each other and try to fi ght, separate them and don’t try further introductions without help from someone with experience in dog training and behavior.
If neither of the dogs is food aggressive, you can practice commands that they know and give treats as rewards. Giving treats can also serve to distract the dogs from focusing too much on each other.
If the dogs seem fine with each other, drive them home and settle in, but make sure you’ve put away your dog’s toys, bones and food bowls first, since these items may be sources of conflict. If you’re going to offer “high-value” items like Kongs or chews, it may be best to separate the dogs. Once the dogs are good friends, they may be more willing to chomp side-by-side on high-value items.
To introduce a puppy to a dog, use the same procedure as above. But, if the puppy is under four months old, both the dog and the puppy may need frequent breaks from each other. Some dogs will quickly lose patience with puppy energy. If the dog does not like the puppy, do not leave them alone together.
If you are not confident or comfortable at any point, please seek help from someone who is knowledgeable about dog behavior.

Four Guaranteed Steps To Crack German Shepherd Aggression Problems

German shepherds are handsome dog breeds, but German shepherd aggression may come up with absence of correct German shepherd training. In fact, this can be a serious problem in many canines. As early as six weeks of age, they can become aggressive since this is a critical point in time in which they meet other dogs and strangers.

German shepherd aggression problems can be attributed to a lot of things and they should not be ignored nor tolerated. Nevertheless, despite their intimidating features, German shepherds are eager to learn and can be easily trained when they are in the right hands. The sooner the training is started, the greater the chance for them to become well mannered and great family dogs.

What triggers German shepherd aggression?

Genetics and heredity are known to be contributors of German shepherd aggression as well as with other breeds of canines. German shepherd dogs have a high tendency toward hostility. However, this does not apply at all times.

Some German shepherd dogs become destructive and intense due to past traumatic experiences. They may be abused by their previous trainers while they are still young. Any undesirable treatment and bad environment may aggravate their harshness to other dogs and people.

Lack of socialization is also a contributing factor for German shepherd aggression. Being sociable by nature, these canines interact with their mothers and siblings, their littermates, during their first two months. When they are separated from their families, they tend to develop aggressive behaviors and eventually become distrustful to new animals and human beings.

German shepherd dogs believe in the pack culture. They look for someone to become their Alpha dog. Once their owners miss to establish leadership during puppyhood years, these animals may do everything as they please because they are not directed appropriately.

Certain diseases or ailments may also contribute to German shepherd aggression. When they experience sickness, it may cause them discomfort, thereby turning them into violent canines. Therefore, routine check-up with a veterinarian is recommended.

Since German shepherd aggression can be dangerous and even life-threatening, here are five guaranteed steps to stop this problem now before it’s too late:

Step one: German shepherd aggression can be avoided by German shepherd training your canine at a young age, whether through verbal commands, hand signals, or other methods. Younger German shepherd puppies are easier to train than the adult ones because they have the greater capacity to learn quickly.

Moreover, older German shepherd dogs tend to become heavier and their actions may be hard to control. Remember to treat the animal with gentleness and affection during the entire German shepherd training procedure to build their trust in you. Another thing, do not eliminate the Shepherd puppy from its litter mates until they reach the 8th week.

Step two: Become your German shepherd’s leader while he is still young. One of the best ways to prevent German shepherd aggression issues is for you to set the rules and boundaries and be consistent at all times. Start with one-word commands like sit, stay and heel, and proceed to the more difficult level as he improves.

If your German shepherd is about to German shepherd bite or is German shepherd jumping on other people, say “No” to him firmly and let him sit and stay. If he complies, praise him madly and pat him on his head. Offer him treats so that he will link rewards with obeying your commands.

Step three: Allow the German shepherd puppy to interact with other canines and people. Make him get used to a new environment. German shepherd aggressive behaviors such as German shepherd biting, German shepherd nipping, German shepherd gnawing and German shepherd barking may be the animal’s means of self-defense.

Walk the German shepherd frequently in public places and let him play with other dogs. Retain a regular feeding schedule. German shepherd obedience classes are also good venues for him to exercise his social skills.

Step four: Because German shepherd aggression may result from abusive treatment, any form of punishment such as yelling, hitting, slapping, paddling and others are discouraged. That is why trainers should have extra patience in dealing with this type of breed.

When your German shepherd displays faulty acts, saying “No” and “shhh” when he barks loudly without being violent are preferable ways to make him behave as you wish.

Eliminating German shepherd aggressive behaviors as early as possible can save both animal and human lives. Well behaved German shepherds make the owners at ease and feel safe everywhere they go. If German shepherd aggression concerns persist, consult a professional dog trainer immediately.

Cute name for a Female German Shepherd?

What do you think are good names for a female german shepherd?

Smart. Courageous. Loyal. The German Shepherd isn’t any old dog, he’s a breed with decades of service to mankind behind him, doing just about every job a dog can do. These German Shepherd names for boy and girl dogs evoke the capable spirit (and sometimes the German roots) of the breed.

Is This A Myth or a Fact?

I Got a German Shepherd Puppy and I Hate My Uncle but he did this ridiculous thing to my puppy when i wasn’t around,My Puppy started Crying So i go out and my uncle had my poor puppy by the neck skin, After he put him down he told me that The dogs who cry are Pure breed dogs my parents told me he was a pure breed dog and i believed them but i don’t Know if this MYTH is real or if i should go to the Vetenarian to ask How do i know if he is a pure breed or a false,And Is this myth real or not somebody please tell me i love my dog and hate my uncle, Even if he isn’t a pure breed I’ll Still Keep Him I’ve been through a lot with him But my uncle thinks he’s always right even His Brother Believes him and he’s 17 I read about GSD’S that can have problem’s with Their skin so could’ve that made my Puppy Cry?Thank You For Your Answer’s Your Information Is Helpful.

That does not make any sense at all. Any dog will cry out when you pick them up like that! There really isn’t a sure way to tell if a dog is a purebred (those DNA tests are crap) but doing it like that does nothing but hurt the dog. Tell your uncle that he needs to be more sensitive about your dog. You would love him even if he wasn’t purebred. :]

The Dog Dominance Myth

Is dominance in dogs just a few simple positions and postures….or is it something that runs deeper, something that is not visible to the human eye. For many years now we have heard of training techniques that involve the owner to act like a dominant dog. This involves the person doing things like eating first, walking with your dog beside you or behind you, instead of pulling in front of you, not letting him sleep on high positions in the house like the bed or the sofa and so on.

Although these techniques can help to create a good relationship with your dog, especially when used by novice owners, they don’t always work. From my experiences with not only training dogs but with observing my own dogs I have seen inconsistencies in this theory. I have found that in many instances that all these so called dominant positions do not mean a thing and more importantly they don’t work all the time.

For example my 4 year old Belgian Malinoi is quite a dominant female and for the past 3.5 years she has only been submissive to one older pig hunting female on my yard. Any other female I bring onto my yard, no matter what dominant positions they take. Nor how big they are, she will want to dominate them and if I allowed it she would fly into them and attack them with out hesitation. The same goes if I keep these females on my yard for many years, there will always be a struggle for dominance between her and the other female. This is regardless of what dominant behaviour the introduced female will try.

About 6 months ago something interesting happened on my yard. This Malinoi submitted to a 18month old Bulldog female I have raised on my yard. This Malinoi has dominated the Bulldog female for her entire life. Now this Bulldog female does the same dominant pose as all the other females have tried. But…for some reason it worked for her and the Malinoi female submitted…

Another instance that I can think of is when a friend of mine came done from Sydney to visit. I had my dog training class and at the end I needed one of my new clients to fill out some forms. This client, a husband and wife, had a 12month old German Shepherd female that they had absolutely no control over. When filling out the forms the husband, a large guy, handed control of the dog over to his wife who is a much smaller person. I asked my friend who has owned dogs for many years to assist her if she had trouble with the dog.

It was only about one minute before this dog started jumping on the lady. My friend correctly instructed the lady to check the dog with the lead. She did it correctly but the dog continued to jump on her. Seeing this, my friend took control of the leash and checked the dog. To his amazement and hers, this crazy out of control female dropped to the floor and looked up at my friend attentively. She had submitted with the exact same method that did not work for the lady…

While doing house calls for people with problem dogs. All too often the people have commented how calm and well behaved their dog is around me. I hear things like, “I can’t believe it, he is normally jumping up on whoever comes in the door.” Or he isn’t doing it now for some reason.” How can this be if all I have done is walked into their house or yard?

I believe there is something that dogs can see or feel that makes them submit to another animal or obey a human. And all these so called dominant positions are secondary to this “VIBE” someone or some dog gives off. Why else would my Malinoi female submit to a younger female that she has been doing dominant positions to all her life and never submitted to other females that would do exactly the same? Why did the female shepherd submit to my friend and not to its owner when he used exactly the same technique as the owner did? Why do peoples out of control dogs act differently when I enter the house?

Relating this “VIBE” back to dog training, I think the “VIBE” can also be called “respect.” A dog is not going to listen to you if it doesn’t have respect for you. Now to make it clear. I believe that not letting your dog sleep on your bed will create a degree of respect. And feeding your dog the correct way will go towards your dog respecting you. Making your dog walk beside you and not in front will also add to the respect your dog has for you. So all these things will go into the respect bank account and effect the relationship you have with your dog. But what I also want to make clear is that if your dog has the utmost respect for you, or you have the “VIBE,” you can let your dog drag you on the leash, or feed it in anyway you like, or let it sleep on the bed and it will still be obedient to you. Because like I said at the start, all these dominant positions/ techniques are only secondary to the “VIBE” you give off.

German Shepherd Skin Problems

german shepherd skin problems
My German Shepherd Cries when she potties.?

I have been taking her to the Vet now for this for about 6 months. I believe this started when she developed an allergy to red dye in her food and was continually chewing at her skin. Therefore injesting fur which made having a bowel movement painful. I have changed her food and her skin is very healthy. However she still screams when deficating. We have had her on numerous antibiotics which seem to work at the time but once she is finished with them we are back to the same problem. The vet says there really isn’t anything we can do which breaks my heart. I couldn’t stand to put her down. She is very frisky, loving and playful all of the time, even after this seemingly painful experience. What can I do to help her?

For pete’s sake, CHANGE VETS! She obviously has some anus problems. All those antibiotics could be part of the problem….they are known to destroy normal bacteria in the bowel as well as the abnormal. There’s a good possibility that her digestive system isn’t working properly because of it, resulting in hard stools that have left her anus sore. Monitor her fluid intake…..encourage more drinking by adding a few drops of chicken or beef broth to her water. Give her a bit of canned pumpkin once a day with her regular dog food. If you are giving her dry dog food, moisten it with chicken or beef broth to create softer stools. Give her a fish oil capsule daily. Isn’t anything you can do, my hind foot!!! SEE ANOTHER VET!

german shepherd skin problems
Is it normal that there is no coat on a small area of my German Shepherd dog after he had a skin problem?

How long does it take for coat to return to normal after a skin problem of my german shepherd dog

Yes, sometimes the skin problem can affect the root of the hair and cause the hair not to grow back. And sometimes it will just take a while. Patience will let you know….

I need help with my German shepherd / husky mix bread dog.?

I have German shephers/Husky mix bread dog,we name him (( Lucky )) he is 3 month now, he is cute but naughty dog, I really dont know how to deal with him and train him as which bread? he love kids he likes to play all the time with them.
I live in Kuwait and we are evry hot country so what shell I do in summer? should I put air conditioner for him in that time?
please giude me any one.

Train him as any other dog, there are different areas of training like hearding guarding ect but for an overall general well behaved dog all of the basic training is the only thing that is needed.
As for the air conditioner, keep plenty of room temp water out for him (usually not more then 70 F) If he seems to be over heating then i would suggest doing so. Your best bet is to discuss it with your vet before the very hot weather hits your area.
If you have any other questions feel free to email me and ill try and help.

german shepherd male names
What’s a good name for a male German Shepherd?

I’m thinking of getting a German Shepherd puppy as our local kennel has an upcoming litter. It would be a male so just for fun I’m thinking about some good Shepherd names. Any suggestions?

I have been trying to push the name Achillo on here but nobody seems to like it. He was a celebrated, historic spanish war dog in the 1500’s.

But another name I liked was Paper. It comes from a story I heard on tv about 10 years ago. Paper was a heroic German Shepherd war dog in the Vietnam War. I can’t recall the details of his heroic duties though. There are many heroic german shepherd war dogs so if you don’t care for the name Paper then look up others on uswardogs.org. It would be honorable to name your dog after another hero.

male German Shepherd puppy name!?

okay im getting a male german shepherd pupppy today and me and my friend are trying to decide on his name. we have two names picked out but we dont know which one. lol, which one do you guys like better?

either…

Cheif or Ruger

please help! :)
i named him Rueger:)

Chief is good. A nice strong name, however there is the fact that Chief is a popular name for large male dogs.

I like Ruger the best because you don’t hear Ruger that often.

My GSD’s name is Braskius. But I call him Brasky. It’s a very different name and he singles it out really well when he hears it.

Two other names I love for male GSDs are Zico and Zandor.

Do you know any cool but cute names for a male German Shepherd mix?

Okay, please don’t start saying, “this is YOUR dog, YOUR option” stuff. This is a dog for my story, so it’s not a real dog.
Preferably names for a male German Shepherd mix. I want some cool names, cute, but different. Not something ordinary like Cody or Max.

I fostered a GSD name Zeus. It was a nice tough big dog name.

How to choose the best German Shepherd Dog pup in the litter

How to choose the best German Shepherd Dog puppy in the litter.

by Dennis Fisher.

If you are interested in getting a dog that will turn out to be a show winner and you have the opportunity of choosing the most promising animal from the entire litter, here are important points to look for.

It is of course not easy to choose the best pup in the litter because pups do change – sometimes quite dramatically.   There have been occasions where the runt of the litter has turned out to be far better than his more promising littermates.  But as a rule, when one has the opportunity of examining the entire litter at eight weeks, it is generally possible to choose the best – certainly the best pup at that stage of growth.  Eight weeks is a probably the best time to make the choice.

After taking your time to examine all the pups in the litter carefully, make sure that the forelegs of the pup that takes your  fancy are straight and sturdy.  See that the pup has good bone which is indicated by thick “knuckle”.   If it is a male you are looking for, size and masculinity is important.  Although one must be aware that in recent years over-size in  males is a problem that has become more common  in the breed.  It is a fault and is something to be guarded against.

The pup should have a good strong  and clearly masculine head.  This is also of importance because there is a   tendency in recent years  for heads in males to be finer and less noble than  one would like.

The movement of the pup can be reasonably well  assessed even at this tender age of eight weeks. The well-balanced pup will appear to move with more harmony and more easily than the others in the litter.

Look for a pup with a high wither.  This is fairly easy to access,  but try and make sure that the high wither is not at the expense of a good shoulder formation.  This is rather difficult because excellent shoulder formation is not as common as one would wish.  The high wither that is such an attractive feature of the modern Shepherd is one of the reasons for this.    The shoulder should be well laid back with good length of upper arm.  Even at this early it is possible to see whether or not the pup has a good shoulder.  Of course a good shoulder is not merely an aesthetic requirement, it is essential for good forward reach and sound movement when the pup grows into a mature dog.

If you have to choose between a  pup that is slightly long in body length and one that is somewhat shorter in body length, if other factors are equal, give preference to the slightly shorter pup.  Sometimes body length is accompanied by weakness in back and will affect movement severely when the pup matures.

It goes without saying  that you should have seen both parents before having to make a decision and have been aware of any deficiencies present in addition to virtues. Examine, if possible, other animals they have produced.

It will also be of great benefit if you have background knowledge of the bloodlines.

The pup should have strong hindquarters with broad thighs, long stifles and good hocks. The length of stifle is also easily recognizable at the age of eight weeks. But this will change.  When you select a pup with a well angulated, long stifle, make a point of examining the away movement to see if the hocks are fairly firm.  Once cannot expect hocks to be too firm at this early age, but you don’t want a pup that has wobbly hocks.

The coat should be full but definitely not long.  A long coat is a serious fault in the show ring.  It is quite easy to detect a long coat in a pup because the pup show signs of a collie type coat and there will be tufts of fur coming from the ears.

Unless there are definite signs of color paling, which is a definite fault, color is not supposed to be of primary importance in the show ring.  However, there is no doubt that a well-pigmented animal is always  far more glamorous in the show ring and attracts more attention.

With  regard to ears, this is usually a matter about which you need not concern yourself if both parents have good ear carriage.  The ears do not become fully erect until the dogs finishes teething and six months, although many pups do get their  ears up much earlier. But if the ears are very long and inclined to be thick there might be a danger of soft ears.  Here again it is important to know the bloodlines of the parents.

If the pup has a good head, with a deep muzzle, not a long collie type head, the chances are good  that the bite will be good and the pup will have the correct scissors  bite when he matures.  Many pups are over-shot when they are young, which means that the upper teeth protrude over the lower teeth.  If this is only slight it is not very serious and this fault might be corrected as the pup matures.  If however, it is marked there is a distinct danger that it might not change.   A scissor bite is very important and if there is a definite gap of more than 2mm. between the upper and lower teeth the dog will be heavily penalized in the show ring.

What cannot  be predicted with any degree of accuracy at this early stage,  is whether the pup will grow up to have full dentition – a full complement of teeth.  Quite often, when the pup matures and the teething process is over, the owner is very upset to find that an otherwise promising animal has a missing tooth.  This may seem a very minor fault – and in a family pet it is certainly of no real consequence – but in the show ring it is viewed in a serious light as it is regarded as a genetic fault.

Even though the breeder is as anxious as you are to have your pup do well in the show ring, there is of course  no guarantee that your pup  is going to do well, as careful as you have been in your selection.   Bear in mind that the showing of dogs, particularly German Shepherds, in the highly competitive environment that exists today, is very demanding and often very frustrating.   Your dog may be a good specimen, but whether he becomes a show winner is entirely dependent on the quality of the competition!

If you do happen to win, enjoy your triumph with good grace. Entering Dog Shows should always be regarded as a sport. Be sportsmanlike.  Sometimes you win.  Sometimes you lose.  If you do happen be beaten by what the Judge considers to be a superior animal, be a gracious loser.

Because the competition is so intense and the standard of dogs being exhibited is improving all the time,  if you hope to do well at shows it is important to select a pup from the best show winning bloodlines.   Visit the following website for a great deal of useful information about present-day top-winning Shepherds and famous German Shepherds of the past:  http://www.freedogadvice.com

Male German Shepherd Name?

I recently asked for opinions on female German Shepherd names but we have decided to get a male now. The puppies were born 3 days ago and we went to go see them & their parents last night…. Their father Dallas is beyond HUGE and the breeder is very confident that the male pups will be every bit as big as him and thats what we want is a huge guard dog that is scary looking but very lovable (except to unwanted strangers in the house lol)

So…here is the list of names we are deciding between:

Diesel
Radar
Zeus
Nitro
Capone
Roscoe –(this is also actually the name of the town the pups live in now…its 2hrs away from us though and not very well known.)

Thanks in advance!! :)

Roscoe is a great name, its different, but as a good sound to it. All the others are fairly common.
If you want a touch name, look at names from german guns/tanks etc,
such as Rugar or Mauser. You can often invent names from unusual sources if you use your imagination

Buying Black German Shepherd Puppies? Read This!

Before you hop into that pet shop or visit the local breeder in hopes of bringing home those precious black German Shepherd puppies, you might first want to read more about what to take notice of when you’re looking for that perfect dog.

The Real Deal with Puppy Mills

The reason why you should first arm yourself before buying black German Shepherd puppies is because of puppy mills. If you haven’t heard of them, puppy mills are pet shops or even people who breed dogs for the sole purpose of selling them and the reason why they should be avoided, is because they seldom care about the puppies’ welfare. Most of the time, dogs bought from Puppy Mills are sickly or are not cared for. There are also cases where the puppies come home with a disease with them, and chances of survival are very slim.

Red Flags Anyone?

The best way to avoid buying from puppy mills is to purchase a puppy from a credible, local club accredited breeder. If that option isn’t available, we’ve prepared a list of red flags that you could look out for. If your chosen “breeder” has more than three of these red flags, then we suggest that you should run for your life and for you money.

Run like hell if:

1. The kennels are dirty and do not look sanitary enough for pet’s welfare
2. Your breeder does not look as if he has taken care of his dogs
3. You do not feel any connection between the breeder and his pets
4. The breeder does not offer any contract or guarantee of some sort
5. The breeder avoids some of your questions
6. The breeder could not provide information about the sire and the dam
7. The breeder does not seem interested in their pet’s welfare

A responsible and credible breeder would be seen by the words he speak. If he really knows what he’s talking about, then there’d be no problem answering questions. All in all, follow the rule of thumb when looking for a breeder: If you don’t feel comfortable, move on to the next!
