My male German Shepherd has a large swollen mass right on his left elbow what can it be?

Does he lay on cement or hard ground alot? It may be a callus. Sometimes they become fluid filled or red and tender. You don’t say how old he is either, sometimes this comes with age. If it isn’t bothering him or getting worse you can wait until your next vet visit to
have them look at it.

I work with lots of dogs and this is very common and usually not a problem. Like I said, if you notice him getting uncomfortable or it gets worse get him to a vet immediately.

Is this a German shepherd/Doberman mix?

Our dog is about a year old and we adopted her from an animal shelter. We were told that she was a German shepherd/doberman mix. She is about a year old right now and weighs about 50 lbs. I just wanted opinions on whether or not she looks like a shepherd/doberman mix.

I had the same mix when I was younger, but my girl was a lighter color & looked more shepherd than doberman, while I personally believe your dog looks the opposite. Same kind of face & body structure as my dog had.
The thing about mixes is that no 2 ever look totally alike.

I’m looking around to maybe get a German Shepherd puppy. I want a good mixture of a working dog and a show dog. Trying to find a breeder listing on a search engine is like trying to seperate salt from sugar.

Only shoddy breeders mix show and working lines. Mixing the 2 lines will get you a dog that can’t win a show nor be a decent working dog. There are working line dogs who are V rated, but there aren’t any show line dogs who can win the BSP. My biased advice? The only German Shepherd is a working line German Shepherd…they can be “pretty” too. But I’d rather buy a 100% pure show line dog than buy a dog from a breeder who mixes lines because anybody who does that is the next best thing to a backyard breeder.

We are not bothered which sex the pup is as long as it has been KC registered and had all appropriate vaccinations needed for age etc. We live in Scotland, UK so don’t want to travel outside Scotland.

Current preclinical models can be poorly predictive of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicology (ADMET) in man. This inability to translate animal results to man is driven by profound interspecies differences in the levels and functions of proteins involved in ADMET, and is a major reason for development failure in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The transADMET programme offers an improved preclinical means of predicting human ADMET response. In each model, key genes have been knocked out or replaced with their human counterparts — improving the pharmacokinetic and safety assessment of drug candidates by yielding research results that are more predictive of man.

My family owns a 1 1/2 year old female black lab. We are interested in adopted a german shepherd also. Would a male or female be better for our family? Which gender is better with kids/teenagers? What age range should we look into? Thanks!

I am not saying i am a Professional or anything im young but my german shepherd isn’t good with cats it isn’t the dog it’s if you train the dog from a puppy to be gentle with cats unless they get brought up disliking cats. If you want a dog that is older make sure that it is good with cats unless he won’t be tamed as he has been brought up with ought cats it is rare he will be friendly with them, as i say i pref are males towards females as they can be a bit more protective and can go mad at strangers.
Advice if your teens bring in allot of different friends don’t get one brought up as either a guard dog or there mother/father a guard dog they learn from the parents and are extremely protective over the most affectionate towards them.

i bought a dog from a friend’s friend cuz there are no breeders where i live, and the dude said it was a german shepherd…i know i should ave made sure but i was kinda excited……….now he doesnt look so much lyk a german shepherd any more…….hes black and tan and his patterns are just lyk other gsds ive seen…..but his legs are quite long and not as stubby as a gsd’s…..and his snout is kinda long too…..and only one of his ears stand….hes 8 weeks old…what breed is he??…HELP

As you said – the time to worry was BEFORE you accepted the pup.

Without full registration papers he cannot be regarded as a genuine GSD – he can get registration as a dog for obedience competition, but not as a GSD for breeding, showing, breed surveying.

Indeed, most pooches registered by the KCs in Britain, Canada, the USofA are not actually GSDs – they are the exaggerations we sneeringly call AlsatiOns, German Crouchers, NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs, Prick-Eared Bassets, or Titanic Tail-Tuckers, depending on which exaggerations are most prominent. Their long-ago ancestors were quality GSDs, but breeders since then have ignored the International Standard of the GSD: http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc It will tell you proper proportions for head, body, legs. Being a herding breed, the GSD is SUPPOSED to be leggy, although not as leggy as Coyotes.

Expect his ears to go up & down a few times before becoming permanent at 7-9 months old. Unless a major injury happens to it, an ear that has ever been up under its own power (without assistance from gravity or a head-wind) will eventually come up again. But while the pup is teething an ear can drop, fold forward, or lean against the other ear as though clothes-pegged together.

The longest I’ve had to wait for a bit.ch to have both ears up at the same time was 9 months. (One of her pet sons is on the Home page of the group I list next.)
It usually happens a couple of months earlier.
But do give your pup a gnaw bone (eg, as an ox-tail or part of a sheep-spine) last thing every night. It not only gives him something to do while you’re boringly asleep, the gnawing also:- exercises the facial muscles that control the ears, cleans the teeth, dislodges deciduous teeth, helps permanent teeth break through the gum; and any bits swallowed have the perfect calcium : phosphorous ratio.

• I hope you are booked-in to a training class that starts when he becomes 18-22 months old. The instructor coaches YOU to improve your technique, and at the same time your pup learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.

German Shepherd coat color genetics…breeding a black sable to a black and tan?

I was wondering if you breed a black sable german shepherd that carries the saddle pattern (aw + as) to a black and tan (as + as) what could the outcomes be? I know that 50% would be sable, and 50% would be black and tan, but I was told that gold sable would be a possibility. If the mom is a black sable, I am curious how gold sable is possible.

Also, do heterozygous sable puppies look different from homozygous sable puppies? I was told they do.

I am not a breeder, just curious about genetics.

You are only looking at one gene loci( the Agoutis series). Even just at this one loci the alleles combine to produce various effects. And black sable vs gold sable is just the intensity of black, and that can be effected by other gene alleles.

Which dog is better for police work?

I my self plan on becoming a K9 officer for the Oregon state police, and would like some input on which breed would be better for a Field dog. A German shepherd, Doberman, Boxer, Lab, Rottweiler, or a Belgian Shepherd (malinois) I would like to get some variety into the police world, and if you have other suggestions of breeds, they would be greatly appreciated

Wanting to get some variety into the police world huh?? Depending what you plan to use your dog for will limit the breeds available. If seizing narcotics or finding bombs are your thing, just about any breed will do, so long as it goes nuts over toys. Toys are the main training tool for these dogs. If you plan to catch the bad guys, a chihuahua won’t do it for you. You can ‘want’ a certain breed so that you can have something different, but if a suitable dog isn’t there, it isn’t there. You could search for months to find a boxer that ‘might’ work, but I doubt that any police administration would go to such great lengths for an ‘unproven’ breed. The more likely scenario would be that once you get into your unit, they will contact the vendor they use and have a dog shipped in for you. What you get, is what you get. Sorry to disappoint you.
I have a retired Malinois that I’ve worked for 8 years, and a ‘new’ 18 month old Malinois who is currently in training. Getting 2 Mals wasn’t necessarily the plan, it’s what the vendor had at the time when he came in. We tested several GSD’s, and Dutch Shepherds and Mals before deciding on the dog I currently have. Someone here said the Mals don’t have an ‘off’ switch, not true. Both of mine know when they are home and ‘click off’. They both are very high drive, but know when they are off duty. When looking for a suitable K9, take into account the part of the country you’ll be working in. If you have cold winters, Dobermans and Boxers and Rotti’s are out because they don’t have the necessary undercoat to be effective for long periods of time in cold weather and Labs aren’t much good for apprehension work. I’ve just whittled your list to German Shepherds, and the Belgain Malinois which are strangely enough the 2 most popular breeds used in police work today. They are agile enough to perform the job, and they just love doing it!!
