Is this German Shepherd puppy purebred?

His name is Rocco, he is now 4.5 months old. I saw his mother and she is AKC registered. I did not see the father but the seller said he was purebred as well. I love him the same whether he’s purebred or mixed, but I just really want to know. All of his nails are all black, and the inside of his mouth is all the same color. Is there anything specific I should look for? Also, he had hookworms and we just finished his medicine, that is why the vet said his ears haven’t gone up yet. Below I attached a few pictures of Rocco. Please give me an honest answer, don’t joke around. Thank you for the help.

http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/ww39/mber237/Rocco/100_0620.jpg

its that picture and the ones after it.

Looks to be. Doesn’t look to be the best bred dog but definately purebred and definately pet quality. Not all shepherds ears stand up by the way.

If your dog is registered you can look up his father as well through the AKC.

Your breeder should have been able to provide you with his family history up through atleast his grandparents and perhaps his great grandparents.

but if you got this dog from a back yard breeder than well you probably just got a poorly bred dog (I know how that goes, I made the mistake of going through a BYB) and the breeder has no real record of his line.

Can someone help me with an akc name for a female german shepherd?

Her call name is Misa, which is Japanese for beautiful sand, I can’t think of anything good that I love for her akc name. She is a Sable dog and of course since I am showing her I need to have the kennel’s name in hers, the kennel name that needs to be in there is Peakes Brook. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Why not just Peakes Brook Beautiful Sand? Her call name could still be Misa. Kind of a play on the words.

German Shepherds – Some of the Most Loyal Canine Friends

We live in a world where making friends has become a truly difficult thing and keeping one’s friends is not exactly an easy task to accomplish. People surround us all the time and, still, most of us feel alone. Friendship is one of the most beautiful things that we have and, if we are too busy to make friends or to keep contact with our old ones, we can always have a man’s best friend. Dogs are always there when we need companionship and they will never stop being our best friends.

The German Shepherd dog has existed as a distinct breed for ninety years and its ancestors were sheepherding and farming dogs from Germany. The German Shepherd is a middle-sized dog, usually weighing 75-95 pounds. Nowadays, the German Shepherds represent an appreciated breed due to their courage, loyalty and numerous abilities. However, if you consider this breed of dog for your family, you should be aware of the fact that they need love, attention and guidance.

German Shepherds represent one of the most popular and cherished breeds of dogs, due to the fact that they are intelligent, agile and very active. German Shepherds are also large, strong and very faithful. Although most people know that German Shepherds are black and tan, few are aware of the fact that these dogs come in a variety of colors and patterns, such as black and red, black and brown, black and silver, black and cream and blue and ten. These dogs represent ideal companions, watchdogs and guardians.

Before buying your puppy, it is important to do some research concerning puppy breeders. The most important thing is to buy a healthy puppy, from a breeder who is interested in finding a proper home for the puppy and who can provide you certification about its parents. Take a very good look at the puppy before buying it. Make sure it has a proper weight, it is clean and it does not smell, and that it appears to be friendly and playful. Another important thing is to test the puppy, see if it suffers from hip, and elbow dysplasia, which is a very common disease.

If you are considering purchasing a German Shepherd puppy, you should not think twice about it. German Shepherd puppies are very sociable and they need your attention and patience. They are excellent family dogs because they are friendly to all members of the household.

Of course, it does happen most of the times for them to have a favorite person. German Shepherd puppies will begin to be aware of their family after five or six months of age. Raising a puppy with young children will be an effort for the parents, but one that is worth making. The German Shepherd puppies will grow side by side with your children and become their best friends.

The German Shepherd puppy will bond with your family and will become a loyal friend. German Shepherd puppies have a good nature, although they need firm training. The training of your puppy is of utmost importance and it will last a lifetime.

Choosing a puppy requires a lot of research, time and effort, but few dogs have the qualities of a German Shepherd. If you choose such a dog, you can be certain that you will not regret your choice. They make one of the best picks from among the friendly canine beings.

akc german shepherd names
AKC name for German Shepherd?

I have a German shepherd named Tucker. He was named after the Currituck lighthouse. I can’t seem to come up with an akc name for him. His mother’s name was Ritter’s Zoie and his fathers name was Ritter’s Rowdy. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
But my last name is not Ritter
My las t name is Fields

how about Fields’s Tucker?
alternatively -Field’s Currit or Field’s Currituck?

hope this helps

btw, why didn’t you explain about ritter being to do with the last name before?

The 7 Akc Dog Groups Explained

Do you want a new dog? Have you really thought about it? Why are you thinking about adding a new dog companion to your family in the first place? Do you have any idea what you’re looking for in a new dog companion? What are you real needs in a dog? And your wants? There are many things to consider first before bringing home that new bundle of joy.

It is very important, first, to match your new dogs overall personality, exercise requirements and needs to you and your family as closely as possible. With luck you’re choosing an animal that is likely to be with you for 10 years or longer so put forth a little research time in the beginning and you’ll be rewarded for your efforts for years to come.

Were you aware that the common dog comes in more than 400 different breed types world wide? There is much more variation among our friend the family dog than in any other species of mammal known today. The selection of available dog types to choose from is truly amazing. They come in more sizes, shapes, colors, coat types, abilities and personalities than you could shake a bone at.

Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to find the right dog breed to fit your personality as well as your current lifestyle. Dogs, just like people, have many different jobs and most were bred for very specific activities. This is probably one of the most important things you need to know before you get the wrong dog for you. Example: If you are a couch potato you don’t want to bring home a dog breed with extreme energy – and a need to express that – or if you are a triathlete, you don’t want to bring home a new exercise partner with tremendously low exercise requirements.

Here I will list each of the major AKC dog groups, briefly describe their overall purpose and what the dogs were originally bred to do, list many of the jobs dogs in each particular group currently perform, as well listing as a few members of each group.

- The Herding Group

Bred for stamina, these super intelligent herding dog breeds work with their owners all day long out in the fields moving livestock. Overall, these energetic, intelligent herding dog breeds make excellent pets and work extremely well with different kinds of training such as agility, flyball, Schutzhund, search and rescue and obedience. Keep in mind, since these dogs were bred to do a particular job (herding), they do better when they have lots of exercise.

A few members of the AKC herding group are the German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie and Bouvier des Flandres.

- The Working Group

The dogs of the working group were bred to help man in many various jobs – from pulling sleds, guarding a home or tracking, to pulling carts, water rescues, and more. These particular dog breeds have been bred for several generations for very definite purposes and they need jobs to fill their days. They have very active minds, and are very trainable and willing to work – it is also true that these working dog breeds also require a lot of training.

Overall, the larger size, power and strength of many of the members of this group may make them unsuitable for most families, however they thrive with the right companions. Remember, since most were bred to work, they do best with lots of exercise and a specific task to do.

A few members of the AKC working group are the Boxer, Alaskan Malamute, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, and Rottweiler.

- The Hound Group

The members of the AKC hound group were bred to help man while hunting. Divided into 2 separate groups, the hounds track their prey using their wonderful senses of sight (called sight hounds) or smell (called scent hounds). The hound dog group has some of the oldest dog breeds known to man today.

Many of these dogs are quite vocal based on their hunting background so it would be a good idea to hear their vocalizations before you decide to get a hound of your own. Also, it is also a good idea to keep these dogs on a leash at all times since they can easily be led by their nose, or eyes, into situations that may get them into trouble.

A few members of the AKC hound group are the Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Greyhound and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

- The Terrier Group

The fiesty and energetic terrier group dog breed members were bred to hunt vermin both above and below ground and are often described as the “pest controllers” of the dog world. Typically these tenacious little dogs have little to no tolerance for any small fast moving animals, the postman, other dogs, etc. They are well known for their tenacious, fiesty and independent nature.

Terriers can make great pets in the right home but need a determined owner who matches their dogs’ spirited personality.

A few members of the AKC terrier group are the Airedale Terrier, Bull Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier.

- The Toy Group

The toy group dog breeds were developed simply to be our companions. Their main job is to make their owners happy. The only things the members of this dog group have in common really is their petit size. The toy dogs are also called “lap dogs” sometimes because this is where many of these toy breeds prefer to stay, in their masters lap.

It is very true that the name “toy” is very misleading. Many of the toy dogs are as tough as nails. Toy dogs are especially popular with people that live in apartments or people without a lot of living space.

A few members of the AKC toy group are the Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Pug, Yorkshire Terrier and the Havanese.

- Non-sporting Group

The different purebred dog breeds in the non-sporting group are a wide collection of dogs in all different types of shapes, sizes, coat types, jobs types, personalities and overall appearances. Many people call this the AKC “catch-all” dog group. The diverse membership of the non-sporting group contains a little bit of everything – big dogs, little dogs, hairy dogs, bald dog breeds and some of the finest companion dogs you might possibly ever own.

A few members of the AKC non-sporting group are the Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, Dalmatian, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, and Keeshond.

- The Sporting Group

Well known for their incredible instincts in both the water and woods, many of the members of this AKC sporting dog group continue to actively participate in hunting and other field trials today, actively retrieving and hunting feathered or furred game for their masters. The sporting dog breeds are well known also for their easy going temperaments.

Included in this group you’ll find the pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. Keep in mind that the sporting dogs do need regular exercise, frequently.

A few members of the AKC sporting group are the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer and the Cocker Spaniel.

- Miscellaneous Dog Group

The many different dog breeds included in the AKC Miscellaneous Group are awaiting final breed recognition by the AKC. All dog breeds that are in this group can compete and earn titles in AKC Obedience, Tracking and Agility events.

Many of these dog breeds are ones that you may not see everyday but can make great pets in the right homes. Research each of these breeds one by one since they have different working backgrounds such as hunting, herding or guarding.

As of the writing of this article, the current members of the AKC Miscellaneous Group are the Pyrenean Shepherd, Beauceron, Redbone Coonhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Norwegian Buhund and the Swedish Vallhund.

If you’re like most people you probably have many unanswered questions about dogs in general. Hopefully armed with the information above you will have a better idea of what various dog breeds were originally bred to do and will better understand whether or not they will fit your needs. Finding the right dog breed for you is truly a very important process. The best way to do that is when armed with the knowledge to make a decision based totally on fact, not fiction or hear say.

Tricks on how to train your German Shepherd Dog

Tips to be able to train your German Shepherd Dog

1.Function as the alpha dog

German shepherds are typically dominating dogs and therefore want to be the dominant dog of their pack. Which means the minute your take your German shepherd homeas a puppy, you have to ensure that you are seen as being the alpha dog, you need to be firm and constant with rules like, whether they are allowed on the sofa.

If your dog understands you’re the dominant figure, when doing your German shepherd dog training they’re going to actively strive to make you happy by being well behaved and obeying your instructions.

With you and the German shepherd comprehending the rules of your relationship, it will allow you to bond faster and more deeply.

2.Use your voice

Though this may seem really apparent, there are particular techniques you need to use. When German shepherd dog training use a firm and deep voice for instructions changing to a softer voice when rewarding and treating them. The deep voice will give you more authority and as a consequence prevent your dog from rebelling against your orders.

However, utilizing a softer voice when rewarding and treating them enables your dog to know that they are not being ordered and therefore can relax.

3.Use simple commands

Employing monosyllabic words while you are commanding your German shepherd will enable the dog to obviously know what you’re asking them to do. Your German shepherd dog training will go really smoothly if you allow your dogto master short words like ’sit’, ’stop’, ‘yes’ and ‘no’, as opposed to bombarding them with numerous words.

Confusing your dog with numerous words is only going to infuriate both you and them as they will not be able to follow out your command correctly.

4.Consistency
You’ll want to make sure that you are constant when completing your German shepherd dog training. German shepherds, as a breed, are very desperate to please and for that reason by continuing to keep on top of their training you will provide organized rules they will be wanting to learn and follow.

Also by keeping their dog training consistent, they’re not going to forget any rules and become unruly. As German shepherds are full of energy and working dogs they’re not going to only benefit from the actionof training but additionally seekto make you happy and demonstrate their intelligence.

5.Reward them

You must always supply benefits throughout your German shepherd dog training. Not simply will this help encourage your dog to do well but also tell them that you’re pleased with what they are doing. Showing your dog respect is among the key tools in productive training.

German Shepherd Dog Puppy turned 1 year old today. Should I change her dog food?

I have a German Shepherd Dog by the name of Bella. She just turned one on the 7th. I only want to give her the best & at the moment I am currently giving her Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food instead of Blue Buffalo because her digestive system is able to handle it easier. I read the label on her bag of food and it is suggested that she continues to eat it until she is two years old. Well I have a friend that has his German Shepherd Dog (Rocky) on adult food already & it has been making me think that I believe it is time for me to start changing her dog food to the adult. I just was curious as to what other people felt on this issue. I am doing research but at the moment have not found anything to make me change my mind. Please help me with my current dilemma. Everyone on here has helped me in the past & I greatly appreciate all the help that you all have given me. Thank you ahead of time everyone for taking the time to even read this & give me your input.

Most large dogs continue to develop internally for several months to another year after turning one. Muscles, nerves, bones, and organs are still developing and strengthening. It would be wise to consult your vet, of course, but Eukanuba gives reliable advice on the feeding of dogs based on breed/size.

movie with talking german shepherd dog ?

the movie was from late 80’s or 90’s i dont know. but it had a german shepherd dog and a detective paired together.
the dog had some kind of special collar which ‘translated’ his barks/thoughts to human language and hence, a ”talking k9”.

does anyone know the name of this movie? i searched on google but couldn’t find it.
thanx

The movie you’re talking about is called K-9000.

It was a made-for-TV movie from 1989, but not released until 1991. It starred Chris Mulkey and Catherine Oxenberg. The dog, “Niner,” was trained by Birds & Animals Unlimited, which has done dozens of big animal films like Eight Below (2006) and Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008).

You can get K-9000 on DVD, but only in PAL (British) format. If you’re in the U.S. you can get it on VHS here:

http://www.amazon.com/K-9000-VHS-Chris-Mulkey/dp/6303954286/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=video&qid=1256345470&sr=8-2

K-9000 is one of the films featured in an upcoming book about German Shepherds in movies. Here’s a link to that:

Grooming Your German Shepherd the Way the Professionals Do, Part 1

Taking care of the basic health and grooming needs of your pet can be expensive if taken to a professional, but most of the things a professional does you can do yourself. For this example we’re using the same type of dog that I have, a German Shepherd Dog.

It’s important to remember that most unique breeds will have very different grooming and health requirements. Doing grooming yourself will cause much less stress to your dog, and in some cases they will even learn to enjoy it.

My German Shepherd looks forward to grooming (She knows that it is time for plenty of rub downs, playing, and treats.) You want to make sure you praise and reward your dog for being good while being groomed – you want to make it an experience that they look forward to.

It is true that German Shepherds have a “double coat”. This means they have that nice thick layer of outer fur that’s longer and more coarse and a softer fluffy, downy layer of fur beneath.

Flying Fur

While German Shepherds shed year round, shedding becomes really noticeable twice a year when they “blow their coat”. This is where they basically shed most of the summer, (then later on winter) coat over the course of a week or so.

To keep this from being a complete mess, you can groom more frequently and make sure that when grooming you get deep into the undercoat as well. Getting into the undercoat with a standard brush proves very challenging, it’s better to get something that’s specifically designed to clear up the undercoat like an Undercoat Rake.

Grooming Like a Pro

When grooming, you should begin at the head of your German Shepherd and brush back to the coat & tail with a slicker brush. You should then comb through the coat with a metal comb to remove any other loose hair. If you want you can go over the entire coat with a rubber curry brush. (This will help make the coat shinier and also give your dog a good rubdown)

If it’s shedding season, you will also want to use a shedding blade, (With this tool you groom from the rear to the front). It is very important to know the proper use of a shedding blade, and your groomer can help you with tips for proper use and safety. You should never use a shedding blade if you’re not 100% sure of the proper technique.

Grooming tips for your German Shepherds include many different steps, all of which are very important. And grooming is much more important than many people believe it to be. It’s true, German Shepherds are relatively maintenance free compared to many dog breeds but your GSD will need a little grooming TLC occasionally as well. Please do not neglect this area of German Shepherd ownership.

What are some good female dog names?

Well, I recently found out that I’m getting a bitch for my birthday in April, and I’d like some good names. Preferably human names. (Eg, not ‘Whiskers’ or ‘Patch’.)

I’m only asking on here because my folks have such outdated views on popular names that they’re suggesting me things like Mabel and Zen.

Note: Incase it somehow matters, the dog I’m getting is the standard colored black and tan German Shepherd.

Thanks for all your help.

Jared.

German Shepherd Origin and History

The German Shepherd dog breed has its origin in the late 1800s when Max von Stephanitz from Germany began developing a breed that would later become the dog we know today as the German Shepherd.Von Stephanitz desired to produce a dog breed that could be utilized as an all-around working dog.

Developed from various farm and herding dogs of his time, von Stephanitz’s original German Shepherd was derived from a herding dog he acquired in 1899, and he and his friend Artur Meyer formed the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde which was the first club in the German Shepherd dog breed history. This club and von Stephanitz kept tight control over the breed until his death in 1936.

He determined which dogs would be used to breed based on how well they did in various shows and trials that were the precursor to the Schutzhund tests still performed today. His main criteria for judging a dog’s success were both its usefulness coupled with its intelligence. Von Stephanitz also promoted the utility of the breed to the German government for work in both the police and the military as well as other all-purpose uses as a working dog breed.
German Shepherd Breed History

Following the creation of the German Shepherd breed by von Stephanitz in the early 1900s, the breed’s popularity soon soared and became one of Germany’s most popular dogs. Serving in both World War I and II, the German Shepherd was a favorite military dog, primarily in Germany, but American and British soldiers were also impressed by the breed and brought the dog home following both wars.

In fact, one of the most popular German Shepherds dogs was Rin Tin Tin, originally from France, and brought to America by an American GI following the first world war. Rin Tin Tin went on to make 26 movies until his death in 1932 and contributed to the breed’s enormous popularity.

In addition to its use in the police and military arenas, German Shepherds have a history of usefulness in other areas, is known as a successful show dog and has been a popular family pet. German Shepherds were the first dogs used as seeing eye dogs in the late 1920s and Helen Keller, an avid dog lover, owned a couple of German Shepherds.

The first German Shepherd Club in America was formed in 1913 and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1908. Instantly recognizable, the German Shepherd continues to be a popular dog breed, and the German Shepherd is continually in the top five most popular registered breeds as determined by the AKC.
