12 year old german shepherd on prednisolone for over 4 months for arthritis started off 4 tablets a day then went to 4 tablets every other day now on 2 tablets once a day dont seem to be helping much but have heard things like long term use has bad side effects, does any one know if this is true or not and if there is any cream you can buy for arthritis in dogs please dont say put her down cos shes brill apart from arthritis and i know people id sooner put down than my dog.
There are alternatives to pred for arthritis inflammation and pain. Check with your vet for Rimadyl, Adequan, and Palaprin6.
How long does a dog have to live after arthritis sets in?
He’s always had a super young spirit, and it’s really sad seeing how stiff he can get because it’s really killing his hyper activity. He doesn’t even look that old! It just became noticeable this month.
We’re going to take him to the vet within the week, but I was wondering how long he has under ideal conditions: if we can get pain relievers and anti-inflammation meds.
We live in Southern California so cold weather isn’t really a big issue. He’s half German Shepherd and half Greyhound; much smaller than a shepherd, and a little larger than a Greyhound. Anyone know how much time I can expect is left in him?
You didn’t really say how old he is, but my german shepherd had severe arthritis in her rear legs for several years. She just passed this January at 10 years of age. She was on pain medication and glucosamine as well as other suppliments for several years and got along really well. During her last six months she got progressively worse. I started getting her weekly shots which also helped her out but then it just didn’t work any more. She couldn’t get up or stand for a long period of time, she started having accidents in the house, and her quality of life went down hill very quickly. Being in the warmer weather will probably help. Just so you know, the pain medication and suppliments are not cheap. I was probably spending about $175 a month on them for her. The weekly shots also (which were vitamins, and some other suppliments) were about $105 a week. But she was worth it to me and it was very sad when she had to be put down. Good luck with her and I hope you have many more years with her.

I was looking at a breeder that I was looking to getting a puppy from but then i came across a Cinnamon Female German Shepherd puppy they had for sale. I Have never heard of such a thing. I was wonding what thats all about? IS it rare? Does that coat color meet breed standard?
There is no such thing as a “cinnamon” colored German Shepherd. The color of that pup would be referred to as liver. The puppy would grow up to look something like this:

Breeders who breed *for* the color are not breeding for the right reasons. Health, temperament, working ability and conformation should come before color. A breeder who advertises a puppy as something it’s not (i.e. a cinnamon colored German Shepherd puppy) is trying to promote the puppy to people who don’t know any better.
I have looked over this breeder’s website before and there have been a few different things that I have found that I did not care for as far as breeders go. Personally, I would suggest finding another breeder.
I have a 1 yr old german shepherd that got splashed accidently with hot grease a few months ago….?

It is not uncommon for hair to be unable to grow back over scar tissue. It may not grow back, and there is not anything you can do to make it grow. Grease burns are very serious burns, so it doesn’t surprise me that the hair is not growing back.
Also, hair often grows back white of scars. I think if your dogs hair was going to grow back, you would see growth by now.

Only “Nancy M” is on the right track so far.
But let’s get your terminology corrected – the allele for liver is NOT in the Dilute series (D^ for black vs d^ for dilute to blue-gray), it is in the B series (B^ for Black vs b^ for brown).
Each colour series so far named is autosomal, which means NOT in the sex chromosomes.
Incidentally, although not all geneticists agree with me, I prefer “mutation” applied to something that is in the first or second generation since it changed, “allele” applied to mutations that became established 3 or more generations ago. An example is the “Panda” markings – in Franka it is a mutation (she presumably got it from a gonadal mutation in a single cell of her sire’s testes, but it could have occurred at the moment of fertilisation); as those fanciers are now using her grandchildren, it is an established allele so far as I am concerned.
The alleles that produce liver and blues have been around for as long as anyone bothered to record canine history.
In a couple of breeds the b^ allele that, when present homozygously, produces liver colouration has become associated with disorders, but the b^ allele is NOT the cause (except that neither livers nor blues have black “leathers” – eye rims, nose, lips, pads – which makes them more susceptible to sunburn; their eyes are lighter, too, which would probably make them more susceptible to pannus if they were used to herd sheep). It’s just that in THOSE breeds a gene VERY close to the locus of the b^ allele long ago developed a damaging mutation, and because the two genes are so close to each other on their chromosome, almost every time that the mix-&-match of meiosis occurs, the damaging allele goes into the same gamete as the b^ does. It is, therefore, almost certain that livers in THOSE breeds are homozygous for the associated damaging allele. But the GSD is NOT (yet!) one of those breeds.

The problems that occur far too often in GSDs with incorrect coats – off-colours or long-coats – are entirely due to the policies of the breeder. Even those who breed CAREFULLY have too high a fault-rate for me – the good Yank breeders of self-whites set up a data-base of their results – I haven’t bothered checking it, but I’m told that 25% of the whites recorded there have at least one fault other than their white colour.
Yet the self-whites are, in the USofA, relatively popular, registering 5% of all AKC GSDs, so that those breeders have some degree of choice of partner.
By the time you look at the blues or the livers there are perhaps 1% of the breed with those colours, which boils down to perhaps 2 such pups born in each State per year. In other words, a person determined to produce a whole litter of blues or a whole litter of livers has very little choice of partner, and so such breeders tend to “forgive” a host of defects – I know of one breeder of blues in Texas who accepts that 30+% of her males are cryptorchids (the average in the whole breed is just 1%), and that she is producing weak temperaments, but I haven’t bothered checking what other faults she accepts – it was pure coincidence that I was told about those problems

Those are not colours, they are patterns.
Although there are genes for banned colours in the breed’s gene pool, GSDs are allowed only 2 colours:
• Black is REQUIRED
• Tan is optional.
What you asked about are the patterns produced by the Agouti gene series.
So far as GSDs are concerned, only these 3½ patterns are allowed:
• A^w = wolf-sable (gold sable, gray sable, “black” sable)
• a^t = tan-point (saddle, extended saddle, bi-colour)
• a^ = self-colour if present as a pair ( a^ a^ )
That is their order of dominance.
(Although “dominant” and “predominant” are linguistically closely related, they have importantly different meanings.)
- Which means that a wolf sable has at least one A^w allele, but we can’t tell by looking what its second Agouti allele is. That wolf sable could be caused by any of A^w A^w, or A^w a^t, or A^w a^.
(genes aren’t usually shown with the ^, but YA doesn’t allow formatting so I can’t use superscripts, nor even boldface & colour, to clarify that certain bits are genetic symbols)
- It means that a tan-point has no A^w but could be either a^t a^t or a^t a^.
- A self-black can be nothing but a^ a^.
Without knowing a LOT about the ancestry of each mating partner, and of its parents and its own progeny, we cannot even accurately guess what the second allele is, except for self-blacks.
The bit.ch I am currently trying to get pups from is a wolf-sable, as were both her parents. I suspect (from clues such as coat-length & type) that she is probably homozygous wolf sable ( that A^w A^w ), but she has an extended saddle brother and both her grandsires were saddle-marked, so she could well be heterozygous A^w a^t. There are no self-blacks in her ancestry during the many generations I know about, so she is not carrying the a^ for self-black. The stud I am using is an extended saddle with no self-blacks behind him that I know of, so he will be homozygous a^t a^t.
This means that if my bit.ch IS homozygous wolf-sable, ALL their pups will be heterozygous wolf-sables ( A^w a^t ). But if she is heterozygous then half their pups will be heterozygous sable, the other half homozygous tan-points (but whether normal saddles or extended saddles it is impossible for me to predict).
Note: The “half” is a statistical average from a HUGE number of pups. But random chance during both the meiosis that produces gametes (his sperm, her ova) and the fertilisation that produces embryos can, in the small numbers found in a litter, produce anything from 100% wolf sables to 100% tan-points.

Whether or not its a defect, the color liver in the German Shepherd Dog is considered to be a fault.
The GSD is either black or black and tan.
As quoted from the breed standard, “Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults.”
Liver may be appropriate in other breeds, such as the Border Collie.

The only “colours” allowed in the GSD are BLACK (which is compulsory) and TAN (which is optional). In the Agouti pattern series, a genuine GSD may be:
• wolf-sable (the guard hairs in the saddle area and ruff are black at the tips, lighter close to the follicle – how large the saddle area is, and how much of each hair IS black, produces the various gradations of wolf-sable: gray sable, gold sable).
• tan-point (the guard hairs in the saddle are black all the way – how large the saddle area is produces the various gradations of saddle-marked: saddle, extended saddle, bi-colour).
• self-black (the ability to produce tan pigment has been turned off).
All three patterns may have an insignificant chest spot; and may also have the odd light toe, provided that the nail of that toe is black.
All three patterns may have the tan genetically degraded to fawn or cream, but where 2 GSDs are of equal quality the richer colouring is to be preferred.
◙ All three patterns CAN have the black genetically damaged to appear gray-blue or liver, but both “colours” are banned.
◙ All three patterns CAN have the black pigment genetically switched off, so that the GSD is tan all over (some people call them “blondes”), but this “colour” is banned.
◙ Both the black & the tan pigments CAN be genetically blocked, so that the hairs are transparent and appear as white, but on GSDs white is banned if present in more than an insignificant amount. Which rules out both the “Panda-marked” GSDs and the self-white GSDs.
These things have NOTHING to do with regions of the world, despite that each of the rebel nations of Britain, Canada and the USofA has independently invented a rebel “Standard” all of its own. Britain’s The KC even allows self-whites to be shown as if they were typical, functional GSDs!

It’s been a few months now and she just turned one in September. She is purebred; straight from the breeder. I am worried this might be a malnutrition problem, as for the most part, German Shepherds’ backs are black for their saddle pattern, unless it is a white shepherd. I am afraid it might get lighter and lighter. Is this normal for a German Shepherd?
Yes, its called ‘ticking’ I think. Its when a german shepard starts to get silver hair mixed in with the black hair mostly along the saddle and upper neck and chest. This is completely normal and expected in the breed.
