What does DDR stand for?

Its something to do with old line, working German Shepherds and I cant find anything obvious on google.

Thanks.

Don’t worry about it – the DDR is ancient history, and only fanatics cling to the term when talking about GSDs.

It stems from when Germany was split up between the Allied nations at the end of WW2. Even the city of Berlin (which was in the Soviet sector) was divided up, with a wall built between the British & Yank sectors and the Soviet territory that surrounded them (for a while, the Allies had to load food & fuel into their planes & fly EVERYTHING into “West Berlin” so that the Germans there could survive). But it ended on 9 November 1989, when the Berlin Wall was broken up: http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=berlin+wall+comes+down&meta=&btnG=Google+Search.

DDR GSDs:
Because the Soviets set up an “Iron Curtain” separating themselves & their area of Germany from the rest of the world, by VE Day (8 April 1945) breeders in “East Germany” (DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik) had no access to bloodlines from the rest of the world. Also, because of the way the USSR’s soldiers behaved after conquering the eastern part of Germany, and because the Soviets kept civilian food supplies scant, most of the GSDs in Germany were killed at the end of WW2 – many were cooked & eaten. Those that remained were mostly used as guard dogs, and so GSDs that were interested in being friendly were eliminated. My discussion group has a rather lengthy thread discussing DDR dogs: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/GSD_Friendly/message/20465?var=1&l=1 Some parts are frivolous, but most parts are serious.

• To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

Is the DDR german shepherd extinct?

I’m looking to purchase the original line of german shepherd known as the DDR line….Are there breeders out there that breed this type instead of the crappy american line shepherds we have today?

I am not a German Shepherd Dog expert and am not familiar with the DDR German Shepherd Dog, also there are people in here who can answer this much better than I, but here in Europe there tends to be a difference in looks between show-line German Shepherd Dogs and working line German Shepherd Dogs.

Show-line dogs look something like this:

http://www.schaeferhunden.dk/abr/abr_avlshan_2006/foto_2006/scott.jpg

And this boy looks like the working line GSDs I’ve had the pleasure to meet, but there is much more variety in the looks of the working line dogs than there is in the looks of the show-line dogs, and from what I’ve heard the people with working line dogs tend not to be interested in showing, but focus solely on function:

What food is better for a German Shepherd puppy?

We are getting a 6 week old german shepherd and are wondering what food is best out of the 3.
Iams smart puppy proactive health
Purina puppy chow
Pedigree puppy complete nutrition
I found out that they are 7 weeks almost 8

Your future puppy is very lucky to have an owner like you who is so concerned about his health and well-being. Two of my dogs are now Seniors, and even before I worked for the company, they have been eating Iams.

For your large-breed puppy, we do recommend our Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed. Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed is designed specifically for large and giant breed puppies to help manage the growth these puppies generally experience. Nutritionally controlling the growth rate of large and giant breed puppies helps minimize the risk of common bone and joint problems.

Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed contains less fat, lower calories and reduced levels of protein with the proper calcium to phosphorus ratio to better meet the nutritional needs of your large breed puppy.

Additionally, our Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed contains the natural brain-building nutrient DHA, which can help make training your puppies easier.

Good luck with your puppy! He sounds like they he will be in good hands :-)

Harrison K-9s – the Best “homeland Security” Money Can Buy

Ever since 9/11 and the explosive growth of crime in our cities and neighborhoods, concerned and frightened citizens everywhere have been increasingly interested in protecting their property, and more importantly, those they love.

Modern technology has provided an array of solutions however one of the best-kept secrets can be found nestled among 25 acres in Aiken, South Carolina where the ultimate solution for “home-land” security can be found.

It’s called Harrison K-9 Security Services, a provider of the most sophisticated protection dogs in the world!

If you are like most people, your experience with trained dogs is probably limited to seeing them in back of police vehicles, looking menacing while barking uncontrollably.

Actually, military dogs have been used throughout history going back as far as the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Napoleon used them in 1798 to guard the walls of Alexandria, Egypt

In 1884, the German Army established the first organized Military School for training war dogs at Lechernich, near Berlin; and in 1885 wrote the very first training manual for MWD (Military War Dogs).

During the Gulf War, at least 1,177 highly trained German Shepherds were use by the French forces to guard and protect their troops, supplies and aircraft. The USA used 88 teams.

Harrison K-9 Security Services is the brainchild of Harrison Prather who started his own security dog business in 1975 after graduating college and apprenticing with a Master Trainer who specialized in training military and police dogs.

It was there that he realized that a key element of the “dog’s nature” was being ignored. Traditional training focused on the dog’s innate aggressive nature without control. “They naturally have the power,” says Harrison, adding, “What you want is to control that power….power without control is nothing.”

“The type of dog that we produce is a social dog that makes a great family pet but is also taught to defend its handler and its handlers’ family and loved ones with amazing ferocity and courage.”

Seeing is believing so if you really want to understand what Harrison is saying, I urge you to watch the company’s promotional video at www.harrisonk9.com/html/video.cfm

Consequently, that’s one of the things that separate Harrison K-9s from the rest of the industry and has made him one of the oldest and most prestigious Schutzhund or “protection dog” companies in the U.S.

Schutzhund (german for protection dog) is a dog sport that was developed in Germany in the early 1900s to test whether German Shepherd Dogs act and perform in the manner that the breed was intended, rather than simply evaluating a dog’s appearance. Today, many breeds other than German Shepherds can compete in Schutzhund, but it is a demanding test for any dog and few of them can pass this kind of test.

Harrison has been importing his dogs from the same source in Germany for over 15 years now. His supplier/importer has been, on several occasions, the Captain of the German International Team for Schutzhund competition.

When asked what makes his dogs so special and worth the $25,000 to $60,000.00 his clients pay for them, Harrison said, “you can compare them with thoroughbred race horses that are valued by their genetic purity and carefully preserved bloodlines.”

“These superior-bred dogs are handpicked by my supplier in Germany for their pedigree, intelligence, working abilities and temperament and then delivered to me after completing two to three years of foundation training. After that time these same dogs undergo rigorous evaluations and additional proprietary training designed for each individual client’s needs.

Harrison K-9 sells an average of 130 dogs a year; each trained to the specifications and needs of its new owner.

Harrison makes the ultimate decision….determining which dogs go with which clients. “It’s part science and part intuition…an intuition obviously developed as a result of 35 years in the business.”

The process begins with an informal conversation with the client questioning what kind of environment the dog will be in….are there children…security needs…lifestyle (will dog travel, etc.)

Each sale comes with a 60 day guarantee for compatibility and the company will replace the dog for any reason. “The customer is always right,” Harrison proudly stated.

A Harrison K-9’s three months of training is rigorous and extensive simulating real-life situations and taught to bite only on command, even if it’s provoked.

One of Harrison’s secrets is that his staff is almost entirely female to make sure that all dogs can be handled by the client and his or her family.

When each dog is trained and ready, the client can choose to receive their personal instructions in care and handling at the Harrison K-9 facility in Aiken, South Carolina. Or they can have the dog delivered to them along with two trainers who introduce the dog to the new family and teach its members the commands and signals the dog relies on. Every client gets a DVD copy of the care and handling training they receive and the company also offers periodic training if needed to refresh their memory.

Clients come from the U.S., Europe, and Latin America and include a “who’s who” of dignitaries and celebrities, many of whom will never be mentioned by Harrison or any of his workers as anonymity is sacred at Harrison K-9.

When I asked Harrison to “drop a couple of names” of some of the more notable celebrities that have bought dogs from him, he apologized and said that he couldn’t answer me. This is because he promises every client the utmost in anonymity even though he could certainly capitalize financially by using their names in his brochures and other marketing materials.

One typical Harrison K-9 client who has had security problems in the past describes themselves as “recognizable with a high-profile lifestyle.” They’ve opted to forgo armed bodyguards in favor of a pair of Harrison K-9 protection dogs and now have the best of all worlds because in addition to having superior protection, they also have a loving and playful pet for their children and grandchildren.

“Does your security system include unconditional love like mine does?” he jokingly asked.

If the security is an issue of concern for you, your property or family then an executive protection dog must be seriously considered.

In multiple studies and interviews conducted among convicted sexual assault, robbery and burglary felons they were asked what security measures taken by homeowners were most effective at deterring their criminal intentions. Consistently, at the top of the list were security dogs!

WHY?
1) Canine hearing abilities…more sensitive then alarm systems;
2) Canine barking alerts homeowners and neighbors;
3) Fear of being attacked;

It is clear that Harrison and his staff have the entire process of dog selection, training and delivery down to a science making the experience an enjoyable one for the client and his or her family.

Now all you need is $25K to $60K and it’s a done deal. If you think that’s a lot of money…it is! However when you run the numbers and compare apples to apples, not only is it a great deal….it’s a must have!

True working German Shepherd lines…..any good kennel references?

I’m looking for a German working-line dog, and I’m having trouble finding kennels. I’m interested in Schutzhund but can’t find a good kennel!
Did I mention I’m willing to travel a bit? Anyways, I’m located in northwestern PA.

There are YahooGroups dedicated to DogSport (that Yanks think is “Working”) plus other aspects of training-for-a-function. You’ll have to decide for yourself which focus on the aspects you are interested in.
My e-group includes 3 who use GSDs on their sheep farms (one using the traditional boundary patrolling method), some who do DogSport (including the 2008 captain of the USA team to the world SchutzHund championships), 3 who run S&R groups, a couple who do drugs & explosives detection training.

Otherwise, those NAmerican breeders who are personally active (as opposed to being “agents” who rely upon importing el-cheapo pooches that got their qualifications at “midnight trials”, then mate them together to produce pups of less-than-ideal ancestry but great for advertising purposes) will belong to one of these 3 DogSport organisations:
GSSCC
USCA
WDA
or PAM if you extend into Mexico.
Their web-sites can be found in The Source: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/GSD_clubs_001198297060/

If you realise that the true herding lines are what “working” actually refers to, start from http://www.german-shepherdherding.com/ The owner breeds for her own farm, not for “the market”, and so is into only her third generation of home-breds based on the stud-line of her mentor, the ONLY person to have won the SV’s herding trophy outright. But her site links you to others active in the herding field.

I like good ole farm dogs :) . While I admire the other working breeds like German Shepherds, Aussies, Great Pyrenees( had one, while we had some goats), I really love my rat terriers. I’m not sure if they would classify as a working breed, probably not but many are still doing what they were bred to do, either hunting small animals or killing rats/vermin.

Many people still keep them to do their original purpose: catching rats. I’ve know quite a few farms to still have them for that purpose. I knew a breeder that bred the working lines( can i use that if its not a working breed?) and hunters/farmers bought them.

Mine were just pets although they did catch quite a few things on their own, no training.

Sorry I know they are classified as terriers but some still use them for their original purpose.

AKC Registered German Shepherd Breeders

Who hasn’t passed a pet store and noticed the cute, sad-eyed puppies behind the glass? What most don’t know is the history behind those puppies and the pet store itself. Unfortunately, pet stores are not the best place to purchase puppies. This article will explain the reasons why. Pet buyers shopping for purebred German Shepherd puppies must take care in where they buy their desired pet. Thorough research into German Shepherd breeders and other sellers must be done. Additionally, pet buyers must research the breed they are buying and be prepared to care for its specific needs.

The German Shepherd is a large sheep-herding dog breed. The breed’s history is recent. The first German Shepherd breeder, Max von Stephanitz, founded The German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany which classified the German Shepherd in 1899. The American Kennel Club (AKC) registered the breed in the herding group in 1911. Though German Shepherds come from one of many versions of German sheep-herding dogs, they perform many other functions today.

The German Shepherd dog has a large body and is wolfish in appearance. Stephanitz initially inbred the line to retain its lupine beauty, intelligence and utility. Unfortunately, inbreeding also caused genetic defects. German Shepherds are highly prone to hip dysplasia and other skeletal disorders. It is recommended that any potential buyer ask for a warranty from the breeder that their dog has been evaluated and cleared for hip dysplasia.

There are many places where a buyer can acquire a purebred German Shepherd. These include breeders, brokers, the Internet, the newspaper (private owners), pet stores, shelters and rescue centers. Simply put, the best place to buy a purebred German Shepherd is from a certified, ethical German Shepherd breeder. These breeders have their own kennels and often work in tandem with rescue centers or house rescues within their own kennels. All other sellers of German Shepherds cannot provide a full history and put buyers at risk of purchasing dogs with health and behavioral problems as well an uncertain ancestry.

A bad German Shepherd breeder only breeds dogs for cold hard cash and nothing more. They see the puppies and the parents as merchandise, not as living creatures. The term puppy mill or backyard breeder is the name given to these illicit breeders. The females are bred each and every season leading to shorter life spans and ill health. They are confined to very small cages and have no socialization of any kind. The puppies are kept in the same kind of conditions, which can lead to physically and emotionally unhealthy litters. These are the kind of puppies found at pet stores.

The best advice is to find a reputable German Sherperd breeder that really cares about the puppies they produce. This kind of breeder will ask questions of potential buyers to ensure the well being of the puppy in it’s new home. They will have all the appropriate paperwork such as American Kennel Club registration and veterinarian health reports as well as plenty of care information to pass on to the new family.

What’s the difference between the German Shepherd Working line West vs. East German (DDR)?

I was wondering what the difference is between the different types of German Shepherd working line dogs, mainly West German and East German. Which lines do you prefer? Also, are there any famous dogs from either lines that are well known?

WOT “working lines”?
In my rarely-humble opinion, a working dog is one that earns its living every day, so is a detection dog or a guide dog or a herding dog. Police dogs work, but only in bursts. Search&Rescue dogs work, but rarely for more than a day.
People who rabbit on about “working dogs” almost invariably actually mean SPORT dogs. Sport dogs are as close to the correct GSD as are show dogs – in both cases the breeders aim for extremes, it’s just that their desired extremes are in very different directions.

WOT “DDR lines”?
Could you read, back when the Berlin Wall tumbled (November 1989) and the DDR ceased to exist? Work out how far back in the pedigree each actual DDR dog must be by now.

Realise that WHERE a pooch comes from is far less important than WHO chose the breeding partners (and why), and HOW the progeny were reared.

However, I can probably satisfy your current curiosity by giving the pre-history of a line of GSDs working in the Catskills in New York state:
MANY years ago, just before the DDR was finally closed off from the west, a young shepherd realised that the Soviet police were after him, so he & his GSD hurriedly escaped to West Germany. That makes both him and his dog “DDR lines”.
In West Germany he leased an occasional bit.ch and mated her to his current dog, and whenever he could he competed in the SV’s annual HGH championship, winning in these years with these dogs:
1954 ERWIN vd. SOBRIGAUER HÖHE
1959 CHLOTAR v. DREIBRÜDERHOF
1963 ERLO vd. STAMMHERDE RAMHOLZ
1967, 1969, 1970 NANDO vd. STAMMHERDE RAMHOLZ
1972, 1973, 1975 WITZ vd. STAMMHERDE RAMHOLZ
1976 EDO vd STAMMHERDE RAMHOLZ
1981, 1984, 1985 FAX
All trained by, and most bred by, Manfred Heyne (for their parentage see http://www.german-shepherdherding.com/manfred-english/index.html which is actually an interview with Manfred). And he did what was deemed impossible – won the HGH trophy outright, so that the SV had to have a new one made!
Then a GSD-loving Yank accountant bought a run-down farm and went to Germany to have her bit.ch mated to Manfred’s dog, and to learn all she could from him before returning to Yankeeland and whelping her bit.ch, from which she kept “Nicky”. That “Nicky” was instinctively a GENUINE GSD cannot be doubted. In addition to “explaining” to her that what she was telling him to do with the flock was wrong, his character was such that he forced to a stop a bulldozer that was attempting to take a short cut across the day’s patrol line; yet on another occasion, when a city-kids baseball team was left in his care while the farmer made a hurried trip to town, he trained the boys so that some patrolled the boundary for him while others patted him and another fetched him bowls of water.
“Nicky” died nearly 2 years ago, but she currently has 7 of his children & grand children working or started, including one who was returned to her from Germany when Manfred became too old to continue herding.
Some of “Nicky”s exploits are featured in the http://www.ddrlegends.com/nicky.html web-site.

Some other GSDs which showed the traits we love in our breed, but which didn’t get the Hollywood or TV treatment were:
• 1943 Chips, a GSD x Husky x Collie donated to the 3rd Infantry Division as a sentry dog by his New York master, served in 8 campaigns that took him through North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. On 10 July, during the invasion of Sicily, his unit was pinned down by machine gun fire. Chips charged the post and, despite taking several bullets, mauled the occupants & forced their surrender. Dwight D Eisenhower met him & awarded him a Silver Star and a Purple Heart, making him the most-decorated war dog of WW2 (The army later withdrew them, scared of the awards insulting human soldiers or their families)
• 1944 On 6 June Brian, a GSD attached to Britain’s 13th Battalion Airborne Division, parachuted into Normandy with his unit at the start of D-Day
• 1947 On 15 August an explosion in the William pit, under the sea off Whitehaven, UK, killed 104 miners. Jet of Iada, retired after an immense amount of rescue work during the Blitz, was taken underground WITHOUT the breathing equipment that the rescue workers needed to survive the toxic fumes. Though gasping for breath, Jet was nevertheless alert enough to push his handler to safety just before another section of tunnel collapsed. For the rest of the story, ask the Breed Council of Britain for copies of its September, October & November 2008 National Magazine.
2001 – want to bet that every GSD working its paws off after the collapse of the Twin Towers had DDR parents?
Forget about famous ancestors – we are breeding with just what is available via the sire & dam and their 4 parents. Checking further back is important for avoiding recessives, but not for producing the points you DO want.

Why is PETA so crazy?

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Bidens-Puppy-Breeder-Never-never-never-again.html?yhp=1

Fifteen minutes of fame turned into four months of bitter remorse for the Chester County woman who sold the Bidens their adorable little German shepherd puppy……..PETA seized the moment as an opportunity to blame the killing of shelter animals on people who buy from breeders. The organization’s TV commercial, “Buy One, Get One Killed” ran in Delaware after the Biden puppy story made headlines.

http://www.petakillsanimals.com/

PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.

I don’t know, but I can’t stand them myself, and I’m a liberal Democrat (as you probably know) … Vegetarian activism is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen, closely followed by Environmental Extremism
