Why does my cousin have a German Shepherd/Yorkshire terrier?

It’s very cute. But, how did the Yorkie reach up to the female GSD???????? IM CONFUSED………………
How did they do it??

About 25 yrs ago I had a male chihuahua about 5 months old. One day I let him out to do his business and there was a GSD in heat and she lured him out of our yard. I idn’t think he would breed that early. I couldn’t find my little chihuahua, looked for him a long time, and finally this GSD came trotting down the street with my little chihuahuas attached to her rear end. I don’t know how it happened but it did. We moved away not long after and did not get to see the pups.

What is the best puppy food to feed german shepherd puppies in the UK, and where is it available. Many Thanks?

I am due to pick up my German Shepherd Pup in approx 10 days and want to make sure that I have everything in place.

One of my concerns is choosing the best puppy food that is easily available in the UK (London). I have heard of a brand called eukanuba which sounds perfect, however I do not know if this is easily available in the UK, therefore I would really appreciate your help in this matter.

You must be dead excited about getting your puppy! I love german shepherds they are wonderful dogs.

I get my food from there and they are really quick at getting it out to you. I would also suggest if you are changing the food from something else that you make sure that you do it gradually over 2 or 3 weeks. So for first wee while do 75% old food 25% new food and so on till you get down to just the new food.

Its best to do it this way as sometimes changing your dogs diet quickly can cause them to have an upset stomach.

I think you have your list pretty much sorted, though you have missed off a bed and maybe a blanket plus I would say a wee soft toy as well as puppies need something soothing as they won’t have their mums.

Other foods that are good in case you decide against Orijen are Burns, Arden Grange, Royal Canin & James Wellbeloved.

if he is barking at other people then try having a stranger or that person come in and if the dog barks then walk out or use a lil discipline (spray bottle) and try it over and over and when he does get it right, give him a little treat

How do I get my dogs to get along?

I’ve had a chihuahua for 2 years now. I got 6 week old german shepherd from a friend 3 days ago. The german shepherd is really friendly with my chihuahua but not the other way around. Many of the dogs they have are housebroken, good with children/pets, go through at *least* basic training [depends on how long they've been there], come with a vet check and testing for HW, spayed/neutered, and sometimes either a microchip, or a discount on one.

i have a german shephard too!! She is two year now…and she knows how to shake…so what you do it tell him to sit and then touch its paw and say shake…then if he shakes…give him a treat to tell him a good job

Also, i taught my dog this really funny trick where you put a treat in front of him and say “Nose” so that means he can only smell it..and then say “ok” and tell him he can have the treat…you have to practice though because my dog kept eating the treats so patience is key..

Also, i do this thing (my dog LOVES carrots) where i hold a carrot near my head and tell my dog to sit..and then i clap my hands meaning he can jump and grab the carrot..its kinda funny

Help with my German Shepherd Dog!?

Last month i adopted a german shepherd, Boomer. He is a fantastic dog and we love him to death. But the only thing we want to change is his energy. We take him and my other dog on walks (20 min) runs (20). He gets ran once a day, and walked twice. Nearby my home we have a herding and agility coarse, which we might start him up with. But he is kind of agressive with strange dogs. So we signed him up for petco classes. What else can we do to get rid of agression and to excersise him? Please Help!
We play in my acre yard for 30-45 min a day. He has tennis balls, ropes, and chews.

You should bring him to socialization classes so he can get used to other dogs, im still working on my terrier as he has aggression issues with big dogs. Also, try bringing him to a park to get him socialized aswell, it has helped my dog a lot. He still barks at other dogs but he has stopped attacking them which is good. A good technique to stop barking in to bring a water spray if he is afraid of water, use their weaknesses against them, if they are afraid of something, use it with a firm NO, but don’t shout at him, and the habbit should be broken after a while.

Aggressive German Shepherd, desperate for help?

I usually don’t go to the internet for help but, my friend suggested I give this a try.

I rescued a German Shepherd about 8 months ago, he’s 2 years old. When I went to look at him they told me he was a sweet heart, good with other dogs, and it seemed it.

He was abused before I adopted him. He started showing slight signs of aggressive towards my Bull mastiff and I let them know it wasn’t on and upped my leadership role a lot. Everything seemed alright, until my boyfriend started coming over more, and he started growling at my boyfriend , and then other people coming over.

I’ve started to muzzle him on walks, and when guests are over, but I don’t know what to do.
I live about 5 hours away from a city, and the one trainer I found prices were out of my budget. Is it anything I can do? Is it hopeless?
I’ve used her methods, and they didn’t work at all. He’s not trying to protect me either, it’s fear based aggression.

I suspect that you need to say “Goodbye” to your current boyfriend – dogs can be amazingly perceptive as to the “inner nature” of people.
However, the dog could be treating EVERYONE with misguided suspicion.

But if it IS fear-based aggression then the first thing you must do is convince him that you can be trusted to protect him from everything. Without that confidence, nothing else is going to work.

But definitely join SOME of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs, so that the people you ask questions of actually KNOW about the breed. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Most allow you to include photos so that you can show how your pet is progressing or reacting.

Is a german shepherd/terrior mix even possible? haha?

We got our dog from a animal sanctuary and they said they think he is terrier and German shepherd mix. All his brothers and sisters look like terriers but he looks like German Shepard/ husky! Hes about 4 months old and when he sits his head stands about 1 foot and 4 inches from the ground. He seems bigger than a full grown terrier right now. The fact is they found the litter on an Indian reservation in Utah so they can’t tell exactly the day he was born or what he is. Do you think he will get German shepherd size? Hes definitely German shepherd, he looks like one and definitely acts like one, but he has a husky mask and floppy ears.

He’ll likely not be as big as a German Shepherd but you never know. It’s hard to say with mixed litters.. You can only guess..

If you really mean a “shepherd” (a human who looks after sheep), it’s because she is isn’t a slut.
If your meant “Shepherd Dog”, it’s because (unlike sluttish humans), even when in season she isn’t ready to be mated any old day.

Also, she might also have bonded with another dog, as my youngest has bonded with her older brother.
She might well be terrified of the loutish dog you’ve chosen

Were there a restriction in her vulva, that would result in the dog probing then dismounting.

But none of that matters.
YOU don’t have a bit.ch worth mating.
NO-ONE who comes to YA to ask questions about breeding has a pooch worth mating.

See, anyone who DOES have a pooch worth mating would be asking:
• the pooch’s breeder;
• their breed mentor;
• the people in the club where they show & train their pooch.
• the people in the GSD discussion groups they belong to.

Being worth mating has little to do with whether the pooch has Registration with the country’s official Kennel Club, but that IS the first essential.
It has to do with having:
□ a well-balanced pedigree,
□ show certificates to prove its construction typical of its breed,
□ performance certificates to prove its attitude/behaviour typical of its breed,
□ “health” certificates to show that it is not personally afflicted by any of the main problems in that breed (but, as most problems are due to recessives, he/she could still PRODUCE those problems when mated to the wrong partner).

It is difficult to complete all the necessary credentials at younger than 25 months. Which is fine, because a GSD bit.ch is not mentally mature until about 2 years old, and not physically mature until about 2½.
Many poor “pet” bitches get mated at their first season, and end up in the situation of an 11-12 year old girl being expected to rear twins. The warnings others have given aren’t “cause & effect”, they are all effects of the bitch being still immature.

If you want to be a breeder, then go about it PROPERLY.
There isn’t room here to list everything, but early steps should be:
• download http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc and LEARN it almost off by heart. The rebel “Standards” put out by the KCs in Britain, Canada, the USofA are crap.
• join a GSD club and participate in its activities
• buy a couple of quality GSD books – I recommend either of Dr Malcolm Willis’s “GSD History & Genetics” books, and “The GSD Today” by Strickland & Moses .
• join some of the 300+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you what they like to discuss, and how active they are.

Between those sources you will learn what is required of a GSD for it to be considered breed-worthy.
You MIGHT have fluked such a pooch, but unless you bought it from a top-class breeder and all the animals in her pedigree have BS.Cl. or KKl (for a genuine GSD) or are show champions (for a show-is-all deviation), the odds are incredibly heavily against it.

The White Shepherd Dog is recognized and registered as a German Shepherd Dog under the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and the Kennel Club [U.K.] (KC), although the colour white is a disqualification they are not eligible to be shown in the conformation ring.
Because of this and because many German Shepherd Dog breeders will not breed to the white dogs, White Shepherd clubs in North America have been pursuing the goal of breed separation, in hopes of attaining the proper recognition that these dogs deserve. Through careful study of the breed worldwide, it has been determined that there is a sufficient gene pool to support a separate breed.
The Breed Standards developed for the White Shepherd Dog are very similar to that of the Breed Standards for the German Shepherd Dog except, of course, colour. According to the UKC Breed Standard, the ideal coat colour is a pure white. However, colours ranging from a very light cream to light biscuit tan are acceptable. Skin colour should be pink to grey, with grey preferred. The nose, lips, eye rims, and pads must be fully pigmented and black in colour.

what are you’re favortite and most trusted german shepherd puppy breeders?

I’m looking to get a german shepherd puppy… I am just not sure what breeders are best. you know, the ones where they’re nice to the animals and ones that are not puppy mills. If you have any recommendations please type in their website while you are answering. Thank you.

There is a finding a breeder section.
There are many breeders on this site and many knowledgable people that can point you to a reputable breeder in your area. These people will be able to offer first hand knowledge on the breeder.

Or you can post breeder sites on here and people can let you know if they look ok or not.

ETA- I cannot find anything on the first breeder site suggested that refers to OFA (hip xrays and ratings) on any of the dogs. They also have a purchase policy that deals only with money, no health guarantees.
And they are working dogs. You may not want to deal with a GSD from working lines if you are only looking for a pet.

How do you stop a german shepherd puppy from barking and biting at 6 week old?

Yeah well i just got my puppy 2 days ago & its 6 weeks old and she’s ok and everything but when she plays or doesn’t like been pick up starts to growl and then starts barking and bitting hard all furious and everything i never seen that in a puppy i dont know what to do because i already got bite on my hand so yeah help cuz i i try so many ways but none have really work???

ok, we are dealing with a few issues here, so lets get started.

First of all, the puppy you go there, take it back to the breeder now. That puppy is only 6 weeks old, how dare anyone seel a puppy that old to anyone. Puppies are not suppose to be removed from the litter until 8 weeks at the earliest. I know, whats 2 weeks, but 2 weeks to a puppy is like 6 months to you and me. Puppies are suppose to be with their litter until 8 weeks of age for proper socialization (“The Dog Listener” by Jan Fennell and
“The Art of Raising a Puppy” by the Monks of New Skete”)
Second books, I know, in this day adn age, who reads a book. Well, you might want to, the two formentioned would be a good start. They both deal with the issues that you are dealing with, including step by step instructions on what to do with a new puppy. Now as for the one you have now, if the asshole breeder doesn’t take the puppy back.

Do not tap, slap, pop, or in any other way shape or form hit that puppy. I mean, when you were a baby, and you were crying or biting, did your parents hit you for that. If they did, you need help. If the puppy is grawling or anything like that when you are trying to hold it, roll it over on its back in your arms. This shows the puppy that he has no control and needs to learn to submit. As for the biting, if it really hurts that bad, and believe me, I have been around enough puppies to know, then let him know. Scream really loud “OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and then place the puppy down, do not throw toss, or in any way forcefully remove the puppy from you. Get up and walk away from the puppy. 10-1 says that the puppy will come running back to you. I have a 6 month old GSD and he was nipping when we got him, took about a day, but can take as long as a week. You will learn that the puppy wants to play with you, and it will learn not to bite.
