I need help with my 1 year old German Shepherd?

He is a wonderful dog that I rescued but he has a few bad habits. I need to know how to stop him from digging.. He chews on paper(I give him rawhides constantly). He likes to playfully nip at your feet legs arms or butt. He is trying to get you to play when he does this(he gets walked twice a day). He is constantly wanting to play.

German shepherd puppy slight aggression problem need help?

okay so the fact is inh Egypt (where i am) there are no professioal dog trainers …and i am good at training dogs but ive been recently facing a slight agression problem with my german shepherd 3 month old puppy … She is kept in a room for herself and she is very nice with people but whenever i get another puppy (male or female) and btw mine is female…she growls at first and then she starts to attack the other puppy…in a really aggressive way to the extent if i leave them togeather in her room she might kill the other dog or cause it severe injuries…please i need help with this because i wish to get more puppies …much appreaiated thanks alot

3 months is a young age to show aggression like that… you need to get her out and meet as many dogs as possible to socialize her… Keep her on a leash and the second you hear even the slightest growl or she starts trying to go after another dog with aggression on her mind make a loud noise to distract her, or squirt her in the face with water to distract her (or use another action without hitting or getting mad at her). Next tell her firmly to ‘Leave It’ and proceed to go the other direction of the dog she was trying to go after. Do not let her look back at the dog. With patience she will hopefully get better. Never strike her though, as this will only make the situation worse. Good luck with her.

Teaching Tricks to Puppy?

I tried charging the clicker with my 2 month old german shepherd puppy. She doesnt really pay attention to the clicker. Should i try in a month or so when she gets a little older. Any tips on training her? any info would be appreciated.

You have to build value to the clicker. As a two month old puppy, it means nothing to her.

Start by cutting up hot dogs. They make very good treats. Cut them up into pea sized pieces. Then sit with her in a low distraction room, like an enclosed bedroom. Then just click and treat. For a good twenty minutes just click and give her a treat, no asking for anything. After only this one session, she will love the clicker. Once she loves the clicker, training her with it will be a lot easier.

Start by teaching her the basics, you have to know how to add and subtract before you can do algebra. Start with sit. Take a treat and put it in front of her and slowly bring it up above her head and she should eventually fall into a sit. Immediately click and treat her. After a few repetitions, she should be falling into the sit automatically. When she’s doing this, add the command “Sit” before the behavior. By the end of the day she should have a good idea of “Sit”.

Continue to work on it everyday and she’ll have a reliable sit by the end of the week.

The same for down. Lure her from a sit into a down and click and treat once the elbows touch the ground. Once she is going into the down automatically, with little coaxing, add the command.

A basic obedience class would be a good investment for you and your puppy. They teach you many valuable information about training and it’s a good experience for your puppy.

I have a 90 lbs German Shepherd and we walk past a yard with a vicious pit bull. Will it win a fight against the pit bull if it chooses to jump the fence and attack?
I look at studies and they discovered that pit bulls DO NOT have locked jaws. However sometimes pit bulls jaw muscle continue to contract after tranquilize along with other breeds like Belgian Malinois. Also a German shepherd has more bite force.

How To Choose A Dog That Will Make You Happy!

To create a new breed someone decides what characteristics they want the breed to have. Then they only breed dogs together who have those characteristics. Lots of inbreeding then takes place. So assuming you’re going to purchase or adopt a purebred puppy or dog, here are some of the things to consider about the many different breeds:

Shedding

All dog breeds shed hair. They all shed different amounts of hair. Some breeds shed virtually no hair, some shed quite a lot, and some shed a lot of hair!

If it bothers you finding loose hairs stuck to everything in your home then choose a low-shedding breed.

Ease of Training

Some breeds are easier to train than others because they learn training commands faster.

The easier the dog is to train the less time and patience you need to train him.

If you want a dog who learns your commands quickly choose a breed that is easy to train.

Grooming

How much time you need to spend grooming your dog depends on the length of the coat and how much the coat sheds. If the dog breed you’re considering has a long coat you’ll need to either clip it short, or brush it often. If the dog breed you’re considering sheds lot of hair you might find yourself brushing the coat every day to remove the dead hair. Because what you remove with a brush doesn’t end up in the house!

Good With Children

Who is the world’s most loyal and best guard dog?(large breed)?

I am a little bit confused between German shepherd and Doberman. Through I prefer Doberman who are known for there loyalty and guard dog ability. who has got maximum physical strength in large dog breed? (not giant breeds such as st bernard, mastiff etc.)

a WELL BRED Doberman or GSD will both be great loyal companions and great dogs overall. physical strength is not as important as the dogs temperament. if you get a poorly bred GSD or Dobie, they will be timid, nervous and hiding behind you for protection! these dogs have been bred so poorly in US lately that they are shadows of their old selves.

if you are ready to shell some $$ for a good bred dog, do your research on both breeds and decide for yourself what are the most important traits. with GSD, there is more hair, with doberman(if you do ear crop) there is ear care. Doberman will also not do well if its really cold or hot, they tend to be quite sensitive to weather temperatures.

in the schutzhund club where i train my dobie, i see many great GSDs, Rotties, Boxers and Dobies. all are well bred and with training they are great protection dogs, but they do need training.

edit: amarant, doberman was bred specifically to be a guard dog. my dobie is friendly as can be until she senses danger or my fear and trust me you would not want to cross her. she is not an aggressive attack machine, she is a confident dog that will destroy anything that poses danger to her pack.
sounds like you came across some poorly bred dobies, please don’t base your opinion on the couch potatoes US back yard breeders are popping out.
I always get compliments from vets and friends and strangers on what a sweet heart she is and what a well mannered dog she is. I worked hard to make her that way. Socialized, socialized and socialized when she was a pup. When she is working with me though she is a freaking beast.

Stubborn Dog – Help For Training

Knowing HOW TO train a stubborn dog makes a huge difference but it is still not as easy as training a normal dog. Stubborn dogs tend to come from these breeds so I will start this article by identifying these breeds. This might help you in making a decision when buying a dog.

Stubborn dogs are not found in the sporting dogs as often as they are found in the hound and terrier groups. I think about a dog that is very stubborn until they tree or pursue the game to the end when I think about hounds. Many people in my area, who have deer dogs, sometimes have to wait until season is over to find their dogs.

This is not to say these dogs can not be trained at all but rather to say it will take patience, knowledge, and confidence on the trainer’s part to be successful. These breeds are not well suited for kennels and they need companionship. Many people are taking on the challenge of dog training today because economic conditions has made professional training fees more of a luxury than a necessity. If you make a decision to train your own dog, you will need a good book or two to learn the helpful secrets that will save you hours of frustration.

Dog training can be likely to become a struggle between the trainer and the dog. When you understand that dogs have a “pack nature” that creates a “dominate nature” it makes it easy to understand the struggle. This means they had rather lead than follow! If you have had children you may understand this concept.

Here are some tips when working with a stubborn dog…

1- Use a firm voice but be cautious not to scream and lose your cool. You must be consistant when working with your dog because like children, they will pick up on inconsistance without difficulty. This creates confusion in their mind. Just imagine if you were the dog and one time you get scolded for doing something wrong and the next time you get a pat on the head. Also be very precise to correct your dog when the problem occurs. Dogs do not comprehend delayed punishment.

2- Body language is also important because you want to look sure of yourself to your dog and always look them in the eyes. This is somewhat of a domination technuqie. When correcting or praising your dog, always look them in the eyes.

3- One great techneque is to use some type of noise maker when your dog is not obeying. These items are trouble-free to make by taking a plastic bottle and placing a few small rocks in it. If you need to correct the dog by stricking them with an object that does not hurt, but makes a loud noise, use a large plastic baseball bat. If you need a louder sound, buy a bat with a larger end. You can also drop a few small pebbles in the end of the bat for additional sound.

4- Using a pinch collar to train your dog to heel, sit, and stay is the fastest easiest method there is. I can train most dogs with this method within one week. It works great and this is the first step in training. This method can be found in eBooks.

Training your own dog will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. You will enjoy showing your dog’s obedience to all of your friends. The sooner you get started the sooner you will achieve success.

I adopted my dog when he was a year and a half (and fixed), he pretty much didnt know any tricks! I taught him everything like sit, stay, lie down, etc – even how to roll over! It didnt even take him long to learn those things!

Also, before him I had adopted 2 Rotts that were 5 years old and I taught them new things all the time, even as they got older.

So no, I dont think that is true!

Tips for introducing a tiny dog to a somewhat aggressive german shepherd?

What is your experience introducing a very small dog (7 lb adult pomeranian) to a somewhat aggressive and large german shepherd?

I have 5 year old German Shepherd who is also “somewhat” aggressive lol. She is not mean, but when it comes to other dogs sometimes she is not so cheery. Well my best friend got a Husky puppy, and we decided we wanted them to be friends. But when I tried to introduce them, but GSD didn’t exactly love the puppy, and vice versa. So I decided to put the puppy in a kennel in the middle of my living room, and allow my GSD in to come up to it and do what it liked. This way I knew no matter what my dog couldn’t hurt it, and the puppy couldn’t run away. It worked very well. At first my dog barked and the puppy seemed scared, but after a bit it realized it was safe, and my dog realized that the puppy wasn’t a menacing threat. They started smelling each other and my dog calmed down, and I just sat and watched TV and let them go awhile like that untill my dog started to ignore the puppy. Then I was able to let them out and play. I still had to monitor them, because my dog was bigger and rougher. Since your pom is an adult he probably won’t be as scared as my puppy was, so you will probably have an easier time. But you should put whichever dog is the new dog to the household in the crate, and allow the dog who has been there awhile to get use to him in there before allowing them out to play. Also, if you are having aggression problems with your GSD, and he’s not good with dogs in general, you might want to consider taking him to a basic obedience class to socialize with other dogs and learn some obedience. First time Dog Owner: German Shepherd Questions?

I’m looking into buying a german shepherd puppy by the end of the year and I was wondering if you all would be able to share with me your experiences with them?

Two specific questions come to mind is:
How loyal are they, especially the females?

Also, my gf is going to getting an Akita later in the year. How do german shepherds respond to new puppies in the household? The Shepherd will roughly be a year old before we can get the Akita.

I raised and trained a female, and she was a magnet dog. She would barely let me go into another room.

I also raised and trained a male. He is also a magnet dog. I trust him with my life. However, I’ve raised him since he was born, whereas I didn’t work with the female until she was about 4-6 months old. He is very loyal, and I wouldn’t trade the friendship and loyalty for anything in the world.

If you raise the female from a puppy, I have seen MANY other females be extremely loyal to their owner.

My GSD is fine with all other dogs, as long as they don’t get between him and I. As long as they stay out of our pack, he’ll play with them and enjoy their company. Other GSD’s that I know of have MAJOR issues with any northern breeds. Akitas were from Japan, and northern Japan as well. It will depend on the breeder’s stock, and how they react to other dogs and breeds. I would make sure to mention this to the breeder. However, any dog can be trained, and as long as you have your GSD to a point where it knows you are in charge and it WILL obey you, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Do keep in mind that these are BOTH very strong willed dogs that take a firm leader.

Need advice for getting a German Shepherd puppy?

I’ve always wanted a German Shepherd. I hope to get one in a few months. Are there any tips for getting and training a friendly, loyal dog who is gentle around children and doesn’t bark his head off?

Get a good quality dog from a knowledgeable, caring and conscientious breeder if you are planning on purchasing. Do a lot of ‘homework’ by checking all up on the breed as much as you can. Find out the health, temperament and structural issues. A lot of people will make somewhat ignorance based comments about angulation, temperament and stuff like that but basically you want a dog from someone who cares about where that dog goes and who will be concerned with it, willing to take it back if the need arises, and willing to help you and mentor you throughout its life. There are tons of sites regarding the breed and lots of information (and misinformation) out there. Check with the GSDCA site and see about getting breeder referals in your area = not necessarily to get a puppy from but to learn about getting a puppy and the breed from… most good responsible breeders are more than willing to try to help someone learn that is sincerely interested in the breed and doing right by it. A balanced, sound tempered dog with good health and sound structure behind it is what every dog owner wants and needs – you don’t get that by accident. The parent club site will also discuss educational information about the breed. Please do not purchase from some back yard greeder or puppy mill as supporting them simply funds the death of millions of dogs every year. If you don’t plan on purchasing a good quality pet, then maybe contacting GSD rescue in your area would be a great idea. They evaluate and screen the dogs and the prospective homes to make sure that they will be compatible and the dog is altered and checked out and while there might be some issue, you will know about it and how to deal with it up front – which allows you to make an informed decision about being responsible for the dog. Many rescue dogs make great pets! They are already usually out of the puppy stage so they are more easily evaluated and you know what you are getting without going through the puppy stage!

Once you have your pup or dog, you can start with training. If you have never trained a dog successfully before, you might want to locate a good trainer/class now before you get your puppy/dog so you can see how their training is – they need to have a variety of techniques to draw upon and not simply depend upon one as dogs, like people, are different and frankly the dog will be easy to train once YOU are trained and it is the human that takes a lot of time to train properly!! Crossbreed health question…?

In a german shepherd / rottweiler cross.. Would it be more likely to develop conditions common in both breeds, such as hip problems or bloating, or would it be less likely to develop them because it isnt pedigree?

If it is a first generation cross from two purebred parents, then it would have the same likelihood as either of the purebred parents. The only time a “non pedigree” dog will be less prone to genetic disorders is if it is a true “Heinz 57″, and has been crossbred for many generations.

what should i do about the agressive behavior my puppy is exibiting and should i be worried?

i have a 7 week old german shepherd-siberian husky mix who is usually good natured but sometimes if he is busy and i pick him up he will growl at me. The harder i try to get him to stop the more his growling escelates until he is growling and snarling very menicingly (for a 7 week old) and trying to bite. He will, however, stop imediatly if i let him alone or dont struggle agaisnt him. How can i avoid this becoming a major problem when he grows up and is this at all normal or common for puppies at this age or of either of these two breeds?

My dog use to do this. She is a German Shepherd – Lab mix. Mine was doing this as a sign of dominance. She was the head of the litter and wanted to be head of my house hold. One way to establish dominance is look into their eyes until they look away. Also standing above them also shows that you are bigger then them. Mine stopped after she turned 2. I would also take them to obedience classes. You want to show them that you run your house not them.
