Husky German Shepherd Mix Dogs

husky german shepherd mix dogs
What can you tell me about a German Shepherd-Husky mix?

I am going to be getting a puppy whose mom is 100% Husky and the dad is believed to be a Husky-German Shepherd mix. Now I have read up on both breeds and I have had both close friends and family who have had both breeds. I am not sure what to expect though from the mix. If anyone can give me some advice that would be nice. I know a lot about dogs and I have read a lot, but hearing from lots of different types of people with different knowledge covers all over the knowledge spectrum.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for knowing how to spell ShepHERD.

Well, it will exhibit mainly Husky characteristics, so it will shed like crazy, be hard-headed, independent, and be crazy with pent up energy (if not worked and exercised daily).

I hope you are not paying any money other than maybe how much the shots and vet checkup cost.

Here’s what my Husky/German Shepherd mix looks like, though she is more GSD.

My Dog Can Talk, the Story of Charlie, the Talking Dog

(Have you ever known anyone who thought his or her dog could talk?)

My phone rang and awakened me from a really good dream.  Unfortunately, it dissolved with the mists and was gone (the dream, not the phone).  It was forever lost in the ether, like the really good ideas you get when you are going to sleep.  You promise yourself you’ll remember them in the morning, but you never do.  Like that.

It was my brother John, my one and only brother, my boon companion, my fishing buddy, my lifelong friend.

“What the heck are you doing calling me at this hour?” I angrily demanded.  “And on a Saturday to boot!”

“I have something amazing to show you,” he said.

“It can’t wait until the sun is up?  It’s not like it’s fishing season, John.  Unless it’s fishing season there’s no reason on earth to get up this early on a Saturday morning.”

“Just get over here as quick as you can.  This is an emergency,” he said and hung up before I could get more information.

Twenty minutes later, I walked into his kitchen and was greeted by Georgia, his longsuffering wife.  She stood in the kitchen in her bathrobe, with a look of long suffering on her face.  She handed me a steaming cup of coffee and retreated toward the living room.  “Just remember,” she said over her shoulder, “I had nothing to do with this.”

John was seated at the table, his dog Charlie sitting in a chair beside him.  I guess at this point I should give a little more information about John.  He loved dogs and they loved him.  He seemed to be able to communicate with canines just using telepathy.  He could get dogs to do incredible things and seemed to be on their wavelength.  His dogs always seemed to be smarter than other dogs.  Charlie was a good example.  Charlie was a Husky, German Shepherd mix whom John had rescued from the shelter.

Charlie sat at the table and looked over my brother’s shoulder while he read the paper.  In fact, whenever we sat at the kitchen table, Charlie sat in a chair just like a human, with an intelligent look on his face, and seemed to follow the conversation.  He always looked at the speaker and seemed engrossed in the conversation, hanging on every word.  I suspected that he wasn’t as smart as he appeared, but John said he was smarter than he looked and questioned my intelligence.

The first sip of coffee hit my brain and the steam seemed to revive me a little, too.

“Okay, what’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing is wrong,” John said.

“You said it was an emergency,” I said.

“It is, in a way.  I need a witness,” he said.

“Who is suing you?”

“No one is suing me, Bill.  Why do you assume that someone is suing me?” he asked, testily.

“You just said you need a witness,” I said.  “You said it was an emergency.  Why else would you need a witness?”

He looked at Charlie and Charlie looked back at him in that knowing way.  Charlie raised his eyebrows, well what passes for eyebrows on a dog.  Charlie smiled.  Did I mention Charlie could smile?  He did.

“You know,” I said.  “It’s bad enough that you dragged me out of bed at this hour by telling me there was an emergency, when there obviously isn’t, but if you and that dog are going to sit there having your private little joke at my expense, I’m leaving.”

“He’s always been like this in the morning,” John said to Charlie.  They exchanged more knowing looks.

“You should feel honored that you’re the first person we chose to share this with,” John said to me.

“What is it you want to share?” I asked.

John’s face lit up like the kid who just found the pony under the Christmas tree.  “Are you ready for this!” he said and paused for dramatic effect.

I waited.

“Charlie can talk!”  He waited, watching my face for a reaction.

“I told you,” Georgia called from the living room.

“Charlie can talk?” I asked incredulously.

“Yup.”  John grinned at Charlie and then me.  Charlie grinned back.

I immediately thought of the classic cartoon about the guy who finds the frog that can sing and dance, only it won’t sing and dance when anyone is around.  It’s one of my favorite cartoons.

“But he only does it when no one is around?” I asked suspiciously.

“No.  He’ll talk in front of almost anyone,” John said.

I drained my coffee cup and studied Charlie.  He was a nice looking dog and a friendly dog.  I liked Charlie most of the time, except when he got that smug look on his face once in a while.  In our family, dogs are considered family members, but this was stretching it.  Charlie didn’t have a coffee cup to drain.  He just sat and studied me.

“Well, why didn’t you have Charlie call me with the good news this morning?” I asked and didn’t try to hide my sarcasm.

“He hasn’t learned how to use the phone yet,” John said.

“Okay, John, and Charlie,” I said,  “Let’s hear it, speak boy.”

First Charlie looked at me and then he looked at John.

John said, “He’s a little shy and needs a little help to get going sometimes.  It’s better if I ask him questions.”

“Okay, sure, why not?” I said.  I got up and refilled my coffee cup.  That gave me an idea.  Uncle Stan sometimes came by in the morning and he and John had Irish coffee together.  Sometimes they had lots of Irish coffee together.  I didn’t see a whiskey bottle in sight, but you never know.

“Has Uncle Stan been here?” I asked.  “Have you guys been hitting the Irish coffee again?”

“Don’t be ridiculous.  Have a seat and watch this,” John said.

When I was resettled in my seat, John said, “Okay Charlie, how old are you?”

Charlie said, “Er-roo-roo.”  Then he smiled and panted.

“See,” John said and beamed at Charlie like a parent who just watched his seven year old play the Nutcracker Suite on the piano.

“What did he say?” I asked.

“He said five and a half, Bill,” John said, disappointment creeping into his voice.

“Sorry, I missed it.  It sounded like he said er-roo-roo, to me,” I said.

John sighed.  “Okay, Charlie, tell Bill who is president of the United States.”

Charlie said, “Er-roo-roo.”  Then he looked at me and I swear he winked.

“See?” John said.

“Still sounds like er-roo-roo to me,” I said.

“Gee, Bill, will you listen for heaven’s sake!” John said.  “I’m sorry,” he said to Charlie and rolled his eyes.  “Okay boy, what’s five plus five?”

“Er-roo.”

“He never was too good at math,” John explained to me.  “No,” he said to Charlie, “It’s ten, but that was close.”

“John,” I said.  “Everything he says sounds like er-roo-roo.”

“Well, Bill, he’s part German Shepherd.  What do you expect?”

“Eh?” I asked, failing to comprehend.

“He has a little accent,” John explained.

“Accent?”

“German,” John said.  “He has a little German accent.”

“John, why would a dog born and raised in the United States have a German accent?” I asked.

“Maybe he picked it up from his parents,” John said and shrugged.

“Well greyhounds usually say roo roo,” I said.  “He sounds more like a greyhound to me.”

Once again, John grinned proudly.  He said, “Well, I never thought of that.  You know what?  I think you’re right, he’s bi-lingual, too!”

“You really believe your dog can talk, don’t you, John?” I asked.

“What do you mean, I believe it?  Of course I believe it, you heard it yourself,” he said.

“I heard your dog making dog sounds,” I said.

“You should hear him do imitations,” John said.  “Show him, Charlie.”

Charlie said, “Er-roo-roo-roo-er.”

“Well that was certainly different,” I said sarcastically.  “Who was that, John Wayne?”

“Very funny,” John said and chuckled.  “It was the poodle next door.  You can’t understand him because you don’t want to believe a dog can talk and might be as smart as you,” he said in exasperation.

Charlie said, “Er-roo-roo.”

“You’re right, I’m sorry, Charlie,” John said.

“What did he say?” I asked suspiciously.

“Never mind, Bill,” John said.

“Did he just say he was smarter than me?” I demanded.  “I didn’t like the tone of his voice.”

“It doesn’t matter.  I’m sure he didn’t mean it, Bill, he’s just getting frustrated, that’s all.  But this proves one thing doesn’t it?”  John said.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“You understood him that time, didn’t you?”

“Call me when fishing season starts,” I said and headed for the door.

Charlie said, “Er-roo-roo.”

“Same to you, Charlie,” I said and left.

Is it ok to feed my 5 month old Puppy Adult Dog Food?

I have a 5 month old Siberian Husky / German Shepherd mix puppy who is currently 5 months of age and weighs a good 50lbs+. I was feeding him Chicken Soup Adult dog food and just recently switched over to Diamond Lamb and Rice Adult Dog food which he loves. Im kinda concerned that he’s not getting all the nutrients that he needs but he doesnt look or act as if he isnt. He seems like a healthy active happy pup. I can never find the puppy dog food for the brand that I buy for him so I just get the adult dog food.
Ive spoken to someone about it and they told me that its better to just give my dog the adult dog food because he is a large breed and when you feed them puppy food they tend to have bad hips and such.
What should I do?

If he’s handling it OK and is still healthy and energetic, go for it. That is a very good food.

Is it possible for a male dog to have three coat colors?

He is a Siberian Husky German Shepherd mix. His paws are white, his shoulders fade up to brown, and then his back is black. Unlike his litter mates, he has brown eyes, but three colors. One of his litter mates had blue eyes and a brown and white coat. His sister had blue eyes with a black and white coat.

Definitely & not just male dogs. Both genders! There are many tri-coloured mixed breeds & Purebreds. Your dog got its colours from both the GS & The Husky.

What’s a good name for a small German Shepherd/Husky mix male dog?

My friend just adopted a dog from the shelter; he’s about a year old and small for a Shepherd/Husky mix dog but has gorgeous blue eyes.

My friend already has a dog named “Duke” so what’s a good name for this dog? We’re leaning towards “Thor” right now.

I love the name “Thor”. :) :) I vote for that one.

And here are some other names i recommend:::

King
Prince
Ace
Major
Riggs
Dodger
Chrome

*Good Luck and i hope these names help. :)
But i like Thor as well.

Crate training my german shepherd/husky mix…..?

My mom is telling me to crate train him but i dont understand how this will keep him from chewing things up when he is not in his crate and i dont want to put him in every time. should i just get a crate for him to sleep in and not lock him up when we leave or should i not get one at all? please help and if i should explain why. thanks =)

You dog is a mix of two of the most active breeds out there. He chews your stuff up because he is bored. I assume he is still young which only makes matters worse. He has no buisness being locked in a crate. If you care about the animal, spend more time with it. You should take him out for at least 2 hours a day and exercise with him. Not just walk but let him run. When inside, provide lots of dogtoys and play WITH him and the toys, teach him to fetch and such. If the dog is tired out enough he will sleep at night. Without being locked in a crate.

German Shepherd Siberian Husky Mix

german shepherd siberian husky mix
German Shepherd x Husky size, In comparison to A purebred Siberian Husky?

I’m just wondering how big my Siberian Husky is going to get, I had a German Shepherd x Husky mix and had her until she was 13, and I was just wondering how much bigger ( estimated ) she should get. Both are female, my Siberian Husky is 5 months.

Thanks :]
When I said, “just wondering how much bigger she should get, I meant my Siberian husky, not my German shepherd.

This is the standard:
Height: Dogs, 21 to 23 1/2 inches at the withers. Bitches, 20 to 22 inches at the withers.
Weight: Dogs, 45 to 60 pounds. Bitches, 35 to 50 pounds

Siberian Huskies should be near those size guidelines. Although, there are some bad breeders out there breeding giant Siberians, so it all comes down to genetics.

i am getting a german shepherd mixed with siberian husky?

the pup is 2 months old,any insight on german shepherds?and will the extra mix with husky have an effect?thanks!
and how big will it get?roughly?its a male
and its adopted :D

I have a white German Shepherd puppy, 2 of my friends have huskys, and I met my puppies parents. German Shepherd’s temperament (when full breed and of good breeding practices) is generally very affectionate, loyal, smart, and laid back, although they can be hyper as crap when they are little. They can make wonderful family pets, and can get along with cats well if they are introduced as a puppy. They are usually eager to learn and the things you can teach them are endless
as long as you use the right approach, which is why this breed is used so often in the police, fire, and search, and military forces. They can get huge. In fact, my puppies father outweighed me by 15 pounds and I’m 21 years old. Her mother was about 35 pounds lighter and quite a few inches shorter, but she was an abnormally smaller dog.

Huskys are generally more high strung and excited, although I have met some perfectly well behaved/adjusted ones. They are beautiful dogs as well, and with a lot of patience, can become great family pets. Both breeds need a lot of exercising, so prepare to spend time with your dog. It will probably be stunningly cute, especially as a puppy… I wish I could see a picture! It’s ears will more than likely stand up like typical german shepherd dogs since huskys have that trait as well. It will also probably have longer fur than common german shepherds, but I think that only makes them more beautiful!

Both breeds require lots of excercise (as I mentioned before) and lots of socialization as early in life as possible (as long as they are up to date on their shots). Enrolling in PetSmarts puppy class is a great place to start, and let your puppy meet your family, all different ages and races of people, and different dogs as well. The more, the merrier. This allows it to learn to distinguish between normal behavior and suspicious behavior. This is very important if you wish you dog to be in any way protective. It promotes intelligible guarding, instead of a dog that fears any and everyone that knocks on your door or tries to shake your hand. Also, both breeds require you to develop good grooming practices with your dog, and there are several dog books out their that will teach you how to do this correctly. Since both breeds shed, it is important to brush the dog at least once every few days, but don’t think this will be an overwhelming problem. Cat hair is a million times worse than these two breeds of dogs will ever be. :)

I suggest getting several books… all of which I have sitting on my coffee table right now! Don’t even wait until you have your puppy, they will be handy now! Head to your local library (or a bookstore if you feel like it) and grab these, please! They are wonderful:

* Kathy Santo’s Dog Sense (very good book and a surprisingly easy and interesting read!)

* For the love of the dog by Patricia McConnell

* Why does my dog act this way by Stanley Coren

* The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete (great insight to the german shepherd breed, but do not follow all the guidelines of this book religiously, as some are slightly outdated as most people don’t want to have as “dominating” of a relationship with their pet)

Lots of different possibilities in what it may look like:
* White german shepherd – http://www.hoflin.com/images/image2673.gif
* white german shepherd as a puppy – http://www.polarbearpuppies.com/files/puppy_hug.jpg
* Traditional german shepherd dog – http://www.cck9.com/german/index.12.jpg

Any suggestions for a name on this male Husky/German Shepherd mix puppy?

We just recently got this cute husky/german shepherd mix male puppy a week ago and are still stumped on a name! Anyone have any good unconventional/not the average puppy name suggestions?
We are trying to give him a name that doesn’t sound like any common training commands i.e. sit, stay, come, shake, off etc….This little guy also has an older lab mix sister named Lily. below are two pictures that give a pretty good idea of what he looks like. He was shy the first day and has been warming up more each day that goes by, resulting in a little spunky puppy romping around the house!!!

I have a german shepherd/husky male also who is 15 months old. He is very stubborn, but very smart. Learns quickly, and loves to run, run, run (husky trait). Loves the dog park and is very good with other dogs. Loves to play. He needs lots of exercise and needs to keep his mind active. Listens when he wants to, and loves to chase squirrels, rabbits and cats. Shy around people at first but warms up eventually. Just a few things I’ve learned from this mix. He’s a cutie.

How To Prevent A Dog Bite

Dog breeds in general have similar characteristics. Some dog breeds are more likely to kill than others and some breeds are more protective of their masters and physical surrounding than others. There has been a 20 year study to determine which dog breeds are more likely to actually kill human beings. This United States study was done for the years 1979 through 1998.

This study tracks 238 human deaths from dog attacks during a 20 year period. 24% of these attacks involved unrestrained dogs off their owners property. 58% of the deaths involved unrestrained dogs on their owners property. 17% involved restrained dogs on their owners property and less than 1% involved a restrained dog off the owners property.

Some of the conclusions of the study are not suprising. Yes, certain breeds are more likely to kill than others. Yes, deaths from dog attack are quite rare. Also it is sometimes difficult to determine the actual breed of a dog. Communities who try to ban specific dog breeds for public safety will find it difficult to define the parameters of what constitutes that breed.

Several factors interact with the dog to enhance the possibility of a human being attacked by a dog besides the breed of the dog. These factors include heredity, sex, early experience, socialization, training, health, reprodcutive status, quality of ownership and victum behavior. Additionally, this study did not look at intervening variable such as was the dog protecting his owner from serious harm or death or was the dog actually protecting himself from serious harm or death.

Male dogs are 6.2 times more likely to bite then female dogs. Sexually intact dogs, both male and female, are 2.6 more times likely to bite than neutered dogs and chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to bite then unchained dogs.

One suprising conclusion of several studies is the fact that many varieties of dogs have been involved in a fatal human attack for one reason or another. Topping the list of deaths by dog in a twenty year period is the Pit Bull and Pit Bull mix at 66 human deaths. The Rottweiler and Rottweiler mix was responsibe for 39 human deaths. The German Shepherd dog and mix were responsible for 17 human deaths. The Husky type dog was responsible for 15 human deaths as was the Malamute responsible for 12 human deaths. The Chow Chow was responsible for 8 deaths while the Doberman was responsible for 9 human deaths. The Saint Bernard was responsible for 7 human deaths and the Great Dane was also responsible for 7 deaths. The Akita killed 4 people, the Bulldog 2, the Mastiff 2, the Boxer 2 and believe it or not the Labrador Retriever was responsible for 1 death while Lab mixes were responsible for 4 deaths. The following dogs were responsible for killing one human each during these twenty years: The Bullmastiff, Cheasapeake Bay Retriever, West Highland Terrier, Japanese Hunting Dog, Newfoundland, Coonhound, Sheepdog, Rhodesian Ridgeback and cocker Spaniel.

The conclusion that I make from this study is that almost any dog of size can be dangerous, particularly to children. Dogs must be properly trained, supervised, and care must be taken when choosing a breed with the propensity to be aggressive. Most important, keep young children away from male, sexually intact, chained dogs.
