german shepherd arthritis
have german shepherd its 12 years old has arthritis and is on medication prednisolone?

12 year old german shepherd on prednisolone for over 4 months for arthritis started off 4 tablets a day then went to 4 tablets every other day now on 2 tablets once a day dont seem to be helping much but have heard things like long term use has bad side effects, does any one know if this is true or not and if there is any cream you can buy for arthritis in dogs please dont say put her down cos shes brill apart from arthritis and i know people id sooner put down than my dog.

There are alternatives to pred for arthritis inflammation and pain. Check with your vet for Rimadyl, Adequan, and Palaprin6.

How long does a dog have to live after arthritis sets in?

He’s always had a super young spirit, and it’s really sad seeing how stiff he can get because it’s really killing his hyper activity. He doesn’t even look that old! It just became noticeable this month.

We’re going to take him to the vet within the week, but I was wondering how long he has under ideal conditions: if we can get pain relievers and anti-inflammation meds.

We live in Southern California so cold weather isn’t really a big issue. He’s half German Shepherd and half Greyhound; much smaller than a shepherd, and a little larger than a Greyhound. Anyone know how much time I can expect is left in him?

You didn’t really say how old he is, but my german shepherd had severe arthritis in her rear legs for several years. She just passed this January at 10 years of age. She was on pain medication and glucosamine as well as other suppliments for several years and got along really well. During her last six months she got progressively worse. I started getting her weekly shots which also helped her out but then it just didn’t work any more. She couldn’t get up or stand for a long period of time, she started having accidents in the house, and her quality of life went down hill very quickly. Being in the warmer weather will probably help. Just so you know, the pain medication and suppliments are not cheap. I was probably spending about $175 a month on them for her. The weekly shots also (which were vitamins, and some other suppliments) were about $105 a week. But she was worth it to me and it was very sad when she had to be put down. Good luck with her and I hope you have many more years with her.

German Shepherd Fight

german shepherd fight
Will a pit bull win a fight against a german shepherd or rottweiler?

People keep saying that pit bulls have locked jaws because they’ve been know to still have a strong bite onto something when shot or tranquilize. But research disaproves this and say that there’s no locking mechanism in their jaws more than there is on other breeds. Also, Belgian Malinois (similar to shepherds) have been also discovered to have have so called “locked jaws.” Also German shepherds have more bite force.
I don’t dog fight so I don’t want to hear about being cruel and such. Just curious.

There is no such thing as “locking jaws” in ANY BREED.

There IS such a thing as intense DRIVE and TENACITY.

Traits that working breeds like the Pit Bull & Malinois were bred for. Courage, tenacity and a high prey drive. Not to mention a high level of physical strength.

An APBT with these qualities will pursue *any* task with all his might, ignoring pain, intimidation & danger. “Quit” is a foriegn concept to him. This is where the “locking jaw” myth comes from, because many Pit Bulls would fight to the death in the pit.

Back when dog fighting was legal, there was actually a set of “rules” to determine winner vs. loser based on the behavior of the combatting dogs….so that the dogs did not HAVE to fight to the death & could be seperated hopefully before either dog suffered mortal wounds. A “good” pit fighting dog would die before he gave up.

This attitude makes the APBT excel in other LEGAL “jobs” such as weight pulling, hog hunting, livestock work, etc. They are ultra focused, intense and tenacious.

Malinois were bred for an entirely different type of work- originally herding, but nowadays they are more popular as protection dogs. The similar traits- intensity, focus, extreme drive….are just as valuable in a K9 as they are in any other type of working dog.

BTW, any study about dog “jaw pressure” is inherently inaccurate, because there is no way to ensure the dog is *actually* biting with his maxiumum ability.

There’s no point in trying to determine who would “win a fight” between a Pit Bull & any other breed…it’s a bit immature & even if YOU aren’t a dog fighter, it makes people nervous to talk about FELONY CRUELTY on a public Internet forum. They were all bred for different purposes & have different types of drives, instincts and behaviors. It’s like asking, “Would a Basset Hound win a herding competition against a Border Collie.” Pointless to ask, pointless to speculate. Understanding the traits of each breed should be enough.

The Michael Vick Effect. Do Dog Fights Lead to Breed Specific Legislation?

Have you heard of breed specific legislation? Breed specific legislation is the enacting of laws that deal solely with specific dog breeds. For example, in some areas of the world, Pit Bulls are not legal. Other areas of the world call for the Rottweiler to only be allowed on the street while wearing a muzzle. Is breed specific legislation fair?

Breed specific legislation (or BSL) should concern many of you. If you are the owner of a Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, American Staffordshire Terrier, Chow Chow, Presa Canario or other such breed there is a chance that BSL is in the works in your community to limit your ownership rights regarding these breeds. But why does it happen?

If we were to dissect the root cause of BSL I think we would find that it basically boils down to two major sources.

1. Irresponsible dog owners. For those of you who have been following the Michael Vick case as of late you know that their exist dog owners who do insanely stupid things with their dogs. Mike Vick has admitted his role in dog fighting rings and in the brutal killing of several pit bulls. It is a horrible thing that he did. His life will forever be affected thanks to his horrific acts. Unfortunately the lives of many Pit Bulls will be affected as well because this news story plants further evidence in the minds of the public that Pit Bulls are vicious creatures.

The Vick case is simply the latest. We have seen many stories over the years of Pit Bull attacks or Rottweiler maulings. At the root of each case you will find irresponsible dog owners who have created monsters due to lack of socialization, training, and poor breeding practices.

2. Irresponsible media reporting. The media loves to put a sensationalistic story in the news. They rarely get the facts right, however. Recently a story came out from the estate of Hollywood actor, Ving Rhames. It was reported that a caretaker for his estate was brutally killed by the actor’s vicious dogs. Media outlets from around the world picked up the story and reported that this man had been viciously attacked and killed by several of Rhames’ dogs. That just wasn’t the case. A few days later the real story emerged. When animal control arrived on the scene they found the dead man surrounded by dogs. Examination of the body showed superficial scratching of the skin that occurred while the dogs were nosing around and investigating the man. The caretaker had died of a heart attack and the dogs were merely trying to rouse the man.

Did you know that some of the worst breeds for biting children are Poodles and Cocker Spaniels? You won’t hear about that in the news because it is not sensationalistic enough. The reality is that any poorly trained and poorly socialized dog is capable of biting. The media will only report it, however, if the dog in question is of a certain breed.

So is BSL fair? As long as there are irresponsible dog owners I think there need to be laws in place to prevent these animals from doing harm to us and our children. As a public, however, we need to be instrumental in guiding legislation so that the good dog owners with the good dogs are not lumped in with the bad.

Can Your Dog See the Television?

Can your dog see images on the television screen? Yes. Without any doubt in my mind, your dog can see and correctly interpret the images on television. Study after study and people I respect and admire disagree with this opinion.

Bruce Fogle, author of the “Dog’s Mind,” explains in great detail the anatomy of the dog’s eye. It is this anatomy which proves a dog can see no more than the pixels on the TV and these pixels do not form pictures as they do for humans.

Years ago a German Shepherd mix we had rescued began to bound out of bed and seemed to Saturday morning with a mood that made everyone around him to enjoy the morning. As humans, it took us a little while to figure out why Saturdays were so important. We had our theories. Maybe it’s because that was one day when the family was usually home most of the day; school and work behind us. He would join the boys in front of the television and it seemed he might like the noise of cartoons. I would hear him from the other room making verbal noises that varied from whining to growling to outright barking. Thinking the “boys” were playing, I would go about my morning work.

One Saturday completely changed the way I would view dogs and made me want to learn more about them.

We lived in Arizona at the time and one Saturday, I decided to take a break from my chores with the boys. I was surprised when one of them switched channels from cartoons to a show where two local newscasters featured dogs and cats who needed to be adopted. I was curious, but even more so when my sons joined me on the couch leaving Gunner sitting in front of the TV.

His ears stood straight up as the music and introduction for the show began and he started prancing around the room, high-stepping as if he was in a marching band. I had never witnessed this behavior though for my boys it appeared to be old hat.

Gunner settled for the commercial break and then followed a half hour of some of the most entertaining television I have ever seen. Gunner verbally gave his opinion on every animal paraded through the show, though the cats merely received a grudging growl.

The dogs were a different matter and I watched in awe as Gunner put his nose on the TV dog and sometimes it merited a paw. Whenever here was a German Shepherd, however, he became highly agitated, barking loudly. I still don’t know if he liked what he saw or was trying to pick a fight. Now this, again, was before I really started studying dogs as more than mere pets.

Recently my mother shared the story with me about a Beagle named Molly. My mom was at the neighbor’s house watching “Pride and Prejudice”; the dog appeared to be sleeping when a pup appeared in the show. At this point the Beagle came to abrupt attention and ran to the television and put her front paws on her new doggie friend.

It’s important to point out that these were not dogs (or cats) that were barking or making noise of any kind and there certainly was no animal odors being emitted from the TV. Clearly the only sense these dogs had to use was their sight.

I have six German Shepherds; Mouse got her name from her high pitched bark and some of the mannerisms she had when she was still marked as a pup for sale in my kennel. There were homes for eight puppies before Mouse’s litter was born but her mother, Austin, produced 15 puppies. Mouse was the runt. Mouse’s grandfather was a pure black long-coated Schutzhund-lined German Shepherd from Germany. She was the only one born in her litter with long hair though she actually turned into a mid-coat. When she was three months old and still at the kennel, my husband, who helped clean the kennel on his days off fell in love with her and brought her in to join our pack.

Mouse loves “Funniest Home Videos,” from start to finish. She watches everything except the commercials where she loses interest. Cats, rabbits, kangaroos and other animals interest her immensely as do little children. However, only the dogs really get her going. She will put her nose over some of them as if trying to prove her alpha role. On others she appears to be trying to sniff them out. She will growl talk to the dogs.

Keep in mind, there is no barking coming from the TV; there is merely the human commentator telling jokes throughout the show. Sometimes, when a dog runs across the screen, Mouse will run with it and look in back of the television and then out the door as if she is trying to figure out where it went. And just like with Gunner, only the German Shepherds get a boisterous welcome. We plan to get this on camcorder for Youtube in the very near future.

Maybe dogs’ eyes don’t look like ours but here is a thought, though not scientific; maybe their eyes are different from ours and don’t have to share the same qualities in order to see the TV screen.
