Is there any justification for this type of behavior?

A white German Shepherd was found in the river near where I live. It had a concrete block tied to it and the story was on the news last night. It is heartbreaking to see that people can be so callous and uncaring about animals but at the same time it was good to see that so many people in my area are enraged by this act and won’t rest until the culprit is found.

Here’s a link if you really want to watch the newscast.:

Some would call it mental illness, but that is nothing but a cop-out

German Shepherd Corgie mix Snaps Randomly.?

My pup Buddy is about 8 months old. Ive moved into my mothers house and my little brother reached for Buddy’s toy and he snapped at him. They had been playing on the floor together for a good 10 minutes before this happened. Tonight we were on a walk and a neighbor started petting him, then all of a sudden he snapped at her. Hes never actually bitten anyone. It’s Random, hes really good most of the time then out of the blue he’ll snap. I rescued him when he was about 4 months old. The last thing i want to do is to take him back to the shelter. Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Please don’t take him back to the shelter! Spend a little money and lots of time, and work through this with him.

Your dog has hit the age of unpredictability where he is a typical teenager: moody and perhaps becoming aware of new things that are frightening him, only because he is maturing. If he is not neutered, do it immediately. German Shepherds seem to like consistency, so he may be still adjusting to the move. It does sound as though he may be exhibiting some resource guarding. He hasn’t had to share toys or you before you moved, but now someone reached for his toy, and then a neighbor was moving in on you! He feels he has to protect both. You need to take a positive approach and manage things immediately so no one gets hurt, Then, as quick as you can, contact a behaviorist or trainer for help.

Begin working on some positive reinforcement with him. Click and treat so there will be good things for him to think about. Have you been to dog training classes? They are the best way to help you through some of these typical problems. Most dogs have issues of some sort, and your’s may seem quite easy compared to other people’s! I would recommend you enroll him in a class immediately. Instructors will help you understand his behavior and how to address it. Look for someone who is affiliated with the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers), as they will use behavior modification with no physical aversives. Good luck.

The Continuation: Famous People and their PAWpular Dogs – Presidential Pets

This is the continuation of first part of the Famous People and their Pawpular Dogs featuring the Presidential Pets.  Most of the US presidents are pooch fans so now it’s time to meet more of these pets, to know their breeds and know their names.

Calvin Coolidge had a number of dogs as compared to other presidents.  He owned various breeds and gave them cute names.  He had White Collies named Rob Roy and Prudence Prim and he also had a pair of Chow Chows named Tiny Tim and Blackberry.  He also had a couple of Collies which he called Ruby Rouch and Bessie.  Coolidge also loved terriers so he took care of Peter Pan, a Terrier and Paul Pry, an Airedale Terrier.  He had four more pooches known as Calamity Jane, a Shetland Sheepdog; Boston Beans, a Bulldog; King Cole, a German Shepherd; and Palo Alto, a Bird Dog.

These two next former presidents were also big dog fans.  First up is Herbert Hoover who was reported to have had nine dogs of different breeds.  He owned King Tut (Belgian Shepherd), Pat (German Shepherd), Big Ben and Sonnie (Fox Terriers), Glen (Scotch Collie), Yukonan (Eskimo dog), Patrick (Irish Wolfhound), Eaglehurst Gillette (Setter) and Weejie (Norwegian Elkhound).  Next is one of the most popular presidents in US history, Franklin D. Roosevelt.  He had seven four-pawed friends namely Fala (Scottish Terrier), Majora (German Shepherd), Meggie (Scottish Terrier), Winks (Llewellyn Setter), Tiny (Old English Sheepdog), President (Great Dane), and Blaze (Bullmastiff).

Next in line are Harry S. Truman who had two canine friends,  Feller (Cocker Spaniel) and Mike (Irish Terrier); and Dwight Eisenhower who had a Weimaraner called Heidi.  Like the first three presidents mentioned above, John F. Kennedy had a long line of pets too which are mostly dogs.  He had Gaullie (Poodle), Pushinka (mutt), Charlie (Welsh Terrier).  Pushinka and Charlie had four children called Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie, and Streaker.  JFK had three more dogs, Shannon (Irish Cocker Spaniel), Wolf (mutt), and Clipper (German Shepherd).

Moreover, Lyndon Johnson was a beagle lover.  He had four beagles which he fondly called, Him, Her, Edgar and Freckles.  He also had Blanco (White Collie) and Yuki (mongrel). Richard Nixon had four dogs, Vicki (Poodle), Pasha (Terrier), King Timahoe (Irish Setter), and Checkers (Cocker Spaniel) who had a major role in his electoral career.  Gerald Ford had a Golden Retriever called Liberty who then had a pup which he called Misty.  Jimmy Carter was reported to have had Grits (Border Collie) and Lewis Brown (Afghan Hound).

Ronald Reagan had a collection of dogs too. He owned Lucky (Bouvier des Flandres), Rex (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel), Victory (Golden Retriever), Peggy (Irish Setter), Taca (Siberian Husky), and Fuzzy (Belgian Sheepdog).  On the other hand, George H.W. Bush only had one dog, Millie (Springer Spaniel) who just then had puppies.  Same as Bush, Bill Clinton also had one pooch, Buddy, a Chocolate Labrador Retriever.  Unlike his father, George W. Bush had three dogs, two Scottish Terriers named Barney and Miss Beazley, and an English Springer Spaniel named Spot Fetcher.  Lastly, the current president Barack Obama owns Bo, a Portuegese water dog, popularly known as the First Dog of the United States.

Now, we’ve met the presidential dogs.  It’s nice to know that despite their busy schedule in running a nation, these presidents are still able to take time in giving petsafe care to their pets.

Has anyone ever tried the FURminator?

I have a German Shepherd (right now she is a German SHEDDER lol) ANyway, seen this fairly new product called the FURminator. Has anyone here tried it? If so what did you like or dislike? Thanks!

I recently bought one over the summer.
The first time I used it on my BC I got about a grocery bag *full* of his hair. – And he does get brushed daily on top of that too.

I’ve found it to be a very effective tool when used weekly.
The instructions state use once per week. Do not use it more often or it can wreck your dog’s coat.

Separation Anxiety in German Shepherds

A problem often exhibited by German Shepherds is that of separation anxiety. It can be defined as an anxiety disorder, where your dog panics when separated or isolated from you. When you leave to go somewhere, your dog becomes anxious, nervous, and lonely.

When you are away, your German Shepherd wonders where you are, and why you have left. Not being there to look after you can be terribly upsetting to your German Shepherd.

Leave a favourite toy

To help alleviate separation anxiety in german shepherds, you may also want to consider leaving a best-loved toy with your dog, or perhaps a hard rubber toy coated with peanut butter. That will keep her engaged for a while. Your dog will soon come to relate your departure with something positive. A busy dog also has less time to become anxious, and less time to bark all day as well.

See to it that she does not have that “alone” feeling

Before you go, see that the t.v. or radio is left on, in order to give your dog the feeling that there are others near by. Further, provide her with a view of the outside world, by leaving the curtains open.

Change up the routine

Changing up your customary routine can also work well to reduce the amount of separation anxiety in your German Shepherd. When you depart, say nothing. When you arrive back home, say nothing. It is also important to alter the things that you do before you leave. Your dog can connect the phrases and activities with your imminent departure, which will activate anxiety. Make it seem like your leaving is not a huge production. Your German Shepherd is an intelligent animal, who will soon get the impression that when you do depart, you will indeed be back.

Don’t coddle her too much

To stop separation anxiety in German Shepherds, it is also vital to bear in mind that you do not act with too much sympathy when she is crying. As hard as that sounds, actually trying to calm and comfort your dog in such circumstances can do more harm than good, as you are actually substantiating her worries.

Doggie Daycare

Rather than having your dog being distressed all day at home, and risk the chance of dog peeing in the house, she can enjoy merriment with her friends all day. She will be so spent when you bring her home, that you might just get some sleep as well!

Medication

If your dog has a really grievous case of separation anxiety, you should consider looking elsewhere for appropriate treatment. If this occurs, seeing a veterinarian who can assist you with treating your dog for separation anxiety is something you should seriously consider.

my 8 month german shepherd is scared of car sounds or cars over all?

I have a 8 month German shepherd mix with lab n he is really scared of cars =(
we don’t know why but we try talking him on walks and when we get to the main street he wont walk. He is 60 lbs n pushes us away from the street the other day i tried walking him n i sprung my ankle because of this. We cant find an explanation to this does anyone have an idea we would be thankful. Not even my 4 month shih tzu does this.
my dog is very well socialized this dog is friendly n he will socialize with kids and adults i have a 4 month puppy that he gets along well with he has been walked sense he was 2 months i got him when he was 3 weeks the breeders were amazing people they are family so its not about socialized because he has had this problem sense 2 months his never liked cars or car rides

the answer to this is unproper socialization, if you don’t do something right now to fix it with a professional you will end up with an aggressive dog. by improper socialization, you either
1) didn’t socialize him enough as a puppy with “scary” things
2) you pushed him into going somewhere he thinks is scary and you made it a bad association
3) you scared him somehow during his “fear” period, which usually leaves a permanent mark, and timidness.
4) you didn’t get him from a responsible, reputable breeder which results in poor temperament, and shy and timid. a bad breeder also doesn’t socialize it during its first few weeks of life when it is the most crucial.

you should have thought about the extensive socialization a shepherd needs before you got him. it’s a shame how innocent dogs end up in homes like this..because you didn’t do your homework.

Why were my old dogs WAY more protective?

When I was younger my family had a Great Dane and a German Shepherd (talk about a fulll house!) and their names were Hitler and hoit (not sure on the second spelling) they were REALLY protective. This boy came by our house once and Hitler bit him in the arm. Then this one time I was like insanly sick and I couldn’t let them out, and my sister was having a teenage girl fit and she wouldn’t go let them out. So he peed in the floor in our living room and my mom put them down. :(

Now (well two years ago actually) we have to new dogs (Attila and Gangas) of the same breeds and they aren’t as protective. I mean like NOT AT ALL! Like Attila hides under my desk during thunder storms, and he dosen’t seem very manly at all! But then when someone comes to the door he has this really distinct bark that he does idk it confuses the crap out of me. It makes me feel uneasy that one of “my protecters” that has this big scary bark is scared of thunder stroms…

Any explanations?

Well they may mot be as protective becaue you didnt grow up with them. alot of dogs are afraid of thuderstorms. but mst dogs bark at people at the door to alert you that someone is there. it depends on the dog and how oldthey are and how well they nowthe family. if they are still young give hem time. they will get more protective.

Are there dog breeding laws if it’s in the home?

My family wants to breed our German Shepherd dog. We would keep one puppy and sell the others. I know we would have to get them checked out by a veterinarian and have adequate conditions and treatment, but are there any laws prohibiting the breeding/selling in the home or anything like that? I live in Wisconsin and I couldn’t find anything other than for businesses; they need licenses if they have more than 25 puppies sold per year.

•1• WHY does your family want to breed from its German Shepherd Dog?
Click http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Defining_a_GSD_001261993982/ to find out what things lovers of genuine GSDs require before considering using a registered GSD. Because the KCs in Britain, Canada, the USofA are too arrogant to join the FCI (International Federation of Canine Clubs), few of what they register as GSDs are actually worthy of this breed’s name.
What proofs does your bit.ch have that she is breed-worthy?
What specific flaws does she have that need correcting? – have you researched to find 3 or 4 studs that are known to be reliable for correcting those flaws without adding other problems?
Are you able to provide & fund a worthwhile printed-&-signed Guarantee with each pup, accepting financial responsibility for any genetic “unthinkables” that it develops? Do you even KNOW what those “unthinkables” are? (Such as achalasia, allergies, ankylosing spondylitis, brachydactyly, cleft palate, cryptorchidism, degenerative myelopathy, dwarfism, elbow dysplasia, entropion, epilepsy, haemophilia A, hip dysplasia, inguinal hernia, juvenile night blindness, muscular dystrophy, pancreatic insufficiencies, panosteitis, umbilical hernia, von Willebrands Disease, wry mouth, to mention only the main ones that are in the gene pool.) And do you know which of them appear in your bit.ch’s ancestry, which in the possible stud’s ancestry?

•2• Every nation has its own Consumer Protection Law or Puppy Lemon Law. Go to your librarian and ask how to get a photocopy of whatever it is in your country, so that you KNOW what liabilities you incur when you sell a pup. There are also laws empowering the SPCA to do various things, but I doubt that they are likely to affect you.

•3• Every county council & city council has its own Dog Licensing & Control bye-laws. Ring your council’s Dog Control Officer to find out what applies in your area. In my city, for every pup I sell or keep I have to inform my DCO of the name, tattoo & microchip ID, owner’s name & address.

You are unlikely to fall foul of anything in #3, but be sure that you can obey #2. That’s provided that you are able to give highly satisfactory responses to everything in #1, of course.
I point out that people who have to ask their breeding questions HERE, instead of asking their pet’s breeder and the experienced people in the club where they train & compete to prove their pet breed-worthy, NEVER have a breed-worthy pooch – many don’t even have a pooch with KC-registration!
The world isn’t short of pooches. What it IS short of are quality dogs and quality homes for them. So each litter should be produced for a definite reason, such as to produce a reliable guide dog or an S&R dog or even a show-winning dog. And no-one should be allowed to buy a pup until you have personally checked that their family and property are suitable for rearing a well- behaved dog and keeping it alive for at least the next 12 years.

• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser’s Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, worming, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.

• To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

Camping with a dog.?

My and my girlfriend will be going camping in Wisconsin in April with her german sheperd, Caramel. Now it will get a little cold at night, but I don’t want the dog in the tent with us (it’s a small tent). Last year we hung up a tarp and put a blanket down so the dog can sleep out of the wind, and she was ok, if a little unhappy due to chilliness. I know German Shepherds are pretty tough, but is it mean to leave them out in the cold?

IT’S A DOG!!!!!!! If you can camp in a tent then I am sure it’s warm enough for a dog to be outside. A tarp and blanket would make it a doggy club med. It’s like asking if it’s cruel to take your fish swimming.

Limping german shepherd?

I noticed my 16 month German Shepherd limping on his back left paw that would start in the evening, last for about an hour and go away. Today he was fine all day and noticed him limping again but much more severe only toe touching this time.I checked his pads/nails everything seems fine. He does seem like he’s in pain when you touch his back paw. Just wandering if anybody had similar problem with their dog… hate to see him in pain
don’t tell me to take him to the vet it’s common sense and i will when the office is open, not 10 pm (this is not an emergency and i did give him pain medicine)

You know he’s in pain and want to help him, so get him to the vet. There’s all kinds of possibilities for what could be wrong.

Trouble clipping big dog’s nails…?

We have a 4 year old German shepherd mix. He absolutely hates to get his nails clipped. Right now they are getting long and we have to cut them. We’ve tried one of us holding him and the other clipping but it doesn’t work. He squirms his way out and we can’t get a good clip. Should we just take him to a groomer? Won’t they have the same problem?

Sometimes pets do better AWAY from their owners. I’d just take him to the groomer or Vet’s office and let them do it, it’s cheap enough and they will be able to properly restrain the dog. Sometimes for the large breeds it takes 3 or 4 people to restrain and clip the nails (One restraining, one holding the rear so they can’t back up, one holding out the paws and one to actually do the nail clipping. It will save you and your dog stress. Also, if he is really bad, the Vet can prescribe a light sedative that you give the dog (by mouth) 30-60 mins before any stressful situations. I use Acepromazine for my dog who hates when I groom his hair or trim his nails, it really helps take the edge off and de-stresses the situation for all involved. Good luck!

http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/f-german-shepherd-pets-dogs-puppies-for-sale-W0QQisSearchFormZtrueQQCatIdZ126QQKeywordZgermanQ20shepherd

don’t listen to aprioct luver person i think it’s a good idea to buy or adopt a pet from a place or else the people that work their will kill them…they need a family so I personally think that you should get the “Beautiful Black & Tan German Shepherd Puppies” or the “Active young shepherd cross needs new home” they may not be from the puppy mill or that BYB thingy but at least your getting a puppy or dog that acually NEEDS a home. Or you could get a dog from here http://www.wicomicohumane.org/dogs.asp
this is where we got our dog and he is absolutlly perfect!
hope i helped! :) oh and they may not be German Shepards but at least they are a dog that needs a family!

A Lesson I Learned From My First Roommate, a German Shepherd Named Flash

The year was 1969, the year of flower power, peace, and love.  It was also the year that I left home at 16 years old.  I didn’t leave alone.  I took my faithful companion Flash along.  Flash was a very large German Shepherd who had been rescued after suffering terrible abuse as a puppy.  He was kind, stalwart, and loyal.  He was also a very good at being a  German Shepherd.  He knew what was expected of him and followed the rules.

I, on the other hand, was a country bumpkin, still wet behind the ears, so to speak.  We had some fine adventures, but unfortunately, they almost never happened because we were almost killed in our sleep one night.  We all know that sleeping in a room with an open flame or a gas appliance can be dangerous, but I would also like to add another dangerous situation to that list.

Flash and I lived in my 1952 GMC pickup truck.  Are you starting to understand the country bumpkin reference?  We occasionally crashed at a crash pad, but most of the time we preferred our own company and lived like a couple of vagabonds, sleeping wherever we parked.  The original seat of the pickup truck had been removed and two large and comfy bucket seats from a Buick had been installed.  Flash usually slept in the passenger seat and I slept behind the wheel.

For entertainment, other than my harmonica, we had the AM radio in the dash.  We lived off what I could manage to scuffle up, which usually wasn’t much, but we managed.  I dropped in to High School once in a while, mostly out of curiosity and to check in on my more conventional peers.  Most of our days were spent riding the roads, hunting birds, or working part time at the junk yard to make enough money to feed ourselves.

The cooking facilities in a 1952 GMC are non existent, so we ate out of cans and dog food bags.  It was the fall of the year and nights were chilly.  Flash had started out by trying to sleep on top of me, but I would have none of it and forced him to stay on his own side of the cab, but as the nights got colder I began to re-think that policy.  We slept with the windows up and I burrowed deeper into the old, woolen, army blanket I used for warmth.

One night, I parked in the woods off an old road that no one used.  We were near a mill site and the sound of the water over the old dam made a nice backdrop to lull us to sleep.  Before we slept we had our dinner.  I had run out of dog food and planned on getting more in the morning.  I didn’t think it would be a big problem, I’d just share my baked beans with Flash.

Perhaps this would be a good time to discuss the physical attributes of a German Shepherd.  While they are wonderfully sturdy dogs on the outside, German Shepherds are as delicate as a Swiss watch on the inside.  As anyone who has lived with a German Shepherd knows, they have delicate stomachs and must be on a carefully monitored diet, especially if you will be sleeping in a confined space with one.  But this was the time I lived dangerously and I did almost anything that came to mind without a lot of forethought.

We had our meal and snuggled down to sleep, the sound of the falling water like a lullaby in the background.  During the night, I had a dream that I was at the local landfill (we called them dumps back them).  The stench was horrendous and it was such a realistic dream that I could hear the rumbling of trucks and actually smelled the landfill, in fact, it made me physically sick and awakened me from the dream.

I woke coughing and gasping for air.  The cab of the truck was filled with noxious gas. Oh!  The humanity!  Flash, poor soul, was moaning in his sleep and his stomach was making terrible rumbling sounds.  I quickly wound the windows down and I hung my head out the driver’s side window while Flash hung his head out the passenger’s side window.  I don’t know how long we remained like that, but I eventually recovered and we spent the rest of the night sleeping with the windows open.

What I learned from my experience was that German Shepherds, like aerosol cans, should come with a warning label that says, “Warning, contents under pressure.  Use in a well ventilated area.”

Is A German Shepherd Worth It?

I am getting a German Shepherd puppy on Saturday.

I want to make sure its the right dog for me, I am looking for a protective, active, fit dog. The kind of dog you would take a bullit for, and the dog would do the same for you. The kind of dog that is the everything dog, will hike a mountain with you, swim a river with you, and take a nap with you.

Can somebody please confirm that this is the right dog I am thinking of.

And I want a black and tan female shepherd, with the saddle back pattern. How can I tell when I see the puppies.

and yes for those of you who are worried, this is a breeder recomended by the GSD parent club.

Great dogs but they require lots of work.

We have several on our K-9 Search and Rescue Team. I would prefer to get a real German German Sheppard. The AKC standard for the US has the rear sloping down and this often leads to Hip Dysplasia. The German standard is bigger and has a more straight back.
