I am not going to put every dog breed on here that would take way to much time and you should get the idea. Lastly I did mention all but I believe the first dog.

Sporting Group: Curly-Coated Retriever. A long time ago, I read an online journal that chronicled a woman’s endeavors in raising a Curly-Coated Retriever through clicker training. That journal introduced the breed to me, and I guess I just sort of took a liking to them.

Hounding Group: Pharaoh Hound. I think they’re just gorgeous, although the chances of my ever owning one are rather slim as they are drastically inappropriate for my lifestyle. I’ve always fancied owning a female Pharaoh Hound named Phineas, though.

Working Group: Mastiff. They fit my lifestyle quite well, and they’re just plain adorable. They’re affectionate, friendly, mellow, tolerant and patient, and yet they still retain powerful guardian instincts. Plus, once they’ve outgrown their puppy exuberance, they’re just as lazy as I am.

Terrier Group: Airedale Terrier. Not an appropriate companion for me, but they’re handsome, sweet and hardy.

Toy Group: Pug. I genuinely do not care for the appearance of most Pugs, but I have to say that they’re probably one of the only toy breeds I could own — I’m too clumsy and rough for the more delicate ones.

Non-Sporting Group: Standard Poodle. I’m not a fan of most cuts, but I have no qualms with something like the utility clip. They’re just loving, intelligent dogs. (A friend of mine recently lost one of her black standard boys to gastric torsion/dilatation. His name was Dalamar. He was a sweetheart.)

Herding Group: German Shepherd. They’re just intelligent and loving hard workers.. This was a hard one, though, because I do so like Border Collies and rough-coated Collies.

How can I get my German Shepherd cross dog (puppy 9 months) to stop digging in our yard?

We have tried hot sauce, didn’t work. We have tried rubbing her nose in it and spanking her, didn’t work. We have tried to catch her in the act and spank her (& say “no” sternly), didn’t work. The next thing we are going to try is putting water in the holes and sticking her head in that.

But we love our dog and it is really the only flaw she struggles with. We are looking for any assistance in solving this behavioural problem. We don’t have a non-grass/dirt area for her to play on.

Sometimes there are sprays you can find at pet shops to stop dogs from going in a certian area, or from digging. (We got one to keep cats away, spay in on the house plants, and they leave them alone, so obviously, some things like that work, and it’s worth a try.) Otherwise, there are a few things you can do. One, like previously mentioned, exersize him, train him, play with him. German sherpards are very smart dogs, and they get bored easily. you need to keep them stimulated to prevent bad habits from occuring, which, he’s abviously formed one. Just putting a dog out in a backyard with a bone if bound to bore any dog (not that I’m saying that’s what you’ve done), you really have to play with him; whether just play, or training him tricks, or walking him for long walks or runs, wear him out, physically and mentally.
Does he specifically dig in one area? Or all over the yard? Either way, you can try chicken wire, tack that firmly to the ground (so it doesn’t stick up and you can’t trip over it at all, and your dog doesn’t trip when she’s running. This will especially work in a smaller area. put down the chicken wire (cutting around and trees, plants you want to keep, etc.), and put some dirt, or mulch, or terf over it. It means that when your dog goes to dig, she’ll get maybe two swipes of her feet, and she can’t go any further. Doen’t be surprised if she nicks her nails once or twice, bleeds a tiny bit, but she won’t do it after trying a few differnt spots. Or they’re the concrete like someone else mentioned, which is a bit more drastic and expensive than the wire. There’s also those doggie booties, but I doubt, if your dog is a devout digger, that they’d last to long.

What would happen if your dog bit someone elses face?

I had a party a couple hours ago, and we had our dog outside. Our house is fenced in, and my dog was tied up. We put up a sign saying beware of dog. A little girl came into my yard to pet my fully grown male german shepherd. When she touched him, he bit her in the face. Is it fair if I get sued?
No, the child was not a guest. The dog was not unsupervised, and he was sleeping in his doghouse.

The outcome is going to be entirely dependent on two things: what the parent does, and the laws in your state.

Yes, it is absolutely fair. Your dog was not supervised, which makes the incident more than likely your fault. It is entirely reasonable to expect a CHILD to attempt to pet a dog. Said child was an invited guest to your property. You will more than likely be on the hook for this.

If it were me, I would profusely apologize to the family, pay the medical bills and pray you don’t lose your dog.

ETA: The sign doesn’t mean anything. It was a child who approached the dog and was bitten. Could the kid even read yet? If she could, do you think it’s reasonable to expect her to notice it or know what it meant? In many states, children under 7 are not deemed to be capable of any reasoning whatsoever. Even if they provoked the dog, it’s not there fault legally.

Do right by the parents by paying any bills they incurred. You are on the hook for them legally anyway, so just offer to pay them and avoid those legal fees.

What happens to your dog is entirely up to your state. If the child receives medical treatment, which she needs if the skin was broken, the bite will be reported. The city and or state will become involved.

ETA: Ok, I thought the child was a kid of one of the party guests.

If the child wandered into your yard and got bitten, you have a much better chance of winning. The dog was behind a fence and that is reasonable care and control from a legal standpoint.

Brazil – Society & Culture & Religion

The Brazilian culture is without any doubt an extremely diverse Latin American culture. As far as the influences are concerned besides the original indigenous cultures, we should mention Portugal mainly because of the very strong colonial ties with the Portuguese Empire from which Brazil got the language, Catholic religion, the legal system and other cultural traditions. Brazil’s culture derives not only from other European influences but also from some South American, African and also Asian cultures. As you can see, the Brazilian culture is a mix of a variety of cultures spread all over the world.

Brazilians have natural affectionate human warmth, like nothing you have seen before and most of them are very happy and have a rather enthusiastic, spontaneous nature – which they show at every celebration (and their number is quite remarkable). As far as their religion is concerned, experts affirm that Brazil is the largest Roman Catholic country in the entire world but the truth is that you will find a great variety of religious beliefs and practices here. The 2000 Census stated that about 15% of the Brazilian inhabitants identify themselves as being Protestants and approximately 85% of them are Evangelical or Pentecostal. The Lutherans and the Baptists make up the bulk of the remaining Protestants and they are centered in the southern part of Brazil, where the majority of German and northern European immigrants concentrated during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Moving on to the literature aspect of Brazil, the most popular writer is without any doubt Jorge Amado (1912-2002). He was born in Salvador and his writings captured the personality and spirit of Bahias. His most successful novels include: The Violent Land (1944), Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958), Shepherds of the Night (1964) and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966). Another well-known Brazilian writer was Machado de Assis (1839-1908). He was a novelist that had a deep understanding of human relations. In the 20th century, other notables Brazilian writers were born, like: Clarice Lispector, Garciliano Ramos, Cecilia Meireles and others as well.

Are there any organizations in the midwest that could help me train my dog to be a service dog?

I have several autoimmune diseases that sometimes make it difficult to do things or even get out of my bed. I recently got a german shepherd and he seems like he has the right temperament (from my limited knowledge) and learns very quickly. He’s already about a year old…. I’m primarily looking for him to do things like get my medicine bag and bring it to me, get things that I have dropped, and maybe assist me with things like going to the grocery store for a few items. He’s very sweet and likes to be helpful and I’ve heard that shepherds are particularly happy if they have “jobs” to do… I just don’t know where to begin with him…

Separation Anxiety In Dogs

Separation anxiety is one of the most common problems that dogs develop. Its an anxiety disorder, and is defined as a state of intense panic brought on by the dogs isolation or separation from her owner. In other words, when you leave for work in the morning, your dog is plunged into a state of nervous anxiety which intensifies extremely quickly. Dogs are social animals they need plenty of company and social interaction to keep them happy and content. No dog likes to be left alone for long stretches of time, but some dogs do a lot worse than others and these are the ones most prone to separation anxiety. There are a number of contributing causes to the condition.

Some breeds are genetically predisposed towards anxiety and insecurity, which is something you should consider when deciding which breed you are going to go for particularly if you are going to be absent for long stretches of time. A few of these breeds include Weimaraners, Springer Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Airedales. A significant proportion of dogs from shelters develop separation anxiety. Most of these shelter dogs have undergone significant trauma in their lives they have been abandoned by their previous owners and thus they have little trust that their new found owner.

Dogs that were separated from their mothers and siblings too early have been identified as being especially prone to separation anxiety. Puppies from pet stores are a perfect example of this. They are usually taken from their mothers well before the earliest possible age which is 8 weeks, and confined to a small glass box in the pet store for anywhere between a few weeks to two months. This early weaning, coupled with the lack of exercise and affection while in the pet store, is psychologically traumatic for the dog.

Neglect is the number one cause of sepration anxiety for dogs. If you are absent much more than you are present in your dogs life, separation anxiety is pretty much inevitable. Your dog needs your company, affection, and attention in order to be happy and content. The symptoms of separation anxiety are pretty distinctive. Your dog will usually learn to tell when you are about to leave, she wll hear keys jingling, will see you putting on your outdoor clothes, and will become anxious. She may follow you from room to room, whining, trembling, and crying. Some dogs even become aggressive, in an attempt to stop their owners from leaving.

When you have left, the anxious behavior will rapidly worsen and usually will peak within half an hour. She may bark incessantly, scratch and dig at windows and doors, an attempt to escape from confinement and reunite herself with you, chew inappropriate items, even urinate and defecate inside the house. In extreme cases, she might self mutilate by licking or chewing her skin until its raw, or pulling out fur or will engage in obsessive compulsive behaviors, like spinning and tail chasing.

Upon your return, she will be excessively excited, and will leap around you in a frenzy of delight for a protracted period of time more than the 30 seconds to one minute of a happy, well balanced dog. This extended greeting is a source of some misunderstanding without realizing that such a greeting actually signifies the presence of a psychological disorder, some owners actually encourage their dog to get more and more worked up upon their return by fuelling the dogs excitement, encouraging her to leap around, paying her protracted attention, and so on.

If you are behaving in this way with your dog, please stop. I know its tempting and very easy to do, and it seems harmless after all, she is so happy to see you, what harm can it do to return her attention and affection in equal measure? but in actuality, you are just validating her belief that your return is the high point of the day. So she is as happy as Larry when you return but, when its time for you to leave again, her now exaggerated happiness at your presence is under threat, and she gets even more unhappy when you walk out that door. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimize your dogs tendency towards anxiety. Here is a short list of what to do.

Do exercise the heck out of her. Really wear her out, the longer you expect to be away, the more exercise she should get before you leave. For example, if you are leaving for work in the morning, she will probably be by herself for at least four hours and, if you have got a dog walker to take her out mid day instead of coming back yourself, she will not see you, the person she really cares about for at least nine hours. So she needs a good, vigorous walk fifteen to twenty minutes is the absolute minimum here, before you walk out that door. More is even better.

Distract her from her boredom, loneliness, and anxiety by giving her an attractive alternative to pining, pacing, and whining. All dogs love to chew, why not play on this predisposition? Get a couple of marrowbones from the butcher, bake them in the oven for 20 minutes so they go nice and hard and crunchy and so she can not smear marrow all over your furniture, slice them up into chunks of a few inches long, and give her one about 15 minutes before you leave. It will keep her happy and occupied, and will act as a smokescreen for your departure.

When you leave, put the radio on to a soothing station, classical music is ideal, but any station featuring lots of talk shows is also ideal. Keep the volume quite low, and it will calm her down a bit and give her the feeling that she has got company. If at all possible, supply her with a view. If she can see the world going by, thats the next best thing to being out and about in it.

Acclimatize her to your leaving. Taking things nice and slowly, practice getting ready to go, jingle your keys about, put on your coat, and open the door. Then without leaving sit back down and do not go anywhere. Do this until shes not reacting any more. When there are no reaction, give her a treat and lavish praise for being so brave. Next, practice actually walking out the door and returning immediately, again doing this until there are no reaction. Gradually work up, gradually being the operative word here until you are able to leave the house with no signs of stress from her.

Do not act overtly sympathetic when she is crying. Although it sounds very cold hearted, trying to soothe and comfort your dog by patting her and cooing over her is actually one of the worst things you can do. Its essentially validating her concern. Make sure she can not tell that you feel sorry for her, do not ever say, its ok, good girl when she is upset.

Who feeds a grain free food and what kind and who feeds RAW?

Just curious who is out there that feeds a good grain free diet or who feeds raw. I feed a raw diet to my adult dogs but our pups go to their new homes on Taste of the Wild(grain free) since the majority of people don’t want to feed raw. Also if you feed raw do you do prey model or barf? What kind of dogs do you have and are you involved in any dog sports or showing??

My wife and I, along with our German Shepherd, are moving to San Antonio.?

I will commute to Laredo twice a week, so we would like to rent a dog-friendly house about 20 or 30 minutes south of San Antonio. Any suggestions for nice towns near i-35?

Lytle, Natalia, Devine, Pearsall are all along I-35 and not far from San Antonio.

My personal recommendation would be to head out Highway 90 to either Castroville or Hondo and see if you can find a place there.

Why German Shepherds Get The Reputation For Viciousness

The amazing trainability and eagerness to please give German Shepherds both good and bad personalities, as they can be easily trained to do just about anything – including attacking people. German Shepherd dogs worship the people they live with. They need to be active and have a job to do in order to keep them from being destructive. You have to be committed to exercising your German Shepherd dog every day, with a walk and play. They need to be active, or else they get a bit hyperactive. They also need regular trips to the vet for inoculations and check ups. Purebred German Shepherds are more inclined to have genetically caused problems than many other breeds of dog. German Shepherd dogs worship the human beings they either live with or are ordered to protect. They would rather hang out with their people than with other dogs. The approval and affection of their people is vital to their sense of well-being. These are not dogs that like to be alone, chained out in the yard. Any German Shepherd left to this fate will overcompensate with hyperactivity in order to get his people’s attention. Since they are such large and powerful dogs, even playful boisterousness can possibly hurt someone.

German Shepherds excel when given specific jobs to do. This is why they are often one of the first breeds of choice for police dogs, search and rescue dogs, assistance dogs and for working in entertainment. Throughout the centuries, they have also played the roles of sheepherders and draft animals as well as their more familiar roles as guard dogs and military dogs.

A German Shepherd dog needs regular exercise, attention and grooming. Getting them spayed or neutered will also not only lengthen their life span, but also make them more willing to pay attention to you. German Shepherds really are not suitable for apartment life, unless they get a lot of outdoor exercise. They learn to leash train very well (and can often be voice trained), whether their owners are walking, jogging, riding a bike or riding a horse.

Hopefully, armed with this German Shepherd information about their basic personality, you will know if a German Shepherd dog is right for your home and lifestyle. What does a Yorkie German Shepherd mix looks like?

My freshman year of high school, I think in math class me and my friends were talking about how she was going to get a dog. One of my friends, named Mike said he’d had a cousin that had a Yorkie/German Shepherd mix, but all he told me that it was ugly.
Now i’m trying to picture what that dog looked like and how in the world that happened and Is it even possible?

………..Idk just came to my mind.

Not very likely that there IS a Yorky-German shepherd mix. Female Yorkie is too small to breed with male GSD, and couldn’t carry the large pups, Male yorkie, even with help is not anatomically large enough to “lock” with as female GSD so impregnating a female GSD by a Yorky would be virtually impossiple. Artificial insemination is probably the only way it could happen. I think you’d better look for a different mix dot…one where the dogs are closer to the same size.

You can train them yourself. If you want him to be nicer to people, get him around them more. You can do this in public and he will still protect your home. Or, if you want him to be nicer to people in your home, have more people come over. I have a dobie and trained him to be polite but protective. You can do it, it just takes patience.

What should I do with my dog while I’m at work and she’s in a new house?

This weekend my husband and I are moving into our new home. Our house doesn’t have a fenced yard as of now, although that is a top priority as soon as we save enough for one. She’s house trained but has been prone to anxiety when left in strange places, resulting in diherea (sp?). She’s a two year old German Shepherd. I don’t want to tie her out in the yard but I also don’t want a mess in our new house. Any suggestions?
do you mean to leave her in a room behind a closed door? or in the kitchen with a baby gate thing to block off the rest of the house? The time she got diherea, she was closed in my parents bedroom. I don’t really know if that was a result of her anxiety or she was just sick.

Or you can just leave her in one room and put things in there with her that have familiar smells. A blanket or an old piece of clothing with your scent on it.

First of all this is not some question asking about the qualities between both dogs
as i know a lot about both breeds nd hv little experience with both breeds.

Well this question is in between my heart and my mind

My heart says go for the German shepherd as i have loved them since childhood nd still loves them, they are intelligent nd loyal dogs but with problem of shedding nd overprotecting,unnecessary barking, u hv to tie them up wen guest comes over etc. .

but my mind
Says that go for the Labrador as it is more practical dog, everyone loves them, no problem with guest overall a fantastic family pet.

I live in a apartment with a lawn in Delhi with my family of 5.

So please help me in Deciding.

Just to clear something up, Labs shed just as much as Shepherds, trust me.
Labs also suffer from the unecessary barking – both breeds only suffer this from a lack of training, so if you all put the effort in you wont have that problem. The GSD will only be overprotective if raised to be that way, with good socialization there will not be a problem there. Also, I see no reason for a GSD to be tied up when guests come over if you are willing to train the dog. Our GSD was very friendly and sociable. As for the Lab being more practical – what are the reasons for this? Everybody loves them? – afraid not. Many yes, popular yes, but everybody – NO. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes in a dog and which breeds they prefer. A Labrador retriever will have many problems with guests when they arrive if they are not trained, they are boistrous by nature as pups (many breeds are) and although smaller still have strength when bouncing around. Im not saying you should go for any particular breed here, more that you need to look at all dogs in the same category – they require excercise, sensible socialization, boundaries, and general training to be a good dog. What effort you put in is what you will get back. As for apartment living, as long as you will give the dog a good routine with plenty excercise and stimulation that should not be a problem.

I think you need to agree with your family how much grooming you are willing to provide, how much excercise and also how much you are dedicated to training and socializing the dog. Then narrow your choice between them that way. Also there is no way that we can give you a sensible answer online as to which breed to get – which we personally prefer yes, but suitable for you – how can we? we dont know you, your family, your routines, who will be responsible for the dog……only you and your family can make that decision. Perhaps if you all visited a breeder of Labs then a breeder of GSD’s to see what you all think and get info on the dogs – also good to see just what the differences are in the breeds when you come face to face with them entering someone elses home.
