Does anyone know how much german shepherd puppies cost in pounds or shelters?

I want to get a german shepherd puppy, but i need to save up for one. I want to get one from a pound or animal shelter because i am saving a life and it is cheaper. Please help.

You can expect to pay anywhere from about $30-$100 at a shelter. Don’t be fooled by the stereotype–shelters DO have purebreds–a recent study revealed animal shelters have up to 35% purebreds!

3 Easy Steps To German Shepherd Puppy Training

German Shepherd puppy training is easy if you know how. For example the “come-fore” teaches your dog to sit and face you. To teach your dog to do this keep your lead slack when teaching. First issue a firm “Front!” and then walk backward. Also, don’t move the position of your hands on the lead. As the dog moves towards you gather the lead and coax him to come in close. Now while holding the lead tight issue a firm command to “Sit!” Praise your German Shepherd as soon as he does this, give him a treat and issue the command “Stay.” Step back again to heel position. Do this without circling or moving around your dog.

Now, walk backward and keep your lead slack. Issue the command “Front!” Remember not to pull your dog around on a tight lead. The lead is mainly used to get the dog close and make him sit in front of you. Next, step back to heel position and issue command “Front!” Remember, the dog does the turning! All you do is walk backward two or three steps. When your dog turns around, gather the lead up and prompt him to sit. Praise at once. Give him a treat or pat him.

Remember to stand up straight and not to lean forward towards your dog. Hold your hands low and close to your body. Pull the lead in to make the dog sit. Train your German Shepherd to sit straight and squarely on both hips. Hold the leash tight and gently cuff him on whichever hip is out of line. This exercise is important as every obedience exercise includes the “come-fore” position. Therefore, it is important that the German Shepherd puppy training is done correctly at the very beginning else, your dog will get into habit of doing sloppy work.

Are there dog breeding laws if it’s in the home?

My family wants to breed our German Shepherd dog. We would keep one puppy and sell the others. I know we would have to get them checked out by a veterinarian and have adequate conditions and treatment, but are there any laws prohibiting the breeding/selling in the home or anything like that? I live in Wisconsin and I couldn’t find anything other than for businesses; they need licenses if they have more than 25 puppies sold per year.

(Such as achalasia, allergies, ankylosing spondylitis, brachydactyly, cleft palate, cryptorchidism, degenerative myelopathy, dwarfism, elbow dysplasia, entropion, epilepsy, haemophilia A, hip dysplasia, inguinal hernia, juvenile night blindness, muscular dystrophy, pancreatic insufficiencies, panosteitis, umbilical hernia, von Willebrands Disease, wry mouth, to mention only the main ones that are in the gene pool.) And do you know which of them appear in your bit.ch’s ancestry, which in the possible stud’s ancestry?

•2• Every nation has its own Consumer Protection Law or Puppy Lemon Law. Go to your librarian and ask how to get a photocopy of whatever it is in your country, so that you KNOW what liabilities you incur when you sell a pup. There are also laws empowering the SPCA to do various things, but I doubt that they are likely to affect you.

•3• Every county council & city council has its own Dog Licensing & Control bye-laws. Ring your council’s Dog Control Officer to find out what applies in your area. In my city, for every pup I sell or keep I have to inform my DCO of the name, tattoo & microchip ID, owner’s name & address.

You are unlikely to fall foul of anything in #3, but be sure that you can obey #2. That’s provided that you are able to give highly satisfactory responses to everything in #1, of course.
I point out that people who have to ask their breeding questions HERE, instead of asking their pet’s breeder and the experienced people in the club where they train & compete to prove their pet breed-worthy, NEVER have a breed-worthy pooch – many don’t even have a pooch with KC-registration!
The world isn’t short of pooches. What it IS short of are quality dogs and quality homes for them. So each litter should be produced for a definite reason, such as to produce a reliable guide dog or an S&R dog or even a show-winning dog. And no-one should be allowed to buy a pup until you have personally checked that their family and property are suitable for rearing a well- behaved dog and keeping it alive for at least the next 12 years.

Camping with a dog.?

My and my girlfriend will be going camping in Wisconsin in April with her german sheperd, Caramel. Now it will get a little cold at night, but I don’t want the dog in the tent with us (it’s a small tent). Last year we hung up a tarp and put a blanket down so the dog can sleep out of the wind, and she was ok, if a little unhappy due to chilliness. I know German Shepherds are pretty tough, but is it mean to leave them out in the cold?

IT’S A DOG!!!!!!! If you can camp in a tent then I am sure it’s warm enough for a dog to be outside. A tarp and blanket would make it a doggy club med. It’s like asking if it’s cruel to take your fish swimming.

Are all German Shepherd puppies born black?

We are looking forward to getting a German Shepherd and I was doing research on them and noticed that in all the pictures the puppies are black…Do they chance colors as the get older? Or did I just so happen to only see pictures of darker German Shepherds?

Solids are born one solid color and they will stay that way. Saddle/bi-color pups will be born mostly black but you will see color on the cheeks, vent, and lower legs. This will spread as the pup gets older until it achieves its final color at 12-18 months old. Sable puppies are born with a dark dorsal stripe and lighter sides. How much base color vs black shows up on the sides depends on how dark they will be as adults. They will get lighter for the first couple of months as they go through the puppy coat stages. As the adult coat comes in, they will begin to get darker again until they achieve their final coat color at 12-24 months old.

EDIT – I should have mentioned that REALLY dark bi-colors can be born with no markings on face or feet but you WILL see color at the vent. May just be a couple hairs at first but it’ll spread as the pup ages and markings will appear in the normal places later.

My German Shepherd puppy knocks over other puppies and tries to sit and lay on top of them?

Is he just trying to establish that he’s the alpha? He’s 4 months old and does this with smaller dogs.

hes probably trying to tell the other dog he is bigger and better and he owns this land.

Does anyone know anything about the raw diets for dogs? This is new to me and very interesting.?

My friend I met at Oxford University who is also very enthusiastic about animals emailed me this news article and it has gotten my mind turning. I really care about the health of my beloved German Shepherd/Labrador mix Candice. I am currently feeding her Eukanuba large breed which my vet said was excellent.

I absolutely LOVE the raw diet.

My adult dogs get chicken necks, lamb shanks, beef thigh bones, eggs and a loosely chopped selection of broccoli, spinach, apples, oranges, celery, bok choy, carrots and capsicum.

My puppies get minced pork and chicken with the same fruit and vegies as above except they are all minced.

They all get minced heart, liver, brains and tripe once or twice a week too.

I also supplement with TRIO from http://www.vitec.com.au and with Livamol.

Highly recommend it – it’s what they naturally should eat and it’s great for their health, teeth, digestion and coats.

Google ‘raw dog food’ and ‘barf’ and plenty of reading material will come up.

I agree that Ian Billinghurst’s ‘Give Your Dog A Bone’ is great – also check out his other books.

what’s the best way to start a german shepherd in scenting and tracking and are there any good websites/books?

or do you know of any games, training etc to keep their minds occupied, I am unable to take them out for long walks during the day so must keep their superior brains active and free from boredom

First i don’t know many web sites that might help you… but i do know how u can do the scent and tracking!!! <3

get the dog's Favorit treat or toy give it a good smell and let the dog smell it for a while then hide it some here it can see it and just keep doing it, and make at lest each 10 of less or even more hides harder but not to much ._.

Understanding why Beagles Love to Track

Though Beagles today are known primarily as great family pets and lovable lap dogs (even if they’re far too big for you lap), they were bred for another purpose entirely. This is not uncommon; many breeds were initially developed to help in one line of work or another, but have since been bred into the wonderful companions we know and love today.

The skill Beagles were originally bred for was their tracking ability. This breed possess one of the best senses of smell in the entire canine kingdom, and the dogs once excelled at tracking and foraging. Because of this, Beagles were originally used as tracking dogs to aid hunters, hence their trademark howl. Today, Beagles are often used for different types of tracking.

Beagles are often used on search and rescue missions, trained to follow the scent of a missing person or seek out living victims in wreckage after building collapses, fires, or natural disasters. Beagles are also used as cadaver dogs after they have been trained to pick up the scent of decaying human flesh. When used for any of these purposes, Beagles’ impeccable sense of smell helps them to succeed at finding their subjects. Beagles have saved many lives working on rescue missions with their handlers.

Beagles are used to track undocumented and illegal smuggling of agricultural items. This can be more difficult for other breeds, as the smell of fruits and vegetables is not an uncommon smell, even in an airport. However, the properly trained Beagle can sniff out and indicate a smuggler with the greatest of ease. Beagles are so successful at this task that the USDA developed a party of contraband-sniffing dogs called the USDA Beagle Brigade!

Besides detecting illegal plants and foodstuffs, Beagles are frequently used as drug sniffing dogs, sneaking out substances such as marijuana or cocaine on international airline passengers. The Beagle’s highly sensitive nose can lead their law enforcement officer and handler right up to the criminal, without arousing as much fear or suspicion as a larger and more menacing dog like a German Shepherd might.

The Beagle’s sense of scent is so particular and exact that they can pick out the presence of certain kinds of insects. In less glamorous work than law enforcement or rescue missions, Beagles are today and just recently being used to seek out the presence and location of termites in homes. Can you imagine being able to pick out a termite by smell? That is one powerful nose!

Beagles do not only have a fantastic ability to sniff out contraband items or pesky bugs. They are also intelligent, loving, food-motivated dogs that are eager to please. This makes training worlds easier, even training as detailed as coaching a dog to sniff out a tomato from over the border.
