German Shepherds in Alaska?
I’m looking for a stud to breed my shepherd with in Alaska
So, why not ask some of the people that you show with if they’d be interested? You *do* show or compete your dog, right? Otherwise, as wonderful as your dog may be, she really needs to be fixed. Remember, AKC, Champion “lines”, and being a sweetie are not reasons to breed. The only ethical reason is to improve the breed – to try and create a perfect GSD.

Where to post for stud service?
I have a beautiful German Shepherd dog that I want to breed before I get him neutered (he has to hip problems, good bloodlines) Does anybody know any websites or places I can post an ad for stud service around Buffalo, NY region?
he has **NO*** hip problems.
AKC registered with all shots and healthy (sorry for the mistake)
Contact your local parent breed registry.
… although I don’t know how many takers you’re going to get being that he’s probably not AKC, doesn’t have any Champions in shows, and being that he has two hip problems…. but good luck with that!

akc german shepherd standard
If you were an AKC German Shepherd judge…?
What would you judge on? The breed standard, obviously. But so many GSDs in AKC conformation really don’t match up to standard… So, how would you handle that? How could you choose between all of the weak pastern, slope backed, snippy headed, hock walking GSDs?
Also (just for fun), how would you place (1st – 4th place, and very last) the following GSDs (each pic is a different “style” of GSD)? Explain..
1. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gallerypictures/20854.jpg
2. http://www.conadrew.co.uk/URMAConadrew%20Lesko-3137.jpg
3. http://www.austerlitzshepherds.com/austerlitz/pics/pyro.jpg
4. http://www.narniakennels.com/pics/onnet/large/Cora%20stoji.jpg
5. http://www.longviewkennelclub.org/images/2004/sunherding.jpg
6. http://www.jovongsd.com/velvet.jpg
On 7 and 8, UKC allows whites and longcoats.
7. http://www.wgsdca.org/dogs/images/e/eclipses_strength_of_atlas.jpg
8. http://www.atlaskennels.com/images/2006national/yula.jpg
In fact, I’ve had this conversation before with a member of this forum. If I were an AKC GSD judge…I wouldn’t be for long, because the chaos that would ensue when I started DQing and excusing everything in the ring would probably reverberate across the country. I’d never get a GSD entry again.
But it would be hellafun that one time.
Too early, not enough coffee to play the rest of the game.
ADD: Meh, what the heck.
1. #4 – http://www.narniakennels.com/pics/onnet/large/Cora%20stoji.jpg
This is a young dog (b*tch). I like her length of leg and prosternum, although I’d hope she’d develop more through the chest as she aged (not “judge the dog on the day”, but whatever). Decent topline, decent croup. Decent head, although a bit doggy/masculine.
2. #3 – http://www.austerlitzshepherds.com/austerlitz/pics/pyro.jpg
Okay; not a lot of leg, kind of heavy-bodied. Doesn’t really seem have the athleticism of the first dog. Decent head, a little more slop to the croup than I’d like to see.
I’d like to see these first two dogs move.
3. #1. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gallerypictures/20854.jpg
I can tolerate the dog from the withers forward, in terms of proportion and angle. Not keen on the head. The rest is icky.
Excused for lack of merit:
#2 – http://www.conadrew.co.uk/URMAConadrew%20Lesko-3137.jpg
The head looks mastiffy, and lacks breed type. The croup is extreme, and the dog lacks any athleticism.
#5 – http://www.longviewkennelclub.org/images/2004/sunherding.jpg
Hate the snipy little head, hate the depth of chest, hate the croup (although, frankly, it is more tolerable than dogs #1 and #2). And hate Madeline Fish’s silly hair. Gotta be a wig, because if you see it up close, nobody would have the patience to do that every day just to make themselves look like they had a plate on their head.
#6 – http://www.jovongsd.com/velvet.jpg
Hate the head. No prosternum for that huge, deep chest. Hate the croup.
#7/#8 don’t even resemble GSDs – in fact, #8 looks like a coyote mix. Even if they were a different color, they would still lack breed type and merit of any kind.

Will wrote to me about his dog, Lexi, and said:
“Hello Adam. I have purchased your book and DVD set, and my 14
month-old shepherd Lexi and I have made great strides.
We started agility training at six months and thanks to the long
line training, she no longer takes 1 or 2 obstacles and takes
off running. We also are involved in training for show obedience.
Now here’s my question that I need serious help with. I use the
pinch collar during training as I should and she responds
incredibly. The problem I have is when we are in the ring and
she’s wearing AKC standard collar, it’s a whole different story,
like we’ve never trained. She won’t heel the way she does on
collar (she lags behind) and on the handler recall she will
usually blow past me. And obviously there are no corrections
allowed at any AKC event. She’s obviously collar smart, so
please Adam, I need your wisdom.
Thank you in advance. — Will and Lexi.”
Dear Will,
You say you that you are using the pinch collar during training?
Are you training only during specific times of the day or is the
collar on her all the time? Keeping the collar on all day (when
you can supervise her) will allow you to correct her whenever
she does anything wrong, not just when she’s in “training” mode.
Do exercises during the day that aren’t formal show obedience,
but that make her obey, anyway. Work her in different
environments; the driveway, the park, kitchen, neighbor’s yard,
etc…. So that she learns how to listen to you in any situation
with multiple distractions.
Stage an event so it has the feel of an AKC show. Have friends
and family come and even “judge” the show. Perhaps have a few
other well-behaved dogs around doing their exercises. Put her
show collar on as well as the pinch collar. Put her through her
paces and the moment she messes up, give her a correction: this
isn’t an AKC event, this is your event and you say what is and
isn’t allowed

beware german shepherd sign
Beware of dog sign?
I live in Ontario, Canada…..I own a German Shepherd. I was told not to put up “beware of dog” signage cause it admits I own a vicious dog….I was told me specially order a sogn that states “Warning, this property is protected by a professionally trained German Shepherd….Enter at your own risk”…I have one on my front and back door. My shepherd will let people in the house but when they go to leave is when he is trained to back them up into a corner and wait till I get home…if they go to leave he is to use a bite to hold him. Will this make me liable cause if I were a judge and I had a case like this I would tell him he is retarded for going into the house whether or not there was a sign. I have tested my dog and he does his job correctly if someone breaks in….
Well I can understand I must control my pet…but if someone breaks into my house I want my dog to prtect my house….this is how I look at it….you shouldn’t be breaking into my house in the first place.
Hello Autumn. I live in Ohio and we have the exact same law about admitting you have a vicious dog. I completely agree that the first crime is committed when someone breaks in your home, but believe it or not, criminals have actually sued in civil court here in Ohio for damages sustained to them during the commission of a crime and won. The point that was brought out in this is that they are committing a criminal act where we, as home owners, are liable for civil suits for damages. It makes no sense to me, but we have no choice. The criminals are far better versed in laws than the average citizens are. Best of luck to you and I hope you can find this useful

We like to take our pets on daily walks. After all, we are concerned with their health and should want them to remain in good shape. But beware of the unseen health risks to your pet that can be associated with the summer heat.
Presently I have 4 dogs in our kennel that are being watched this month. They range in age and their general health conditions vary, and each must be considered when taking these dogs for their walks.
The current makeup consists of 2 puppies only 3-4 months of age, an 8 year old but overweight German shepherd, and a 13 year old mix breed.
A single walking session shows the effects that summer plays on each dog’s individual condition. The two puppies are young, vibrant and full of energy, and do not hesitate at the prospect of a 20 minute walk through the woods. The 8 year old shepherd and the 13 year old mixed are also looking forward to the same walk.
Within a few moments of walking into the woods, (the woods are about 100 yards from the kennel), you can notice a considerable change form the harsh daily sun to a much cooler shaded area of the woods. At this point each dog is holding their own on this simple and short walk.
At the halfway point, now 10 minutes of walking, we take a momentary rest, more for my sake then that of the dogs. Each dog is panting quite regularly at this stage. None of them look at all tired, and none have stopped to drink any water from my bottle.
Due to a recent rainstorm the night before, we have come across an occasional puddle or two for them to wade in. This has helped them stay a little refreshed.
As we head past the 3-quarter mark of this trail, there is a considerable difference in the overweight shepherd’s desire to lead the pack. At this point, the older 13 year old mixed dog, is actually keeping a stronger pace then the young puppies, even though the puppies have stopped a number of times to rest and take on water.
By the time we reach the stretch of trail back to the kennel area, the fours dogs are showing signs of being both tired and thirsty. The last 10 feet lead straight to a waiting pool filled with fresh cold water. The older dogs take a few moments to grab a quick drink while the puppies play and splash around happily. All four dogs are taking a well deserved rest.
By and far they all show some signs of being tired. But keep this in mind that they each have reacted differently to the same walk, under the same conditions. The puppies did tend to pull more on their leashes, which will cause them to put additional stress on their collars and breathing. The overweight 8 year old, while younger showed more signs of fatigue then the older 13 year old. The mixed dog is not carrying around a lot of excess body fat. The extra weight and fat is putting additional stress on the larger dog’s legs, chest and his heart.
Be careful of walking your pets in the hot summer months. Take then out during the early morning or later evenings when it is cooler. Make sure to take water with you, for the pets and yourself, if you’re going to be walking any kind of long distance. When they get back, give them fresh clean water from a hose or kiddies pool. They have thick fur coats and only cool down through their tongues so please let them relax in the shade and take a break during the walk to make sure they are not getting to overheated.
Be careful to avoid heat strokes or other conditions that can be avoided with a few simple steps. Bottom line is that you should not risk your pet’s health simply because it is the summertime and you went for a walk.
