I am helping my friend re home his german shepherd. I been taking the calls cause my friend is very ill and in the hospital so i want ot make sure i find the perfect home for his dog.
They live in california they are comeing here to UTAH they are driving just to pick up the dog. tonight, and they have a fully fenced in yard they have another german shepherd and they are a real nice famly and they are paying an adoption fee of $250.00 they already went out and bought a blanket kennel toys leash collar and food. do they sound gooD

please help i have a german shepherd puppy that will not stop peeing in the house. she is 4 months old and we have been trying to potty train her since she was 8 weeks old. Everysingle time she comes in the house even after like 3 hrs she will go in a corner and pee in the house three times and when we let her out to go potty in the mornings she will wait by the door and just pee there. Its getting to the point where she can NEVER sleep inside and its to cold at nightimes (i live in utah so its very cold here at night) she will have to sleep in the garage. I know a 4 month old puppy should not be fuilly house broken yet but i should at least see some improvments. and yes she is crate trained

Read up some more on crate training. Leaving the dog outside alone is obviously messing up your training…the dog is still going potty whenever she wants, and not learning how to train her bladder.
This is NOT a problem with the dog, it’s that the grown ups in your house are not committed to training. When she’s indoors, keep her on a leash or in her crate. Be sure she goes outside often, and goes out on a leash that has a human attached to the other end…don’t just tether her outside, or let her run free in the backyard for potty trips…it just makes it harder…take her on a leash to the same spot every time, and stay outside for at least 15 minutes to give her a chance to go. I’m sure you know about feeding schedules, use one.
If your family members have decided to not housetrain the puppy, start looking for a new home for her…the only thing that dog will have to look forward to if living outside, is less years of a miserable, lonely existance, as outside dogs have such shorter lifespans than housedogs.

I fed my German Shepherd Purina Pro Plan for puppies until he was about 1 year old. He is such a picky eater. I have finally found an adult food he’ll eat called Bil Jac. Its a premium food. I used to have to mix his puppy food with canned food and a little hot water to get him to eat. German Shepherds are known to be picky eaters. Also, my dog is a self feeder–eats when he feels like it rather than some dogs who that will keep eating and eating until the food is gone.
As far as ideal weight and size I cant remember what my dogs weight was when he was that age. Your vet will tell you.
My dog is now 2 years old and 80 pounds. I think he’s quite skinny but the vet says he’s at an ideal weight.

Genuine breeders put a huge amount of time & effort into training & competing their dogs to prove them breed-worthy, spend money on whatever health checks are important for that breed, research to find out what good & bad things each ancestor & its siblings in their brood’s pedigree have become known for, ditto the pedigrees of the studs they are considering, pay high stud fees & pay air fares for their bitches to & from the stud that seems the best bet, and as a result are so confident that they supply a printed & signed Guarantee stating what support they will give you should your pup nevertheless manage to inherit a genetic problem that they should have known about.
If you can’t afford a well-bred pooch complete with a Guarantee and telephone support from the breeder, then go see the humane societies and rescue groups – they can’t give you any guarantees, but they usually charge you less for a pooch than you would have to pay for just vaccinations & neutering.
But **NEVER** encourage greedy BYBs and greedy idiots by paying THEM money for their unpredictable offspring of untested low-quality parents.

If you owned a GSD that was certified by the German Shephard Dog Legaue, have you had any of these experiencs with your dog?
-it biting anyone – (family or guests)
-hip problems
-a lot of shedding of fur?
Generally do these dogs have a good tempermant or are they a bit aggressive with visitors to your home? Would they ever bite a family member? Id love to get one but have heard a few bad comments about them. Thanks for your comments

I don’t know what you think you meant by “certified by the German Shephard Dog Legaue” – not even after correcting to “Shepherd” and “League”. It doesn’t help that you don’t state whether you mean the Auckland one, the British one, the New South Wales one, the Yank one, or what. But GSD clubs cannot “certify” ANYTHING. The nearest is that:
• a show judge can sign certificates saying that in his/her opinion this dog and that bit.ch are worthy of becoming champions (but several other judges at other shows have to do the same before the pooch actually becomes a Champion),
• a training judge can sign certificates saying that this dog or bit.ch has qualified for such as an ADX or UDX qualification, or a SchH qualification, or an Obedience Champion title (again, the dog doesn’t become a Champion unless other judges at other trials also sign to that effect).
Instead of asking questions here, you should be:
• attending training classes so that (after the owner has competed training) you can interact with owner & dog, so that you can see for yourself;
• asking in some of the400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to talk about, and how active they are;
• studying http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc and http://www.leabashiba.com/fashion.vs.GSD.htm so that you know what a genuine GSD is required to be like in attitude + behaviour + conformation, plus what some of the deviations look like (a friend in South Carolina went to an important 3-day dog show about 4 years ago, and was horrified to see about a third of the “GSD”s piddling themselves in fright when the judge approached them…)

I have been bitten by some of my GSDs – not deliberately, just that I was in the way when the “1″ in a “3 onto 1″ fight that I was breaking up was trying to lash out in all directions at once. When interfering in a “1 on 1″ fight I can lift one of them off the ground without any attempt being made to bite me. Our son was born when we had an 8 month and a 14 month GSD. The most danger he was in was when a damp nose bumped the elbow of whoever was nursing him – a reminder “Hey – I’m here, and I’d like a fuss too, please”. But when he was old enough to bring friends home to play, all the dogs were either put in their pens or brought inside with us, so that no dog would mistake noisy-boy-play for something that our son needed protecting from.
Back when we had no HD scheme, and while we had an OFA-like “categories” HD scheme, I produced some dysplastic pups, but my last litter with HD in was born back 1983, and wasn’t MYplanning – a sneaky pup mated his mother and 9 weeks later she whelped. Then we persuaded the NZVA to adopt the 0-to-106 BIF-scoring scheme, which is the best & most informative of all the HD schemes.
It does pay to wear fur-coloured clothes and have fur-coloured carpets and a vacuum-cleaner with an electrically-powered carpet sweeper attachment.

If you intend to breed from your puppies and sell them you must wait until the bitches are a minimum of two-years-old. The bitches will only be allowed to produce one litter a year for a maximum of six years.
But you may need a license from your local council, they will explain the terms and conditions of the license. Just go up to your local council and ask or call them up and ask them.

Why is my dog a racist?
My dog doesn’t like black people and he is always trying to chase them. Especially when I am taking him for a walk and a black man is jogging down the road. He is a full grown German Shepherd. And Don’t say it’s because I am a racist because I am not. I just got the dog two months ago from my uncle in Atlanta and he used to be a police dog.
Although my answer was to be a ‘bit different’ when I FIRST read your question…after reading it entirely I am quite sure the ‘true answer’ is that he has spent MOST of his time as a police dog having to ‘corner’ or chase down black people. PLEASE…no one take THIS as a racist answer.
I raised German Shepherds and have called them ‘family’ since I was little and my father trained them in the Marine Corps. They are extremely intelligent. MY ANSWER in no way ‘implies’ that all black people or even a PORTION of them are ‘criminals’ JUST…that this dog has learned by his OWN LIFES EXPERIENCE in Atlanta that ‘blacks are not to be trusted’ ONLY BECAUSE by ‘happenstance’ that WAS his experience!!! Perhaps he patrolled in a mostly black area…so therefore HE WOULD naturally see ‘blacks’ as potential threats…because he was NOT GIVEN THE EXPERIENCE of the same example in a WHITE neighborhood.
There is ALSO the possibility that sometime in his life he SAW a black person ‘do something bad’ to someone he loves OR that a black person TEASED and TAUNTED him. Don’t think that dogs have no ‘memory’ although it MIGHT not be that of an elephant…they DO REMEMBER.
This would be ‘my best guess’ and perhaps you can clarify it by contacting your Uncle. Somewhere along the time of ‘his life’ SOMETHING happened to make him believe BLACKS are ‘bad’ or not to be trusted. Speaking of PEOPLE…aren’t there White people who have had BAD EXPERIENCES who feel the same about black people however ‘irrational’ that may be’ they REMEMBER the person who HARMED them in some way…was black. And for that matter it is the same with BLACK people…how many ‘harbor’ irrational fears and resentments and unreal feelings about WHITE people simply because of how SOME white people harmed them IN SOME WAY???
The dog should be WELL trained in one word or two word commands. With MY DOGS one word they learned was ‘GOOD’ and when they were suspicious of a person who was ‘to be trusted’ I put my hand on the persons chest and VERY FIRMLY said “GOOD” to tell my dog this person was to be considered a FRIEND…not foe.
Part of his training was to be ’suspicious’ and aggressive upon his ‘instincts’ SO he will be! It is also part of his German Shepherd instinct to be ‘aggressive and protective’ that is WHY they make good military and police dogs.
If he is grown, you may NEVER completely ‘convince him’ black people are NOT ALL to be mistrusted, but with YOUR FIRM COMMANDS and TRAINING he should definately learn to OBEY and TRUST your DEMANDS of him.
Ask your Uncle for his ‘command codes’ so that it will make it much easier for you to keep this dog and UNDERSTAND him and keep his TRAINING in line!

You need to start training now. Shepherds are very intelligent and pick up quickly, they’re easily stimulated and willing to learn but please keep in mind to keep training minimal… like 10 minutes at a time a day, they will get bored and go off and do their own thing.
Start potty training now, and make sure you start the dominance “training” now. Don’t spoil him rotten cause hes cute and fun, make sure you establish yourself as the leader, you cant start too early with that.
Talk to your vet about getting him fixed. Even if you think he’d be fun to breed, if you’re not a breeder and don’t do the proper temperament tests, you run a higher risk of having bad pups.

I have been very patient in finding the right dog for me and have finally found the right breeder. Only one problem she is located in Germany. I will be getting a long coat German Shepherd puppy. I have chosen this breeder because she one of few that actually have Schutzund titled parents that are long coated. She has extensively trained all of her dogs and they all have great working drives. Unfortunately US long coat German Shepherd breeders only breed for a calm house temperament.
I have tried researching on the AKC website, but once I click on the link for German Shepherds from Germany the website is completely in German.. Ha so I have no idea what to do. If you have any experience with this I would greatly appreciate some help.

I don’t want to burst your bubble…however, show GSD’s and Long haired GSD’s are regularly imported from Germany with Schutzhund “titles”. The majority (at LEAST 99%) have never actually EARNED the titles. They are “purchased” under the table, because the dogs are not capable of doing the work at a minimum level. There are several companies in Germany that take dogs from the U.S., charge several thousand dollars, and return the dog with titles so they can breed. I have seen MANY of these. It’s as rampant as the Cameroon dog scam. That being said….here’s what you need:
The original pedigree with signature of sale on the back. A Bescheinigung (transfer of ownership). You’ll need to send the pedigree to Sabine Lieb at Verein für Deutsche Shäferhunde. Cost is about $40 and can take 6 to 8 weeks to return to you.
The pedigree, Bescheinigung and front & side (standing) photo must then be sent to AKC. It generally takes them a month to 6 weeks to complete the registration after that.
