will someone tell me how I find info on importing a dog back into the United States with me?

I am a medical student in school in St Lucia (an island in the british west indes). While I have been here in school, I bought a beautiful german shepherd. Initially my plan was to leave him here when I left. However, I have now decided I simply must take him home with me. I live in Texas. How can I go about finding information regarding importing a canine into the US? I heard from a few (rather unreliable sources) that policy for some imports require the animal to be quarantined for up to 6 months before allowing him into the country. I would like to avoid this at all costs.

I do not believe that a quarantine will happen unless your country has a high level of dog illnesses, but fo the most part all that is needed is an updated vacinated record and a current health certificate and they are usuall issued for only 10 days. Now, just for informational purposes for anyone, if you happen to want to go to the Bahamas, their gov’t requires a 24 hour health certificate, and I know, becasue they wanted ot quarantine my K-9 for 10 days, and they lost their idea, either my K-9 cleared or we left on the next plane, and they cleared us. But either way, check with your vet..???

Know any GSD breeders?

Does anyone know any REPUTABLE german shepherd breeders on the west coast? shipping and importing is not an option even tho i know it doesn’t really damage the dog if you do it right.

If your dog carries a white gene, then each pup has a 50% chance of being white. If she doesn’t carry a white gene, then none will be white.

Because white shepherds were frowned upon in the breed standard for so long, many blood lines have bred out the white gene, but there are still some that carry it and those breeders just hid their white pups.

So I guess that’s a 25% chance of any white pups, unless you know that one of her parents was white or something.

Easiest and safest way to prevent fleas?

Two days ago my family and I adopted a pure-bred German Shepherd from a family member’s friend who is a breeder; We were told that if we put garlic in the puppy’s food it will prevent and/or stop fleas, is that true?
Additionally, are there any flea killers (like K9 Advantix) that won’t potentially cause seizures or any harm to dogs?

Garlic is in the onion family, and like onions is toxic to dogs. Some do use it in very small amount to “prevent” fleas but its not very affective. The best way to prevent fleas/ticks are products like K9 Advantix, Frontline, etc… If your dog is healthy, there really is a very low chance of your dog having an adverse reaction, and has a MUCH lower chance of causing problems than what fleas would cause. I would, however, warn against using the over the counter flea products such as Hartz because they have a higher chance of causing a reaction like chemical burns on the dog. They actually have a higher dose of the poison than the prescription products do.

ETA: Garlic will do nothing for worms. Dogs and cats get worms for either mosquito bites or from the feces of animals who have worms.

Neopolitan Mastiff?

Hi!
My husband and I own a two year old German Shepherd and are ready to add to our family. We have large breed experience and have been considering either an Irish Wolfhound or a Neo Mastiff. I already asked a similar question about the I.W. so now I ask…. Has anyone owned a Neopolitan Mastiff? If so, can you tell me about your experiences with the breed? Pros and cons? Know any breeders in the Ohio/Penn/W. Virginia area? Thanks!
to answer your question i HAVE researched the irish wolfhounds, but not the mastiffs yet. we just decided to consider them a few days ago, hope that helps!

It’s actually Neapolitan Mastiff and they are great dogs. The national breed club http://www.neapolitan.org/ has a fantastic site that they link to – the rescue group. http://www.neorescue.net/abouttheneo.php?PHPSESSID=0ce6c437d24d080f3a074c9eace831bc I’m not pushing rescue, it’s just that this site has real info on the breed and tons of great stuff.

They drool a ton, from bad breeders they can have some pretty serious health defects, and they are not incredibly active dogs as adults (unless pushed). They are also true mastiffs, meaning they are stubborn and thick headed.

They are very very different from an Irish Wolfhound. Have you done homework on the breeds yet? Other than both being big, they are polar opposites in many regards. Irish Wolfhounds are TRUE sighthounds.
They are active, have ahigh prey drive, and can never ever be trusted off leash. Extra special care needs to be taken with sighthounds because of their chase desire. A leash not held correctly and a cat across the street is a recipe for disaster.
They also tend to be very very sensitive to correction and punishment – and to medications and anesthesia.

Should you choose to call “mark” below, read this first: http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html so that you can recognize a good breeder. I didn’t see a “mark” on the breeder referral list, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not good. Just beware.

Does anyone know of a sheep herding club or association in central Texas?

I have 2 German Shepherds and I would like to take them to some sort of herding class so they can experience it.

End Gate Ranch is a 200 acre ranch located in south Dallas county. It has been involved for 30 years with herding dog development and a cattle improvement breeding program.

The purpose of the herding dog program is to promote, preserve and develop the herding skills inherent in all herding dog breeds, registered or unregistered, and to demonstrate that they can perform the useful function of livestock management for which they were originally bred.

The facilities are designed for progressive opportunities for exposure and training with various livestock. After the herding dog and handler have shown basic command and control capability, advancement to the next skill level is encouraged.

Recognition of skill is obtained at competitive herding dog trials.

5 German Shepherd Training Tips

German Shepherd training is usually not that hard because these animals were created to take commands and be very loyal to their owners.

This breed was developed in the 1800’s after selective breeding by local communities to have a dog that could herd sheep, and also be a breed that had a lot of intelligence speed and strength.

If you’re going to do German shepherd training soon, these five pointers below will help you get the best results possible.

1.  Your dog will learn optimally if you keep training sessions to short periods of no longer than 15 minutes. If you do want to teach a dog longer than this in the same day, it’s best to break it up into multiple short periods.

2.  When it comes to teaching your new puppy, make sure that children are also a part of the training. Your new pet should learn that it needs to take commands from everyone in the household no matter how small they are.

3.  When it comes to giving rewards to your pet, try to keep any food treats to a very small size. This helps to not only keep your pet from becoming obese, it can also helps motivate them to work longer for you.

4.  The best way to teach a new pet is to start with the basic commands. These include commands like sit, stay, and fetch. While these might not seem like exciting tricks, they are the bedrock for more advanced commands.

5.  If you want to get the best results from your efforts, try to  keep a regular schedule when it comes to training your dog. This way your dog is regularly reinforced with the teachings you’re doing, and it will not forget them.

German Shepherd training is not very difficult. If you find yourself having trouble, it is likely because you are not experienced enough as a trainer.

There are many ways to make yourself a better teacher for your pet. Whether this involves hiring a professional, or reading more books, there are lots of resources out there designed to help you.

how do i prevent our dogs (german shepherd) from digging our plants and everything in our yard?

we have three dogs, a mini pin and two german shepherds. the female shepherd is already two years old and quite behaved, the male, a young 9 month old, is so hyper. he has been digging around the yard; eating my plants, and gnawing on everything. i tried giving him all sorts of toys to nibble but he eventually gets back to my plants. please help

My husband thought I was crazy, but it was the only thing that worked.

German Shepherd Dogs

German Shepherd dogs are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. They are a solid, sturdy and very muscular dog. Their strength and agility, combined with their superior mental capacity, allow them to be trained in many special areas of expertise.

Service dogs are specially bred, and must be hand picked from a group of dogs that show superior intelligence. After being carefully chosen, the pup then moves on to a year or so of rigorous training, before being matched up with a new, compatible handicapped owner. There are so many different things that a German Shepherd can be trained to do, that if you were to get a puppy, you would probably be confused on where to start. Make sure that you get a good, comprehensive and in depth book, specializing in German Shepherds, to be your guide.

Where can i buy a purebred German Shepherd puppy in Houston Texas?

i want a German Shepherd puppy. preferably not older than 8 weeks old. I live in Houston texas and i dont want it to be TOO long a drive away, but a few hours would be okay.i also want a purebreed. I’m thinking of purchasing from Von Der Otto Kennels becuase they’re expecting a litter pretty soon….oh and only male…thnx!=)

dont use sites like puppyfind.. you will find nothing but puppy mills and back yard breeders there.

8 weeks is the youngest you can get.. no one in their right mind would sell a pup any younger.. many reputable breeders actually keep their pups until 10-12 weeks of age!

German Shepherd AKC Name Help!!?

My german shepherd is in the process of being akc registered and I’m having trouble with the akc name. Her name is Khloe. I kind of wanted to incorporate Cleopatra- reason being that my mom wanted to name her that because she has what looks likes eyeliner under her eyes like Cleopatra. But for short we would call her Cleo but I couldn’t get used to calling her Cleo, so i started calling her Chloe but changed the spelling. Then i tried Khloepatra, and thought that sounded kind of stupid. I want her last name to be Von Battenburg. But it’s the first name I’m having a hard time with. So if you could help me, that would be awesome.

Even if you don’t call her Cleo you could still use Cleopatra in her name. Many dogs’ call names have nothing to do with their registered names. You could do something like “Cleopatra Von Battenburg” to make it simple and just call her Khloe. I really like the way you spelled Khloe – very cute and creative!

Where can I go in the San Francisco Bay Area to buy/adopt a Siberian Husky puppy?

I have always wanted a Husky and I am experienced with dogs.
I had a German Shepherd that lived for 14 years and died quite a while back and I think I am ready for another dog.

Look for a Bay Area rescue group or try the SFSPCA. You can ‘request’ a special breed and age and the SFSPCA will contact you when one comes in.

You are going to have a problem with a dog that big in an apartment. Why not look for a small duplex or house. They are not too expensive if you get out from San Francisco a bit. Some place like Concord is not too expensive and you are still on the BART line.
