I just found Japanese Beetles in my garden! Help?

I have a 10′x10′ flower garden over the grave of my German Shepherd who passed away in April. I filled it with knockout roses, general rose bushes, and an assortment of perennials. It has started to flourish just this month, but I have noticed parts of the garden dying, for which I blamed the neighbors cat. Today during watering, I found five Japanese Beetles on one rose bud. Two of them were mating.

I live in Southwest Missouri. What can I do to keep them from destroying my dog’s memorial?

Spray them with a mixture of about 10 parts water to 1 or 2 parts alcohol with a couple of drops of soap like Dawn in a glass of water. This mixture works on other bugs both in the garden and on delicate house plants.You can use commercial sprays that are effective. I’m an organic gardener so I avoid those. In a space that size I take a container and put some water in it, I add a little Dawn soap and knock the beetles into it. It kills them dead in no time. By the third day it stinks so I change water and soap.

I also found that nothing draws them away from the garden like a fence full of wild grape vines. They just love them.. About the only thing I’ve found that they like better is my red raspberries. Those spores they sell to kill the grubs takes at least three or four year to make a difference. Sometimes that doesn’t work. I always have my pail of water and soap with me when I make my rounds of the garden. They seem to like warm sunny places where the fresh leaves are growing as their favorite spots.

the guy doing the commentary for the Program said this is a special type of german shepherd , i just thought , it just a big sable german shepherd .
as the program continued it turned out that the police GSD was in fact a saarloos wolfhond cross german shepherd
how can this be legal for the police to you part wild , part wolfdogs , when here in the uk we have the dangerous dogs act ,
the officer said the dog enjoy’s his work , with a twinkle in his eye , what he was really saying , this police dog likes to bite.

All dogs are different. Wolf dog hybrids can be aloof and skitish, but there are extensive tests done for ability, training potential, etc.

Remember, it’s a team effort. The dog is only as good as his training and his handler. Sounds to me like someone wasn’t doing their job…and I don’t mean the K-9

K9 Handling in the Police Force?

I am working on my career planning stuff right now, and I need a list of sites that give information about Police Force K9 handling. (I am going into the Air Force with the intentions of being a K9 handler as a MP) and because I “can’t go to college” to be trained for that while in the Air Force, I have to come up with questions and answers about K9 handling. And so far all the sites that I have found are about importing GSDs (German Shepherd Dogs) and getting Belgian Malinois’ for police work, and where to go to buy them for your force, nothing about the training of the handler’s or anything. And I need to find out how I can interview some of the K9 handlers. I already have written an Email to the Sacramento PD (Where I live) but I need some more -in depth- information that I am having a hard time trying to provide.

I remember reading about J. Allen Boone who was given the job of caring for Strongheart, a magnificent German import German Shepherd trained for police and movie work in his book “Kinship With All Life”….has anyone else here read this book?

I have a 7 Month Old German Shepherd male, and i was wondering if it was still possible to train him to attack on command, speak on command etc?
I have trained him to sit, follow, just general stuff, which hes ok at.

You DON’T train to attack command….it’s very unlikely the dog would do it anyway. One in a few hundred thousand dogs will attack ON COMMAND …unprovoked. The dog will ALWAYS know when there is a threat before you…do you want him to come to you and ask for the “command”?
Obedience and tricks are perfect timing…start now. For “PROTECTION” training, go to a trainer to have him evaluated at 12-14 months. Until that time, make sure he is COMPLETELY social…do not encourage any aggressive behavior. You CAN NOT train protection yourself. His lineage will be a good indication of whether or not he’ll be able to do the protection work.

German Shepherd Schutzhund training courses is a activity that established in Germany noisy . twentieth century in order to test a variety of German Shepherd Schutzhund types for future use as police dogs. Protection – Dogs are often trained to protect, as may be the case with police dogs, attack dogs, and guard dogs. They are trained with specific commands to both identify a threat and attack that threat. Alternatively, they could be trained to protect a specific object or person without commands.

The quality of Schutzhund is to provide a dog with a very highly specific set of skills they can use to complete a given task quickly and efficiently. Dogs in official training courses programs might complete training courses for a price of 20% or lower. However, Schutzhund dog training can be just as effective as an obedience regimen for dog owners at home.

If you’re considering using Schutzhund to train your own dog, make sure you research the a range of training classes based on their success rates and the underlying philosophies used.

Oh my god she’s adorable! She’ll probably get darker but I don’t think a dog’s coat color changes that drastically. My pup used to be lighter and his black muzzle was more defined in color than it is now:

will someone tell me how I find info on importing a dog back into the United States with me?

I am a medical student in school in St Lucia (an island in the british west indes). While I have been here in school, I bought a beautiful german shepherd. Initially my plan was to leave him here when I left. However, I have now decided I simply must take him home with me. I live in Texas. How can I go about finding information regarding importing a canine into the US? I heard from a few (rather unreliable sources) that policy for some imports require the animal to be quarantined for up to 6 months before allowing him into the country. I would like to avoid this at all costs.

I do not believe that a quarantine will happen unless your country has a high level of dog illnesses, but fo the most part all that is needed is an updated vacinated record and a current health certificate and they are usuall issued for only 10 days. Now, just for informational purposes for anyone, if you happen to want to go to the Bahamas, their gov’t requires a 24 hour health certificate, and I know, becasue they wanted ot quarantine my K-9 for 10 days, and they lost their idea, either my K-9 cleared or we left on the next plane, and they cleared us. But either way, check with your vet..???

Does anyone know any REPUTABLE german shepherd breeders on the west coast? shipping and importing is not an option even tho i know it doesn’t really damage the dog if you do it right.

How can I train my german shepherd to be calm?

Whenever I go to play with my dog, she always jumps on me and steps all over me and since she is so big and i am so PUNY it’s not very good. I don’t know how to make her calm! I am so sick of it because I love my german shepherd head to tail but if she doesn’t behave, my dad makes me put her into her crate?

An obedience class would definitely help. Also, because GSDs are working dogs, they need a “job” to do. You can do training exercises with her in the yard that will be fun for you both. Teach her how to fetch & return something to you, like a tug toy. Give her a small treat as a reward, for sitting, staying, and returning the toy to you. She’ll enjoy it, and will be learning at the same time.

Regular exercise like long leash walks and running after a toy inside of a secure fenced area will help make her calmer–GSDs need exercise every day. After she’s been through obedience classes, you could look into agility classes, herding classes, etc.
