Which name do you like better for a female German Shepherd Dog? Rylie or Chloe?

I got a german shepherd puppy 3 weeks ago. I was calling her Rylie…But it just doesn’t seem feminine enough. My mom wants me to name her Chloe, and she and my sister now call her Chloe so I’ve tried to call her that and it’s just too frilly–it’s more of a labrador retriever name than a GSD. She’s elegant,regal and yet goofy in her own way. So…which name do you like better for a shepherd? I got her an i.d tag w/ Rylie on it, but I can get her another one if I decide to change her name. Rylie or Chloe?

Training A Labrador Guide Dog

Dogs are used the world over for many tasks; sheep herding, drug detection, crowd control, mountain-rescue, to name just a few; each species adapted to suit its own, unique in-bred skills. It is Mankind’s bond to his dog that makes their relationship so special. One of the most amazing examples of man and dog working together must surely be that of a Guide Dog leading a blind, or visually impaired person along our streets.

Although Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds can also be used for this task, the Labrador epitomises the traditional guide dog for the blind. So, how does this relationship begin? It is not so much the case of training a guide dog, but training the relationship between man and dog.

The first stage in a puppy’s development into becoming a guide dog is to make sure that it is not easily frightened or of a nervous disposition – they must be good-natured and naturally calm. This is done with the aid of volunteers who look after the puppies up until they are about a year old. In this time they will introduce the young dogs to the world around them, and teach them basic skills in obedience.

At the end of this period of introduction, the volunteer will pass the puppy on to the care of one of several Guide Dog Training schools. A professional trainer will then teach the dog the necessary skills that are required for the job of leading the blind and visually impaired; skills that include walking in a straight line, stopping at the curb and maneuvering around obstructions. This training period will lasts between six to eight months.

Assuming the dog has met the required skills, (not all of them do) the next task is to then pair up the dog with its new owner. There follows a period of intense training to forge a bond between man and animal – either within the training facility or at the owner’s home. The relationship will have to be strong between them as, outside the home, the blind person will be totally dependent upon his dog’s skill to navigate the various obstacles along the pedestrian highway. Unlike pets, guide dogs are service animals – in charge of the welfare of their keeper – as such they are not to be approached, fed or handled without the express permission of their owner. Even though the dog may appear friendly, its training is such that it may be discouraged to react to other people, in favour of its owner.

A guide dog’s life is demanding a strenuous and, as such, has a working life of about seven years. At this point the animal will usually be retired out of service. This means either being kept by the owner or handed back to the training school, which will endeavor to find it a new and loving home.

As most people know, dogs are not only loving pets and companions. Many dogs also serve important functions in the community as well. Dogs help the police and military search for bombs, drugs and people. Dogs help blind people make their way through the world. Dogs work on farms and pastures and serve their masters as tough and militant guards and even soldiers. This article will discuss which breeds thrive in different tasks and why.

The organization Guide Dogs of America relies on three pure breeds to use as guide dogs for the blind. The majority of the guide dogs are Labrador Retrievers, followed by Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. These breeds are chosen based on three behavioral characteristics: willingness, health and temperament. These dogs possess the intelligence and patience to assist their owners in the best way possible. They are robust, fit and well-suited to the task. They are also loyal and love people, which helps them stay focused in crowded situations. All three of these breeds also exhibit a variety of sizes, making them easier to pair with different owners.

The top three guard dog breeds are the Bullmastiff, Doberman and the Rottweiler. Bullmastiffs, which are 40% Bulldog and 60% Mastiff are loyal, courageous and very strong. These dogs have an inherent protective instinct and will bite or wrestle intruders to the ground. Dobermans are exceptionally intelligent dogs that vary in temperament, but generally they will not hesitate to attack if they feel their family is in danger. Rottweilers are also intelligent dogs, considered ninth most intelligent breed in the world. Rottweilers are calm and loving with their families, but also fiercely protective. They are very strong, have great stamina and are resistant to pain.

Depending on the task, many different breeds are used for police work. However, the most common police dog is the German Shepherd. The key attributes for an effective police dog are intelligence, strength, aggression and sense of smell. Most police German Shepherds are males, left unneutered to maintain their natural aggression and strength. German shepherds also possess a highly acute sense of smell and are very intelligent and trainable, making them excellent bomb and drug sniffing dogs as well as search and rescue dogs.

There are over a dozen common and well-qualified herding breeds, but the most well-known and best regarded of those breeds is the Border Collie. Border Collies are widely considered to be the smartest dogs in the world. Because of this intelligence, Border Collies demand difficult tasks. They are also highly agile and fast dogs, and their natural herding instinct makes them perfect farm dogs.
Border Collies are also renowned for their performance in athletic competitions, and their powerful sense of smell makes them excellent search and rescue dogs.

As you can see, dogs are not just the loving, happy pets we often consider them to be. The breeds mentioned above are only a few of many types of dogs humans have bred throughout history to serve them. Though any of the breeds will make excellent pets, remember the purpose they were created to serve. Knowing what your dogs’ inherent instincts and abilities are will make you a better, more informed dog owner.

Is My German Shepherd Jealous ?

I have two outdoor dogs a labrador retriever and a German shepherd,, well everytime i pet my Lab my German Shepherd bites the hell out of my lab what is the problem?

When you pet your lab, it acts submissive and happy because that is what happy dogs do when their leader pets and praises them. What is most likely happening is that your Shepherd is mixing up the signals and seeing this exchange of love between you and the Lab as you Dominating over it and it is taking the opportunity to get its licks in and re-assert its dominance over the other dog. It is kinda like a cowardly bully that never picks the fight but always jumps in after one is started.
You are not doing anything wrong. You are going to have to divert your Shepherds attention when you are petting your lab. One of the many tricks that you can use is to go to your petstore and get 4 Kongs. Take two of the kongs and put a treat or cheese or P.Butter inside. Then when you go outside you toss one of them for the Shepherd and when it runs off to get it you give the other one to the Lab and pet and love on the lab while it is sitting with you. Meanwhile the Shepherd is happy and occupied with its prize and is not obsessed with dominating the other dog.
But why the two other kongs? That way you don’t have to take them away form the dogs when you go inside. Next time you go out… just grab the two other loaded kongs and do the smae thing a collect the ones that you used last time on your way back in. Make sense?
This is just one of several little tricks that you can use.
I would very much suggest that you call a good dog trainer in your area that can give you some hands on tricks and tips so that you can put a permanant stop to this unwanted behavior.

The Toy dogs are small companion breeds that include the Toy Poodles, Chihuahua,Toy Spaniels, Miniature Pinscher and others. The Toy Group make up for their small size with their big personalities.These are well suited for older or disabled people, because they are easier to look after, as they eat less and need less exercise. Usually, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less tall at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than the female, but the difference is generally small.This is referred to as breeding true

The Non-Sporting dogs that do not fit into any of the other groups, are usually larger than Toy dogs. These include the Miniature Poodles, Boston Terrier, Bichon Frises and others.

For those who suffer from allergies, a Hypoallergenic dog is a breed that might enable them to have a pet in their home. Some dog breeds have been considered as hypoallergenic, such as the Yorkshire Terrier and the Afghan Hound whose is the same pH as human hair, therefore, creating no threat.
