Grooming Your German Shepherd the Way the Professionals Do, Part 1

Taking care of the basic health and grooming needs of your pet can be expensive if taken to a professional, but most of the things a professional does you can do yourself. For this example we’re using the same type of dog that I have, a German Shepherd Dog.

It’s important to remember that most unique breeds will have very different grooming and health requirements. Doing grooming yourself will cause much less stress to your dog, and in some cases they will even learn to enjoy it.

My German Shepherd looks forward to grooming (She knows that it is time for plenty of rub downs, playing, and treats.) You want to make sure you praise and reward your dog for being good while being groomed – you want to make it an experience that they look forward to.

It is true that German Shepherds have a “double coat”. This means they have that nice thick layer of outer fur that’s longer and more coarse and a softer fluffy, downy layer of fur beneath.

Flying Fur

While German Shepherds shed year round, shedding becomes really noticeable twice a year when they “blow their coat”. This is where they basically shed most of the summer, (then later on winter) coat over the course of a week or so.

To keep this from being a complete mess, you can groom more frequently and make sure that when grooming you get deep into the undercoat as well. Getting into the undercoat with a standard brush proves very challenging, it’s better to get something that’s specifically designed to clear up the undercoat like an Undercoat Rake.

Grooming Like a Pro

When grooming, you should begin at the head of your German Shepherd and brush back to the coat & tail with a slicker brush. You should then comb through the coat with a metal comb to remove any other loose hair. If you want you can go over the entire coat with a rubber curry brush. (This will help make the coat shinier and also give your dog a good rubdown)

If it’s shedding season, you will also want to use a shedding blade, (With this tool you groom from the rear to the front). It is very important to know the proper use of a shedding blade, and your groomer can help you with tips for proper use and safety. You should never use a shedding blade if you’re not 100% sure of the proper technique.

Grooming tips for your German Shepherds include many different steps, all of which are very important. And grooming is much more important than many people believe it to be. It’s true, German Shepherds are relatively maintenance free compared to many dog breeds but your GSD will need a little grooming TLC occasionally as well. Please do not neglect this area of German Shepherd ownership.

What are good names for a male German Shepherd?

I want an uncomman name. A name with a good meaning, like from 1800’s or something.

Getting a New Puppy? Consider the Super Intelligent German Shepherd

If you are considering getting a new puppy or a dog, especially one of the larger dog breeds, you may want to consider getting a German Shepherd. They are one of the most popular breeds in the world, beautiful, highly intelligent, and easy to train. They are best known to many as working dogs, working with the police department, military, and as service dogs to the blind.

The average life span of a German Shepherd is about twelve years, with middle age around seven or eight years old. Generally, a puppy will be close to its adult height around ten to eighteen months of age, but it can take up to three years for a male, or two for a female, to be completely mature.

Once you have decided specifically what type of dog (such as age, sex, etc.) you are looking for and have prepared your home for the arrival of your new companion, now its time to start your search. There are many places you can find your German Shepherd puppy or dog but probably the best place to start your search is through rescue organizations.

There are a wide variety of sources on the internet and in your local area that rescue German Shepherds from numerous situations and they are always seeking to place these dogs in good homes. Even if the type of dog you are seeking is not immediately available, dogs become available everyday so just give it a little time before you move on to the next option.

You can also use the internet to seek out local breeders in your area. When purchasing from a breeder, be sure to observe the conditions of the kennel and the temperament of the dog. The average litter of German Shepherds is eight puppies, so you should have several to select from if a litter is close to the age of being able to be sold.

Wherever you find the German Shepherd you are seeking, be sure to spend some time with your dog before you bring him/her home, you need to be sure that the temperament of your dog will fit well with your own particular living situation. Good luck with your new companion and friend!

Good name for female German Shepherd?

A friend of mine bought a black and tan female German Shepherd puppy and needs a name for her. She doesn’t want a common name, but she doesn’t want a weird name either. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Do You Want A Male Or A Female German Shepherd?

Are you looking to get a new German shepherd? A puppy, or adopted dog? Are you wondering if it is better to get a male or a female dog? Well, according to the professionals, both are equally wonderful choices. Neither is better than the other. They do have certain attributes that are gender related though. German shepherds regardless of male or female are very loyal, willing to be trained, and, they make great family pets. And, even though German shepherds are great “guard” dogs, they are not of an aggressive nature. But, there are still differences between the two.

The male dog is usually stronger, and bigger in structure, more masculine. This means he will be looking a bit more intimidating than its female counterpart. A mature male Shepherd can easily outweigh a female by as much as 30 pounds. And, 30 pounds on a dog is a lot of structure. A male dog may be a little harder to handle, although, again, if trained properly will be a worthy addition to your family.

Male dogs can be more protective and more territorial than a female. They will do what all male dogs do, mark their territory and this could also be an issue, depending on the family home grounds. Female German shepherds can be more protective of their families. This could make them jealous of other pets in the household, especially of a relationship between you and the other pets. That is why; training your dog is of top priority.

Female German shepherds will be a little more streamlined, more feminine. This becomes quite noticeable. Actually, this difference is very noticeable even from a distance. So if the look of your shepherd in that way makes a difference to you, then yes, you may want to gender pick your new dog.

If you do not use your dog for breeding it should be neutered, for its sake and your sake. Neutered dogs are easier to handle, and have less problems connected to their gender. Male dogs are very difficult to handle when on the trail of a dog in heat. And, a dog in heat comes with its own problems of messiness, moodiness and other dogs hanging around. Neutering is best if your dog will be a family pet only.

What gender you get, doesn’t really matter in the long run as long as you are ready and willing to train your dog. An untrained unmanageable German shepherd can actually be a dangerous animal. Even if not aggressive, these dogs are very strong, and they can hurt someone by their sheer strength alone.

If you are adopting, which I pray you do, then you may not have a choice. But, on the other hand, you will get the dog of your heart.

Proper Care And Grooming Tips For German Shepherd Dog!

The first look at the German shepherd dog can make you understand that the dog is strong, agile, alert, and full of life and well muscled animal.

This is the most versatile breed of all dog species. The German shepherd dogs are well known for their intelligence, energy, stability, undying loyalty, versatility and strength. These can be trained very easily [More about dog breeds].

Basic things to know before getting the German shepherd dog:

These are the most important things to remember while you are breeding German shepherd dog.

• German shepherd dog is not a backyard dog or a kennel dog
• Not at all sociable with strangers
• Have high energy levels and expects the same from its owner
• Not at all submissive with other dogs
• Should not be left alone for long hours, always need time-to-time attention
Dog training is the most important task
• Always demands attention from the owner and should not be neglected

The positive sides of breeding a German shepherd dog are:

• These are family dogs and get along with every one in the family
• These are the best companions for alone persons
• These are working dogs and need proper exercise.
• These are very much protective towards their owner and fierce towards strangers
• Sociable with children and do not tend to hurt them

If you can fulfill all these requirements to your dog, then you can breed a German shepherd dog.

German shepherd dog care and grooming:

As other dog species, German shepherd dog also needs special care and grooming [Dog care guidelines].

Dog grooming: The German shepherd dogs are double-coated breeds. It has two coats- down type under coat and a longer hair course as an external course. If the dog’s active levels are normal, the dog needs regular brushing. If the German shepherd dog is extremely active, it requires daily brushing and once in a week bathing.

Exercise: German shepherd dogs are highly active dogs with full of energy. Therefore, these dogs need exercise. Proper exercise and training are necessary for a happy dog and owner. The exercise should include both physical and mental exercise. The physical exercise depends on the German shepherd dog age and activity level.

Mental exercise is necessary for creating a well-balanced and mannered German shepherd dog. Obedience sessions are very important for mental exercise.

Brushing :
The German shepherd dogs love brushing and loved to be cuddled very often. 3-4 times brushing per week is generally prescribed for normal dogs. The dogs with long coats require much concern. Use a ‘slicker’ brush once in a week while brushing the coat of the dog. Regular brushing can make your shepherd stand still and enjoy the session.

Ears : The ears of the German shepherd dogs are very fluffy and thick with hair. Mites love to hide in these places. Regular check up is suggested for dogs with longer coats. Wax is formed in the ears, so consult your vet and ask for authorized German shepherd dog products to clean the wax in the ears. While bathing, avoid water dripping into the ears as the water accumulated in the ear canal can develop infection.

Toenails : Always be cautious about the nail growth. German shepherd dogs are very fierce dogs and need special care when meeting with strangers. Check the nails in weekly basis and make sure the nails do not grow extensively. Cut them from time-to-time; if you fear to cut the nails then at least trim the nails.

Brushing : Check the teeth once in a month and have dental check up once in a year. Brush your dog’s teeth at least thrice in a week for strong teeth. Teeth will accumulate tartar if proper care is not taken. Never use human tooth pastes for dogs. Always check the paste you are using for your dog is edible or not.
