are german shepherds abused when theyre trained as police dogs (please dont bash me, i dont know much about)?
i dont know, its just that theyre so well behaved its kind of unreal. i know theyre like really smart and all, but…like i said, i dont really know D:
Not a dumb question at all. Unlike pretty much everyone who answered here, I have been handling police dogs for almost 9 years and can say that it is not abuse. I might get some ‘thumbs down’ for what I have to say, but you be the judge.
You stated that it’s almost unreal how well behaved they are. Yeah, it’s pretty cool, but that’s because we let them know what’s acceptable. We let them know when they’ve done something good, and not so good. You are correct in stating that these dogs are very smart. In fact they are almost too smart sometimes. Dogs are masters of body language, they can see right through a B.S. correction, or when the handler is uncomfortable or nervous.
Is it abuse? No, it isn’t; how I define abuse anyway. There really is no need to trash your dog. Most dogs are subordinate enough that sharp voice tones and a leash correction is plenty. However if you have an exceptionally ‘hard’ dog, you might need to get into him a little to make the correction ‘mean’ something. However if you have a dog that is ‘handler sensitive’, getting too rough with him will only shut him down. Now if you have a dog that is ‘rank’, applying corrections might cause him to ‘come up the leash’.
We only use what’s necessary. I hope I shed some light on this for you.
Which K-9 police dog is best to get, German Shepherd or Rottweiler?
I’m doing a project for one of my classes, and I need to know what other think and why?
I would go with a German Shepherd. They are extremely intelligent. If you have a family then a German Shepherd would be a better choice as well because its good with kids.
German Shepherds are my favorite dogs so I might be a little biased, but I had a friend who owned a Rottweiler and that dog… well lets just say it wasn’t the brightest bulb.
