All the dogs are intelligent, but the Malamutes are very willful and harder to train. My Malamute is very good with children and small dogs, but she may be more of an exception than the rule. I have had a very difficult time keeping my Malamute confined because she can (and will) scale any heighth of wall just to run. She does always know her way back home though (I have heard Siberians also have this need to escape, but can’t find their way back home). All require exercise, but the Malamute needs a lot more than a Shepherd. All in all I think the German Shepherds are more eager to please and don’t have that compelling drive to run and cover territory like the huskies.

I got a german shepherd puppy 3 weeks ago. I was calling her Rylie…But it just doesn’t seem feminine enough. My mom wants me to name her Chloe, and she and my sister now call her Chloe so I’ve tried to call her that and it’s just too frilly–it’s more of a labrador retriever name than a GSD. She’s elegant,regal and yet goofy in her own way. So…which name do you like better for a shepherd? I got her an i.d tag w/ Rylie on it, but I can get her another one if I decide to change her name. Rylie or Chloe?

Training A Labrador Guide Dog

Dogs are used the world over for many tasks; sheep herding, drug detection, crowd control, mountain-rescue, to name just a few; each species adapted to suit its own, unique in-bred skills. It is Mankind’s bond to his dog that makes their relationship so special. One of the most amazing examples of man and dog working together must surely be that of a Guide Dog leading a blind, or visually impaired person along our streets.

Although Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds can also be used for this task, the Labrador epitomises the traditional guide dog for the blind. So, how does this relationship begin? It is not so much the case of training a guide dog, but training the relationship between man and dog.

The first stage in a puppy’s development into becoming a guide dog is to make sure that it is not easily frightened or of a nervous disposition – they must be good-natured and naturally calm. This is done with the aid of volunteers who look after the puppies up until they are about a year old. In this time they will introduce the young dogs to the world around them, and teach them basic skills in obedience.

At the end of this period of introduction, the volunteer will pass the puppy on to the care of one of several Guide Dog Training schools. A professional trainer will then teach the dog the necessary skills that are required for the job of leading the blind and visually impaired; skills that include walking in a straight line, stopping at the curb and maneuvering around obstructions. This training period will lasts between six to eight months.

Assuming the dog has met the required skills, (not all of them do) the next task is to then pair up the dog with its new owner. There follows a period of intense training to forge a bond between man and animal – either within the training facility or at the owner’s home. The relationship will have to be strong between them as, outside the home, the blind person will be totally dependent upon his dog’s skill to navigate the various obstacles along the pedestrian highway. Unlike pets, guide dogs are service animals – in charge of the welfare of their keeper – as such they are not to be approached, fed or handled without the express permission of their owner. Even though the dog may appear friendly, its training is such that it may be discouraged to react to other people, in favour of its owner.

A guide dog’s life is demanding a strenuous and, as such, has a working life of about seven years. At this point the animal will usually be retired out of service. This means either being kept by the owner or handed back to the training school, which will endeavor to find it a new and loving home.

You can expect to pay anywhere from about $30-$100 at a shelter. Don’t be fooled by the stereotype–shelters DO have purebreds–a recent study revealed animal shelters have up to 35% purebreds!

3 Easy Steps To German Shepherd Puppy Training

German Shepherd puppy training is easy if you know how. For example the “come-fore” teaches your dog to sit and face you. To teach your dog to do this keep your lead slack when teaching. First issue a firm “Front!” and then walk backward. Also, don’t move the position of your hands on the lead. As the dog moves towards you gather the lead and coax him to come in close. Now while holding the lead tight issue a firm command to “Sit!” Praise your German Shepherd as soon as he does this, give him a treat and issue the command “Stay.” Step back again to heel position. Do this without circling or moving around your dog.

Now, walk backward and keep your lead slack. Issue the command “Front!” Remember not to pull your dog around on a tight lead. The lead is mainly used to get the dog close and make him sit in front of you. Next, step back to heel position and issue command “Front!” Remember, the dog does the turning! All you do is walk backward two or three steps. When your dog turns around, gather the lead up and prompt him to sit. Praise at once. Give him a treat or pat him.

Remember to stand up straight and not to lean forward towards your dog. Hold your hands low and close to your body. Pull the lead in to make the dog sit. Train your German Shepherd to sit straight and squarely on both hips. Hold the leash tight and gently cuff him on whichever hip is out of line. This exercise is important as every obedience exercise includes the “come-fore” position. Therefore, it is important that the German Shepherd puppy training is done correctly at the very beginning else, your dog will get into habit of doing sloppy work.

It’s hard to find a German shepherd that actually makes a good family pet. I acquired my GSD from the local animal shelter. There is no doubt she is purebred, and she’s got German lines, but she is pretty mellow. If you do lots of research you can find a breeder that breeds for temperment first, and looks second. There is also a really good GSD group on Yahoo Groups that might know of a good breeder. You also might try contacting GSD rescues or looking on petfinder.com. They sometimes have purebred puppies and have been temperament evaluated before adoption.

The German Shepherd Essential Dog Breed Info

As their name implies, German Shepherds were bred as herding dogs. As such they were bred to work closely with people and to control large moving masses. Herding dogs were bred to work and need work; if you don’t provide them with it they will find their own work to do. Also bred to think independently at times, these dogs can be smart problem solvers.

From their background as herders, you can expect these dogs to chase moving objects like bicycles and cars. They also have a tendency to nip at running children the same way they would nip at the heels of livestock. This is known as movement-stimulated nipping.

German Shepherds are very intelligent and versatile. They can be trained to be police dogs, guide dogs, seeing-eye dogs, protection dogs and so on. They can make wonderful companions. Even though highly trainable, German Shepherds require professional assistance at least for the first two years. They need constant, daily training and socialization sessions. Intensive early socialization is required to offset the problems of shyness and noise sensitivity that is common among all herding breeds. One should definitely not reward aggression or cowardice in this breed. Male German Shepherds should be neutered early.

German Shepherds have been an extremely popular breed for many years which has led to problems associated with overbreeding and poor breeding. Widespread genetic and temperament problems has left the Shepherd breed abounding with dogs who suffer from health and behaviour problems, excessive shyness and aggression. German Shepherds often become over attached to their owners which leads to separation anxiety, over protectiveness and fear of new situations.

The average height of a German Shepherd is between 22-26 inches and their average weight ranges from 65-100 pounds. Some, of course, can get much larger than this. Most Shepherds are black and tan in colour, but some can be solid black, white, or gray. These dogs are double-coated breeds and as such shed profusely. When shedding occurs, usually in the spring and fall, German Shepherds need to be brushed daily. Shedding lasts a couple of weeks, during which time the dogs will shed an amazing amount of hair.

As previously mentioned, these dogs need work and that translates into plenty of exercise. At least two sessions per day would be a minimum requirement. Daily training sessions would also be highly recommended.

Due to the high volume of breeding over the years, the behaviour of German Shepherds around children and other pets can be quite unpredictable. Some dogs can be fantastic around kids and pets and others can be the opposite. Some of this behaviour can be attributed to inherited traits but training and early socialization also play an important role here.

German Shepherds are prone to a vast array of health concerns. Here is a small list: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, spinal degeneration, auto-immune disease, thyroid dysfunction, subaortic stenosis, skin disorders and gastrointestinal problems. Poor temperament has now become so common that a stable, confident and calm Shepherd is a very pleasant surprise.

At their best, German Shepherds are second-to-none for their companionship and devotion. They can be trained to do almost anything. It is a sad situation that these good specimens are hard to find with so many unhealthy and unstable dogs out there.

White German Shepherd Puppy eating chew toy!?

My White GSD was chewing its Hartz chewing toy sticks, then she started cutting it, chewing it and swallowing it! Is this normal dog behavior or is it hazardous to its health? I don’t know (first dog I adopt)
I bought my White GSD puppy a Rawhide chew toy (Hartz), its a stick that looks like wood. Today, as she was playing with it, it chew off the end part after part and swallowed half of it! PLZ HELP!!! Will she choke? Is this hazardous or normal?!?!?!?! IM REALLY SCARED FOR HER!!!

It’s probably best not to give your dog those if he chews through them that easy, though you shouldn’t worry. Your dog is probably fine but most vets recommend not giving them rawhide treats and things because they can mess with your dogs digestive system. He’s most likely fine, but if you notice anything odd, such as a change in eating habits or blood in his stool take him to a vet right away.

I recommend a Kong toy for a GSD, they look like red or black rubber snowmen, and are very tough to chew apart.

Miecke and the Worms

My family has always owned dogs. It is our tradition. We cannot even imagine our lives without dogs. We have also been very lucky. We never had any trouble with our dogs. All our dogs were easy to train and very trustworthy. We were spoiled. Everything changed when Miecke came into our lives. Miecke is an adorable German shepherd. Cute as a button.

I remember it very clearly when my husband brought her home. She was so calm, so patient, and so quiet. We thought we hit a jackpot with that one. But we were also curious. Isn’t she just a tad too quiet? And then it got worse. She became inactive, her gums and ears became pale, she started eating her poop, and her poop smelled so badly, our eyes welled up. All that happened in a very short time period.

We knew we had to take her to the vet right away. The only reason we waited so long was because the man who gave her to us said she had just been to the vet and was de-wormed. Our vet diagnosed Miecke with hook worms, gave her the medicine, and she got well very quickly. The sweet, quiet, passive puppy changed into a little tornado before our very eyes. But that is a different story.

What have I learned from this experience? Never trust blindly the person who gives you a puppy. Take the pup to the vet right away. Be alert when your puppy is too mild mannered. Lethargy, smelly fecal matter, white gums and ears are just some of the indicators that there can be worms present in your puppy’s digestive system.

Female siberian husky puppy (9 weeks) coming into a home with a 2 year old and a 4 year old male cat….?

is there any evidence showing how the female pup and the male cat will interact? i know that growing up we had a female german shepherd/husky and a female cat and they got along great — slept on the same bed even. but Im worried about how they’ll get along and if there’s anything that I can do to help them get used to each other – also my 2 year old is in the mix so we have to take his boisterous actions into consideration….any advice/help would be appreciated!

I have had Six Siberian Huskies. They are a breed with a strong prey drive.
I had no problem with any of them with cats.

You should certainly wait to get a dog until your child is 9 years old.

Again I will be surprised if any reputable breeder will put a dog into your home with your young child. My guess is you are dealing with a backyard breeder.

Dog Breeds And Their Characteristics

A lot of people do not take this into account when they adopt or buy a dog as in most people go for a certain breed of dog because of its size, popularity, the dogs appearance etc. When choosing a dog the decision should be based particularly on the breed of the dog because of the characteristics they inherit. Also every dog is different some dogs are more stubborn than others and other dogs more easier to train the others. There are also different types of intelligence such as:

Learning ability – if dogs have a good learning ability they may only need to be exposed to a situation a few times to get a stable response e.g. knowing where their toys are kept and running to the place when playful.

Problem solving – the faster a dog solves a problem with as little errors at the start

Communication intelligence – the dogs understanding of what he needs to do the dogs willingness to take directions and not be distracted

And instinctive intelligence – this intelligence is normally bred in to dogs by combining different qualities from each breed.

Here are a few dogs with good characteristics keeping in mind that all dogs can be good and make great family pets, just some are more suited to it naturally than others.

The wire haired fox terrier – this is a small but very active and lively dog, they have perfect balance, they are alert, are very quick in movement. Wired haired terriers are very friendly dogs who are forthcoming and fearless.

Basset Griffon Vendeen – this dog is a strong, active and courageous hound with great stamina and great bark to go with it. These dogs are happy and outgoing but they can be a little stubborn and easily agitated however they are willing to please with firm handling.

Greyhound – these dogs have remarkable stamina and endurance so they require a lot of exercise, they are also very intelligent, gentle, affectionate and even tempered a great family dog and very easy to train..

Siberian Husky – these dogs make very good companions they are friendly and gentle, alert, outgoing, intelligent and very eager. These dogs are good to train as they are willing to learn and work.

In a study showing the breeds of dogs which are smartest, easiest to train and have great willingness to work and obey formed a list from best to worse and in first place was the border collie, the list is as follows:

1. Border collie

2. Poodle

3. German shepherd

4. Golden retriever

5. Doberman

6. Shetland sheepdog

7. Labrador retriever

And the least intelligent were:

1. Afghan hound

2. Basenji

3. Bulldog

4. Chow chow

5. Borzoi

6. Bloodhound
