Are all German Shepherd puppies born black?

We are looking forward to getting a German Shepherd and I was doing research on them and noticed that in all the pictures the puppies are black…Do they chance colors as the get older? Or did I just so happen to only see pictures of darker German Shepherds?

Solids are born one solid color and they will stay that way. Saddle/bi-color pups will be born mostly black but you will see color on the cheeks, vent, and lower legs. This will spread as the pup gets older until it achieves its final color at 12-18 months old. Sable puppies are born with a dark dorsal stripe and lighter sides. How much base color vs black shows up on the sides depends on how dark they will be as adults. They will get lighter for the first couple of months as they go through the puppy coat stages. As the adult coat comes in, they will begin to get darker again until they achieve their final coat color at 12-24 months old.

EDIT – I should have mentioned that REALLY dark bi-colors can be born with no markings on face or feet but you WILL see color at the vent. May just be a couple hairs at first but it’ll spread as the pup ages and markings will appear in the normal places later.

My German Shepherd puppy knocks over other puppies and tries to sit and lay on top of them?

Is he just trying to establish that he’s the alpha? He’s 4 months old and does this with smaller dogs.

Need an opinion on a Kennel Name?

I posted this question earlier but didn’t get very many answers. For those of you who answered last time I answered the questions that some of you asked.

I am starting a German shepherd kennel and am thinking of names. I have thought of a bunch of things and so far my only 2 that are a maybe are Summit German Shepherds and Sender German Shepherds. Summit comes from Summit Entertainment (the movie Twilight) and Sender is my maiden name. Also I don’t want any German names and I don’t want to put “Von” or “Vom” in it.

Do either of these sound good? Do either sound bad? Any other one-word ideas?

I like Sender. Summit is much too common. My kennelname has my former mother-in-law’s maiden name in it… which is a bit strange. But I loved her and wasn’t going to change it after the divorce (not that she’d have known since she was already deceased).

Just Vom haus?

Has anyone ever heard of a German Shepherd kennel that has just the name Vom haus? I have had a few people that have contacted me that have dogs, and they swear that the kennel name is just Vom Haus. Before anyone gets on their high horses, I know what Vom haus means! LOL
It means house of. I am going through some old GSD reviews as well. This one person contacted me yesterday and claims the kennel name is just “Vom Haus”. I have heard a lot of other people saying it too. Just can not find any info with a GSD kennel just as Vom Haus.
Drb it does not make sense, when I explain this to people they just don’t get it. LOL

You know it is just a common part of a kennel name — like v.d. or ‘of’ or whatever… so it likely isn’t a full kennel name and if it is, then it is likely someone so lacking in knowledge as to name their ‘kennel’ basically an article and not a real name! haha Kinda says a lot if that IS their ‘kennel’ name

what’s the best way to start a german shepherd in scenting and tracking and are there any good websites/books?

or do you know of any games, training etc to keep their minds occupied, I am unable to take them out for long walks during the day so must keep their superior brains active and free from boredom

get the dog's Favorit treat or toy give it a good smell and let the dog smell it for a while then hide it some here it can see it and just keep doing it, and make at lest each 10 of less or even more hides harder but not to much ._.

Understanding why Beagles Love to Track

Though Beagles today are known primarily as great family pets and lovable lap dogs (even if they’re far too big for you lap), they were bred for another purpose entirely. This is not uncommon; many breeds were initially developed to help in one line of work or another, but have since been bred into the wonderful companions we know and love today.

The skill Beagles were originally bred for was their tracking ability. This breed possess one of the best senses of smell in the entire canine kingdom, and the dogs once excelled at tracking and foraging. Because of this, Beagles were originally used as tracking dogs to aid hunters, hence their trademark howl. Today, Beagles are often used for different types of tracking.

Beagles are often used on search and rescue missions, trained to follow the scent of a missing person or seek out living victims in wreckage after building collapses, fires, or natural disasters. Beagles are also used as cadaver dogs after they have been trained to pick up the scent of decaying human flesh. When used for any of these purposes, Beagles’ impeccable sense of smell helps them to succeed at finding their subjects. Beagles have saved many lives working on rescue missions with their handlers.

Beagles are used to track undocumented and illegal smuggling of agricultural items. This can be more difficult for other breeds, as the smell of fruits and vegetables is not an uncommon smell, even in an airport. However, the properly trained Beagle can sniff out and indicate a smuggler with the greatest of ease. Beagles are so successful at this task that the USDA developed a party of contraband-sniffing dogs called the USDA Beagle Brigade!

Besides detecting illegal plants and foodstuffs, Beagles are frequently used as drug sniffing dogs, sneaking out substances such as marijuana or cocaine on international airline passengers. The Beagle’s highly sensitive nose can lead their law enforcement officer and handler right up to the criminal, without arousing as much fear or suspicion as a larger and more menacing dog like a German Shepherd might.

The Beagle’s sense of scent is so particular and exact that they can pick out the presence of certain kinds of insects. In less glamorous work than law enforcement or rescue missions, Beagles are today and just recently being used to seek out the presence and location of termites in homes. Can you imagine being able to pick out a termite by smell? That is one powerful nose!

Beagles do not only have a fantastic ability to sniff out contraband items or pesky bugs. They are also intelligent, loving, food-motivated dogs that are eager to please. This makes training worlds easier, even training as detailed as coaching a dog to sniff out a tomato from over the border.

Wings and Thighs how to cook them for my German Shepherd Dog puppy?

I would greatly appreciate if someone here could give me some input on how to cook wings and thighs for my German Shepherd Dog puppy. I was recently told today by a Nutro spokesperson that wings and thighs have glucosamine, which is important that German Shepherd Dogs receive. I want to cook for my puppy as she has just turned 5 months today. I am trying to get her more filled in by adding some more muscle to her great bone density. Please help me in this current situation that I have. I greatly appreciate everyone’s input. She is at 50lbs and I have no clue as to how much should I give her per day but more importantly how to cook it for her. Thank you everyone have a great weekend. = )

Easy – you don’t.

Don’t cook them, just give it to her raw. Glucosamine is contained inside the soft bone/bone content, and if you apply heat to bones, you’ll make them brittle and dangerous to eat.

We feed our dogs raw meaty bones all the time. We have a miniature pinscher (5 lbs) and a doberman pinscher. You just have to monitor them and make sure they are chewing their food and not just swallowing – yes, bones included.

Don’t let anyone tell you not to feed your dogs bones, even poultry bones. People who do raw feeding do it often. Our dogs has no problem chewing up raw turkey necks, beef knuckles, etc and it keeps their teeth squeaky clean, too.

Just don’t feed the raw stuff with the kibble stuff. Put a couple hours in between because they have different rates of digestion.

Health Problems in the German Shepherd Dog

As with most pedigree breeds, there are certain hereditary conditions that can be a problem in the German Shepherd as well as other health issues that are more prevalent in this breed which need to be considered if you are thinking acquiring a GSD.

If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy it is important to ensure that you only purchase a healthy dog from a reputable breeder and a good idea would be to contact the breed council who should be able to provide you with a list of such breeders. Most reputable breeders don’t need to advertise but if they do they tend not to use free papers or other general advertising media but will usually place their advert in a specialist dog magazine or paper. The Kennel Club will provide a list of breeders but this does not signify that they are reputable only that they register their puppies with the KC.
 
There are a number of common conditions seen in this breed, some of which have a better prognosis than others but all of which are expensive to treat – so insure your German Shepherd Dog as soon as you get it.

Inherited conditions such as hip dysplasia are becoming more common largely because of irresponsible breeding so you should look for a puppy whose parents are both hip scored and the lower the score the better – ideally less than ten. This is a distressing and painful condition for a GSD as well as the costs for treating being prohibitive if the animal is not insured. Elbow dysplasia is also a common hereditary condition.

Bloat or gastric torsion is a real emergency and a life threatening condition, which has become more common in deep chested dogs over the years. Experts are divided but good tips for reducing the risk are that it is best to feed 2 small meals rather than one large meal a day and to avoid feeding your GSD before strenuous exercise.

Anal furunculosis is a distressing auto immune condition which can be controlled with expensive drugs for a while but will inevitably progress as is the condition CDRM which is a degenerative disease which will ultimately lead to the loss of use of the dogs back legs and then bowel/urinary incontinence.

For whatever reason there seems to be an increasing number of GSD’s suffering from PI – pancreatic insufficiency, which presents as chronic watery diarrhoea and failure to thrive. This condition is treatable with expensive pancreatic enzymes and a low fat diet but the regime must be strictly adhered to.

Epilepsy is also more common these days and although it can be controlled by drugs, usually tolerance eventually occurs which will often result in the loss of control of the fits and the likelihood of brain damage as a result of prolonged uncontrolled fitting.

To protect your new puppy and in order to try to minimise long term or future health problems, it is vital that a high quality feeding regime is adopted from the start. German shepherds often have digestive problems so it is important to find a quality food that your dog likes and one that doesn’t upset the digestion. If in doubt ask your vet for advice or contact German Shepherd Rescue UK.

How can you achieve business success in these difficult times?   How can you increase sales without cutting prices so drastically you make no profit?                                          

The answer is to use secret selling strategies.

What are “secret selling strategies”?

Secret selling strategies are marketing strategies quite different to the selling methods, closing techniques and advertising promotions used by your competitors. 

“Secret Selling Strategies” is a name I coined for unusual, original marketing strategies I devised and developed at a time when my company was going through a very difficult period.

I owned a number of furniture and appliance stores. They were doing very well for a long time.  Sales were excellent.  But all of a sudden I noticed a drastic drop in my sales figures.  My sales staff told me that this fall-off in sales coincided with the opening up of two new chain stores that had recently come to our city.

They were advertising very aggressively and selling merchandise very much the same as ours – but at far lower prices.

These two rival chain stores were competing with one another for a greater share of the market.  In the process they cut prices to the bone.

I knew that if I had to sell at the same, ridiculously  low prices I would soon become bankrupt.  Something drastic had to be done

I spent a great deal of time giving the situation a great deal of careful thought and did a great deal of reading.  I realised that my selling strategies were not creative and original. My marketing methods  were too similar to the methods used by other companies.

Finally I came up with a selling plan that incorporated a number of very craftyand very creative, original, selling ideas.

How do you interpret the word “crafty”?

Some people may think of the word “crafty” as cunning and deceitful.  But these selling strategies I devised were certainly not deceitful. devious or dishonest in any way.

To my mind a “craft” is a clever skill.  It is a skill that not everyone possesses. These “secret selling strategies” were simply clever, ingenious  methods my sales staff and I used to persuade customers to buy from us – regardless of price.

We used these techniques to close sales so effectively that price was no longer the most important factor when a  customer  made a buying  decision.

Recently my wife finally persuaded me to sell my business and retire, something she has been encouraging to do for a long time, so that I can have more time to spend with my children and grand-children.

I now have far more time to devote, not only to my wife, children, grandchildren, but also to my favorite hobbies.  These are writing and breeding, showing and training top-quality German Shepherds.

I have also been encouraged by my wife to write a book about my business experiences.  This I have done.  In writing this book have decided to set out in great detail all the  innovative, special secret selling strategies I used, that were directly responsible for the success I was able to achieve in my business.

Although these “secret selling strategies” were originally devised for the retail trade, I have no doubt you’ll be able to adapt them to suit your own particular purpose.

I’m sure you are going to find them as valuable as I did in persuading your customers and clients to choose your product or service rather than those of your competitors.

I have a german shepherd pup that came from a pedigree father?

can I register him with that alone with the AKC ? or did they owner have to register the litter ?

Yes and no.
It depends on what KIND of registration you want.

(1) Full registration is required for entry into conformation shows and for having litters registered. I do not approve of the AKC’s way of doing it (in my country, only the breeder can do this type of registration for a pup), which is that the breeder must “notify” the litter to the AKC but then has the option of allowing each buyer to fill in the individual registration form. As a result, it is almost impossible to tell which pooches are litter mates and who bred what, when you look at show or trial results. The quality breeders will register each pup BEFORE sale, to ensure that they all have the breeder’s kennel name and siblings have the same litter-code (which is usually a letter of the alphabet but can be a theme such as “aeroplane types”).
So if full registration is what you wanted, you are out of luck – if the dam doesn’t have full registration then no-one can register her pups for show & breeding purposes.
(2) About 18 months ago the AKC joined the rest of the world in allowing pooches of even totally unknown ancestry to be given “obedience only” registration. That allows the pooch to compete in agility, companion-utility trials, fly ball, obedience tests, Rally-O, tracking trials. It can become an Agility Champion and/or an Obedience Champion. Look in http://www.akc.org/ if that’s what you want to investigate

Registration is NOT necessary in order to join a training club class when your pup is 18-22 weeks old, which is when you SHOULD join a training club so that the instructor can coach YOUR techniques before you make too many mistakes – and at the same time your pet learns to pay attention regardless of what other dogs & people are doing.

What a Dog can Do!

 “Momma? Momma? Where’s my notebook?”  yelled Elijah. “The news station called to say your interview has been changed to 11:00!”

“Momma! I can’t find my school shoes!” exclaimed Isaiah. “Oh, and your other wheelchair battery is finished re-charging.”

“Mom! My report got moved off the desk… do you know where it is?”  hollered Isabelle.  “I’ve already fed the 5 new dogs but haven’t fed any of the puppies yet.”

“Mama! I’m hungry… Can I make the pancakes?”  giggled Aaron. “Isabelle, your report is under the new donation checks.”

Wow! What a busy household! Does it sound like yours?  It sounds like mine only a bit more chaotic… news interviews, wheelchairs, dogs and donations… PLUS 4 kids. Who is this woman I am writing about today?

Karen gives Ben, a black German Shepherd assistance dog, the credit, praise and honor of not only being her inspiration to start the non-profit organization, but also for saving her life.

As an energetic young college woman, Karen was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease called “Myasthenia gravis” which literally means “serious muscle-weakness.”  With varying degrees of severe fatigue and chronic muscle weakness, Karen’s physical condition had deteriorated so much that she became dependent on a respirator to breathe, unable to walk or even sit up straight, depressed, discouraged and suicidal. She even had a secret stash of morphine she could have used to end it all… but. . .

(you knew there was a “but” coming, didn’t you!)

but. . .  one of her friends… believed so much that Karen deserved a happy full life… even with Myasthenia Gravis, she began literally dragging her and her wheelchair to animal shelters forcing Karen to look for a possible service dog. They found Ben… a black shadow of love that needed Karen as much as she needed him. Ben grew from a pup into a loving assistant for Karen. Ben was trained to bring mail and beverages, answer the phone on command, and to generally watch over her.

One day due to medication complications, Karen was in serious need of medical attention and unresponsive. When the phone rang, Ben answered the phone without being given his command and brought the phone over to where she lay breathing but unable to speak… after staying quiet for a few moments to allow Karen to speak (of course she couldn’t) Ben began barking into the phone and then getting quiet so the caller understood something was wrong.

The caller (who happened to be Karen’s father) hung up and called 911. The ambulance responders found Ben still by Karen barking into the phone. They all credit Ben for saving her life.

From that experience, Karen realized she had the ability to influence and affect other lives. Thus, together with Ben, she cofounded Paws 4 Ability, an organization that matches and trains service, assistance, and companion dogs with needy children and adults. Paws 4 Ability’s mission?  “…to enrich the lives of people with disabilities by training and placing service animals to provide them with companionship and promote independent living… specializing in placements with people who are turned away by many other agencies.”

From a despondent, diseased woman Karen is now a vibrant, business professional with 4 growing children… all stemming from a friend’s loving belief in Karen’s life.

“Mom, the school bus is here! Love you… see you later!” rang out 4 voices in unison.

Karen smiles, feels their love and finishes her morning routine. In her busy but organized mind she runs through the day. . . “get ready for the interview, deposit the new donations and call about that new litter of puppies I just heard about…”

So, what are you doing today with the rest of your life? I encourage you to be like Karen and let the belief that someone believes in you be a changing point.

Let that belief turn you around from a life of despair to a life of hope, love and generosity.

i am looking to adopt a GSD puppy.
there is one that is the last of the litter, but she has a white spot on her nose. its like a small smear running on the side of her nose. is that normal? does it affect its health? thanks

The genes for pigment/colour have nothing to do with a GSD’s health, except that some of the lines that produce self-coloured blues have defective hairs on their ears, and those hairs gradually rub off between moults.

What causes health issues in the off-coloured GSDs is pure and simple – the BREEDERS! Because they insist on “their” colour they “forgive” all sorts of problems, from temperament onwards.

Without seeing the white mark I cannot guess whether it is genetic or environmental, but in a young pup a scar deep enough to cause white hairs is highly unlikely.
If it is small, and there are no white patches elsewhere (not even at the tip of the tail) it is most likely to be an unusually early case of vitiligo. I’m not sure whether vitiligo is mentioned in any of the veterinary search sites found in The Source: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Diseases_001198817153/_Veterinary_site_search_001199114148/ – if not, there are articles on the web about the human version. Basically, its genes have not yet been tracked down, and it is not a “death sentence”.

Can you breed a white and tan german shepherd?

My friend and I are thinking of getting German shepherd puppies. I want a white one and he wants a tan one. I was wondering if these could eventually be bred or is this a bad idea? Also are the white German Shepherds able to be registered? We want to be able to possibly breed high quality registered shepherds.

You can breed them, If your black/tan one carries the white gene, some would be all white, some would be black/tan.
However if your black/tan does not carry the white gene (it is like blue eyes in humans, a recessive gene), the all the puppies would be black/tan, but carry the recessive gene. You do not say what country you come from. England and USA register whites, Australia does not.

However, it really depends on the quality of your dogs, you can only breed high quality dogs if you have good quality parents, tracking back several generations. You also have to make sure they are healthy, so have to be tested for hips/elbows and other genetic problems. If you do not test, you will be classified and BYB, and the dogs would only be pet quality, no matter what “quality”, as no reputable person would purchase these pups.
The dogs must be over 2 years in age, as you have to spend time training, showing, and evaluating their temperament. Only the top dogs with good health, temperament and drive should be bred.
My advice (if you decide to go ahead) would be to bred them to their own colours, not each other. There is some proof that breeding whites to black/tans lightens the colour to an unattractive or disqualification colour – again not high quality.
Start researching now if you are interested, join clubs, obedience or agility so you have proven track record with your dogs. You will need to form a puppy contract, research how to socialize and gives the pups many experiences when under your care (eg access to water so they have not fear etc). It is not nearly as easy as you think, good quality breeders take time to learn their craft, so join clubs and start researching now.
