Do not use a jingle bell as they could get their toe caught in it. So when they are little, I ring the bell for them, and then open the door to go *outside to potty. When they get bigger, I take their paw and whack the bell and open the door to go potty. Eventually getting to the place where the puppy will ring the bell and let me know when they need to go potty. Dogs want to please you, so it is your job to let them know what behaviors please you and what doesn’t. So when my puppy goes potty, I give her a treat*, and clap, and make a fuss and praise her. So she learns that going potty outside makes me happy. If she has an accident, make a disgust sound like “tsst” and take her out right away. I never yell* or spank* my puppies. Take them out when they first wake up, after they eat or drink, before nap, finish romping, when their activities change, or when they are sniffing around. Some puppies go pee right away, but may not go poop until 10 minutes later, so wait for the poop. I have a little play time here, because sometimes I think they are done, and they are not. Puppies train at their own pace. While I may have a puppy that hasn’t had an accident in several weeks, I don’t let my guard down. I don’t expect my puppies to be “fully potty trained” until one-year-old. If they have a setback, shake it off, and start over. I only have my puppies in the crate when I am not watching them. When I am sleeping, cooking, ironing, doing chores, basically when I am not watching her. All other times, she is out of the crate practicing being a “big girl.” This is the time I train her how to behave in the house. So we are practicing “no barking”, ‘no biting”, “no jumping”, and “don’t eat the furniture.” I also have to practice “playing inside” so she doesn’t knock over things. You must keep the puppy in sight when they are little because they don’t know the difference between newspaper and carpet, and you don’t want them sneaking off and getting into trouble. Some puppies can sleep through the night around 3-months-old, but their bladder is grown around 6-months-old.

When the puppy is first little, keep the pee pad, litter box near the food and water dish, so the puppy can eat and drink, and then go potty. You can move it away as they get older. The pee pad has a scent that smells and initiates potty. Sometimes a pee pad makes a sound that scares some puppies, so you might want to use a litter box if that happens. The pee pad allows a puppy to walk around, but a litter box keeps the puppy in one place.
*BEDROOMS, I use the bedroom and living room for training, because it works for me. Choose rooms that work for you, but watch for rooms that are damp, or drafty. While my puppies sleep in the bedroom during training, once they are trained, I let them sleep where they want to. They don’t have to sleep in the bedroom forever.
*TREATS. While I use treats for training, you don’t have to. I like Charlee Bears for training (a little cracker for a little mouth,) I use them for training, but once they are trained, I cut back on them.
*SOME PUPPIES will go potty in the same spot each time. Some puppies have to be told to go potty. A command like “go out” for pee, or “go finish” for poop, might work for you, keep saying “go finish” until the puppy poops. This is a good thing to train if you travel with your dogs. By using commands, the puppy won’t get confused when you are visiting someone, on vacation with you, or when you get to a new home. The command will tell them what you want them to do in an unfamiliar place. You might also want to use a leash method, so the puppy doesn’t sneak off, or for strange places.
*YELLING. It is not a good idea to “yell” or “spank” your puppy and then take them outside when they have an accident. They may get confused and think that going outside is punishment. While you want to correct them, if you are extreme, they may not want to go outside again. Shake it off, and resume your schedule. You have to keep it real. Puppies train at their own pace, but a puppy can only hold their potty for a few hours. A guide would be 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a three-month-old puppy should only be expected to hold their potty for 4 hours at most.

Natural Dog Food Recipes for GSD with Allergies?
Does anyone have any recipes or a free link to recipes for dogs with allergies? My 8 month old German Shepherd is on “itching medication” right now for his allergies and they don’t seem to be working. The vet said he might have food allergies, so I was going to try out some homemade foods to make him. Please help!
It’s terrific that you want to get away from junky processed food! Here is my blanket answer for dog food questions:
Dogs can technically live on an omnivorous diet, but any dog that lives wild, whether it is a feral dog or the dog’s cousin, the wolf, will eat meat, fat and bones every chance it gets. A wild dog’s diet is comprised of muscle and organ meats, bones, fat, and they will possibly ingest some fibrous vegetable matter if they eat any stomach or intestine contents, which they usually avoid. Aside from munching grass to help them throw up, dogs do NOT eat vegetables, grains or fruits – and most importantly, their digestive system is an extrememly harsh, short one, which breaks down meat, bone and fat beautifully but doesn’t break down those fibrous vegetables and grains.
If you want to give your dog the best diet possible, either feed him raw muscle and organ meats with raw bones, or at least get him a dry food that is meat-based (check out Eagle Pack, Blue Buffalo, Diamond, Innova, or any of the other great natural and organic foods out there) and supplement this dry food diet with raw bones and fresh (or cooked, if you must) meat and eggs. A healthy dog will have no “doggy” breath, very minimal fecal matter (because his body is using what he’s eating), healthy skin, a shiny coat and eyes, and will not come down with diet-related diseases down the road. Food truly is the best medicine, and is far easier on your wallet than expensive medicines, tonics and surgeries that you’ll buy from your vet to fix the problem after it’s too far gone.

Unfortunately, I’ve been searching high and low for a recipe WITHOUT vegetables or grains, because a dog’s digestive system cannot properly process them. I have yet to find one, so here is a link with some good information:
HOWEVER, in my research I found that nuts, especially macadamia, are toxic to dogs, just like onions, grapes and theobromine in chocolates, so I’m not sure why nuts are included on the list. The rest of the information does look sound to me, so that’s why I’ve included it.

My White GSD was chewing its Hartz chewing toy sticks, then she started cutting it, chewing it and swallowing it! Is this normal dog behavior or is it hazardous to its health? I don’t know (first dog I adopt)
I bought my White GSD puppy a Rawhide chew toy (Hartz), its a stick that looks like wood. Today, as she was playing with it, it chew off the end part after part and swallowed half of it! PLZ HELP!!! Will she choke? Is this hazardous or normal?!?!?!?! IM REALLY SCARED FOR HER!!!
It’s probably best not to give your dog those if he chews through them that easy, though you shouldn’t worry. Your dog is probably fine but most vets recommend not giving them rawhide treats and things because they can mess with your dogs digestive system. He’s most likely fine, but if you notice anything odd, such as a change in eating habits or blood in his stool take him to a vet right away.
I recommend a Kong toy for a GSD, they look like red or black rubber snowmen, and are very tough to chew apart.

Miecke and the Worms
My family has always owned dogs. It is our tradition. We cannot even imagine our lives without dogs. We have also been very lucky. We never had any trouble with our dogs. All our dogs were easy to train and very trustworthy. We were spoiled. Everything changed when Miecke came into our lives. Miecke is an adorable German shepherd. Cute as a button.
I remember it very clearly when my husband brought her home. She was so calm, so patient, and so quiet. We thought we hit a jackpot with that one. But we were also curious. Isn’t she just a tad too quiet? And then it got worse. She became inactive, her gums and ears became pale, she started eating her poop, and her poop smelled so badly, our eyes welled up. All that happened in a very short time period.
We knew we had to take her to the vet right away. The only reason we waited so long was because the man who gave her to us said she had just been to the vet and was de-wormed. Our vet diagnosed Miecke with hook worms, gave her the medicine, and she got well very quickly. The sweet, quiet, passive puppy changed into a little tornado before our very eyes. But that is a different story.
What have I learned from this experience? Never trust blindly the person who gives you a puppy. Take the pup to the vet right away. Be alert when your puppy is too mild mannered. Lethargy, smelly fecal matter, white gums and ears are just some of the indicators that there can be worms present in your puppy’s digestive system.
german shepherd equipment I am starting a German Shepherd kennel, any advice would be much appreciated.?
I have 5 females and 2 males, I am not just jumping into this, I have advisors, have all the equipment, kennels, and will be a very responsible breeder. I love the breed. Any advice would be much appreciated. Coloring – females – 1 long coat b/t w silver, 1 b/t, 1 bicolor, 1 rust color (i have heard it called red sable, but there is no black on it), & 1 tan sable. Males – 1 b/t (light tan, almost cream) and 1 cream sable. A really beautiful dog, very rare, I have heard that it is kind of a white dilute.
Are you planning to show or work your dogs? I’m sure your advisors have already told you this, but that’s much more important than coat color in terms of breeding, and it’s the only way you’ll ever really learn how to determine whether your dogs are of breeding quality.
Have you learned all you can about the genetic problems inherent to the breed? I assume your advisors have told you about OFA certification and CERF exams? If not, ask them about it. Do a search on German Shepherd Genetic Problems and pay attention to what you find, and how to test for it.
Learn how to read pedigrees, and find out as much as you can about the dogs *behind your dogs* in those pedigrees.
Be prepared to remove a dog from your breeding program if they have or are known to carry any genetic health problems.
Are you prepared to be involved in GSD rescue? If you plan to breed, you should be willing to assist in rescue for your breed.
Rescue Dog Training
German shepherd rescue dog training is different from the usual training that you might find or give your dog. This type of training requires more time, effort, know how, patience and consistency. This is due to the fact that you will be teaching your dog more than just the usual every day techniques.
There is no doubt that the training will be somewhat a bit more stressful because of the intensity that it will require, which is why you need to think about things deeply before getting on the program. Also, you will need to take into account the age of your German shepherd as the training will somewhat be stressful if your pet is not mentally and physically prepared for it.
In starting, you might want to take things slow. Basic techniques will still need to be established before any advanced methods are employed. So be sure that your pet learns this as thoroughly as he can. This will also be somewhat of an indicator as to whether you fit will have the behavior and patience to continue on with more intensive training or not. Place into mind that the task you will have on your hand will not be easy, but is not impossible as well.
For most part, you might want to start with “detraining” your pet first before any of the real training can begin. Once detraining of unacceptable behavior has been done next comes the establishment of any lacking skills of behaviors that your dog might need to get through the program successfully.
Once all the needed skills have been established, then comes the more rigorous rescue training process. Swimming, stamina building, strength training, will then ensue to equip your dog with all the skills that he needs to make him more effective.
The process can be somewhat long, and in some cases even continuous depending on the speed of improvement and necessity, which is why you need to be well prepared for it. German shepherd rescue dog training won’t be easy; you will need accurate and up to date information regarding proper training procedures. Not every recipe fit every dog or owner. Age and activity level count too. To make your own food is much more expensive. I think my 2 dogs are worth it. Check with your vet for his advice before starting on this.Don’t feed any of the foods that dogs shouldn’t have. I model ours after the BARF, but I don’t do raw meat or bones. All fruit and vegetables are blenderized.I use kelp,calcium powder,pro-biotics, and salmon oil too.
