Is This A Myth or a Fact?

I Got a German Shepherd Puppy and I Hate My Uncle but he did this ridiculous thing to my puppy when i wasn’t around,My Puppy started Crying So i go out and my uncle had my poor puppy by the neck skin, After he put him down he told me that The dogs who cry are Pure breed dogs my parents told me he was a pure breed dog and i believed them but i don’t Know if this MYTH is real or if i should go to the Vetenarian to ask How do i know if he is a pure breed or a false,And Is this myth real or not somebody please tell me i love my dog and hate my uncle, Even if he isn’t a pure breed I’ll Still Keep Him I’ve been through a lot with him But my uncle thinks he’s always right even His Brother Believes him and he’s 17 I read about GSD’S that can have problem’s with Their skin so could’ve that made my Puppy Cry?Thank You For Your Answer’s Your Information Is Helpful.

That does not make any sense at all. Any dog will cry out when you pick them up like that! There really isn’t a sure way to tell if a dog is a purebred (those DNA tests are crap) but doing it like that does nothing but hurt the dog. Tell your uncle that he needs to be more sensitive about your dog. You would love him even if he wasn’t purebred. :]

The Dog Dominance Myth

Is dominance in dogs just a few simple positions and postures….or is it something that runs deeper, something that is not visible to the human eye. For many years now we have heard of training techniques that involve the owner to act like a dominant dog. This involves the person doing things like eating first, walking with your dog beside you or behind you, instead of pulling in front of you, not letting him sleep on high positions in the house like the bed or the sofa and so on.

Although these techniques can help to create a good relationship with your dog, especially when used by novice owners, they don’t always work. From my experiences with not only training dogs but with observing my own dogs I have seen inconsistencies in this theory. I have found that in many instances that all these so called dominant positions do not mean a thing and more importantly they don’t work all the time.

For example my 4 year old Belgian Malinoi is quite a dominant female and for the past 3.5 years she has only been submissive to one older pig hunting female on my yard. Any other female I bring onto my yard, no matter what dominant positions they take. Nor how big they are, she will want to dominate them and if I allowed it she would fly into them and attack them with out hesitation. The same goes if I keep these females on my yard for many years, there will always be a struggle for dominance between her and the other female. This is regardless of what dominant behaviour the introduced female will try.

About 6 months ago something interesting happened on my yard. This Malinoi submitted to a 18month old Bulldog female I have raised on my yard. This Malinoi has dominated the Bulldog female for her entire life. Now this Bulldog female does the same dominant pose as all the other females have tried. But…for some reason it worked for her and the Malinoi female submitted…

Another instance that I can think of is when a friend of mine came done from Sydney to visit. I had my dog training class and at the end I needed one of my new clients to fill out some forms. This client, a husband and wife, had a 12month old German Shepherd female that they had absolutely no control over. When filling out the forms the husband, a large guy, handed control of the dog over to his wife who is a much smaller person. I asked my friend who has owned dogs for many years to assist her if she had trouble with the dog.

It was only about one minute before this dog started jumping on the lady. My friend correctly instructed the lady to check the dog with the lead. She did it correctly but the dog continued to jump on her. Seeing this, my friend took control of the leash and checked the dog. To his amazement and hers, this crazy out of control female dropped to the floor and looked up at my friend attentively. She had submitted with the exact same method that did not work for the lady…

While doing house calls for people with problem dogs. All too often the people have commented how calm and well behaved their dog is around me. I hear things like, “I can’t believe it, he is normally jumping up on whoever comes in the door.” Or he isn’t doing it now for some reason.” How can this be if all I have done is walked into their house or yard?

I believe there is something that dogs can see or feel that makes them submit to another animal or obey a human. And all these so called dominant positions are secondary to this “VIBE” someone or some dog gives off. Why else would my Malinoi female submit to a younger female that she has been doing dominant positions to all her life and never submitted to other females that would do exactly the same? Why did the female shepherd submit to my friend and not to its owner when he used exactly the same technique as the owner did? Why do peoples out of control dogs act differently when I enter the house?

Relating this “VIBE” back to dog training, I think the “VIBE” can also be called “respect.” A dog is not going to listen to you if it doesn’t have respect for you. Now to make it clear. I believe that not letting your dog sleep on your bed will create a degree of respect. And feeding your dog the correct way will go towards your dog respecting you. Making your dog walk beside you and not in front will also add to the respect your dog has for you. So all these things will go into the respect bank account and effect the relationship you have with your dog. But what I also want to make clear is that if your dog has the utmost respect for you, or you have the “VIBE,” you can let your dog drag you on the leash, or feed it in anyway you like, or let it sleep on the bed and it will still be obedient to you. Because like I said at the start, all these dominant positions/ techniques are only secondary to the “VIBE” you give off.

Why do people hate Pitbulls?

I have 3 Pitbulls (and a German Shepherd dog) and I would like to know why so many people *hate* (not putting this lightly) the breed. I know people say, “Oh, but they were only bred to fight” and “But they kill so many people”, but really, any dog can. Nobody even really learns the breed’s history before they go telling people that they are vicious, blood thirsty killers. I made a forum and website about them and I wouldn’t want it to see it go to waste. If you would like to read about the breed’s history, see pictures, sign a petition, etc., the link is http://www.freewebs.com/foozian/ . If you’d like to share your input about the breed, see/post pictures, learn or share information, ask questions, we would love more members on the forum, you are very welcome to join :)

Forum – http://pitpaws.proboards104.com/

Perhaps the lineage of pit bulls in our town is more aggressive than others? or not the norm? I was in the vet’s office to have stitches removed the other day..and a call came in about a sick pit bull..the vet’s assistant told the caller that the doctor doesn’t accept pit bull clients…So, then the vet came out to look at my dog, and the assistant told him about the caller..He said, I would like to help all dogs, but if it hadn’t been for my steel toed boots, I would have lost my foot to the last pit bull I tried to help..So, never again.
Then, they got to talking about the Chihuahuas puppies that had come in earlier in the day…3 Chihuahuas pups had been in their own yard, playing with children, when a pit bull climbed the fence and killed one and injured the other 2 , one of them died at the vet’s..the 3rd one was still in ICU.

I have several local friends who have been attacked by their own pit bulls…None of them were bad owners..but the dogs just ’snapped’ and attacked…so, I wonder…Could it be that our pit bulls are just worse than those in other areas? This is a very nice resort community, and not full of thugs.

The wonderful thing about ‘Secrets to Dog Training’ is that not only does it cover detailed training instructions for over many specific dog problems (Including Pictures), but it also includes unlimited consultations in our members area forum with Daniel Stevens himself and his team of dog trainers, vets and fellow dog owners.

With tips such as “You should NEVER use the recall word (“COME”, or whatever word you choose) to call your dog to discipline him, correct him, tell him what a bad dog he is, or for any negative reason. Bad deeds MUST be caught IN THE ACT in order to correct. If you still need your dog by you for a negative reason, give him a firm SIT command and go get him.” From Source 1

And many many more great tips, that you might not believe are true but are!

Note from Article Writer.

Not only are these methods the fastest it is also the healthiest methods that exist. I would never use methods from any where else once I got my copy.

My dogs were thought to be uncontrollable, I couldn’t have friends over because I didn’t know how my dogs would act. Sure I could have paid a crap load of money to get a trainer teach them, but I didn’t have the time or the money. When a friend told me about ‘Secrets to Dog Training’ I was skeptical at first but after about 1 week I noticed a great improvement in their behavior.

Here are some of their many great success stories.

Cara McLean

Dear Daniel, Your book was a lifesaver! Our 2 year old black German Shepherd, Jack, came to us from a woman who was not able to cope with him herself. When he came to us at the beginning of the year he was a total handful. He was boisterous, aggressive, skittish and unresponsive…

…In the first month we were at our wits end and when I bought the Secrets to Dog Training books online we were a week from giving him up ourselves. We had the dominance training sorted from day one because we were aware that was going to be an issue otherwise but Jack had serious behavioral issues around food and walks that needed a lot of work.

In the months since we got and read the books he has become a different dog! Everyone says so. We have recently been told people suggest us to friends in the area who have dog trouble and we have helped socialize several problem pups with Jack (because its good for him as much as them) all thanks to Daniel and his book giving us that extra knowledge that has really rounded out our own understanding.

I recommend it ad nauseum! Jack still pulls on the lead he has good days and bad days but we are working on it. Jack now looks us in the eyes, can be walked off lead. Sits, Stays, Fetches, leaves he is a great play mate. He sits and waits so quietly for his dinner we have honestly forgotten he is still waiting once or twice and he has come to remind us 5 minutes later!

He doesn’t immediately run out if the front door is open and will happily sit outside with us if we are cleaning cars or talking out the front without dashing off. We have taken him from the most difficult, messed up dog, almost deliberately awful to a great member of our family. He is fun. He is funny. He is a joy and we wouldn’t give him up for anything! And we wouldn’t have gotten this far without the wonderful hints, tips and explanations from Daniel in his online books. The best buy ever!! Bar none!

We honestly have had dozens of comments on how good Jack has become. No joke!

Cheers Daniel I really appreciate all your good work has done for us! — Cara McLean (Cambridge, UK)

“Hi, I bought the online book Secrets to Dog Training, because I have a big Guardian dog, and she was very aggressive to strangers in our house. I knew she could be trained because her mother was not aggressive. I got several good tips from the book as well as a personal email on how to correct her behavior.

It worked and she is now much much better. I am very pleased and satisfied I bought the book. Thanks a bunch Daniel for doing what you do.” — Doug Cummins (Nebraska, USA From Chick Here

siberian huskie/german shepherd mix?

I have a friend that has a siberian huskie/german shepherd puppy who needs a home. I am trying to convince my my in letting us take him. I have seen the puppy and already know he is the sweetest puppy ever and super friendly…he came right up to new people and didn’t bark at all. My mom is more worried about training and size. So does anyone know how big to expect this dog to get, if it will shed, and any other possible concerns. Thanks so much!

I had one a few years ago, and I loved him to death!

He will shed. Everywhere. Constantly.
That puppy is also going to need a daily jog, because otherwise he is just going to have too much energy, and will find destructive ways to wear himself out.
husky/GSD mix means that he will be very smart and easy to train if you know what you are doing. He is probably going to be very playful and rambunctious, but once he understands the rules, then his playfulness will start to be enjoyable. Games like fetch, and learning new tricks, are going to give him plenty of stimulation.

They also love toys, and will play with them like a kid would play with a toy(throwing, chasing, imagining with it). He will be an excited barker, and that can really get out of hand if you don’t keep it under control.
Awesome dog, but can be a real handful if you don’t know what you are doing. I would recommend for someone who has experience with training dogs.

German Shepherd Puppy Training – Learn The Facts Before You Buy A GSD Puppy

If you are still in the process of buying a German shepherd puppy, it really is in your best interest to bear these points in mind.

Make sure you buy a GSD from a good breeder. This is a big plus to insuring your German shepherd has a healthy happy life as an adult. Good genes and a good temperament are two ways to improve his quality of life.

Get referred by people that know, vets, kennel clubs, dog training clubs. These are excellent ways to get pointed in the right direction. The people at these places will have vast knowledge and passion about the GSD breed and will usually be more than happy to offer professional advice for free.

When you decide to buy your German shepherd puppy, don’t take the task lightly, they won’t be trained in one week. This is not a part time affair; it requires dedication and consistency throughout your dog’s developmental years.

As one of the most loyal and disciplined of breeds, the evidence stands out why the police force makes it their dog of choice. Yet each and every one of them has been trained to exceptional standard. If you don’t follow this line of practice with yours, you could end up with a truly unruly creature that will end up wreaking havoc in your home.

A full grown German shepherd is somewhere in the region of 90 pounds, they are more than capable of overpowering someone of smaller stature with ease. Although they may not mean any harm, most GSD puppies do not mature mentally and emotionally till their third year. This is why discipline is important.

Don’t fall into the mistake of thinking because they look cute when they are young, you won’t have any problems. They are smart and they are instinctively pack mentality orientated. Your German shepherd puppy will begin to test you and its boundaries fairly early on. Slowly attempting to climb to the alpha male of the pack. Learning its place in your family is crucial for both you and his quality of life.

Social integration, biting, hierarchy, house training. These and more, are all aspects you need to know if you are going to buy a GSD puppy for your home and family.

is it good to have a cross breed belgian malinois than a pure breed malinois?

people have said that belgian malinois pure breed puppies tend to be stubborn and very high drive dogs. pain on the neck to train, so i am thinking to have a cross breed belgian malinois to neutralize the effects of the dog behavior, since i love belgian malinois breeds. they also say that belgian malinois are much stronger and protective compared to german shepherds.

thanks

Well, there is an interesting question. I have owned malinois since 1980 and they are the most wonderful breed in the world. The epitomy of a working dog. Not the easiest dogs to live with because of reasons you mentioned above. Iknow because I have had as many as 10 of them at a time at home and I have trained hundreds more.
Now, there are mixed malinois and I owned several of them. They are not as easy to live with either because for some reason malinois genes are VERY dominant. There are breeders who intentionally mix malinois with shepherds for larger size and to intensify certain working qualities. It happens all the time with serious dog sport breeders in Holland and Belgium where the emphasis is on working/competing ability, not the show ring. There are no REAL 90-plus pound pure malinois, but, there are plenty of them currently competing in the NVBK and KNPV.
Malinois are very hyper, highstrung, dominant, aggressive, possesive, high drive animals and that is exactly what makes them the best dogs in the world.

Faithful, Devoted, Cherished

Military Working Dogs (MWD’s) were utilized long before the invention of gun powder. The first known force to use MWD’s is the Roman Empire. Many European countries have taken advantage of the canine’s senses since approximately 55 B.C. and continue to do so today.

A recommendation was made by the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I that dogs be used as sentries, messengers, patrol aids, and special supply missions. Upon review, the request was denied by G-3 General Headquarters.

Surprisingly the United States military did not begin an official program for MWD’s until 1942. The first military dogs were used to assist soldiers with guard duty. On July 1, 1942 the first large request for MWD’s came from Camp Hale in Colorado. Over 100 dogs were requested to be used as messenger, sledge, and scent dogs.

Once the United States joined the ranks of countries utilizing Military Working Dogs, the program exploded. The first MWD reception and training center was opened in Front Royal, Virginia in August 1942. By July 1943 more than 10,000 dogs had been procured by the U.S. military. During the early stages of the MWD program the military had a list of more than 23 acceptable breeds.

At the start of the Korean War the Military Working Dog program had been reduced from six platoons down to one. The remaining platoon consisted of a commanding officer, platoon sergeant, veterinarian, eighteen handlers and 27 dogs. In May 1951 the first squad of the remaining MWD platoon left for Korea with the rest arriving in January 1952.

During the Korean Conflict the MWD program was greatly expanded in usefulness and numbers. By the end of the war the dogs were performing the duties of sentry dog and scout dog.

The largest concentrated effort of use of dogs and handlers during any time of war for the United States was during the Vietnam War. Now being used by all four branches of the U.S. military, at least 3,747 dogs served in Vietnam.

Air Force sentry dog teams were sent to Vietnam first in July 1965 to determine how the dogs would tolerate the tropical conditions. The first deployment consisted of 40 handlers and 40 dogs sent from Lackland AFB for a 120-day temporary duty. The MWD’s adjusted well to the climate staying for the duration of the war as a valuable asset. The teams of handlers and dogs are credited with saving over 10,000 lives.

In August 1990 the Military Working Dogs were once again called to duty. The United States military deployed 118 MWD teams who would serve during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Military Working Dogs and their handlers continue to serve our country today within the borders of the United States as well as countries throughout the world. The deployments include combat as well as routine military duty.

Since 1999 the preferred breeds that are trained as Military Working Dogs are the German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, and Retrievers. Each dog is trained to perform the duties that best match the strengths of the breed. For approximately 66 years MWD’s have been trained to serve in one or more of the following classifications: Sentry Dog, Attack Dog, Tactical Dog, Silent Scout Dog, Messenger Dog, Casualty Dog, Sledge Dog, or Pack Dog.

On November 6, 2000 the 106th United States Congress approved Resolution H.R. 5314 which authorized the promotion of adoption of retired Military Working Dogs. The resolution outlines the following specifics of the adoption process: a) Availability for Adoption; b) Suitability for Adoption; e) Authorized Recipients; d) Consideration; and e) Limitations of Liability for Transferred Dogs.

Schutzhund training? PLEASE HELP?

I am getting a new german shepherds puppy the father is an import from germany and has , show, obedience, Schutz level 3 training..ect,,The mother is a top show, Do you think the pups will be any good at schutzhund or protection work?? They are also registered with the australian Kennel Club ( i live in Australia).

First of all, Congrats on such a find of one of the most smart breed of dog. To have pure bred papers for both parents, their puppies will definitely be great at whatever work you want them to do. They are quick learners and provide the unconditional love and respect for their owners. You still must work with them and have to train them to do whatever it is you want to raise them to be. The protection part is what they love to do when their owner gives them the love and attention they deserve growing up. They are a great dog, and good luck with them. You wont be sorry once you get them trained. It’s fun. I train dogs, if you need some advice ever on how to do certain things, give me a holler.
P.S. MY MOTTO: Your pet is only as smart as its owner. You really need to take time to train it right everyday! Most dogs learn fast, but forget easily, so you must continue the teaching and praise its accomplishments every day.

Is 1 month enough time to import a puppy?

My grandparents live in poland and they want to buy a german shepherd puppy in poland and get it to the US for me and my family, but will they have enough time to buy it and get the paperwork done to bring it to the US by april 19 because that is when their flight is
We want a Purebred and to have them look like a true German Shepherd, not just any dog.
Can someone please just answer my question, not comment on it… It’s starting to aggravate me.

First- what are the export regs of Poland for dogs?

The US has regs that no puppy can be sold under 8 weeks. ( and yeah, I know that is fudged at times)

This is interesting as Germany is the country of choice for import GS dogs unless you are in law inforcement — then it’s the IPO Czech dogs,

My OPINION is the pup is too young. Make other arrangement.

I bought a dog bathing brush for my dog; is it safe to use?

For some reason, I can’t find the product online, but it’s called Oster Animal Care’s Bathing Brush. It’s a rubber bristled brush that has a place where you can put shampoo in and dispense it onto the dog’s fur while you’re scrubbing it. Here’s a similar product:

http://www.grooming-pet-supplies.com/be4-2277/petsupplies/item.html

It’s not the shampoo dispensing part that worries me, it’s the rubber bristles. I’m afraid if I scrub too hard, my dog (German Shepherd, btw) will get hurt. Is it okay? And please don’t answer if you’re going to say something stupid, like, “Just wash it normally”.

Yup…they are great, just make sure to totally rinse your dog :)

ADD>>> I use it on my aussie and she has a double coat. The only thing I can tell you is use common sense. Don’t put so much pressure on it that it hurts the dog but enough to get to the skin and be gentle on the bone areas of the legs, your dog will let you know what’s uncomfortable. Mine loves it, she tries to grab it when I put it down so I keep using it :)

Determine How Much Your Pet Is Worth

Has the cost of caring for your pet become too much? Exactly how much is too much to spend on a pet? The human society reported last year that there are over 73 million dogs in America, and 90 million cats. And this is only the ones that are known about and documented. A whopping 40 percent of all households have at least one dog, and 35 percent of all households have at least one cat.

Let’s assume for a moment that you bought your pet. For an average purebred dog, you might expect to pay anywhere from $400 – $1200 dollars. This is just for the puppy, and will only likely include your first puppy vaccination shots. Within a few months you will also be looking at the cost of additional veterinary visits, cost of chew toys, food, training, crates, supplies, and any repair costs for chewed furniture. A generally healthy dog will still incur on average $200 per year in veterinary bills and a cat’s average bill will be only slightly lower. But what if your dog or cat is not healthy?

The first step involves training your pets

The first things to keep in mind about your family pet is what things you can do to help lower the cost of maintenance. For starters, the first step would be to have your pets trained. You can either have your pets professionally trained, or you can choose to do this at home. There are many programs out there that will be quite effective for training all but the most aggressive canines. Unfortunately cats are not as trainable as dogs, but they still can be trained for some things like litter box usage. The better your pet is trained, the less likely they will incur potential damage to themselves or your belongings. The type and amount of training will also depend on the breed of dog you own.

Any dog owner who has had a puppy knows that they like to chew. This constant desire to chew things is often the greatest cause of property damage, next to digging, and frequently leads to a vet trip for some items that are accidentally swallowed whole. Some breeds, like golden retrievers are notorious for swallowing almost any item. Mine once swallowed an entire sock. Luckily though, this sock filled with grass was vomited up safely an hour later and did not require surgery to remove it. Make sure your puppy is trained to chew on specific items or toys. Once the puppy has learned that these items are good and others are bad, you can lessen the chance of emergency vet visits

Training your pets will also offer the benefit of pets that listen to their owners. Pets like to go for walks. Larger breed dogs such as Malamutes or German Shepherd can be quite strong and hard to control. There are wonderful training aids available to help curb your dogs of the desire to pull on his leash. One such item is often seen on a horse, and it is called a halter. First of all, when used properly, a halter will not harm your dog in any manner. I used one quite successfully with a large malamute, which is a breed of sledding dogs that are known for pulling.

The halter is designed to be placed over the dog’s muzzle and attached to a leash or collar. When the dog starts to tug on the leash, the halter will provide a slight backwards tug on the dog’s nose forcing the dog to turn his head. This gives the dog a moment of pause to let them know they should not be pulling ahead. Within a few days of using this item the malamute went from constantly strong pulling to gently walking beside the owner. The owner no longer worried about the dog running off and getting hurt.

The top issues that you will need to address for training purposes will include potty training, digging, biting, jumping, and coming when called. Training your pet will make your pet happier, and less likely to get into trouble in some manner. The pets will no longer poop in your home, they won’t jump on strangers, and you will be able to control them when you’re out in public.

Other issues besides training,

A well trained pet will considerably help to lower your overall cost of ownership. But there are also other steps that can be taken as well. One thing that we think about for ourselves is called preventative maintenance. A good number of animal owners do not think about brushing their pet’s teeth, regular pet baths, or general grooming. This is often thought of for the “show dog”, or the “high society” pet. But just like us, they can become infected with a myriad of disease or health issues due to being unclean. Regular bathing will also help control any potential problems with fleas, ticks and other parasites.

With a little time, patience, and practice you will be able to do a professional quality grooming in your own home. This does not need to be done by a vet or some expensive grooming shop. If you do not have the time to do this yourself, then make sure you shop around for a good groomer. Get recommendations from friends, family or your vet.

Pet foods are also a big concern when it comes to cost. Many people do not realize that most store bought brands of dog foods are not good for your pets. Think of this like eating fast food every day. Much of the common dog food consists of filler products. These can be ground up chicken, pork, or beef bones or other parts. Some pets may even develop allergies to commonly found ingredients in these major brand foods.

Pet foods with a high content of filler will not satisfy your dog’s daily meal or nutritional requirements. This will often lead to repeat feedings to satisfy your dogs hunger, and if your dog remains hungry it may resort to chewing other items again. Try to keep your pet on a consistent diet as well. Too many changes from one brand to another can cause problems with their stomach or digestive systems.

We often think buying a 50 pound bag is cheaper. Until years down the line and our pet is losing his fur or becomes unhealthy for no apparent reason. Make sure to ask your vet about healthier alternatives to buying these “cheap” store foods

We own pets because we love them. They have grown to be parts of our families. We take them with us when we go on vacations, we walk them everyday through rain and snow, and we do our best to care for them. Many of us would say that our pets are priceless and that we would pay any price to keep our loving pets with us a little longer. Unfortunately we often think of this when it has become too late, or too expensive, and this does not need to be the case.

If you have a pet that you love, then like any child, get them on the healthy path early on. Feed then good quality foods, take them for regular checkups, and keep your dog clean and well trained. Consider getting things like baseline x-rays for comparison so that you will know if your pet has hip or elbow problems in the future. If you think of your pet as one of the family, then please treat them like one and take care of them with preventative care. Your pet will thank you for this treatment with many more years of additional love and devotion.

Importing a German Shepherd?

I want to fly to Germany, purchase a German Shepherd and fly back to the USA with him. Does anyone know what’s involved? The average cost? Thank!

I do this all the time, well, most of my dogs are flown here for me and I do make the occasional trip, depending on the amount of dogs being imported and the time for year.
“I don’t bark, I yodel” gave you an excellent answer and I just wanted to add a few things to it.
First, decide what you want to do with this dog, show, breeding, work, sport, etc. Once you have figured that out, contact a few breeders/trainers there and inquire about what they have available, but, BE CAREFUL….there are tons of dog brokers in Europe and many simply collect dogs and have hundreds available for sale at any one time…stay away from them!!!
Second, if that dog is an adult and he/she is titled in a sport and shown, be ready to spend SERIOUS money for him.
Show dogs are much more expensive then work dogs in Europe as well as in the States lately.

If you are looking for a working type dog, not a sport dog, or a sport dog that will go beyond the club level, you are better off looking in other countries that have not stuck their heads in the conformation toilet and gave up all working ability.
As an example of this, the German police are using Belgian Malinois and going to Holland to purchase them instead of the shepherd because they rightly feel that the breed no longer has what it takes to do real work.
Countries such as Holland, Belgium and many of the former Eastern Block countries have excellent breeding programs made specifically for producing working dogs.

A working type adult dog with training will run you about $6000 versus an adult show dog that will cost tens of thousands.
I would stay with sable color dogs as they are closely related to working lines.
Puppies would cost around $1500-$3000, depending on the breeder and the lines, work or show quality, etc.
Shipping is not that bad, depending on the size of the crate, health certificates, passports, etc, about $1000.

Now, if you will not take anything else into consideration, remember this….unless you speak German or Dutch or Flemish, you stand a VERY good chance of being scammed, I know, I have seen it happen a million times. Either you know the breeder/trainer, or you know someone who does and you trust them.
They see Americans coming and they see $$$$ signs!!!!!
Always make sure the paper work including the X-rays match the dog you are buying, NEVER let a “friend” of the trainer show you how good the dog works, the dog and the helper are friends and he has a vested interest in seeing the dog get sold as he will make something too for helping.
YOU test the dog in whatever it is you want to see. I was born and raised in Europe, I have been dealing with breeders and trainers there for 30 years, they know me I know them, I know what I want and they know they cannot give me something else…BE CAREFUL!

To the idiot/idiots who adviced this person to go to a rescue/pound to get the same caliber of dog he would get in Europe, please, stop spewing your illiteracy in here, you have no idea what a real or a quality dog is…trust me!!!
Hope I helped

ADD: HAving seen Dutch’s answer now too, he is also absolutely correct!!!

german shepherd training supplies
I am getting a german shepherd around the 26th of June?

My parents say I can only get one if I prove responsible like straight a’s finishing my book (the lord of the ring’s) that i’m almost halfway through and always remember to make my bed and take showers and brush my teeth ( and don’t give me crap i’m only 11) but when i do get the dog i want a girl shepherd but any ideas where to get it supplies training methods and all that p.s. wish me luck on the responsibility part of it

You are only 11?…… you dont want crap, too bad because you should not even be on here for another two years. (read the rules)

Responsibility for a dog requires money(which I assume your parents will cover over the next 10+ years) time, and energy. When do you plan on taking care of the dog between school and other activities? Daily walking, housebreaking, training daily as well as attending obedience classes. Playing with the dog, feeding, exercising, etc.

German shepherds are not good first dogs for anyone who is a new dog owner, regardless of age. If you really think you and your family can handle it, visit a local shelter to find a german shepherd or check petfinder.

You can find supplies at a local pet store(petsmart, or better yet, pet supplies plus) and an obedience class through your local kennel club.
